BELGRADE THE DESTINATION Welcome to Belgrade, a city with a rich history and a bright future. If you have not been to Belgrade, this city will surprise you. Belgrade captures Serbia’s warm spirit of hospitality, but with an added sense of style. It is a city renowned for its rich and exotic flavours, from our remarkable history to our food and wine, from our cultural offerings to our famous nightlife that is the talk of Europe.
Belgrade still occupies a strategic place in Europe. Situated above the confluence of the Danube and Sava rivers, it has always been the meeting point and gateway between east and west. This has also created a place that generated a confluence of thought, philosophy, science and art. What better place could there possibly be to have your next meeting?
Belgrade is poised to become Europe’s fastest growing congress destination. This compact, walkable city offers remarkable convenience for hosting major events and conferences. As an example, Belgrade offers two major convention hotels that are within 5 minutes walking distance of the Sava Centar, Belgrade’s primary congress facility. The Sava Centar’s 3,670 plenary seats and variety of meeting rooms makes it one of Europe’s largest and most capable major convention venues. For smaller meetings we have a wide range of hotel and venue choices. All of this is nestled conveniently together and is only 15 minutes from the airport.
We hope you will also come and discover the unique soul of the city, captured in its fascinating precincts which feature cafes and bars, fashionable shops, innovative cuisine, theatres, museums and galleries. Belgrade is also the beginning point for your exploration of some of Serbia’s beautiful monasteries, wineries, farmhouse restaurants, ethno villages, spas, wildlife reserves, natural beauty and archeological sites.
Serbia’s capital city is also a place undergoing major renewal. New hotels are being built while our existing hotels are being made even better. Our new airport is one of the most efficient in Europe. You will find that it is a very short time after your arrival that you have already cleared customs. That is because we are so eager to greet you with our smiles. You will find that Belgrade is a great place to hold your meeting. In many ways, it is Europe’s unique new destination, which offers a great staging place for meetings large and small. It offers a unique glimpse into a Europe of traditional ways that many other cities have long forgotten, yet, also displays an edge and a passion that is unique to this part of the world.
We hope that this Planner’s Guide will provide you with all of the information that you need to stage a successful event in Belgrade. And, the staff of the Belgrade Convention Bureau is ready to assist you in planning your next meeting, from finding the right venues to helping you find the best service providers. ABOUT BELGRADE
Welcome to Belgrade and get ready to be surprised. Contrarily to what you might have heard Belgrade is not that bombed-up place that some media wanted you to believe. It is – as it always has been - a hip dynamic city that is now booming with new business and urban development projects, and prides itself in having one of the coolest nightlife scenes in the whole of Europe. And, also contrary to popular perception, the city is also completely safe to visit. Crime rate is traditionally low and there is no part of town that wouldn’t be safe to walk any time of day or night. Belgrade is way safer than most cities of two million people, and provides all the services and amenities you can expect from a regular European capital.
Truly moving on from the conflicts of 1990s, Belgrade is now quickly regaining its former position as the business hub of the Balkans. With foreign direct investment that topped 2 billion dollars in 2007 and an urban plan that includes new bridges, new light rail system, five star hotels and more than 125,000 square meters of new office space, Belgrade is the development powerhouse of the region. Only last year it won Financial Times’ prestigious award City of the Future for South Europe. With current accommodation capacity, Belgrade can easily accommodate conferences of up to five thousands participants. Belgrade’s exhibition and conference center Sava was fully renovated for top service to host 2005 EBRD conference that had more than 4,000 participants. And in 2005, modern sports complex Belgrade Arena was open, which will host World University Summer Games, largest world sports championship for college athletes. Belgrade is coming on strong as one of the new European hot spots, poised to give popular weekend destinations like Berlin and Milan a run for their money. Attractive and architecturally striking, Belgrade has a unique ambience and irresistible charm of real, beguiling Balkan spirit. There is history oozing out of every brick and an atmosphere you can almost touch. You get a real feeling of being in an exotic location, where the tectonic plates of Islam, Orthodox Christianity and Roman Catholicism, alongside socialism and capitalism, have all collided in the past. But it’s the electricity of Belgrade’s street life that makes the greatest impression. The tree lined avenues, cobbled streets, wide squares, sidewalk terraces, bistros on boulevards and case in pedestrian zones are bustling with life, be it 2 a.m. or 2 p.m. You can shop yourself out, play the culture vulture or party until dawn, whether it’s a Monday or a Saturday. With so many great shows, concerts and sports events competing for your attention, you’ll be spoilt for choice. The value to be found is hard to believe and you are guaranteed to run into some of the warmest and most welcoming people you will ever meet.

SHOPPING
B EL G R ADE , TH E DESTINATION
In spite of its Eastern provenance, Belgrade has always been closely connected to the West. Its citizens eagerly follow the latest world trends and news and are strongly brand- and quality oriented. At the same time, there is an independent, confident and even sometimes edgy sense of fashion here. Stated simply, Belgraders are fashionable on their own terms. On the one hand, shopping can seem quite familiar and comfortable to western Europeans and global visitors. On the other, Belgrade’s unique fusion of things east and west means that you will find things here that you won’t find in other European capitals, and your shopping experience can be excitingly different.
Shopping zones and pedestrian areas will often have the same face you will find in other European metropolises, with constantly updated stocks and displays featuring brands familiar to any Western shopper. The key bonus is that being outside the EU, and with a very favorable exchange rate, Belgrade is a good place for discount shopping as many price tags will be lower than what one finds at home. The best idea is to check for yourself. Nearly all top stores and shopping malls are located in the heart of the city, in the pedestrian area or just within walking distance from it, thus combining your shopping experience with a pleasant stroll. In case you want something different than brands or bags with famous logos, or wish to bring some more exotic things home, you will find a wide range of local and regional fashions and accessories that will help you to differentiate yourself from the mainstream. In the pedestrian area, the Ethnographical Museum has a souvenir shop with fantastic replicas of Serbian medieval jewelry and objects: both an ideal souvenir and a valuable piece of jewelry at an affordable price. In addition to the Museum store and antique shops, several ethnic shops are real treasuries of national heritage with handmade products directly from Serbia’s authentic, living folklore areas. These include traditional hand-woven wool carpets and handdecorated embroidery with typical Balkan geometrical patterns; you will also find genuine knitwear, sweaters and coats handknit of natural wool, great for cold seasons; wooden and ceramic pottery, equally nice as a kitchen decoration and usable for a rustic style lunch; instruments such as “frula”, which is a shepherds’ flute, or “gusle”, a single-stringed bow viol. Or, you may even try a pair of “opanci”, traditional Serbian peasant shoes made of calfskin with wooden horns on toes. In the city center you may find quite a large number of tiny shops and street sellers offering a wide range of affordable gifts and souvenirs: vignettes of Belgrade painted in water colors, even in oil on canvas, most of them already framed and ready to hang, small pieces of pottery or a classic range of souvenir objects. Finally, you may also want to bring with you some of the local tastes and flavours. Warmly recommended are domestic wines, liqueurs and excellent grappas, stylishly packed with whole fruit – a pear for example – in the bottle.

BELGRADE DINING
Romantic narrow alleys and cobbled squares of Belgrade’s old city are dotted with vibrant restaurants, cafes, bistros and bars across the spectrum of cuisine, from national, Chinese, Japanese and Thai, to French, Italian, Mediterranean and Russian. Treat yourself to an evening of internationallyrenowned fine dining at any of the elegant restaurants secreted throughout the city. Then enjoy the other extreme on bustling street corners by savoring delicious juicy Serbian- style fast food grills, served with juicy salads and excellent domestic wines and beers.
CAFÉ Belgrade’s laid back attitude is best expressed in the city’s famous café culture. Boasting an unmistakable Mediterranean atmosphere, the myriad of cool and relaxed cafes are sprawled across almost every square, sidewalk and park imaginable. Day or night, they teem with the city’s trendy population, not just making lunch time pit stops, but actually enjoying the weather and drinks, or just hanging out. Business meetings are also a common occurrence at these cafés, over espresso, cappuccino and the local domaca coffee (brewed strongly, with the grounds left in).
BOAT RESTAURANTS Docked along the Danube and Sava waterfront is Belgrade’s unique fleet of floating boat-restaurants. Summer’s favorite, these boats and barges turned restaurants specialize in deliciously prepared fresh water fish, and beautiful views of Belgrade fortress or Zemun bohemian quarter. Check out posh places offering sophisticated national recipes or, for an unbeatable authentic feel, head to one of the side barges for some of the best fish stew you’ve ever had.
SKADARLIJA the old bohemian quarter of Belgrade dates back to late 19th and early 20th century. It was back then when its kafane (taverns and restaurants) were a meeting place for many of the greatest figures of the local cultural scene of the period. It is often compared with the Montmartre in Paris, both for its appearance and the cheerful, vigorous artists’ atmosphere. Skadarlija offers a variety of well known restaurants that traditionally promote the national cuisine, but their offer includes international dishes as well. Nearly all restaurants also have live music with a traditional repertoire.

FOOD, WINE & ENTERTAINMENT
B EL G R ADE , TH E DESTINATION
Belgrade is one of the safest capital cities in Europe, embracing foreign visitors with its vibrant social life. The inhabitants of the city are friendly and helpful, many speaking English, French, German or another foreign language. Though large, the city has a feeling of familiarity to it, with most of its main center area accessible by foot or short taxi rides. A day in Belgrade will often end up in one of its many cafes, which spill onto the streets and into the parks in summer months, full of locals in lively conversation. Belgraders are very social by nature, meeting out for coffee, lunch, dinner or dancing at the city’s high-style bars and discos. In between, strolling and shopping in the pedestrian zones, gathering in Republic Square in front of the National Museum or on the paths of the Kalemegdan Fortress gives outdoor Belgrade an unmatched human pulse. Much of social life is focused around the Knez Mihailova walking and shopping street, where friends meet for morning coffee or a snack in its numerous cafes. By afternoon, cafes throughout the city have filled up, with people heading down to the Skadarlija bohemian quarter for domestic cuisine served up to roaming orchestras playing the ‘old town’ favorites. Belgrade has seen a recent growth in stylish new international restaurants, while its trendy inhabitants have responded in kind. Belgrade has deservedly earned its reputation for great nightlife, with concerts, events, festivals and openings occurring nightly and going to the early hours of the morning. In fact, while referring to the city’s nightlife the Lonely Planet Guide recently named Belgrade one of Europe’s 10 Hot Spots. In winter the clubs host international acts and DJs, moving to outdoor venues or boats on the Sava and Danube during hot, fun-filled summer months. Whatever the style of music, whether it be traditional Gypsy bands or top-class electronic music, in a bunkers beneath the fortress or high-styled new discos, Belgrade has something for everyone, the only trouble being what and where to choose from. A trip to Belgrade isn’t complete without a night on the town, something your hosts will proudly help make sure is far from dull.
Here are some recent reviews of Belgrade’s nightlife:
“To ‘understand’ Belgrade you need to hang out with the Bohemian set and find out where the underground scene is hiding.” TNT Magazine
“The citizens are disco dynamos…” The Observer
“If the great Yugoslav unifier Tito staggered from his hillside tomb, he’d find himself in the Continent’s last great undiscovered night-life scene.” The New York Times
“Belgrade is a city that never sleeps.” Suffolk Magazine
“Forget London, Paris or New York, this was one of the coolest nightspots I have ever seen.” Metro

PARKS AND RECREATION AREAS
Belgrade keeps much of its charm in its leafy green parks and beautiful views of the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers, where a break from the city can produce a needed moment of tranquility. Belgraders can often be found outdoors, enjoying walks in the park, picnics, sports and all the outdoors has to offer.
KALEMEGDAN Anchoring the city at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers is the large Kalemegdan Fortress, now a beautiful city park. Kalemegdan was the prize of whoever captured Belgrade, whether it be the Celts in prehistoric times, or the Romans and Visigoths later on, the Ottomans, AustriaHungary or finally the Serbian liberators, who in 1867 stripped the fortress of its military purpose while expanding and preserving it for its cultural and historical value. This once vital fortification, which has changed hands over 40 times in its long history, is now the site of pleasant paths, monuments, museums and parks. On the area of the former plateau of the Upper Town stands the towering statue of The Victor, looking at the confluence of the two rivers, then off over Big War Island to New Belgrade and Zemun. The fortress’ historical walls and buildings are home to the Military Museum, Cvijeta Zuzoric Art Pavilion, Cultural Heritage Preservation Institute, Natural History Museum, City Zoo, small children’s amusement park and many sports fields and restaurants. Formerly the site of scores of battles, the plateau in front of the fortress is home to the Nebojsa Tower, King Karlo’s Gate, St. Petka Chapel and Ruzica Church, while inside the Upper Town are passages, towers and footbridges. The name Kalemegdan is a combination of the Turkish words for ‘field’ (kale) and ‘fight’ (megdan), though today it is a peaceful place special to all Belgraders.
TASMAJDAN Belgrade’s city-center Tasmajdan park is a great place to remind yourself of nature, if only just for a minute on a busy day. Old, leafy trees cast shade over the paths and park benches, where strollers walk hand in hand and children play with the older generation watching over them and sometimes joining in. The location was once a Roman quarry, later a cemetery and still has kilometers of tunnels underneath it that were used for shelter and military purposes in both world wars. The park starts behind the main post office and Serbian national television building, and is home to the large Serbian Orthodox St. Mark’s Church (built in the 1930s) and smaller Russian Church (1924). The Tasmajdan sports complex has indoor and outdoor Olympic-sized pools, a hotel, as well as an older stadium that is sometimes used for concerts. The terrace at the popular Chances café is crowded on summer days, while the outdoor garden at the respected restaurant Madera is a great place to eat and be seen. Playgrounds and small rides keep little ones happy.
KOSUTNJAK Used as a royal hunting ground until the early 20th century, the forest of Kostunjak stretches over 330 hectares on the outskirts of Belgrade. Once abundant with all sorts of wild animals, the park now gives city dwellers the chance to go for long walks in nature or train at the many sports complexes and pools located throughout the massive forest. Several restaurants are scattered throughout the grounds, offering up excellent food with good views or seclusion in the woods. There is even a small ski hill in the winter, with a working rope tow, as well as the grounds of Film City (Filmski grad), with its numerous film production studios and buildings that used to be the center of a thriving film industry.

ADA CIGANLIJA
AVALA
Easily accessible from the center of Belgrade by foot or public transportation, the 800-hectare nature complex of Ada Ciganlija is a favorite good weather place for Belgraders of all ages. Actually an island in the Sava river, 4 km upstream from the confluence at the Danube, Ada (as it is often abbreviated) is now connected to the banks by a pedestrian walkway. Walkers, runners, skaters, and bikers enjoy the many paths crisscrossing the large island, where fields for almost all sports imaginable can be found, including even baseball and golf.
At 511 meters and just 15 kilometers from the center of Belgrade, the peak of Avala is the region’s highest point, giving unobstructed views hundreds of kilometers in every direction to Sumadija, Macva, Srem and Banat. The top of the preserved mountain can be reached by car over a winding paved road or via the network of hiking trails.
On its inner side, a 4 km long lake has been formed by damming off the river on each side, creating an idyllic lake and beach that stretches almost completely around it. Beachside cafes and restaurants are crowded day and night during summer, though a calmer experience can always be had by continuing down the path to more secluded stretches of the beach or into the thick forest covering the island.
The hotel and restaurant on the summit is a great place to start and finish your adventure, or take a picnic to the many places hidden in the forests. The mountain takes its name from the Arabic word havala, meaning ‘a place with a beautiful view.’ It was militarily fortified in Roman times and was the site of the Middle Ages city of Zmov. Where the fortification once was is now the grand Monument to the Unknown Hero, erected in 1934 by sculptor Ivan Mestrovic. Nearby is also the location of the formerly massive Avala TV tower, previously clearly visible from Belgrade’s streets but destroyed in the NATO bombing campaign of 1999.
Many swimmers, divers and water polo players train on the lake, which also has small sailboats and rowboats and a cable-towed water-ski course. On the outer side of the island, rustic restaurants tucked away on barges and houseboats preserve Belgrade’s bohemian traditions.
Picnic tables are located throughout the park at the base, or off the road leading to the top. A village at the bottom has a few restaurants, small hotels and places for groceries. Public buses from the center of Belgrade travel to the recreation area frequently.

Belgrade’s Colorful Precincts
SKADARLIJA
REPUBLIC SQUARE
A key attraction is Belgrade’s bohemian quarter, where little has changed over the past century and a half. It consists of a row of charming old taverns, numerous galleries and antique shops along an uneven, Turkish-style cobbled street. At the beginning of the last century, this was the gathering place of actors, journalists, painters and others who loved fine wine, tasty grilled meat and intelligent conversation. Belgrade people and their guests still like to take walks in this quarter, and the spirit of bygone times is still preserved in its restaurants - Tri sesira (The Three Hats), Dva jelena (The Two Deer), Ima dana (There’s Time), Skadarlija, Zlatni bokal (The Golden Jug), as well as by street poets and painters. Skadarlija is located in the city center, downhill from the National Theatre.
The city’s central square was built at the former site of the notorious Stambol Gate, which was the main entrance to the city in the Turkish era. Today, it features the buildings of the National Theatre, National Museum, several cafes, garden restaurants and fountains. The statue of Knez Mihailo by Enrico Pazzi dominates the square and marks the favorite meeting place for generations of Belgrade people who call it “Kod Konja” Serbian for “by the horse.”
STRAHINJICA BANA
TERAZIJE
This street is also known by Belgraders as “Silicon Valley” for reasons that we will let you discover for yourself. It is a beautiful shaded narrow streetscape lined with some of the city’s most upscale cafes. It is one of the city’s very trendy places to see and be seen.
Terazije (Turkish for “water tower”) got its name after the huge reservoir which directed the water towards lower parts of the city. Terazije is overlooked by the Moskva Hotel, built in 1906 as well as the Balkan and Kasina hotels, and Albanija Palace. Albanija bears the name of an old tavern whose site it now occupies. In the late 1930’s, during ground works for the new building’s foundation, a mammoth’s bones were found there. Albanija long held the title of the tallest building in the Balkans. The Terazije Fountain across the street, a work by Franz Loran, built in 1860, also attracts much attention.
KNEZ MIHAJLOVA STREET
KOSANCICEV VENAC
Belgrade’s famous shopping street stretches from Terazije to Kalemegdan and is the city’s main promenade. It was named after Knez Mihailo, Knez Milos Obrenovic’s younger son, who finally liberated Serbia from the Turks as well as introduced numerous reforms and brought the European spirit into what had been an ordinary Ottoman province. The street is a pedestrian-only area, and has many boutiques, galleries, various representative offices, as well as many exquisite buildings and homes built towards the end of 19th century.
On the hill overlooking the Sava port, in the area where old city fortifications and palisades used to be, connecting two entrances to the city (Sava Gate and Varos Gate), the street Kosancicev Venac stretches today. It bears the name of a hero from the Battle of Kosovo (between Serbs and Turks, in 1389), and is still cobbled Turkish-style, in memory of the ancient times. Today, it abounds with art studios and galleries, and there is also the University of Arts Rector’s Office.

CATHEDRAL CHURCH
PARLIAMENT SQUARE
Built in 1840, this is neither the oldest nor the largest church in Belgrade, but is in many ways the most important. It was built across from the Serbian Orthodox Church’s Patriarchy, and is dedicated to Holy Archangel Michael. This is the resting place of Holy Emperor Uros, Knez Milos and Knez Mihailo of the Obrenovic dynasty, and many church dignitaries. Also in front of the church are the graves of Serbian educators Vuk Karadzic, who created the modern Cyrillic alphabet, and Dositej Obradovic, who was the father of Serbia’s education system. Across from Cathedral Church is the tavern The Question Mark (“?“), which has not changed its appearance or business in almost two centuries.
This is the area that features both the Serbian Parliament and the old Royal Palace on Kralja Milana Street, near Terazije. Visitors can see the old court, built in 1884, where the Obrenovic dynasty members used to live. Today it houses the Belgrade City Council, and until early 20th century, next to it was the building where the last royal couple from the Obrenovic family, Queen Draga and King Aleksandar, were killed. Soon after the assassination, the building was demolished and a lawn and garden were set up in its place.
ROYAL COURTS
ZEMUN
In Dedinje, Belgrade’s luxury residential area, is the royal courts complex. The court of King Aleksandar Karadjordjevic the First and his wife Marija was built in 1929, and eight years later, in the immediate vicinity, Beli Dvor (White Court) was built for their sons Petar, Tomislav and Andrej. The complex covers over 135 hectares, and, in addition to the royal courts, comprises many ancillary buildings. The courts are open for organized tours on weekends, and visitors can see the staterooms and numerous works of art kept there. His Highness Prince Aleksandar Karadjordjevic, heir to the throne, and his family live there now.
Short, narrow streets, the promenade by the Danube Quay, and barges converted into taverns and restaurants are only some of the things you will see in Zemun, a place that until the First World War had developed as a separate city and today is a part of Belgrade. Zemun was once the furthest eastern outpost in Austria. On Gardos, the hill watching over Zemun, is the Millenium Tower, built in 1896 to celebrate one thousand years of the Hungarian Empire. It offers a magnificent view of the Danube, Belgrade and Avala, and the remains of the Zemun fortress, dating from 15th century, can still be seen around the tower.

NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN BELGRADE
Close to 1 Billion Euros of new projects are underway in Belgrade which will further enhance the city’s convenience and attractiveness as a congress destination. They include improvements to transport infrastructure
which will reduce travel times between the city centre and the major convention facilities in New Belgrade. There are also a number of new developments which will offer new and exciting function spaces and visitor attractions.
IMPROVEMENTS TO TRANSPORT
NEW ATTRACTIONS AND VENUES
Belgrade’s New Light Rail System
Belgrade’s New Opera House
Construction of Belgrade’s first light rail system is planned to commence in 2008 and to be fully completed by 2012. The route will provide underground service through the heart of the city centre, then surface to cross the Sava River via a new bridge adjacent to the Branko’s Bridge and continuing as surface rail to Zemun.
Construction will begin in 2009 on Belgrade’s new Opera House in Usce a part of Novi Belgrade that is 10 minutes walking distance from the Sava Centar, The Opera House will be situated in beautiful parklands overlooking the confluence of the Sava and Danube Rivers and will provide a splendid view over the water to the Kalemegdan fortress. It will also form part of a cultural precinct, since it will be adjacent to the Museum of Contemporary Art. The Opera House will cover an area of roughly 27,000 sqm, comprising halls for opera, ballet and concert performances with the capacity to seat 1,400. The smaller, auxiliary hall will have a capacity of 700, and the overall investment will be approximately 60 million Euros.
The result will be a very fast and convenient way for delegates using hotels in Belgrade Centre to come and go from congress activities occurring at the Sava Centar, or for delegates staying at the Hyatt and Intercontinental hotels to attend conferences or functions occurring in the city centre. In addition, it will provide a pleasant and convenient way for delegates to explore the historical and picturesque village of Zemun while enjoying the dining and nightlife along the banks of the Danube. Planned expansions of the system will provide connections to the Belgrade Fair and also create a second river crossing southwest of the Sava Centar.
Belgrade’s New Bridge Belgrade is soon to commence construction on a new bridge across the river Sava, connecting Novi Belgrade to the southwestern part of Belgrade. This new transport route will provide an additional surface approach to the Sava Centar while also further improving traffic flow across the existing bridges. The results will be faster and more convenient transport links to the Sava Centar for the larger groups using hotels in other parts of Belgrade. Belgrade City Council has adopted a popular concept design for the new bridge, known as the “Giraffe”. A total construction cost of the new crossing and the approaching transport routes is estimated at just over 161 million Euros. Completion of the bridge is scheduled for 2009.
Belgrade’s New “Roundabout” A new road encircling Belgrade will further reduce traffic levels in the central city. This will also result in reduced transit times between the airport and the city as well as within the city. The roundabout project will cost 500 million EURO and is expected to be finished by the end of 2008.
Renovation of Belgrade’s National Museum One of the most important cultural establishments, the National Museum in Belgrade, is undergoing thorough refurbishment. The building, in Republic Square, was first erected in 1903, more than 20 million Euros has been allocated for its reconstruction in the next two years, and the changes will include the development of a larger exhibition and function space. The museum will be reopened for visitors in the latter part of 2009.
Belgrade’s New Marina The new “Marina Dorcol” will be built in the vicinity of the Hotel Jugoslavija, on the banks of the Danube across from the island Veliko Ratno Ostrvo. SHORT TRIPS – CLOSE TO BELGRADE
In the vicinity of Belgrade, only a hundred kilometers from the city center, there are many resorts, cultural and historical monuments, archaeological sites, nature preserves and many more places to visit. They can be reached by bus, car, rail or boat, and all are within an hour and a half traveling distance.

ARANDJELOVAC
Arandjelovac is situated only 75 km south of Belgrade, in the heart of the Sumadija region. Watched over by two mountains, near the numerous thermal and healing springs, it attracts many tourists each year. The town’s main street, the place for an evening promenade, abounds with small shops packed closely together, with old craft shops and modern boutiques side by side, and taverns
with chequered tablecloths alongside modern restaurants offering international cuisine. A 20-hectare park dominates the spa’s center. It was designed over 150 years ago and features elements of two landscaping styles prevailing at the time. The part facing the hotel complex, hospital and bath is designed after the French fashion – with wide flowerbeds, rows of
trees and regular geometric shapes. The other, “English” part of the park, towards the foot of the mountain, is wooded and features several recreational tracks. On the rocky hill overlooking the town, between the mountains Vencac and Bukulja, is the entrance to Risovacka Cave. It is a Paleolithic cave and it is accessible to the length of 180 meters.
OPLENAC
On a hill overlooking Topola, eighty kilometers south of Belgrade, is Oplenac, the unofficial capital of the Karadjordjevic dynasty. It is the site of the magnificent Karadjordjevic royal family mausoleum, seen from far away and showing the way to Topola. The church, dedicated to St. George, was built at the beginning of 20th century and is one of the most beautiful orthodox churches in the
world. Its large interior is covered from ceiling to floor with mosaic depictions of biblical scenes, kings and saints. It took over 60 million tiles to recreate many of the most significant and beautiful frescos from Serbia’s historic monasteries. The crypt is the resting place of Vozd (“Chief”) Karadjordje, two kings, two counts, princes, princesses and other members of the royal family. At Oplenac you
can also find royal villas and vineyards, wine cellars and the house of King Petar the First, the Liberator, today housing a museum and gallery. In the adjacent town of Topola, visitors can see Karadjordje’s Town – an authentic space from the period of the First Serbian Uprising against the Turks in 1804, with Karadjordje’s house and a little church.

VIMINACIUM
For the past four decades, the Roman military camp and capital of the province Upper Moesia has been the subject of archaeological research. The destruction it suffered from the Huns is comparable to that suffered by the famous
town near Napoli that was buried by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius. Viminacium, with a population of about fifty thousand, was an important economic, military and strategic center in Roman times. It has been open for tourists since
October 2006, and visitors of the Archaeological Park are primarily interested in the Emperor’s Mausoleum and the fresco painting collection with masterpieces of late antique art. The site is ninety kilometers south of Belgrade, near the town of Kostolac.
Serbian capital. This is a unique lowland fortress stretching on more than ten hectares of land. Modeled on Constantinople, with an irregular triangular shape, surrounded by water on all sides, with numerous towers and walls even four meters thick, the Smederevo fortress long resisted the enemy. It consists of two parts – Mali grad (Little City), Despot Djuradj Brankovic’s
residence, and Veliki grad (Big City), where Serbian people lived and worked.
SMEDEREVO
In mid-nineteenth century, the summer residence of the Obrenovic dynasty was built on the hill above Smederevo, with an amazing view of the Danube and Smederevo vineyards. The Obrenovic family was a line of rulers under whose leadership Serbia finally became free from the Turks after five

The favorite hunting ground of Crown prince Rudolph and Archduke Franz Ferdinand, who were not meant to be Austrian emperors but to whom the pond owes its name; today, it is a nature preserve with a permanent ban on hunting. The preserve covers the area of nearly 1,700 hectares and includes Carska, Perleska and Tiganjika ponds, as well as the old river bed of the
Begej. It is one of the most abundant habitats of various rare marshland birds, plants, and large and small animals. The pond abounds with many species of fish, from bream and crucian carp to European catfish and common carp. The pond’s many channels are great for kayaking, canoeing or paddling; a special attraction is a cruise through this jungle in the middle of Banat
– the boat leaves once a week and carries about 50 people. The castle of Kasel at Ecka is not far away; according to a tradition, this is the place where in 1820 Franz Liszt had his first concert as a nineyear-old boy. Carska Bara is about 80 kilometers away from Belgrade.
