The SFA media relations office is located on the west side of the SFA Fieldhouse, directly north of Homer Bryce Stadium, as the staff is available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and starting three hours prior to game days.

LUMBERJACKS OVER THE AIR

For the second-straight season, Stephen F. Austin is offering a new and innovative way to follow the Lumberjacks. SFA reached an agreement with ESPN3 in the spring of 2015 to broadcast home Lumberjack sporting events, including all five SFA home football games. The free broadcast can be reached by visiting ESPN3.com as well as through the WatchESPN app. In addition to football home games, SFA fans can also watch each home soccer, volleyball and men’s and women’s basketball games this season. Live stats and notes will continue to be available at SFAJacks.com.

INTERVIEWS

All interview requests for SFA coaches and student-athletes must be coordinated through the Media Relations office and must be arranged at least 24 hours in advance. Head coach Nicole Dickson is readily accessible to the media as the best times to coordinate interviews are between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Student-athletes are instructed not to conduct any interviews unless it has previously been arranged through the SFA Media Relations office. Cell phone numbers of SFA student-athletes will not be given out to media members and no interview requests will be granted on travel or game days unless previous arrangements are made through the proper sport contact.

2016 COMMISSIONER’S CUP CHAMPIONS

For the fourth time in seven years, Stephen F. Austin has claimed the Southland Conference Commissioners Cup, given annually to the top overall athletic program across the 13-team conference. The four Cups for SFA ranks second all-time since the competition was instituted in the 2002-03 season. The Lumberjacks tallied 167 points on the year, defeating second-place Sam Houston State by 15.5 points and finishing 19.5 points ahead of third-place Abilene Christian. The total was bolstered by conference championships by women’s soccer, men’s basketball and men’s outdoor track and field, complemented by runner-up showings from men’s and women’s cross country. In addition to its fourth Commissioners Cup, SFA also claimed the women’s All-Sports trophy for the thirdstraight year and the fourth overall. The Ladyjacks racked up 95 points, outlasting second-place Abilene Christian by 3.5 points while racing past third-place McNeese by 20.5 points. Five Ladyjack teams finished in the topthree of their respective sport standings as the lowest an SFA women’s team finished in the conference standings was sixth. The Lumberjack men finished second in the men’s AllSport standings with 72 points, finishing six points back of Sam Houston State and a half point better than thirdplace Lamar. Four men’s teams recorded top-three finishes, giving SFA nine for the year, as the ‘Jacks continue to establish itself among the elite athletic programs in the region. An exclamation point to the award also came in the form of the Ladyjack bowling team, which captured SFA’s first NCAA Division I national championship in April.

4

Bowling does not factor into the Commissioners Cup as SFA and Sam Houston State are the only Southland Conference institutions that sponsor the sport. Thanks to the efforts of the department as a whole, SFA had clinched the 2015-16 Commissioners Cup following the completion of the track and field championships and the softball regular season. The victory became official once baseball concluded its season Saturday. The Southland Conference all-sports trophies are awarded annually for men’s and women’s competition based on a 13-point system for all conference sports. Point values are 13, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1, pending place of finish. Regular-season standings are used for sports that have a conference tournament. The Commissioner’s Cup is awarded to the university compiling the highest combined total of men’s and women’s all-sports points.

MEET THE COACHES Stephen F. Austin Director of Athletics Robert Hill announced July 5, 2016 the hiring of Nicole Dickson as head coach of the Ladyjack softball program. Dickson comes to SFA from Tyler Junior College, where she started the softball program in 2013 as the head coach. Dickson took her first head coaching job at Paris Junior College from 2012-13 and was an assistant coach at Howard College from 2010-12 and a graduate assistant at Hardin-Simmons University from 2008-09. Overall in three years as a head coach, Dickson won two conference championships and took her team to the NJCAA Division I National Tournament twice with two top ten finishes. “Nicole is a rising star in collegiate softball,” said Hill. “To accomplish what she did at TJC was remarkable. Taking a two-year program to national prominence is nothing short of amazing. We think she can put SFA in a position to contend for Southland Conference titles every season. She has proven herself as a head coach and is more than ready to lead our softball program.”

NICOLE DICKSON Head Coach • 1st Season 198-35 *Junior College (Eastern New Mexico, ‘08) Awards/Honors/Achievements: • Two NJCAA National Tournament Appearances • Two-Time Coaching Staff of the Year for NJCAA Region 14 • Region 14 Conference Champions in 2016

In just the second season for the TJC softball program in 2016, Dickson led the Apache Ladies to a 60-6 overall record, a conference championship and a fifth place finish at the national tournament. Her staff was named the Region 14 Coaching Staff of the Year for the plethora of team accomplishments. Dickson got the program on the right track in 2015 with a 39-18 record in the inaugural season, helping TJC qualify for regionals and place third in its league. In her first head coaching stint, Dickson led the 2012-13 Paris Junior College Lady Dragons to the school’s first ever region title and first NJCAA National Tournament appearance. The Lady Dragons went 38-19 on the year and 15-5 in league play, claiming both conference and regional titles. They then went on to finish the season ninth at the NJCAA National Tournament. Following the season, Dickson and her staff won Coaching Staff of the Year honors for NJCAA Region 14. Prior to Paris, Dickson served as the assistant coach at Howard College for three years and was the GA at Hardin-Simmons University. During her time at Howard, the softball program was NJCAA Region 5 Champions in 2011 and 2012, placing seventh nationally in 2012 and ninth nationally in 2011 at the NJCAA National Tournament. While at Hardin-Simmons, she helped guide the Cowgirls to an American Southwest Conference West Conference Championship, finishing the season at 31-12. Dickson split her playing career between stops at Eastern New Mexico University and Howard College. At ENMU, she posted a 22-14 record as a pitcher while playing for Armando Quiroz and Amber Daniel. She graduated ENMU summa cum laude and was the 2008 Undergraduate of the Year. Prior to ENMU, Dickson played at Howard and boasted a perfect 4.0 GPA in the classroom. She was an all-conference and all-region selection as a pitcher, posting a 19-4 overall record. She also hit .365 for her career. Dickson inherits a Ladyjack program that finished the 2016 season strong at the Southland Conference Tournament in May. SFA won three games at the event in Lake Charles, Louisiana to reach the semifinals for the second time in the past three years. After finishing 28-29 overall and 13-13 in SLC play, the Ladyjacks return a strong core group of players for the upcoming 2016-17 campaign. Included in that mix is NFCA All-Region first baseman Brittany Lewis, all-conference third baseman Taylor LeFlore and the top two pitchers on the squad in Callee Guffey and Makayla Sikes. What They’re Saying About Nicole Dickson: Patty Gasso – Oklahoma Head Coach “Nicole is an energetic and competitive coach who will come in and make an immediate impact for Stephen F. Austin. She has great knowledge and passion for the game and will get the right players to fit her system. SFA got a good one!” Tim Drain – Tyler Junior College Director of Athletics “While we hate to lose Coach Dickson, we are proud for her and this opportunity at SFA. She came to Tyler Junior College and built a program literally from the ground up. In just two short years, she turned TJC into a national contender. We sincerely thank her for her time at TJC, and wish her all the best at SFA.” Corey Lyon – Louisiana-Monroe Head Coach “Nicole Dickson is the perfect fit for the SFA program. Nicole has worked hard to work her way up the coaching ladder and has been a winner everywhere she has been. She will be a great role model and mentor for the SFA softball program.”

2015-16 YEAR IN REVIEW NATIONAL CHAMPIONS!

Stephen F. Austin’s women’s bowling team set a new program milestone, capturing the NCAA Division I national championship on Saturday, April 16, 2016 in New Brunswick, N.J. One season after capturing national runner-up honors, the Ladyjacks battled their way back into the championship match, drawing a familiar foe in top-seeded Nebraska. This time around, however, the tables turned as the Ladyjacks outlasted the Cornhuskers 4-3, earning the first Division I national title in school history. Sophomore STEPHANIE SCHWARTZ was named the NTCA Division I National Player of the Year while junior KIARA GRANT was named the NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding player.

THE PAYNE TRAIN

The stellar year continued for senior DEMI PAYNE, who was named a Bowerman Award finalist in December of 2015, capturing the fan vote. Her 2016 season started off strong as she cleared 16 feet in New Mexico, becoming just the third woman in the world to ever clear the height. Her quest to repeat as a national champion took an unfortunate turn, however, as she snapped her pole on the opening height at the Texas Relays in April, sidelining her for the remainder of the 2016 outdoor season. But she continues to train with her sights set on one goal - qualifying for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de janeiro, Brazil.

CONTINUING DOMINANCE

A pair of Stephen F. Austin programs continued to set the standard for the rest of the Southland Conference in 2015-16. In the fall, the Ladyjack soccer team won an uprecedented fifth-straight conference title, successfully completing the “Drive for Five,” as junior AMANDA DOYLE was named the SLC Player of the Year. In the spring, the SFA men’s track team won its second-straight SLC crown, leading to CHARLES MATHENGE, MY’LIK KERLEY and the Lumberjack 4x400 METER RELAY TEAM qualifying for the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon. The 4x400 team established their reputation as one of the top relay squads in the country, posting a school-record time of 3:03.56 to finish first at the West Regionals, leading into another impressive performance at the national meet.

AMERICA’S TEAM

After capturing its fourth-straight Southland Conference championship, SFA won its third-straight SLC tournament title, earning a berth in the 2016 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. The number 14 seed, the Lumberjacks grabbed the attention of the nation with a 70-56 upset over third-seeded West Virginia at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, then came within two seconds of a Sweet 16 appearance before dropping a 76-75 heartbreaker to fourth-seeded Notre Dame. Senior THOMAS WALKUP became a national celebrity in the process, winning over millions of basketball fans.

PRESIDENT DR. BAKER PATTILLO DR. BAKER PATTILLO

UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT 51st Season at SFA | 11th Season as University President

Dr. Baker Pattillo is in his 51st year of service to Stephen F. Austin and his 11th as university president, making SFA a major part of his life for nearly a quarter century. Pattillo was named interim president by a unanimous vote of the SFA Board of Regents during a meeting in July, 2006, following the resignation of Dr. Tito Guerrero. The interim tag was removed shortly thereafter, making Pattillo the 11th president of SFA. A longtime supporter of Lumberjack and Ladyjack athletics in his role as vice president for university affairs, Pattillo has been a constant fixture at SFA athletic events. Upon being named university president, he voiced his intention to remain committed to the students of SFA. “My role has been to serve students and to attend to students’ needs. That role will now be expanded to all areas of the university,” Pattillo said following the Board’s announcement. “Students are the primary reason we are here, so I’ll be focusing on our continued efforts to improve recruitment and retention. I’m looking forward to this and will give my best to the university every day.” Prior to being named president, Dr. Pattillo logged more than 27 years as vice president for university affairs. The Office of University Affairs oversees all athletic programs at SFA. During that time, Dr. Pattillo Dr. Pattillo with Chief Caddo also serves as the university’s institutional representatitive to the NCAA as well as completing a term as president of the Southland Conference. A native of Arp, Texas, Dr. Pattillo began his professional career at SFA in 1966 when he was named assistant director of placement and financial aid. In 1970, he was promoted to the director of the department, serving in that capacity until 1972 when he was named dean of student services. Dr. Pattillo was then promoted to vice president for student affairs in July 1979, with the more comprehensive university affairs designation coming in 1982. A two-time graduate of Stephen F. Austin, Dr. Pattillo received his Bachelor of Science in 1965, followed by his Masters of Education in 1966. He received his Ph.D. in educational administration from Texas A&M University in 1971. A native of Arp, Texas, Dr. Pattillo earned an associate of art degree from Tyler Junior College before enrolling at SFA. Dr. Pattillo and his wife, Dr. Janice Pattillo, who is the chair of the Department of Elementary Education and a professor of elementary education, have one daughter, Paige, who is also an SFA graduate. She then earned her law degree from the University of Texas in 2004 while serving as the feature twirler with both the Lumberjack and Longhorn marching bands.

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR ROBERT HILL ROBERT HILL

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR 30th Season at SFA | 12th Season as Athletic Director

Another Southland Conference Commissioner’s Cup and a national championship make the start of Hill’s third decade at SFA a special one. Now in his 12th year as Director of Athletics, SFA teams have won 46 Southland Conference titles and one NCAA national championship during his tenure. SFA recorded its first NCAA Division I team title during the spring of 2016 when the bowling team defeated Nebraska for the national championship. It was SFA’s first NCAA team title since 1986. The men’s basketball team has been another program that has brought national attention winning its fourth consecutive Southland Conference title in 2016. The Lumberjacks also made their third straight trip to the NCAA men’s tournament where they defeated West Virginia in the second round and lost a one-point decision to Notre Dame in the round of 32. Other highlights from the past year included Southland Conference Championships for soccer and men’s outdoor track. The soccer title was the fifth consecutive SLC championship while the track team recorded its second straight title. Under Hill’s leadership SFA athletic teams have experienced their best years ever highlighted by winning the 2016, 2015, 2012 and 2010 Southland Conference Commissioner’s Cups. The annual award represents the all-sports champion in the Southland Conference. SFA also won the SLC men’s all-sports trophies in 2013, 2011 and 2010 and the SLC women’s all-sports title in 2016, 2015, 2014 and 2010. SFA is only the second school to have swept all three awards in the 50-year history of the Southland Conference in 2010. During the past eleven years SFA teams have made school history. Among the notable athletic achievements are men’s basketball’s four appearances in the NCAA tournament which included wins over VCU and West Virginia; Demi Payne becoming the first SFA athlete to win a NCAA Division I individual title by winning the outdoor pole vault title; the first back to back conference titles for football in 2009 and 2010; ten consecutive women’s conference track titles; five consecutive women’s soccer SLC titles; volleyball’s first NCAA tournament win in 2006; bowling’s NCAA championship. Academic success is major point of emphasis for Hill as 133 student-athletes received degrees during the 2015-16 academic year. Also, 183 SFA student-athletes were named to the Southland Conference Commissioner’s honor roll during the 2015-16 academic year. At the end of the 2016 spring semester, 47% of all SFA student-athletes were maintaining a 3.0 GPA or higher with six teams achieving a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.

SFA teams now wear Under Armour uniforms, shoes and accessories as a result of Hill negotiating a multi-year agreement with the sports apparel giant to become the official outfitter for SFA athletic teams through 2018. Hill also played an important role in creating the “Battle of the Piney Woods” football game between SFA and Sam Houston State at NRG Stadium in Houston. The rivalry game moved from campus locations to the home of the Houston Texans in 2010. More than 27,000 attended the game in 2015. The partnership between Lone Star Sports and Entertainment, SFA and Sam Houston has created one of the top FCS football games of the year with the event now on a three-year rolling agreement because of its success. Facility improvements have been a priority since Hill became director. This fall will mark the debut of a new 80’ video board in Homer Bryce Stadium. The new board will be the largest in the Southland Conference. Major improvements to the William R. Johnson Coliseum will also be new this year. A four-sided video board, video ribbon boards and LED tables are among the newest additions. One of the most ambitious projects became reality last year when the athletic department began producing ESPN3 telecasts of home foot- Hill with 2010 Walter Payton Award winner Jeremy Moses ball, basketball, soccer and volleyball games. A new state of the art facility now produces these telecasts with SFA students providing the manpower. Hill is active on the national scene having served a four-year term on the NCAA Division I Football Championship Committee where he was named chairman during his final year. He also is Chair of the Southland Conference Advisory Council. In 2011 the National Association of Collegiate Director’s of Athletics named him Under Armour Athletic Director of the Year for the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision West Region. Both he and his wife, Brenda, whom he met while attending SFA, are graduates of the University. Their family includes daughter Alix and husband Matt, granddaughter Claire and grandson Carter of Dallas; son Stuart, wife Kathy and grandsons, Blake and Aaron all of Woodbine, Maryland.

SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE

Well into its sixth decade of service, the Southland Conference continues to be a model of innovation, stability and consistent achievement as it celebrates the academic and athletic accomplishments of its member institutions and approximately 4,200 student-athletes. Having commemorated its 50th anniversary in 2013, the Southland Conference has transformed itself into a dynamic and respected consortium of 13 member universities in three states. Beginning with a historic meeting of five institutions in Dallas on March 15, 1963, the Southland Conference set on an extraordinary course that has proven successful well into the 21st Century. The Southland sponsors 17 full championship sports, all at the NCAA Division I level. The eight men’s sports include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis, and indoor and outdoor track and field. The women compete for nine championships in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field, and volleyball.

The conference earns automatic qualification to NCAA championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, football, men’s and women’s golf, women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, and volleyball. The Southland Bowling League, an affiliated Conference sport, originated in 2015, and four of its members filled out half of the eight-team bracket, with Stephen F. Austin capturing the 2016 NCAA national title. The Southland Conference, in conjunction with the city of Frisco, Texas, and Hunt Sports Group, also serves as the host to the NCAA Division I Football Championship Game in Frisco, which has been home to the conference headquarters since 2006. The game is played at Frisco’s Toyota Stadium, and after a successful three-year run, the partnership was rewarded with a three-year renewal to serve as the national championship host site through the 2018 season. While successful on the fields and courts, the Southland Conference has repeatedly demonstrated its commitment to the academic and athletic success of its student-athletes. In addition to providing expanding opportunities for student-athletes, the Southland Conference and its member institutions are very involved in various community outreach programs. Many of these programs provide positive life skills training such as academics, citizenship and leadership to school-aged students in Southland communities.
