GRAMMY AWARD NOMINEE DR. CHUCK OWEN DISTINGUISHED UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR OF JAZZ STUDIES Chuck Owen’s most recent album with his band The Jazz Surge, was nominated for four GRAMMY Awards. Whispers on the Wind received three nominations for Owen in the categories of Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album, Best Instrumental Composition, and Best Arrangement. Another went to violinist Sara Caswell in the category of Best Improvised Jazz Solo.
GRAMMY AWARD WINNER MELISSA SALGUERO MUSIC EDUCATION ALUMNI, 2009 Melissa Salguero is the 2018 GRAMMY Music Educator Award Winner due to the outstanding work she has done at P.S. 48 Elementary School in the Bronx, NY over the past seven years. When Melissa began working at P.S. 48 - in the heart of one of New York’s poorest neighborhoods - the school had no instruments, so she just grabbed her guitar and started singing “Don’t Stop Believing.” Since that time her students have flocked to her classes, and some have gone on to study in prestigious performing arts high schools. She is a remarkable teacher and a source of pride for our profession.
GRANT AWARD WINNER DR. JENNIFER BUGOS ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF MUSIC EDUCATION Jennifer Bugos, in collaboration with Dr. Jerri Edwards, has received a grant of $2.25 million from the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute on Aging to study how music training may improve cognitive abilities in older adults who are non-musicians. An ultimate goal is to be able to delay dementia by intervening with music.
