It was founded on April 21th, 1960, in order to serve as the new national capital. Brasília was planned and developed by Mr. Lúcio Costa and Mr. Oscar Niemeyer in 1956 in order to relocate the capital from Rio de Janeiro to a more central location. The landscape architect was Mr. Roberto Burle Marx. The design of the city divides itself into numbered blocks as well as sectors for specified activities, such as the Hotel Sector, the Banking Sector and the Embassy Sector. Brasília has been chosen as a UNESCO World Heritage because of its modernist architecture and uniquely artistic urban planning. The city has a unique status in Brazil, as an administrative division instead of a legal municipality like other cities in Brazil. Nationally, the term is almost always used as a synonymous “The Federal District”, which constitutes an indivisible Federative Unit. Several satellite cities are also part of the Federal District. The centers of all three branches of the federal government of Brazil are in Brasília, including the Congress, President, and Supreme Court. The city also hosts 135 foreign embassies. Brasília International Airport connects the capital to all major Brazilian cities and many international destinations, and is the second busiest airport in Brazil. SECTORIZATION – About the structure and the road system, the city has defined large areas of preferential or exclusive use. In addition to the monumental and residential areas were distinguished specific sectors. In the case of the central area , the specifics wanted to provide the right order , or preference , to ensure adequate space to the functions and activities that they knew to be essential to city life . This means that the Commercial Sector needs not be only commercial, but rather commercial, as well as at other sectors . SCALES - The four scales are present in all areas of the Pilot Plan, always there the dominance of one of them , but with all of those combined. The maintenance of the Brasilia Pilot Plan will be ensured by preserving the characteristics of scale.
