THE STORY OF THE STREETS SO FAR…
CELEBRATE YOUR HIGH STREET
“One of the best things about London is how much is going on around every corner, and in each and every community. Festivals like The Streets are doing excellent work to highlight some of the capital’s local gems. As Mayor, I want to celebrate the fact that our wealth of cultural riches are not just limited to central London.” SADIQ KHAN, MAYOR OF LONDON
The Streets is an ambitious and dynamic music and performance project taking place across seven outer-London boroughs in 2015 and now 2016. It has and will continue to bring high quality arts and culture to high streets, where local residents and visitors can expect to be surprised as a new soundscape wakes up their streets. Acclaimed live music and event producer Serious is working with a consortium of seven boroughs to animate local areas and better connect people and places - all by using the communal space of the high street as its stage.
THE BOROUGHS & HIGH STREETS TWICKENHAM in Richmond upon Thames TOOTING in Wandsworth ILFORD in Redbridge LEYTON in Waltham Forest WOOLWICH in Royal Borough of Greenwich KINGSTON in Kingston upon Thames SOUTH NORWOOD in Croydon It launched in July 2015 by touring an international percussionist, Ben Walsh, and his 8ft wheel of drums to a wide range of locations on the high streets (including the roof of Tooting Broadway station)! Continuing into the autumn with a programme of pop-up performances as part of the EFG London Jazz Festival, The Streets has officially made itself known as a creative force in delivering something new and exciting on local high streets.

“It will bring a wealth of inspiring activities to audiences…and we hope will not only excite, but also create a lasting impression that will see more and more people engage with arts and cultural activities.” JOYCE WILSON, LONDON AREA DIRECTOR, ARTS COUNCIL ENGLAND At its heart, The Streets is an urban regeneration project which aims to encourage local residents, high street businesses, young people and visiting audiences to reimagine their public spaces. It will promote the distinctiveness of local high streets and their communities, showcasing areas of outer-London which deserve greater profile and recognition for what is already on offer. High streets have long been the epicentre of local communities; a space which is saturated in local heritage and should be harnessed as hubs of social, cultural and artistic identities. The Streets will reignite
the energy and identity of high streets, by coupling commercial priorities with cultural activity. It stages dynamic and spectacular performances whilst stimulating local participationand discovery. This year, The Streets is back and will involve local collaborations between councils, high street businesses, schools, community groups and arts organisations, working with Serious to bring local and international artists together to create a pan-London celebration of local high streets. Throughout July, each borough will host a two-day street Festival and vocal extravaganza and November will,
once again, see a rich programme with EFG London Jazz Festival comes to The Streets. Read on to see full programme details for each high street. Expect live music, dances and parades to be popping up in the most unexpected of places. Explore the rich history of these neighbourhoods through a heritage-inspired strand and engage with artists and music in new ways through participation and workshop opportunities. Most importantly - take part, be inspired and see the impact.
Visit www.thestreets.london for more and join the conversation with #TheStreetsLondon “The arts bring us together in a shared experience of creativity and expression and what better place to do this than on our high streets. Arts and regeneration hand in hand is the key to unlocking our future prosperity.” GUY NICHOLSON, LONDON COUNCILS

GET INVOLVED - BE INSPIRED - SEE THE IMPACT
LOCAL BUSINESSES AND HIDDEN GEMS REDISCOVERED
An urban regeneration project, The Streets uses live music and performance to inspire a passion for your high streets. By bringing in world class musicians to shops, cafes and public places in seven outer-London boroughs, we want to have an impact on how residents, consumers and visitors engage and value their high streets. We work with businesses to offer something bigger and better than before and create a legacy where high streets can be seen as creative, fun and exciting places to be.
The Streets has enabled businesses to engage with their customers in new and imaginative ways. They have attracted new (and entertained existing) customers by offering unique and surprising experiences, whilst also being inspired as to how best to showcase their offering through creative window presentations. The project has shown how cultural activity can be a catalyst for achieving commercial success, illustrating how businesses can connect and contribute to a more vibrant high street.
CASE STUDIES FROM 2015 Retail Chain: JOHN LEWIS Global Food Outlet: MCDONALD’S The local Manager for the Woolwich branch of McDonald’s was approached in the lead up to the autumn 2015 activity and have remained one of the most enthusiastic business hosts. • As part of the EFG London Jazz Festival comes to The Streets, they had a swinging brass band parade around the store, entertaining and delighting their customers. • A 9% increase of sales was noted on the day of the performance. • They also provided a board room as a project hub for the production team and commented that this made them feel part of something special and boosted staff morale.
Located in Kingston’s town centre, retail giant John Lewis became interested in the project after it launched in July 2015 and have re-established their relationship with the local council since being involved. • They hosted performances during the autumn 2016 programme, including a set by an international a cappella band from the balcony of their top floor to delighted shoppers on a busy Sunday afternoon. • As a large and established retail chain, their participation was about increasing their customers’ shopping experience and creating a positive association to their brand. John Lewis customers are loyal consumers; the inclusive nature, vibrancy and quality of the music delivered by The Streets helped remind them why they keep coming back.
Independent Café: YEHA NOHA Yeha Noha in South Norwood, hosted the launch event for the high street in July 2015, where live music was performed on a stage from their street-facing courtyard. They received new business opportunities from the project and filled their space on what would have typically been a quiet weekday of trade. • They also were part of the EFG London Jazz Festival comes to The Streets in November 2015, hosting 4 free performances across a weekend of events. Not typically opening on Sundays, they gained an extra day of trade and had to instill a one-in-one-out policy across the whole weekend due to popular demand. Revenue in this period increased dramatically due to this sharp increase in footfall and engagement. • Through wide exposure of their association to the Streets, the café have programmed their own music evening with an established artist introduced to them by the project producers, Serious. They were even able to charge ticket prices due to customers increased expectation of their offer. • They will continue a to be a key host for events in 2016 featuring on further promotional material, the website, photography and filming and will form part of its legacy.
WHAT THE AUDIENCES THOUGHT
WORD ON THE STREET “It was amazing to be a part of The Streets. Over the two days there was a real buzz in the air with all the activity…We noticed a significant increase in sales on the Saturday…we doubled our takings that day. The workshops also brought lots of new people to our shop who otherwise wouldn’t have known we were here. It was a very busy and lively day.” Route to Juice, Tooting “Thank you very much for bringing the Jazz Café and Tea Dance to the Town Hall, we did indeed see a raise in the day’s takings, it seemed to be a big hit on all aspects.” Redbridge Town Hall catering “The reaction and energy was wonderful. Everyone had a great time and our traders were really pleased that you were able to attract crowds of visitors in and through the market. I would recommend your project to any market, council, Town Centre, as the results were brilliant.” Tooting Market
“[From hosting The Streets] we realised how flexible our space is…It gave us the confidence to promote ourselves as a venue and use it for our own events…We are now on the radar as a venue for other events ranging from board meetings to hosting an act during the Wandsworth Fringe Festival.” Wandsworth Oasis charity shop
The Streets is about creating positive impacts for high streets and to encourage people to spend more time and money in their local area, creating better connections to businesses and their local spaces. Feedback from audiences in 2015 suggests the project is doing just that: • 61% of people planned their trip specifically to see the event. • 73% of people felt they had discovered something new about their town centre. Here’s a snapshot of how they described the activity: Research by the Audience Agency, November 2015
We value our local collaborations and are still looking for more ways to connect to your area. If you would like to get involved in some way, either for July or November, get in touch now by visiting

Cute, sassy and fun - The Tootsie Rollers will bring a new glamour and sparkle to The Streets.
LONDON After 10 years of battling at the top level, performing worldwide, individually pioneering their art form, The Beatbox Collective is formed of the leading beatbox artists in the UK. Each credited for their respective styles and statuses, they have merged to form incredibly high impact and energetic shows, ranging from live music production of all genres, physical theatrics and crowd participation. No two shows are ever the same! The Beatbox Collective line-up features an impressive list of world titles and awards, including multiple UK Champions and World and UK Female Champion Bellatrix. Not least, as a Collective they were also crowned the World Beatbox Champions last year. This group is opening up eyes, ears and dance floors to the dynamics an elite group of vocalists can deliver. This is an experience for all audiences, giving the understanding of what can be done with just musical minds and microphones and pushing the boundaries of the human vocals.
MEN’S CHORUS
The London Gay Men’s Chorus is no ordinary choir. It started life in 1991, when nine friends sang Christmas carols at Angel Underground Station to raise money for the Terrence Higgins Trust. Fast-forward to today and this once small band of singers, has over 200 members, and is the largest gay choir in Europe. The Chorus entertains, inspires and educates through song - performing a diverse range of music to the highest technical standard and regularly playing to sell-out crowds at the Southbank Centre, Cadogan Hall and the Roundhouse. Over the years, the Chorus has worked with a diverse range of artists including Mark Ronson, Elton John, Lesley Garrett, Dolly Parton, Hannah Waddingham, Simon Callow and Sandi Toksvig. The LGMC has also appeared on Children In Need, Comic Relief, The One Show, The Graham Norton Show and Top of the Pops.
House Gospel Choir (HGC) are famous for delivering a live show that’s epic in every sense of the word. Singing the biggest house tunes of the ‘90s amped up to the max by a team of 25-plus, including a live DJ, percussion, bass and keys, seasoned director and vocal powerhouse, ShezAr, will be sure to take you on a musical journey of pure elation. House Gospel Choir bring together outstanding voices and musicians and take them to a place where spirituality and euphoria meet. The late, great Frankie Knuckles called house music ‘church for people who have fallen from grace’ and anyone who has been caught up in the rapture of a true house classic can testify to its power to unify and uplift. This is the House Gospel Choir guarantee. Since first hitting the stage at the 2014 Glastonbury Festival they’ve worked with everyone from The Kooks to Labrinth and Gorgon City. They’ve performed for Princes (William and Harry) and toured to Australia to perform at the Perth International Arts Festival (PIAF). The choir invites you to be their ‘house guests’ to meet, sing and dance with the choir that house built.
If you want song delivered with unfettered enthusiasm, alongside vibrant and original arrangements, then LGMC are not be missed. Get down to your high street and join the party.
‘The performers’ enthusiasm was infectious: the group clearly enjoy being up on stage so much that it was hard not to smile - and sing - along.’ Eastern Daily Press

THE
SWINGLES
For more than half a century The Swingles have pushed the boundaries of vocal music. The seven young singers who make up today’s London-based group are driven by the same innovative spirit that has defined the five-time Grammy® winners since they first made waves in the 1960s. Since then their repertoire has grown to include a huge variety of music, as well as new original songs. With two new albums in 2015 (Deep End and Yule Songs vol.II), the current group celebrates that legacy by starting a whole new chapter.
The group’s versatility has led to collaborations with artists as diverse as the Modern Jazz Quartet, Jamie Cullum and Labrinth. Luciano Berio was one of the first composers to explore the sound of the Swingles’ amplified voices in an orchestral setting, and the group continues to perform his groundbreaking Sinfonia around the world. Their style is one of pure class and their vocals coordinated with unprecedented virtuosity – an act not to be missed! theswingles.co.uk @swinglesingers facebook.com/TheSwingles
