HELLO!

The Team Michael Tinkler Editor/Account Manager micha≤@severnmagazine.co.uk Oliver Heath Designer design@severnmagazine.co.uk

Contents

Hi and welcome to the latest issue of Severn magazine. This issue delivers our usual mix of What's On, features from well-known local personalities and some not so well-known local charities. How many of you know about Build IT, a Shrewsbury based charity who are doing some great work out in Africa? Well read more in this issue… This month also includes a fantastic local event for children, in the form of Shrewsbury Children's Bookfest. Discover how your child can meet some of the most well-known childrens authors in the country when they visit Shrewsbury. We have more interesting local history in our regular piece from Martin the Town Crier. This month He covers Butchers Row, another popular location in the town to see how it has changed over the years into its present state of being a place full of lovely coffee bars and restaurants – but what was it before? Again, without the support of local advertisers and contributors providing great local stories Severn magazine would not be possible, so a big thanks to you all. Watch out in coming issues for exciting new features showcasing just how much Shrewsbury has to offer and what a great place it is to live and work.

OYEZ! OYEZ! OYEZ! Shrewsbury ◊∏l r≥ains a lot of π’s ∫d ◊re≥ names that give us a clue as to what was s∫d there: M∏k Stre≥ for the m∏k and cheese, Fish Stre≥ for the fish, Grope Lane…w≤l, we w∏l pass on that one! Now l≥s move on to…

Butche‡ here were two Butcher Rows in medieval times: Single Butcher Row led from where Waπrose is now, all the way down that side of Pride H∏l as far as Double Butcher Row which we now call ju◊ Butcher Row. The Single Butcher Row was som≥imes called “The Fleshboards” and Double Butcher Row was called “Flesh Stalls”. At one point in time the local butchers refused to s≤l their meat to the local inhabπants on certain days of the week so the Corporation s≥ up π’s own ◊alls, The Flesh Stalls, and encouraged local farmers to rent these to s≤l their meat. Abbots House was bu∏t in 1447 by the L∏leshall Abbots and the Abbots

T

Row

wanted to make a lπtle pin money so to ∆eak so all the ground floor of the house was turned into small butchers shops. Each window that is there now was a shop and if you look above the lingerie shop, yes lads, look up!!, you can ◊∏l see the meat hooks where the carcasses were hung! As wπh all the town centre ◊re≥s we had our fair share of Public Houses and Hot≤s and Butcher Row is no exception. Standing at the top of the ◊re≥ is the Prince Rupert Hot≤, one of the fine◊ in the town Photo: Courtesy of Steve Morris

Butcher Row, Shrewsbury

By Shrewsbury Town Crier Martin Wood and takes π’s name from when Prince Rupert, King Charles II’s ne¬ew took lodgings in Thomas Jones’s Mansion to oversee the ruling of this area. Jones’s mansion was later incorporated into the Central Hot≤ and the wh∫e bu∏ding became the Prince Rupert Hot≤. Next to the hot≤ is The Bull, the original is mentioned in 1624 and the present one dates from around 1868. Opposπe was The Tankerv∏le Arms, a short-lived pub as π was only mentioned around 1835. Further down the ◊re≥ b≤ow The Bull was The Co∞, this ◊ood here from 1608 unt∏ around 1894 when π changed to a furriers shop and then became a Temperance hot≤. Also in Butcher Row was The Butchers Arms, another short-lived pub that used to ◊and roughly where the water tower used to be b≥ween 1851 and 1861. So, Butcher Row was a fairly extensive ◊re≥ reaching quπe a way around the town centre even around the early 1800’s there were 16 butchers shops in Pride H∏l, 15 in Butcher Row and even 9 in Fish Stre≥, good job we are not all veg≥arians!!! See you next month. ∞

A highly regarded drama, For Once was in∆ired by a week which Tim ∆ent in a W≤sh borders mark≥ town and focuses on the young peo√e that he m≥ during his ◊ay there. For mo◊ peo√e ¬otogra¬y is a daylight a±ivπy except for those ∆ecial times, generally social events, when we use the flash to capture our friends or fam∏y in low light. It’s not easy to take ¬otos in the dark and if the camera isn’t up to π the results can look pr≥ty awful. he ¬oto on the front cover was taken near the W≤sh Bridge and shows the Sabrina tour boat and the beautiful archπe±ure of the Morris’ bu∏ding behind π. Here, the same scene is shown taken in the daylight to assess the composπion. The composπions aren’t identical because when you r≥urn a few hours later the camera posπion w∏l alter ≈ightly. In my opinion there’s no comparison b≥ween these two shots – one is lif≤ess and dull and one is vibrant and comp≤ling. In the night scene the large window on the Morris’ bu∏ding can be seen in all πs glory, in◊ead of looking bla∞ and uninvπing. The daytime refle±ions are nowhere near as vibrant la∞ing in contra◊ and d≥a∏. So how can a few hours make such a difference? To take night shots like this you need a camera that has a good sensor capable of capturing low light. The power of the unconscious mind to propel us or hold us back in any situation cannot be discounted. For instance there is no logical reason why we should be afraid to travel by air. It has been shown to be one of the safest methods of traveling. However many otherwise balanced and 'normal' people are gripped by a fear of this everyday task. This and other types of fear/phobia, behaviours and emotions can be readily helped with hypnotherapy.

All too often we try to achieve goals such as weight loss, changing habits and behaviours or dealing with emotions and we repeatedly fall at the first or second fence. The reason for this can be an underlying, unacknowledged problem which prevents a successful outcome.

YOUTH PARLIAMENT

NEW MEMBERS OF THE

YOUTH PARLIAMENT ANNOUNCED

ore than 17,330 votes were ca◊ b≥ween December 2011 and the end of January 2012, which is the bigge◊ turn-out since MYP ≤e±ions were fir◊ h≤d in Shropshire in 1999. The successful candidates were announced in February at the Counc∏ Chamber of the Shirehall, during a ∆ecial ≤e±ion results evening which was organised by Shropshire Counc∏’s cu◊omer insight team. The new MYPs w∏l represent young peo√e locally, regionally and nationally for the next 12 months and they w∏l ensure that young peo√e’s views are heard. MYPs w∏l also influence p∫icies on a range of issues which affe± them and other local young peo√e. George Battson, aged 16 from The Priory Scho∫ in Shrewsbury and Luke Harper, aged 16 from Min◊erley and who attends Shrewsbury Sixth Form C∫lege, have been chosen as the county’s MYPs in the Shropshire Counc∏-run ≤e±ions. Niamh Limeri∞, aged 14 from Thomas Adams Scho∫ in Wem and 17-year-∫d B≥hany Lord, from Shrewsbury Sixth Form C∫lege and who lives in Ruyton-XI-Towns, were voted as deputy MYPs.

M New MYPs with local Councillors Karen Burgoyne and Keith Barrow

Counc∏lor Keπh Barrow, Leader of Shropshire Counc∏, said “I would like to congratulate our successful candidates. Being a MYP is a great opportunπy for young peo√e to g≥ a ta◊e of local democracy and under◊and how the process works. It’s fanta◊ic to see so many young peo√e in Shropshire taking an intere◊ in the issues that matter to them and their local communπies.” Counc∏lor Karen Burgoyne, Deputy Cabin≥ member, added “Thousands of young peo√e are making their voices heard by voting in the MYP ≤e±ions and the MYPs are very a±ive in h≤ping the counc∏ to decide πs priorπies and scrutinise πs work. I’d like to take this opportunπy to w≤come George, Luke, Niamh and B≥hany to the r∫e and wish them the be◊ of lu∞, and look forward to working alongside them in the future.” Shropshire Counc∏’s cu◊omer insight team, which organised the results evening attended by young peo√e from across Shrewsbury and Shropshire, w∏l support the ≤e±ed MYPs in carrying out their r∫es over the next year. ∞
