From the Head of School, Dr. Mike Walker
What I enjoy most about being Head of School is the range of experiences and interactions I have on any given day: conversations with five to fourteen-year-olds, planning with faculty, sharing moments and meetings with parents, representing the school in admissions tours, and working with the board in setting the strategic agenda of San Francisco Day School. I frequently share these reflections through my blog, as I did with the posting below about our ongoing identity and branding work. I usually receive feedback about the blog postings, and I certainly did in this case, which is why we wanted to share this window into a day in the life of SF Day. One day in September, I was standing in the doorway of my office as students flooded upstairs at the start of another busy day. It gave me great delight to watch a cluster of children slow down to examine the curricular murals displayed along the hallway. I loved the way that our students playfully interacted with the boards, spinning a colorful wheel on one of the murals and moving a game piece on another. I watched them talk, inquire, point, and speculate about what they were seeing, reading, and questioning. Their engagement was exactly what we had hoped for when we decided to take the rather novel approach of articulating San Francisco Day School’s K-8 curriculum as a visual display for our community. The idea to do so was an outgrowth of the messaging work we began last year with Mission Minded. As some of you will recall, we engaged the entire community in a reflective exercise to help us better understand and articulate who we are as a school. Under the guidance of Mission Minded, an organization that helps non-profit organizations “communicate the importance of their work,” we enlisted a team of faculty, parents and guardians, board members, and alumni. We surveyed all of our current families and faculty and conducted a series of in-depth interviews with individuals with both internal and external associations with the school. The synthesis of these perspectives helped us distill the essence of SF Day, which is what I saw on display that morning in the hallway. Our students were exploring and anticipating the learning that awaits them not only this year but throughout their entire learning experience at SF Day. Their sharp intellects and limitless imaginations were fully engaged. Just as they were connected by their collective curiosity while exploring the murals, they also saw the connection in everything they will learn and experience at our school.

As we continue thinking more deeply and planning intentionally about how we communicate the philosophical and pedagogical approach of SF Day, the notion of “intellect and imagination intertwined” is the lens through which I am seeing how our students learn and our teachers teach. This year’s annual Fall Festival presented several such examples. Right before the Festival began, one of our kindergarteners burst through the front door, tucked a big book under his small arm, and repeatedly asked if he could start reading it right then. Later that day, I watched a second-grade student standing still in the midst of all of the movement in the lobby, slowly and gracefully flip the pages of a book and quietly mouth the words she was reading. I spoke with a mom, who was clearly satisfied sitting on a couch designed for three but occupied by four, and all were fully engrossed in the books spread across their laps. I asked a grandmother on the other couch if she had read the book to the child cuddled next to her, and she replied with animated pleasure, “No, I sang it to her.” These are all instances of intellects and imaginations ignited, something I see every day, all day long. It is our students holding papers up to the light of a window so they can trace the repetitive pattern of a fractal unfolded before them. It is our students manipulating planks of wood precariously propped on tables at various angles so they can predict and calculate velocity. It is on display as our students wrestle their written ideas onto a blank page. It is the brilliance of a soiree that expresses the intricacies of the solar system through song and dance. It is the creativity of a P.E. teacher who entices students to exercise every muscle by calling out different animals for the students to mimic. And, it is in the way our teachers use their intellects to intricately design a learning unit, then unleash their imaginations to determine how to best engage every student in the class. I am thoroughly inspired and moved by the act of a child captivated by learning. Our teachers continue to design learning experiences that bridge intellect and imagination, and in doing so, capture the hearts and minds of every student at SF Day. As I witness these instances and connections every day, I know we are fulfilling our purpose as educators, parents, and as a school. Thank you for your support in this endeavor.

The SF Day Alumni Council is made up of alumni spanning 20 graduation years. We are incredibly grateful for their thoughtful leadership and ongoing partnership with our school.
This past year has been a huge success for San Francisco Day School and especially for our alumni program. From a huge turnout at reunion to alumni dropping by campus to reminisce with old teachers and to learn more about SF Day today, our alumni association continues to grow in numbers, events, and participation from our alumni in our philanthropic endeavors.

Alumni Spotlight Abigail Munn ’93 Step Right Up with Abigail Munn ’93 You may have seen Abigail Munn juggling, dancing, and literally flying through hoops across San Francisco parks with her company, Circus Bella. Now in its 10th year, Circus Bella has given over 80 free performances in 16 locations, reaching an audience of over 35,000. A local celebrity among families with young children, Abigail got her first taste for the circus arts when she was just a third grader at San Francisco Day School. “Is Mr. Young still there?” asked Abigail. As a member of the class of 1993, Abigail is part of one of the first classes to attend San Francisco Day School from kindergarten to eighth grade. Abigail smiled when she found out that yes, in fact, Mr. Young is teaching his now 30th year at SF Day. At the age of 10, Abigail practiced after school with the San Francisco-based Pickle Family Circus. Tumbling, juggling, balancing, and aerial acrobatics were all in a typical day’s practice. But it didn’t come without its risks– “I remember I broke both of my wrists in seventh grade and I had to do all of my homework orally with a tape recorder. Mr. Trapasso would help write my answers for me during tests.” Abigail continued her love for performing arts at UC Santa Barbara, where she earned her BFA in dance and eventually co-founded Circus Bella, and continued on her path to reignite the traditional American Circus across the city. Most recently, Circus Bella was invited to represent the Bay Area at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington, D.C. With such a busy schedule, Abigail still sees several of her SF Day schoolmates, including Tanya Zimbardo ’93, Sarah and Christine Kotcher ’93, Gabby and Mimi Lang ’93 and her sister Elizabeth ’95, on a regular basis.

Danielle Dudum Baxter ’00 Strings Theory with Danielle Dudum Baxter ’00 New Alumni Council member Danielle Dudum Baxter ‘00 found time to visit campus in between working as a Global Operations and Strategy Manager at Google and wrapping up an M.B.A. from Haas Business School. Danielle dropped by to see what San Francisco Day School has been up to since the “last Dudum” graduated in 2014. “Walking through the Masonic courtyard and being greeted with a hug from Ms. Thomas in the lobby felt like coming home. It was such a cozy and familiar feeling seeing the kids sitting and giggling in front of the fireplace before class as I used to. Along my tour, I bumped into Ms. Collentine, who is now the Lower School Head. As we chatted, I could hear the cheers from an enthusiastic game of knockout in the gym. I continued through an enchanting art show installation and into my old second grade classroom, where I was warmly welcomed by Ms. Sturm, who invited one of the students to teach me about constants and variables. Toward the end of my tour, I found myself in the upper school music room, a place where I spent a large portion of my adolescence during and after school. Music has always been an integral part of my life: I started on the piano very young, training in the Suzuki method when I was three years old. While I loved the piano, I found practicing and performing lonely. That’s why I was grateful to join the Golden Gate Philharmonic Orchestra in sixth grade, where I learned to play the viola with kids from all around the city. We just so happened to practice in the SF Day music room. Practicing and performing in an orchestra was a collaborative experience. Kids would sit side by side and coach each other through challenging measures, and celebrate each other’s eventual mastery of the music. Playing in an orchestra also taught me accountability - it was a team sport. When I came to rehearsal prepared, the entire orchestra would make greater progress and ultimately, more beautiful music. This is why I was so touched to see the evolution of the upper school music room. On my tour, I noticed the music room full of string and wind instruments, each neatly labeled with the name of a student. From violins to violas, saxophones to large drums, each student has the opportunity to take home and learn an instrument of their choice now. This initiative was funded by ‘Raise Your Paddle’ at CultureFest 2015. Community-driven support and commitment to teaching the whole student are what sets SF Day apart. To this day, I am so grateful for the social and academic foundation that SF Day provided me. The school continues to nurture compassionate, well-rounded, and now, even more creative young adults. Adam Rosenblatt recently founded the Citizens of the World Charter School in Silver Lake, Los Angeles (‘CWCS’). Though he lives with his family in Southern California, he remains close to several SF Day classmates and uses the school’s pillars of inclusivity and diversity to help drive CWCS.

Che Hashim, Esq. has run his own legal practice since 2005, after graduating from the University of San Francisco, School of Law, and working for a time in the office of renowned criminal defense attorney Tony Serra. Having pared down his criminal practice, Che now represents injured persons and those suffering discrimination, harassment and/or retaliation at work, all over Northern California. He has an office in San Francisco and lives with his wife in the Inner Richmond District.

Johnny Irwin is the Executive Director of City Surf Project, whose mission is to teach underserved youth valuable life skills through the sport of surfing. City Surf Project partners with several San Francisco Public and Charter high schools, where students complete a physically rigorous training program while developing an ethic of hard work and perseverance. Students can bring the skills they learn riding waves back to their everyday life in order to relieve stress, deal with trauma, and maintain a positive mental state.

Kristania DeLeon is the lead policy and staff organizer for CA4Health in Southern California. CA4Health is an extension of the Public Health Institute that works to advance chronic disease prevention and health equity in California.
Lena Yesowitch is happy to be back in San Francisco and works as a substitute teacher at SF Day during the 2017-18 school year, in addition to serving on the SF Day Alumni Council.
Long-time former SF Day counselor, Leah Rosenkrantz, celebrated a holiday get-together at her home with alumni from the class of 2007: Sam Traub, Granger Tripp, Karim Dudum, Sean Judkins-Boeri, James Brandon, and Eli Leavitt.

Caroline Getz is a vocalist, composer, and educator living in New York City. Her band, Hexual Ceiling, can be found performing dance jams at downtown venues such as Pianos, Rockwood Music Hall, and Zinc Bar, but Caroline’s fresh compositional choices and light touch keep the jazz sensibility alive and well in her music.
Eric Gorlan graduated from Caltech with a major in computer science and a minor in philosophy, and just finished his first year as a software engineer at Microsoft.

Mike Dwyer has worked for film production companies in Hollywood as a development executive. He also helps run the independent film company, Cinelou Films, which has released films like Cake with Jennifer Aniston and The Comedian with Robert De Niro.

Algernon Allen is the Outreach Lead at the Saje location on Fillmore and pursuing a degree in psychology.

Olivia Pollak recently graduated from Yale University and is now working in federal consulting, supporting projects for government clients — various federal agencies, organizations, and departments in Washington, D.C.

Kate Halper graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in May with majors in biology and English. Kate is currently a medical assistant at the San Francisco Free Clinic and a member of the SF Day Alumni Council.

Aidan Elsesser recently finished a contract as the swing/dance captain of Oklahoma! at the Glimmerglass Opera Festival. “It was an incredibly fulfilling opportunity not only creatively, but also in community building. It’s great to help unite a group of artists and motivate them to do the best they can!”
Ellis Moyé is playing football at Baldwin Wallace University in Northeast Ohio and studying Exercise Science. Ellis looks forward to competing for a national championship on the field and learning more about his passion for fitness in the classroom.

Justin Yamamura is a senior at St. Ignatius College Preparatory and is the founder and president of Youth Policy Initiative (YPI). YPI is committed to providing civic education and leadership training to middle and high school students. YPI has hosted a free, week-long summer camp for rising 7th and 8th grade students from underrepresented backgrounds to learn about public speaking, leadership, and the issues facing San Francisco.

Letter from the Board Chair 2016-17
Dear San Francisco Day School Community, One day last year while at school, I heard a younger student say to a fellow classmate, “This school makes my heart AND my head explode! In a good way!” As a board chair, it is always good to hear that the education that children are receiving is making an impact, and I appreciated the verve with which this child made her point: Namely that San Francisco Day School had touched her heart and her mind. Every day at SF Day is a day filled with wonder, and the 2016-17 school year had many highlights. It was Mike Walker’s second year as Head of School, and we saw how even in the short time he has been here, his thoughtful leadership has made an impact. Mike’s leadership was instrumental in building out the school’s innovation lab, from raising the funds to conceiving of its look and feel. While the idea of innovation is not new for SF Day because it has been happening in our classrooms, hallways, and courtyards since the school’s inception, the innovation lab has helped harness the students’ creativity, and has become a metaphor for what the school does well: knit intellect and imagination together. Financially, the school remains on solid footing thanks to sound management and the philanthropy of this community. We ended the 2016-17 school year with a balanced budget and were able to target funds for strategic reserves. Our endowment, which is the largest among our peer schools, added 9% to our operating budget. Finally, the Annual Fund raised a record-breaking $1.391 million, and CultureFest, our annual fundraiser, raised over $350,000 which will go to our $1.8 million discounted tuition budget. In 2016-17, the board engaged an architect, Studio Bondy, to help envision how the spaces the school owns along Golden Gate Avenue can be incorporated into the campus in a way that strengthens, enhances, and elevates the school’s program. Studio Bondy is, in fact, the firm that designed the original SF Day campus, and we are delighted to be working with them on this next stage in the school’s future. Last year, the board also authorized the school to conduct a timely and necessary review of its communications and branding materials so that it can be prepared for a campaign related to the updated campus, which would include both new and repurposed spaces in the current building.

Amidst this work, the board was focused on strategic initiatives that will allow the school to remain excellent. We worked to ensure that our teachers and staff were given a salary increase and also devoted $225,000 to professional development for the staff and faculty. At the same time, we balanced a strong desire to ensure that this education can remain affordable to families, and earmarked an increase in discounted tuition funds for the following school year. Finally, last year, as a board we examined how we can better lead on issues of diversity and inclusion such that these are not just catch phrases but real commitments. The work of the board can only happen because of the people around the table. In the 2016-17 school year, we welcomed Craig Brumfield, Vanessa Cho, Ali Diab, Wendy Holcombe, and Olivia Morgan to the Board of Trustees. You can read more about them in this report. Last year, we also said goodbye to Molly Wood, who during her six years on the board served in a variety of capacities including on the head of school search committee, diversity, education, and trustee committees, among others. Finally, I am delighted to note that Reed Colley agreed to serve as vice chair for the 2017-18 school year, and will eventually serve as board chair. Reed and his wife Katie have four children at SF Day, and Reed has served as board Treasurer as well as a member of the head of school search committee, diversity, finance and trustee committees. The board will be well served by his leadership. Every day at SF Day, our students are getting an education that expands their minds and touches their heart. In a good way. New Trustees 2017-18 Craig Brumfeld
Craig is the Managing Partner of Sennosen LLC, an intellectual property holding company. Prior to Sennosen, Craig oversaw the global equity long/ short team for AXA’s Rosenberg Equities unit. His background also includes venture investing in enterprise software companies as well as research in high-performance computing. Craig is actively involved with and supports the Visiting Committee of The University of Chicago, the MIT Office of Engineering Outreach Programs, and St. Augustine’s School, a Youth Progress Program in New Orleans. He and his wife, Erin Mullen, have a son at San Francisco Day School in 3rd grade.
Vanessa Cho
Vanessa is currently a UX Director at Google. Prior to that, she was head of user experience and design for software and services at GoPro, responsible for product design and research for web, mobile, desktop, and TV. In just 18 months under her leadership, the GoPro Software UX team grew from 1 to 18 remarkable designers focused on strategy, interaction, content, visual, prototyping, and research. Prior to GoPro, Vanessa was senior director of user experience at Walmart Labs, where she led a 50+ person user experience team for Walmart Global eCommerce, with responsibility for the US market. Since she began her career after graduating from Brown University and Rhode Island School of Design, Vanessa has gained over 17 years of experience working on consumerfacing products. She and her husband, Matt Simmons, have two children at San Francisco Day School in grades 5 and 3.

Reed Colley
Reed Colley was the founder and CEO of Black Diamond, which was acquired by Advent Software, and he served as Senior Vice President at Advent before leaving to start another series of ventures. Reed and his wife, Katie Colley, are founders and trustees of Do Something Great Today Foundation, which focuses on creating technology to enable donors to give their time and resources more effectively to the charities of their choice. Reed joined the SF Day Board of Trustees in 2014-15 and has served as Board Treasurer as well as a member of the Executive, Finance, Diversity & Inclusion, Trustee & Governance, and Head of School Search committees. During the 2017-18 school year, Reed will serve as Vice-Chair of the Board, and in 2018-19, he will become Board Chair. Reed graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1998 with degrees in Economics and Engineering Science. Reed and Katie have four children at San Francisco Day School in grades 7, 5, and 2.
Ali Diab
As Collective Health’s CEO, Ali brings more than 15 years of technology startup and executive management experience to the company. Ali also brings a strong personal motivation to improve the quality and cost of company-sponsored health care after experiencing a major health problem while employed at a growing technology company. Prior to cofounding Collective Health, Ali was VP of Product Management and Business Operations at AdMob, a leading mobile advertising company, acquired by Google in 2010. Previously, Ali held executive and management positions at Goldman Sachs, Microsoft, and Yahoo!. Ali is a graduate of Stanford and Oxford universities. He and his wife Nora have two children at San Francisco Day School in grades 5 and 1.
Wendy Holcombe
Wendy is a graduate of Colby College and has held positions in the Editorial Department at Vanity Fair Magazine and the Network Programming department at Excite@Home. For the past five years, she has worked at Bay Area NPR-affiliate 91.7 KALW, where she produces City Visions, a one-hour show that focuses on local public affairs. Since August of 2016, she has been acting Senior Producer for City Visions and as such manages a team of four producers and two hosts and regularly interfaces with the station head. She has been a volunteer at San Francisco Day School in many capacities, from running the Live Auction to being an art volunteer. Wendy and her husband, Carl Kawaja, have a daughter in grade 6 at San Francisco Day School and two alumni children (Catherine ’16 and Marcus ’17).
Olivia Morgan
Olivia has been at the creative edge of government, public policy, and political communications throughout her career. She was formerly a Senior Advisor to A Woman’s Nation, a project led by Maria Shriver, dedicated to fostering a national conversation on how best to realign American institutions with current needs of American workers and families. She was also Managing Editor of The Shriver Report, a series of book-length examinations bringing academic and on-the-ground expertise to exploring cultural transformation across multiple platforms and partnerships. She is president of her own politicultural consulting firm, OM Strategies, a contributing essayist at mariashriver. com and an adjunct professor at George Washington University. After graduating from Wesleyan University, Olivia worked in campaign communications at the state and federal levels, and as national spokesperson for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in 1998 cycle. Olivia and her husband, David Plouffe, have two children at San Francisco Day School in grades 7 and 3.

CultureFest 1981
In 1981, the dream of an independent, co-education school where students were encouraged to inquire and innovate became a reality. In April of 2017, our community came together for the “raddest” CultureFest to date, “CultureFest:1981”, continuing to deliver on the same commitment to affordability and accessibility that SF Day made when it was founded 36 years ago. We thank all of our volunteers, underwriters, and donors who contributed their invaluable resources to CultureFest 2017 and came out to rock their gnarliest ‘80’s fashion! The event raised over $350,000 for discounted tuition and collaborative learning spaces. That’s, like, totally awesome.
Raise your Paddle 2017 Collaborate. Co-Create. Cooperate. At CultureFest 2017, our community came together in the spirit of creativity, imagination, and intellectual engagement by raising their paddles to support collaborative learning spaces. We were able to raise over $220,000 to improve learning spaces in the fourth grade classrooms and upper school math rooms by introducing a variety of learning stations and incorporating Universal Design for Learning practices. Thank you to all who contributed and gave our students bright, inviting, and clean classrooms that encourage connection, curiosity, and imagination.

Endowing Excellence for SF Day Established in 2011 with gifts from families and friends of the school, following the adoption of the 2011-12 strategic plan, The Power of Potential. This campaign specifically focused on endowment growth to increase the long-term financial sustainability of SF Day. Portions are allocated for Discounted Tuition, Institute for Teaching and Learning, and differentiated instruction programs. Breakthrough SF Dear Friends of Breakthrough, In the early ‘90s, a group of San Francisco Day School parents and staff formed a steering committee to explore how the school could positively impact the city at large. As we approach the 25th anniversary of Breakthrough San Francisco - the program resulting from those efforts - their vision remains relevant and powerful. This year, Breakthrough is supporting 244 students in grades 5 - 12, including our inaugural class of high school seniors. 89% will be the first in their families to attend a four-year college. All have made an eight-year commitment to attend our summer, after-school, and Saturday programming, and have demonstrated exceptional perseverance. This fall, 87% of our eighth graders began the school year algebra-ready, as compared to 23% of potential first generation college students nationally. 96% of our ninth - twelfth graders are attending a collegepreparatory high school, while 92% earned a GPA of 3.0 or higher last school year. Also this year, 32 top-notch college students took part in our summer teacher residency. Over the course of eight weeks, they received top-notch training and ongoing support, including individualized coaching from an experienced

educator. At the end of the experience, 100% of our fellows reported increased interest in an education career, while 97% said they were better prepared to enter the teaching profession. 63% of fellows who graduated from college since 2011 are currently working in the education field. At Breakthrough, aspiring college students and aspiring educators find a place to grow together. This is possible because of tremendous effort by so many. Thanks to our staff, who invest long hours each day in the work of this program. Thanks to the volunteers - over 100 annually - who tutor in our after-school program and take part in our Volunteer Leadership Program each summer. Breakthrough SF
Joseph started at Breakthrough the summer after fourth grade, excited to get additional academic support. “In the beginning I was really stressed out,” he remembers. “I was working hard while my peers from school were hanging out and going on vacation. I had to reflect and realize that I was here for a reason, because I want to learn and get an education. Having other students around me who had the same drive to learn was really awesome.”

Joseph also appreciated his teachers. “Every morning, they would be cheering on the curb, they were so happy to see us,” he recalls. “They took my writing, math, and literature skills to a whole new level. All those annotations in our reading books, all those math equations I solved, and all the talks I had with my advisor really set me up for the future.” Career Day was a memorable experience. Over the course of four summers, he visited Goldman Sachs, Facebook, Kaiser Permanente, and UCSF Medical Center. The hospital visits were especially impactful. “To walk into UCSF and get a tour, and get to know the people who worked there, to have that first-hand account from these people who are working to make the community better, it was so fascinating and it just sparked my love for medicine,” he says.

Joseph also benefited from Breakthrough’s after-school program. Katherine, a University of San Francisco senior, was one of his tutors. “I had trouble doing quadratic equations in math,” he says. “Her in-depth explanations helped me understand the concept much better. I learned a lot of other things from her too, such as using my time wisely and learning to do the more complicated homework first.” The fall of eighth grade meant high school admissions. Joseph received guidance through that daunting process
from Jenee Palmer, Breakthrough’s Senior Program Director. “Jenee provided us with examples of the essay format, had one-on-one meetings, prepared us for the SSAT, and answered questions around the clock. Without her, I don’t know what high school I would have got into.” As it turned out, Joseph was accepted to Lick-Wilmerding. “Freshman year was kind of bumpy with the increase in homework,” Joseph recalls. “There were still some things I needed to work on, like procrastination and such.” Being a student of color at an independent school was also a real challenge to navigate. But Joseph built relationships with his teachers, worked on his time management skills, and got involved on campus - with basketball, journalism, and the Black Student Union. He recently began his junior year at Lick and increasingly grows as a leader. And for the past two summers, Joseph returned to Breakthrough as a participant in our Volunteer Leadership Program. “I wanted to volunteer because I felt compelled to, because Breakthrough has helped me so graciously with everything, and I really wanted to give back to the next generation,” he says. He decorated the school, tutored younger students, served lunch, and assisted teachers. By his second summer, he found himself leading cheers in front of two hundred people and awarding the Spirit Stick to a deserving group of Breakthrough students on Friday afternoons. More than ever, he was working hard for his own future as well as the futures of those around him. “Breakthrough strives to bridge the gap of educational inequality,” Joseph says, “and I feel honored to be part of that effort. Breakthrough has been that launching pad to help me not only succeed but thrive in high school and beyond.”
When Mele was a fourth grader, her mom became an elementary school teacher. Mele remembers getting to school early, when the halls were still empty, to lend a hand. But her own career path became clear only later, as a high school senior, when President Obama put out a call in his State of the Union address for young people to enter the education field. Mele remembers excitedly discussing the speech with her mom.

That fall, Mele enrolled at the University of San Francisco, and subsequently earned a spot in USF’s Dual Degree in Teacher Preparation Program - a rigorous five-year program leading to a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, and teaching credential. She did field work at a number of schools across the city and interned at non-profits, but wanted the experience of leading her own classroom. As a senior, she applied to Breakthrough’s summer teacher residency. “Breakthrough seems like the perfect opportunity to hone the skills I’ve acquired over the past four years,” Mele wrote in her application. “It’s an opportunity to gain more experience with children and work with likeminded people. I think it’s wonderful that both teachers and students benefit, learn, and grow at Breakthrough, and I would love to be a part of that.” Mele spent the summer of 2015 immersed in the experience. Two years later, she can’t forget the intensity of the work during that eight-week period -- learning to craft lesson plans, manage a classroom, build relationships with students and family members, and so much more. She remembers the conversations about social justice with her colleagues and the ongoing feedback from her Instructional Coach. She remembers
discovering how positively her students responded when she got to know them as individuals. And she remembers how much fun she had - greeting students with cheers first thing in the morning and dressing up in costumes at STEM Olympics - and the unique, supportive community that she is still connected to. Mele subsequently spent two years as a Teacher Apprentice at Presidio Hill School, working with first and fourth graders. And this year, she has her own class of first graders at Tom Matsumoto Elementary School in San Jose - the same school where her mom used to teach. While it’s challenging work, Mele feels ready. “I feel so prepared, and it’s because of that summer. I have a strong foundation and I don’t feel overwhelmed. I’m still trying to get to know my students as human beings, teaching the whole child - even now I eat lunch with my kids and I try to talk with them about their personal interests and experiences. And I’m trying to teach with the same sense of accountability, holding myself to a high standard, just like at Breakthrough.” “I still wear my Breakthrough T-shirt because I’m very proud of it,” she adds. “When I look back in ten years, I know Breakthrough will have added so much to my journey as an educator.”
