Running for charity Two members of staff recently made us very proud by running the Shrewsbury half marathon and raising money for two great local charities. Martin Sadler, from our Financial Inclusion Team, is pictured above presenting a cheque for £280 to David Elkes and Karen Williams from the Shrewsbury Food Bank. Martin explained to us that he chose to run for the Shrewsbury Food Bank because of the great support they give local people, in real need. He was also aware that the Food Bank had helped a number of residents, who the Financial Inclusion Service Team had supported, when
there had been a delay in their benefit payments. Paul Cartright, pictured below, is one of our Asset Surveyors. He raised £148.50 for Severn Hospice which is a charity close to his heart. Not only did he work on the construction of the hospice, but his father was a regular volunteer when the hospice first opened. Paul also knows a number of families who have received specialist care and support from the hospice.
Community Chest Fund Community Chest Funding applications are invited from any voluntary, community and recreational group working in the Shropshire area whose work will directly benefit our residents and communities. The Community Chest recently granted funding to Shrewsbury Baptist Church. They received a donation of
£200 towards their ‘Senior Moments’ trip to Llangollen and ride on the steam railway. Senior Moments provides ‘a holiday at home’ for senior residents, aged 55 or over, enabling them to meet new people and take part in activities and days out.

Children’s painting reaches new heights at Column Nursery School
Children attending the Column Nursery in Bell Lane, Shrewsbury were so enthralled with the daily developments at our building site, next door, that a unique way for them to get involved was thought up by our contractors, SJ Roberts. Dylan Parker, Site Manager for SJ Roberts Construction explained that the children had been coming to the site fence, adjoining their nursery, to watch them work and wave hello, so they tried to think of a way they could get involved. They came up with the idea that the children might like to paint some roof slates. The idea was discussed with Nursery Manager, Kay Rogers, who thought it was an excellent opportunity for the children to be involved, especially as they had been fascinated watching the JCBs and cranes at work through the windows.
Fifteen roof slates, along with child friendly paint, were supplied to the nursery for the children to get creative with and will be used on the roofs of the new houses. Kay talked with the children and explained how houses are built, what roof slates are and how they protect houses from the weather.
LGBT Community Event
Severnside recently hosted a lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) event at the Central in Shrewsbury to provide information on support and services available for the LGBT Community in Shropshire. It also included a photographic exhibition of Marco Cerrone, a well-known local photographer. This is the first time Severnside has held an event of this type and it proved extremely successful. The event raffle, in aid of the Terrence Higgins Trust, raised £70. Prizes were donated from Severnside and other local businesses including Theatre Severn, Rainbow Film Festival, Two Fat Rascals Café and Hair and Beauty by Mr David.
The children thoroughly enjoyed painting the slates with their own unique designs and are really excited about seeing them being taken up to the roofs. Sepp Sargeant, our Head of Development, hopes the project will inspire some of the children to get involved in the building trade when they grow up! Sepp is pictured above with Dylan Parker from SJ Roberts and Lucas Shaw from the nursery.
Lotte Hakeman, from the Terrence Higgins Trust, can be seen above receiving the cheque for £70 from Paul Craig, our Supported Housing Officer, when she came along to our offices to deliver staff training on HIV Awareness.

Welfare Reform Benefits Changes set to continue! Development Update Rowland Court, Shrewsbury Due for completion in November 2015, Rowland Court in Abbey Foregate, will provide a total of 41 new homes. The development consists: • four apartments for discounted rent • six apartments and nine houses for sale on the open market • twenty apartments for market rent • two apartments for shared ownership If you are interested in purchasing a 50% share of one of the Shared Ownership properties they are being advertised through local estate agents, Monks. You can contact them on 01939 234368 or visit their website — www.monks. co.uk for further information.
Whilst a number of our residents are moving through the last round of Welfare Reform changes, more changes and welfare cuts are set to follow. These include: The Benefit Cap will be reduced to a maximum of £20,000 per year for a family living in the Shropshire area. Whilst this does not affect a huge numbers of families it will obviously cause stress for those who are subject to the reduction. Housing support will be abolished for many 18–21 year olds. There are some exceptions, particularly for young people who are unable to return home, however, they will be expected to engage in activities that will support them into employment, particularly in applying for apprenticeships. Tax credit will be reduced for families where more than two children are involved. From April 2017 people starting a family will no longer be
eligible to the Family Element of tax credits and the tax and universal child elements will be limited to only 2 children. Should you have any questions about benefit changes, our teams are available to offer as much help and guidance as possible. If you have concerns about coping with the changes please ask for a referral to our Financial Inclusion Team. Don’t forget that our Job Clubs run on a regular basis offering support to ensure you can comply with the Claimant Commitment now expected for all Job Seeker Claimants. They are free to attend and support is readily available to help you get on line. Please remember it’s important to pay your rent. When difficulties arise, please don’t ignore them, make contact with us urgently and we will support, where we can, to resolve issues with you.
Are you looking for a garage to safely store your car or vehicle in? We have some great garages available for rent in Bomere Heath, Nesscliffe, Harlescott and locations across Shrewsbury starting from only £8.09 per week. Mr and Mrs Cowley’s garden, Overall Winners
Residents’ gardens are blooming marvellous Our gardening competition takes place every year to recognise residents who make the very most of their outside space. The competition has always been popular and so it proved again this year with a fantastic number of entries! Last year’s overall winners, Mr & Mrs Prodger, joined this year’s judging team, along with our Chief Executive, Sarah Boden and Head of Housing, Paul Forsythe. The judging team had to make very difficult decisions, on who to choose as our 2015 winners, as all of the 8 Pillar | Autumn 2015
gardens they visited were truly glorious. Sarah said “The level of entry in this year’s Annual Gardening Competition was, as always, extremely high. It’s wonderful to meet so many residents who, like myself, love gardening and have obviously spent a huge amount of time and care making their outside space blossom.” All winners were invited to attend a special presentation lunch, to celebrate their success and view photographs of all the competition winners’ gardens.
Each category winner received a first prize of £50 and second prize of £25. The overall winners Mr & Mrs Cowley from Condover won £100 and were awarded the Gardening Competition Winner’s Trophy for a year.
We would like to say a big thank you to everyone who entered and congratulations to all the prize winners.

Did you know that it’s Electrical safety week 10th – 16th November 2015? We all use electricity everyday but it can be dangerous. Electricity is one of the five main causes of fires in the home, so we need to treat it with respect. By following the handy hints and tips below, you may save your life, or the lives of your family: aa Beware of overloading sockets—extension leads or cube adapters can be handy, but remember it’s still only plugged into one socket. The total amps should still be 13 amps or fewer. aa Unplug any appliances not in use—unless they are designed to be left on like your fridge or freezer, or Freeview/Sky box. aa Register new electrical products—the average success rate of an electrical product recall in the UK is just 10–20%. This means that there are potentially millions of
recalled electrical items still in UK homes. You can check if a product you own has been recalled by contacting the manufacturer or retailer of the product.
keep blowing, circuit breakers that trip for no obvious reason or lights flickering. These could be signs that there is an electrical fault—please contact AW Electrical on 01743 247850 who are part of Severnside. Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service work in partnership with us to offer free home fire safety visits across Shropshire; with the aim to keep you safe in your home.
aa Electric blankets — Trading standards would recommend replacing electric blankets if they are over 10 years old. aa Don’t leave appliances on whilst you are out or have gone to bed—like washing machines or tumble driers. aa Look out for warning signs—loose wiring, scorch marks, hot plugs and sockets, fuses that

Resident to Ground Control! Severnside is passionate about providing residents with opportunities to help them gain employment, work experience and further education and training. Through a Job Centre initiative we are delighted to have been able to help resident, Simon Whiting, gain work experience with our grounds maintenance contractors, Ground Control. Simon initially joined Ground Control for eight weeks work experience. This proved extremely successful for
all involved and resulted in Simon securing a six month temporary contract with them. Simon told us “I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to work for both Ground Control and Severnside. I am really enjoying working with both companies and have gained a lot of experience and skills since I started. I enjoy interacting with tenants and get a great sense of accomplishment after finishing each job. My colleagues have been really helpful and are great people to work with.”
Simon’s Line Manager at Ground Control, Dave McLeod added “Since Simon started working with us at Ground Control he has been a great asset to the team. He fitted in well during his work experience, and has carried it on through the last few months in his temporary position with us. Simon has taken in all information given to him, and everything that has been shown to him, and put it all into making a great colleague to work with.”
Promoting a Healthy You! We recently held a ‘Healthy You’ Event at Belle Vue Youth Club to promote healthy bodies and minds. Advice was available on healthy eating, basic fitness and how to deal with stress.

Senate News from member Dawn WOW! The Resident Senate have been so busy over the last few months: Two Senate members attended a conference in Blackpool to link up with tenants from other housing associations. Areas covered included Universal Credit, regenerating and reviving communities and many other very informative subjects. A Resident Inspector and Senate member attended a conference at Edgbaston, Birmingham, which was aimed at Midland housing associations and was a great opportunity to link up with other tenants. Lots of information was gained on engaging young people, how to work with tenants and create green spaces. The Resident Senate always like to be at the centre of reviewing all policies, strategies and procedures. Over the last few months we have been asked to review two very important policies
— Older Persons’ Strategy and Equality, Diversity and Inclusion. These were looked at very carefully to check that they included everything that tenants expect. It was agreed that they were both fit for purpose and a green paper was sent to the Board supporting these strategies. Senate member, Debbie McBride, has been working closely with the Community Development Team to promote Digital Inclusion to help residents understand the internet and how to use it. Free drop-in sessions take place at the Two Fat Rascals Café in Riverside Shopping Mall in Shrewsbury on a Monday morning 10am– 12noon. We are currently researching what our next scrutiny project should be and in what area of the business. If you have any suggestions please get in touch as we are keen to hear your ideas and views.
The Resident Senate works because our members are all tenants who want to give other tenants a voice. If you would like to know more about the work of the Resident Senate, please get in touch on 01743 285035 or email senate@ severnsidehousing.co.uk

Justice Corner In Justice Corner we highlight some of the excellent work that we, along with our partner agencies, do to reduce crime and tackle antisocial behaviour in the local community. A recent case, taken to Court by Severnside, resulted in the Judge granting a Postponed Possession Order, as agreed between the parties. The case was taken to Court because of serious incidents of nuisance and annoyance that had been experienced by the local community. The perpetrator of the anti-social behaviour was vulnerable. The postponement of the Order allowed the perpetrator and Social Services the required time to find accommodation that was more suitable for the perpetrator’s needs, whilst also ensuring that the perpetrator would only remain at the property for a very limited period of time. The outcome was achieved because of the information about incidents of anti-social behaviour supplied by local
residents, local organisations and West Mercia Police. The Judge found, on this evidence, that it was reasonable to make an Order for possession of the property and granted it on the agreed terms of postponement of the eviction date. Some of the incidents confided by local residents were highly sensitive and distressing. Severnside appreciate and would like to thank them for sharing their information and completing diary sheets, which undoubtedly enabled Severnside to achieve this outcome in Court. Anti-social behaviour is not acceptable by anyone. If you experience anti-social behaviour, whether you believe the perpetrator is vulnerable or not, please let us know so that we can help.
If you experience anti-social behaviour, or know someone who has, please don’t hesitate to call any of the appropriate agencies listed below:
