The Dangers of Winter Driving Throughout the year millions of people drive to and from work or travel for vacation trips, this may occur in all types of weather. Probably the most difficult weather condition to drive in is snow and ice especially in blizzard conditions. There are a number of factors that can make winter driving challenging. For example, you may encounter slick icy roads, sleet that glazes ice over the car and roads, and blurred vision when driving through a blizzard. The snow can also create a number of challenges for traffic as a whole, here are some examples: slow traffic, visibility distance, lane obstruction, and accident risk. It is important to be aware of the potential dangers posed by such conditions. If warnings are ignored there is a greater risk that you could be involved in an accident. The fact that your car could hit a patch of ice and spin out of control, or possibly get stuck on the side of the road, are legitimate reasons to use caution when driving in the snow.

Snow driving tips Although there are many dangers during winter driving it does not mean you should not travel, but use caution. Your best defense for bad weather is being prepared ahead of time so you know what the conditions will be. This can be done by checking the weather, and plan on delays so you aren’t rushing or speeding. Here are some great tips on preparing for snowy weather: Think Ahead: Be familiar with your vehicle and have it maintained regularly. Make sure that the windshield is cleared of snow and ice. Also check your tire tread and antifreeze levels, and mixture. Also remove the snow from the roof of the vehicle, and add more weight to the rear axle if it is possible. This usually applies to trucks but is still an option to consider so your vehicle is balanced. Be prepared: Having a car safety kit in case of emergencies is a vital addition to your preparation before driving in snowy conditions. The kit should include the following: Flashlight, a blanket for you and other passengers, water, food, jumper cables, road flares, a hardware mechanic tool set, gloves. Be aware: It is important to know the road conditions and how they will affect your travel time or even the type of vehicle you are driving. Be familiar of safety precautions, and how you would plan how to combat a hazardous issue. Having an emergency or researching survival skills in case of an emergency could be a significant difference for you.

Driving techniques There are some driving techniques that can help protect you and others on the road. First, do not just slam on the breaks this will make the vehicle spin or fishtail. Do not turn sharp this can also cause you to lose control of your vehicle. You also want to watch the speed limit and plan on slowing down more often. Pumping the brakes and slowly coming to a complete stop will keep you and others sage on the road.

Even after following these tips the worst is still a possibility. If this occurs, contact your Colorado auto insurance agency and get the help you’ll need.
