Avoiding Problems on the Road

Avoiding Problems on the Road There are a lot of things that could go wrong on the roads. Some of them are the result of weather, others from mechanical issues, and sometimes the stupidity of drivers (including yourself – let’s face it). Fortunately for you, a lot of these issues can be avoided. Here are a few real-world scenarios that have caused accidents in the past and how you can avoid them.

Scenario 1: Weather Mother Nature really doesn’t care if you are late to work or if you have to drive from California to Montana in less than 48 hours. She will rain, sleet, hail, and snow whenever she pleases. Man cannot control her. In this case, the only things you can do is plan ahead and prepare yourself and your vehicle. Check weather forecasts for the locations you will be traveling through and allow extra travel time if you expect to hit some nasty weather. Pack an emergency car kit with food, clothing, light, a radio, and other essential items. Put chains on your tires, make sure your tank is filled up, and that everything is working properly before you head out.

Scenario 2: Traffic Jams Traffic jams are another great hassle that plagues mankind. There are two types of traffic jams: those that are predictable and those that are not. The first type of traffic jams is a lot easier to deal with. If you know that the roads are going to be busy during rush hour or closed due to construction, plan an alternate route. Carpool, take public transport, or leave earlier/later than the rest of the crowd if possible. If you cannot avoid it, prepare yourself mentally. Know and accept that you will be waiting. Take a snack with you, bring along an audiobook, or some of your favorite music. The second type of traffic jams is more difficult. Accidents, unexpected road closures, or power outages can all slow or stop the traffic. Remember that this is no one’s particular fault. Don’t get enraged over something that really has nothing to do with you. Don’t take personal offence from an accident. No one did this to be malicious, so keep your temper under control and wait it out patiently. And remember – screaming and honking at other vehicles will get you nowhere.

Scenario 3: Stupidity A lot of the road problems we suffer from come from the stupidity of human beings. Mostly issues a rise when drivers get distracted or if they get angry. If someone is driving strangely, be kind and assume that there is a bee in the car, a child is screaming, they just broke up, or some other sympathy -worthy reason. If you get angry, things will most likely just get worse. People who are angry have less patience, get more aggressive, and are more likely to have heart problems later in life. Besides, auto insurance in Encino probably won’t understand if you ram someone’s car for driving below the speed limit. So, take a chill pill and be understanding. You know you’ve done stupid things when driving too.
