From the SFCS Board President: Brad Schoenfelder As I page through the annual report I can’t help to be both proud and inspired to belong to the Sioux Falls Catholic School community. Please take a few minutes to review our annual report and see what we have accomplished together. We have had great success in academics, athletics, and the arts in the 2016/17 school year. Our average ACT score exceeded 25 in comparison to a national average of 21. We placed second in girls’ soccer in the fall, were crowned state champions for both boys’ and girls’ basketball in the winter, and girls’ golf closed out the school year with another state title. A record 17 students qualified for the national speech tournament in oral interpretation or debate. We have reversed a seven-year trend in enrollment and have worked hard to narrow the wage gap between our public counterparts for our teachers. Our greatest success however is in shaping our students in their faith journey. This could not have been accomplished without the

help of each and every one of you. We appreciate the time, talent and treasures that you have shared with your Sioux Falls Catholic School system. What you have helped us to achieve is amazing. You belong at Sioux Falls Catholic Schools. We are blessed to have a great group of priests, leaders, educators and support staff that work tirelessly to ensure that our children have an excellent faith filled, educational experience. God has helped us put together a great team. I would like to pass along a special thank you to Robert Wehde and the other administrators, faculty and staff that have served our system and are retiring. Thank you for your service, dedication, and sacrifices that you have provided to make a difference in the lives of our children. We owe you a debt of gratitude. As those that have gone before you, we trust that God will provide us with new leaders to follow in your footsteps. For those past and future leaders I believe that Psalm 37:3 expresses it well, “Trust in the lord and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.” Thank you for your support of Sioux Falls Catholic Schools. May God bless each of you. Brad Schoenfelder SFCS Board Chair

FROM THE BISHOP OF THE SIOUX FALLS DIOCESE Dear Parents, Alumni, and Friends of SFCS, Evangelization has always been at the core of the Church’s mission. Pope Francis has challenged us on this mission. “I expect from you an evangelization with the Word of God which proclaims that Jesus is alive and loves all men,” the Pope proclaimed in 2014. His Holiness went on to further say, “Go out into the street to evangelize, proclaiming the Gospel. Remember that the Church was born ‘in going forth’ that Pentecost morning.” Our Catholic schools remain an excellent tool by which children are taught the Word and shown God’s love and mercy. Catholic schools also uniquely encourage students to go forth and proclaim His love to others. We remain grateful for the many SFCS alumni who through witness and word spread the message of God’s love to others in their various careers. Their example reminds us of the formation they have received from their families, parishes and their Sioux Falls Catholic Schools experience. I am very grateful to the men and women who sacrificially serve as teachers, administrators and support staff. A special thank you to our benefactors whose generous contributions help make Catholic education affordable and accessible. One-hundred years ago this year the first class from Cathedral High School graduated. For a century now, students of the Sioux Falls Catholic Schools have been encouraged to live their faith as both young persons and adults, whatever the vocation to which God has called them and they have joyfully done so. Your support has made it possible. Thank you. May God bless you and your families and may the Sioux Falls Catholic Schools family continue as missionaries to spread the good news of Jesus Christ. Yours in Christ, Most Reverend Paul J. Swain Bishop of Sioux Falls

From the President: Robert Wehde Dear Friends, Gratitude: the quality of being thankful. As we wrap up another school year and the end of my time here at Sioux Falls Catholic Schools, I find myself reflecting on the past three years. Since coming to SFCS, I have felt so much gratitude for being able to have been part of this extraordinary community. The passion for Catholic education I have witnessed by our teachers, administrators and supporters is incredible and a testament to the vision of those who so expertly crafted this model 25+ years ago. As I head off to enjoy retirement with my wife, Kolleen, my daughters and their families, I have many to thank. First of all, to the SFCS Board members who put their faith and support in me during these past three years. Your constant work to keep our “community of faith and excellence” strong is truly appreciated. Keep up the great work! My sincerest thanks to my predecessor, Dr. Tom Lorang, who helped guide me and provided insight in my new role as your president. Tom, you helped create an incredible model of successful Catholic education that is second to none in the country. Your friendship means so much. To our administrators, teachers and support staff, thank you for your dedication and commitment to our families and students. As it reads in Colossians 3:24: …you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. We are so grateful to you for all you do. To the parents of our students, my special thanks to you for putting your trust in the Sioux Falls Catholic Schools by enrolling your children. We know what an investment this is for you, and we have never taken your trust lightly. We also know that you will see great dividends on your investment as your children grow into adulthood. Lastly, a heartfelt thank you to our faithful benefactors who so generously give of their treasures to ensure that more than 2,600 students each year not only receive an unparalleled education, but get to hear every single day about Jesus and His love for them. What a precious gift you are giving to our students. Your investment is making a tremendous difference in the lives of children and families. While I will miss this community and the many wonderful people I have met, my heart is filled with gratitude. Many blessings to you and your families. Sincerely, Robert R. Wehde President, SFCS

From the Director of Development: Susanne Halverson – Gale ‘94 Having been in this position of Development Director for the SFCS for less than a year, I want to say thank you to all of the volunteers and families who support our system. As a fellow SFCS parent, I know the commitment that it takes to send your children to Catholic schools. For those of you who are new to the system… here are some thoughts I’d like to share:

All of the events and appeals listed support each of our EIGHT schools in the Sioux Falls Catholic School system.

Without the fundraising through the Development Office, tuition would be hundreds of dollars higher for every SFCS student.

Buying tickets to any of our SFCS events - including Dakota Bowl and Extravaganza - helps pay teacher salaries. You can also support our schools by purchasing SFCS certificates, buying food at a tailgate, playing golf in the Golf Classic or running in the Shamrock Run. There are so many opportunities to support our schools. Your involvement helps everyone! We invite all of our families to join us throughout the year. Your involvement helps contribute to our success and helps you feel so much more connected to the school.

Please consider inviting new people to join you at our community events at your individual schools and at the O’Gorman campus. Personal invitations are the best way to build our SFCS family.

ou belong. You’ve likely seen the phrase often over the past year or two in our SFCS marketing pieces. There is truth in the phrase, though. When you become part of the Sioux Falls Catholic Schools, you become part of our community. “You Belong” is about inviting new families to join our community. This past year, we challenged our families and staff members to invite and encourage their friends and neighbors with children to check us out. Jamey and Cherrlyn Pickering transferred their daughter, Payton, to the Sioux Falls Catholic Schools from another school. “We were looking for a school that had traditional academics and values. We had done our own homework on SFCS, but mainly visited with several parents of students - some who have been a part of SFCS for their entire school career as well as families who had made the transition from other schools. The feedback was all the same - strong academics, strong organization and communication, strong values, strong sense of community,” said Cherrlyn. As a result of the focused efforts, we had an increase in enrollment for the first time in seven years. “Word of mouth is what gets new families interested in our schools,” says Jenni Struck, SFCS Director of Admissions. “Our parents are the best marketers for our schools. They know what our community is

all about and the kind of education their children are receiving.” Higher enrollment numbers also help with the overall budget for our school system. “It helps us do more for salaries,” says Struck. As an added incentive for staff, if enrollment exceeded a certain goal this past year, they would be given a bonus in the fall. Because the enrollment goal was surpassed, staff members received an 8.5% raise, and an enrollment bonus on top of it! Now that the Pickerings have joined our community, we know they’ll be out sharing the positive things they’ve experienced. “I think the genuine concern for the students’ overall success is what we have felt the most,” says Cherrlyn, “not only in the academic arena, but in many other areas as well. We have felt very welcomed as a new family to the system, both by faculty and other families. The transition to SFCS has been a pleasant experience and we feel confident we are making a great investment in our child’s future by having her be a part of this community.” So – if you’re out there and are talking to friends and neighbors who have children that are not in our schools, make sure to share the benefits of Sioux Falls Catholic Schools to them. And if you’re already sharing the good news, thank you!

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Michelle Katen To the SFCS Community, Our families and supporters made an incredible statement about the importance of retaining and recruiting the best teachers for our classrooms. For two consecutive years, the Sioux Falls Catholic Schools annual giving increased by 50% with an additional $500,000 being raised to directly impact salaries. Congratulations are in order! This is an incredible accomplishment for two reasons. First, our teachers and staff knew they were a priority for the 2016-17 school year when they received an unprecedented 8½% salary increase along with a bonus from the increased enrollment. Maintaining that increase means committing to the annual fundraising of $500,000 and our families have not backed down. The second reason that this is so incredible is the manner in which it was done. This was a grass roots effort by many! Over 500 families (most of whom are already paying tuition) contributed to this initiative to make this a reality for our teachers. We are still working to grow endowments for teachers’ salaries to relieve the annual fundraising requirement... and the goals are lofty. I ask that you continue to prayerfully consider how you might contribute to the efforts to support Sioux Falls Catholic Schools greatest assets, our staff… the people who make our mission come to life each day in our schools. A heartfelt thank you to those who are already helping make a difference. You are a part of the continuing legacy of our community. Please contact me at the SFCS Foundation Office at 575-3362 if you’d like to get involved.

Connecting with Fr. Krzyzopolski We are so blessed in our community to have the wonderful support of our pastors and associate pastors. They come into our schools regularly, celebrate mass and other sacraments with us, and provide guidance through the SFCS Board. We also have a number of priests who, although now retired, still remain very connected to us.

because he was a priest whose schooling was paid for by others. “I don’t know why we expect our teachers to be paid less just because they teach in Catholic schools when we ask them to do things above and beyond their public school counterparts,” says Fr. Al. “We need to pay them a just wage. And so far we have not done a great job in that area.”

Fr. Al Krzyzopolski recently turned 93 years old and has been pastor at several local parishes. You’ll still find him filling in at parishes when needed, but in his spare time loves to follow the Knights sports activities. He even went to Rapid City this spring to cheer on the Knights boys and girls’ basketball teams at the State Tournament. “I’m still so interested in O’Gorman. I am interested in sports in general – that’s one of my hobbies in my old age. One gets acquainted with the players and their families and you almost become part of their basketball family. It’s nice to join them and cheer for the team.”

At various meetings with potential donors for the Staff Salary Initiative, Fr. Al always spoke about the need to do more for our teachers. “Their devotion to the students and the system as a whole is an even greater contribution because of the many years they spend at the school. Some teachers have worked 20-30+ years and have given so much, not just cash, but their hearts and their energies, which is a tremendous contribution.” As an extension of his gratitude, Fr. Al recently established an endowment with the Sioux Falls Catholic Schools to benefit teacher salaries. “If I’m going to get up and talk to people about why they should be giving, I need to do it myself. I must practice what I preach.”

As a former teacher at O’Gorman decades ago, Fr. Al was paid basically nothing to teach, but says he felt like that was one way he could pay back the Catholic education he received growing up. But Fr. Al feels that his was a different situation

We truly appreciate your support of our schools, our students and our teachers, Fr. Al, and are so grateful that you are part of our SFCS family!

FOUNDATION CHAIR Travis Thie Dear SFCS Foundation Friends and Family, Thanks to your contributions, of both time and funding, we have had another very successful year! We continue to focus on the Teacher and Staff Salary Initiative. These initial years have shown that we are dedicated to continue the goals of this initiative and as a result we are showing our staff that we appreciate their expertise, abilities and beliefs. As we have explained, this will be an ongoing mission for years to come. The upshot of our continued efforts will be the advantages gained by our students in furthering their education, character and core values. In the year ahead, the Foundation will continue to champion this plan and strive to embolden our teachers to provide the best Christian education possible. Your gifts and prayers will aid in making this possible as it does each and every year. Thank you again for your continued monetary support, volunteerism and prayers. The Sioux Falls Catholic School system is a special community of people; when we are working together the possibilities are limitless. Sincerely, Travis A. Thie

Cumulative Giving

Gifts to SFCS Corporation or SFCS Foundation reflected in this publication were received since 1987 when we purchased software that allowed us to better track donations. Every effort has been made to ensure accuracy. However, due to the vast number of donations made directly to schools and/or churches, there may be some inconsistencies or some donations that may not have been recorded. If there are discrepancies, please accept our apology and bring any errors to our attention so that we may correct our records. Remember, however, that these cumulative gifts only represent the previous 30 years, as we do not have recorded gifts prior to that time. Thank you for your continued support of Sioux Falls Catholic Schools and may God bless you for your generosity!

Bishop Level Bishop Lambert Hoch Bishop Lambert Hoch, installed as the fifth Bishop of Sioux Falls in 1956, worked hard to foster ecumenical relations with other faiths in the state. He led a visionary group of priests and lay people to expand the influence of the Catholic Church in South Dakota, beginning with the building of O’Gorman High School. Bishop Hoch knew that Cathedral High School was turning away students because of a lack of space. He chose a piece of property southwest of the city in an alfalfa field for the new school. Many questioned his choice of location, calling it “Hoch’s Folly”. Fifty years later, O’Gorman High School has become the center of the community and sits at now what is considered one of the state’s busiest intersections. More than two decades after his death, we think Bishop Hoch would be pleased to see O’Gorman’s great emphasis on faith, service, and excellence. Members of the Bishop Level are honored for their cumulative gifts to the Sioux Falls Catholic Schools since 1987 of $1,000,000 or more:

Religious Leader Level Fr. James P Morgan Ordained on June 22, 2001, Fr. Morgan’s first assignment was Associate Pastor at Holy Spirit Parish where he served two years. Then, after two years at Northern State University in Aberdeen, he returned to become Pastor of Holy Spirit from 2005 to 2015. He is now completing his second year as Rector of the Cathedral of St. Joseph. While at Holy Spirit, Fr. Morgan went into the classrooms every week to visit with the students and do a short catechetical teaching. He has also enjoyed being part of the masses at O’Gorman Jr. High and High School. Fr. Morgan also serves on the SFCS Board and a variety of committees. He is passionate about Catholic education because of the impact it has on the community. “The affect is immeasurable. It is a daily reminder to the Sioux Falls community that we are at the service of God, and, at the service of each other. To see a Catholic school, physically, is a constant reminder of our duty as Christians to be citizens of heaven here on earth,” says Morgan. He also sees the impact Catholic education has on creating responsible and virtuous citizens and the potential of transforming our community for the better in a significant way. “Catholic education challenges students and even their parents to be leaders within our community. It promotes a sense of service that is vocational; to go beyond mere contribution and into the area of influence for the good of God, country and community.” Having a school attached to the parish gives it additional life and great vitality, according to Fr. Morgan. “Students, faculty and staff contribute to the spiritual growth of a parish, as well as to its emotional/environmental well-being. It gives the pastor the opportunity to teach the faith in another context besides Sunday Mass, bible study, or within a religious ed. program. Because those children are there daily, you are able to exercise the ‘spiritual father/spiritual child’ relationship constantly, in good times and in bad, which gives priesthood its richness.” Whether it be faith or academics, Fr. Morgan says Sioux Falls Catholic Schools speak for themselves. “Dedicated people at all levels from faculty and staff, to parents and donors are the key to SFCS successes, and will continue to be. My hope is that we will continue to be that united, Catholic presence that is so vital to the community and the world. My hope is that students will more and more embrace their Catholic identity and be proud of it. ‘Go therefore and make disciples of all nations.’” (Mt. 28:19)

Legacy Level Truman Pins There is a poem that reads, in part, “You can shed tears that he is gone or you can smile because he has lived.” Such can be said about Truman Pins, who lived one year and one month on this earth, but whose life will now be remembered for generations because of a scholarship set up through the SFCS Foundation. Truman, the son of O’Gorman graduate Justin Pins ’04 and his wife, Andrea, was born with an extra chromosome – commonly referred to as Down Syndrome. With the diagnosis came many complications, surgeries and illnesses, ultimately ending his life on March 28th of this year. One common fear in families who have lost a loved one, particularly a child, is that the child won’t be remembered into the future. Ashley (Pins) Kayser ’04, Truman’s aunt, and her dad (grandpa to Truman), Jud Pins, wanted to make sure that Truman’s legacy of love will live on. “We talk about him often,” says Ashley. “I hope my kids don’t ever forget him.” After Truman’s passing, members of the Pins family met with SFCS Foundation Exec. Director Michelle Katen to establish a scholarship for special needs children attending Sioux Falls Catholic Schools. The first Truman James Pins Scholarship will be awarded to a SFCS student this coming school year. “We wanted to do something to continue his legacy. It’s all about inclusion,” said Jud. “This was a challenge you never expect as a family. Our family has been truly blessed and Truman was one more blessing we shared. Truman opened all of our minds and hearts. All of the time that he was sick, he was still so happy.” Ashley and Jud say Truman had a huge impact on their family in the short time that he lived. He’s been described as joyful, stubborn, determined, resilient, but mostly empathetic. “He’d cry whenever he heard anyone else crying,” says Ashley. He’d pat the backs or hands of others to comfort them, and was remarkably sensitive to someone having a bad day. He shared hugs and kisses freely and often. Truman was, simply, a gift to the Pins family. And they want others to know what a gift he was. The Truman James Pins Scholarship will ensure that others will know of his great capacity for love in his short life. What a wonderful legacy he leaves.

Principal Level Regan Manning Holy Spirit Principal Regan Manning earned his BS in Elementary Education from USD and his MA in Education Administration (PK12). He has been a teacher in the Yankton Public School District and coached wrestling and football. He later served as Principal of Sacred Heart Elementary (grades PK-4) and Sacred Heart Middle School (grades 5-8) from 2007 until 2014 when he left to come to SFCS and Holy Spirit School. The SFCS community happily welcomed Manning and his family, including his wife, Julie, a teacher at O’Gorman Junior High, and two daughters, Maddie and Ava. “We’ve been welcomed with open arms. It is truly rewarding working in a community where Christ is at the center of everything you do, and working beside people that have the same mindset as you.” In addition to their own daughters, Regan and Julie have served as parents to numerous foster children over the last five years, many with whom they still keep in contact. Manning’s passion for working with kids is evident in everything he does, and he works hard to make connections with all of the students in his school. “I love getting to know each and every one of them, visiting and chatting with them during drop off times. I make a conscious effort to try and get to know all of our parents on a first name basis as well.” As a way to motivate his students over the summer, Manning comes up with creative ways to get them to read. “I like to motivate kids by doing silly reading challenges each summer. I’ve slept on the roof, been taped to the wall, made into an ice cream sundae, and been bombed by water balloons. The kids completing the challenge this summer will get a chance to dunk me in a dunk tank this fall.” Mr. Manning says he is especially grateful for the opportunity, as principal, to be part of the SFCS system. “The system concept is an awesome design. Coming from an outlying diocesan school that didn’t have the opportunity to share resources like we can here is something I envied from the outside. Now, from the inside, I am extremely grateful for it. I am able to dedicate more time and energy to working with the students and teachers of Holy Spirit than I was ever able to do at Sacred Heart because of these shared resources.”

Educator Level Ms. Jan McEntee

If you consider how the world has changed over the past 50 years, one can only imagine how one SFCS teacher’s job has changed since she started teaching 49 years ago. Jan McEntee earned her two year teaching certificate from Presentation College and was hired immediately after interviewing with Msgr. Leonard Sullivan to teach 3rd grade at St. Mary School, with a starting salary of $3,900. While her physical classroom has moved from its original location in the school, she’s still teaching her 3rd graders the basics – reading, writing, arithmetic, and the love of Jesus. “Religion is so ingrained in everything I teach. When they’re struggling with something, I ask them, ‘Have you prayed about it? Have you asked Jesus to help you?’” McEntee says she encourages her students to see that Jesus is always there, helping them with all of life’s joys and challenges. McEntee says this will be her final year at the school, but not because she doesn’t still love it. “I have too many health issues. It will be a tough year, but I’m not doing this alone. This is a mission I’ve been on with the Lord for 50 years. I made a promise to Him and know He’ll be with me every step of the way.” Changes over the years have been many. She’s worked under at least six different principals, seen many fellow teachers come and go, and has had the children of former students come through her class as well, with many commenting, “You had my mom!” or “You had my dad way back when.” She’s also seen the integration of technology in the classroom. “That’s been my biggest challenge,” she admits. “God bless the people who have helped me with it.” She’s also seen her class sizes fluctuate over the years from 16 to 36 students and every size in-between. Legendary for the great hugs she gives to her students (and many former students, young and old), Miss Mac, as she is lovingly called, says she appreciates recent efforts to increase teacher salaries. While she knows it won’t affect her as much, she knows of quality teachers who had to leave to take jobs that paid more. “They work incredibly hard.” For Miss Mac, teaching was never about getting financially rich. Instead, she found rich blessings in her work with students. “I’ve loved helping them grow in their relationship with God and teaching them the virtues of faith, hope and love. It’s never been about the money; it’s always been about the mission.” Miss Mac, thank you for blessing our students and families for the past 49 years!

Alumni Level Joe Salem, ‘56 When Joe Salem was a young boy, his father – Nusier Salem, longtime Cathedral football coach (1937-1953) told him, “Nobody owes you anything. Anything you get, you’ll have to earn.” Salem says his dad taught him to work hard at whatever you are doing to find success, and that it will never be handed to you. It was a lesson Joe took to heart. Nusier also taught Joe great lessons about helping others who need it. After graduating from Cathedral, where he had a very successful athletic career, Joe attended Iowa State, and then transferred to the University of Minnesota. There he played on the 1960 team that won the national title and played in the Rose Bowl. After graduating, he was hired by the U of M to join their coaching staff. He coached there five years, then went on to be the head coach at the University of South Dakota, and later Northern Arizona University. He went back to U of M for a few more years before finally returning to Sioux Falls to finish raising his family. His two youngest sons, Brent and Brad, were just starting high school so they enrolled at O’Gorman. There, both had great success as players, helping to lead the Knights to the 1986 state title. While Joe’s boys have been out of school now nearly 30 years, Joe’s commitment to the Sioux Falls Catholic Schools has never waned. When his father, Nusier, passed away, Joe donated memorial monies to help athletes who needed some financial help to attend O’Gorman. Over the years, Joe has continued to donate to grow the fund, eventually establishing the Nusier Salem Scholarship. The scholarship goes to a football player who needs help to attend O’Gorman. “I want to help kids like my dad did.” Joe says way back in the Cathedral days when his dad was coaching, there were many young players who didn’t have the funds to purchase their football shoes or other needed items. Joe found out that his dad, who never received any compensation for coaching at Cathedral, often just sent those kids to the local sporting goods store and told them to get their shoes and he’d take care of the bill. As Joe learned over time, his dad helped a lot of North End kids who didn’t have much. Now, in gratitude for the education and experiences his boys received at O’Gorman, Joe wants to continue to do what his dad did 70+ years ago - help kids. What a wonderful legacy.

Patron Level Pat and Kaye Lawler With five biological and two adopted children, Pat and Kaye Lawler have been fixtures at events at St. Mary’s and O’Gorman for many years. Oldest son Sean graduated in 2008, Maggie in ’09, Kara in ’11, Brian in ’13, Elena in ’15, and the last of the clan, Alexei and Rudy, graduated in 2017. For the Lawlers, the initial reasons they enrolled their children were because it was convenient and connected to their parish of St. Mary’s. “As we continued, we came to appreciate the small size, family atmosphere and the continuity of their Faith experience from church and home,” says Kaye. Both Kaye and Pat have been involved in various school events, fundraisers and activities/sports in volunteer positions. “We understand that parents are vital in supporting a private school, but being involved in our children’s activities has offered us the opportunity to meet and really get familiar with other parents and faculty.” The Lawlers say their children have truly benefited from their Catholic education through SFCS. “They have been offered many opportunities for continuing their faith, as well as extracurricular activities such as oral interp, band and various sports. Our children had a range of talents and needs. Two of our children were adopted at ages 7 and 9; requiring learning to speak English! Mrs. Tielke and St. Mary School accommodated their needs and gave them extra assistance. Some of our children benefited from academic services, and others by taking AP classes.” Pat and Kaye are supporting the SFCS Staff Salary Initiative because it is critical to help our teachers, those teaching now and those in the future. “There were faculty members who went that extra mile for our kids that needed additional help. The thing that clinched it was when someone said that they were discouraging their children from going into education because it would be so difficult to support a family. We wondered who would be teaching future generations.” While all of the Lawler children have now graduated from SFCS, Pat and Kaye say they will always be a part of our community. “We’ve formed a lifelong connection to Sioux Falls Catholic Schools.” We’re so glad that the Lawlers chose SFCS and have become such a great part of our community!

Student Level Emily Kassing, ‘18

You may not know her by name, but if you’ve ever attended mass or many activities at Holy Spirit Parish, you’ve undoubtedly seen her there volunteering on a very regular basis. Emily can be found there serving as an usher, lectoring or distributing Holy Communion. She might be working with kids in the youth group or one of many other church activities and fundraisers. At O’Gorman, you might find her making costumes for the musical or performing with the Marching Knights. She’s been a Student Ambassador, peer tutor, and member of the Oral Interp team, and somehow finds the time to work at a local grocery store. Yes, Emily is one very busy lady. She’s also very bright. In addition to all of her many activities at school, church and work, this National Honor Society inductee maintains a 4.4 GPA and scored an astounding 35 on the ACT test (which means she scored better than roughly 99.5% of the two million or so students who took the test this past year). Emily says she is very appreciative of the Sioux Falls Catholic Schools community and, in particular, her teachers over the years. “At every level you can tell that they care about you and are concerned about your future.” She says her teachers and administrators have valued her opinions and have always challenged her to do her very best in school. “They challenge you in a good way; they push you to be better.” Having her faith enriched by the community has impacted her life as well. “I’ve been surrounded by people who are strong role models and who help you grow in your faith.” No matter where life takes this future forensic scientist, Emily says she will always treasure the people she’s been blessed to attend school with over the years. “I’ve met a lot of really amazing people. I’ll take with me that mission of love, and the knowledge that I should try to be a positive influence in the world.” We know you will, Emily!

PhilanthroCorp: Fr. Jerome Holtzman – Once a Knight, Always a Knight It’s been over 50 years since self-proclaimed ‘avid Knights fan’ Fr. Jerome Holtzman started teaching at O’Gorman. On the faculty for just four years, Fr. Jerry taught foreign language, religion and film studies. In those four short years, however, he connected with his students and fellow staff members in such an intense way that 48 years later, he remains interested and involved with what’s going on in our schools. “I feel a tremendous sense of loyalty to the school to this day,” says Fr. Holtzman. The 86 year old recently went through the PhilanthroCorp process, a service offered through the SFCS Foundation. This process lets donors meet with the independent company to take a look at their will and estate planning needs. “It was a revelation to me in terms of what I actually had in terms of assets, every little insurance policy, my car, etc.” said Fr. Holtzman. “I hadn’t really seen it in black and white like that.” Fr. Jerry said it really helped him get organized and to know he now has a well thought out estate plan in place. Holtzman said he really appreciated the confidentiality he felt when considering the financial information he was sharing with the PhilanthroCorp representative. “I felt very confident in the process. I would certainly recommend it.” Fr. Holtzman, now celebrating his 60th anniversary as a priest, says his love for O’Gorman goes back to the days he taught there, and the many students and outstanding faculty members that he connected with in a special way. He says he saw a true sense of social awareness and concern for the poor there, something that remains true today. While Fr. Jerry hasn’t lived in Sioux Falls for quite some time, his passion for O’Gorman and the Knights remains steadfast. “I was asked several years ago when O’Gorman was playing Watertown for a state title who I was cheering for,” says Holtzman, who now lives in Watertown. He replied, “I’m cheering for Watertown, but I’m praying for O’Gorman.” Fr. Jerry – we truly appreciate your longtime support! To explore how PhilanthroCorp can be a blessing to you and your family, please visit our website at www.sfcss.org/philanthrocorp and fill out the form under “Personalized Assistance.” A representative from PhilanthroCorp will call you to set up a consultation with one of their estate specialists. The services of PhilanthroCorp are provided to you on behalf of Sioux Falls Catholic Schools Foundation.

Fr. Holtzman with Michelle Katen, Exec. Dir. of the Foundation.

SFCS Foundation Invested Funds

Investment Policy Investment decisions are made using the following investment guidelines: •

The long term investment objective is to achieve a total return equal to or in excess of the sum of the desired spending rate, allowances for inflation, management fees and related costs, and an appropriate growth factor.

The target asset allocations for the investment portfolio are set forth in the table below.

To maintain the proper allocation, it is the policy of the Foundation to periodically rebalance the portfolio in the event any asset class allocation differs by more than 20% of the stated target.

A Spending Rate not to exceed 4% of the investment portfolio’s market value each year is appropriate to meet the needs of SFCS. The rate is reviewed periodically in light of evolving trends within the economy.

No more than 10% of an active manager’s portfolio can be invested in any one security. This does not apply to U.S. Government or agency issues.

All fixed income securities will be of investment grade.

Social and moral guidelines will be followed to encourage those corporations that promote the common good, and to avoid investing in companies which flagrantly jeopardize world peace or race relations, flout traditional Catholic ethics or ignore equal opportunities for all people.
