We also have our regular mix of features including Martin the Town Crier, this month He covers Pride Hill – a place we all use on a regular basis but do we know the history of this interesting area? Also we feature a local company called Space to Sew, read about the fantastic work they are doing in contributing to the ‘Dress a Girl’ charity, who make clothing to send out to Africa! Learn how you too can get involved. Should fresh proposals for the redevelopment of our town’s three main shopping centres get the go-ahead, be prepared for a radical new shopping experience and revival of retail in Shrewsbury!

1

›››››››››››››››››››››››››››››››››››››››››››› n a b∫d move to improve the vπalπy and viab∏πy of the entire town as a visπor de◊ination, the owners of the Pride H∏l, Darwin and Riverside shopping centres are intending to inve◊ an impressive £150 m∏lion into the transformation of shopping in Shrewsbury. They are proposing a major revamp that w∏l for the fir◊ time, link all three centres in a cohesive manner and enhance Shrewsbury’s shopping heart. The proposed redev≤opment w∏l regenerate the three individual and outdated shopping centres into a modern and attra±ive √ace to shop, visπ and work. The scheme w∏l see the dem∫πion of the exi◊ing

Riverside to create New Riverside, anchored by the excπing pro∆e± of a 95,000 sq ft department ◊ore. Previous √ans to regenerate the three shopping centres have fa∏ed due to a la∞ of financial realism – however according to the current owners of the sπes, their proposals are based on sound financial appraisals. New Riverside w∏l d≤iver new, large shop unπs which aim to attra± high-qualπy r≥a∏ers that are not already present in Shrewsbury, to com√ement the town’s ◊rong se±or of independently owned businesses. D≥a∏ed √ans have recently been unve∏ed providing an idea of what is on the horizon for Shrewsbury as a

bu◊ling r≥a∏ hub. Wπh the inclusion of 50 new shops and 10 re◊aurants, π is hoped that the shopping centres which have long been disconne±ed from each other, w∏l eventually house big name r≥a∏ers who w∏l choose to inve◊ in Shrewsbury and boo◊ the town’s appeal to all. Modern r≥a∏ unπs w∏l attra± new r≥a∏ers to Shrewsbury and h≤p ensure that the area is a successful r≥a∏ de◊ination in the future, boo◊ing consumer ∆ending across the town. Shoppers w∏l not have to trav≤ to comp≥ing towns such as T≤ford, Birmingham and Che◊er for exam√e – but w∏l find everything they need on the door◊ep. ∞

The Theatre Severn looks like a boat gliding down the river

Photographing theTheatre Severn …with a little Photoshop

Beautiful river boat When ◊anding by the W≤sh bridge and ¬otogra¬ing the Theatre at dusk π’s a small leap of the imagination to see a ≈eek, ∏luminated river boat gliding s∏ently down the Severn. It appears quπe beautiful through my lens – look at the resulting ¬otogra¬ and judge for yours≤ves. If that’s not a boat I’ll eat my proverbial hat!

Beauty is in the eye… Of course not everybody sees π that way. When the bu∏ding was fir◊ con◊ru±ed the design was a lπtle controversial and attra±ed more than πs fair share of crπicism. Indeed, in 2009 the magazine ‘Bu∏ding Design’ nominated the bu∏ding for the award of the ‘Carbuncle Cup’, given to ugly bu∏dings in the UK. Fortunat≤y π

By Shrewsbury Photographer Steve Morris

didn’t win, that honour went to the new Liverpo∫ Ferry Terminal. This gœs to show that beauty is clearly in the eye of the beh∫der. Using Photoshop I wanted the ¬otogra¬ to show the Theatre in the be◊ light possible and therefore resorted to using Adobe Photoshop to enhance the appearance. Many puri◊s argue that using digital image edπing software, like Photoshop, is a form of cheating that often makes the ¬otogra¬ look unnatural. This argument has raged for some years now, and peo√e can g≥ quπe hot under the c∫lar about π. I com√≥≤y disagree. Enhancement In the good ∫d days of f∏m ¬otogra¬y dev≤opers resorted to all manner of darkroom tri∞s wπh chemicals to wring every la◊ ounce of drama out of ¬otos for magazines and new∆apers. Using Photoshop to enhance digπal ¬otos is really not much different. A camera is a fairly basic to∫ compared to the qualπy of the human eye and any extra h≤p that can make an image more like the way you see π in real life has got to be good. Changing the contra◊, sharpening the focus, saturating the c∫our ≥c are all valid ways to improve an image. This is called ‘enhancement’. The ¬otogra¬ of the front of the Theatre has been enhanced ≈ightly and now you can see right into the bu∏ding when blown up large.

Alteration Where mo◊ peo√e draw the line is adding or subtra±ing obje±s – ‘altering’ the image. Removing cars and peo√e for exam√e or perhaps re√acing the sky wπh one shot on another day are all exam√es. This takes quπe a bπ of pra±ise to be done w≤l. Of course f∏m makers do this all the time wπh motion pi±ures and π’s becoming more and more difficult to know what’s real and what’s not! You have to ask yours≤f what the image is going to be used for.

If π is for recording events like news coverage ≥c then images should not be altered. For entertainment or personal uses then there is less concern and in fa± π’s all part of the art of digπal ¬otogra¬y. I altered the image of the ba∞ of the Theatre. Although I like the way the new bu∏ding surrounds the ∫d chap≤, I didn’t like the traffic b∫lard right in front of the rear entrance. So I removed π to make the image more √easing to the eye! Hope you like π. ∞

Many purists argue that using Photoshop is a form of cheating… Steve Morris ~Photographer w: http://www.stevemorrisphotography.com w: http://www.shrewsburyinsoftlight.com

‘OUr viCKi’ Severn Magazine would like to introduce our new regular columnist Vicki Archer.

Hello! Vicki Archer

I’m a mum of two monsters who I adore (but would swap for a tin of beans on occasion) married to Gav (might swap for beans and mini sausages) and work silly hours doing voice overs. You can find me each afternoon with Adam Green on BBC Radio Shropshire 96fm. Life is busy, chaotic and when I’m not trying to get toothpaste off my top… I scribble a column. Enjoy x

ummy! The Queen is coming to Shropshire’ squeals my 4 year ∫d. ‘Wπh a torch! She’s running the race wπh Jessie J in the Quarry!’ These three rather excπing events have been blended quπe beautifully tog≥her in my daughter’s brain wπh a d∫lop of overa±ive imagination on the side. ‘Can we ask her to tea?Pleeeease?’ ‘Ask who?’ I needed clarification on which super◊ar I was potentially invπing? As if π made a diµerence. As if I could accommodate Jessie but would have to po◊pone The Queen t∏l I’d bought a tea s≥ suπable, one wπh matching saucers. I was pr≥ty sure Jessie would cope wπh a ‘Supermum’ mug wπh coµee rings inside. ‘The Queen of course! She can sπ in my seat.’ I glance at the chair wπh

a unidentifiable food mashed into the crevice and remind mys≤f to include ‘patterned attire only’ on the invπe… ‘And I have a s∏ver ∆oon she can borrow and I b≥ she likes j≤ly and Daddy can h∫d the torch and we’ve got daddylions in the garden we can give her!’ Daisy watches me intently… One nod of the head would seal the deal! ‘L≥’s invπe her and see what happens’ I say, side◊epping the word ‘yes’ and reaching for the broken f≤t tip pens. ∞

From the top of Pride H∏l looking down the ◊re≥ on the left was often known as “Double Butchers Row” or “The Shambles” due to the amount of butchers that congregated there on mark≥ days and on the right hand side this was used by the shœmakers. At the top of Pride H∏l is the High Cross and π was here in 1283 that the la◊ of the W≤sh princes, David, was executed for crimes again◊ the King. David’s greate◊ crime was to be in the wrong √ace at the wrong time as his brother, Llew≤len, who was the W≤sh leader was k∏led on his way to do battle wπh King Edward who had ni∞ed his bride to be and he was not a happy man! So once Llew≤len had died David h≤d the reins unt∏ he was captured by Edward’s s∫diers and brought into Shrewsbury. King Edward wanted to overthrow the W≤sh once and for all so rather than bringing David to London, which would take a wh∏e, the King ordered his entire court to move to Shrewsbury and ordered twenty main towns in the Country to send two of their deputies and each sheriµ of the land ≥ 14

to send two of his knights and they m≥ at Shrewsbury Abbey. This was the fir◊ court in the land to have commoners representing their own areas and so Shrewsbury h≤d the fir◊ English Parliament! David was qui∞ly found gu∏ty of many crimes including commπting murder on a Palm Sunday and being a traπor again◊ the Crown. David’s punishment was to be dragged through the town tied to a horses ta∏ and then hung, drawn and quartered wπh his head being √aced on a ◊ake next to his brothers in London and his body bπs being sent to Bri◊∫, York, Northampton and Winche◊er. So next time you park ∏legally you have been warned! Another famous body to be put on di∆lay at the High Cross was that of Henry Percy or Hot∆ur as he was known and this happened after the Battle of Shrewsbury in 1403 when Hot∆ur was k∏led and, although his body was taken to Whπchurch and buried there, King Henry ordered that he be dug up and put on di∆lay at the High Cross before he too was hung, drawn and quartered and his head journeyed down to London to be put on a ◊ake on London Bridge, gruesome ◊uµ indeed!

Shopping trends as they are these days, mo◊ of the shops on Pride H∏l have changed over the years but some of the bu∏dings can ◊∏l be remembered such as Morris’s Cafe which is now W.H.Smπh. The cafe was opened in 1913 and soon became the √ace to me≥ having separate ladies tea rooms and gents smoking rooms as w≤l as a rooftop garden. It would also be mo◊ remiss of me not to mention the few inns and ho◊≤ries that graced Pride H∏l over the years include; the Clarendon Hot≤ (next to where Waπrose is now), The Wagon and Horses, The Horseshœs, The Rainbow, The Greyhound Hot≤ (now Thomas Cook’s) The Rising Sun, The Red Lion and The Leopard, enough there to w≥ anyones whi◊le! see you next time… ∞

Tuesday 24th April saw the first in a twice weekly meeting between Gavin Hogarth and The Shrewsbury Club Fitness Manager Darren Ruff. Gavin has volunteered himself for personal training with the club formerly known as Welti Health and Fitness as the club wanted to give our readers an insight into what personal training is actually like!

e: enquiries@theshrewsburyclub.co.uk t: 0044 (0)1743 467755 w: http://www.theshrewsburyclub.co.uk

The everyday ◊resses of work wπh a typically he±ic fam∏y life along wπh an untim≤y new passion for home cooking, mean that Gavin has previou≈y not considered a serious gym programme. Now though, 5ft 11, 15◊ 6 Gavin has decided to turn over a new leaf as he now has a wh∫e wardrobe he can’t fπ into as having a young fam∏y became the overriding priorπy in his life. Gavin ◊ates “I knew π was time for a change when my four year ∫d girl was learning to cycle

in the quarry and I was exhau◊ed running alongside her. The fir◊ me≥ing served to find out about Gavin’s needs, what he wants to achieve and agreeing on some reali◊ic goals. It gœs wπhout saying this is very much a two way conversation, so although Darren has the knowhow and ideas, π is Gavin who has the final say so on the programme. We look forward to f∫lowing Gavin’s progress over the coming weeks from both per∆e±ives, and seeing his imminent progress! No pressure Gavin!! The power of the unconscious mind to propel us or hold us back in any situation cannot be discounted. For instance there is no logical reason why we should be afraid to travel by air. It has been shown to be one of the safest methods of traveling. However many otherwise balanced and 'normal' people are gripped by a fear of this everyday task. This and other types of fear/phobia, behaviours and emotions can be readily helped with hypnotherapy.

All too often we try to achieve goals such as weight loss, changing habits and behaviours or dealing with emotions and we repeatedly fall at the first or second fence. The reason for this can be an underlying, unacknowledged problem which prevents a successful outcome.

Stephen Drew knows all about the poverty of third world country Malawi after teaching there for five years and living there with his family. fter r≥urning to the UK in 1998 he embarked on a huge fundraising drive as principal of Wrekin C∫lege in W≤lington which saw £20,000 raised and Wrekin Or¬an House bu∏t in the Mtunthama region of Malawi. The C∫lege then made regular donations of £10,000 each year for food and scho∫ing for the 60 or¬ans cared for there. After r≥irement from the c∫lege he only had one mission in sight – to raise even more cash for Medic Malawi which has now seen him take over the charπy f∫lowing the r≥irement of πs founders in Plymouth. Running the charπy from his kπchen table in Shrewsbury ensures every penny gœs ◊raight to fund lifesaving fac∏πies such as St Andrew’s Ho∆πal, the nutrπion centre and the operating theatre, along wπh lifesaving drugs. The programme of fundraising has already got under way wπh a Big Breakfa◊ and now Ste¬en is recruπing charπy supporters to walk up Snowdon on September 1◊ and 2nd. The money we raise lπerally makes the difference b≥ween life and death.” Ste¬en is taking visπors to Mtunthama during the summer and hopes to take a group from Shropshire. “To see fir◊ hand the condπions they live in out there makes you realise the huge difference we can make wπh ju◊ a few pounds.” “The or¬an house is now home

Ste¬en is touring the county doing talks on his charπy and πs work and is eager to ∆eak to anyone who would like to h∫d a fundraising event for Medic Malawi. ∞
