Dear Friends of O’Gorman Theatre, Welcome to another wonderful performance by our outstanding theatre department. We are truly blessed, not only to have a beautiful theater in which to perform, but also an amazing staff to help our students in all areas, on-stage and off. A special thanks to all of the dedicated and talented staff that lead our students each year. Because of the history of O’Gorman’s Theatre excellence, each class of students feels a sense of pride in living up to and exceeding every expectation with every performance. Something truly magical happens when our students take the stage. This year more than ever we are grateful and excited to be a part of these special moments. Thank you to all who made this performance possible by contributing to the O’Gorman Theatre Department. We are truly blessed to have your continued support of O’Gorman High School and to have you as a member of our community. Enjoy the show!

Online National Success

2020 Oral Interp Team The 2020 National Qualifiers were ready to compete in Albuquerque, New Mexico. However, plans changed and the tournament was moved online for the first time. While so many things were not the same, the students remained true to their craft and embraced the opportunity to compete. Coaching would continue via Zoom from March to June. From their own homes, the students recorded and submitted their presentations to compete with 6,600 competitors from around the nation. In the end, after a week of online competition, the online nationals was a huge success! The team placed Top 20 and received the highest speech team award given - National School of Speech Excellence! We are so proud of the resilience and dedication of every single member of the team that would have been in Albuquerque! Each one worked hard and had to balance work schedules, a pandemic, and so much change in our world. We are blessed with incredible young adults who have shown that they can adapt and manage to handle any challenges that life brings. To give you an idea of their accomplishments there were 1,400 schools, 6,600 competitors and 12,400 performances competing at the National Speech and Debate Nationals. Here are the results. Godspell is about reconciling God and the Bible with our modern world and especially during a pandemic. The subject of God and organized religion has dominated philosophical discussions for centuries; and at this time in history when organized religion is frequently under fire, how can we examine where we are morally and intellectually without looking at how we got here? This is what the Prologue accomplishes, a fascinating survey of some of the influential minds of the western world—Socrates, Thomas Aquinas, Edward Gibbon (English author of The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire), L. Ron Hubbard to name a few. Each philosopher has a verse (each with a different melody) to expound upon God and religion, and their impact on society. Some of the philosophers believe in God; others do not.Yet even the atheists among them admit the profound force of the concept of God. Because the philosophers are presented in (mostly) chronological order, we can see the evolution of religious thought over time. The Prologue segues directly into “Tower of Babble,” in which the philosophers come together in unison to tell us that they are indeed the greatest minds of history and that we should listen to what they have to say. They then proceed to sing their verses again, this time all at once, creating a carefully constructed mosaic of conflicting philosophies. The point is that all these views have combined (as their melodies now have) over time to create the basis for contemporary religious thought; and though many of the ideas are conflicting, they still work together to form a solid foundation on which to build. The Prologue and “Tower of Babble” place both Christ and us, the audience, in historical context. Copyright 1995. Excerpt from Scott Miller’s book, From Assassins to West Side Story

The Show Must Go On

The Performing Arts in a Pandemic Since the start of the pandemic, the performing arts serves as a means of escapism. We saw videos of people who were in quarantine stepping out on their balconies singing or playing instruments. On July 3rd, the Broadway hit “Hamilton” dropped on Disney+. Choirs from around the country spent hours practicing and singing uplifting songs via Zoom. Although times have changed and many challenges exist when it comes to live performances, the arts are striving and finding ways for people to escape the stress or boredom caused by this pandemic. Last April, the O’Gorman staff were missing their students and wanted to reach out to them. Their message would be created through song and dance. Teachers met on Zoom to learn choreography for a music video. Not only did it serve the students but it brought joy to the staff as well. It was therapeutic. The pandemic brings many challenges in regards to safety and numbers but where there is a will, there is a way. The directors are constantly working to bring a sense of normalcy to the students. The performing arts at O’Gorman are not just about the performances but also the bonds that are made in the process. It is important to give the students the same opportunities as years past. For band and choir, the students are up to the challenges and making the changes needed to continue to perform. Special masks have been made and “6 feet” is common, but there are no complaints because the staff and students will do whatever it takes. Facebook Live has become a way to enjoy our Marching Knights performing to limited attendance at competitions. Theatre will continue either live (with social distancing) or online, as major play publishers are now offering live streaming options. It all depends on the show and the current situation. So, it is safe to say that when it comes to the performing arts, whether it be band, choir, or theatre, one thing is certain – the show must go on! The Performing Arts Department at O’Gorman is up to the challenge and is grateful for its dedicated students and support from the community!

Spotlight on Elli Richardson 2019-2020 Thespian Award Winner Major: Accounting/Business at the University of Nebraska Lincoln Favorite Roles: “Sleeping Beauty” in Sleeping Beauty, “Helen” in House for Sale, “Phyllis” in 42nd Street, “Hannah” in Newsies, and being a Student Director Highlights: My time on stage at O’G definitely gave me many different experiences that shaped me to be the young woman I am today. Not only did it teach me how to be confident on stage but it gave me lifelong friendships and people I can call my family from hundreds of miles away. Advice for current students: This may sound cliché, but live every moment in high school to its fullest. You do not always know when the last time your curtain will close. I did not think the 2020 State One Act Festival would be the last time I would perform on the O’Gorman stage, and because of that I wish I would have soaked in every experience I had. During high school, I always thought that there would be another show, but unfortunately our time on stage was cut short. I was hoping to end my high school years with Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat, but unfortunately that was not the case. Accepting that I would not be able to participate in all the special traditions that come with your senior musical was extremely difficult. Live it up while you can! Whether you are a freshman or senior, this is your first or tenth show, take it all in. To those wondering if they should get involved in the department- do it! You belong there, whether it be in the tech booth, the costume shop, or backstage, you will fit right in and find your home. Favorite Memories: Hiding all kinds of random stuff in the ceiling (like the rubber rat skeleton) thinking that Fester was clueless, but of course she knew. I loved going to Perkins with the whole cast on Friday nights. I also loved getting ready at the makeup counter with everyone jamming to music. You could always tell everyone was so excited to start the show. Favorite Traditions: One tradition that I loved was warmups. Not only did they prepare us for the show but they had each of us laughing so hard by the end. Lessons Learned: In doing theater I learned that you always have to be there for others. In the stage sense, you must be on time for your cues or you will leave your castmate on stage alone. This applies to offstage as well. We will always be there for each other no matter the distance or circumstance. O’Gorman was blessed with Elli’s talent on stage and her beautiful personality offstage. We’re proud of you, Elli!! 30
