The Butterfly Effect

West London College Seraina Schraff Course Nr.: E19CC

All Walks launched a competition for the creative youth in association with i-D Magazine, sponsored by Succeed Foundation and supported by Graduate Fashion Week and Arts Thread. The competition brief challenged us to discuss the topic of diversity. Over the last few years there has been an improvement regarding the representation of the population in the choice of models in the fashion industry but there is still a lot of room for improvement. I chose the topic of age because at a certain point in our lives we all have to deal with getting older. Many of us will struggle with it, some even to the point to lie about their age or get plastic surgery to cover up the course of nature. But in the end there is no denying, that all our bodies will change over time, whether we like it or not.

Design Statement We accept it as normal that objects don’t lose their charm just because they are getting older. No these objects are called vintage and are highly thought after. Sometimes these vintage objects are even more thought after now that they are “vintage” than the time they just came from production. So why should that be different for people? Elder people have lived through more than I, as a young person, can imagine. They can tell interesting stories. Yes their appearance has changed over time but so has a butterfly after completing metamorphosis.

The name “butterfly effect” also describes a philosophical phenomenon. The idea is that everything that happens will have an influence on what will happen in the future. Maybe it is not a clear connection, maybe it is just some knowledge that might shift the outcome of a small decision but all these small little things will have a big influence in the end. The collection is named “the butterfly effect” not only because I think elderly people are beautiful as beautiful as butterflies but also because there is only one ray of decisions that can take them to the place they are in at this very moment. And all these decisions are their butterfly effect.
