Day 1: Distance = 0 km Altitude = sea level My travel from sea to mountain begins on the central beach of Barcelona. The soft sand stretches perpendicular to my travels, and I weave in and out of the crowds of people sunbathing until I hit a sprawling boardwalk, passing raised yellow flags indicating the rough seas behind me. Passing through the Sea Point hotel, I manage to remain on an open, expansive area of pavers that juts out into the sea without entering the city proper. I swim across a small harbor populated by docked sailboats until I hit a new peninsula of land dredged up from the sea this morning. The new landscape rises in folds from the waves, and as I cross it I am presented with a soaring wall and battlements that separates the old city from the sea. Crossing several lanes of busy highway which leave the buildings of El Born and the Gothic quarter remain removed from the Mediterranean, I begin an upward trek along Via Laietana. This wide street serves as another border, dividing the Old Town running Northwest, and the slope remains a level 2% grade. Outside my apartment, movie crews are setting up a scene for a post-apocalyptic zombie movie, and without the busy cars and toursits, the elegant, dramatic, and stark features of the stone bulidings along this street serve the filmmakers well.

Day 2: Distance = 2 km Altitude = 10 m above sea level Leaving the Old Town behind, I pass through a cramped, tunnel which crosses a pointed protrusion from the town wall. Emerging out into a small plaza left over from the footprint of the wall, I can see La Rabassada in the distance. Eixample and the regular blocks of Cerdà’s plan stretch rhythmically before me, keeping pace with my journey towards the mountains. The modern buildings support a busy commercial street that remains continuos until I am forced to cross the large, diagonal avenue which cuts through the regular grid plan. On the other side of this street I notice a drastic change in scale. This small town serving as a farmer’s village for the center of Barcelona consists of irregular streets and small blocks in lieu of the mega blocks with large courtyard’s in Cerdà’s grid that is being constructed over the once fertile fields. The slope is becoming gradually steeper now as I walk through the village. It flattens out for a moment as two forks of a river traversing the base of the mountains flow through the fields. Upon crossing these two, sinuous streets, the major called Travessera de Dalt, I begin a steep, upward trek at a grade of 15% until I crest a small hill and stand in the Jardins de Mercè Rodoreda with a fantastic view backwards to the sea.

Day 3: Distance = 5.7 km Altitude = 162 m above sea level Leaving the hill, I decend for a brief time back into the small village. The streets I cross here have begun to take on the shape of the contours in the land, and my path becomes gradually steeper again as I face a final climb up the mountain. I have left the village now, crossing a large futbol camp along the way with the sounds of children shouting and laughing acompanying the soft thump of feet meeting soft leather. I cross a final, large highway running along the face of the mountains and begin a steep climb up into a dense, deciduous forest of oak dotted irregularly with the rich villas of the wealthy. Walking through the scrub brush and moving over several small crests on the mountainside, I reach my journey’s end in a thin copse of trees at 484 meters above sea level. From here I can see clearly the regular grid and irregular medieval streets merging together in a rhythmic march down to the sea. 17

Main features of a Karst

Sinkholes

Losing Streams

Natural Springs

Losing streams are surface streams that lose a significant amount of water flow to the subsurface through bedrock openings.

Sinkholes are rounded depressions in the landscape formed by water slowly dissolving the rock below or, in some cases, when an underground cavity collapses.

A spring is a cave filled with water, which is discharged to the surface. These can be a great source of pure and filtered, natural water.

Site as Layered Park

Housing Housing

Applying geometric layering and the corresponding properties to the site in section enables the program to adjust to and relate with the site and all of its formations.

Caves

Caves are cavities formed beneath the earth’s surface, when water dissolves the limestone or dolomite by chemical action. Dry caves are left behind when the aquifer line drops below the cave floor level.

The site is divided sectionally into four strata which different programmatic elements may occupy. This enables the park and what lies beneath to be understood by the location and opacity of different pieces of program.

Sizing Schedule : 96 Basic Frames 142 Side Surfaces 202 Top Surfaces

Lengths of specific sizes of dimensional lumber can be calculated by the schedule. Frames with an area of 10 SF would need 13’ linear feet of 2’ x 6” lumber. The totals can then be grouped and added by dimensional lumber type, using the height and width parameters to further determine which lengths are cut from each piece of lumber.
