KNIGHTS WIN
STATE TITLE! Cover: Team photo provided by Argus Leader
The Knights football program has a long history of success. This season was no exception. After a 14 year state football title drought, the O’Gorman Knights won their first-ever 11AAA state football title and their first state football title since 2005. It was the first state title championship for coach Jayson Poppinga with the O’Gorman Knights but was the 9th state football title won in the school’s history. Poppinga started coaching for O’Gorman in 2016, taking over for long-time coach Steve Kueter. Alongside Coach Poppinga was a team of outstanding assistant coaches that helped in shaping this state championship team. Shannon Poppinga, Vinnie Olsen, Alex Anderson, Austin Wagner, Greg McKinstry, Layne Hohn, Alexander Gray and Barry Nagel all assisted Coach Poppinga in leading the Knights to victory. The Knights finished the 2019 season with an impressive 10-2 record and a championship win.

The Knights were off to a rough start early in the season with multiple injuries to starting players. With a tough loss at Dakota Bowl XLI to No. 2 seeded Brandon Valley, the Knights were in for a battle to the state title. They would get their chance at redemption when they met Brandon Valley again for the state championship game. After two losses in the first four games of the season, the Knights fought back hard to string together eight consecutive wins. These wins included a playoff game against Harrisburg, No. 1 ranked Roosevelt and, of course, the 21-16 state championship victory over the defending state champions, Brandon Valley.

The championship game was certainly a nail-biter with six lead changes within the first three quarters. The first half was slow going with only one touchdown on the board for the Knights at halftime. O’Gorman trailed the Lynx 10-7 going into the second half. The Knights turned up the heat in the 3rd quarter, scoring two more touchdowns. The defense held strong only allowing another six points for Brandon Valley and a final 4th down to secure the win within the final minutes of the game. It was a very exciting game for all. The Knights fans cheered with joy as the final seconds counted down to an O’Gorman victory. The Knights averaged 32.5 points per game with a total of 390 points in total for the season. They netted 2,185 rushing yards for the season with an average of 5.2 yards per rush. Passing yardage totaled 2,365 for the season with an average of 197.1 yards per game passing and a total of 18 touchdowns passing for the season. In the state quarterfinal game against Harrisburg, a 97 yard pass from senior quarterback, Zach Norton, to junior running back, Conor Pavelko, sealed the win for the Knights and was the longest play from scrimmage in O’Gorman history! The Knights’ remarkable defensive performance also held Brandon Valley to their lowest offensive total for the season with under 100 yards rushing. The 2019 team was comprised of 64 total varsity players, 25 of which were seniors. That’s the most seniors Poppinga has had on the team since he has been with the Knights! Senior players included Ronnie Bargmann, Lucas Berthelsen, Jacob Byrd, Jordan Dahl, Jacob Doeden, KG Gebreziabher, Kaden Hackman, Gunnar Jones, Logan Jones, Alex Kowalczyk, Drew Krouse, John Kunkel, Joe Larson, Joe Mattecheck, Cade Mikuska, Zach Norton, Daniel Ratzloff, Tip Reiman, Grant Smith, Liam Sorensen, Will Washenberger, Patrick Wilde, Tate Wishard, Jonah Wuebben and Jacob Wuestewald.

“...I love my teammates. I could not ask for better friends and brothers. Relationships like this helped carry us to that state title.”
Photo: Argus Leader
- Tip Reiman Team unity definitely was a key factor in driving this team to the state championship. Senior wide receiver and defensive back, Logan Jones, said “I feel like the biggest help to our victories this year was our true center around being a team. We didn’t need to rely on any one player. We always had different guys to make plays and get the momentum on our side, which ultimately won us the state title.” Senior wide receiver and defensive end, Tip Reiman, agrees saying, “I believe one of the biggest contributing factors for us winning this title was our camaraderie that we, as a whole, had. As everyone knows, we started out rough against Brandon Valley in the championship game, but because of our relationships we created with each and every guy on the team, we were able to stay up and able to take it to them in the next parts of that game. We built up such meaningful relationships with one another through the sum of every single workout, practice, lifting session, film session, social time and even at school. We are completely able to rely on one another and I feel those bonds were very evident when Brandon put us to the test on November 15th. I love my teammates. I could not ask for better friends and brothers. Relationships like this helped carry us to that state title.” Although there wasn’t any one player that was the key to their success, there were plenty with notable statistics for the season. Senior running back and linebacker, Tate Wishard, led the Knights with an impressive 25 touchdowns for a total of 150 points for the season. Senior defensive back, Kaden Hackman, had 4 interceptions throughout the season. Senior quarterback, Zach Norton, accounted for 755 total receiving yards for the season and senior wide receiver and defensive end, Tip Reiman, averaged 14.4 yards receiving.

Go Give OG Day is a daylong giving challenge. We challenge all of YOU to help us reach our goal of $50K in one day! All funds raised that day will go to support tuition assistance for students at all eight Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools. Did you know one in four students at Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools receives tuition assistance? That means over $1.4 million is allocated to financial aid. This financial aid is awarded through grants and scholarships. Without these options, many of our families would not see Catholic education as an option for their children.
On Friday, May 1st —beginning at 8am (CDT)— we will be raising money for 24 hours for our tuition assistance fund. Keep an eye out for the social media campaign that day which will include class challenges and matching gift ‘POWER HOURS’ to help us reach our goal. Last year, we surpassed our goal and raised a total of $55,473! Let’s help even more students at Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools and raise even MORE money this year! Mark your calendars and get ready for an epic day of giving! When we all come together as a community, we can truly make wonderful things happen. Every dollar makes a difference and helps us make a difference in the life of a student.

Catholic Schools Week 2020 Catholic Schools Week is an annual celebration of Catholic education in America. It’s a time that we reflect on the opportunities our schools provide to share in our faith with one another. Going to a Catholic school allows students and staff to practice their faith and celebrate it together. We help one another grow in our relationship with God through daily prayer, Mass, the celebration of Sacraments, community service and so much more. The National Catholic Schools Week theme is “Catholic Schools, Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed.” This theme perfectly depicts what Catholic schools all over the country strive for. To learn not only the regular academic curriculum but to also learn more about our faith and to grow in it. To serve one another, just as Jesus did and calls us to do. To lead by example in doing what is right. To succeed not only academically but in all areas of life. This theme is also depicted in this year’s Catholic Schools Week t-shirts, sponsored by Avera. Special thanks to Avera for their generosity and continued support of our Catholic Schools Week celebration! This year was also the last all-school Catholic Schools Week Mass that we celebrated with Bishop Paul J. Swain. Bishop Swain is now retired, and we welcome Bishop Donald DeGrood as he was ordained and installed on February 13, 2020 as the new Bishop of the Diocese of Sioux Falls. I had the opportunity to sit down with Bishop Swain before Catholic Schools Week to talk to him about the importance of this national celebration, as well as his service to the Diocese of Sioux Fallss and his plans for retirement.
8
Bishop Swain highlighted what makes Catholic Schools Week special, stating, “It’s important to raise up the beauty of Catholic schools into broader context. It’s also an opportunity to say thank you to all those that make Catholic schools possible. The staff, teachers, families, benefactors and administrators. It takes a lot of people to make it all work. I’m very appreciative of all those who make our Catholic schools possible.” He also spoke about the importance of receiving a faith-based education as a Catholic, saying, “Being able to openly share the faith and to pray and doing it in all the areas of academics and extracurricular activities. Faith permeates everything and that’s a real gift.” He also shared some good advice for newly ordained Bishop DeGrood, “I would encourage him to get to know the schools and the folks who make it possible. Spend time with all those who make it possible. Be with the kids. One of the things I’ve enjoyed over the years is to go to the Catholic schools and they (the kids) ask questions. It’s a lot of fun. So I encourage him to be present. Particularly for the kids. I wish I could have done it more. I really enjoyed it.” Bishop Swain also talked about the most rewarding parts of his service to the Diocese of Sioux Falls over the last 13 years saying, “I just think it’s being part of the family of faith here in the Diocese; being with people, with the faithful, getting to know them and walking with them; journeying with them in a spiritual way. It’s really seeing their faith and people growing in their faith, at all ages.” When it came to his retirement, Bishop Swain said, “We’ll see where God leads me.” He plans to do some ministry at the VA Hospital as well as at the Bishop Dudley House here in Sioux Falls. We are very thankful for the time we have had with Bishop Swain. We are grateful for his guidance, leadership and service over the years, and we look forward to the years to come with Bishop DeGrood as he takes his journey with the Diocese of Sioux Falls as a newly ordained Bishop.

The 10x12 Alumni Giving Program is an easy, affordable way to pass on the gift of a Catholic education. For just $10/month, you can help a family send their child to our schools. With a growing number of requests every year, we are striving to provide a better opportunity for more students.
One hundred percent of the proceeds go towards tuition assistance for students at all eight of the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools. Fifty percent goes into a fund to help current students and the other 50% goes into an endowment for future students. Help a student receive the Catholic education you also received and consider a gift to our 10x12 Alumni Giving Program today! No student receives full tuition assistance but even a little help makes a world of difference to many families.

I know how much work teachers put in to helping our kids become good people for all of our futures.” - Rudy Navarrete, owner of Rudy Navarrete’s Tex-Mexican “It was a priority for our family to donate to the Tuesdays for Teachers effort because even after all these years, Kristi and I are extremely appreciative of the outstanding education we received at O’Gorman. We know this strong foundation from early in life helped us succeed in college, medical school, residency, and beyond. To us, the donation signifies not only a way of saying thank you to the institution and teachers but also helps ensure future generations will benefit from the same great education we know we were fortunate to experience.” -Evan Hermanson ‘93 “Thank you to everyone who donated to our Tuesday for Teachers effort and supported our partner restaurants! These gifts will help us continue to grow key endowments that sustain our teacher and staff salaries, so we can recruit and retain the best and brightest teachers to Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools.
