The Knights enter the 2022 season optimistic return ing some starters on both sides of the ball. Coach Pop pinga said, “The team has had a great off season, and should be able to fill the losses to graduation and make the team competitive.”This year’s squad brings back five offensive starters, while the defense saw greater losses due to graduation. Coach Poppinga is excited about the number of skill players returning, but admits that size on the offensive line, as always, will be a challenge for the Knights. “The offensive line is always an issue for us with the size of our school. We need to figure that position group out to be successful. Our goal will be to grow as a team throughout the season and make a run come playoffs.”While last year’s team was senior laden, this year’s team has only fifteen seniors. According to Poppinga, “We will be depending on our juniors and a few key sophomores to fill the team.” The coaching staff is excited about this year’s team. According to Poppinga, “We had a very productive off season. If we can handle AAA football upfront, we feel we can contend week to week with the very competitive Metro AAA football teams.”

The season opener Dakota Bowl lived up to the hype taking a full three nights to conclude. After the Knights took the field to a packed crowd on Saturday, the skies darkened, and the teams were forced to wait out a rain delay that eventually led to a postponement of the game. Monday, August 30, the teams took the field again in front of a healthy crowd for round two. The game never made it to the second half after yet another weather event led to a second postponement. But, not before Dave Alpers made a heroic one-handed catch that would become the No 1 play on ESPN Sports Center’s top 10 plays. Alpers’ play set up a touchdown run by James Lichty. The score gave the Knights a 7-6 halftime lead before the lightening delay pushed the game to a third evening. On the third day, the Knights finally pulled off the victory on a touchdown pass from Bennett Dannenbring to Emmanuel Struck at the end of the third quarter. Knights 14 Riders 12 in one for the ages. O’Gorman High School won seven state championships during the 2021-22 school year and nine state championships since May of 2021. The success led to the Knights winning the KELO Cup for both the 2020-21 and 2021-22 school years. In an unprecedented show of dominance, eight of these nine champi onships were won by OG female athletic teams. The championships include back-to-back wins in track, cross-country, and volleyball. The string of success started in May of 2021 with the O’Gorman girls track team bringing home the first girls track and field championship in school history. The golf team kept the winning spirit going as Shannon Mc Cormick, Lauren Sutcliffe, and Emily Kolb finished 2, 3, and 4 to lead the Knights to the state girls golf championship in early June. The 2021-22 school year brought more success as the girls crosscountry team raced to their second consecutive state championship at Yankton Trails in October. With Alea Hardie, Libby Castelli and Ruth Pardy finishing 1, 3 and 4, the Lady

Knights accomplished a first for the school – back-to-back cross-country stateNotchampionships.tobeoutdone, on the same day as the state cross-country meet, the competitive cheer team traveled to Brandon to compete in their state championship. At nearly the same time as the Knights were crossing the finish line at Yankton Trails, the cheer team put forth a nearly perfect rou tine to walk away as the 2021 state competitive cheer champions. Just a month later, the volleyball team trav eled to Rapid City in November to de fend their 2020 state championship. Down two sets to Washington in the championship match, the Knights were on the verge of having their dream denied. However, when all hope seemed lost, the Lady Knights dug, passed, and spiked their way to victory in three straight sets to claim the state volleyball championship for the second year in a row. The Lady Knights ended the 2021 fall sports season having claimed three of the five available girls state titles. The seasons changed but the Knights winning ways did not. In early February, the gymnasts would compete in their state tournament in Mitchell. While Audrey Meyer and Maeve Boetel led the Knights, strong performances by Grace Miller and Jadyn Robbins solidified the Knights’ razor thin championship finish over the Mitchell Kernels. This was the sixth championship for the Lady Knights in nine months.
The Washington Warriors had dominated the press throughout the girls’ basketball season with OG’s Lady Knights always viewed as a close second. Heading into the state tournament in Rapid City, the Knights had split with the Warriors during the regular season, and many felt the two teams were destined to meet in the championship game. However, after Jefferson upset Washington in the opening round, the Knights saw their roadmap change a bit. Even tually, the Knights would survive an extremely physical battle with the Rapid City Stevens Raiders to bring home yet another state champion ship.Spring brought another track and field season and, as teams across the state battled the elements meet after meet, it was apparent, that there was no clear favorite heading into the state meet in late May at Howard Wood. With Alea Hardie named most valuable track athlete and Avery Wittry named most valuable field ath lete, the Lady Knights accomplished the unthinkable – back-to-back track and field state championships. The boys golf team brought home a state championship in an exciting two-hole playoff finish in the fall to round out the state titles for the Knights. And, as the 2021-2022 school year drew to a close, the O’Gorman athletic program captured the KELO-Cup award being recognized as the best athletic program in the state for the second consecutive year.
