An innovative wellness concept is coming to Serenbe. The Aging in Place Wellness Campus rethinks the conventional senior living model by “decoupling” housing from medical care while benefiting from extensive community amenities. This allows residents to select their services and access personalized concierge healthcare. The campus will sit in the center of Mado, just across from the Swim Club, Terra School, and the One Mado building, providing additional convenient wellness resources.
The campus will span 8 acres and include housing, street-level retail, a social club, medical offices, and a restaurant. Hospitality services such as housekeeping, laundry, and a social concierge will be provided. Healthcare services will include access to concierge primary care, wellness coaches, and an array of Eastern and Western medicine practitioners. Aging in Place residents will have annual memberships bundled with their housing to the forthcoming concierge practice, Acorn to Oak Health, serving patients from newborns to seniors. Additionally, a two-story social club will provide unparalleled social experiences, featuring: pickleball courts, a fitness center, indoor and outdoor aquatics, a golf simulator, a movie theater, an arcade, a library, and monthly meal credits to Serenbe’s farm-to-table restaurants.
The Aging in Place concept offers a unique opportunity, providing elders with all the features and amenities they could want or need while fostering a sense of shared community belonging. Research shows that seeing children decreases social isolation and fosters inclusion, while intergenerational living improves social and emotional skills for children. With that in mind, Steve Nygren, Serenbe founder, explains: “Our whole goal is free-range kids and
uncaged elders. Placing the campus across from the Terra School was a key choice in location as those that are less mobile will have windows and terraces facing the school with all the engaging activity that comes with it.” To further increase intergenerational interaction, the wellness campus will house more than just seniors. It will include a youth center, general retail, and a public restaurant, allowing all Serenbe residents - young and old - to come together and find community.
Several features set the Aging in Place Wellness Campus apart from traditional senior living developments. The use of color throughout the campus interiors and exteriors is incorporated to stimulate brain function. Prominent staircases will encourage physical activity, emphasizing the importance of whole-body wellness. The campus is also unique as it resides within a walkable community, rather than an isolated or gated setting. Residents will be enriched by Serenbe’s arts programming and nature, with over 20 miles of trails and an organic farm. These aspects are just a few ways in which the Aging in Place campus will incorporate various wellness principles to create a senior living experience that is truly one of a kind.

Serenbe, home to over 1,000 residents, is set to expand with a brand new neighborhood hamlet dedicated to play. In a recent interview with Spa Business magazine, Serenbe founder Steve Nygren unveiled plans for “Spela” – meaning “play” in Swedish – which will become the community’s fourth hamlet, featuring close to 400 homes.
Each hamlet within Serenbe focuses on a different element of a well-lived life: arts for inspiration, agriculture for nourishment, health for wellbeing, and now, play. While designed with the typical Serenbe resident in mind, Spela will also offer larger homes to accommodate families. Benefiting those families is access to the Coweta County school system, providing a new school choice along with the local Terra School and convenient buses taking children to Woodward Academy or Heritage School in Newnan.
Home construction is in its early stages and plans for Spela include a 4-acre park designed for children and adults. This park will blend the natural forest with organized pocket parks for meditation and play structures for all ages. Situated on a hillside, the park will be surrounded by townhomes and cottages, forming an urban wall around the town square. Trails will weave throughout, creating a central gathering place.
Nygren emphasizes the importance of play in wellness and health, stating, “Play brings out curiosity, adventure, whimsy, movement, and risk-taking.We need these elements in our lives to stay vital and stimulate us mentally and physically at every age.”
Spela will incorporate wellness architecture and sustainable features, including EarthCraft certification, geothermal energy, and solar power. This aligns with Serenbe’s commitment to sustainable design and environmentally responsible practices.
Architect Steve Dray describes the neighborhood as “taking inspiration from the Victorian period at the turn of the century and into the 1920s.” While Spela will share design elements with the current Overlook crossroads neighborhood, the larger size will allow for a wider range of architectural styles.Victorian homes will be prevalent, yet modern designs will also be incorporated, ensuring a diverse and vibrant architectural landscape.
Color will play a significant role in Spela’s design, mirroring authentic Victorian homes. The palette will include the original, muted colors of the 1900s, as well as the more vibrant hues reminiscent of San Francisco’s Painted Ladies. This spectrum will range from subtle to bold, encompassing everything from white to black and all shades in between.
As Serenbe expands with Spela, the community reinforces its commitment to integrating wellness and play into daily life. With its thoughtfully designed park, sustainable architecture, and vibrant, family-friendly homes, Spela promises to be a lively and engaging environment for all residents. Nygren’s vision highlights the essential role of play in promoting mental and physical well-being, ensuring that Serenbe continues to be a model for communities that seamlessly blend nature, health, and human connection.

When thinking of a name to encapsulate the combination of culinar y excellence with the finer things in life, Serenbe Founders, the Nygren’s, drew inspiration from their longtime friend, Father Austin Ford. Father Ford was an Episcopal priest and the founder of Emmaus House in Peoplestown, Atlanta, a non-profit aimed at improving the economic and social well-being of residents. He was a Renaissance man with a love for music, art, literature, gardening, food, and spirits- both heavenly and liquid. He also championed the Civil Rights movement and was a progressive man who championed racial integration, economic opportunity for all, and social progress, and was an enlightened leader in Atlanta. Above all, Father Ford was known as a passionate advocate and friend, and the Nygrens wanted to see his memory live on at Austin’s.
Whether you’re looking for a cozy romantic dinner or a spirited setting for a night out with friends, Austin’s will exceed expectations. “Breaking bread and raising a glass in toast is what brings us together,” says Steve Nygren, Serenbe Founder and CEO. “We couldn’t be more excited to showcase what Austin’s offers- great drinks, incredible food, and community in a premier destination in the South.” So, stop by to savor the flavors, soak in the ambiance, and make lasting memories at Austin’s - where each visit celebrates the finest things in life.
Austin’s is located at 9110 Selborne Lane, just around the corner from The Hill restaurant. Austin’s is open Tuesday through Thursday, 5-10 PM and Friday & Saturday, 5-11 PM. Enjoy deals on oysters, bubbles, and rosé during Oyster Happy Hour, Tuesday through Friday, 5-6 PM. See food and cocktail menus at austinsatserenbe.com.

Late March, the 6th Annual Biophilic Leadership Summit was hosted at Serenbe by the Biophilic Institute. The Institute’s mission is to reconnect humans with nature by cultivating biophilic design actions and generating a prolific network of individuals dedicated to furthering the biophilic movement. The summit consisted of a broad panel of esteemed leaders, ranging from architects to professors, biologists, and authors. It served as a meeting place for some of the brightest minds to share their thoughts and knowledge and learn from each other. It focused on promoting biophilic projects, research, and principles, allowing passionate people to come together over shared goals. Melanie Copple, Executive Director of the Biophilic Institute says, “The Biophilic Leadership Summit is a unique, immersive experience that fosters deep connections and visionary thinking with leading biophilic experts. It is an invaluable event for anyone passionate about reconnecting with nature and driving sustainable change across diverse industries.”
The summit began with a Keynote speech from Gary Coates, professor of Architecture at Kansas State University, in which he discussed the “Seven Principles of Biophilic Placemaking in the Architecture of Erik Asmussen,” showcasing how the architect’s sustainable design resulted in enhanced well-being and deepened harmony between architecture and our natural world. After the keynote, Gary did a book signing and conversed with guests about Biophilic Placemaking over cocktails.
The second day of the summit began early with Qigong at sunrise, a traditional Chinese mind-body-spirit practice that combines meditation, breathing techniques, and postures. Following this rejuvenating experience, participants heard from Deb Krebill, retired Marion County Fire Chief who envisioned a biophilic designed fire station to help with firefighters’ PTSD, and architects David Sorg and Landon Burg, brought her vision to reality. They designed the first biophilic Fire Station, which won the prestigious Kellert Design award in 2023, a massive accomplishment in the biophilic industry. The team considered many things, such as incorporating dynamic light, biomorphic shapes and patterns, natural materials, and other natural elements, resulting in a truly spectacular fire station.
After this f antastic morning keynote, attendees were thrilled to welcome Ryan Gravel, creator of Atlanta BeltLine and Michael Phillips, Jamestown President, to chat with Serenbe Founder Steve Nygren in an inspiring fireside chat. The trio discussed the importance of incorporating biophilia in urban design and the community benefits of doing so, both socially and economically. Following the fireside chat, attendees heard from many panelists about designing for nature and urban density, biodiversity and co-existence elements of placemaking. The morning talks concluded with a Wellness Walk with Lost Art of Being Human founder Jennifer Walsh. For the remainder of the day, everyone moved to the Lake Pavillion to learn about Serenbe’s Art Farm campus expansion and the use of Ambisonic Audio Techniques with graduate student Kyle Smith.
On the third and final day of the Summit, guests had the privilege of hearing from additional experts notably Dr. Phillip Tabb, Serenbe land planner, retired professor, and prolific author. In his talk, Dr.Tabb spoke about his new book,Wellness Architecture and Urban Design in which he describes the unique principles he uses when creating biophilic spaces.
The summit was rounded out with delicious food and picturesque strolls around the Serenbe community, making the annual event another spectacular experience. The stimulating speeches and influential guests were inspiring, and the time spent connecting with others served as an excellent opportunity for leaders in the biophilic world to engage with like-minded and passionate people. The Summit highlighted the connection between nature and well-being and helped pave the way for a future rooted in sustainability, ecological awareness, and biophilia. Art serves as an avenue for expression, community building, and fostering connections. At Serenbe, the reverence for art and its transformative impact on society is unwavering and the community eagerly anticipates the arrival of artists from across the globe. This year, the Art Farm at Serenbe had the pleasure of hosting multiple exceptional artists including the nationally recognized, Nikkolas Smith and Gyun Hur. Nikkolas Smith is an artist, author, and illustrator renowned for his distinct style and inspiring artwork. He gained prominence through his portraits and commitment to social justice issues, addressing themes such as racism, police brutality, and inequality. His illustrations have appeared in children’s picture books such as “The 1619 Project: Born on the Water,” “I Am Ruby Bridges,” and “Black Panther Wakanda Forever: The Courage To Dream,” among others. Nikkolas’s journey from aspiring Disney architect to celebrated “artivist”—the integration of art and activism—has been marked by an inspirational dedication to using art as a tool for positive change.
Dur ing his first trip to Georgia this March, Nikkolas Nikkolas showcased his artwork at a pop-up studio, and partnered with Hills & Hamlets Bookshop where he successfully sold all of his signed books. Art Farm also partnered with Terra School at Serenbe to conduct a program full of lessons for young students. The enthusiasm from all participants inspired Smith to embark on a special project: a mural titled “Terra Form.” Nikkolas engaged the students with the question: how do you wish to change the world? He then later gathered all their ideas such as cleaning up the oceans and forests, creating equality, and adding more love to the world. The mural is located at the school’s entrance and serves as a powerful testament to the collective efforts needed to address global challenges and the students’ desires to sustain the planet and humanity. Nikkolas conveyed a message of hope and unity that resonated deeply with the community. This project holds special significance for him, as one of his joys is working with children and inspiring them to make the world a better place.
Dur ing his stay in Serenbe, Nikkolas felt a deep connection with the natural surroundings and vibrant community, always making him feel welcome. Reflecting on his experience, Nikkolas expressed he “always wanted to grow up or live in a place where everybody knows everybody.” Yet, the allure of Serenbe extended beyond its scenic beauty. As a father, he cherished the opportunity for his three-year-old son to experience the joys of nature and community firsthand. Whether exploring the waterfall or collaborating with fellow residents on art projects, Nikkolas found inspiration in the simple pleasures of everyday life in Serenbe. Gyun Hur is another remarkably talented artist who visited Serenbe and overlapped her residency with Nikkolas and his family. Gyun is a contemporary artist renowned for her intricate and immersive installations, which delve into the depths of identity, memory, and
cultural heritage as a Korean-American artist. Gyun has a partnership with Flux Projects, where her latest project titled “Our mother, our water, our peace” is showcased throughout Atlanta. Her artwork reflects on the resilience and love prevalent within Atlanta’s Asian communities, offering a response to the wave of hate crimes against Asians during the pandemic and the tragic spa shooting of 2021.
In 2024, a constellation of glass vessels will be housed among the Atlanta Asian communities. This array of installations will act as poetic nodes that map gestures of grief in both public and private spaces. These handblown, tear-shaped vessels will hold local creek and river water from the Atlanta region and seed conversations around intergenerational work, healing, and community engagement through a series of workshops and gatherings. In 2025, Hur will gather these glass vessels to create a large-scale installation that will open to the public in the spring in the spirit of remembrance, lamentation, and celebration. She will also return to Serenbe for another residency. Another residency of artistic excellence, who stayed for a month, was the highly acclaimed jewelry designer, Douriean Fletcher, whose creations transcend conventional boundaries. Recognized for her masterful craftsmanship and deep cultural resonance, Douriean earned two Oscars as the first jewelry artist for her visual narrative contribution to Marvel’s “Black Panther.” Douriean brought her expertise to Serenbe for the summer months, hosting an exclusive jewelry workshop, open studio hours, and an engaging artist talk. During the workshop, participants had the unique opportunity to design a custom heirloom piece that embodies their individual legacy. Douriean is now working on a limited-edition capsule collection, blending ancient and futuristic aesthetics with unparalleled artistry. Her recent work has been featured at Bergdorf Goodman in New York.
The Art Farm residency program’s upcoming artist is Sophie Cook in partnership with The Atlanta Homes & Lifestyle Serenbe Designer Showhouse fall. Renowned for her exceptional talent in fine porcelain pottery, Sophie Cook specializes in crafting bottles, pods, and teardrops. Partnered with The Object Space, where her work is showcased, Sophie Cook’s artistic prowess has garnered widespread recognition. Her creations have been featured in a variety of museums including the Geffrye Museum, London, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, and the Manchester City Galleries.

Choosing the right school for our children is one of the most important decisions every parent faces. Finding a school that fosters learning about interpersonal relationships, personal growth, and even developing a connection with the natural world is not an easy task. However, the Serenbe community offers all of these values in the neighborhood Terra School. Located in the heart of the community Terra stands as an exemplar of community-based STEAM education, fostering a lifelong passion for learning through learner-centric, experimental, and culturally responsive approaches. Originally established as a one-room school serving Chattahoochee Hills and nearby cities, Terra School has evolved and expanded. In 2023, it welcomed a new state-of-the-art campus with multiple light-filled classrooms and expansive outdoor learning spaces, while broadening its reach to encompass students from Coweta, Carroll, and Fayetteville. Today, with over 200 students hailing from 19 cities across Georgia, Terra School continues to redefine educational excellence.
Terra School has consistently emphasized the significance of creating and maintaining a bond between students and our natural environment. Their campus currently possesses access to an immense green space, woods, and streams for children to explore, play, and connect. Terra has embarked on a new project to bring together education and the natural world with a Hidden Library. Actively engaged in fundraising efforts for the construction of this new addition the school has achieved a remarkable milestone by collecting $140,000 out of the $350,000 required to meet their fundraising goal for this new exciting amenity.
The Hidden Librar y will be an innovative learning space to be built into a hilltop, looking out from the woods on the edge of the school campus. This visionary project will feature openair connections and a screened-in porch, seamlessly blending with the natural surroundings.
Once completed, the Hidden Library will offer a variety of children’s books for kids of all ages, with an open space designed to cultivate a deep appreciation for reading, learning, and even spending time with one another while enjoying breathtaking natural views. The Hidden Library will be split into two different areas for both lower and upper school students, each space will focus exclusively on the different learning objectives of each level. The lower level will have access to material that fosters the Montessori philosophies, while the upper level will include publications on curiosity, real-world problem-solving, and effective communication. Serenbe and Terra School are thrilled with the unfolding of this exciting venture, offering learners a dynamic and immersive educational experience amidst the beauty of nature.
Terra parent, architect, and interior designer William Hunter crafted the visionary concept for the new school library. His renowned expertise assures a truly spectacular rendition of the nature-filled library. Recognized for his transformative design endeavors, Hunter has been celebrated for multiple residential projects featured in national publications such as Dwell and Design Milk. 9.
Hunter, along with his wife and two young boys, moved to Georgia from California. They had acquired a dated family home located in the mountains of Los Angeles and embarked on a journey to reimagine its potential. Hunter designed and renovated the space into a stunning modern cabin-like abode that seamlessly integrates with its natural surroundings. His visionary work epitomizes the harmonious fusion of architecture and nature, setting the stage for the upcoming Hidden Library to become a beacon of inspired learning within the Terra School campus and Serenbe community.
The Terra School at Serenbe places emphasis on student-centric learning that nurtures independence, creativity, and a deep love for learning. Learn more about Terra, support the Hidden Library, and view programs for infants through high school at terratserenbe.org.
