Johnson Space Center Office of STEM Engagement 2020 Highlights (October 1, 2019 – September 30, 2020)

INSIDE FRONT COVER OF REPORT Right Side Page of the Spread: Left Side Page of the Spread: Overview As Johnson Space Center (JSC) continues to lead human spaceflight endeavors with its missions, the JSC Office of STEM Engagement (JOSTEM) is poised to inspire a new generation of explorers to reach greater heights. Our next giant leap, the Artemis program, will send humans to the Moon in 2024 and pave the way to Mars. Students and educators are our explorers, and we are paving the way to increase knowledge among stakeholders and expand our reach outside of traditional audiences. JOSTEM’s activities attract students and educators from across the nation, but there is also a keen focus on engagement to specifically serve Texas and our local community. This year none of us were immune to the effects of the pandemic sweeping the nation, and we all worked together to adapt to the new normal. We are so proud of our students and educators for rising to the occasion and accepting our safety measure of updating our activities to virtual formats which allowed even more participation than planned. INSIDE BACK COVER OF THE REPORT

Left Side Page of the Spread: (Overall FY20 By the Numbers data goes here; totaled up from number of students, teachers, community members, social media followers, etc. reached by each activity)

Right Side Page of the Spread: What’s Next? Our nation has shown its impeccable endurance for keeping the good work going in whatever way possible during this difficult year. NASA is still laser-focused on going to our lunar neighbor to build outposts in the uncharted territory while revolutionizing the strategies and technologies that will eventually open up the universe and improve life here on Earth. JOSTEM works to ensure America’s young people are excited about their space program and are knowledgeable about our nation’s work in air and space. Through our efforts, we mobilize students to pursue STEM careers and help them forge paths towards becoming scientists, engineers, astronauts, explorers, and stewards of humankind.

Management quote about looking forward*: *Debbie’s quote from last year is included below as an example. For this year, we were considering a quote from Cindy about how going virtual during COVID opened up opportunities for more students, and how she is proud of the team for adapting. Open to whatever you want to include though! “As a nation, we still have a lot of work to do to get more students — particularly women and minorities — in the STEM pipeline. We need to continually develop the next generation of STEM students and instill in them the skillset to help us take the next steps from the Moon and on to Mars.” Deborah A. Conder, Director, JSC External Relations Office (2019)
