01 Auckland Airport Terminal Development Project Description Client | Auckland International Airport Limited in conjuction with local Iwi (Tribe). 3 Concepts were presented to the client and tribe for the new International and Domestic Terminal Plaza, taking into consideration airport security, circulation, local cultural significance and myths and classic Aotearoa landcape, textures and materials. Creating an iconic touchdown into the international gateway of Aotearoa.
Concept 2 - Taniwha (Water Monster in Maori Legend) Looking inside the belly of the Taniwha that lives in Manukau Harbour adjacent to the location of Auckland Airport.
Concept 2 | Taniwha Local Iwi myth describes a large stingray named Kaiwhare protecting and guarding the entrance of Manukau Harbour. This concept creates not only a symbolic gateway to the entrance of New Zealand but layered wayfinding, an outdoor gallery of New Zealand artists, a covered walkway to Pick up and Drop off areas, and seating/waiting areas for those waiting for loved ones or between flights. This concept was received well by the client and tribe representatives.
01 Ohuarangi Creek Public Open Space Project Description Client | Auckland International Airport Limited in conjuction with Tainui Iwi (Tribe). Ohuarangi Public Open Space is a park designed by Surfacedesign adjacent to previous work Surfacedesign has done for a footprint of an industrial park ‘Landings.’ An open space requested by local iwi in order to create access to the creek that holds cultural significance. Said to be the location of the first waka (canoe) landings in New Zealand. Ideas were requested by the Maori Kingitanga (King) to show a layer of ways to connect and create specific spaces that educate the public to local myths, legends and landscape. We developed a series of 9 collages imagining these spaces. It was received very well by the Maori Kingitanga.

TULUWAT ISLAND
03 Tuluwat Island | Wiyot Tribe Project Description MLA Thesis | Tuluwat Island, Eureka CA My thesis project, The Notion of the Insider and the Outsider, uses landscape architecture as an instrument for communicating the Wiyot indigenous tribe’s rich history and for envisioning their future through principals of ecological democracy. The project’s site is the Wiyot’s ancestral home, a 1.5-acre shell mound called Tuluwat Island; the island itself has both cultural and ecological significance. The 1000-year-old shell mound was built by the Wiyot people and is considered the spiritual “Center of the Wiyot World.” In 1860, the island was the site of the infamous Indian Island massacre, estimated killing up to 300 Wiyot women and children . Tuluwat faces the city of Eureka from across Humboldt Bay and is surrounded by salt marsh and oyster habitat that are increasingly vulnerable due to sea level rise. Today, the island functions as the tribe’s primary ceremonial grounds. Context Diagram Arcata

Project Description ASLA Honor Award 2018 | Paiute Pyramid Lake Reservation, NV Project Partner | Derek Lazo Myth, Memory and Landscape is an ASLA honor award winning project inspired by local myth, serene landscape and conflict . Our aim for the project was to use landscape architecture tools to tell the story of Lake Winemucca, an adjacent lake that dried up due to the siphoning of water for adjacent farm use, creating a string of water wars, loss of the Lahontan Cuthroat Trout and a severe drop of Lake levels for the iconic Pyramid Lake. Using form of topography as storytelling and a method for education, the project aims to give agency to the Paiute to dictate how visitors interact and learn the histories of the land and move through their land with respect and little intervention. We were able to interview and listen to Paiute Reservation Museum caretakers, while the project and final product was received well, there were comments of wanting the ability to not dig the land/and or be able to reverse it back to its original character.

05 Alexandria Centre for Life Sciences Project Description Client | Alexandria Real Estate A life sciences campus located in San Carlos, California. A 3 phase project with collaborating with several prominent Bay Area architects. The landscape design is generally defined by 2 “strands” - The Urban strand and the Green strand. These weave through the campus buildings and have their distinct character, materiality and planting palette. The entire campus boasts a large community park space, several areas to lounge, sit, an orchard, and yoga platforms while creating a cohesive campus language that takes inspiration from life sciences, thoughtful in detail and aiming to be a LEED certified campus.
Urban Strand Entrance between PG1 and B6. Planting study on columnar form trees and formal hedges to define the Urban Strand.
