Throughout the centuries human beings have greatly developed their capacity to use Nature for their own benefit in order to achieve a more comfortable, pleasant life. But at the same time their activity is becoming more and more of a risk for nature, which so generously guarantees their survival. It is no longer questionable that climatic change is clear proof that this risk is near. Design is one of the exponents of humans’ transforming and creative capacities, and it also represents a first class cultural and economic value. Creative factors contribute to boost economic life and may play an essential role in the improvement and protection of the environment. But design and creative capacity may become a horse running on behalf of irresponsible consumption and industries or, on the contrary, may be of invaluable help to contribute towards human activities more in line with preserving life on Earth as we have known it up to now.
III. To make society at large and productive sectors in particular aware of the importance of conceiving design as a welfare and wealth trigger and as carrier of cultural values and a utility. IV. To turn Madrid into a benchmark for sustainable design. To place the Central de Diseùo and Matadero Madrid at the centre of the design values included in the three previous goals. These objectives have managed to bring together such different entities as the Madrid Designers’ Association (DIMAD), the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE) of the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade, the Association Sustainability and Architecture (ASA), the Foundation Arte y Derecho (Art and Law) and the European Social Fund through the Business School EOI, Escuela de Negocios. All the above institutions contribute with their means, ideas and human resources to select and acknowledge every year the best projects that:
From the beginnings of design as a project discipline, the concern for the effects of industrial activities on our environment has been constant among many designers. From Breuer’s writings in the Bauhaus in 1927 on a rational use of green materials, or Buckminster’s Dymaxion as a paradigm for sustainable materials. To the increasingly common concern of young architects and designers in search of new more sustainable materials to reduce the environmental impact of their designs.

The time has come to move from good ideas to good deeds. Looking for the best examples and practices to spread them among society, companies, universities, institutions and the professional designers themselves. In order to turn what today is an exceptional practice into an essential requirement to promote, request or carry out design.

To put design at the service of people and at the service of society is one of Dimad’s power ideas since its origins and it has also been one of the reasons for the establishment of this European Environmental Design Award, promoted by outstanding public figures and institutions in the fields of architecture, design, training and the environment. An award that has been born with four basic goals: I. To value and foster actions carried out in Europe by companies, institutions or designers which are particularly outstanding examples of good design from an environmental viewpoint. II. To raise awareness among companies, public institutions, designers and society of the importance of allocating sustainability values to their designs and products.

All the actions are precisely covered within the five categories of this Award: Building, Industrial Design, Graphic Design, Communication Campaigns and Initiatives. In this first edition, 146 projects from all over Europe have taken part in the above categories. This can be considered a reasonable success, taking into account the number and quality of the projects registered. BEST_ED_1_EUROPEAN ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN AWARD_PREMIO EUROPEO DE DISEÑO Y MEDIO AMBIENTE
For the last few years IDAE has upheld the strategy of managing to have energy efficiency unavoidably integrated with design as a further attribute, added to the defining ones relating to aesthetics, functionality or the senses. Behind every design product there lies a reflection and a need to meet. Exactly the same lies behind efficiency, and probably the same renewed way of looking at the world, i.e., life. Energy is a scarce, precious resource, and wasting it goes against common sense, intelligence, aesthetics and, I would even say, ethics. We must turn the energy efficiency motto –i.e., get more with less- into a paradigm of our way of life, and a question, as I said before, of common sense, intelligence and opportunity to carry on progressing, achieve a better quality of life and build up a common future for everybody. Thus, the concept of ECODESIGN comes in, in all its power; i.e., the optimisation and design of products, both regarding efficiency in energy consumption when it refers to products requiring power to work, and life cycle. If the concept of design is new, so is that of energy efficiency. Energy efficiency policies and the promotion of renewable sources of energy enjoy today –both internationally and certainly in Spain- a strategic value which was unthinkable only three decades ago; environmental concern seemed then to affect only those considered naïve who had started to theorise on the need to strike a balance between economic growth, energy consumption and respect for Nature. I would like to point out here that, in any case, it is no longer a question of willingness or awareness. Everything related to ecological design requirements applicable to products that use power has been laid down in Royal Decree 1369/2007, transposing in Spain the European Directive on Ecodesign (DirecÌ ÛiÊÓääxÉÎÓÉ ®]Ê >ÌiÀÊ> i `i`ÊLÞÊ ÀiVÌ ÛiÊÓäänÉÓnÉ ° These two directives have recently been recast into Directive 2009/125/EC [1], establishing ecodesign requirements for energy-related products; not just those for consumption as it was up to now. Later on, Regulation (EC) 66/2010 [2] ensures coordination between the design of these products and their ecological label of the European Union. The aim is to create a single framework for the ecological design of products related to energy that ensures efficiency and coherence, with a common approach for the whole EU. Besides laying down the minimum requirements to market the products, their environmental benchmarks are established regarding the most ecological products on the market. Under the existing Directive on ecological design, this is already feasible for products relating to energy, which may enjoy public employment and/or tender and tax benefits. The current publication presents the European Environmental Design Awards, envisaging them as a cultural value affecting the economy. In times of crisis we
need to build creative factors into production in order to increase productivity. All this, directly addressing the severe environmental challenges while at the same time maintaining our welfare standards. The search for practical solutions that turn our life habits and our productive ways into more efficient, environmentally-friendly patterns is a social and economic need. And if we do find them, we must disseminate them as much as possible to serve as models; this is the main aim of the awards. One of the essential goals of IDEA is to carry out awareness-raising actions targeting all sectors, thus contributing to building up a new energy culture based on sustainability. We want to shake both the consumers’ and the manufacturers’ consciences, move them so that energy is appropriately dealt with, giving it priority in those aspects in which it is present in our lives, which are almost all of them. For this reason, and because design, creativity and art are means, like no other, to shake consciences through reflection and emotion, we are proud to take part in this initiative which rewards ECODESIGN. Finally, I would particularly like to stress the need to incorporate design into so-called sustainable building. That is, the significant role architectural and space design may play in this process of the search for new solutions to achieve sustainable, bioclimatic buildings. At IDAE, we think it is essential to foster measures that act on energy consumption in buildings, that help to achieve energy sustainability. Buildings are constant energy consumers, right from the moment they are built, during their life cycle until they are demolished, in very significant amounts, while producing at the same time polluting emissions. Just as a point of information, the building sector in Spain –per use and exploitationrepresents around 20% of end-user energy consumption. This energy consumption and the environmental impact related to it can and must be dramatically reduced, through a series of measures connected on the one hand with urban town planning and on the other, through the articulation of a series of strategies that contribute to considering energy as a starting point criterion when designing projects. If everything in project is still made following conventional views, the city of tomorrow will still have to face the challenge of preserving quality of life and being committed to our future. However, it is possible nowadays to plan and design introducing in the processes and projects, concepts and criteria that allow for a more rational use of energy and for urban environments more in line with sustainable development. It is also possible, and I would say essential nowadays, to think that energy may become an essential part of project design criteria and of their conditioning considerations, gearing the dynamics of land use towards sustainability and a better use of resources. Enrique Jiménez Larrea Chairman of IDAE February 2009 [1] DIRECTIVE 2009/125/EC OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AND COUNCIL, of 21 October 2009, establishing a framework for the setting of ecodesign requirements for energy-related products. Recast of Directive 2005/32/EC and Directive 2008/28/EC, which amended and expanded its scope to allow the Community ecodesign requirements to include energy-related products, not just those using energy. [2] Regulation (EC) 66/2010, of 25 November 2009, on the EU ecolabel, which ensures coordination between the EU ecolabel system and the establishment of requirements within the scope of Directive 2009/125/EC.

Rau transformed a former 1950’s agricultural laboratory into the first CO2 neutral and (almost entirely) energy autonomous office in the Netherlands. By breaking through the rigidity of the existing structure and adding an organic blob at the centre, the rejuvenated building got a friendly appearance that blends in with the surrounding nature reserve. Rau’s intervention did not only give the building a new face, but fundamentally changed the user experience. Natural ventilation and the use of natural materials offer a balanced and healthy indoor environment.

EUROPEAN ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN AWARD SUSTAINABLE BUILDING MERIT Holland is a country in which the design of urban areas for children’s games has a long tradition linked to both social and plastic art experimentation. So the 2012Architecten proposal to use for one of them recycled pieces from windpower generators comes as no surprise. The outcome is both novel and stimulating. A path that is beginning to be used and that is offered here as an example of great formal and creative value.

The desire to reproduce the space of a forest, or of a group of bamboos on a layer of water, has formed the subconscious basis of the project. On the one hand there is the creation of a mechanism able to generate extraordinary possibilities from the point of view of energy logic and environmental awareness, an essential and symbolic aspect for the Spanish Pavilion. On the other hand, one of the most attractive spaces one may encounter is transferred to the field of architecture. Changing spaces, full of hints and nuances, in which concepts such as verticality and depth play an essential role.
EUROPEAN ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN AWARD SUSTAINABLE BUILDING MERIT Spain’s Pavilion at the Zaragoza World Expo 2008 is one of the buildings that has received most awards in the last few years. Nevertheless, we did not wish to fail to highlight here how its formal values have come to the service of ideas of sustainability and respect for the environment. An example to follow and one that opens up paths to dispel the misconception that plastic art and environmental creativity cannot go hand in hand along the same path.

W+W (WASHBASIN + WATER CLOSET) / 2009 AUTHOR / COMPANY
ROCA INNOVATION LAB (CONCEPT) AND BURATTI + BATTISTON ARCHITECTS (DESIGN) / ROCA SANITARIO S.A.
W+W combines functionality and water-saving benefits fusing Washbasin and WC. The project W+W intends to fuse both appliances. Through the new Roca “water-reuse” technology, washbasin waste water fills the toilet cistern, reducing water usage by up to 25% compared with the standard toilet. An automatic cleaning system avoids bad smells and flushing bacteria into the cistern. W+W is the choice when sustainability and good design are top priorities.
EUROPEAN ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN AWARD INDUSTRIAL DESIGN MERIT An interesting product joining excellent execution quality and a smart solution to re-use washbasin water in the toilet cistern. Roca has managed to tune in with the increasing environmental awareness of Northern European markets by providing a very interesting solution, which, no doubt, will influence future conceptualisations for this type of product.

The book Écodesign, Chemins Vertueux draws up a panorama of packaging’s ecological footprint. It explores the axes of progress inherent to this issue and offers innovative solutions in packaging ecoconception. Conceiving packaging that pollutes less all along its life cycle, helps consumers get rid of it in a better way and limits their environmental impact, including during recycling, this is the new global challenge.
EUROPEAN ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN AWARD PUBLISHING MERIT Écodesign, Chemins Vertueux is a great book, both in design and content. Its design includes many excellent photos, and its content, related to waste and packaging, their history, recycling, ecological impact, resources, energy, air and water, materials, etc. is also an analysis of responsible attitudes to the environment and packaging.

How much of a letter can be removed while maintaining readability? After long hours of research and work, the author managed to get a font that uses up to 20% less ink. To do so, extensive tests were carried out, which showed that the best results were achieved using small circles. The type selected had to be based on a widely used type face. Therefore the Vera Sans was chosen –a Verdana look-a-like under GNU license– as the basis of the Ecofont. A communication website around it was set up which offered the Ecofont “Free to download, free to use”. Within two months after launch, the font was downloaded over 700,000 times!
EUROPEAN ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN AWARD GRAPHIC DESIGN CAMPAIGNS OUTSTANDING Ecofont is, first of all, a robust graphic proposal. A type face that keeps its careful, legible stroke in small bodies and large formats. With this award to Ecofont, we are rewarding an idea’s efficiency. An idea that shows how some simple actions may translate into significant savings in our daily habits, a more sound use of raw materials and more rational consumption of manufactured products.

60Bags are biodegradable carrier bags that are manufactured using the natural flax based non-woven fabric. The fabric is produced with flax fibre industrial waste so as not to exploit natural resources. Once a bag is discarded it decomposes naturally within just 60 days. This means 60Bag can be used and stored as long as desired and then thrown away without polluting the environment. 60Bag.com is the natural answer to the environmental needs of today.

Inspired by the process of regeneration and new life, the authors wanted to give the Ecopod coffin a unique shape and make it from biodegradable materials. By finishing it in brightly coloured papers, the Ecopod helps to move funerals away from their more sombre tradition, towards a more inspiring celebration of the life that has passed. Made by hand from recycled newspapers and hand finished with paper made from mulberry pulp, the Ecopod is available in a range of colours with screenprinted motifs, plain white, or gold.

Cinema-Book was designed with the aim of increasing people’s awareness to take part in a humanitarian project of cultural exchange with Spanish-speaking countries. The book shows a photographic sequence in which, making use of a visual metaphor, the act of distributing culture can be seen.
Crossway is a sustainable home nestled quietly within the English countryside, flooded with daylight beneath a soaring terracotta Timbrel vault handmade from clay dug within 6 km of the site. The vault is exposed throughout the house, soaring as though somehow defying gravity. The layout is simple, spacious and airy. Every room has a unique joy. The sun is harnessed to provide all energy needs.

Everything seems to be perishable in the society we live in today. Everything quickly becomes obsolete, whether or not it is still useful”. With this in mind the Spanish Red Cross and “Entreculturas” have launched the Donate your Mobile campaign, a social action aimed at mobile phone users with a double purpose: using the income generated for re-using mobiles for humanitarian and education actions in the least favoured countries, and helping protect the environment by collecting mobiles no longer in use. The Brussels based collective Rotor defines itself as a platform for the endorsement of industrial waste re-use. Deutschland im Herbst was both an exhibition (at the Ursula Blickle Stiftung in Kraichtal, Germany), and a publication. The aim of the project was to reflect upon the very moment an industrial waste-product comes into being. The catalogue provides text and image to such origination processes, through a series of eleven specific study-cases. The photograph, by Ccil Michel and François De Herdt shows the “Drooling of white foamed polyurethane from a boots factory”.
JAN KORBES AND MARCO BROEDERS
Shoestore Duchi has been built out of surplus materials. The central element is a shoe fitting island, made from surplus wood. Two ergonomic couches have been made with a footrest at working height for the employees. The back of the couch functions as a support for customers trying out new shoes, which they can do by walking on the conveyor belt from a supermarket. The circular shelves around the seating island give shape to the fitting area. This way the shop stays one entity, spatially and functionally.

Dvelas designs and manufactures contemporary furnishings reutilising old used sails. The spontaneous idea of converting used sails into useful objects, acquires a bigger complexity when it evolves into an ethical initiative based on four fundamental strategic lines: Econversion (simple transformation processes that insist on the material’s smooth quality), Excellence (unique products with a precise identification of their history and origins), Responsibility (an active and voluntary contribution to the improvement of the social, working and ecological i Û À i ÌîÊ> `Ê*À Ì Ê vÊÌ iÊiV }Þ]ÊÃ> }Ê> `Ê`ià } ®°

Ecohostel originates from the need for budget accommodation in a city with growing sustainability awareness. Adaptive reuse of an old barge combined with ecological techniques provides the guests the opportunity to travel with a lower ecological footprint, without compromising comfort.
The Designpack Gallery is a space dedicated to the art of packaging design. This exhibition draws up a panorama of packaging’s ecological footprint and presents innovative solutions in ecoconception. A type of packaging that pollutes less all along its life cycle helps consumers get rid of it in a better way. That is the new global challenge. Along with the exhibition, a conference was held around the same topic.

This pergola creates shade and shelter and a floating vegetable garden to be used in areas where it is impossible to plant trees. This creates a balanced equilibrium between industrial design and a high level of natural sustainability. The Ecopergola has capacity to cover 25 m2 surface area per unit and is supported by one mast. Its self-irrigation system saves and reduces water consumption and needs limited maintenance. Made with a diversity of materials and fabrication methods.
Embell System is specially-designed to increase cleaning quality with its unmatched clean water supply system. Its internal design is entirely mechanical, so it requires no maintenance and no external power source. To use it, the tank must be filled with water so that every time the mop is used, it is done in fresh, clean water, with no refilling requirements. The system automatically supplies itself with clean water, making mopping more effective, as well as avoiding the accumulation of residual filth on the floor. It reduces the number of refills, thus reducing the amount of water, time and cleaning products needed to mop.

Ecoproyecta is a sustainable architecture company and its corporate identity had to transmit its work philosophy and foundation values. The self-promotional element represents one of this company’s aspirations: to reduce CO2 emissions with its activity, a decisive factor in climate change. This element is a cardboard mini-box, which contains a pot and oregano, mint or basil seeds of the Laminaceae family, one of the most important Mediterranean species –from the ethnobotanical and economic point of view. Furthermore, the box is designed to be reused as a pencil case.
Emotionally Durable Design is a call to arms for professionals, students and academic creatives. The publication proposes the emergence of a new genre of sustainable design that reduces consumption and waste by increasing the durability of relationships established between users and products. In this provocative text, Jonathan Chapman pioneers a radical design about-face to reduce the impact of modern consumption without compromising commercial viability or creative edge.

A sustainable design would be a design that not only doesn’t generate any but also diminishes existing waste. A design that, at a glance, shows its intention and invites people to change their habits. An excellent sustainable design would be one in which the only energy that is consumed is the creative type. The Headboard Pallet points to that direction. Its aim is sustainability and functionality, without giving up aesthetic values. The pallet adapts perfectly to its new function only by changing its context. INDUSTRIAL DESIGN

The quality of Spanish architecture is valued throughout the world. However, the degree of sustainability of the buildings is still poor. This is why it is worth getting acquainted with some examples by those who are starting their way towards managing building resources which are friendlier with the environment: bioclimatic buildings, changes or improvements in the industry, ecological constructions and restoration among others. This publication is a reference for sustainable architecture in which thirty-two architects express their concerns and show us forty buildings where solutions that will soon be widely used are applied.

In Mediterranean peri-urban littoral, the pollution of maritime aerosol affects the survival and the growth of pines and other plants. In this situation, creating an extension forest like the existing one is not viable. The coastal pine groves of “piñonero” (pine-nut) pine have both great landscape and ecological value, and are habitats worth preserving for their broader public interest. Since it is not possible to replant a pine grove as the existing one, the proposal here is to generate an artificial shade by means of a pergola that is reminiscent of the semidarkness of the pine grove.
In this book Janis Birkeland presents the innovative new paradigm in which the built environment provides greater life quality, health, amenity and safety for all, without sacrificing resources or money. With a different form of design, development itself can become a “sustainability solution”. A cornerstone of this new paradigm is the ecoretrofitting of the vast urban fabric we already inhabit. The author presents a revolutionary new tool called SmartMode to achieve this end. PUBLISHING

The Penman is a penholder made from a used vinyl record. It is moulded by the four hands of the designers and Each piece has a unique shape. It is a very stable object and can hold a considerable amount of pencils and other stationary items.
The posters here presented are made of cut-out pieces of paper. The work is iV } V> Ê >ÃÊ Ì iÊ >ÌiÀ > ÃÊ ÕÃi`Ê >ÀiÊ ÕÌ âi`Ê ÛiÀÞÊ iV V> Þ°Ê ÕÌÊ « iViÃÊ vÊ paper which remain after making a poster are stored and used in further works. The pieces that are too small to use are recycled. Ecology should be like nature, full of forms and colours. This is the reason why loud colours are chosen for the ecoposters. The topics the author is most interested in, in relation to natural environment are concerned with the problems of animals –both domestic and wild– and the uneven fight between man and the animal world.

The tile range Roca’s Pret a Porter porcelain is an innovative and sustainable system whose most notable feature is that it can be laid 100% dry and instantly, without the need for cement or pointing. This highly versatile system, exclusive to Roca, is very clean, generates no waste or rubble at all and allows for complete removal for subsequent reuse. Moreover, the pieces are easy to replace and can be used from the moment of laying. Roca places itself in the forefront of the permanent search for solutions that combine quality, design and sustainable development. INDUSTRIAL DESIGN

Garbage architecture provides a second life for found or thrown-away objects and operates on the borders of architecture, art and design, creating new products from old materials. Origin for designs is found in the object itself, by listening to its own composition, history, or local and social context. The authors do not start from a design, they need a problem to play with, 3D troubleshooting, and creative improvisation with whatever is locally available. Waste materials lead the way to often unpredictable results. Wherever there is garbage, this work team can do research and workshops on creative recycling. They have an infinite life cycle and strictly comply with all recognised sustainable indicators.
The project concept “Relaja” was developed in the Canary Islands to improve the local situation. The waste treatment of stone slabs from a construction company was the starting point. This waste was recovered through the design of a modular outdoor bench due to the local demand for non-imported public furniture. Furthermore, the simple production of Relaja might support the integration of people at risk of social exclusion, giving a solution to a diagnosed problem in the Local Agenda 21. Thus, this product is a transposable example of how design can help the local economy, ecology and society.

The Recycloop temporarily unites two waste flows, sinks and water, in a shiny structure. Sinks from demolished buildings are the walls of multifunctional space. The sinks can appear in different shapes and are easy to mount and dismount due to a skilful fastening system. When the sun shines Recycloop reflects light like a disco ball. On the inside, the sun shines through the holes, but when it rains the sinks give shelter. Rainwater is collected through the gray water circuit.

This book came about from a solidarity expedition to Mauritania, arranged to reuse medical material from different hospitals. The creative proposal was to portray the current situation of Mauritania in parallel to the expedition itself. The result was a book to raise awareness and serve as a documentary reference for the purpose of the route, which later on would be used to raise economic funds for the NGO Amami, located in one of the poorest areas of Nouakchott, capital city of Mauritania.

This raincoat is made entirely using bioplastic derived from potato starch and other natural resources, resulting in a 100% biodegradable and compostable product. This implies that at the end of its life cycle it returns entirely to the biosphere, transformed into organic matter and thus, closing the loop. To reinforce this concept, every raincoat contains a small clay ball with seeds in it. As such, the users know that they have to plant the raincoat when it becomes useless. This way it won’t only return to a natural cycle, but will also help to cultivate the seeds inside.

To advance the subject of design one has to engage in the activity of designing. This book offers an innovative, design-centred approach that explores both the meaning and practice of sustainable design. The author explores the design process in the context of sustainability, and challenges conventional ways of defining, designing and producing functional objects. He discusses the personal design process, tacit knowledge, ephemeral design, experimental design, and the relationship between intellectual design criteria, physical expression and aesthetic experience. Superuse is a practical and inspiring book about constructing new buildings with surplus materials. It presents ideas for tools and methods for architects such as the harvest map. The book is illustrated with 15 clearly and concisely presented examples from 2012Architecten in the Netherlands and elsewhere. It also considers the subject from the ecological and methodological points of view. Superuse.org is the accompanying online community about reuse and design.
This book brings together for the first time information about lifecycle sustainability impacts of fashion and textiles, practical alternatives, design concepts and social innovation. It challenges existing ideas about the scope and potential of sustainability issues in fashion and textiles, and sets out a more pluralistic, engaging and forward-looking picture, drawing on ideas of systems thinking, human needs, local products, slow fashion and participatory design, as well as knowledge of materials. The project Table Board derives out of the interest in using and recycling timber. Knots, cracks, stains, defects of wood that make them not usable, represent the main objective of the project. Traditional methods of craftsmanship are used when carving each piece to apply the finishes. The methods and techniques used such as gilding, engraving or tempera over gilding, intend to recover the tradition of Arts and Crafts.
In Dura warehouse, pre-cut wood sheets which have not passed the quality parameters are stacked. After assessing the material and mixing the different layers, the edge shows a new product: balanced and symmetrical boards for wood flooring. The 100 pallets stored and rejected can now produce over 25,000 m2 of wood flooring of various models. The wood so far kept in factories, may finally have a new use. INDUSTRIAL DESIGN

How much trash do humans throw away every day? Is trash really all we throw away? What if we could extend the life cycle of the objects we use in our dairy life? With Trash? the authors want people to think about the life of the objects, telling them that this cycle could be longer in a society that generates more and more garbage everyday. Trash? is a garbage bag that can be used as a puff. It can be used indoors or outdoors, just fill it up with garbage and enjoy the seat. Buy, enjoy, throw away and buy again seems to be all that modern society does. With Trash? one buys, enjoys, enjoys again and, to end the cycle, recycles the bag.
