BROADWAY'S GREAT BIG MUSICAL COMEDY!
enjoying the magic of a Broadway performance in New York City will be a formative experience they’ll never forget. From the stunning scenery and glittering costumes to the bright lights and world class performers and musicians, there’s a reason why a visit to Broadway tops the bucket lists of people from all around the world. For those group members who want to get in on all the action Broadway has to offer, a wide variety of educational and enlightening Broadway Inbound workshops and behind-the-scenes tours are just the thing. Taught by Broadway professionals, workshops and master classes are a great way to enrich the theatrical experience of any group.
No matter if your group is filled with ambitious students or professionals looking to partake in a unique corporate team-building outing, Broadway Inbound’s workshops can be customized to perfectly meet the needs and goals of any group. Workshops, which typically range between 60-90 minutes in length, are often hosted in actual Broadway rehearsal spaces in the Times Square area, making for a truly authentic experience.
“Participants work and meet with active professionals working in the entertainment industry,” said Michael Watson, President, Broadway InMotion Inc., which directs the workshops.
“Not only do Broadway performers share their talents in our workshops, we also have experienced lighting
designers, stage managers, makeup artist, conductors, costumers and choreographers share their expertise with groups.”
Each workshop is also a fully private event, allowing for specific focus on your group’s abilities, age range, special needs, level of experience, and even a particular show you’re attending. Your group doesn’t need to be studying theatre in order to enjoy what each workshop has to offer! The workshop teaching artists—which include actors, musicians, designers and technicians—have a wide range of professional experience and are excited to craft their workshops around a particular show or technical need.
Keep reading as we explore the many opportunities and subject areas available, from dance, vocal and instrumental music to acting, auditioning, improvisation, technical theatre and more.
EACH WORKSHOP IS A FULL PRIVATE EVENT, ALLOWING FOR SPECIFIC FOCUS on your group's abilities, age range, special needs, level of experience, and even a particular show you're attending.
Broadway has no shortage of talented dancers. Let your group step into their shoes with a selection of workshops for the newer dancers to the advanced and every level in between.
“Our dance instructors are experienced in ballet, jazz, modern and tap,” Watson said, explaining that workshop students are taught how to focus and pick up a dance combination quickly in a nurturing atmosphere. “The dance workshops aren’t about being perfect, but learning style and bringing oneself to the choreography by expressing their very own unique personality.”
Groups could experience the different styles of Broadway choreographers with the “A 5678”
workshop, designed for the serious dancer to learn a combination in a nurturing environment while learning how to pick up a combination quickly, in addition to the callback procedure and how to get the job.
Those looking to feel more confident in their movement will love the “Everybody Dance: Movement for Actors” workshop, which encourages participants to let down their defenses and express movement in a positive and joyful way. This workshop is a wonderful choice for those who are self-conscious about their bodies and dancing.
Groups could also dabble in workshops centered on ballet, contemporary, hip hop, Fosse-style dance, jazz, tap and more.
In addition to dance, much intentional movement and acting goes into the creation of a successful Broadway performance.
The “Stage Combat” workshop gets participants on their feet and explores the different techniques used to safely and convincingly pull off fight and stunt choreography, in addition to what it takes to collaborate with your fellow actors in a stunt setting.
“For theatre and film students, it’s very important to understand what goes into fight choreography,” Watson explained, emphasizing that safety is always taught first. “Learning these skills can make actors more comfortable with using their body while also protecting themselves and
their fellow actors. It also teaches preventative techniques to avoid accidents from happening. Our stage combat instructors are the most sought-after fight choreographers in the country, working in television, film and the Broadway stage.”
Take things a step further with the “Enter Acting – Acting” workshop, where participants will be encouraged to use their imagination to build trust in their talent and find the truth of the moment through various acting exercises. Don’t forget workshops in improvisation, script analysis and much more.
“THE DANCE WORKSHOPS AREN’T ABOUT BEING PERFECT, but learning style and bringing oneself to the choreography by expressing their very own unique personality.”
Often one of the most enthralling parts of a Broadway performance are the vocal and musical elements of a show.
“Performers can learn how to communicate a song, bringing their own voice to the material,” Watson said. “The vocal workshops also concentrate on breath control. By breathing correctly, the voice is supported, allowing their instrument to flow freely. They also are encouraged to let go and just have fun singing.”
“The Singer and The Musician” workshop melds the two together by having participants listen in as a Broadway conductor and actor discuss the intricacies of a musical, how they work together to produce something magical, and how to maintain
consistency in an eight-show week. And with auditions being a huge part of the Broadway experience, groups will love taking part in the “Broadway Beat” workshop, which prepares participants to make the most of an open audition when the performer is only given a limited amount of time and 16 bars of music to work with. The class is structured as an audition with an emphasis on vocal technique, focus and being specific with the actor’s material. Additional vocal and musical opportunities include an orchestral workshop, learning to sing as one (ideal for choirs looking to better blend their sound), and more.

Though you may feel confident in your abilities to act, sing, dance or play an instrument, you may want more experience with the ins and outs of working in Broadway. Thankfully, there are plenty of workshops that allow you to walk in the shoes of professionals working on Broadway today!
The “Audition Workshop” is the perfect way to get your feet wet. The workshop touches on elements like monologues, cold readings, and the presentation of entering a room—real world factors to consider when going out for a Broadway audition.
Though Watson says though no audition will ever be “perfect,” performers are taught the importance of simply breathing and being in the moment in both rehearsals and performances.
“Everyone has their own special and unique quality—there is no one like
you! If you try and copy another actor, it will not be authentic. A casting director or director wants to see what you bring to the project,” Watson said. “We also stress the importance of being prepared. Know the show you’re auditioning for and the playwright’s name. Know who the director is and what they’ve done. Do your research! Do as much prep work as you can before the audition and then let it go. If you learn to be in the moment, you will also be able to take direction.”
Groups could also hear directly from a casting director on what it takes to market yourself as an actor and be seen with the “Wanted: Experienced Actors” workshop; learn a musical number from a current Broadway show with “A Broadway Rehearsal” workshop; hear the experiences of a professional actor, director, choreographer, casting director or agent during a “Meet the Artist Series Q&A” and more.
Step behind the curtain to experience workshops that offer an inside look at what goes on leading up to and during show from a technical angle. The “Let’s Get Technical” workshop sets groups up with a Broadway stage manager or set/lighting designer to learn all about the technical execution of a director’s vision and the collaborative process of lighting and designing a set for a production.
If makeup interests your group, the “Makeup” workshop should be a must on your list! In this workshop, a makeup professional from the theatre or film industry will demonstrate new ways to apply makeup on one or more
workshop participants. Because trends and techniques are always changing and evolving, this workshop will prove to be both timely and exciting. Groups could even go behind-thescenes with “Behind the Emerald Curtain,” an exclusive look at Wicked and the 125 people it takes to make every performance happen. The guided tour, led by cast members, takes participants through the Behind the Emerald Curtain Museum, where they could admire an elaborate set model and get an up-close look at some costumes (with beautiful details that are not always visible from the audience), as well as actual props and wigs from the show.
“DO AS MUCH PREP WORK AS YOU CAN BEFORE THE AUDITION AND THEN LET IT GO.
If you learn to be in the moment, you will also be able to take direction.”
Continue pulling back the curtain with a visit to the Museum of Broadway, an interactive and experiential museum that celebrates Broadway’s rich history, the behind-the-scenes and its game changers. Groups could spend between 60 to 120 minutes exploring the museum, which was created in collaboration with internationally renowned artists, designers and theatre historians. Whether groups visit the Map Room—which shares the history and migration of New York City’s theaters through immersive video projections—or the Timeline, which looks inside some of the most momentous musicals that changed the Broadway landscape forever, groups will leave informed and inspired.
The “Broadway Bound” workshop, which shares what it takes to get a production on Broadway, along with the “Welcome to Broadway” pre-show, oneon-one experience with a professional actor, are additional opportunities your groups won’t want to miss.
Watson explains that being a wellrounded performer means tuning your instrument—your voice, dance ability and acting skills—through practice. The workshops mentioned above are a great way to do just that.
“It’s pure joy when we experience students’ excitement about being in the studio and learning about the Broadway theatre!”

NYC is a busy place, but it adds to the excitement of going to a Broadway show. Here are some tips:
» Know where your theatre is and give yourself plenty of time to get there.
» Don’t bring outside food or drinks with you.
» For everyone’s safety, masks are recommended at the theatre.
» There will be security at the door, and every person must have their own ticket to enter.
» Most of all, turn your phones off and enjoy the show without distractions.
» Always request the maximum number of tickets you could possibly use.
» Provide up to two alternate choices (seating, date, or show) when placing a request. Think about what’s important to your group and add your alternate choices accordingly.
» For best availability, consider requesting the front mezzanine, which can provide a great view and increase your chances of getting the show and date you want.
