Stacked ARCH 3500 | Prof. C. Mendez 2018 Chelsea, Manhattan, New York
“Architecture speaks. Its language is unknowable. Its form is invented yet still discovered. A great mystery of the human need to create shelter, and from it, art. The human ability lies not in creating shelter, but in inhabiting it and interacting with it in a way that reflects our own human connections. Architecture is kind but brutal. Sovereign yet subordinate. Obeys but rebels. Our only task is to tame it. We find logic in chaos. Order in discord. As architects, it is our duty to design with care and understand the vast complexities of not just Architecture, but also human psychology. Like composers of vast symphonies, writing the music of architecture, flowing into harmony, one line at a time.

2018 | ARCH 3500 131 10th Avenue Manhattan, NY Office/Retail Space - 128,000 sf Stacked was designed as a mid-rise coworking and speculative office building for lower Manhattan in the Chelsea district. The studio project was distributed to teams of two, what follows is my individual work. The focus of the design comes from two driving factors received from the site itself. Upon observation at the site, the overwhelming amount of natural light and extravagant views were the obvious choice to become the design challenge. From research conducted, it was discovered that increased productivity in the workplace is derived from exposure to natural light as well as connections to the natural environment. The design then called for floor to ceiling windows for light and the facade was fractured into modular components to allow the floor plate to cantilever and take advantage of the numerous views surrounding the sight.

Lounge 257 | SF
2018 | ARCH 3510 Lee Hall 1 - 257 Clemson University Student Technology Lounge Lounge 257 is the product of the 2018 Summer Design + Build studio. The team was tasked with creating a lounge with a broad menu of technology available for architecture students to use throughout the school year. I was tasked individually to document the structural and construction information for the virtual reality green screen wall for which I also shared the responsibility for designing. I also completed the documentation for the augmented reality table and sand box. What follows are examples of digital drafting and documentation from that process.
SF-A-01 System Specification ID
Structurally, the VR Walls are constructed in sections of modular units bound together using a variation on the Clemson proprietary system of connection with zip ties called sim[PLY]. Because of the modular units, and standardized pieces, it was necessary to create a nomenclature system so that each piece was correctly installed.

Concept 2018 | ARCH 2520 Atlanta, Georgia Historic District Museum of Modern Architecture The Tilt Project is the Museum of Modern Architecture in Atlanta. Consisting of twenty-thousand square feet, the project stood at the intersection of Luckie and Forsyth Street in the historic district of downtown. One of the biggest challenges to overcome was daylighting. The Equitable Building towers over the site casting a huge shadow during most parts of the morning until noon. Only a sliver of light was available to use that came into the front of the museum. To maximize the small amount of natural light, the front facade consisted of mostly glass angled to face the direction of oncoming light.
The Mass A simple extrusion of available construction area defined by Atlanta Building Ordinances
Reduction Cut Mass reduction to begin shaping the form and define lobby program needs.
Mass Removal Removal begins to form two separate objects that coincide together.
Translation The two objects are now separate and move apart to create two unique masses.
The Tilt The tilt now creates the facing for natural light to enter gallery space above the lobby and create the project’s name sake.

SKY[frame] | SF
2017 | ARCH 2510 State Park Proposed Scenic Overlook/Trail Head Project SKY[frame] is a theoretical proposal for a scenic overlook viewing station inside a state park. The design is derived from the subtractive Boolean method. Reduced from a large mass, each space inside the structure becomes less intimate and offers wider views and more open interactions with nature as one climbs further up into the station. Programmaticly, the first spaces are individualistic; the low ceiling, limited views, and earthen walls on two sides give an individual or small group the opportunity to rest or contemplate. Above this space, accessed by a ramp, are larger more open spaces that offer wider views and a chance for nature lovers to share their thoughts with each other or take a snap shot. For those willing to venture further into the structure, a full 360 degree view rewards the hiker’s perseverance. With panoramic views, one can sit on the recessed platform and enjoy the day’s end.

Pavilion/Public Gathering Space
Surface Construction | Creating Volume
Theoretical Curvilinear is a theoretical experiment with curved surfaces constructed from grid (lattice) structures. The goal is to reach organic form comprised of inorganic structure; an opposites approach. The design is modeled with each individual curve represented in a wood grain texture, an idea inspired by Shigeru Ban’s Nine Bridges Country Club House in South Korea. The aim of this experiment is for it to be utilized in an upcoming project for a public transportation hub. The Curvilinear creates volumes of efficient space and natural vaults which are intended to give the occupant a humbled, cathedral-like experience where each transition between spaces are monumentally important.
