What’s your pleasure? Charlotte offers up plenty of choices for golfers

The beautiful part about visiting a place like North
you’ll never run out of interesting things to do and or places to play. And when you target the southern part of the state, particularly Charlotte, those choices may just include a lap or two down the asphalt fairway. This is of course NASCAR country. Carolina is
On the surface, mixing golf with stock cars might not seem like a logical combination for visitors to the greater Charlotte area, but making a stop over in Concord, NC, might not be such a bad idea for those who are even the slightest bit curious. Concord is home to the Lowes Motor Speedway which, for any NASCAR buff, is the cradle of their sport. Taking a tour of the facility offers a small glimpse into the sport adored by millions. Adrenaline junkies can check out AndrettiGordon.com for a chance to drive around Lowes’ track – either as a passenger or driver, depending on your budget – and explore what it’s like to tear up the blacktop.
destinationGOLF | 2008
For those less brave, there is always the opportunity to explore more than 90 per cent of the NASCAR team shops in the Charlotte area. Getting your ticket for that is easy, as there are a multitude of groups in the area that offer tours. Ok, seatbelts off, let’s gear down a little, pop the trunk and get out the clubs -- welcome to Olde Sycamore. Playing from the blue tees, you’re looking at 6398 yards (only 600 more from the back), with a slope rating of 130 and an overall rating of 70.9. This is the type of golf-community course that will test you in a number of ways – accuracy, patience, creativity and consistency.
Ballantyne Golf Club
Players will find their first true test when they reach the 4th hole, a charming 162-yard par three that has a water hazard guarding the front left side of the hole (along with a bunker tucked in at green’s edge). Take careful note of where your pin placement is – finding the right part of this two-tiered green with the tee shot is critical or you’ll easily be looking at three or more putts. You’ll also need to resist the urge to pound away with your drive on many of the holes or else risk the potential of penalty strokes. That risk-reward decision is no more apparent than what you’ll find on Hole #9 – just 413 yards off the blues, but a downgrade towards a water hazard which lays 100 yards from the green means any extra carry to a 260-yard tee shot will put your ball in harm’s way. Olde Sycamore is perfect for the guys to take off for the afternoon and play 18, but if the special lady in your life is looking to join you for the outing and isn’t keen on golf, perhaps the Ballantyne Resort would be better suited. With three tee box choices for both men and women, Ballantyne offers up 18 holes of resort style golf that wind their through the outer reaches of greater Charlotte.
Deception is the name of the game on some of the course’s tougher holes, as they don’t ‘appear’ to be as long as what you’re reading on the score card. Playing off the blue tees offers the average player a good challenge while not proving to be too intimidating at 6600 yards. The front nine is pretty playable without too many worries – Hole #5 requires left-handed hitters to keep the ball dead straight or be faced with playing among the trees down a steep grade, while the 6th hole returns the favour for right-handed swingers. It’s on the back nine that Ballantyne makes its mark. Hole #13 offers the first serious challenge to a golfer’s nerve – a 165-yard tee shot from an elevated box to a green that slopes to the left with a very steep drop off in the back. A pair of deep bunkers guard the green, so accuracy is a must for a shot at par. [ + ]

The finishing hole offers you a look at pretty much everything this golf resort is known for – a peek at the Dana Rader Golf School facility from the tee box and a glimpse of the resort hotel as you make your way down the fairway. Paying too much attention to those will get you into trouble on this 385-yard hole – a sand trap lines the fairway from the creek at the landing area for your tee shot to the front part of the green. With water behind that trap, you really don’t want to lose your focus on this hole or your score will take a hit. When not on the course, Ballantyne Resort offers excellent spa facilities – deemed to be one of the best in the world. Who knows, after your round you might be in need of a body wrap or two. Those of you wanting a throwback experience can make the trek up Interstate 77 to the Lake Norman area and the town of Huntersville. Once you’re there, you’ll find Birkdale Golf Club. An Arnold Palmer design, this par-72 course is very playable for golfers of all skill levels and provides each a chance to experience risk / reward on a number of holes. For those who are a little better than average, you have to wait until the back nine before the really challenging holes start, including the 554-yard par-5 13th hole and the challenging 400-yard par-4 18th hole. Your first two shots on both are crucial if you’re thinking about going for the green in regulation, as water plays a significant role in both on your approach shots. These are just a small sampling of the courses available in the greater Charlotte area, and with the added attractions surrounding the Queen City, visitors won’t be at a loss for things to do or see. But like anyone who plays a round in the friendly state of North Carolina, or those adventurous enough to go ripping around the track at Lowes Motor Speedway, there will be undoubtedly two things in common – you’ll never forget the experience, and it’ll be over far too quickly. l SYCAMORE GOLF CLUB To gain a wider appreciation of what Charlotte and the surroundiing area has to offer > www.visitcharlotte.com

DISCOVER NORTH CAROLINA’S BEST KEPT GOLF SECRETS Avid golfers owe it to themselves to play North Carolina’s most famous courses—Pinehurst No. 2, Oyster Bay, Linville Golf Club and Tanglewood, to name a few. But they could perhaps derive as much pleasure by seeking out the courses only the locals know about, and jealously guard for themselves.

Sapphire Mountain Golf Club (Sapphire) It’s appropriate that this hidden gem goes by the name of Sapphire—both the setting and the layout really do sparkle. The second hole on this course is one of the most delightful and visually intimidating par 3’s you’ll ever come across: 200-plus yards with a significant vertical drop to a small green protected on the left by a massive boulder and everywhere else by a steep, cliff-like facing. The par 4, 13th features a vertical drop from tee to fairway of at least 100 feet, then demands an accurate middle iron up to an elevated green protected on the right by a roaring waterfall. (828) 743-1174.
Sea Scape Golf Links (Kitty Hawk) The crown jewel of the Outer Banks area is Rees Jones’ Currituck Club course. Also popular among locals (and often overlooked by out-of-towners) is Sea Scape with its links-style design by Masters champion Art Wall. There are ocean views from 15 of its holes (hence the name Sea Scape), and its fairways wind through the oversized sand dunes and maritime forests areas. Because of its proximity to the ocean, golfers must reckon with the wind every bit as much as the subtle contours of the course. www.seascapegolf.com; (252) 261-2158.
Legacy (Aberdeen) Pinehurst residents often recommend this frequently overlooked course to their out-of-town guests. Designed by Jack Nicklaus II, it rivals some of Jack Senior’s best creations, both in terms of aesthetics and shot values. The signature hole is the 18th, a 459-yard brute that starts with a blind uphill tee shot, followed by a long forced carry over water to one of the largest greens on the course. Due to Legacy’s popularity among locals, it is recommended that you book your tee time well in advance. www.legacygolfnc.com; (800)344-8825.

Despite the fact that it was voted the “Number One New Public Course in North Carolina” and among the “Top 25 Public Layouts in America” by Golf Digest magazine in 1993, Stoney Creek remains one of the state’s most overlooked treasures–except by local golfers. One reason could be its out-of-the-way location between Burlington and Greensboro. A monster from the back tees–7,063 yards from the tips, with an intimidating slope of 144–it has acted as a Monday qualifying site for the Greater Greensboro Chrysler Classic. But don’t worry, architect Tom Jackson has created four sets of tees on every hole to make the course an enjoyable challenge for players of all levels. www.stoneycreekgolf.com; (336)449-5688.

dmittedly, the chin resting on my chest and the occasional bobbing of the head in the transition from unconsciousness to consciousness and back again didn’t look too good inside Martini Ranch in Scottsdale’s trendy downtown district.
There had been a few beers consumed that evening, which began over delicious appetizers at the Pink Taco and continued in an impromptu pub crawl through hot spots such as Barcelona and Martini Ranch, but it really was fatigue instead of overindulgence causing this unflattering impression of a wino. The FBR Open, Scottsdale’s version of Mardi Gras and Spring Break with a delightful golf focus, will do that to a visitor to this Sonoran Desert town outside of Phoenix, but then again, there’s always enough going on even when the PGA Tour isn’t in town to create a memorable golf vacation.

The tour is coming to town twice
as much as it used to as the second Frys.com Open will take place Oct. 23-26 at Grayhawk Golf Club, with Mike Weir arriving as defending champ of a tournament that saw Phil Mickelson, J.B. Holmes and Tom Lehman play in the inaugural edition last year. The Frys.com Open complements the granddaddy of Scottsdale tournaments, which takes place the first week of February each year at TPC Scottsdale. Little did I realize when I checked in at the nearby Fairmont Scottsdale Princess for a week at the FBR Open that sleep would become such a precious commodity. It all seemed so serene. The Princess is an oasis of pools, gushing fountains and a cascading waterfall at its Willow Stream spa, the ideal setting for rest and relaxation even during tournament week when it and TPC Scottsdale, just a chip shot away, become ground zero for a bodacious bacchanalia among the saguaros. An omen of things to come came early in the week when the opening dinner took place in a massive tent that resembled a big top and hinted of the circus atmosphere to come. Leather-clad bikers stood outside, with the chrome of their hogs sparkling. Inside, a stirring rendition of America The Beautiful was followed by the release of an eagle, which
flew the entire length of the tent and back. After dinner, the Doobie Brothers began cranking out ‘70s classics to ignite the party. That party lasted for days at the Bird’s Nest, the après-tournament party central, the on-course Greenskeepers Tent, and at the FBR Open’s most famous landmark, the par three 16th hole, known as the rowdiest in golf where boo-birds strike with the venom of the indigenous rattler if a player misses the green. The FBR Open has set unofficial tour records for attendance and the community benefits from all of this zaniness through proceeds handed over to area charities through the Thunderbirds, the local civic group that organizes the tournament. It earns its self-proclaimed nickname, the “Greatest Show on Grass,” and even if it isn’t a major or the Players Championship, the FBR Open, and now the Frys.Com Open, offer a unique foundation to build a golf vacation around. “I have fun. Some people think the event (FBR Open) is too loud, it’s too big, but at the same time, boy does it draw the crowds,” says Canadian PGA Tour player, and FBR regular, Stephen Ames. Ian Leggatt of Cambridge, who won the 2002 Tucson Open, agrees. “I think they promote it as the greatest party on grass. That’s what they do. It’s the place to go. the game, with a vibrant nightlife to complement a day on the golf course. Scottsdale has plenty of incentive to maintain its status as a premier golf destination, considering the FBR contributes $174.7-million into the economy and contributes more than $6-8-million to Arizona charities.
More than 93,000 Arizona households are in golf communities, while the game contributes $3.4-billion annually to the economy of the state, which has close to 20,000 people working within the golf industry, earning more than $291-million in wages and benefits, leading to nearly $80-million annually in taxes. Scottsdale, with a population of 234,900, has 51 golf courses within city limits with more than 200 in the surrounding area, where approximately 12million rounds are put through each year, with tourists accounting for 40 per cent of those rounds in the city. With those numbers, it isn’t difficult to figure out why the golf landscape is continually evolving as Scottsdale strives to maintain its status as one of the top golf destinations in the United States. A good example is TPC Scottsdale, the home of the FBR Open, who recently opened its new Champions Course, which stretches to over 7,100 yards and

nicely complements the Stadium Course. At the Four Seasons Scottsdale at Troon North, an extensive renovation was completed last year by Tom Weiskopf, the original designer of the Pinnacle Course and co-designer of the Monument Course. The 36-hole facility saw a blending of the two courses and changed sequences in holes to improve playability and to make Pinnacle more walkable. Meanwhile, the We-Ko-Pa Golf Club, located east of Scottsdale and nearby Fountain Hills, opened its new Saguaro Course, designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, in late 2006 to complement the original Cholla course at a facility owned and developed by the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation. While the facilities are a big reason for Scottsdale’s success as a golf destination, unique instruction, fitness and clubfitting programs enhance a golfer’s time away from the golf course. The visually-stunning Boulders Resort and Golden Door Spa in nearby Carefree pays attention to women, with its threeday Ladies First program, which includes instruction on and off the course, casita accommodations and a margarita welcome. At the Westin Kierland, Steve Heller will put visitors through the paces with the Fore-Max golf training system, a fitness program designed to improve participants’ games. Golf also weaves itself in with spas, upscale accommodations and fine dining at other resorts such as the Phoenician, Hyatt Regency Scottsdale at Gainey Ranch and Camelback Inn, a J.W. Marriott facility, to offer a variety of options while exploring a Scottsdale golf getaway. . For more information visit www.scottsdalecvb.com
golf in Ireland “Everything you’ve seen and heard about Irish golf is as much reality as it is cliché. The air may be slightly chilly, but there’s a warm, natural feeling down in a valley surrounded by high fescue, walking along a broken road towards the silhouette of a mountain topped with a thick layer of mist or gazing out on a choppy sea from a fairway. There’s a feeling of isolation in those settings, one that is contrasted sharply by the friendly welcome back at the clubhouse over soup and sandwiches and perhaps a pint or two. Pardon the cliché, but The Bahamas is one of those unique vacation destinations that has to be experienced more than once.
ter the Caribbean’s largest casino, 150-foot yachts and luxurious waterfront estates that attract the likes of Michael Jordan and Oprah Winfrey.
Not only because there is so much to do but more so because there are just so many captivating places to visit and explore.
The Bahamas is an outdoor adventurer’s paradise. Whether it’s scuba diving, snorkeling, deep sea fishing or golfing there is something for everyone somewhere on one of the Bahamian islands. And if you’re looking for something a little less taxing there are plenty of powder white beaches to discover on such intriguing places as Rum Cay, Ragged Island, Abaco and Great Exuma just to mention a few. It is here on what are referred to as the “Out Islands” that one is able to truly capture the essence of The Bahamas.
Comprised of 700 islands and 2500 cays, this semi-tropical archipelago stretches over 100,000 square miles, 200 miles off the southeast coast of Florida. There are 14 main islands that comprise The Bahamas whose meaning is derived from the Spanish words “baja mar” or “shallow sea”. Home to the world’s third longest barrier reef, The Bahamas is renowned for its turquoise waters, pristine white beaches and laid back, friendly people. Formerly a British colony, the islands became the Commonwealth of The Bahamas in 1973 after 325 years of British rule. British influence can be seen throughout much of the islands, especially in Nassau, The Bahamas’ capital and largest city. With a population of over 170,000, Nassau, New Providence, is home to over half the people of The Bahamas and many of the world’s rich and famous. In addition to its ideal climate, it was for the golf that I decided to visit The Bahamas. Although not your typical island golf destination, The Bahamas is working diligently to change how it’s perceived in golf circles around the world. Ten outstanding courses are scattered throughout several of the main islands with 10 more scheduled to open sometime over the next five years. From Toronto it’s a three-hour direct flight to Nassau from where many of the best golf courses in the Caribbean await. On New Providence Island there are a few golf courses available depending on where you stay in Nassau. For destinationGOLFmag.com

guests of Atlantis and The One and Only resorts, the Tom Weiskopf designed Ocean Club welcomes the privileged and fortunate few and is certainly worth playing. Down the road across from the Sheraton Cable Beach Resort is the Cable Beach Golf Club, a 6453-yard Fred Settle Jr. design open to the public. On the west end of the island is the private Lyford Cay Club and the Greg Norman re-designed Blue Shark Golf Club (formerly South Ocean). Forget about playing at Lyford Cay unless you hobnob with the likes of Sean Connery. Getting a tee time at the latter is possible provided you’re prepared to pay the $300 + U.S. (approx.) green fee and are able to book well in advance. As part of your Bahamian golf adventure I’d recommend visiting some of the other nearby islands. Freeport, Grand Bahama is a short 30-minute flight from Nassau via Bahamas Air and home to the 6909-yard, Robert Trent Jonesdesigned Reef Club and the 6824-yard, Dick Wilson-designed Lucayan Country Club. Both courses are a 3-iron’s distance away from the Westin’s Our Lucaya Resort, one of the finest hotels in The Bahamas and the hotel of choice for the nation’s president when he visits the island. Perhaps the highlight of my stay in the Bahamas was our one-day excursion to the “out island” of Abaco. From Freeport, we boarded a Regional Air twin-engine Cessna aircraft that weaved its way through pillow-like clouds over crystal blue waters en route to the island community of Marsh Harbour 35 minutes away. Despite being The Bahamas’ third largest urban centre, to say that this is a laid-back island community would be an understatement as speed limits seem inappropriate and the time of day is nothing more than an approximation. It was the lure of the famous Abaco Club on Winding Bay that brought me to this remote island paradise. Situated 22

on over 500 acres on a peninsula surrounded by two miles of white sand beach, the billion dollar development is the brainchild of British entrepreneur Peter de Savary. At centre stage of the property is the world-class 7123-yard championship golf course designed by renowned golf course architect Donald Steel. “This is an outstanding piece of land for a seaside golf course. It is spectacularly tropical with its long sandy beach, reefs, bluffs and lush vegetation. It is everything that people would expect from The Bahamas and more,” says Steel who considers Abaco to be one of his finest designs. It is the final four holes at Abaco that will leave the most indelible impression. From atop the highest point on the golf course, the terrain gradually drops to sea level before leaving you afoot on the 18th tee overlooking the adjacent sea and the pounding surf below. By the time we reached the final hole the sun was starting its descent in the horizon. For me, it was one of those precious moments in life when you wish you could make time stand still. At the Abaco Club guests are welcome – once. After your first visit you’ll have the opportunity to join where you may see the likes of PGA Tour professionals Ernie Els, Lee Westwood, Darren Clarke and Billy Andrade who are all members of the club. I don’t expect I’ll ever be able to join the Abaco Club in my lifetime but it was certainly a memorable experience being a member for a day. Although my inaugural trip to The Bahamas was shortlived I felt like I experienced what makes this collection of coral islands so special. More than anything it was the diversity of the places and people that I appreciated the most. With 700 other islands to discover, I’m sure my next visit to The Bahamas will be as unique and exciting as the first. .

SOUTH CAROLINA stories by Norm Woods
a change of pace SOUTH CAROLINA
golf destination known as Swamp Fox remains very enthusiastic about golf in her part of the United States, despite an economy that is reeling. Lisa Haynes, Director of the South Carolina
“Last year our visits were down slightly but in early 2008 our rounds were up again marginally,” Haynes offers. “The Pee-Dee area courses match anything in the State, but for less money,” she adds. Swamp Fox got its name from General Francis Marion, a sly guerrilla warrior who mercilessly harassed the British during the Revolutionary War. Marion and his band of patriots would wait tirelessly in the swamps and ambush unsuspecting British troops, disrupting Redcoat operations in the State. Florence, South Carolina’s Swamp Fox Country Golf is a part of the Pee-Dee regional golf operation that covers
over 30 courses within an hour of the town of Florence. Some of the courses high on the list of ‘must play’ include The Country Club of South Carolina, a private facility that offers package play. It has hosted the Nationwide Tour and boasts one of the best finishing holes in all of the State. The Golf Club of South Carolina at Crickentree near Columbia is one of the region’s number one public play courses with the Wyboo Golf Club being another. Not far from Wyboo you will also find the Traces Golf Club as well as Governor’s Run near the town of Lamar. As far as golf in South Carolina goes, this is not Myrtle Beach or Charleston, but the Swamp Fox area certainly provides a wide range of golf options for golfers and families who are looking for a relaxing, laid-back golf experience with friendly hosts and unbeatable prices. >> www.swampfoxgolf.com

something new, something olde SOUTH CAROLINA
North Carolina and Columbia, South Carolina a golfing mecca awaits. Nestled in an area between Charlotte,
Olde English District is an ideal choice for the golfer who wishes to enjoy great courses and some authentic American history away from the hustle and bustle of larger golf destinations. Once home to a British Army Base, ‘Olde English’ offers visitors old world charm, hospitality, and history. Whether it’s the Donald Ross-designed fairways of the Fort Mills Country Club, a scenic ride through the rolling hills of Tega Cay Country Club or the unique layout and sand-hills of Cheraw State Park’s 18 hole design, where no two fairways are adjacent - there is something for every golfer.
Cheraw State Park’s modern course is one you won’t want to miss. Designed by Tom Jackson, the course is located inside of a state park and is a rare example, in today’s world of government downsizing, where there has been successful government intervention and even an indication of additional golf facilities on the horizon. Other courses that should be on your tee time checklist include Chester Golf Club, Green River Country Club, Lancaster Golf Club and White Plains Country Club. Also of interest to those music aficionados, Cheraw is the home of jazz great Dizzie Gillespie. Over 20 hotels and motels exist within the Olde English District in addition to Bed and Breakfast options for the golfing couple who may prefer this alternative type of overnight accommodation. >> www.golfpackagesofSC.com

HISTORY ‘AND’ THE MAKING SOUTH CAROLINA
Charleston South Carolina is probably the United States’ most
historic and scenic seaport destination. A Conde Nast ‘Top Ten’ travel destination the area remains a somewhat undiscovered region for golf. Those who do visit can choose from 19 championship courses by some of the greatest names in golf – Tom Fazio, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Rees Jones, Arthur Hills, Pete Dye and Gary Player.
As the golf tradition grows in the area, so does the interest in major golf events. The Senior PGA Championship was played at Kiawah Island in May 2007. The LPGA’s Ginn Tribute hosted by Annika was held at Rivertowne Country Club in 2007 & 2008 and the 2012 PGA Championship will be held at Kiawah Island.
Centrally located about 100 miles south of Myrtle Beach and 90 miles north of Hilton Head Island, historic Charleston also boasts of some of the finest dining anywhere in the U.S. as well as resort beaches and plentiful shopping. In fact, Charleston has been called the premier culinary destination in the southeastern United States. Rivertowne

Hidden Treasure – Santee, SC is a real Southern Steal
Just a stone’s throw off
– Ontario Golf
Interstate 95, not far from Myrtle Beach, Charleston and Columbia sits the little town of Santee, South Carolina.
A Mighty Bang for your Buck – Golf Chicago
Small in population but big in golf, this destination has become one of the most popular spots for golfers to spend a week, and it’s all because of great courses and reasonable rates. Often called “South Carolina’s Best Kept Golf Secret,” Santee has gained a reputation over the past ten years as the place for good golf value. The area is home to numerous courses all within a short drive of Santee and three courses located right in the heart of town. Feedback from the thousands of Canadians who make the annual trek to Santee is always positive with comments such as “challenging yet fair golf courses”, “well-manicured facilities”, affordable”, and “no five hour rounds”. For golfing groups who may wish to take a golf break and try their hand at fishing, the Santee area offers world-class fishing with two local lakes, two rivers and two canals, all with 450 miles of shoreline. The famous landlocked striped bass are plentiful and ‘delicious’.
For years we have been telling you that Santee, South Carolina is America’s Value Golf Destination. And now, others are taking notice too. Santee offers all the amenities of a great golf destination while taking it easy on your wallet. No wonder people are starting to take notice! The area also is home to a couple of courses with names meant to make you shudder as you stand on the first tee. Resort developer Intrawest’s Le Diable (Devil) and Le Géant (Giant) are courses built to test even the best golfers in the world. Elevation changes, tricky greens, winding fairways make every hole, and every shot a formidable challenge. Le Diable is part of The Raven family of golf courses and the architects have made certain your golf game is put to the test. I can’t put into words a description of Le Géant. The brochure says, “high-def golf on a giant screen”. Enough said. You must play it to understand.

TOBIANO words, Hal Quinn

T
he name itself – Tobiano – hints that this is something out of the ordinary. Pronounced tow-be-yahno, it is the name of the famous painted horses of the American south west, and conjures images of sagebrush, arroyos, and rolling hills without fences. And that is what you find here; thousands of virtually untouched acres complimented by a masterfully designed golf course. At the northern tip of the Sonoma Desert that stretches to New Mexico, the Thompson Okanagan region of south-central British Columbia is a very unique part of the Great White North with a semi-arid desert climate ideal for golf from April until late October. But even in this remarkable and hauntingly beautiful area, Tobiano stands out. Twenty minutes west of Kamloops on the site of the fabled Six Mile Ranch, developer Michael Grenier envisioned a resort community where the 18,000-acre site’s natural surroundings could be embraced and fully enjoyed. From day one the centrepiece of what will become home to residences, a marina, stables and equestrian centre, hotels, and a retail/commercial village, has been the golf course. Grenier entrusted the spectacular property to one of the game’s finest architects, Canadian Thomas McBroom. The result is that barely months after it opened, Tobiano was named the Best New Course in Canada for 2008 by SCOREGolf Magazine. “Tobiano has to be the best site that I’ve ever seen from a drama and a beauty point of view,” said McBroom. “With the mountains, Kamloops Lake, and the fissured landscape, it is literally as good as it gets.” McBroom took full advantage of the dramatic site creating a visually stunning layout with five par 5s and five par 3s that are as unique and thrilling to play as they are photogenic. Each hole at Tobiano has a minimum of four tee boxes with some holes having as many as six.
By ingeniously placing the tee boxes at various elevations and angles to the target, McBroom created an amazing array of looks and challenges. From the Sage tees it plays 5,289 yards, through Lake and Spur to the muscular and aptly named Iron tees that play at 7,328 yards. But each set of tees provide drama, intrigue, challenges, and unforgettable views. “The greatest thing about Tobiano is that every hole is in some way unique and special, and differentiated from the rest,” McBroom explained. “I think it’s probably the most memorable course I’ve made. What makes me very proud about Tobiano is that there is really nothing like it anywhere in the world.” One visit, one round on this incredible course and you’ll agree.
