2022 FALL ISSUE BROADWAY SPOTLIGHT

Broadway Spotlight had the opportunity to sit down with Fred Dixon, President & CEO of NYC & Company, to discuss travelers returning to New York and how Broadway plays such a key role in the city’s thriving tourism industry.

TELL US HOW NEW YORK CITY IS RESPONDING TO VISITORS RETURNING TO THE BIG APPLE.

We are delighted to be welcoming visitors back to New York City. As we do so, we are encouraging travelers to explore the destination like a New Yorker through our recently launched “Get Local NYC” campaign, spotlighting unique experiences and small businesses found in neighborhoods throughout all five boroughs. We also continue to spotlight what’s new and trending throughout the city, including new Broadway shows and cultural exhibitions, hotel and infrastructure upgrades, recently opened attractions and restaurants, and much more.

FROM A SAFETY PERSPECTIVE, WHAT CAN VISITORS EXPECT WHEN RETURNING FOR THE FIRST TIME TO NEW YORK CITY?

As New York City continues to recover from the pandemic, the energy on our streets is palpable. Travelers can be confident in booking their trips to NYC and we look forward to safely welcoming them to the world’s most dynamic, most diverse, and most hospitable destination.

WHAT’S THE IMPORTANCE OF BROADWAY TO NEW YORK CITY TOURISM?

Whether a first-timer or a repeat visitor, a trip to New York City is not complete without a Broadway show. There is nothing quite like Broadway, where audiences can experience the joy of seeing world-class theatre, from beloved longrunning musicals to innovative new plays. Broadway is a great testament to New York City’s resilience and vibrancy, and we proudly invite visitors to enjoy a performance for themselves this summer and beyond.

WHY IS NOW THE PERFECT TIME TO PLAN A VISIT TO NEW YORK CITY?

We are reminding travelers from around the world that if they don’t visit New York City now, they are missing out. The five boroughs have so much to offer, from iconic sites such as the Empire State Building, the Bronx Zoo, Coney Island, and Statue of Liberty, to new attractions like the SUMMIT One Vanderbilt observatory and the free Little Island Park in the Hudson River. Even if you have visited before, there is always something new and enticing to discover.

HOW IS BROADWAY HELPING VISITORS EXPERIENCE THE DIVERSE CULTURAL LANDSCAPE OF NEW YORK CITY?

Broadway holds the unique position to share diverse stories and perspectives with visitors from around the globe, while showcasing the incredible talent of New York City’s artists. As part of NYC & Company’s “The Black Experience in NYC” content hub on NYCGO. com, we recently partnered with  MJ The Musical  to help amplify the show’s partnership with the iconic Apollo Theater and Melba’s Restaurant in Harlem and highlight ways that visitors can support Black-owned businesses through the five boroughs. Additionally, we work in partnership with Broadway shows that amplify Black stories through our interview series, “Black Voices on Broadway,” which takes an in-depth look into the experiences of Black playwrights and actors on Broadway as they create new work and share what it was like to return to the stage last fall.
