PROFILE BOOKS AUTUMN 2018
2017 was the year of speaking out – and seeing what a difference our voices could make. It was the year people took to the streets for demonstrations and protests, that young voters derailed a Tory landslide in the UK and that we finally started discussing Women & Power in the same sentence. But 2018 is a new year, and let’s not fool ourselves our job here is done. Profile has always been proud to publish books written with courage and conviction and this season is no exception. So, we’re rolling up our sleeves for Francis Fukuyama’s sharp analysis of divisive political narratives in Identity, and tuning in for Oliver Bullough’s exposé of how the super-rich corrupted our democracies in Moneyland. Mary Beard and David Olusoga are standing by with fresh takes on global history in Civilisations, and Norman Stone’s Hungary serves up forensic analysis of the despots, dictatorships and democratic disasters that have littered European history. Of course, speaking out is no good if what you have to say is offensive, untrue and downright incoherent. Diplomacy is a non-starter without basic linguistic skills, so we’ll be hoping President Trump picks up a copy of Babel, Gaston Dorren’s guide to the world’s most-spoken languages. Fingers crossed that 2018 is the year that liars, bullies and bigots everywhere get their comeuppance – and if we find it hard to suppress a smirk at their downfall, Tiffany Watt Smith’s short and spirited defence of Schadenfreude is on hand to reassure you, that’s only human. Happy reading! ANDREW FRANKLIN PUBLISHER

Civilisations How Do We Look & The Eye of Faith Companion to the 2018 BBC series CIVILISATIONS The idea of ‘civilisation’ has always been debated, even fought over. At the heart of those debates lies the big question of how people – from prehistory to the present day – have depicted themselves and others, both human and divine. In Part One, Beard examines how the human figure was portrayed in some of the earliest art in the world – from the gigantic stone heads carved by the Olmec of Central America to the statues and pottery of the ancient Greeks. In Part Two, Beard turns to the relationship between art and religion. For centuries, religion has inspired art: from the Hindu temple at Angkor Wat to the exquisite calligraphy of Islamic mosques. But making the divine visible in the human world has never been simple. All religions have wrestled with idolatry and iconoclasm, destroying art as well as creating it. Distinguished historian Mary Beard explores how art has shaped, and been shaped by, the people who created it. How have we looked at these images? And why have they sometimes been so contentious?
Mary Beard is a professor of classics at Newnham College, Cambridge, and the classics editor of the TLS. She has world-wide academic acclaim. Her previous books include the bestselling, Wolfson Prizewinning Pompeii, The Parthenon, Confronting the Classics, SPQR and most recently Women & Power. Her blog A Don’s Life has been collected in two volumes.

Identity The Demand for Dignity and the Politics of Resentment A provocative examination of modern identity politics In 2014, Francis Fukuyama wrote that American and global institutions were at risk of being captured by powerful interest groups. Two years later, his predictions were borne out by the rise to power of political outsiders whose authoritarian tendencies threaten to destabilise the international order. These populist nationalists seek direct connection to ‘the people’, usually defined in narrow terms. The universal recognition on which liberal democracy is based has been increasingly challenged by restrictive recognition based on nation, religion, sect, race, ethnicity or gender, which have resulted in the upsurge of politicised Islam, the fractious environment of college campuses, and the emergence of white nationalism. Identity is a sharp warning that unless we forge a universal understanding of human dignity, we doom ourselves to continual conflict. Francis Fukuyama is a professor at Stanford University’s Institute for International Studies. He has previously taught at Johns Hopkins University and at George Mason University. Fukuyama was a researcher at the RAND Corporation and served as the Deputy Director for the State Department’s Policy planning staff.

Dramatic Exchanges The Lives and Letters of the National Theatre Correspondence between the most celebrated actors, directors and playwrights of the past fifty years There has always been as much drama offstage as on at the National Theatre, and much of it is to be found in the letters, telegrams and colourful postcards of its main players. This book brings together the most inspiring, dramatic and amusing correspondence from the life of Britain’s most beloved theatre: from Laurence Olivier’s gracious rejection letters to Peter Hall’s combative memos; from Helen Mirren’s impassioned defence of theatrical innovation to a Tory politician’s brutal telegram damning a play; from fantastical good-luck missives to long conspiratorial letters. Together, they reveal the stories behind some of the most daring, lavish, triumphant and disastrous productions in the theatre’s history, including Amadeus, The History Boys and War Horse - as well as the occasional disaster. A rich collection of correspondence like no other, this book offers a fascinating and celebratory look at the world of theatre and beyond.
Daniel Rosenthal has written on theatre and film for The Times, Independent and Observer, and his previous books include the award-winning The National Theatre Story, and 100 Shakespeare Films. He has chaired thirty National Theatre Platforms and was Associate Producer of the BBC Four Arena documentaries on the National Theatre.

The Art of Logic Making Sense in a World that Doesn’t A survival guide for the post-truth world using the timeless methods of logic, from the Royal Society Prize shortlisted mathematician Emotions are powerful. In newspaper headlines and on social media, they have become the primary way of understanding the world. But strong feelings make it more difficult to see the reality behind the rhetoric. In The Art of Logic, Eugenia Cheng shows how mathematical logic can help us see things more clearly – and know when politicians and companies are trying to mislead us. First, Cheng explains how to use black-and-white logic to illuminate the world around us, giving us new insight into thorny political questions like public healthcare, Black Lives Matter and Brexit. Then she explains how logic and emotions, used side-by-side, can help us be both more rational individuals, and also live more thoughtfully. Clear-sighted, revelatory and filled with useful real-life examples of logic and illogic at work, The Art of Logic is an essential guide to decoding modern life. WILLIAM MILLER
Gloucester Crescent Me, My Dad and Other Grown-Ups Growing up amid the most brilliant intellectuals of a generation Gloucester Crescent is a leafy street in Camden. Unremarkable in many ways, unless you notice the lady in the van parked outside one house, and the famous-looking residents crossing the road ... which you wouldn’t if you were just one of the local children who played there every day. Written through the eyes of a growing child, this is the story of a family and their circle of friends who all lived in one of London’s most iconic streets in the 60s, 70s and 80s. It captures an extraordinary time in Britain’s cultural history – and provides a hitherto unseen portrait of some of the brightest minds of a generation – but it also tells the funny, tender and moving story of a young boy struggling to find his own identity. We follow William through an extraordinary ordinary childhood, from sitting exams in the shadow of a brilliant father, to watching the moon landing with a room full of comedians. Gloucester Cresent is absorbing, hilarious and at times heartbreaking.
William Miller is a television producer and media executive. He has been Nigella Lawson’s business partner, and has worked with Louis Theroux, Kirsty Allsopp and Phil Spencer. In 2009 William returned to Gloucester Crescent where he now lives, three doors from his parents, with his wife and two teenage daughters.

Darwin’s Most Wonderful Plants Darwin’s Botany Today A rediscovery of Darwin the revolutionary botanist Most of us think of Darwin at work on The Beagle, taking inspiration for his theory of evolution from his travels in the Galapagos. But Darwin published his Origin of Species nearly thirty years after his voyages, and most of his labours in that time were focused on experimenting with and observing plants. He was particularly interested in carnivorous and climbing plants, and in pollination and the evolution of flowers. Ken Thompson sees Darwin as a revolutionary botanist whose observations and theories are often only now being confirmed by high-tech modern research. Like Darwin, Thompson is fascinated and amazed by the powers of plants – particularly their Triffid-like aspects of movement, hunting and ‘plant intelligence’. This is a much-needed book that re-establishes Darwin as a pioneering botanist, whose close observations of plants were crucial to his theories of evolution.

IAIN SINCLAIR
Living with Buildings Health & architecture A groundbreaking exploration of how architecture affects our health from one of Britain’s finest writers Buildings shape our lives and our health. They affect how we sleep, work, socialise and even breathe. They can isolate us, make us sick or put us in danger, but they can also heal. We, in turn, make our buildings an extension of ourselves: our hopes, fears and vanities. The structures we choose to inhabit absorb our histories and leave traces for future generations to read. In Living With Buildings Iain Sinclair embarks on a series of journeys – through London, Marseilles, the Outer Hebrides and Sweden – to explore the conflicted relationship between sickness and structure. He investigates the connection between art, architecture, social planning and health, and considers the notion that we refine our own pathologies until we locate the buildings in which to place them. A father and his daughter, who suffers from a rare syndrome, return to the estate where they once lived. A whalebone box, a fetish made for contemplation of mortality, is carried back to the Isle of Harris with unexpected consequences. Part travelogue, part polemic, part poem, Living With Buildings brings Sinclair’s writing to new and exciting places. Living with Buildings accompanies a major Wellcome Collection exhibition.
Iain Sinclair was born in South Wales and lives, walks and writes in East London. His books include Downriver (winner of the James Tait Black Memorial Prize and the Encore Prize), Lights Out for the Territory, London Orbital, Hackney, That Rose-Red Empire, American Smoke and The Last London.

Body of Essays Great writers get under the skin Leading authors tackle different body parts in this squeamish and surprising collection accompanying a BBC radio series Buried beneath layers of flesh, our hearts pump, our lungs inflate, our kidneys filter. These organs, and others, are essential to our survival but remain largely unknown to us. And yet they all have stories to tell. And who better to tell them than fifteen of the world’s finest writers? Working with medical experts, each writer has chosen a different organ: Naomi Alderman unravels the intestines and our obsession with food and digestion; AL Kennedy gets inside the nose and our sense of smell; Philip Kerr traces the development of brain surgery; and Ned Beauman argues that the appendix might not be as useless as we think. Published to accompany Radio 3’s Body of Essays series, the pieces have never before appeared in print. The human stomach, we discover, contains as many brain cells as a cat has in its head. Schadenfreude The joy of another’s misfortune A hilarious quest to understand life’s ultimate guilty pleasure – in a beautiful gift package
Times I have felt pleased that things went wrong for others: 1: Watching my over-confident boss botch his fancy PowerPoint presentation 2. Catching an ‘urban unicyclist’ nearly colliding with a parked car 3: My effortlessly attractive friend getting dumped Schadenfreude – enjoying the failures of others – is an all-too-familiar feeling. It has perplexed philosophers and psychologists for centuries but, what with polarised politics, Twitter trolls and ‘sidebars of shame’, we’re now said to be living in the ‘Age of Schadenfreude’. But why can it be so much fun to witness another’s distress? And what, if anything, should we do about it? Historian of emotions Tiffany Watt Smith offers expert insight and advice. Ranging from Nietzsche to Homer Simpson, investigating the latest scientific research, and collecting outrageous confessions on the way, she argues that Schadenfreude can reveal profound truths about our relationships and our sense of ourselves. Frank, warm and laugh-out-loud funny, Schadenfreude makes the case for thinking afresh about this much-maligned emotion.

Hungary A Short History Hungary for academics and travellers alike Hungary has a fascinating and complicated history. Norman Stone, pre-eminent historian of central Europe, traces its roots to the nationalist movements of the nineteenth century, the revolutions of 1848, the economy of Buda and Pest and the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian empire. When Hungary was born in 1918, it was one-third the size of the twin-headed Austro-Hungarian empire. Like Germany, Hungary suffered economic collapse and inflation followed by fascist dictatorships, only ended by brutal Nazi occupation. Post-war optimism ended when the Iron Curtain came down: the lies of Soviet Communism were most clearly revealed by the tanks rolling into Budapest in 1956 to put down the uprising. In 1989 the Berlin Wall fell; since then, a patchy story of economic growth and democracy – though the future looks uncertain. It is an extraordinary story, told with aplomb, verve and wit, by the only man who could have written it.
Norman Stone is one of Britain’s greatest historians. He was until recently professor of European history at Bilkent University, having been professor of modern history at Oxford. His works include The Eastern Front, 1914–1917 (winner of the Wolfson Prize), Europe Transformed and The Atlantic and Its Enemies.

Gaston Dorren delves deep into the linguistic oddities and extraordinary stories of these global tongues, tracing their origins and sometimes bloody rise to greatness. He explains their grammars, which order their speakers’ worldview but often appear bafflingly complex to outsiders. Learn why Russian has no word for blue, how Turkish stopped borrowing words, and why Arabic is possibly the hardest global language to learn. Consider the difficulties of having four forms for ‘I’ as in Vietnamese, and the questions that arise from the way Tamil pronouns keep humans and deities apart. The Invisible Emperor Napoleon on Elba An intimate encounter with one of the most influential people ever to live Few historical figures are as well known as Napoleon Bonaparte, and yet the Emperor’s ten-month exile on the small island of Elba is virtually unexplored. Now, for the first time, we have a window into this critical moment when the most powerful man on Earth turns defeat into one final challenge. A close character study mixed with a world-shaking drama, The Invisible Emperor shows Napoleon as he’s never before been seen: heart-broken husband, civil engineer, interior decorator, gardener and spy master. It shows a man at his nadir rise up against the global odds to build a miniature island empire, turn his two greatest foes into his closest confidantes, and return to France without firing a single shot.

Trust Me, I’m Lying Confessions of a Media Manipulator The book that predicted fake news, revised and updated Recently, fake news has become real news, making headlines as its consequences become obvious in political upsets and global turmoil. But it’s not new - you’ve seen it all before. A malicious online rumour costs companies millions. Politically motivated ‘fake news’ stories are planted and disseminated to influence elections. Anonymous sources become national conversation. What you don’t know is that someone is responsible for all this. Usually, someone like Ryan Holiday: a media manipulator. Holiday wrote this book to explain how media manipulators work, how to spot their fingerprints, how to fight them, and how (if you must) to emulate their tactics. Why is he giving away these secrets? Because he’s tired of a world where trolls hijack debates, marketers help write the news, reckless journalists spread lies, and no one is accountable for any of it. He’s pulling back the curtain because it’s time everyone understood how these things really work.

Conspiracy Peter Thiel, Hulk Hogan, Gawker, and the Anatomy of Intrigue Behind the scenes of the case that rocked the media world In 2007, a short blog post on a site owned by Gawker Media, outed the enigmatic Facebook and PayPal billionaire Peter Thiel as gay. In 2016, Gawker was forced to declare bankruptcy after a $140 million dollar judgment in a Florida court over an illegally recorded sex tape of Hulk Hogan with his best friend’s wife. These two seemingly unrelated events were in fact the bookends of a nearly decade-long plot masterminded by Thiel. It had been one of the most covered and surreal legal cases in history and no one had suspected a thing. This conspiracy and its result raised farreaching questions – what would it mean for free speech? For privacy? For culture? In Holiday’s masterful telling of this conspiracy, this case transcends the narrative of how one billionaire took down a media empire. It’s a study in power, strategy, and one of the most ambitious – and successful – plots in recent memory.

The Bell of Treason The Czech Story of the 1938 Munich Agreement The prelude to World War II presented in a new light On returning from Germany on 30 September 1938 after his agreement with Hitler on Czechoslovakia, Neville Chamberlain spoke to the crowds at 10 Downing Street: ‘My good friends ... I believe it is peace for our time. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Go home and get a nice quiet sleep.’ Winston Churchill commented dryly: ‘We have chosen shame and will get war.’ P. E. Caquet’s history of the events leading to the Munich Agreement and its aftermath is told for the first time from the point of view of the peoples of Czechoslovakia and the many Germans and others (including Thomas Mann) who had taken refuge there from the Nazis. Basing his account on sources including the press, memoirs, private journals, military plans, parliamentary records, film and radio, Caquet presents one of the most shameful episodes in modern European history in a tragic new shape.

Lying for Money How Fraud Makes the World Go Round Financial fraud made simple Financial crime seems horribly complicated, but there are only so many ways in which you can con someone out of what’s theirs. In fact, there are four. A veteran regulatory economist and market analyst, Dan Davies has years of experience picking the bones out of some of the most famous frauds of the modern age. Now he reveals the big picture that emerges from their labyrinths of deceit. Along the way you’ll find out how to fake a gold mine with a wedding ring, a file and a shotgun. You’ll see how close Charles Ponzi, the king of pyramid schemes, came to acquiring his own private navy. You’ll learn how fraud has shaped the entire development of the modern world economy. And you’ll learn whether you have what it takes to be a white-collar criminal mastermind, if that’s what you want to be. (Which you don’t. You really, really don’t.)
Dan Davies is a former regulatory economist at the Bank of England. His career has seen him tackle the LIBOR and FX scandals, the collapse of the Anglo Irish Bank and the Swiss Nazi gold scandal. He has written for the Financial Times and the New Yorker among other publications.

The Language Tamers On the Wild Side of Speech How language outsmarts its masters, by the Economist’s language columnist Language is an astonishing capacity: the crown jewel in our mental and social arsenal. But for all that, one can’t help noticing that it’s sometimes a bit ... rubbish. It’s confusing and ambiguous. Words, as Eliot wrote, ‘slip, slide, perish / Decay with imprecision.’ And some of them are foul to start with. No wonder people throughout history have had the idea of making improvements. Join the Economist’s language columnist Lane Greene to meet the people who have sought to bring language closer to their own ideals. Can a language exist that is clear, logical and unambiguous? How about one in which no bad words exist? Could class distinctions be made good? Could you preserve a language at its zenith of greatness so that no corruptions ever creep in? Could we all speak the same? The answer in each case reveals another facet of the wild beast that is human speech and thought.

Seriously Curious The Facts And Figures That Turn Our World Upside Down Following up 2016’s hit Go Figure, another collection of astonishing bite-sized explainers from the Economist Some questions you never think to ask. Others, you didn’t know you didn’t know. And some facts are so surprising they cry out for answers. What can a president actually do? Why do cities sink into the ground? Why is Australia seemingly invulnerable to recessions? Why do people in couples do more housework than singletons? The brilliant minds of the Economist collect these questions. Individually, they might seem bite-sized and inconsequential, but taken together they can reveal a whole new world.
Tom Standage is deputy editor of the Economist. He is author of several books, including Go Figure, Writing on the Wall: Social Media - The First 2,000 Years and The Victorian Internet. His writing has appeared in The New York Times, Daily Telegraph, Guardian and Wired.

The Age of Surveillance Capitalism The Fight for a Human Future at the New Frontier of Power An important book about technology and capitalism Society is at a turning point. The optimism that accompanied the advent of the internet has been replaced with unease, as technology, capitalism and an unequal society create the perfect storm. Tech companies are gathering our information and selling it to the highest bidder. How will this fusion of capitalism and the digital shape our future? We have the power to decide what kind of world we want to live in. We can choose to allow the power of technology to enrich the few or harness it for the wider distribution of capitalism’s social and economic benefits. Exploring the social, political, business and technological meaning of the changes taking place in our time, The Age of Surveillance Capitalism tackles the threat of an unprecedented power free from democratic oversight and shows how we can protect ourselves. The stark issue at hand is whether we will be masters of the digital, or its slaves.

The Lies That Bind Rethinking Identity A radical new theory of identity from a master in the subject We often think that identity is personal. But the identities that shape the world, our struggles and our hopes, are social ones, shared with countless others. Our sense of self is shaped by family, but also nationality, culture, class, race and religion. Professor Appiah uses these categories to challenge our assumptions about how identity works. Weaving personal anecdote with historical, cultural and literary example, he explores the entanglements within the stories we tell ourselves. We all know there are conflicts among identities, but identities are also created by conflict. Religion, Professor Appiah shows us, isn’t primarily about beliefs. National self-determination is incoherent. Our everyday racial thinking is an artefact of discarded science. Class is not a matter of upper and lower. And the very idea of western culture is a misleading myth. We will see our situation more clearly when we start to question these mistaken identities.
Kwame Anthony Appiah is Professor of Philosophy and Law at New York University and was President of the PEN American Center. He is author of works including In My Father’s House, The Honor Code and Cosmopolitanism, and is chair of the judges for the 2018 Man Booker Prize.

DIARMAID FERRITER
On the Edge Ireland’s off-shore islands: a modern history The first honest account of life on the islands The islands off the coast of Ireland have long been a source of fascination. Seen as repositories of an ancient Irish culture and the epitome of Irish romanticism, they have attracted generations of scholars, artists and filmmakers looking for a way of life uncontaminated by modernity or materialism. But the reality for islanders has been more complex. They have faced poverty, hardship and hostility while being expected to preserve an ancient way of life. By documenting island experiences and the reaction to them over the last 100 years, On the Edge examines the gulf between the rhetoric that elevated island life and political hostility, towards them. It uncovers the realities shown behind the ‘dreadful rocks’, and the experiences of, and reactions to those who remain, literally, on the edge of European civilisation. Diarmaid Ferriter is one of Ireland’s best-known historians and professor of modern Irish history at UCD. He is a broadcaster on television and radio and a weekly columnist with the Irish Times. In 2010 he presented a three-part history of twentieth-century Ireland, The Limits of Liberty, on RTE television. £30 464pp Royal hardback ISBN: 978 1 78125 643 5 eISBN: 978 1 78283 252 2 History October 2018 World US 30
