WELCOME TO SF GLASGOW

elcome to the fi rst issue of SF Glasgow, the little brother of Scotland’s best lifestyle magazine, Scottish Field. We hope that SF Glasgow encapsulates the best of Scottish Field but that it also showcases all that is good about Scotland’s biggest city. SF Glasgow is put together by people who love to celebrate the best of the west, and is designed to help our readers enjoy all that the city has to offer. In particular, we have worked hard to put together a ‘What’s On’ diary that will give an easy, at-a-glance rundown of the major cultural and entertainment events in the city over the next three months, providing a wealth of recommendations that will last until our next issue is delivered in August. We have trawled

SF Glasgow is designed to help our readers enjoy all the city has to offer through the programmes of every gallery, museum, auctioneer, venue and sports ground in Glasgow so that you don’t have to. On a personal level, having reviewed a restaurant somewhere in Scotland almost every week since 2002, it’s great to be able to share that accumulated knowledge. Again, we’d love to hear if you have any recommendations of outstanding places to eat. Above all, we hope you enjoy reading SF Glasgow as much as we’ve enjoyed putting it together.

ravelling into Manchester city centre in the run-up to the 2002 Commonwealth Games made for an interesting journey. While state-of-theart facilities popped up, such as the £32m aquatics centre and the City of Manchester Stadium, old buildings were shrouded from view. Some of the city centre’s derelict structures which escaped demolition prior to the Games, were covered in plastic sheeting to hide the less salubrious of Manchester’s offerings from the millions-strong global audience looking on. Twelve years later, with the world’s media set to converge on the city for the 2014 Games, Glasgow took a different approach. While some of the architectural eyesores were earmarked for demolition, other parts of the city arguably lacking in luxury were actually highlighted. Glasgow transformed areas with a few cans of spray paint and a whole lot of talent. From the swimmers emblazoned on a concrete wall at the Kingston Bridge, to Scottish badminton ace Kieran Merrilees along Wilson Street,

marvellous murals started cropping up around the city. And it didn’t end with the Games. When the sports stars and visitors shipped out, the move to brighten up urban areas continued. Created by the street artist known as Smug, the latest addition, on a gable end in the High Street, depicts

We didn’t realise people could do this with spray paint a modern-day St Mungo – the patron saint of Glasgow – and the story of The Bird That Never Flew. The story goes that when he was a child, Mungo witnessed some boys throwing stones at robins. One fell to the ground and the boys ran away. Mungo ran to the fallen bird. Picking it up he prayed over it, and

it revived and flew away. Onlooking villagers thought it was a miracle. Fittingly, Glasgow Cathedral, near to Smug’s painting, is the final resting place of the city’s patron saint. Details of other pieces feature in dedicated Mural Trail literature, which showcases the diverse range of art within walking distance of the city centre. From the flying taxi on Mitchell Street to a giant panda on Gordon Lane, or the Scottish wildlife overlooking the Ingram Street car park, the murals rejuvenate streets and buildings. By creating splashes of colour, which brightens up lanes and streets, the murals have a positive impact, helping make these areas more inviting to both locals and visitors. Bobby McNamara – aka street artist Rogue-One – is behind a number of artworks in the city, including the shadow puppets at Cowcaddens underpass and, in collaboration with Art Pistol, Howard Street’s giant escaped birds. He believes the work is also prompting people to challenge their own preconceptions, with sections of the public who dismissed all graffiti as vandalism, beginning to hear the word afresh. ‘They’re looking at these murals and thinking, “Wow, is this graffiti too?”,’ McNamara says. ‘On my Facebook page, I have older ladies message me and say, “We didn’t realise people could do this kind of artwork with spray paint, it’s amazing”.’ Artists can get involved by applying to the city centre Mural Fund, details of which can be found at www.glasgow.gov. uk/citycentremuralfund.

Charles Rennie Mackintosh Born in 1868, Glasgow artist, architect and designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh became one of the driving forces behind a new approach to modern architecture. In 1896, he was commissioned by the Glasgow School of Art to design a new building. The project was to be his masterwork, with nods both to Scotland’s earlier baronial tradition, and the 20th century through its use of materials and technology. From 1906 to 1914, Mackintosh and his wife Margaret lived at the now demolished 78 Southpark Avenue, a Victorian end-terrace in the West End, the interior of which can be seen at The Hunterian Art Gallery. Following a period in London, a move to the South of France in 1923 signalled the end of Mackintosh’s architectural career and the last years of his life were spent painting. He died in London in December 1928, but is to this day remembered as the father of ‘Glasgow style’.

industry, metal work, ship building and marine engineering all booming. Between 1800-1900, Glasgow’s population grew from just 77,000 to over three quarters of a million. Throughout the Georgian era, most city dwellers lived close to the medieval High Street, while land to the west of the River Kelvin was largely unoccupied; only isolated farms and the country mansions of the wealthy elite dotted the landscape there. But as Glasgow prospered – thanks largely to the completion of the Forth and Clyde Canal in 1790, the deepening of the Clyde in 1812 allowing oceangoing vessels to reach the Broomielaw, and the opening of the Garnkirk and Glasgow Railway in 1831 – the city

expanded westward. With the influx of bigwigs and company owners enjoying unprecedented success in their chosen industrial fields, there was new demand

The laying of the Great Western Road injected yet more life into the city for spacious housing close to the centre which encompassed servants’ accommodation, so streets of large, Georgian terraces soon sprang up. By 1820 these large new rows had reached

Aiming to attract the burgeoning mercantile classes to the new developments of superlative buildings at Hillhead, Kelvinside and Dowanhill, entrepreneurial developers waxed lyrical to potential buyers about the fresh air and hilltop views, as well as pointing out the distance from the city’s lesser streets and riff-raff. Fun facts West End millionaire A.E. Pickard, who lived in the city from the turn of the 20th century until his death in 1964, was the first man in Glasgow to be booked for a parking offence. Running late for a cinema trade outing to Rothesay, he caught his train only by parking his car in the middle of Platform 8 in Central Station. He was later fined £1, which he paid for with a £100 note. The spectacular domed glasshouse in the Botanic Gardens was originally the conservatory of Victorian eccentric John Kibble, who agreed to have it transferred to the Gardens in 1873, providing he could still use it for concerts and entertainments.

GEORGE PARSONAGE

A day in the life of... Glasgow Humane Society officer George Parsonage’s rowing boat is a familiar sight on the Clyde – a welcome one for anyone in difficulty on the water WORDS BY GEO RG E PARS O N AG E

M

y father was the officer for the Glasgow Humane Society and I was born in the lifeboat station. They joked we could row before we could walk. I started helping my father when I was 14, I’m 72 now. It felt like second nature. We’re not on emergency call now, but still do about 20 rescues a year, just by virtue of being on the water as you are there when things happen. There’s no such thing as a typical rescue, not in a million years – I hope I never see another one. Mostly we concentrate on prevention work such as putting up lifebelts and inspecting the river. The university clubs and the boat clubs are all here. Our day starts early, but rowers are not allowed out on the river before dawn or after dusk.

I have no idea how many lives I’ve saved. Prevention is best. It’s easy hauling someone into the boat. The boats are built specially for that. There’s no trick to it, you just lift them in. You know that the boat’s not going to capsize. If you go to the transport museum, they’ve got a film of it because the old boat is there. It’s the only time I’ve ever allowed filming of me lifting someone out of the water. If people end up in the water, it can be very sad for them, and even the ones it’s not sad for, they’ve made a mistake, so 99% of them want to forget about it. I have no idea how many lives I’ve saved. The Royal Lifesaving Society gave me an award for saving 1,500 people, but I’ve no idea. Prevention is best. www.glasgowhumanesociety.com

RESTAURANT REVIEWS

New boys on the block We review a selection of Glasgow’s newest restaurants

Reviews by Richard Bath. Additional reporting by Madeleine Smith and Mark Duncan.

CAU (Carne Argentina Unica) 222-224 Ingram St, City Centre

This vibrant Argentine restaurant off George Square is part of a chain but somehow doesn’t feel like it. Trendy and noisy, it is dominated by a big chrome bar and booths, while the menu is spearheaded by steak and classic Argentine street food like empanadas. It says it has an Italian and Spanish accent, but also incorporates dishes from further afield, such as pork belly tempura. Portions are huge, but also come tapas-sized. NEW RESTAURANTS

Annabel’s at Boclair House Hotel 100 Milngavie Road, Bearsden

Built in 1890, the impressive Tudor Gothic-style mansion that is Boclair House Hotel recently underwent a £3m revamp by independent Scottish hotel group Manorview Hotels that has transformed it into a prestigious wedding venue. A former municipal building, which was originally built as a retreat for members of the Buchanan Clan in need of refuge, it is now the perfect setting for this Art Nouveau-inspired hotel. Standalone restaurant Annabel’s is equally fitting, from the Moulin Rougestyle light fittings to the Mucha prints adorning the walls, this is truly a decadent environment in which to savour a meal. With the emphasis on fresh Scottish produce, the amusebouche of carpaccio of Scottish vension is a delight. A starter of seared Isle of Mull scallops with a west coast lobster and lemon ravioli is in keeping with the focus on locally sourced products, with the scallops cooked to perfection and complemented by the rich citrus tang of the ravioli. After a strong start, expectations are running high, and the main course arrives promptly and does not disappoint. A beautiful fillet of herb-crusted Scottish salmon with pomme Anna potato, braised baby onions and truffle sauce was consumed with immense pleasure – I couldn’t get enough of the truffle sauce – all washed down with a very decent glass of chardonnay. Although there are options for side dishes, the portions are generous enough to satisfy even those of us with larger appetites (read 6ft 6in males). Dessert is a glazed lemon tart with honeycomb and raspberry sorbet – the sweet sorbet the ideal partner to the sharper tart; a perfect ending. The menu from head chef Ian MacAdams (pictured left) is the perfect partner to this elegant salon. MD 0141 942 4278 | www.boclairhousehotel.co.uk

Black Dove 67 Kilmarnock Road, Shawlands

This is a gem of a restaurant. In a shopping centre, it is visually underwhelming and has a menu including run-of-the-mill staples like omelettes. Yet its wonderful flip side involves top ingredients and some ambitious fine dining cuisine. Dishes such as beef tenderloin with crispy onions and teriyaki sauce, or salt-baked celeriac with sautéed kale and smoked shallot purée hint at the Ferrari engine under the Fiat Uno exterior. NEW RESTAURANTS

Spiritualist 62 Miller Street, Merchant City

Situated in one of the quieter streets of the Merchant city, The Spiritualist has made itself at home in the former Stirling’s Library. Tastefully decorated and beautifully lit, The Spiritualist has a luxurious and relaxed atmosphere. Our waiter was very attentive and knowledgeable about the food and drink on offer. The menu offered such an impressive variety of dishes, we took a while to order. The starters were especially difficult to choose, each sounded more

tempting than the last. We opted for the mini beef wellington and the scallops with pig cheeks and quickly cleaned our plates. Our main courses were just as impressive; the lobster burger was as tasty as expected, served with a fresh mango chutney and a generous portion of hand cut chips. The venison was incredibly tender and complemented by a tasty port and truffle jus. We both chose a dessert of rhubarb, one with mascarpone in a variation of Eton Mess and the other a rhubarb charlotte with warm custard. The Spiritualist is well worth a visit for great food in elegant and stylish surroundings. MS 0141 248 4165 | www.thespiritualistglasgow.com

Atlantic Bar & Brasserie 12-16 St Vincent Place, City Centre

If you like your Gallic influences shovelled on, then this atmospheric cellar brasserie, which tries to recreate the atmosphere of a grand Parisian salon, is the place for you. The menu is so French it almost strays into cliché: from steak tartare and snails, through tartiflette and boeuf bourguignon, and ending with tarte tatin and clafoutis – all the usual suspects are on parade. Hugely popular since opening, and rightly so. RB 0141 221 0220 | www.atlanticbrasserie.co.uk

SIX OF THE BEST

Fish of the Day Looking for somewhere to sate your sordid pescatorial appetites – then look no further...

Crabshakk When Crabshakk launched in 2009 it was seen as hugely innovative and nothing has changed there. Always rammed full, the restaurant is light and noisy, and hums to the chat of happy diners. Sourcing is all, so the menu changes depending on which seafood is available, but the chowder is always outstanding. The food is simply served, although the portions can be a bit small. Roy Brett of Ondine loves this place, and that should be enough endorsement for any serious foodie.

1114 Argyle Street, West End | 0141 334 6127 | www.crabshakk.com

The Finnieston Were The Finnieston just a magnificent seafood restaurant it would be seriously impressive, but throw in its peerless gin bar and you have a stellar mix. The fantastic staple dishes – try the red gurnard and braised Iberico pork cheek paella – are wonderful, but the real joy is an ever-changing menu which depends upon which ingredients can be sourced most freshly. The emphasis at this nauticallythemed house in the Bohemian enclave of Finnieston is on letting quality shine. Highly recommended.

Old Salty’s While Old Salty’s is ostensibly a pair of traditional fish n’ chip shops in the West End, in reality this is a hipster hijack of a timeless classic. Both venues are bright, fresh, achingly trendy and stowed out with twentysomething dudes with beards, and both serve a limited takeaway and sit-in menu where almost everything comes with chips. Luxuriate in old-school grub like fish butties, mushy peas, macaroni pie, chips n’ gravy and strawberry jelly – and Glasgow’s most stylish fish and chips. 337 Byres Road, West End | 0141 334 3334 | www.oldsaltys.co.uk 1126 Argyle St, West End | 0141 357 5677

SEAFOOD RESTAURANTS

Gandolfi Fish That this restaurant lives up to the huge reputation of its much-loved mothership, Cafe Gandolfi, tells you all you need to know about its quality. Gandolfi Fish is a bustling mecca to Scottish seafood, but also displays the simplicity and culinary honesty that underpins the Gandolfi brand. There’s also style and comfort in the metropolitan decor, with big windows onto the Merchant City allowing you to watch the world go by. For top value try the pre-theatre menu (12-6 every day) and for those on the move, the neighbouring Fish to Go (also a part of the Gandolfi group) is well worth a visit.

225a West George St, City Centre | 0141 572 0899 | www.gamba.co.uk

Gamba If you’re after posh fish, the opulently-appointed Gamba in the city centre is your obvious choice. Okay, it’s not Rogano – so no need to remortgage – and you won’t need a jacket and tie at this deceptively relaxed two AA rosettes establishment, but this is seriously grown-up seafood. With a nice mix of classics and world fusion dishes, Gamba has something for all fish and shellfish lovers. It’s not cheap (all mains are well over £20) but then head chef Derek Marshall’s attention to detail means that you are assured of a meal to remember – and the place also has a top rating from the Sustainable Restaurant Association, so you get to feel all warm inside too.

84 Albion St, Merchant City | 0141 552 9475 | www.cafegandolfi.com

The Fish People Cafe Next door to a wholesale fishmonger, virtually on top of the Shields Road metro stop and very easy to reach via the M8, this place has a vast amount going for it even before you get to the food. The decor is certainly tasteful and appealing: they haven’t tried to shoehorn too many tables in, there’s a classic marble bar, and black & white photos from the neighbouring shop. The food is sensibly priced, with all mains under £20, and portions are good. There’s a good range of dishes – we particularly liked the chunky fish stew, crab linguine and Tandoori sea bass – and the puddings are surprisingly decent. 350 Scotland St, Southside | 0141 429 8787 | www.thefishpeoplecafe.co.uk

ICONIC BOOZER

Iconic boozer THE HORSESHOE BAR, 17-21 Drury Street Dating from 1846, the Horseshoe Bar’s fame stems from its grand Victorian bar, which at 104ft 3in is reputed to be the longest in Europe and merits an architectural listing of its own. A stone’s throw from Central station, in 1884 horse-obsessed owner John Scouller refurbished the premises and renamed it The Horseshoe Bar. Equestrian themes have continued to be added over the years, while in 2013 caricatures were commissioned of several Horseshoe regulars, which now hang in the bar.

MY CITY GARDEN

My city garden ‘We had always wanted to do something radical with the front,’ says Martin Stepek of his and wife Christine’s garden in Hamilton. Martin, an author and teacher of mindfulness, and Christine, a recently retired teacher, have lived in their house for 21 years. However, Martin’s interest in Japanese culture recently sparked a rethink of the garden, whereby the grey slabs, conifers and lawn of old were replaced with swaying grasses and stone curves. ‘The idea of making a front garden very Zen was very radical,’ Martin says. ‘We knew we wanted the tranquillity and beauty, but with a bit more colour and flourish than the most minimal, starkly beautiful Zen gardens. The couple brought garden designer Carolyn Grohmann on board, whose work they had seen at the Gardening Scotland Show at Ingliston. ‘We wanted her to ensure we didn’t make a mess of what we knew was a fabulous vision,’ Martin says. ‘I think of it as a work of art, something shared with those who walk or drive by it. I don’t think of it as really ours, but everyone’s.’ www.martinstepek.com; www.secretgardensdesign.co.uk 36 |

he first thing that strikes you about Catherine Burnell and Stuart Lonsdale’s Glasgow flat is the light – the white-painted space is simply flooded with it. ‘I think that’s what sold the flat to us,’ Catherine says. Situated in Glasgow’s leafy West End, close to the Botanic Gardens, the

see the flat’s potential when they bought it two and a half years ago. ‘It was in need of a new kitchen and bathroom, and it had woodchip all over the walls and ceilings, which was an absolute nightmare to get off,’ Catherine says. ‘The flat also had wooden floors, which we stripped back and painted light grey. I think that added to the airiness and brightness of it,’ she adds. When decorating, the couple stuck to a predominantly white palette. ‘I’ve always liked keeping fresh, white walls, because I like to buy lots of different pieces of furniture and change layouts around, and then add accent colours through cushions, throws and artwork,’ Catherine explains. ‘White makes everything stand out.’ In contrast, the revamped bathroom

makes a bold statement in black. ‘We had black tiles and it just seemed to work to continue that colour on to the walls,’ Catherine says. ‘Almost two thirds of the wall behind the sink is mirrored, so that adds a great feeling of space. It’s such a simple trick but it does really work.’ Simple matt white Ikea units in the kitchen are teamed with white subway tiles, maintaining the clean, bright look. ‘I really like to do things on a budget and I quite enjoy the challenge of making something look expensive without having a designer price tag,’ Catherine explains. ‘That’s pretty much what we’re all about, which is why we buy a lot of vintage furniture and upcycle things.’ Furniture has been accumulated from a range of sources, including charity shop and salvage yard finds. ‘We quite like the hunt, whether that be charity shops or salvage yards,’ she says. ‘With main pieces, I’ll have something in mind from looking through homes magazines and seeing something I quite like. We’ll then go on a hunt specifically for that, but a lot of it just kind of happens. It is a gradual accumulation.’ When I ask Catherine what she thinks has worked particularly well in the flat, she points out the floors. ‘I think the flooring really lifted the place, especially in the kitchen and the bathroom, which is flooring from Glasgow Art School we found in a reclamation yard. It’s nice to have a little bit of history in the place.’ The end result is a striking blend of old and new – a stylish, creative home, but without that designer price tag.

hen I speak to jewellery designer Euan McWhirter he has just been to stock up on supplies – I ask if that’s still a fun part of the job. ‘The fun part is walking in to work in the sun today. The minute the weather gets better in Scotland, everyone’s just out, skiving!’ he laughs.

Originally from Troon, the designer – who made his name with his iconic Lucky Bitches rings, colourful cocktail rings worn by the likes of Kylie – has been based in Glasgow for six years. Jewellery has long been an interest. ‘I liked the idea of something three-

dimensional you could wear. I was always interested in how people dressed, not just in the streets but culturally.’ Euan studied jewellery design at the renowned Central Saint Martins in London. ‘I was like a wee boy from Troon thinking I knew it all, and went down to London and it was a real eye opener, but I really enjoyed it.’ Work in the UK and overseas followed, as did a stint at Erickson Beamon, the jewellery house beloved of celebrities.

I was like a wee boy from Troon thinking I knew it all ‘That’s where I really found my niche, seeing the fashion side of it,’ he says. His work features shots of colour and ornate design, alongside simpler pieces with just a hint of colour – beautiful, timeless contrasts with an element of fun. Next up is a ‘wearable’ diamond collection later this year. ‘The idea is that you could wear something with jeans and a t-shirt, like a little diamond bracelet; so affordable, wearable diamond pieces. But I’ll still have a bit of the colour coming into it,’ he says. ‘A little bit of the fun.’ www.euanmcwhirter.com

Model behaviour Founded in 2012, MAKLab is Scotland’s first open access digital fabrication studio, allowing everyone access to some of the latest design techonology. This includes the chance to use a 3D printer, which is currently their most popular service. The printer can produce plastic items, from cups – like the one shown – to jewellery, guitars and even guns. The only limitation is your imagination. The flagship lab in Glasgow was created to support innovation in design across Scotland. The MAKLab team provide teaching workshops, creative collaborations and outreach events to members with the aim of reducing the costs associated with prototyping and manufacturing. As well as low-cost access to an array of state-of-the-art design machinery, such as laser cutters and vacuum formers, the studio provides workshops in resin casting, bloktagon candle making, digital embroidery, coding and more. Individual memberships cost between £35 and £75, which includes complete training on the equipment, access to all facilities and discounted costs on materials, products and workshops across MAKLab’s network of studios. www.maklab.co.uk

THE LAST WORD

My Glasgow A presenter for BBC’s Reporting Scotland and Songs of Praise, Sally Magnusson considers herself a Glaswegian first and foremost WORDS BY SA LLY MAG N US S O N

My greatest memory of Glasgow as a child is the subway. I used to catch it to and from school every day and we called it the Clockwork Orange. I remember the smell and that slightly spooky feeling when you hear the train rumbling towards you and then that whoosh of air. I was a feature writer for the Sunday Standard for many years before I moved to London. In the 1990’s I returned to work for BBC Scotland on Queen Margaret Drive. I found a great little hairdresser called Graeme Reid on Byres Road just across from my office. Now the BBC has moved to the Pacific Quay on the Clyde but I still go there for a trim, he is my root in the West End. I love to just wander along Byres Road. It’s a great mixture of shops and

I can remember the smell and that slightly spooky feeling good coffee places, and a Waterstones full of lovely books. Then I’ll walk through the Botanic Gardens, which I have always loved – especially on a summer’s day when the scents of the garden are completely delicious. The newsroom at BBC Scotland has the most amazing views of the city. You can see right down the river. If I have a guest from England or America I take them to the Ubiquitous Chip on Ashton Lane, fondly known as ‘The Chip’. Before it became fashionable to have authentic Scottish food, The Chip was doing it. You can always get really nice Scottish food there. It is often said that Glasgow is a city you have to walk around looking up. That is absolutely true, the buildings are stunning, particularly in the Merchant City. I have always loved that part of Glasgow’s history – when the tobacco lords walked the streets. They’ve made a wonderful job of restoring that part of the city.
