A MESSAGE FROM HEADMASTER DOUG LAGARDE
O
n Thursday, April 10, Severn launched the public phase of the largest campaign in its 100 year history. With a $22 million goal, the Severn On Course Campaign is ambitious and challenges us to look beyond the here and now and imagine what Severn can be; what it needs to be. Schools are uniquely accountable to the past and to the future. This campaign honors those who have entrusted this extraordinary institution to us and strengthens it for those who will follow. We live in an unprecedented time of opportunity and challenge; one that begs us to meet the demands of change with confidence and shape the change such that we serve our current and future students. Since 1914, Severn’s students have been asked to change, to risk, to reach for their
best selves. This campaign asks us to do the same, to reach and provide the resources for the School to be at its best. The goals of the Severn On Course Campaign are fourfold: to enhance the mission in the daily life of the School by increasing Annual Giving, to keep the mission alive for generations by increasing endowment dollars to support students and faculty, and, the lion's share of the funds, to fulfill the vision by providing needed capital to replace Teel Academic Center. Simply put space matters. We must continue to shape our campus for the next century with spaces that encourage collaboration, spaces that spur experimentation and foster connections. The gift of space drives program innovation and creativity, honors the dedicated work of our faculty, and allows
our students to aim higher, compete harder and do more to meet the changing standards of today’s world. Every corner of Severn has been touched by the generosity of those who stewarded this exceptional School for its first 100 years. We are the beneficiaries of those who came before; we stand on their shoulders. Charting our destiny is one with no end. Our goals are too ambitious and our students and faculty too talented for us not to plan for and aggressively seek support for their future. Everyone has a role to play, and I ask you to please consider making a gift to the campaign. By keeping Severn School a philanthropic priority, alums, parents and friends can continue to proclaim a confidence in Severn’s present and an excitement about its future. It's our turn.
"Since 1914, Severn’s students have been asked to change, to risk, to reach for their best selves. This campaign asks us to do the same, to reach and provide the resources for the School to be at its best." 2

On Thursday, April 10, Doug Lagarde, Headmaster, announced the launch of the Severn on Course Campaign and a generous lead gift for the renovation of the Teel Academic Center. “Through prudent fiscal management and successful fundraising efforts, $14 million is available to invest in the construction of Teel. As part of the $14 million, I am very pleased to announced that we have received a significant commitment from a member of the Severn community who is dedicated to helping the School fulfill its vision by enabling the construction project to go forward. We will honor the donors’ wishes to remain anonymous but are extremely pleased to give public and formal thanks to this donor at this exciting time for the School. Their gift to the School will be enjoyed by generations of students to come - present and future as we move forward with this needed project.”
In May of 2012, Severn School was selected to receive a prestigious $2 million endowment award from The Malone Family Foundation. The School has been designated to establish The Malone Scholars Program at Severn School for the purpose of providing scholarships to new students entering grades seven through twelve who demonstrate financial need and possess exceptional academic promise. Severn School awards at least one Malone Scholarship to a new student each school year. Our goal is to identify additional Malone Scholars using income from the grant, in accordance with The Malone Family Foundation’s endowment spending policy. Financial support for each Malone Scholar, in keeping with the Foundation’s guidelines, may range from 30 percent of tuition to full coverage. These scholarships are renewable until graduation.

If you look at what’s been happening at Severn, you get the sense that something very exciting is going on,” says Kent Holtgrewe ’73. “Helping play a (small) part in Severn’s future is extremely gratifying – on any number of levels.” Kent has supported the Kent Holgrewe '73 and Doug Lagarde Annual Fund generously over the years and most recently made a gift to the Severn on Course Campaign. Why does he continue to invest in the school and stay in touch? “I believe Severn is on a tremendous track, and if the marketplace is an accurate indicator many other families in the region think the same way. I’m hopeful the school is able to impact other students, current and future, the way it impacted me. I’m extremely impressed with Severn and the people it has attracted and retained – teachers, parents and students – and investing in the school allows me to stay connected to Severna Park and remain a part of the community.”
The School received a generous $500,000 gift from the James M. Stine Foundation to construct The Stine Outdoor Education Center. Now cleared of invasive non-native greenery such as bamboo and kudzu, the nearly three acre parcel that backs up to the Severn River. The space boasts a spectacular tiered classroom, trails, a counsel ring, a challenge course with lowropes to promote team building, and an artist reflection area. (see page 15).

They know that it helps and improves the value of future students like their youngest, Caroline, who is not yet a Severn student. “In order to fulfill the vision of the School we know we must contribute.” Jack added, “From a business point of view, I know that you must invest in the strength of the facilities, which impacts the program and makes it the best place possible, for as long as possible, for a better return for students.”

Facilities that prepare our learners for tomorrow’s challenges. Modern buildings help attract the best and brightest students and faculty. State-of-theart facilities also reflect an institution’s commitment to students by affording classroom space where students can prosper and excel, not just exist; a space where facilities offer opportunity, not obstacles to learning. The renovated Teel Academic Center will support and expand on our communities greatest strengths; meaningful student-faculty relationships in an engaging learning environment. $1.5 MILLION FOR CURRICULUM AND PROGRAMS Programs grounded in an abiding tradition and tailored to a changing world. Education and the technology to support it are changing quickly. The New 21st Century Curriculum is designed to meet that challenge by leading students towards more critical thinking, analysis and problem solving in all academic areas. Technology incorporated into every classroom and in the hands of every student will help transform teaching and learning. Meanwhile, a commitment to leadership and the environment will remain at the core of the Severn School educational experience. New leadership programs and our new Stine Outdoor Education Center will afford Severn School the opportunity to expand our commitment to both character development and environmental awareness (see page 15). Our community has responded to the 21st Century Curriculum challenge with $500,000 in commitments to date. The remaining $1.0 million is our challenge; our opportunity to demonstrate commitment to curriculum and programs that inspire the best from our students.
$2.0 MILLION FOR FACULTY AND STUDENT ENDOWMENT Faculty and students that reflect our commitment to diversity. While the best facilities attract the best faculty and the best students, the “Severn experience is most influenced by our outstanding faculty. Severn faculty live the mission every day, by knowing and valuing each student, and by inspiring students to find their passion, and pursue their dreams; accomplished in an environment committed to the pursuit of excellence in character, conduct, and scholarship. Our ability to achieve a diversity of excellence within our faculty and student population requires investment in faculty and student endowment: an investment in our future, and a visible demonstration of commitment to every faculty member, to diversity and to our desire to know and value each student. In May of 2012, Severn School received a prestigious $2 million endowment award from The Malone Family Foundation (see page 4). The School has established The Malone Scholars Program at Severn School for the purpose of providing scholarships to new students in grades seven through twelve who demonstrate financial need and possess exceptional academic promise. While Severn has technically met its endowment goal set forth in the Severn on Course Campaign, gifts to endow programs, such as, professional development, financial aid, and teaching chairs, to name only a few, are always encouraged and needed.

A Closer Look at the New Teel Academic Center The renovation of Teel Academic Center is the final crown jewel on the Teel Campus – the last of Severn's old, outdated buildings.
TEEL ACADEMIC CENTER FUNDRAISING GOAL
$17.5 MILLION
Opening the doors to six students aspiring to enroll at the Naval Academy a century ago, Rolland Teel set the initial course for Severn School.
One hundred years later, Severn School has changed with the times. We’ve grown outwardly in the ways that a healthy school must grow –
$3.5 MILLION TO GO
expanding enrollment, building our physical plant, becoming a preschool through grade 12 school, strengthening curricular offerings, and increasing student and faculty diversity. And inwardly, we’ve stayed true to the essential tenets of our 1914 founding: challenging our students to pursue excellence in character, conduct, and scholarship, in a community where adults model these qualities and where each student is known and valued. As a Severn stakeholder, you know the value of our long-held traditions — and you know yourself that a life fully realized is never at rest; it comes not through satisfaction over a task completed, but resolute action toward the next goal. That’s why this second-century inflection point is so important — the end of one era necessarily shapes the advent of the next. With your help, we can

Q. What is the Severn On Course Campaign? A. The Severn on Course Campaign is the largest campaign in Severn’s history. The primary focus of the campaign is to reach our goal of $17.5 million to renovate and rebuild the Teel Academic Center. This is Severn’s first campaign with a capital component since the successful conclusion of a 2008 campaign to construct the School’s Edward St. John Athletic Center. Additional priorities for the Severn on Course Campaign include an investment in our curriculum and programs, faculty and student endowment, and the Annual Fund.
Q. Why do we need to rebuild Teel Academic Center? A.
New building overlay on campus aerial
The 1967 Teel Academic Center with its 1984 addition is an outdated and inadequate space for teaching and learning. Originally designed as a student residence hall, its rooms are small and lacking in many of the most basic classroom necessities. This building has tested our community’s creativity and good humor, and while we have proven our ability to improvise and innovate, we are ready for an up-to-date learning facility that invites, supports, connects and expands our community’s great strengths. Our classrooms need to be big enough to foster and inspire learning and collaboration here and beyond.
Q. What is the campaign goal? A.
The total goal is $22 million, including $17.5 million to renovate and rebuild the Teel Academic Center. The Severn on Course Campaign also seeks $2 million for endowment to support students and faculty, seeks $1.5 million for programs and $1 million for the Annual Fund.
Q. Why is the Annual Fund part of the Severn on Course Campaign? A.
The Annual Fund is a vital source of support every year – and always will be. Gifts to the Annual Fund from the Severn community have an immediate impact on today’s student experience and enhance our innovative academic programs. An unrestricted gift to the Severn Annual Fund is applied wherever the need is greatest, in the Lower, Middle and Upper School, and is essential to Severn School’s financial strength and flexibility. An investment in Severn grants the ability to live our mission every day, as it has for 100 years.
