Spring Cleaning: A Simple Guide to Do it Right Spring is in full swing and if you haven’t gotten to your spring cleaning yet, perhaps this weekend is the time to do it. Here are a few tips to help you maximize your cleaning energies as you start to prepare. Starting with the reduction of clutter and moving to the sanitizing of surfaces in your home, the following are great tips to make sure you get everything done right. Begin with throwing out the things you no longer need.

Decrease the Clutter The first step is to identify what you should keep and what you shouldn’t. Go through wardrobes. Find things that no longer fit, are fading, or you simply have too many of and toss them into 2 separate piles. One pile is to be thrown away (these are the clothes that have become to raggedy to use). The other pile is for giveaways. You can offer them to friends, family, or Good Will. These are the clothes that work just fine, they just no longer fit, are excessive, or don’t look how you would like. Once wardrobes are cleaned out, dispose of those piles as you planned. Once you finish with your clothing, go through each room in the house and do likewise with all of your possessions. Do you really need 17 sticky pads of paper, or can you give some away? You may be extremely organized and feel the need to keep receipts for reconciliation at some future point, but how many years back should you save? Anything beyond 5-10 might be getting a bit excessive; consider throwing those out.

Create a junk pile and a giveaway pile in each room. Sort and dispose of your possessions appropriately. You’ll feel free the more excess clutter you remove. The place will open up to you, making a desk inviting, or bedroom breathable.

Shed Some Light Now that you feel freer in the room, it’s time to get down to cleaning. Open up the windows and doors to remove the smell of must that surely has grown throughout the winter. Open all the blinds and let sunlight pour into the place. The sun will help you identify a few obvious places you need to clean. Suddenly you notice how dirty the stainless steel refrigerator has become, or the striking stain on the carpet that was hardly noticeable under the yellow light of lamps. Using light everywhere, identify the obvious places that need to be cleaned and get right to work. Grab a reliable stain remover and a good stainless steel polish to get the job done. Once that’s through, go around the house (a room at a time so as not to overwhelm your workload) and clean every surface. Vacuum every inch of carpet. Wash every window. Get into the cracks too. This means between the cushions, under the furniture, and along the window tracks. You’ll be surprised at how much dirt has accumulated over that time. Once you get through all of that, your house will be cleaner and less cluttered than it was before. That’s what you’re looking for.
