CONTENT Weaving Site Analytic Kayak House Works On Paper Photography

WEAVING

WEAVING My first task at Columbia University’s Introduction to Architecture was to develop several systems out of 1/8” x 1/8” inch basswood strips, white thread, and glue that will be able to hold up a steel ball-bearing at a point 18 inches.

During the experiment, I challenged myself not to use glue nor threads. Inspired by weaving baskets, the wood strips could be bent in a few degrees, enough for me to build the wood nets and junctions to support the steel ball.

The tower model could finish the holding job without threads in still, but for the stiffness while moving the model, threads were added on the junctions of top and bottom.

SITE ANALYTIC

SITE ANALYTIC This project requires me to present a diagram of the site focusing on interrelationship between the scale of the city, the scale of the site, and the scale of the objects within the site. The site I chose was 133 street in Manhattan, from Convert Ave to West Harlem Piers, and the elements I wanted to present were people amount and people flow in different positions and time.

KAYAK HOUSE

ZHENG ZHENG LI LI 2017 M.Arch M.Arch Portfolio Portfolio 2018

The project is to design a kayak rental house which could house 40n kayaks, including a route and strategy for launching the kayaks into the water, a point of sale/information area, and storage/display for 50 life vests. The appointed building site is in a small area in West Harlem Piers in Manhattan. When I visited the site, I immediately realized that the open view in this site is the most precious element here. As a pier beside Hudson River, people could achieve a wide-open view that could hardly been seen in the crowded Manhattan. I also noticed that the many benches in this area have been the place people stays longest. People eat on the bench, fish on the bench, enjoy the gentle wind on the bench. I recorded the positions of the benches in the pier, applied the natural human view angle on it. Through this I got the most attractive area in my section – the place people take eyes on most.

Bench View Angle The Most Attractive Area View Line

CONCEPT My strategy is not to ruin the view people have, but to change the way people look. The idea is to set up a frame letting people to “capture” special views when they stay around here. Since the most attractive area I got is on the water, I need to extend the bridge to get there. I design the structure to be floated on the water After researching, I found that the best way to launch a kayak into water is to have a gentle gradient, allowing people to put the kayak into the river smoothly and slowly. Another thought I have is to amplify the advertising function of the rental house, let it attract people to come here and rent kayaks. I start with making a basic module model with structure lines and white mesh. The base shape is identical to the attractive area I got. The mesh naturally forms the frame, and the kayaks are stored around the circle. While people look at the frame, they also will see the kayaks around the frame since the material is transparent. It is like the kayaks are “freeze” in the air. The frame function and advertising function enhance each other.

KAYAK HOUSE

DESIGN PROCESS To gain more space, I extend the area and divide the space into four functional space – sale/information, life vest store/pick up, launch preparation and rest/cafÊ. Each of the four spaces is a module and has its own space to store kayaks. The four spaces are arranged by the view lines. The launching gradient is set beside the bridge between life vest area and launching preparation area. In this way, the water flow is shelled by the house, giving customers a comfort zone to launch kayaks safely.

I always take my film camera and go to the street, to take a look at the cities, the streets, and the people. The experience let me have an insight into light and shades, the perspective relationship and the influence of urban environment have on people’s actives, emotions and living situation.
