f it's not about the destination, it's about the journey - then I'd venture to say your journey probably hasn't taken you over the 4th Street Bridge lately. It is a pedestrian bridge located between Branner and Lafayette, which is a main thoroughfare for pedestrians, bicycles and cars. It also carries a school bus, transporting students to the nearby Scott Dual Language Magnet School. And while you might think a bridge is just a bridge - it isn't. The concrete structure is covered with graffiti and illicit phrases urging young minds to negate authority. This is what they see as they journey to school, where minds are molded and supposed to learn the tools to achieve their dreams. The neighborhood, East Topeka North, has seen an explosion of vandalism and crime in recent years. It's no secret that one way to curb vandalism is through a community grassroots effort that involves area residents. ARTSConnect is attuned to this fact, which is why they teamed up with the City of Topeka. Together they decided to become one of the first cities in the country to attempt the painting of a structure such as the 4th Street Bridge. Challenge factors in the project were wind, traffic and sun.

This is lead artist Jamie ColĂ&#x201C;n's seventh mural with ARTSConnect, with an assist from Raul HLuz, who painted the graffiti-style "east side" designs which appear on the pedestrian side of both sides of the bridge. The traffic side of the bridge displays a honeycomb pattern. aseveneightfive

ARTSConnect has formed a partnership with the Topeka Police Department, Safe Streets Coalition and Downtown Topeka, Inc. to make Topeka a safer, more vibrant, prosperous place to live. The first mural, dedicated on June 7, 2013, is located at 1120 NE Seward and was designed by Jamie Colon and Maria Guzman and painted by more than 50 community members. h the horror (said in my best Fran Drescher voice and attire), what to wear this Halloween season. If I'm a sexy cat (not as in Cat Woman but kitty-cat with a short skirt) one more time, I might lick myself to the ninth life. And furthermore, this pressure to find the balance between hot costume and smart costume has me wondering, is it truly acceptable for adults to dress up for Halloween? I'm sure this question could be debated for as long there is no trick-or-treating age limit. But despite what side of the broom I sit on, one thing is for sure, Topeka bars love Halloween parties and seveneightfivers love to dress up. The Halloween guises vary from year to year, but putting much consideration into the evening's wardrobe is a constant. It's not enough to just pick a noun and preface it with the word sexy. e.g. sexy lobster, sexy Chewbacca, sexy ferret; and adults need be mindful of cultural appropriation (think sexy Indian Chief). I think it's most important to consider the implications of 1,000 Facebook views of the photo of you as the human centipede. Now, I'm not trying to be Debby Downer (sorry, I forgot to insert the word sexy) but I do applaud those who make the commitment to dress up for the so-called holiday with a little imagination and wit. A Sylvia Plath or Bat Woman costume not only triggers a conversation but allows me to judge a book by its cover, and I dig it. (Bat Woman is the highest-profile gay superhero to appear in stories published by DC Comics.) As the weekend of shenanigans approaches, so does my own personal searching for a costume. I tossed out the notion of the sexy toast costume and wracking my brain for a witty costume has exhausted me. Alas, I've fallen victim to the third type of adult costume - the famous person. This brought me to an idea - if imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, what if Topeka's top costumes where Top-Iconic folks? aseveneightfive

NOTABLE: Rayon Boyd, CEO of Sticky Green Records, is known for hustling records out of the trunk of a car. Over a dozen albums from multiple artists have made Sticky Green Records a true indie label selling almost a million albums out of trunks. THE LOOK: Sticky Green Records represents several rappers. Hairball is a rock 'n' roll experience you won't soon forget, at least, that's what the band boasts and what fans who saw them at Sturgis cough up. Top it off with screaming hoards of rabid Hairball fans, the event will hit you hard and it'll take a few days to recover from this throat puncher. The band is lead by vocalists Bobby, Steven and Joe Dandy who take you on a mind-blowing, accurate homage to some of the greatest including Van Halen, KISS, Motley Crue, Queen, Journey, Aerosmith and many more. But don't confuse Hairball with the countless "80s tribute" bands, Hairball is an event; an attitude and expression of music and showmanship that isn't retro-flashback. The motor that drives the Hairball dragster consists of Freaky on the electric bass, Blake on the drums and Happy on the lead guitar. The trio pride themselves on nailing some of the most memorable licks. "Today is the first day of the rest of your life," Happy often tells audiences. For the '80s lover, this season is one to pay attention to. (Perhaps it's your year to become a season member?) Collectively the theatres are producing three shows that are musts for any fan.

The creators and curators of GabLocal TV are talking about you to make sure that Top City keeps talking about you. Brothers, Frank and Chris Schultz, and new partner in crime, Cole Harrington, are working overtime to identify and archive history in Topeka as it happens, in the present. There's a reason it's called the present, and knowing what's going on and what's just around the corner is these gentlemen's specialty. Funded by family efforts through The Break Room and Field of Greens, two popular Topeka eateries located downtown, the brothers Schultz and Harrington feed their drive to spread the word about current and future goings on about town. They truly do have the gift of gab. Nota bene: this is not playground gab or gossip, this is ebullient, enthusiastic banter and information that can get you to all the great events and businesses fueling a veritable renaissance in Topeka, on both sides of the mighty Kansas River. According to Cole, Chris, and Frank as we talked in the studio at Nathan Ham Photography, GabLocal TV focuses on five categories. With Champions of Character, Making Main Street, Connecting the Arts, Food Flair and Fun, and the Schultz Show,

GabLocal TV covers the gamut of what’s happening in Top City. Within those five categories are a range of programs available to view through the GabLocal TV website. Chris Schultz, speaking about the options available to them as broadcasters of local programming, spoke with enthusiasm of what media has become. Gesturing to a smartphone, Chris says, “If you want to communicate, you need to get into someone’s pocket wherever they are in the world.” By making their programs available online, GabLocal TV can do just that. But they have other ways to reach their growing audience. Friday mornings on WIBW 13’s Weekend Fun Forecast during the 6a broadcast, Chris appears as “Fake Meteorologist, Real Event Promoter” to give the viewing audience a heads up on the goings on about town for the weekend. The objective of Gab Local TV is to provide community promotions today and preservation of those events for tomorrow. They approach their work with high production, multi-camera recordings to bring together more than a single view or slice of topics they promote and archive. Now, obviously they cannot cover everything that’s happened in the past two years, but what they have been around to record and promote creates a very detailed picture of Topeka. From the work that’s gone on to improve downtown Topeka’s Kansas Avenue, social activities at Topeka Civic Theatre and a

summer concert series at Topeka Performing Arts Center, to the efforts of Loud Light and The Equality House, GabLocal TV is talking about you, baby. There was an opportunity for the group to step away from the focus on their hometown and reach the larger broadcast markets to the east. But after consideration, they have chosen to maintain their focus and efforts on the city of Topeka. n impromptu surprise 50th birthday party for a girlfriend led me to Crooked Post Winery in Ozawkie where I learned the magnitude of wineries Kansas has to offer. Sure, as the owner of seveneightfive, I knew about a few wineries scattered around the area including our friends (and past features) at Prairie Fire Winery and Wyldewood Cellars. I've had the pleasure of visiting Holy-field Vineyard and Winery about six years ago after winning silent auction items at A Night of Wine and Roses for The American Cancer Society. And I've been saying I'd stop at Oz Winery for years when I travel to Manhattan to meet our accountant, although it never seems like a good idea, mixing wine and accounting. But what got my tannins wet was when I laid my eyes on an oversized, nine-panel accordionfolded map that listed 27 Kansas Farm Wineries, three different wine trails and a passport game to encourage wine enthusiasts to visit all the locations (like you really had to give us winos a game, but, thank you). "If I don't know about this, I guarantee there are readers who don't know," I told my friend. Thus the Saturday impromptu celebration also became a tangible excuse for us to try every wine at Crooked Post (again, not a necessity, but thanks for the push).

GLACIAL HILLS WINE TRAIL Consists of four wineries in a region created long ago when the glaciers receded north; leaving behind a unique, scenic landscape of rolling, wooded hills and valleys with clear, running streams. This creates a unique soil type found nowhere else in Kansas. You can see and taste the difference. Each winery is approximately 20 to 25 minute drive from each other. In order to visit each winery in one given day, your trip must be on a Saturday or Sunday, the only corresponding hours. Make reservations at Jefferson Hill for dinner.

Inspired by Italian architecture and wine, Kevin and Lori Henderson opened the winery in 2014 and pride themselves on staying true to the grape (no manipulation). Using FrenchAmerican hybrid grapes, wines are hand-crafted on site and customers are invited to help with the harvest and crush every Saturday morning in September.

Boasts eight grape varieties from white Vignoles to red Noiret. Enjoy wines from their patio and take in the inspiring vantage point of the valley and picturesque country views.

Glaciers Edge A growing vineyard consisting of eight varieties of grapes and nearly 3000 vines. Their tasting room / patio was opened in 2014 and their mission is to be positive ambassadors to our local wine, food and tourism industry.

Jefferson Hill Built in 1920, this previous dairy farm has been transformed into a KS farm winery, bed and breakfast. Wines are produced from estate grown grapes. Panoramic views of the beautiful countryside can be viewed from all areas inside the winery, their large covered veranda and gazebos. Make this your last stop and have dinner and stay the night.

s long as there have been politics, there have been writers and publishers working to affect change in the political landscape. Earlier this year, Microburst magazine continued that tradition by debuting a call to action for citizens and activists alike.

While the national media attention has been occupied this year by the circus sideshow that the presidential race has become, we Kansans have for the past several years been dealing with our own problems in governance. The takeover of both the executive and legislative branches by the extreme right in Kansas has led to numerous issues in education, infrastructure, social services, health care and even the arts. These statewide problems forced by political extremists are the main focus of what Microburst hopes to address. “I realized going out to protest here that so few people were involved, and so many people were angry. If you go into the gas station and talk to the clerk, everyone’s angry about what’s going on, but so few people were participating in resisting it and voting against it,” said Davis Hammet, an activist who was part of the team to bring Microburst to fruition. “What I realized is that until we get an educated and engaged citizenry that really demands better people to represent them, we can’t realize the changes that we know are necessary.” This, of course, is where Microburst attempts to make its mark. Noticing the culture of arts activists emerging out of Governor Sam Brownback’s early decision to cut funding for arts in Kansas, Leah Sewell decided to take that disappointment and

frustration and funnel it into a concerted effort to make a change. Using her knowledge of the local publishing industry [Sewell is the former editorin- chief of seveneightfive], and recalling her youth in Chicago, picking up DIY zines in record stores, Sewell gathered a group of writers and artists, acquired a Rocket Grant from the Charlotte Street Foundation and Spencer Museum of Art, and pieced together a political 'zine that premiered publicly in Lawrence at the end of April. “We’re trying to create a voice for change where people are receptive to change, help find some solidarity where their votes really matter. We don’t want to just preach to the choir,” said Sewell. “At this point there’s nothing like it in Kansas. For this time and what’s going on right now, there’s nothing like this concerted effort to publish an opposition and use a citizen voice against the conservative takeover in the way that Microburst is.”

In the meantime, Microburst has been joined in their fight against the extreme right by a number of organizations and movements also working for change. For instance, the Kansas Coalition for Gun Free Campuses has emerged to argue against the

dangerous and ill-conceived decision to allow concealed carry of weapons on public college campuses across the state, set to take effect next July. Microburst and its associated movements have already seen the results of their efforts, as a number of far right incumbents in the state and national legislatures were defeated in the August primaries by more moderate voices, and for the first time in several decades, every single congressional race across the state will be contested in the November election. The work of these organizations is only beginning, however. “I think we can take the progressive voices from the artists and writers in this state, and with the activist history we have back to the abolitionists and Bleeding Kansas, we can show to the nation that we have something to contribute and we’re going to help move the nation into a more inclusive future,” said Sewell. “Kansas can be part of the conversation about improving social services, women’s rights, equal rights for LGBTQ people.”

3.7 Fists t is a cloudy day and my senses are alert and keen. I sidle along the wall toward the entrance of The Famous Door wherein lies Thelma’s Soulfood Corner. This will be a difficult battle and I must remain vigilant if I am to overcome my enemy…

FRIENDLINESS

I am greeted before I even enter! A smiling face, three rather, and a jaunty hello are the first blow of this battle delivered with stunning ferocity. I am stunned and must stumble inside, eliminating my element of surprise. Upon entry I am greeted once again and promptly waited on.

ATMOSPHERE

A little confusing - a mix of diner, bar, and lounge. The amalgam of décor makes for an interesting, but not off-putting aesthetic. Splashes of charm jump out such as the retro-look barstools and low profile lounge seating lending an air of class. But then there is the pleasing aroma of soul food - Kapow!

This menu delivers a roundhouse kick of options. A stellar selection of soul food to satisfy any ninja’s palate. Traditional sides and entrées of the soulful variety and a few extras in the mix. There is no shortage of tastes to be experienced here but the amount of choice is not overwhelming.

NINJA’S RECOMMENDATION

FOOD

I opt for the chicken dinner to fill my ninja belly. Generous helpings of four wings, 8oz sides, and cornbread are enough to satisfy the hunger of a ninja. The slaw is creamy, the chicken falls off the bone and the cornbread melts in your mouth. The breading on the chicken does tend to get dry but the meat is succulent and helps the delicate balance.

FUNDS

For ten dollars I am able to procure this ninja sized meal, which regrettably defeated me and I am humbly left with reserves for another meal. Prices range from around $10 to $14 and the helpings are well worth the doubloons. My purse is lighter, my belly is full. I will return again, to challenge my foe on another front… ribs. But for now I will fall back and regain my strength for the next battle. Take heed my fellow ninjas, Thelma’s Soulfood Corner is a force to be reckoned with and will most certainly see my ninja skills again! aseveneightfive
