absolute news AHA’s fight back AHA’s have been used in skincare since the 1980’s and industry experts are standing by the popular ingredient that has countless clinical evidence to support the beneficial effects it has on the skin. As UK skin specialist, Dr
The Fat Fighting Jab A new anti-obesity jab has been hailed by researchers as being almost twice as effective as current fat loss pills in the battle of the bulge. The new anti-fat jab, called liraglutide, can reportedly help overweight people to lose a stone in 5 months. The drug also cut blood pressure and improved glucose control in those with prediabetes – a condition which can lead to full-blown diabetes. Liraglutide, also known by its brand name Victoza, has been licensed for use on obese patients by prescription in Britain since July. For the latest study, 564 patients were either given daily doses of liraglutide, a ‘dummy’ jab administered once a day, or orlistat pills – another fat-loss treatment. All the volunteers, who were clinically obese or severely obese, also followed a calorie-restricted diet and increased their physical activity. However, it was the group given liraglutide who lost significantly more weight than those on the placebo and orlistat. Almost 75% lost more than 5 per cent of their body weight on liraglutide, compared with 30% on the placebo and 44% of those taking orlistat. At the start of the study, carried out by Professor Arne Astrup and colleagues from the University of Copenhagen, around a third of patients in each group had prediabetes but using the drug cut this condition by at least 84 per cent. Amy Lindsay
Patrick Bowler comments; “AHA’s have been used in skincare since the late 80’s and there is a robust body of clinical studies to show their positive effects on the skin. All AHA products should be used in conjunction with an SPF and guidelines on frequency of use given by a professional. If used correctly they will remove only excess dead skin layers that build up as we age, leaving a natural protective layer intact. Studies show that AHAs actually thicken the living areas of the epidermis and increase dermal proteins and Glycosominoglycans so they have a normalising effect on ageing skin rather than changing it to an abnormal state.” Joe Lewis (Joseph A. Lewis II) PRIORI Founder and Chemist & Skincare Formulator comments; “AHAs do not cause cancer, UV rays cause cancer. Proper use of AHAs with sunscreen does not increase the incidence of skin cancer. Any type of exfoliation treatment, laser or microdermabrasion, should always be followed with SPF. The fallacy in the statement that AHAs cause cancer is no different than the following - boats are made of metal, metal does not float, therefore boats do not float! Sunlight causes cancer, not AHAs!” SOURCE: www.cosmeceuticals.co.uk

Thread vein treatment on the rise, due to advances in technology! “Summer is the time when people tend to be more conscious about their bodies, and the time when they are more likely to have their legs on show, and we experienced a huge surge in patients because of that. “We also have employed three of the top vascular surgeons in the country, and so when people do their research about where to have the treatment, they know they are in the safest of hands at The Private Clinic.” One of the vascular consultants at the clinic, Dr Constantinos Kyriakides, says that the recent developments in the industry have undoubtedly contributed to the increase in patient numbers this year; “Previously, the only treatment available for varicose veins was a procedure called ‘Stripping’ which involved an operation under general anaesthetic and a significant amount of downtime. “The new varicose vein procedure is called Endovenous Laser Treatment, or EVLT. It is a minimally invasive method, which is performed under local anaesthetic and is completed in about 45 minutes. This means that patients can return to normal activity almost straight away, and experience far less comfort and disruption, than with more traditional treatment methods” The other procedures available at The Private Clinic for the treatment of veins include Sclerothearpy and the CoolGlide laser. Established in 1983 in Harley Street, The Private Clinic is widely recognised as one of the leading names in the field of cosmetic medicine, treating thousands of patients to successfully tackle a wide range of problems. Choosing the right
Practitioner/Surgeon? Whether it’s “Botox”, “Dermal Fillers”, “Breast Enlargement” or a “Facelift” you are considering it’s highly recommended that you do your homework. We have put together a few pointers to help and ensure you are making the right decision. • Ensure that your practitioner has the correct qualifications for the treatment being carried out. Check that the nurse, doctor or surgeon has been appropriately trained and is a current member of their governing body whether it be NMC/RCN for nurses or GMC for doctors. • Make sure that the practitioner has the correct insurance to cover you and them if in the unlikely event, anything was to go wrong. • Find out how long they have been performing the treatment, and how many they do a day/week/month. • Be wary of any medical professional that doesn’t provide a full consultation and doesn’t offer you a consent form. You should make your practitioner aware of medications you are taking, or any recent surgeries or medical appointments. • Ask to see before and after photos of treatments that the practitioner has performed. • Confirm the price before proceeding with treatment and make sure that the price is in line with what you expect, too expensive and too cheap are to be thought about very carefully.
Choosing the right practitioner is imperative when having a Non-surgical or Surgical procedure.
• Personal recommendation is the best form of advertising, so do listen to advice. But remember what is right for your friends and/or family, may not be right for you.
Do remember the Choice is Ultimately yours. Governing Bodies: www.isaps.org www.baaps.org.uk, www.rcn.org.uk www.gmc-uk.org absolute cosmetics

OK, what do you really know about ‘Botox’, it seems to be the word to describe all non- surgical treatment! ‘Botox’ is a term that most people associate with words like freeze or paralyse, which I’m sure you would agree are scary words to associate with a cosmetic treatment used to improve the way we look! The first thing to point out is ‘Botox’ is a trade name and there are many others you may hear of, Vistabel®, Dysport®, Xeomin®, Azzalure®,Myobloc®, Neurobloc®. Ultimately they all work in similar ways but patients, and practitioners, will still favour one over another. It is important that your practitioner tells you which

one you are having as results may vary slightly. The medical term for what’s now known commonly as Botox is Botulinum Toxin. This is a purified protein; it has been diluted many times so that the part you receive for treatment is not toxic to your body. It is administered in such minute quantities that your body will break it down very easily after it has had its desired effect. Botulinum Toxin Type A (Botox) has been used in the NHS for the last 60yrs, and when doctors started using Botox in the 1990’s they started to understand its effectiveness in patients with overactive muscles and through intensive research found it to be highly effective in the treatment of children with cerebral palsy.
The cosmetic use of Botulinum Toxin was first discovered in 1987 when Dr. Jean Carruthers, a Canadian Ophthalmologist, an eye specialist, noticed that after she used the drug to treat eye muscle spasms, the lines around the eyes (known as crow’s feet) of her patients improved dramatically. When she mentioned this side effect to her husband, Dermatologist Alastair Carruthers, he decided to try it out on his receptionist. And that was how we discovered that the drug now known as Botox can reverse some of the signs of ageing on the face.
How does it work?
Botulinum Toxin works by blocking the chemical (acetylcholine) message that the brain sends the muscle when telling it to contract. As
It is very hard to predict exactly how Botulinum Toxin injections will affect your muscles. You may therefore find that the results are not always what you intended. Very occasionally patients who receive Botulinum Toxin injections in the forehead experience a drooping (ptosis) of the eyelids or eyebrows, although this is temporary and may last a few weeks, it will almost certainly resolve when the effects of the treatment wear
off. Rarely double vision or blurred vision can occur and you should seek medical attention if this happens to you. The risk of side effects following treatment is reduced by going to an experienced practitioner.
One final thought
Remember, you don’t always need to take 10yrs off your appearance; the aim is to look good for your age, and to look as natural as possible.
How much does it cost? Most people can expect to pay around; • £150-£250 for ONE area eg, crow’s feet or fore head or in between the eyes (glabellar) • £200-£350 for TWO areas, which can be any combination of the three main areas for treatment. • £250-£500 for THREE areas. NB Extra areas like jaw line, chin or Neck treatments are at the discretion of the Practitioner/Dr and usually carry an extra charge at around £50-£100 per area. the muscle is in a constant state of contraction, when it is relaxed by the treatment it is lifted achieving tighter, smoother and much softer appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. That process usually takes around 10 days to take full effect. The effects of Botulinum Toxin injections generally last for about three to four months, although the results can last longer with repeated treatments. Botulinum Toxin may be less effective for people aged 60 and over because the muscles under the skin are less firm. There are three main areas for treatment on the face which are in between the eyes (Glabellar), crow’s feet (either side of the eyes) and forehead. Areas such as the lower jaw, chin and neck chords (rhytides) may be treated by more experienced practitioners.
Things to consider following a treatment • After your treatment there may be some redness, swelling or tenderness at the injection site. Bruising can occur around the treated area. This is usually short term and will subside over the next few days. • Avoid wearing make up post treatment for 12 hours. • To avoid infection avoid touching the injection site and don’t massage unless instructed to do so. • Until the initial swelling or redness has resolved, do not use sun beds, sauna, steam rooms and avoid extreme temperatures. • If taking aspirin or similar
medication this could increase the risk of bruising and discoloration to the skin where you were injected. • After your line relaxing treatment please refrain from drinking excessive amounts of alcohol, taking vigorous exercise or leaning the head forward for the first 6 hours after treatment and avoid sleeping on your front for the first 2 nights. • To gain optimum results of your line relaxing treatment exercise the treated area by frowning and rising your eyebrows for a few hours after treatment • Most people are pleasantly surprised at to how painless the treatment is. For most people they compare it to a slight scratch • The fact that 90% of people who try this treatment repeat it is its own recommendation • There are a lot of extremely good practitioners/Dr’s and clinics, just take time to find out which one is right for you. • You must be able to trust the person performing the treatment. If you feel unsure at any time during consultation, don’t be embarrassed to say you may just think about treatment this time. • Always fill out a consent form during a consultation.

absolute spotlight Professor Laurence Kirwan
Under the spotlight is Britain’s own Professor Laurence Kirwan, he trained in aesthetic plastic surgery in the USA. He is now an international pioneering surgeon, practising in London, New York and Connecticut, USA.
“Cosmetic surgery should be a positive experience that will refresh your looks and your mind” says Prof Kirwan
Patient Profile – Meet Jane Clarke from Suffolk Kirwan’s patient who is in her early 60s had suffered for years with back and neck pain because of her heavy “boobs” and had breast surgery to reduced her breasts from size 34FF to 32E, taking 8oz off each. She commented: “I am thrilled to bits with the result - I haven’t looked like this since I was a teenager. Having smaller boobs has also given me an extra three inches of shape above my waistline, so I have an altogether more slender silhouette – which is an unexpected additional asset! “I possibly could have had my surgery on the NHS but there was a long waiting list. I wanted to get on with it - and my husband, who is a retired GP, was wonderfully supportive. He has been, all through.”
Here is how he does it…… Surgical procedure with Professor Laurence Kirwan: His private consulting rooms in London are at: 56 Harley Street, London W1G 9QA Tel : 020 7637 4455 (after 2pm)
Breast reduction using the inferior pedicle procedure – which means that the connection of the nipple to the breast is maintained to preserve sensation in the nipple. Kirwan used his anchor scar technique. This involves a scar around the nipple with a vertical scar from the areola to the crease under the breast, plus a horizontal scar in the crease itself. Cost: £6-8,000 for Prof Kirwan’s fee. Additional costs of about £2,500 for the hospital charges and anaesthetist’s fee. Duration of surgery: almost 4 hours. There was no necessity to have the stitches removed as they absorb by themselves. The patient returned to her normal life within 10 days. She runs a hat hire business, breeds Boxer dogs and has five grandchildren.

absolute truth Anti ageing, let’s start at the beginning. How and why we age... How your skin ages will depend on a variety of factors: your lifestyle, diet, heredity, and other personal habits. Primary factors contributing to wrinkled, spotted skin include normal aging, exposure to the sun (photoaging), and loss of subcutaneous support (fatty tissue between your skin and muscle). Other factors that contribute to aging of the skin include stress, gravity, daily facial movement, obesity, and even sleep position.
Skin Changes That Come With Age: • Skin becomes slack. The loss of the elastic tissue (elastin) in the skin with age causes the skin to hang loosely. • Skin becomes more transparent as we age. This is caused by thinning of the epidermis (surface layer of the skin). • Skin becomes more fragile as we age. This is caused by a flattening of the area where the epidermis and dermis (layer of skin under
the epidermis) come together. • Skin becomes more easily bruised. This is due to thinner blood vessel walls as we age.
Sun and Your Skin Over time, the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) light damages certain fibres in the skin called elastin. The breakdown of elastin fibres causes the skin to sag, stretch, and lose its ability to snap back after stretching. The skin also bruises and tears more easily and takes longer to heal. So while sun damage may not show when you’re young, it will later in life. Nothing can completely undo sun damage, although the skin can sometimes repair itself. So, it’s never too late to begin protecting yourself from sun exposure and skin cancer. You can delay changes associated with aging by staying out of the sun.
Changes Below the Skin • Loss of fat below the skin in the cheeks, temples, chin, nose, and eye area may result in loosening skin, sunken eyes, and a “skeletal” appearance. • Cartilage loss in the nose causes drooping of the nasal tip and accentuation of the bony structures in the nose.
Other Skin Changes Gravity, facial movement, and sleep position are the secondary factors that contribute to changes in the skin. When the skin loses its elasticity, gravity causes drooping of the eyebrows and eyelids, looseness and fullness under the cheeks and jaw (jowls and “double chin”), and longer ear lobes. Facial movement lines become more visible after the skin starts losing its elasticity (usually as people reach their 30s and 40s).
e t u l s o c i t ! u e o abs y m d s n a co
Lines may appear horizontally on the forehead, vertically on the skin above the root of the nose (glabella), or as small curved lines on the temples, upper cheeks, and around the mouth. Sleep creases result from the way the head is positioned on the pillow and may become more visible after the skin starts losing its elasticity. Sleep creases are commonly located on the side of the forehead, starting above the eyebrows to the hairline near the temples, as well as on the middle of the cheeks. Changing sleep position may improve these sleep creases or prevent them from becoming worse. Smokers, tend to have more wrinkles than nonsmokers of the same age, complexion, and history of sun exposure. WebMD Medical

Q&A What does the treatment involve?
The Restylane gel is injected in tiny quantities using a fine needle. It can be used on the face, décolletage, neck, lips and hands to diminish the look of lines, add fullness and give a gentle lift to brows. The procedure takes about 20 minutes.
Will the injections be very painful?
Some people may feel discomfort. A local anaesthetic cream is often used when treating facial lines, and integrated pain relief is now also available to provide a quicker and altogether more comfortable experience during treatment.
Is it safe?
the IDEAL YOU? Looking good for your age is now possible thanks to Restylane®, the world’s first dermal filler and leading brand in non-surgical facial aesthetics. Used in over 10 million treatments worldwide, it helps to alleviate the signs of ageing and improve skin texture, lending to a fresher appearance. Although a healthy lifestyle and diet are big factors as we age, they alone cannot tackle the loss of volume that causes lines and wrinkles, which is where Restylane can help to refresh and revitalize your looks immediately.
www.idealyou.co.uk
How does it work?
Restylane replaces the HA that your skin has lost over time. Its injected directly where it is needed under the skin, restoring lost volume for a fresher and firmer complexion.
How long does it last?
Results are instant and long-lasting. Followup treatments will usually be needed after around six to nine months.
Before Restylane
There are a range of products available to suit every treatment need ranging from lip enhancement and cheek or chin augmentation, to skin revitalization and wrinkle control. So, if your creams are no longer working and surgery seems a step too far, Restylane could be the answer you are looking for. For more information and to find a practitioner near to you, please go to www.Restylane.co.uk or call 0800 015 5548
Restylane is very safe and has been used in over 10 million treatments worldwide. Its unique patented hyaluronic acid (HA) gel closely resembles your body’s own supplies, so there’s less risk of allergic reactions.
The BUZZ Words - Hyaluronic Acid After Restylane
A large percentage of our skin is made up from Hyaluronic Acid (HA), a highly absorbent substance that hydrates and creates volume. As we age, our levels of HA decrease, causing fine lines and wrinkles. Luckily, help is at hand with Restylane – a HA gel that is injected directly into the skin to boost its appearance. There are a range of products available to suit every treatment need and subtly minimise creases and revive the complexion.
The
Skin Ageing Process
- photoageing and skin degeneration - role of hyaluronic acid in the skin
1. THE SKIN
AGEING PROCESS The processes by which the skin ages are complex, resulting from a number of different internal (genetic) and external (environmental) factors. Our internal aging is determined by our genetic heritage and there is little which can be done to change the genes handed down to us by our parents. However external aging factors mostly relate to largely environmental influences of which exposure to ultra violet radiation (UVA and UVB radiation from the sun) seems to have the most detrimental effect, resulting in wrinkling, sagging, loss of elasticity and a dehydrated skin appearance.
2. PHOTOAGEING AND SKIN DEGENERATION What is photoageing? Photoageing is the premature ageing of the skin caused by sun damage as a result of repeated exposure to sunlight.
Photoageing and the Skin Degeneration Cycle
The combination of UVA and UVB radiation from the sun breaks down skin’s collagen and elastin. This process alters the distribution of natural hyaluronic The sun’s ultraviolet A (UVA) and acid (HA) in the skin and impairs the water binding ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation that properties of the skin. As a result the skin loses its manage to break through the earth’s ability to hydrate and it loses structural support. This atmospheric ozone layer causes skin loss in structure impairs the flow of nutrients to the skin to age. UVB radiation increases skin cancer. UVA radiation causes premature cells which restricts the skin’s fibroblast activity which produces collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid. This skin ageing by directly breaking down the skin’s supporting structure of elastin reduction in collagen and elastin causes the dermis of the skin to collapse and lines and wrinkles to form. and collagen. Healthy well supported skin has resilience and elasticity which (see diagram below) allows movement as well as the ability to spring back to place. Photo ageing impairs the growth of healthy skin and destroys the skin’s elasticity. Photoageing - and the Skin Degeneration Cycle
What are the effects of photoageing?

3. HYALURONIC ACID What is hyaluronic acid? Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a substance found naturally in our bodies, which binds water and hydrates the skin. HA is a polysaccharide (a sugar molecule) and is one of nature’s most versatile and fascinating molecules. As we age HA functions become impaired and our skin loses its natural elasticity and youthful volume as a result.
What are the functions of hyaluronic acid in the skin? Some of the functions of hyaluronic acid are to: • Create volume and tone in the tissue by attracting water • Influence the function of other skin constituents, such as collagen and elastin • Cushion and lubricate tissue • Transport essential nutrients from the bloodstream to skin cells The HA molecule is water-loving, acting as a kind of natural sponge. Many of its functions in the body can be attributed to the water binding ability of HA. Babies are born with plentiful supplies of hyaluronic acid which is why their skin is so healthy looking, soft and plump.
What are the functions of hyaluronic acid in tissue repair? • Hyaluronic acid creates an environment for skin cells which is conducive to the production of healthy looking skin. • HA promotes the flow of nutrients to the skin. It attracts water and influences the function of other skin constituents such as collagen and elastin.
RESTYLANE Vital and hyaluronic acid The hyaluronic acid in all RESTYLANE products is a biotech-produced stabilized hyaluronic acid of nonanimal origin. The stabilization process in Q-MED’s patented NASHA™-technology results in a long-lasting and tissue-friendly minimally modified hyaluronic acid molecule. The HA molecule in all RESTYLANE products closely resembles our natural HA in our skin which reduces the risk of inflammatory reactions.
RESTYLANE Vital and the skin degeneration cycle RESTYLANE Vital is a crystal clear, pure, smooth hyaluronic acid gel which when injected into the skin, enhances the skin’s natural supply and ensures prolonged hydration. It moisturizes from within. The function of HA in our skin becomes impaired as we age. By injecting RESTYLANE Vital into the skin, both skin elasticity and skin surface roughness are improved (i). RESTYLANE Vital creates a deep hydration reservoir in the skin which means that water bound to hyaluronic acid is available to keep the natural hydration balance in the skin. The benefits of this treatment generally last for several months. As a result of RESTYLANE Vital, the skin’s overall condition and health is improved and the visible signs of aging effects can be treated effectively.

• Its water binding properties creates the skin’s own hydration system to keep the skin looking plump and smooth.

Cosmetic Surgery
at home or abroad:
Plastic surgery is not something to be entered into lightly, and your results could be determined, in part, by the information you have at the very beginning as well as by your Surgeon understanding you, what you are hoping to achieve and your lifestyle.
18 | absolute cosmetics
Do your homework beforehand, and don’t be afraid to ask as many questions as you need. If you feel your Surgeon resents your inquisitiveness, or if you feel pushed into surgery, find someone else. Listen to your “gut reaction” and choose the Company/Surgeon you feel most comfortable with – go to several different Surgeons and ask the same questions and only choose the one you feel the most comfortable with, not just because they are the cheapest. After all, this is all about you and you will be the person living with the results! These are some of the questions you should ask before going ahead with any surgery, whether at home or abroad:
Choosing the Company/ Surgeon • Is the company based in your country? If not: - do they offer consultations before surgery and follow up appointments in your country? - what will happen if something goes wrong after surgery? Will they pay for you to fly back to the clinic/pay your hotel stay etc.,? - do the surgeons and other medical staff speak your language? - how long after surgery can you fly home? Patients should always stay in the country they have their surgery for AT LEAST 1 week post-surgery so that they can have their first follow up
appointment with the Surgeon. In addition, most incidences of infection occur within the first week, so you should be near the clinic should this occur. Also, the chances of getting a DVT (deep vein thrombosis) are increased when you have surgery, so you should not fly for at least 1 week afterwards. • NEVER choose a company that does not offer a consultation prior to surgery. Companies who do the consultation on the day of surgery should be avoided at all costs. • NEVER choose a company that offers consultations and/or follow ups on webcam. • Expect to fill out a medical history questionnaire – the more information the Surgeon/medical staff have the better. If you aren’t asked even basic medical questions, choose another company. • If the cost of surgery sounds too inexpensive, then the level of service and care you can expect is likely to be very basic, or nonexistent. • Beware of very cheap deals or companies that push you to have more than the procedure you are interested in. • When you go for your consultation, who will you be meeting – a Sales Person/Coordinator/Nurse or the Surgeon? If you are not going to meet the Surgeon, don’t go along! • Will the Surgeon who you
• How long have you been a Plastic Surgeon? • How many of this operation do you carry out each year? • What is the rate of complications that you experience with this kind of operation? • Are you a member of the GMC (General Medical Council)? Are you a member of The British Association of Plastic Surgeons http://www. baaps.org.uk (BAAPS) or The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons http://www.baaps. org.uk (BAAPS) or are you on the Specialist Register for Plastic Surgeons? • Can I see some “before and after” photographs of patients you have operated on?
• Can I speak to any of your past patients?
The Hospital Or Clinic • Where will the cosmetic surgery be carried out? Can I visit the hospital before surgery in person or tour online? • What are the back-up medical facilities if something goes wrong during the operation? • Will I have a private room? • What is the post-operative infection rate at the clinic/hospital where the operation will take place? • Is the clinic/hospital MRSA and Cdif clear?
The Operation •What pre-operative tests will I need to have (i.e., a blood test and/or ECG?) •How long will I have to stay in the hospital or clinic? •How long does the operation last? •What type of anaesthesia will be used? What are the risks of this type of anaesthesia? • What can I expect after the operation?

Who makes the laser that treats you and does it matter?
When choosing where to go for your cosmetic treatments, such as laser hair removal, it is important to do your research. You want to be sure that the clinic you choose will provide the best treatment for your skin. You may typically ask, “Is the clinic registered with the Care Quality Commission?” or “what qualifications does my clinician have?” But how often do you ask the question “which company did you buy your laser from?” We investigated one of the UK’s leading suppliers to find out why clinics using Lynton equipment deliver outstanding service and results. Lynton was founded over 15 years ago (in the early days of laser treatments) and was established by scientists from the University of Manchester. With years of experience in researching lasers for skin treatments, it was these scientists who went on to develop Lynton’s entire range of lasers and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) technology. In fact all the Lasers and IPL manufactured by Lynton (here in the UK) are designed and constructed to meet strict medical standards; reassuring when you’re the one being treated by a laser! They also have a team of factory trained engineers who regularly visit Lynton clinics to check the systems and ensure that they are in prefect working order. Lynton have manufactured Lasers and IPL’s for clinics throughout the world and supply to over 400
locations within the UK, we also found that their lasers are regularly used by the NHS, confirming their clinical excellence and extensive knowledge of laser technology. Our investigation revealed Lasers and IPL to be complex devices, making us realise it is all too easy to sit back and assume you’re being treated by a quality machine. To the uneducated, a laser is just a laser, but a Lynton Laser comes with a whole host of qualified engineers, clinical training, support and guidance to ensure the best possible treatment will be provided. There are a number of manufacturers who supply to clinics across the UK; however, Lynton is one of the leading companies who supply clinics with equipment AND an entire package of support services.
The level of training offered to practitioners using Lynton equipment is second to none, demonstrated by the fact that Lynton are the only company to offer laser training approved by a University (University of Manchester). High quality training of practitioners is crucial in ensuring you receive a safe and effective treatment. The Lynton Team train other clinicians to use their equipment, passing on their high level of expertise to the practitioner who treats you! In fact, Lynton are so confident in the quality of their equipment, they opened their own clinic in South Manchester. Here they offer a wide variety of non-surgical aesthetic treatments all delivered with the same high standard of clinical expertise and technical knowledge.
Our investigation made us aware that it does matter who makes the laser and where it comes from. In fact, it is a key factor in choosing where to go for treatment. With a combination of clinical knowledge and scientific expertise, it’s fair to say you’re in safe hands with clinics that use Lynton products. All the experience behind the machine ultimately provides you with peace of mind when being treated. So if you’re considering any non-surgical cosmetic treatment don’t forget to ask, is it Lynton?

A New Technology Safely Improves the Appearance of Hyperpigmentation without Irritation and Side Effects A new, safe, synthetic peptide technology shown to significantly help improve the appearance of unwanted discoloration, age spots, sun spots and uneven skin tone is now available through Wigmore Medical to help people achieve picture perfect skin.
before
Developed by dermatological researchers at Stanford University, Lumixyl’s ground-breaking technology is the only peptide shown to measurably promote healthy skin function in restraining tyrosinase, the enzyme responsible for initiating the overproduction of melanin. It is melanin that can cause uneven pigmentation and dark spots.
Lumixyl is created for patients seeking more even skin-tone including those with: • Melasma • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
after
• Sun spots, age spots or liver spots • Photodamage • Hyperpigmentation caused by systemic disease or prescription drugs Clinical studies demonstrate that topical use of Lumixyl visibly improves mild to moderate hyperpigmentation with excellent volunteer satisfaction in as little as 8 weeks. Studies show that Lumixyl, promotes the moderation of melanin more efficaciously than hydroquinone,l which has been the gold standard. At equal concentrations, skin that was treated with the Lumixyl peptide expressed a reduced production of

melanin by as much as 40 percent compared to those treated with hydroquinone, which reduced production by only 7 percent in the study. “The results of studies conducted at Stanford are impressive, showing a 40 percent improvement in melanin related darkening.,” commented Nowell Solish, MD, FRCP, Assistant Professor at The University of Toronto. “When used as directed, Lumixyl appears to significantly help the skin’s ability to diminish dark spots imparting users with brighter, more even skin tone while limiting irritation, red blotches or even sensitivity to sunlight.” Moreover, safety studies confirm that Lumixyl is safe for topical use and does not cause irritation or allergic reaction. There is no increased sensitivity to sunlight unlike many commonly used brightening agents and Lumixyl is gentle for all skin types and tones. “Hydroquinone has had some controversy in the recent past and this product offers a nonhydroquinone alternative that shows good clinical efficacy in treating discoloration without causing irritation,” stated Neil Sadick, MD, FAAD, FAACS, FACP, FACPh. Lumixyl Topical Brightening Crème can be used alone or to compliment other treatments such as chemical peels and laser resurfacing to diminish dark spots, uneven pigmentation and improve overall skin tone.
Sweaty armpits are a common problem, always embarrassing and sometimes distressing. Fortunately once your aesthetic practitioner has identified the cause of your problem there are several things that can be done to help. by Dr Paul Dewhirst
Hyperhidrosis aka “Sweaty Armpits” Firstly avoid soaps that irritate the skin. Use a moisturiser, such as aqueous cream, as a soap substitute which avoids unnecessary damage to the skin and is readily available from your pharmacist. I know it’s easier said than done but try to avoid things that you know make your sweating worse like stressful situations, getting hot and eating salty or spicy food. Wear clothes that are loose under the armpit and try to avoid man-made fibres such as nylon and lycra which are notorious for making you sweat more. Some clothing colours show up sweat marks more than others and I find that as a rule black or white clothes are best. You can even buy disposable underarm sweat
pads (Sweatex®) which are easily obtained on the internet and can be very helpful. I suppose it’s too obvious to say use your antiperspirant regularly and not just rely on deodorants to stop you smelling. In fact fresh sweat doesn’t smell it’s only when bacteria build up in sweaty clothes that haven’t been changed and washed regularly that you start to smell. If your usual toiletries don’t help try the strong antiperspirant Ammonium chloride (Driclor®) which is also available as a roll-on from your local pharmacist. Driclor® works by blocking the sweat pores but can cause itching and skin irritation so please take expert advice on its use.
Botulinum toxin injections work well for sweaty armpits. The treatment is relatively painless, quick and simple to perform. You will need a number of superficial injections into both armpits and you usually see the benefits within 3-5 days. A recent large European clinical trial showed that well over 90% of patients responded well to the treatment. Some patients went 16 months between treatments though the average time was 7 months. During that time armpit sweat levels were reduced to virtually zero. The treatment was also shown to be extremely safe with no serious side effects. A small number of patients (less than 5%) got a mild flu-like illness
for a day or so. Your aesthetic practitioner will be able to give you further information on this and be able to answer any more questions you may have. In severe cases that do not respond adequately to any of the above then surgery may be an option. This involves removing the sweat glands from the armpit and though very successful is not without significant risks. You would need to be referred to a surgeon who specialises in this procedure. You can get excellent and impartial advice from the Hyperhidrosis Support Group who can be found at www.hyperhidrosisuk.org absolute cosmeticsabsolute 23 cosmetics

Maximising the benefit One of the questions that patients frequently ask their practitioner when they are thinking about having an aesthetic procedure is: ‘how long will the beneficial effect last?’
Opting for such treatments is a major decision – not just financially but also emotionally, so most of us will naturally want to be sure that we gain the maximum benefit from whatever treatment we have. Of course, the answer to any question about the longevity of an effect will vary from procedure to procedure, product to product and also person to person. However, how you care for your skin before and after a treatment can have a major impact on not just speeding up the skin’s recovery but also on maintaining the benefits for as long as possible.
It’s a medical fact that the quality and quantity of hyaluronic acid, naturally present in skin to maintain its plumpness and firmness, diminishes with age. The skin can then become dehydrated, tissue can start to sag and the first wrinkles begin to appear. However it is possible to recover firm, welltoned skin by replenishing it with the use of additional hyaluronic acid. This can be delivered not only through dermal fillers but now also with the application of a new generation of scientifically-based topical treatments. This month sees an exciting development in this field as Lifestyle Aesthetics brings Teosyal Cosmeceuticals to the UK, to join the award winning Teosyal range of 100% hyaluronic acid dermal fillers and create a complete antiageing skincare programme. According to Lifestyle Aesthetics, Teosyal Cosmeceuticals is a unique 24 | absolute cosmetics
range of intensive topical antiaging treatments specifically formulated to complement the brand’s successful injectable product range. Based on the use of microspheres of hyaluronic acid, the four cosmetic products in the new range have been designed to provide a three-fold effect: indepth action to lessen the signs of aging; correct and cover skin imperfections and prepare skin for cosmetic injections.
The Pre/Post Injection treatment (supplied in an airless, 30ml tube) has been developed to help prevent inflammation and then help to soothe and regenerate the skin after the procedure. It has an intensive, active formula which not only contains hyaluronic acid but also Neutrazen® (to soothe and reduce skin reactions such as redness, swelling and irritations) and extract of arnica (with its well-known reparatory and anti-inflammatory properties). Covering Repair (supplied in a single compact) is a tinted covering treatment that effectively corrects skin imperfections by combining a strong concentration of colour pigments with a formula containing both hyaluronic acid and extract of arnica for maximum coverage and optimal care. The four shades in each compact can be blended to produce the closest possible skin tone match and flawless finish whilst at the same time helping to hydrate the skin and soothe postprocedure irritation. As well as a post-injection skincare treatment, the Covering Repair is also recommended for concealing redness, spots and dark under-eye circles. The final product in the range is Advanced Filler (supplied in a 50ml airless pump bottle), an innovative anti-wrinkle, antiaging skincare treatment which comes in two variants – one for normal to combination skin and one for dry to very dry skin. Based on an exclusive
Early reviews for Teosyal® Cosmeceuticals range combination of intensive active ingredients, it is designed to have a deep moisturising effect, helping to plump and fill out wrinkles and lines from the inside. In this product, the microspheres of hyaluronic acid are combined with matrikines (which stimulate the neosynthesis of collagen, fibronectin and hyaluronic acid); Argireline (which acts on superficial wrinkles such as forehead lines and crow’s feet) and Vitamin C (which helps protect cells’ lipid structure and maintain hyaluronic acid integrity). The Advanced Filler also claims to help wrinkles which have been previously injected to remain filled for longer. During independent clinical studies, wrinkle depth was shown to decrease by as much as 52 per cent(*1.) and wrinkle volume to decrease by as much as 56 per cent(*1.). In addition, the skin was shown to begin its restructuring process at the dermal-epidermal junction in less than 10 days(*2.). All four products are hypoallergenic, tested under dermatological control, parabenfree and phenoxyethanol-free. The new range is receiving its official debut at this month’s 10 Years Younger Live show but it has already been achieving rave reviews from the first practitioners and the patients to try out some advance supplies.
The practitioners “I have just tried the Advanced Filler for normal skin and it feels so luxurious to the touch, it goes on silky smooth and feels great on my skin. After only using it for about 2 weeks I can definitely say my skin feels plumper. I will be recommending this for my patients and I think it will enhance the results I get with my dermal fillers.” Christine Springer, Brunel Beauty and Medical, Bristol “I really appreciate being able to offer my patients a complete skincare service – from helping them to prepare for a procedure to assisting them to maximise the
results. Every patient’s skin reacts differently after a procedure but these products offer a way for the patient themselves to help minimise their recovery time and, if necessary, cover any temporary reactions.” Rachel Gray Smart, Enhance Medical, Cheltenham
The patients “Immediately I saw these products I wanted them – the packaging is to die for!! The Advanced filler lived up to my expectations and I feel my skin looks more luminous than normal.” Clare Power, Ballymena, Northern Ireland “I feel totally pampered just spending that little extra time on myself each day. All my friends are just starting to notice the difference and are commenting on how well I look. Instead of my skin feeling dry and lifeless, it feels hydrated and smooth” Sue Hood, West Country “I love the Covering Repair product and found it to be really helpful. I am prone to hyperpigmentation and having just been on holiday my face was looking quite patchy in certain areas. Using this product gives me an all over, even colour as well as a very natural look.” Maria Eke, Swindon, Wiltshire “As I really have a very reactive skin my partner always knows when I have been spending money on my Botox and fillers. My doctor recently gave me a Teosyal pre/post injection cream, and it worked, very little redness and none of the usual swelling, and no argument when I arrived home!” Annette Peters, Guildford, Surrey The Teosysal Cosmeceuticals range will be available through selected Teosyal practitioners from the beginning of July, with a roll-out to selected premium retail outlets later in the year.

M Mythbusters yths Transform discuss Botox Line and wrinkle smoothing injections... As we grow older, lines and wrinkles can become a concern. They affect everybody, man or woman, from supermodels to mere mortals too! They are caused by every day movements and expressions, sun damage, smoking and other, unavoidable environmental factors such as free radicals. As well as all these factors, (as if they weren’t enough!) natural collagen breaks down and skin gets less elastic the older we get. Transform has a range of surgical and non-surgical treatments to counter the effects of lines and wrinkles, giving you a fresher, more youthful appearance. One such treatment is line and wrinkles smoothing injections.
Who will line and wrinkle smoothing injections benefit?
The treatment we all know as BOTOX® has now been formally approved for cosmetic use under a new name - VISTABEL®. VISTABEL® is ideal for minimising frown lines and crows feet and for creating younger looking skin in the face and neck line.
