IYENGAR YOGA Developed by yoga master B.K.S. Iyengar more than 60 years ago, Iyengar yoga promotes strength, flexibility, endurance and balance through coordinated breathing and poses that require precise body alignment. Equipment like blankets, straps and blocks help the less flexible and also distinguishes Iyengar from other types of yoga. Although Iyengar incorporates the traditional postures, or asanas, that make up the broader category of hatha yoga, the props revolutionized yoga by enabling everyone – even the elderly, sick, and disabled, to practice. Because of its slow pace, attention to detail, and use of props, Iyengar yoga can be especially good if you’re recovering from an injury. No class Nov. 29. SOUTHWEST EXPLORATIONS
Travel near or far for a wonderful exploration of the Southwest. We also teach about the region in a classroom, where we look at ancient and contemporary cultures.
SENSATIONAL NEW MEXICO MURDERS New Mexico did not become a U.S. state for many years. One reason for this was the violence. The West was already known as the Wild West. In New Mexico, violence mixed with economics, greed and politics to become part of the culture. And the culture of violence lasted much longer in New Mexico than elsewhere. Among the many grisly murders, we will discuss John Tunstall leading to the murder of Lincoln County Sheriff Brady, the Territorial Supreme Court Justice in La Fonda, the misadventures of the Archbishop Lamy’s nephew, the shooting of the Santa Fe sheriff and more. Tuesday, 6 to 9 p.m., Dec. 1, 1 day. Course #SW301 01/CRN 21516 Peter Sinclaire, Fee $29
SURVIVAL SKILLS IN THE WILDERNESS This class could save your life. Feel confident hiking New Mexico’s wilderness, ranging from Sonoran desert to arctic alpine life zones. A morning class at 8,600 feet elevation precedes an afternoon hike; putting into practice the techniques learned. Real life examples are cited, where some survived and others didn’t. Favorite topics include lightning, wilderness hazards, weather signs and orienteering with and without a map or compass. Learn endurance techniques, the 10 essentials, first aid shortcuts and more. Sunday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sept. 20, 1 day. Course #SW316 01/CRN 21510 Sunday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Oct. 18, 1 day. Course #SW316 02/CRN 20829 Arthur Judd, Fee $49
ECOLOGY OF PINON/JUNIPER WOODLANDS One of the more dynamic ecosystems, pinon/juniper woodlands display many diverse facets of species interactions. During two walks you’ll encounter multiple levels of ecology, from the pervasive, microscopic crypto-biotic crusts to the global scale of climatic variation. We’ll discuss the interplay of human-induced change, drought, fire, competition/cooperation between pinons and junipers, episodic outbreaks of insects, and why this ecosystem is the most sensitive to small variations in moisture and temperature. Long- and short-term temporal cycles can be seen all around us. Class size is limited to a small number. Students will carpool from SFCC. Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Nov. 7, 1 day. Course #SW317 01/CRN 20839 William Neuwirth, Fee $65
