THE TORCH | SENIOR EDITION
thank you, seven lakes I
t’s been a quite the journey these past four years. That holds true not only for us, as we close out four wonderful years as a part of the Torch, but for every senior that will be walking across the stage on June 8. Regardless of whether you spent four years, one year, or even just two months in the Spartan hallways, there is a special quality to our final academic weeks here that will cause Seven Lakes to have an indelible hold over our memory. This is the end of our adolescence: senior year is the culmination of years of work and effort, a direct launching point into a realm of uncertainty. Both of us remember starting our freshman year from similar points of uncertainty. We didn’t know what classes to take, whether we would make our sports teams, who our friends be - we simply didn’t know.
We have art students whose paintings are selling for more than ever before at rodeos and fairs. We have athlete after athlete signing to play the realm of collegiate athletics. We have talented musicians and actors, unicyclists and triathlon runners. Whatever we are, we do it well. We came into Seven Lakes still unsure of who we were, what we wanted to be, but we’ll come out as graduates - the prize being that diploma Teddy V hands us as we walk across the stage. Some of us may become biomedical engineers, some of us may become hard-hitting journalists, some of us may end up working at McDonalds - who knows? Nonetheless, we owe it to our teachers, our parents, and most importantly - ourselves - to use what we have learned in high school and take it to the real world. Use it to change, to inspire, and benefit each other in our communities across the globe. In this area of educational emphasis, we have all the tools necessary for success. And we have Seven Lakes to thank for that.
Yet, that uncertainty is what drove us and many of our peers to reach beyond what is expected, to find ways to make ourselves stand out in a never-ending crowd of students. The Class of 2014 seems to continually break the mold, in more ways than one.

with Emi Gonzalez
Creating the promo video for the run, Will Van Hoozer adds a little color.
Emi Gonzalez, founder of the Color in Action, and future Harvard undergrad.
How did you get involved?
I’m actually the president and co-founder of Unite for Health and I wanted to start a major project for the year. We got the idea for the Color Run and picked Operation Smile because we wanted to help children with cleft palate.
How was organizing the run for the second time?
Cruising towards the Shweta Mohandas and finish line, Ben Ngalawa Manmitha Gundampalli help pass out water. keeps up his pace. Students capture the moment with a GoPro as they celebrate the end of the race.
It was difficult. There’s a lot of pressure on us from administration, but getting sponsors was a lot easier since people already knew about it. We wanted it to be bigger and better than last years.
What’s your favorite part of the run? I just liked seeing everyone so happy and the best part of doing it is donating the money after. This isn’t for us, it’s for the kids. We can give back to the community and to the people.
What has been the most rewarding experience of this organization?
Leadership: I gained a lot of leadership and I learned a lot about myself. You have to deal with a lot of people and talk with people who are older and make yourself seem that you’re that age.
Fondest senior memory?
Getting into Harvard since it was something I worked really hard for but tennis was also a huge part of my life here at school. The team, they’re all so cool. Plus I can’t wait for prom!

WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR THE 2014 CLASS PRESIDENT? bSince its construction, Seven Lakes has been shown to be the epitome of integrity and class. Our staff and students provide the structure for this integrity to thrive. However, one student in particular, senior class president Drew Goss has continuously upheld Seven Lakes’ excellence through his leadership. Initially inspired by a graduation speech during his freshman year, Goss decided to run for president and has held his position for three years. As president, Goss’ main duty was to organize prom and maintain the polished reputations of Seven Lakes and its senior class. Goss’ primary goal was to plan a memorable prom and represent his fellow classmates well. However, presiding over a class of over 900 students did not prove to be simple task. “The most difficult aspect of being president was representing all of the students of Katy ISD by speaking at the State of the District Address in front of a couple hundred adults,” said Goss. “It was very nerve-wracking for me.” Despite the usual worries of a leader, Goss is hopeful for the results of his efforts.
career,
“I’m pretty confident [prom] will be an unforgettable one,” said Goss. “Seven Lakes is seen as a school with high class and I believe I have represented our school well.” After graduation, Goss plans to major in Chemical Engineering at the University of Alabama. Originally, he did not plan on taking on any leadership roles during college, but with the encouragement of his friends, he hopes to continue his role in student government. In the future, Goss wishes to start a family and have a fulfilling career. Regarding an inspiring force in his life, Goss looks to his grandfather. “I want to be like my grandpa when I grow up,” said Goss. “He is still learning every day and is passionate about his family,
food,
and
travelling.”
As the final weeks of his high school career begin, Goss’ best memories are of football and Spartan Crazy games, Macho Man volleyball, and coaching Powderpuff Football. “I will miss all of the unique people I’ve been surrounded with for these past four years,” said Goss. “We’ve all grown fond of each other so it’ll be weird not being surrounded by them next year.” Experiencing high school in a leadership position has provided Goss with many life lessons. “This leadership role has taught me what it means to lead by example and to have high integrity,” said Goss. “I’ll remember these days for the rest of my life and I’m thankful for it all.” “One tip I would give is to become friends with people that build you up and challenge you to be a better person,” said Goss. “If not, cut them out of your life, even if it means being alone for a bit. I also realized that you can do well in any school subject if you put in the effort. To an extent, you are either a lazy person or a hard working person, not smart or stupid.”
