Welcome to the fourth issue of Severn magazine. We now hope you're getting used to seeing us around the town, if you don’t yet have an issue delivered to your home you will find an increasing number of places in the town centre to pick up a copy. The magazine continues to develop but we still have our usual mix of What’s on, professional advice and places of interest in the area. Our regular expert Martin the Town Crier talks about Fish Street, we have a great regeneration story featuring the iconic Flax Mill and plans for this wonderful old building. We also speak to the team behind the exciting Shrewsbury Hydro project who discuss their methods of generating electricity from the River Severn. Thank you for the continued support of local readers, advertisers and editorial contributors, once again we couldn't have completed this latest issue without you. We have great stories in the coming months which I hope you will enjoy so please look out for your copy. As ever, please get in touch if you have a local story you think will be of interest or any general feedback on the magazine, always happy to hear from you.

I was walking down Ffyschestrete the other day… never been down Ffyschestrete? Bet you have, it’s now called Fish Street and was the site in medieval days of the old fish market.

Ffyschestrete { fish st }

ish was s∫d in the old market from the early 1500’s right up to the mid 1800’s although the fish mark≥ did move around a bπ, probably due to the sm≤l! Around 1647 the fish s≤lers moved to St John’s H∏l then came down to the Green Mark≥ in the Square before moving ba∞ to Fish Stre≥ in 1763. Because Shrewsbury was such an important mark≥ town fishmongers would trav≤ from afar to s≤l their goods and they would have to pay a rental, a bπ like you pay at a car boot these days for your pπch, and at the end of the day they would have to pay another fee to have the road cleaned up so, the fishmongers l≥ π be known, via the Town Crier, that anything in the middle of the ◊re≥ was free!!! This was a good √an because in those days if you didn’t work you didn’t

have any money and if you had no money then you had to scavenge for your food, hence the women would come down and pi∞ the ◊re≥ clean of all the fish heads and innards so that saved the fishmongers fee, clever or what? On the corner of Grope Lane and Fish Stre≥ is Le Plat du Jour, which is French for “French Food and Coµee Shop”, I think, anyway π’s a wonderful lπtle shop where you can buy all things French but in 1780 π was the sπe of ‘The Bear’ public house and π was around here that one of the bear pπs was sπuated, the other main pπ was in the Quarry. If you look in the doorway of Le Plat you w∏l see a ring s≥ in the ◊one, this was used to h≤p lower the casks into the c≤lar but π was also where the bear were tied to before going into

OYez! OYez! OYez! became known as ‘The Three Fishes’ the pπ. Now for the “I didn’t know that” bπ… all main towns and v∏lages π was the fir◊ pub in Shrewsbury to ban smoking many years ago and π’s had their own bear pπ, (π was the taken all the re◊ of the Country a entertainment of the day, a bπ like a medieval version of Coronation Stre≥) long time to catch up! A few doors down from the pub is a house that and if you were a ◊ranger in a town has a √aque on π recording the fa± wanting dire±ions they would dire± that The Rev. John We≈ey, the founder you via the bear pπ hence nowadays when you look at a map ≥c, you “take of the m≥hodi◊ movement, preached in the house on his visπ to the town your bearings”. Opposπe Le Plat is the Bear Steps on March 16th 1761. He was reported a marv≤lous timber framed bu∏ding as saying that “Preaching to the that, thanks to the Shrewsbury Civic peo√e of Shrewsbury is like trying to Soci≥y, was rescued from dem∫πion convert qui∞sand”!!! I don’t think and is now the home he visπed us too many it wasn’t the fall times after that. of the Civic Soci≥y but also houses many that killed him, it Dominating the exhibπions throughwas the landing!!! top of Fish Stre≥ is St out the year and is Aulkmunds, fir◊ bu∏t certainly w≤l worth a visπ, there is in the year 912, π was rebu∏t in the also a coµee shop overlooking late 1700’s and π has the gho◊ of St Aulkmunds churchyard but mind one Robin Archerson who appears your head π has low beams! eπher on the ∆ire or sπting in The Also in Fish Stre≥ we have the Three Fishes. The ◊ory gœs that wonderful Three Fishes pub, fir◊ Robin was a ◊ee√eja∞ who h≤ped recorded as sim√y ‘The Fishes’ in to bu∏d the ∆ire when the church 1780 and then in 1826 as ‘The Old was rebu∏t in the 1700’s and as he Three Fishes’ and then from 1829 π was sπting in the pub one day some

local lads came in and b≥ him a gallon of beer that he couldn’t climb the ∆ire and remove the weatherco∞, which he promptly did and fair enough the lads paid him his dues, after everyone had a j∫ly good laugh they realised that the weathervane had got to be re√aced, and π was going to co◊ money so, the lads waπed unt∏ Robin had almo◊ finished his gallon of beer and then b≥ him another gallon that he couldn’t do the reverse journey! Robin pi∞ed up the weathervane, tu∞ed π under his arm, ◊aggered out of the pub up the ∆ire and re√aced the πem, then ◊epped ba∞ to admire his handiwork. 174 ft later he came to a sudden halt! The local paper of the day reported that he was k∏led by the fall, but that’s not quπe true, π wasn’t the fall that k∏led him, π was the landing!!! See you next month. ∞

FRAMING

for b≥ter ¬otogra¬ic composπions o◊ peo√e like to frame their favourπe ¬otos and put them around the house as decoration and to remind us of loved ones or √aces of intere◊. A framed view of St. Nicholas’ Chapel, Shrewsbury

This kind of framing is a m≥hod of using ≤ements in the ¬oto to draw attention to the area of the image on which we want the viewer to focus. It should lead the eye to the required focal point and keep π there for longer. A good exam√e is when wedding ¬otogra¬ers capture the bride and groom as they exπ the

a window or door frame. The viewer’s eye can be taken into the ¬oto through layers rather like a 3D image. The night ¬oto (opposπe) of St Nich∫as’ Chap≤ near the ca◊le entrance is a good exam√e of framing. I decided to shoot through a doorway opposπe so that the ¬oto would have diµerent a∆e±s to π. The dark interior leads to the brightly lπ archπe±ure beyond church doorway. Framed by a ◊one and the ∫d oak door and ◊one ≈abs archway we are left in no doubt that add to the sense of hi◊ory. It’s not the beaming cou√e are the centre possible to see all of the chap≤ from of attention! this angle eπher, which provides a Framing can also give the ¬oto a context. You don’t need to see the wh∫e fe≤ing of intrigue. The ∫d show biz’ s saying, “Leave them church to know The frame is part of the wwanting more”, where the wedding cou√e are – the story telling and all good aap√ies nic≤y to the iart of careful framing. ◊one arch is a photos tell a story! There are many giveaway! The diµerent things you can use to frame frame is part of the ◊ory t≤ling and a subje± including, overhanging all good ¬otos t≤l a ◊ory! branches, windows, doorways, tunn≤s, Another reason to frame your ◊re≥ corners, and bridges, to name ¬otos is that π can add a sense of but a few. You can even use other depth to an image, particularly if peo√e in a gathering to highlight ju◊ the ¬otogra¬er is looking through one person, particularly if the other f∫iage or perhaps shooting through

bodies are out of focus. If you do use framing π’s important to decide if the frame is to be in focus or not. In the second exam√e I used a tree in s∏hou≥te to frame the hard working farmer on a ba∞lπ tra±or and to a± as a contra◊ to the brightly lπ du◊. There’s no right or wrong way to use a frame and in fa± in this ¬oto, as in many exam√es, π’s only necessary for the frame to go part of the way around a subje±. Framing isn’t always possible or indeed necessary; π’s ju◊ another to∫ the ¬otogra¬er can use to enhance an image. Used wrongly π can clutter a ¬oto and make π seem overcrowded but when used corre±ly π can turn an ordinary image into an exceptional one! ∞

Most people in Shrewsbury are aware of the towering Flaxmill Maltings which stands proudly at the northern route into the town. Shadowed in its former glory, lots of people speak of the plans for the buildings that have never come to fruition – but newly revised plans may finally be achievable…

resh images r≤eased of the late◊ redev≤opment signal the ◊art of the proposed £12 m∏lion regeneration. A bu∏ding not sim√y of townimportance, the Flaxm∏l and former Maltings heralds regional, national and international significance for the hi◊orical r∫e π has √ayed in giving birth to the modern sky-scrapers which we see in cπies today. Bu∏t in 1797, the now mill facade after restoration grade one li◊ed Main M∏l was the fir◊ of πs kind, the fir◊ bu∏ding in the world to have been con◊ru±ed wπh an iron frame. Typical m∏ls of the era were bu∏t of bri∞ wπh eπher ◊one or wooden floors. The du◊ caused by producing flax, the v∫at∏e lubricants used on machinery and the use of candl≤ight, continually combined to result in extreme fires wπh many m∏ls burning to the ground. Another m∏l in Ca◊lefi≤ds was larger than the Dπherington Flaxm∏l but was not fire-proof – π m≥ a fiery end wπhin a few years. The Shrewsbury entrepreneurs who masterminded the con◊ru±ion of the Flaxm∏l were Shrewsbury wool merchants and brothers Thomas and Benjamin Benyon, who joined forces wπh industrialist John Marshall of Leeds. It was the revolutionary Charles Bage who designed the new m∏l however, ut∏ising the ◊rength and qualπies of iron as a material. He went on to also bu∏d the third and eighth ∫de◊ iron-framed bu∏dings in the world – and later even became Mayor of Shrewsbury! This is a very miniscule ≈ice of the extensive and intere◊ing hi◊ory which the Flaxm∏l has to t≤l. For exam√e, after the decline of the flax indu◊ry 100 years on π was becoming a successful Maltings e◊ablishment which saved the bu∏ding from total ruin. Several years ago, f∫lowing on from numerous changes of hands, English Herπage purchased the property – safe-guarding πs ownership and immediate future. English Herπage, Shropshire Counc∏ and other partners – including the valuable Friends of the Flaxm∏l Maltings group – have now submπted an ap√ication to the Herπage Lottery Fund for £11.7 m∏lion. Arti◊ impressions demon◊rate what the sπe has the potential to look like should money be granted and these have been prepared by archπe±s Fe∏den Clegg Bradley Studios.

Geoµ Rich, partner and ◊udio leader at the archπe±s said “A successful bid w∏l re◊ore this group of internationally important bu∏dings and w∏l revπalise the local and regional economies. It w∏l allow a range of groups, from international engineers to local scho∫-ch∏dren, to increase their under◊anding of the unique and varied herπage of the Flaxm∏l”. Phase one of the proje± w∏l see the re◊oration, conservation and reuse of the key hi◊oric bu∏dings – the Main M∏l, K∏n from the Maltings ¬ase in 1898, o∂ce, ◊ables and the Dye and Stove House. If the ap√ication is successful at ◊age 1, a small grant w∏l be awarded to enable further dev≤opment of the bid for progression to ◊age 2 wπh an e◊imated timescale of 12 to 18 months. the Flaxm∏l’s campaign, said “In 2005, Shrewsbury residents f≤t the Flaxm∏l deserved to be kno∞ed-down. Now π is great to see the local pride and enthusiasm for the sπe – and the Friends group has definπ≤y h≤ped encourage peo√e to visπ wπh their a±ivπies and popular open days.” He added that “It is all about making the bu∏dings su◊ainable and viable in thems≤ves, engaging wπh the communπy and creating an attra±ion for Shropshire.” The Flaxm∏l certainly has a very long road ahead. Wπh the ownership of English Herπage, the dedication of the Friends group, commπment of various proje± partners and the ba∞ing of Shrewsbury peo√e however – the sπe is certainly becoming ever closer to πs grand re-emergence as Shrewsbury’s fine◊ bu∏ding. ∞

HYDRO Shrewsbury Hydro, the local group who are hoping to use the water power of the River Severn in Shrewsbury to generate green electricity, have won £15,000 in the energyshare competition which closed before Christmas. They gained the support of almost 2,000 people to be one of the 4 winners in the competition. hrewsbury Hydro are part of Transπion Town Shrewsbury and they expe± that a hydro scheme in Shrewsbury would generate b≥ween 1½ and 2 m∏lion k∏owatt hours of ≤e±ricπy each year. This would be achieved by l≥ting some of the water in the river flow through a turbine alongside the weir in Shrewsbury. The £15,000 is now being used to undertake the environmental surveys which are needed to ensure that all the environmental a∆e±s of a hydro scheme have been fully looked into. The surveys include a full Flood Risk Assessment, a fish pass survey and a Prote±ed Species survey. The orders for the surveys have now all been √aced and they should all be com√≥ed before the end of March. Shrewsbury is a w≤l-known centre for companies undertaking

The other thing is that almo◊ half our ≤e±ricπy is now being generated by burning gas in gas-fired power ◊ations and increasingly this gas has to be imported. Our own North Sea gas produ±ion peaked ten years ago in the year 2000 and π has almo◊ halved since then. Over 40% of our gas la◊ year had to be imported. Not only that, π’s increasingly coming in as LNG, liquefied natural gas in large tankers from the Middle Ea◊. Much b≥ter to use the rain that falls in Shropshire and Wales and flows down the Severn. ∞

h≥her you are someone who is looking to make new friends or perhaps try som≥hing totally new in a change of dire±ion, the message which Attingham Park is keen to convey in 2012, is that there is definπ≤y an opportunπy for you to make your mark and join the team. There are 25 diµerent and varied r∫es at Attingham, all of which are d≤ivered by the 600-◊rong team of dedicated v∫unteers who la◊ year, gave over 50,000 hours of service assi◊ing more than 290,000 visπors to the park alone. The v∫unteers work in harmony wπh the National Tru◊’s own ◊aµ team, including V∫unteer and Communπy Engagement Manager K≤lie Scott. Ba∞ in 2005 the property ho◊ed 150 v∫unteers, a number which seems rather low in comparison to today’s figure. The team has grown significantly as a result of the continued expansion and inve◊ment which the National Tru◊ has made at Attingham, wπh successful inπiatives such as Lady Berwi∞’s Tearoom in the main house. Some peo√e may think v∫unteering at a Tru◊ property is an a±ivπy reserved only for the r≥ired or ∫der generation but this is certainly not the case. The younge◊ v∫unteer at Attingham is only 14 years of age – wπh a 94 year ∫d h∫ding up the other end of the scale. There are also 6 v∫unteers who are proud to have served a total of 40 years individually at the house. Speaking of the benefits of v∫unteering as an a±ivπy, K≤lie Scott said “We have a fanta◊ic team

Further benefits to v∫unteering at Attingham include regular social events for v∫unteers, on-going training and of course, the opportunπy to a±iv≤y h≤p conserve one of Shrewsbury’s be◊ rural landmarks for future residents. Suggs –My Life Story oµers an access-all-areas ba∞◊age pass to the Madness frontman’s mind, as he attempts the dare-dev∏ ◊unt of single-handedly unrav≤ing the my◊eries of his own life through words and music. The show comes to Shrewsbury’s Theatre Severn on Sunday 19th February and audiences are invπed to join Sugg’s on an emotional r∫lercoa◊er through the ups and downs of an a◊onishing thirty-year career. Wπh musical accompaniment and pointless interje±ions from his loyal piani◊come-manservant, π promises to be a fanta◊ic show. Extra± from an interview by Richard Barber: Sugg’s was lying in the bath on his birthday, nursing an epic hangover from the c≤ebrations the night before when there was the mo◊ almighty crash. “I jumped out of the water” he says, “There, lying amid shards of broken glass, was our fouryear-∫d cat, a Brπish blue called Mamba. I’d put up the glass sh≤f mys≤f and π mu◊ have given way. I knew he was dead from the ◊range angle of his body. I couldn’t b≤ieve π – I loved that cat.” “I was 50. I began to consider my own mortality and out of that, the idea for ex√oring my own pa◊ somehow cry◊allised.” Speaking of the ◊age show “It’s a memoir”says Suggs.“It’s not ◊and-up. “Madness have always been about accentuating the positive. It’s no accident our songs are ◊∏l √ayed, ◊∏l enjoyed 30 years down the line. top 5 tips 1 Denim: Ju◊ like la◊ year, denim has once again made π onto the catwalks in a major way and we are already seeing π tri∞ling down onto the high ◊re≥. La◊ year π was floral patterns and ◊ru±ure, this year anything gœs. Whatever your mood (or should π be bravery?) there is som≥hing to suπ all. For me, my key shape would be the 7/8th skinny jean. It’s the jean that suπs any size and wπh the length finishing on the ankle, π keeps legs looking long and lean – h≤ping the transπion from the usual blue to patterned and c∫ourful that much easier. 2 Pleated Midi-Skirt: Sorry f∫ks, but this one looks like π’s ◊i∞ing around. When Whi◊les brought out their √eated ‘Carrie’ skirt la◊ year, the fashion ≤πe went into overdrive and π’s no different this year. I’m a±ually the proud owner of two of them, having been lu∞y wπh end-of-season sales, I tried one out in a navy blue and π qui∞ly graduated up to the r∫e of wardrobe favourπe! Many peo√e think that π’s one of the harder-to-wear πems, however team π wπh your favourπe √ain t-shirt and the ‘of the moment’ he≤ed Ch≤sea boot or a flat, kneelength boot for a more 70’s fe≤–you’ll have the easie◊ winter to ∆ring transπional outfit.

3 Tangerine Tango: The o∂cial c∫our of the year as announced by the c∫our ∆eciali◊ Pantone – although there is lπtle of π on the high ◊re≥ now, this c∫our is s≥ to be huge. Upon fir◊ thought, π can often be a tri∞y one to wear but team π wπh the mu◊ard y≤lows, pinks (that’s right, the ultimate clash, but fa±s don’t lie!) and the pale blues that have also been predi±ed. A fun c∫our for experimentation! 4 Independent stores, Charπy Shops and Local Mark≥s: There’s an abundance of charπy shops on Mard∫ including the flagship Red Cross Vintage ◊ore, which opened la◊ O±ober and has already seen record sales. Leaving the comfort of the high ◊re≥ may at fir◊ seem like

Spending a romantic evening in wπh your other half; keep your makeup sim√e but effe±ive. Stay soft and subtle by adding a nude base c∫our to the lid of the eye and over the brow bone and bu∂ng a soft neutral brown shade through the crease to add definπion. Give your cheeks a soft flush of c∫our wπh peach or rose tones to add innocence to the skin and draw added attention to your mouth wπh a ≈i∞ of pink gloss. Don’t forg≥ to pump up your lash v∫ume wπh your favourπe √umping mascara to create that flirtatious finishing touch. recommended products: MAC Opulash Mascara, MAC Peaches Blusher, MAC Nude Pigment.

Spending Valentine’s Day wπh your favourπe girls; make sure to bring out the b∫d, ◊atement lip c∫our and vixen he≤s. For a fun and flirty night on the town choose a ◊rong coral or fuchsia pink shade that is due to capture attention or try a more sultry tone such as MAC Cyber (deep pur√e) Lip◊i∞ com√imented by a ≈i∞ bla∞ liquid liner across the upper lid. Remember to line the inner waterline both top and bottom wπh a bla∞ kohl penc∏ to com√≥e this look and layer v∫umizing mascara on, if false lashes are not an option. The power of the unconscious mind to propel us or hold us back in any situation cannot be discounted. For instance there is no logical reason why we should be afraid to travel by air. It has been shown to be one of the safest methods of traveling. However many otherwise balanced and 'normal' people are gripped by a fear of this everyday task. This and other types of fear/phobia, behaviours and emotions can be readily helped with hypnotherapy.

HYPNOTHERAPY H YPNOTHERAPY CED

All too often we try to achieve goals such as weight loss, changing habits and behaviours or dealing with emotions and we repeatedly fall at the first or second fence. The reason for this can be an underlying, unacknowledged problem which prevents a successful outcome.

RAF Cosford makes a great day out it is less than 30 min drive from Shrewsbury entrance to the museum is free there is a charge for parking. One of the best features of the museum is the fact that so many of the exhibits are huge and visitors can get close and walk round and see them from all sides, add to this the number of hands-on exhibits and interactive stations in the Cold War section and it is very easy to keep kids entertained.
