LETTER FROM THE CEO

“Molly”, the beautiful, senior stray black lab on our cover, is just one example of the thousands of animals that we take care of each year. We chose her picture, with the drawing of the new building beneath her, because we are finally close to breaking ground and she exemplifies why we need a new shelter. We have been exploring the feasibility of such an undertaking for several years and now we are ready to make it happen. The new 42,000 sq ft, multi-story facility will nearly double our capacity for dogs. All of our animals will be housed in air conditioning and we will have isolation rooms to house any sick animals as well as nurseries for our underage puppies and kittens. Last year we took in more than 9,400 stray and owner-surrendered pets. We had to turn away several thousand because we did not have the space for them and we do not euthanize animals to make room for others. This new shelter will allow us to take in more homeless animals and help them find homes. I want to personally thank Thomas Everett Lamb as he has donated the design for this facility. He really loves animals and both he and architect Kevin Hart have taken great care to make sure that the animals will be safely housed in a much more comfortable, healthy, environment; I can’t thank them enough. I am also equally grateful to the extremely generous DeBartolo Family and the hundreds of others who have already donated to make this dream a reality. If you haven’t already done so, please help us raise the remaining funds that we need to get a new shelter built. And, by the way, “Molly” found her new home thanks to all of your support. For the animals,

ANIMAL HOSPITAL FEATURE

When Kim Ligoci found Sunny wandering a country road overheated, emaciated, and suffering from an eye injury she could not leave him. She gently scooped him up and took him home to receive "lots of love and three meals a day". During his exam at our animal hospital, it was quickly evident that he was near the end of his life; his heart was failing from advanced heartworms, his ears and skin were severely infected, and his eye injury left him blind. The cost to care for him was too high for the family but we were determined to help this brave dog who had endured tremendous neglect and suffering. Our SaveA-Pet fund helped provide treatment for his skin and ears, and palliative care to keep the seven-year-old pup comfortable for as long as he had left. Although sad to know his time with her family would be short, Kim said gratefully, "Now we can do whatever it takes to make Sunny's remaining days much happier than his beginning." And they did. After just a couple of months with his new family Sunny crossed the Rainbow Bridge peacefully, loved, and in the arms of his angel. Rest in Peace, sweet Sunny.

Ms. Marousis was distraught when her beloved "Mommy Kitty" became gravely ill with Pyometra. As a senior citizen she didn't know how she would afford the surgery needed to save her companion's life. Our Save-A-Pet Fund was established for cases just like this and we immediately took action to save Momma Kitty. In this case, however, it wasn't the animal who needed care "until the end". When given the news that we could help, here is what Ms. Marousis had to say: "I don't know what I would've done without the Humane Society ... I'm in the end stages of kidney failure and I've already lost one kidney ... but my cat, Mommy Kitty, she keeps me fighting to live." Our affordable, full-service, AAHA-accredited Animal Hospital is open to the public and any proceeds benefit our homeless pets at the shelter. There are no income requirements but our SaveA-Pet fund does have limited availability. If you would like to contribute to this fund to help more pets like Sunny and Momma Kitty, visit: HumaneSocietyTampa.org/save-a-pet Humane Society of Tampa Bay

Since 1912 we have faithfully served the homeless companion animals of the Tampa Bay area and beyond. For nearly three quarters of a century, we have sheltered and cared for hundreds of thousands of animals in the same building on N. Armenia Avenue in Tampa (built in 1959). Marked expansion in our programs, services and community outreach has left our facility antiquated and unable to meet our needs (examples on pages 10 and 11). Simply put, we have outgrown our space and walls are literally crumbling around us. While we celebrate the growth of our vibrant community we cannot ignore its voiceless citizens whose needs have kept pace with expansion. As a community, it is our job to Shelter Them. They won't survive without us. Photos courtesy of the DeBartolo Family

Thanks to the generosity of the following entities who share our passion for animals, a new, improved shelter for our animals is possible. NAMING RIGHTS The DeBartolo Family has long served the Tampa Bay community through benevolent funding. They also consider their pets to be part of the family, and did not hesitate to support our project with a substantial gift towards naming rights.

ISOLATION FOR SICK AND TRAUMATIZED PETS

Hi, I'm Molly and I am featured on the cover and page 6! That's because my story has a happy ending. But that wasn't always the case. I knew my chances of finding a home were slim, I had the dreaded trifecta of "unadoptable" traits: a senior, large breed with dark coloring. The shelter I was taken to was completely full and my fate seemed grim. But then I was put on a truck and transferred to the Humane Society of Tampa Bay, a place where they do their best to help old guys and gals like me.

Do you know what it's like to be unwanted? To find yourself abandoned and alone, then in and out of shelters? It's traumatizing. My name is Mousey and when I finally made it to the Humane Society of Tampa Bay, my nerves were frazzled. I didn't know my place, or who I could trust. And although the people there were kind and gave me plenty of food, affection, and places to hide, the buzz of the shelter upset me. I became stressed, then depressed, then ill.

During my wonderful stay at HSTB I noticed how few large kennels there were and felt so grateful to have come at the right time when one was open. Surprisingly, I didn't have to stay too long before finding a home.

My shelter friends were so compassionate, and very worried about me, so they moved me to their adoption program at PetSmart. It was so much quieter there and I was able to settle. Away from the hustle and bustle I recovered, came out of my shell, and found a loving home.

My forever family now tells me that my friends at HSTB are trying to build a new shelter, one that will have twice as many kennels for large dogs. I'm all wags over the news! I'm thankful every day to have been one of the lucky ones and I worry about the many others out there who need help. Don't you? 10 Fall Fall 10

2018 Making Making Tracks Tracks 2018

It's too bad that HSTB didn't have a quiet place for me because I really loved the people there. The good news is that they are going to build a new shelter with isolation areas for pets who are sick or depressed. Not only will the dedicated space help to stop the spread of illness, but animals like me will be able to heal in peace and quiet.

CENTRAL HEATING AND AIR Hello, I'm Scrappy. I'm not going to lie, I had it pretty good when I was at HSTB. Maybe I was too young to know the difference, I thought I had hit the jackpot! I had all the food I could eat, lots of nice people to hold me, play with me, and love me, plus I had toys to tug and shake! Truth be told though, as nice as it was, there were times when it got really hot. On those days I would try to be still and pant as fast as I could, but it didn't help much. Thankfully we had fans, coolers, and misters along with my favorite contraptions, the petcicles! I don't know what they were but our human friends called them "frozen water bottles". What I do know is that I'd lay on one and fall into a deep, blissful sleep as my body cooled. How smart those people were! I was adopted quickly and now I live in a big house that is always nice and cool because of air conditioning. I heard my mom talking about a NEW shelter where the entire building, including all of the cages, will be climate controlled! She said it will be safer, easier to maintain, and much more energy efficient! I don't understand what all that means but I think it has something to do with never needing those petcicles again.

NURSERIES FOR UNDER-AGE PUPPIES AND KITTENS Howdy, we're the Fab Four! At least, that's what the nice people at the HSTB Animal Hospital called us! We came in on a "TNVR Monday" but because we didn't weigh enough to be sterilized and vaccinated, we were taken to the shelter "to wait for a foster". Our shelter friends were so nice and their food was delicious; we were happy as clams. After a few days they found us a "foster mom" who let us ride in her car and live in her house! We adored our Foster Mom and her silly, gentle dog. They were patient and kind and taught us how to be proper kittens. We eventually went back to the shelter for surgery and didn't stay long before finding our forever families. We heard through the catnip vine that our old friends are building a new shelter where they will have "nurseries" for other kittens and puppies who need a few weeks to grow before being adopted. This is great news because we know we were fortunate to have gotten a foster. Not all are as lucky; there are simply more underage litters than there are foster homes to take them. With nurseries in the new shelter, our friends will be able to help many more little ones in need. Between fosters and the nursery, thousands of additional young lives will be saved. VOLUNTEERING

For any of you who don’t know, summer in Florida is kitten season, and hundreds and hundreds of underage kittens come through our doors over the course of the summer months. Since we are right in the middle of kitten season, it is a perfect time to honor one of our fantastic foster parents who is always there to take on kittens that are not old enough to be adopted so they can grow up and receive socialization in a loving home. Christine has been a kitten foster for us for the last year, and in that time she has donated over 1,400 hours of her time to raising underage kittens for us! She is always ready to take on any situation – huge litters, super young kittens, and even those with special medical conditions. As soon as Christine brings a litter back to us, she is begging for another one! It gives us such peace of mind knowing that we have wonderful foster parents like Christine caring for our littlest shelter animals.

ADOPTIONS & ALUMNI UPDATES

Animals are one of the most precious things in life. 17 years ago, Minna was adopted from us and she brought so much joy to her family. Our hearts were broken to hear that she crossed the rainbow bridge but we so appreciated these wonderful pictures her family sent us to honor her memory. It brings comfort to know she lived a very long and happy life with her family, a life full of wonderful memories. Minna will always be in both her family's heart and in ours.

Our beloved Mac (left) was adopted! He was one of our Dolly's Dream Dogs, which means he is a "bully breed" and his adoption came with three in-home trainings and lots of other goodies to help him acclimate to his new home! Even better? Now that Mac has been adopted, he has a doggie sister who is also an HSTB Alumni. What a perfect family for him!

Gator was rescued by a kind woman who was able to talk to the neglectful owners, who had tied his jaw shut, into giving him up. His injury was too much for her to handle so she brought him to us. The wound on his mouth was deep and infected, but we were able to heal him through surgical intervention and powerful antibiotics. And although he'll have a scar for the rest of his life, he's still such a beautiful boy! After a few weeks of recovery this fluffy sweetheart found his forever home and is doing WONDERFUL! He is so very loved and fits in with the family perfectly. His favorite thing to do is to visit his mom's grandkids. He's a wonderful companion and guardian of his new "flock".

I wanted to provide an update on a couple of animals we adopted from you. Last August we adopted King (dog, now named Thor) and he immediately made himself at home. We decided he needed a friend, and adopted Henry (kitten, now named Tony) in June. They are already the best of friends and sleep together every chance they get. We love them both so very much. We are so thankful to have adopted such wonderful and loving furbabies. ~Kathryn Timmons Humane Society of Tampa Bay

OUTREACH AND EVENTS

We were both honored and humbled when Grey2K and the Humane Society of the United States asked us, "one of the most influential animal welfare organization in Florida" to host their press conference announcing a historical initiative, Protect Dogs - Yes on 13 on June 4th. The grassroots campaign seeks to end Greyhound racing in Florida by educating Florida voters about the horrors of this industry and convincing them to vote Yes on Amendment 13 this Sherry Silk, CEO (at podium, left) and State Senator Dana Young (at podium, right) open the press conference on June 4. November. Should the amendment pass, Greyhound racing will be phased out by 2022 saving thousands of dogs from lives in cages and deaths on the tracks. Shelters and rescue groups across the United States (including HSTB!) stand ready to shelter and adopt out the nearly 8,000 dogs currently suffering in the racing industry. The opponents - Greyhound breeders - have filed a lawsuit with the State Supreme Court to try and have the amendment removed from the ballet. However, we are hopeful that the realities of the industry along with the strong support of the public, the court will make the right decision for dogs. For more information visit ProtectDogs.org ŠTampa Bay Lightning

Our animals are fortunate to have the generous support of the community and beyond. Whether hanging with hockey players or rocking out with bands, our homeless pets know how to turn on the charm and win hearts. The Tampa Bay Lightning's Steven Stamkos and the Lightning Foundation visited us in June to present a check for $50,000. The funds were raised through the sales of their 2018 Barks and Bolts Pet Calendar that featured players posing with their own pets and some of our adoptables. Thank you to Steven and Sandra Stamkos, Victor and Sanna Hedman, the Bolts Better Halves, all the Lightning players and the entire organization for their friendship. A month later, our pets found themselves in the limelight once again when they visited with band members from 30 Seconds to Mars and Walk The Moon. Some of our dogs were invited to MidFlorida Amphitheatre's Green Room to visit with the bands and help them relax before the performance. A great time was had by all and the concert was a huge success, thanks in part to the pre-show inspiration the performers received. 2018 COLUMBIA COMMUNITY HARVEST September 1 - 30, 2018 All Columbia Restaurant Locations 14 Fall

Tawny is just one of thousands of animals we save every year. She came to us as a stray and was never reclaimed by her owner. Lucky for her, we had an open window sill in our cat lanai and were able to care for her and bring her comfort during the month she waited for a new home. In our new shelter we'll be able to take in nearly 2,000 more animals every year. Just like Tawny, they'll find safe haven and a second chance. Help us build the DeBartolo Family Animal Shelter:
