LEADING THE WAY 2014 Annual Report

VISION
Letter from the
Chief Executive Officer In 2014, we continued to implement our vision “Leading the way because every life counts™”. We surpassed our goal for live release and saved 7,803 dogs, cats, rabbits and various pocket pets. We also saw over 47,000 owned animals at our full-service hospital. We obtained the first American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) accreditation for a non-profit hospital in the State of Florida. Less than 15% of animal hospitals in the United States are AAHA certified and this was a huge honor for us and the work that we perform every day. We made our shelter animals more comfortable in 2014. We constructed a cat lanai and a new rabbit enclosure so that our cats, as well as rabbits, do not have to be housed in small cages while they wait for adoption. I can’t say enough about the wonderful staff and volunteers who come every day and make the animals’ stay at our shelter less stressful and more pleasant until they get their second chance. And, for the pit bulls and bully breeds, we enlisted the help of Victor Hedman, Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman, to do a PSA about these wonderful dogs. We will continue this year to do everything we can to help save the lives of animals in Tampa Bay. On behalf of the staff and volunteers, thank you for your support. We couldn’t do it without you.
Sherry Silk, Chief Executive Officer
Letter from the
Board President

In addition to the life-saving accomplishments Sherry mentioned, 2014 was an important year for expanding our partnerships with community organizations. One example is our work with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Not only did they help us promote pit bull adoptions but they graciously honored me as the 38th Lightning Community Hero of the Year at their April 5th home game and donated $50,000 to our animals. They also provide us with volunteers on a regular basis to help with shelter projects and animal care. Partnerships such as these are crucial to the success of our core programs such as sheltering and adoptions, free food assistance, Animeals, free shot clinics and affordable veterinary care. We are so very grateful.
Another integral component to our success is commitment to fiscal responsibility and adherence to best business practices. I am proud to say that for the sixth consecutive year, the Humane Society of Tampa Bay was awarded Charity Navigator’s highest honor, the 4-Star rating. This amazing accomplishment is a rarity. Many charities achieve two or three consecutive years of the rating, but to go beyond that is truly a testament to our practice of good governance and transparency. As supporters of our life-saving work, you can rest assured that your generosity is treated responsibly and with the utmost respect. In fact, 89¢ of every dollar you give goes directly to our programs, helping to save the lives of animals. On behalf of the Board of Directors and the Advisory Council, thank you for your continued support. You share in our success.

INITIATIVE SAVING LIVES through humane, aggressive, proven TRAP/NEUTER/VACCINATE/RETURN The humane trapping, sterilization, vaccination and return of unowned, freeroaming cats is the only method shown to stabilize cat populations.
IN 2014 6,385 community and feral cats were humanely trapped, sterilized, immunized and returned to their neighborhoods to live out their lives.
TO DATE Since beginning our TNVR program in 2007, 4,872 feral colonies, representing 25,327 cats, have been tracked in a county-wide database maintained by our staff.

INNOVATION
USING INNOVATION
to provide enrichment and socialization for shelter animals
ENRICHMENT
We work hard to ensure that the animals in our care are mentally, emotionally and physically enriched through play, socialization and human contact. These two new additions help us achieve this goal for our cats and rabbits.
RABBIT RESORT A serene spot for our adoptable bunnies to hop, burrow, nibble and play in the fresh air and sun.
Opened February 2014
CAT LANAI A specially designed indoor/outdoor lounge where our adoptable cats can sleep in sunbeams, perch on ledges, and prowl in passageways.

For the sixth consecutive year, the Humane Society of Tampa Bay has been awarded a 4-Star rating by Charity Navigator. Receiving four out of a possible four stars indicates that the Society adheres to good governance and other best practices that minimize the chance of unethical activities and consistently executes its mission in a fiscally responsible way.
