Since buying the Snoqualmie Valley Pet Parlor in 2005 we’ve built many friendships with our clients here in the Valley. We enjoy providing customer based grooming that focuses on doing our best to give your dog the haircut you desire. Your dog’s safety and comfort always come first with us. We are very proud to be the official groomers of Three Rivers Rescue and feel that our handling of rescue dogs has helped us in grooming many dogs that are considered “too difficult” by other groomers. Give us a call today to set up an appointment and see what we’re all about! We are open Thursday-Monday from 10-5 (Yes! We’re open on Sunday and Monday!) and closed on Tuesday and Wednesday. 364308

Businesswomen are making the difference in crucial economic times BY SETH TRUSCOTT AND TERRI BARCLAY Valley Record Staff

Now more than ever, women make the wheels of business turn in the Snoqualmie Valley. If not outright owned by women, most Valley businesses operate with a woman at the helm, as a partner, co-owner or vital staff member, Women’s efforts are making the difference in the Valley economy during challenging economic times. It’s a tough climate out there, but women business owners bring a lot of inspiration and creativity to the local economy, spearheading promotion and expansion in several sectors of the community. Women entrepreneurs find innovative ways to bring new products, events and services to their shops and offices, and to the Valley as a whole. Many woman hold dual roles, acting as committee chairs and volunteer coordinators, doing far more than run their businesses. At the same time, woman are balancing their home roles with their efforts in the community. They are active in public service, at city offices, clinics, schools and hospitals. Involved in the festivals and community projects that bring interest to the Valley, many of them have given their all to make this region such a wonderful place to work, live and play.

Women in Business The Valley is also fortunate to have the Women in Business nonprofit organization in existence. Now in its second year, this group provides an avenue for women to share ideas, network, provide leadership and grow on a professional and personal level. Every month, members of the group meet to share ideas, network and hear from business-oriented speakers. This month, for example, author and adventurer Helen Thayer will talk share experiences featured in her book, “Polar Dreams,” offering lessons that apply to reaching major goals. The Women in Business meet at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 9, at Boxley’s in North Bend. Learn more about that group at www.svwib. com. In this publication, we also recognize several of the woman who have helped change the Valley and make an impact here. Rebecca Dale is the Valley’s new opthalmologist, and Lee Grumman is Carnation’s mayor. Mary Miller is a North Bend woman who documents the faces and places of the Valley with her camera. And, in a historic retrospective, readers can learn about Julia Harshman, the businesswoman who brought the telephone to Fall City a century ago. Join us in recognizing the women who are vital assets to the growth and development of the local economy.

Love for the lens Q&A with photographer Mary Miller BY SETH TRUSCOTT Editor

Life-changing moments have guided Mary Miller, owner of Down to Earth Photography in North Bend, to where she is today. Miller, who was voted the top Valley photographer for 2010, is a former college photographer who has grown from life and business challenges to become immersed in her craft. Here, she shares her thoughts on life, art and being a woman in business.

How did you start your career?

Courtesy photo

My career began out of pure passion, which only grows deeper and more profound. The art itself really grew roots for me while I was a staff photographer for the college paper at Michigan State University. My first lesson was actually when I was given ‘no’ assignment while at the college newspaper, and had to rely on discovering subjects quickly and concisely — no giving up — and bringing home a viable and printable image. Hunting out the image thrust me into looking at the world completely differently, on a level of delicate intimacy,

Mary Miller, owner of Down to Earth Photography, is a perennial top local lenswoman. She has lived and used her camera to document the Valley for the past 19 years. and the beginnings of timing the image, how my body movement was instrumental to composing, and truly trusting myself. I never forgot that.

What was an important lesson for you? When I had Bell’s Palsy 10 years ago, I saw that my life could change in a matter of moments. Through that healing, I made a promise to myself to ‘shoot with joyousness,’ and I do.

I am life-taught, and while I respect so many other professional artists, I have learned to trust my intuition, cultivating a natural style that can dip and groove to my clients’ specific needs. Edgy and artistic, casual and classic, I move fluidly with the moment and subject. I put myself out there as much as possible as an artist, and have dropped fear from the palette. It is a beautiful experience to be true to yourself, and your art, without limitation.

As teachers, my husband and I knew after 30 years of service we’d retire and live off our pensions, social security and 403b investments. We’d be financially independent! It was 1998 when we learned that we were wrong. No one ever told us what was required to be able to afford retirement. So, after teaching 20 years, I changed careers. Working as a financial services agent at Hauglie Insurance Agency is a perfect career for me. For 12 years I have been helping individuals and families just like us prepare for their future - to send children to college and invest for retirement. I help them reach their financial goals. I would love to help you do the same.

Community

housands of people drive by the Fall City totem pole every day, but few people may know the person to whom the colorful carving is dedicated. Approach the pole on foot, however, and you’ll find a half-hidden plaque dedicating it to the memory of Julia Harshman, who pioneered the local telephone company. As head of the Harshman Telephone Company, Harshman held tremendous respect in Fall City for her efforts tying the community together. “You can imagine that in a little unincorporated town, the telephone company was the center of the world,” said Fall City Historical Society President Ruth Pickering. “She had such integrity that if somebody was going to know anything that went on in the town, she was the person who did.” Julia Harshman came to Fall City in 1903, with her husband Newton and their 7-year-old daughter Gertrude. In 1908, Harshman became the owner of a small telephone company with about 30 paying customers. She had loaned Fall City grocer Emerson Neighbors about $300, a considerable sum at that time, to set up a phone company and run lines from Tolt, as Carnation was called in those days, to the Northern Pacific depot at Fall City. Neighbors created the network, but ended

up taking a new job in Seattle. “He hadn’t been able to pay back the money, so he just gave her the telephone company,” Pickering said. Later that year, Newton sold his interest in a local mill and joined Julia as supervisor of equipment for the company. But Mrs. Harshman was unquestionably in charge of the company. “I’m sure she had quite a few employees,” Pickering said. “Half the people in town worked at the switchboard at one time or another.” The Harshman Telephone Company served Fall City, Tolt and surrounding areas. In 1912, the Harshmans acquired the house at 33429 Southeast Redmond-Fall City Road, where they installed the telephone switchboard and their family. After Newton’s death in 1929, Julia changed the name of the company to the Fall City Telephone Company, and daughter Gertrude and her husband George Satterlee and their children helped run the company. Julia died in 1933 after an extended illness, but the Fall City Telephone Company continued to operate from the Prescott-Harshman House (which became a King County Landmark in 1984) until 1947, when the business was purchased by Cascade Telephone. When Julia died, she was cremated. Her daughter scattered her ashes from the bridge at Fall City. After her death, the Fall City Totem Pole, installed in 1934, was dedicated to her memory. There are two signs at the pole. One tells the history of the carving itself, while the other honors Harshman. Pickering said Harshman was just one of many women who worked, ran businesses and made a difference in Fall City’s history. “The wives made the town work,” Pickering said. “But not all of them were as much in evidence as she was.”

Above, Julia Harshman, photographed circa 1890, moved to Fall City in 1903, and became the major investor in the community’s new phone company five years later. Her home, left, was the center of operations. It still stands today. Inset, an advertisement from the Fall City High School Spirit newspaper.

What’s your business philosophy? My unpretentious philosophy is really quite simple, much like imagery can be. I strive to provide products and service that my clients are proud to show off. I put my talents and my personality out there every day, happily. I walk my walk, and talk my talk, with a smile. It couldn’t feel more right when you’re being true to yourself. My business has a relationship-oriented, personalized focus for individual and group needs. Hitting the mark is specifically satisfying for my customer. Leaving them not only smiling but referring me on is so rewarding.

Have you ever faced challenges in your work? I have had moments where I have felt intimidated by those surrounding my subject, such as body guards of a thenundisclosed Alzheimer’s-afflicted Ronald Reagan. If you walk in fear, you stop your own momentum. Photography is all about finding the momentum, going with the moment and releasing personal judgement. I love people, and that aspect of my personality was supported by my mom, who passed away recently. She was my first fan.

How do you balance work and life? I work playfully and am a physically active woman. You might find me shooting from a helicopter or a cherry picker. I put my all into what I do, safely, and reward myself after a job well done. Keeping my mind, body, and spirit healthy and strong is a consistent, lifelong goal. I live life to the fullest.

Where would a potential photographer start? I would tell an up-and-coming photographer to be openminded, less driven by agenda and a huge ego. It’s more about being true to yourself, and beyond everything else, know that you can. As a freelancer, I have cultivated individuals who I rely on to do their job well, such as my professional graphics persons and printers. We become a team. Communication is a key to making that team work well and stay happy.

Learning never stops for eye doctor Find a field you are passionate about, ophthalmologist says By Valley Record Staff

Important lessons are learned every day for Rebecca Dale, eye doctor and founder of Snoqualmie Falls Ophthalmology, PLLC. Dale, who opened her business this year in Snoqualmie’s Kimball Creek neighborhood, designed her practice around providing patients with a caring, quality experience. She extends her philosophy of care to employees, business associates and the people of the community. “We exist to serve all who come through our doors by providing medical and surgical eye care with excellence and love,” Dale said. Dale served as a general medical officer in the United States Navy for three years. During humanitarian deployment in Southeast Asia, she had a chance to help Navy ophthalmologists give sight to people who were legally blind from catatracts. Completing her naval service, Dale moved to Portland, Ore., where she underwent three years of specialty training in ophthalmology at the Casey Eye Institute. She was in private practice in Mount Vernon for two years prior to deciding to open Snoqualmie Falls Ophthalmology. “From the business side, I’ve found it is very important to trust my instincts,” Dale said. “When we first started, we were out-sourcing our billing processes. I couldn’t put my finger on what was making me uneasy, but something didn’t feel quite right.” So, early on, Office Manager Sarah Davis shouldered the immense task of bringing thebilling processes in-house, learning about ophthalmology billing —which was new to her — and a new electronic billing system. “It was a lot of work, but definitely worthwhile to follow that instinct,” Dale said. Once the process was in-house, they found the new

Dale emphasizes a philosophy of caring at her practice. system had fewer errors. “And as an added benefit, now when patients have a question, we have the answer locally,” she said. As the only ophthalmology practice in the Valley, Dale believes her business has a responsibility to the local community. “We regularly participate in community events to help increase awareness about eye health,” she said. “I purposely chose to live very close to the office so that I can be nearby in case of emergencies, and am a willing resource for the area primary care practitioners and emergency departments. Unlike many practices, we have not limited our care to only those patients with high-paying insurance plans.” Dale creatively balances her work and personal life. “My toddler knows right where the pretzels are in the office and loves to come play here,” she said. “It’s pretty common for me to bring him along when I see patients outside of normal business hours.” When she works on the first and third Saturday mornings of the month, her son and husband go swimming at the Si View Pool. “He’s having so much fun, he’s not missing me a bit,” Dale said. She does a lot of administrative work after

her son goes to bed at night. “I don’t know that there is any perfect balance for anyone, but we try to make time as a family for the things that are important — a walk, a trip to the zoo, dinner together — and we let some other things slide,” she said. Dale said she is happy to report that she has not felt any unique challenges as a woman in business. “The people in this area have been incredibly welcoming, and I absolutely love the community spirit that thrives in the Valley,” she said. Dale figures she has one of the most beautiful five-minute commutes in the nation. Dale encourages any young person who is thinking of going into medicine as a career. “There will always be a need for caring medical professionals,” she said. “I’d also encourage young medical entrepreneurs. We need creative thinkers working on how to provide both high quality care and cost-effective care in our country, and I believe there is still room for new ideas. “Finding a field that you are passionate about and creating a work environment in which you can fulfill that passion is truly a joy,” Dale added. “That kind of satisfaction has a value beyond financial gain.”

As mayor, Grumman looks forward employing her ability to facilitate conversation, which she feels is a great skill to have and something she’s always wanted to develop.

My interest in health, nutrition and alternative therapy and love of Reflexology led me to explore the field of Reflexology for work. After receiving my mastery certificate from Seattle Reflexology and Massage Center and becoming a Board Certified Reflexologist, I have worked with clients suffering from varied medical conditions. I believe strongly in the body’s ability to heal itself. I help facilitate that healing energy. It is a passion in my life to make people aware of the benefits of reflexology because I have been humbled by my own pain and love to assist others in relieving their pain. Reflexologists view the feet and hands as a mirror image of the body. By applying technique a reflexologist can break up patterns of stress in other parts of the body. Sensitive, trained hands can detect imbalances in the feet. By working on these areas of the feet, the reflexologist can release blockages and restore the free flow of energy to the whole body. The goal of reflexology is to re-educate, re-pattern and re-condition the nerves through the neural/electrical system of the body.

an infrastructure for its outdated water supply and keeping tabs on the newly-instituted branding committee. The committee is a group of stakeholders and city residents with backgrounds in marketing, business and the chamber of commerce. Members are meeting to research how Carnation is perceived by visitors. Not only a marketing tool to get Carnation on the map, Grumman said she’s looking for a brand that reflects what locals value. When not involved in Carnation politics, Grumman stays active in the city’s arts community and programs, plays music, gardens and goes out to build relationships between the people of Carnation.

As your REALTOR, my focus is to successfully achieve your goals - whether it is to purchase your dream home, sell an existing property or locate an investment property. Buying and selling a home is one of the biggest events in your life. As part of the Cook Real Estate Team, I can and will put my resources, experience and my expertise to work for you. I pride myself on my ethics, integrity and customer service. I treat each transaction as if it were my own. I am detail oriented and know that addressing the needs & concerns of my clients in a timely way is the most direct way of assuring a smooth & successful transaction. I provide my clients with the information they need and ongoing communication throughout the entire buying or selling process. I have lived in the area my entire life, growing up in Renton/Issaquah, and then remaining in the area living in down town Seattle, Kent, Maple Valley and now North Bend. My mother, Carole Sattler has been a Real Estate Sales Associate for 35 years so you could say it is in the blood. It is my goal to help you realize an extremely positive and enjoyable Real Estate experience. Your satisfaction is very important to me. fond of her new hometown, Grumman wanted to find out more about its development, regulations and how to move forward with its care, but without losing what was most important to the city. Aware of the city’s intentions to move forward in building a sewer system, Grumman joined the planning board in 2000. “I got involved because I was concerned about it,” Grumman said. “I wanted to find out what was going on, and like so many people in town, I love Carnation.” She ran for city council in 2007, and two years later she was chosen by fellow council members to replace previous mayor, Mike Flowers. I started this business with my dearest friend Frankie in 2000 and have been running it by myself since 2007. Retail business can be very rewarding and challenging. I have lived in this valley for 36 years and have seen so many changes and having a business in the valley is very much a big part of my life! I’m very much a people person and love the customers that shop my store! I find myself hearing stories and helping people all the time with their situations. I love it when people come in with a project that they need to do and I’m not only able to help them come up with a creative way to achieve their goals, but usually able to save them money with my creative ideas. I started the business with the idea of needing the supplies in the valley and have gotten much more out of it than just that! I have learned much about myself, my own abilities, and much about business; it has kept my mind always wanting to find more things that I can add to it to make things better. Thanks to all my customers!
