Gov. DeSantis Excludes LGBT People From Non-Discrimination Order Chris Johnson

Washington Blade

N

ewly sworn-in after his victory over Andrew Gillum in the Florida gubernatorial race, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed on Wednesday an executive order ensuring non-discrimination in state employment and state contracting — but the directive notably excludes LGBT people. The order DeSantis signed, Executive Order No. 19-10, is titled “Reaffirming Commitment to Diversity in Government.” Although the directive prohibits discrimination on the basis of age, sex, race, color, religion, national origin, martial status and disability, it says nothing about sexual orientation or gender identity. Joe Saunders, senior political director for Equality Florida, slammed DeSantis in a statement for the exclusion. “Equality Florida is deeply disappointed to see that LGBTQ employees and contractors have been left out of the governor’s executive order,” Saunders said. The omission recalls the failure of former Florida Gov. Rick Scott to issue an executive order against anti-LGBT discrimination.

After the Pulse nightclub shooting that left 49 dead and 53 wounded, Equality Florida issued the call for Scott to take that action. (Scott is now serving as a U.S. senator representing Florida.) DeSantis’ order stands in contrast to recent actions from other governors. Newly seated Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers, both Democrats, signed LGBT-inclusive non-discrimination orders this week as among their first acts in office. At the end of last year before leaving office, Ohio Gov. John Kasich and Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder, both Republicans, took similar action against anti-LGBT discrimination in state employment. Criticizing the new Florida governor, Saunders drew on the contrast between DeSantis and other governors and compared MEMBER

the LGBT exclusion to Scott’s. “It’s hard to believe that Gov. DeSantis and his staff are not aware of the LGBTQ community’s call for these protections following the Pulse tragedy and therefore it is hard to interpret this as anything less than a purposeful omission,” Saunders said. “As governors across the country establish these critical protections for LGBTQ families, this order draws a stark contrast. We look forward to a dialogue with Gov. DeSantis about why LGBTQ employees have been omitted from this critical policy and how he plans to make sure that all Floridians, regardless of who they are or who they love, can be protected from discrimination.” DeSantis’ office didn’t respond to the Washington Blade’s request for comment on why LGBT people were excluded from the order.

Bisexual veterans and soldiers at higher risk for PTSD

New research indicates bisexual veterans and soldiers may be at a higher risk for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and depression than their peers. University of Southern California doctoral student Katie McNamara conducted the research, saying previous researchers studied lesbian, gay, and bisexual people as one group, according to MedicalXpress. When she studied them separately, McNamara found bisexual veterans are 2.5 times more likely to suffer severe depression

than straight veterans. “Even when I controlled for a wide range of specific demographic and military-related variables that might put some populations at higher risk for certain mental health issues, the results still indicated that bisexual veterans fare more poorly in terms of mental health outcomes,” she said. Though more research needs to be done to determine the cause, McNamara points to bi erasure as a possibility.

Intersex

New Jersey to add gender neutral marker to birth certificates

Gender neutral birth certificates will be available in New Jersey coming Feb. 1, according to New Jersey News 12. The move was intended to expand transgender rights, but will also make birth certificates more accurate for intersex people. Until now, parents of intersex children had to decide whether they wanted to label their child as male or female, and some infants are even subjected to invasive surgeries that try to “normalize” their sex characteristics. The bill will also

allow residents to change their gender marker without proof of surgery. “Just because your sex assigned at birth is one thing, it does not necessarily mean that it is something that’s going to be consistent with your gender identity throughout your life,” Ashley Chiappano from Garden State Equality told News 12. New Jersey joined New York, Oregon, California and Washington in adding a non-binary option to birth certificates.

Amber Harrell and Jessica Fowler were arrested and charged with sexually assaulting a transgender woman at a bar in North Carolina. The woman was checking her hair and makeup in the bathroom when the two women began harassing, groping, and exposing themselves to her, according to the New York Times. They went back into the bar where a bartender could see the woman was uncomfortable. “[The bartender] could see I was visibly uncomfortable. She asked the girl two times to stop. The director of the company that owns the bar where the incident took place said they tried to make sure she was OK. “Once they came out of the restroom and it was made clear of what was happening, we immediately stepped in to stop the situation and make sure she was O.K.” She ended up having a panic attack. India’s army chief gets grilled for homophobic comments

Oxford professor compares gay sex to bestiality

India’s army chief, General Bipin Rawat said gay sex wouldn’t be allowed in his army, and activists are saying he is “ill-informed” and “ignorant.” The Indian military forces have laws separate from the rights civilians enjoy, for example, the right to have sex with the same gender, according to Reuters. “If you guys want to do it, go ahead, but it will not happen here,” Rawat said at a press conference in New Delhi. Gay rights campaigners, like Ashok Row Kavi, are saying Rawat is not only homophobic, but is using his power irresponsibly. “He must understand that he is heading one of the largest fighting forces in the world and this force is bound to have a large number of homosexuals whether he likes it or not,” Reuters

reported Kavi saying. “General Rawat must look into their happiness, good health and general welfare. He should not go on a witch-hunt and persecute them. It’s ridiculous.”

Oxford students are calling for a professor’s firing after he compared gay sex to bestiality. He also said it’s similar to child abuse. More than 400 people have signed the petition to remove John Finnis, 78, from Oxford’s faculty, according to Gay Star News. One of the authors of the petition, Alex Benn, said he shouldn’t be able to teach students he discriminates against. “I started this campaign not only to address the specific issue of Finnis’ role at Oxford, but to get Oxford to make up its mind – either it’s in support of equality or it’s not,” Benn said. An Oxford spokesperson said the University doesn’t support harrassment, but does promote the staff and students’ freedom of speech.

Gay rapper killed in Puerto Rico

Australian officials ask gay asylum seekers if they swallow semen

Kevin Fret, a rapper and LGBT advocate, was shot dead on Jan. 10 in Puerto Rico. The 25-year-old was shot twice in San Juan, according to the New York Times. Police are now looking for another man who was with Fret, but fled the scene quickly after he was shot. They are not ruling out a hate crime. Fret was known as Latin trap’s first openly gay artist. His manager, Eduardo Rodriguez, confirmed his death in a statement before the police released the victim’s name. “His passion was music, and [he] still had a lot to do,” Rodriguez said. “This violence must stop. go. We must all unite in these difficult times, and ask for much peace for our beloved Puerto Rico.”

In an interview to receive their Australian visas, a gay Bangladeshi couple seeking asylum were asked personal questions about their sex lives, including if they swallow each other’s semen. Buzzfeed uncovered a list of questions they were asked in the 2012 interview, supposedly to establish whether they were in a relationship. Australian authorities ended up denying their visa request. The immigration officer asked questions like, “Why was drinking his cum a problem?” and “Did he ejaculate... And then oral sex was given to you. Did you come?” The Australian Refugee Review Tribunal overturned the officer’s decision to deny their requests, saying the questioning was “intrusive” and “very intimate.” But Anna Brown, with Equality

Australia, told BuzzFeed this wasn’t an isolated incident. “Ridiculously, there have been instances where gay people have been tested on their knowledge of Oscar Wilde or particular gay nightclubs on Oxford Street, and applicants have felt compelled to produce footage of sexual encounters to prove their claim,” Brown said.

Hawaii Rep warned Democrats of ‘homosexual extremists’ in 2004

T

wo more candidates joined the field in what will likely be a crowded Democratic party primary. Former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro and Representative Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii) declared their intentions to seek the Presidency. The duo join Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Massachusetts) as early entries into the 2020 campaign. Castro, 44, HUD secretary in the Obama administration, is trying to become the country’s first Latino President. He made his announcement on Saturday in San Antonio, where he served as mayor for five years. “Today, we live in a world in which brainpower is the new currency of success,” Castro said. “If we want to compete – and we better – we need everybody’s talent. We don’t have a single person to waste.” On Friday, Gabbard told CNN commentator Van Jones she was off and running. Her announcement, however, was greeted by revelations of anti-gay positions Gabbard held in 2004. Then a 22-year-old state representative, Gabbard testified against a bill that sought to legalize same-sex civil unions. “To try to act as if there is a difference between ‘civil unions’ and same-sex marriage is dishonest, cowardly and

extremely disrespectful to the people of Hawaii,” Gabbard said. “As Democrats, we should be representing the views of the people, not a small number of homosexual extremists.” Gabbard, 37, is the first American Samoan and first Hindu member of Congress. A decorated Army officer, Gabbard has deployed twice to Middle Eastern war zones. She currently sits on the House Armed Services and Foreign Affairs Committees. Gabbard told Jones there are numerous concerning challenges that Americans face that she wants to help solve. “There is one issue that is central to the rest, and that is the issue of war and peace,” she added. Other Democratic candidates mulling a run are: former Vice President Joe Biden, Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, Senator Kamala Harris of California, Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey, former Texas Representative Beto O’Rourke and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand of New York. Meanwhile, on the Republican side, no one has stepped up to challenge sitting President Donald Trump, although several names are being floated by Beltway insiders. Ohio Governor John Kasich, Senator Mitt Romney of Utah and Maryland Governor Larry Hogan have been mentioned as possible GOP contenders.

Gay Winners of The Week: 1. Jared Polis, Colorado Governor: Polis, sworn in last week, declared Colorado solid, strong, successful, daring and bold in his state of the state speech. Polis is believed to be the first known gay man elected to one of America’s governorships. He is a father of two who represented Colorado in the U.S. Congress prior to being elected Governor.

2. Pete Buttigieg, South Bend Indiana Mayor: Speculation continues to swirl

around Mayor Pete’s possible 2020 campaign. In an interview with Washington Post journalist Jonathan Capehart, Buttigieg fashioned a pitch to Democratic primary voters: “Want a Democratic message that can fit on a bumper sticker? How about: Freedom, Democracy, Security,” Buttigieg tweeted on Jan. 8.

Celebs Who

Came Out In 2018 ‘Glee’s’ Kevin McHale, YouTube’s Anna Akana, Singer Betty Who and more

Lee Pace, Actor

David-Elijah Nahmod

Pace first attracted attention in 2003 when he was cast as Calpernia Addams, a real life transgender woman, in the TV movie “Soldier’s Girl.” The film tells the true story of Addams, who, while working in a drag show in a Tennessee bar, falls in love with a straight soldier who lives on a nearby army base. The two have a brief but passionate affair which comes to a tragic end when the soldier is murdered by a homophobic fellow soldier. The film received a great deal of acclaim, and Pace’s future was assured. The actor has since been cast in a variety of roles, including in high profile films such as “Twilight: Breaking Dawn, Part 2,” and Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln.” He will soon be seen in the Marvel Universe super-hero film “Captain Marvel.” He has also appeared on Broadway in classic gay plays such as Larry Kramer’s “The Normal Heart” and Tony Kushner’s “Angels In America.” In a February 2018 interview with W. Magazine, he said that it was important for gay actors to play gay roles. “I’ve dated men, I’ve dated women,” he said. “I don’t know why anyone would care. I’m an actor and I play roles. To be honest, I don’t know what to say--I find your question intrusive.”

Actor

Betty Who, Pop Star Australian dance music artist Betty Who has long felt at home within the LGBT community. Her performances have become a fixture at Pride celebrations, and she is an outspoken supporter of LGBT rights. According to an October 2018 posting at Pride.com, Who was recently asked by a fan if she ever felt “out of place” in the LGBT community. Who’s response was priceless. “Not that I should have to justify myself to you or anyone, but I have been in relationships with both men and women,” she said. “I have been deeply, earth shatteringly in love with both men and women. Just because I happen to be engaged to a man doesn’t mean that I haven’t found a home within the gay community.”

Ronan Farrow, Journalist

Son of 1960s/70s film star Mia Farrow, Ronan Farrow has made a name for himself as an investigative journalist, reporting for NBC News on transgender issues. He has also been published in New Yorker Magazine. Farrow’s sexuality was long the subject of speculation. He confirmed the rumors in April 2018, when his work was honored by the Point Foundation. “Being a part of the LGBT community, which recognized that reporting I was doing early on and elevated it, and has been such a stalwart source of support through the sexual assault reporting I did involving survivors who felt equally invisible — that has been an incredible source of strength for me,” he said at the time. “LGBT people are some of the bravest and most potent change agents and leaders I have encountered, and the most forceful defenders of the vulnerable and voiceless, because they know what it’s like to be there.”

Kevin McHale, Actor and Singer Formerly a member of the boy band NLT, McHale rose to stardom when he played Artie Abrams on the LGBT friendly musical drama “Glee.” He later appeared as the late gay AIDS activist Bobbi Campbell in ABC TV’s gay historical drama “When We Rise.” In April 2018 he came out on Twitter, citing Ariana Grande’s “No Tears Left To Cry” as his inspiration. “No Tears Left To Cry is gayer than me and I accept,” he tweeted. McHale is currently dating “When We Rise” star Austin P. McKenzie.

Jaden Smith and Tyler The Creator, Media Celebrities Smith is the son of mega-movie stars Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, while Tyler The Creator is a rising star and record producer on the rap music scene. In November 2018 Pride.com reported that Smith made an announcement at the Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival in Los Angeles, at which Tyler was serving as host. Said Smith: “I just wanna tell you, and Tyler doesn’t want to say, but Tyler’s my motherf***ing boyfriend, and he’s been my motherf***ing boyfriend my whole f***ing life!” Smith’s declaration surprised no one, whose sexuality has long been a subject of speculation.

Anna Akana,

YouTube Star, Actress, Author Akana is best known for her YouTube channel, which has over two million subscribers and over two hundred million views. As an actress she appeared in the films “Ant-Man” and “Hello, My Name Is Doris.” She is also a business woman, having launched a clothing line called Ghosts And Stars. In 2017 she authored a book: “So Much I Want To Tell You: Letters To My Little Sister,” in which she comes to terms with her sister’s suicide. In 2018 she came out as a queer woman when she accepted her Streamy Award. The awards are given out to honor excellence in online video. “People need us more than ever,” she said. “Marginalized groups need us more than ever. I’m not only a woman of color, but I’m a Queer woman. Please get out to the polls and vote.”

Jake Borelli, Actor Borelli has become a familiar face on television, appearing on the Nickelodeon series “The Thundermans,” and on the popular ABC medical drama Grey’s Anatomy. He publicly came out as gay on Instagram in November 2018, the same night his “Grey’s Anatomy” character, Dr. Levi Schmitt, also came out as gay. “As a gay guy myself, tonight’s episode was so special to me,” he posted. “This is exactly the kind of story I craved as a young gay kid growing up in Ohio, and it blows my mind that I’m able to bring to life Dr. Levi Schmitt as he begins to grapple with his own sexuality this season on Grey’s Anatomy. His vulnerability and courage inspire me every day, and I hope he can do the same for you. To all of you who feel like little Levis out there, know that I do to, that you are seen, and that we’re all in this together.”

MARIJUANA IS A MEDICINE, NOT A MENACE A New Year’s Update on Florida Dispensaries

Cathy Jordan, cannabis advocate.x

Norm Kent

norm.kent@sfgn.com

I

am delighted to report that more and more government officials are promoting sanity in pot laws. Cannabis crosses political parties and generational lines. Good weed gets you high whether you think the last attorney general, Jeff Sessions was a Neanderthal or you think Beto O’Rourke should be the next Democratic presidential candidate, which I do. I was right 50 years ago when I said as a Hofstra University college student on Hempstead, Long Island in New York in 1969 that pot should be legal. A half century later, I am still correct. Only the weed is a lot better. Over the years, I have learned that if a man stands his ground, and there abides, the whole world will eventually come around to him. Today, in 2019, 65 percent of America and apparently 84 percent of Wilton Manors agrees with me. The legitimate powers of government should reach no further than controlling acts which are injurious to others. Freedom means having the right to be stupid, whether your parents or partners approve or not. As Thomas Jefferson once said, “It does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are twenty gods or no god. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg.” Pot never should have been criminalized. Outside of making North Dakota a state, locking people up for smoking weed was one of the dumbest things our government has ever done. In Florida, our new Commissioner of Agriculture is Nikki Fried, a Jewish woman and law graduate who will give new meaning to the High Holy Days. She supports the legalization of marijuana. Nikki has said she will be appointing a statewide Director of Cannabis to her agency. Man, I have held that position my whole life. Weed makes everything better, from sex to food to reading SFGN.

More seriously, on the right side of the aisle, cannabis has found surprising supporters. Importantly, in Florida there are people like Congressman Matt Saetz, a northwest Florida Republican who I would ordinarily have nothing in common with, outside of sports and fast cars. However, Saetz is amongst a cadre of Republicans, like the former speaker of the House of Representatives, John Boehner, who have actively promoted a new direction for federal marijuana policy. Damn, it’s about time. Congressman Saetz has already partnered with newly elected and young Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York State, to revise the Neanderthal laws. Last year, when Attorney General Sessions called for a crackdown on cannabis, Saetz stated it was a “cruel plan that harms some of our most vulnerable fellow Americans. I have seen children who have been helped by medical marijuana when all other treatments have failed. Some have gone from surgeries and seizures to baseball games and homecoming dances.” He’s right. Cathy Jordan has suffered from ALS since 1986. When I met her back then, she was given 3-5 years to live. Along with the power and love of her devoted husband, smoking medical marijuana has kept her alive. When Elvy Mussika was acquitted of growing pot in her Hollywood backyard in 1988, she was nearly going blind from glaucoma. The THC in cannabis reduced the intraocular pressures in her eyes, and thirty years later, she can still see. Right now, despite 32 states moving in an opposite direction, cannabis is still regulated as a “Schedule 1 drug.” This means that the regulated substance has “no medicinal value.” Come on, we all know better by

In Florida, you can’t sell the flowered plant. Once we can, dispensaries will pop up everywhere, and the industry will flourish.

now, especially all those bar and restaurant workers that hang out after work in the alleyway by the Alibi in the Manors. Encouragingly, the new nominee for Attorney General, William Barr, also stated in his confirmation hearings yesterday that he would support a continuation of the Obama Era regulatory guidelines. These rules allow those states that have invested in medicinal marijuana laws to continue to rely on the rules generated by previous attorney generals. This allows dispensaries operating in those states to continue to run their business without fear of being raided or shut down. Florida residents also passed a constitutional amendment to provide for medical marijuana two years ago. The regulatory system is flawed, and Florida’s new governor has said he will fix it. Now would be a good time. Unfortunately, the first week in office for Ron DeSantis presented no encouragement. His legal team went into the Court of Appeals and argued that the legislative ban on smoking marijuana be upheld. His actions make his campaign promise hollow. A Leon County Circuit judge had previously

struck down the smoking ban, but the decision was stayed after the State of Florida appealed. DeSantis could have made history by killing the appeal. He did not. He made the argument for maintaining it. During the oral arguments last week in Tallahassee, an appellate panel of judges interrogated Florida officials about whether the legislature had not usurped the will of our citizens by using its political veto power to override an amendment its citizens overwhelmingly supported. The Department of Health told the judges that since smoking causes cardiovascular and respiratory health problems, the Florida legislature could limit delivery methods to protect the public. I call BS on that. It does not matter what side of the political aisle you are on, Americans have learned that cannabis is a cure, not a cancer. Let’s hope Ron DeSantis learns that as well. Our citizens voted for smokable medical marijuana. A lawmaker in the state house should not make that choice. You should make the call, by yourself, with your partner, in your own house. Nothing less than your inalienable right to free choice is at stake. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

Keep Your Hiney

Healthy With Fiber Dr. Elie Schochet

T

elevision and the Internet bombard us with the next best superfoods or supplement often claiming benefits that are unproven or untested. Products like acai berries, probiotics, lycopene, and green coffee come to mind as the most recent darlings of the supplement craze. Fiber, while not technically a supplement, should be a major part of any well balanced diet and its benefits in the prevention of gastrointestinal complaints (constipation, hemorrhoids, diarrhea and diverticulitis), heart disease and diabetes are well studied and accepted. Unfortunately, while fiber is found in most fruits, vegetables, beans and grains, even those eating a healthy well balanced diet are often still fiber deficient. Dietary fiber stays in the intestines and is not absorbed or digested. It can modulate the digestion of other nutrients and affect the consistency of the stool. It is made up of soluble fiber and insoluble fiber. Soluble fiber dissolves in water and can be found in most fruits, oats, barley, peas and beans. Insoluble fiber comes from plant cells and does not dissolve in water. It can be found in wheat, rye, vegetables and wheat bran. Fiber adds bulk to the stool, making it softer and easier to pass without needing the use of laxatives or stool softeners. A diet rich in fiber will often make cleaning up prior to any bedroom activities easier because fiber acts like a lint brush of sorts, cleaning up any residue or debris and making our post clean bottoms even cleaner. Fiber supplementation has been shown to improve cholesterol profiles, and reduce the risk of coronary artery disease and stroke by 40 to 50 percent. It has been shown to reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes as it can help control blood glucose levels. The recommended amount of dietary fiber is 20 to 35 grams per day. The fiber content of most foods can be found online or on nutrition labels. Breakfast cereals and/or oatmeal can be a very good source of extra fiber.

A diet rich in fiber will often make cleaning up prior to any bedroom activities easier.

Another simple solution is to replace white rice and white bread with brown rice and whole-grain breads. For those who do not like high-fiber foods, there are a number of fiber supplements on the market, many consisting of psyllium. For those that do shakes, smoothies, and pre and post workout drinks, 1-2 tbsp of a tasteless and odorless clear fiber can make a huge difference. When starting a fiber supplement, it is important to start slowly and to use adequate amounts of nondiuretic fluids. Avoid sugary or caffeinated drinks. This

will help to avoid gas, bloating and cramping which can occur if too much fiber is ingested too quickly. Be wary of fiber pills or fiber bars as they are often lower in fiber than the powders and not enough fluid is ingested with them. Changes in bowel movements, diarrhea and constipation can all be normal from time to time, but if you feel that these affect your life daily even with proper fiber, you ought to seek medical care as there are often reversible causes and lifestyle modifications that can be made to take control over your life and not live in the bathroom.

Dr. Schochet is a colon and rectal surgeon practicing at South Florida Colorectal Institute in Aventura. He has the largest anal cancer prevention program in South Florida and captains the Happy Hiney Florida AIDS walk team, raising over $270,000 for local charities over the last four years.

By Sal Torre On the same evening that President Trump addressed the nation from the Oval Office last week, members of our City Commission seemed to be in lockstep with the notion of building a wall. Locally that wall will begin at NW 30th Court and carve out a small section of the surrounding neighborhood to protect them from the outside world, but especially from the hordes of developers who are invading our borders and stealing our properties. Wow, on the same evening that we heard from our President, claiming of an emergency crisis flooding over our southern border, based on fear mongering and fake news, should it come as any surprise that the majority of our city commission fell prey to the same nonsense? For many years, the city has paid for and commissioned studies from regional planning groups and zoning experts only to be swayed by a few residents driven by misinformation, fear, and fake news.

WMG

One resident who spoke during Public Comments claimed that city bulldozers were already positioned to start demolition of their homes. Others requested that the city inform residents of NW 30th Court when the demolition will begin. Fake news and fear mongering are the new norm, and our City Commission is not immune from this devastating new reality. Instead of having the leadership to plan correctly for the city’s future, most of our commissioners chose to give in to short-term fear and misinformation -- not a good way to begin the New Year, and not a good way to break out of the starting gate for some of our newly elected officials. Vice Mayor Tom Green passionately stated the truth behind the proposed Land Use Changes and explained how future zoning would offer much better protection to our neighbors on 30th Court, our Westside community and our city as a whole. The TOC Mixed Use designation would provide so much more protection and input into the future zoning and development of the area. Unfortunately, a few property owners were able to use the fear of imminent demolition of homes and uncontrollable destruction of their neighborhood to convince not only their neighbors, but also City Commissioners who should know better. The City Commission has had multiple studies by regional planning groups, at a huge cost to the city. Our own Planning and Zoning Board voted unanimously in support of the proposed Land Use Changes in question. We also have advisory boards and community organizations that offer solid community input to our elected officials and city management. We elected our officials to make the tough decisions on what is best for our city. This decision to carve out, to figuratively build a wall around a few city blocks, is not a good example of such decision making. Let us take a closer look at the reality on the ground. A large number of properties along this stretch of NW 30th Court are non-homesteaded properties. Many are not owned by concerned residents, many are rental properties, and who knows how many are vacation rentals. If I were a resident of NW 30th Court, I would be more concerned about the future of these properties and their uncontrolled effect on my

quality of life and my property values. These residents missed a golden opportunity to have a much greater say in what happens in their community. A TOC Mixed Use designation would give the surrounding community a far greater say in what would be permissible uses of surrounding properties. However, due to misinformation, fear, and fake news, the residents of NW 30th Court will be faced with a new reality. Now that the City Commission has directed city staff to begin the process of removing this area from the Land Use changes and future zoning of a TOC Mixed Use Corridor, they will be left to suffer whatever comes their way in the future, having very little or no say whatsoever in what gets developed in the surrounding commercial, multi-unit residential and nonresident properties, while the rest of the city suffers from the poor choices made by a majority of our commissioners. I have to be careful here. Calling out our City Commission when they make bad decisions does not make for pleasant relations. However, doing just that will make us a stronger community. Having a debate on what is the right path for us to take in our community is not a negative as some will claim, but rather a strength that often leads to better decisions. Having such a debate is what will continue to make life just better here. WMG

We elected our officials to make the tough decisions on what is best for our city.

Real Estate

Starting the Year With a Bang By James Oaksun I have chosen to begin my 2019 oeuvre with an inflammatory question: Can we predict where real estate prices may be heading over the short term? There are two related reasons for investigating this. First, should the overall economy continue to expand through July 2019, it will represent the longest economic expansion in this country in its 242-year history. Ever. (Regardless of which political figures take the credit, it is a fact.) In addition, we know that real estate prices in Greater Fort Lauderdale have been increasing briskly since mid-2011. As of last Sept. 30 valuations have advanced, on average, by 81 percent from that trough. For how much longer will this uptrend continue? And are there some early warning markers out there that might give us an inkling of an imminent change in the trendline? To begin to analyze this, I downloaded metro Fort Lauderdale data from the Federal Housing Finance Agency, which go back to 1975. (It is a good thing I didn’t have any questions about the data. As of my writing,

the Federal government is shut down. Sadly, statisticians in the Housing Department are not considered “essential Federal employees.”) From this data, we may easily calculate relationships in prices, comparing what we knew as of a certain date with what then happened over the near-term. Bear in mind that you cannot predict precisely what is coming. Rather, I think there is some value in determining whether established trends might continue, as well as identifying turning points on the major trend. This is especially the case for people who do not have a firm date by which they must buy or sell. In the table included here, you can see how closely pricing in future quarters relates to the current pricing. Perhaps not surprisingly, the closer you are to the present, the more accurate the prediction you can make. As more time elapses, the prediction becomes less robust, holding everything else constant. The results bear similarity to “technical analysis” of security prices, in that an established trend will tend to continue. If

3 •

the pricing trend is up, near-term future pricing tends to be higher, and vice versa. To summarize Stage One of the modeling: 1. If housing values are INCREASING, they will tend to continue to INCREASE over the next year or so (but at a slower rate); AND 2. If housing values are DECREASING, they will tend to continue to DECREASE over the forthcoming 12 months (but at a slower rate); UNLESS 3. “Something happens.”

January 16, 2019

In my next column, I will take a look at whether there is a “something” or “somethings” that can be shown statistically and mathematically to suggest an imminent inflection in the trendline. Northwest 30th Court Roadmap to Our Future  Continued from page 1

Commissioners Paul Rolli and Julie Carson also agreed that the neighborhood should be pulled from the TOC. Mayor Justin Flippen supported the area’s inclusion in the TOC but agreed to its removal in the spirit of consensus. Vice Mayor Tom Green, however, was the sole dissenter. Green said that changing the area’s land use plan would make residents’ property more valuable and urged the homeowners to consider their request carefully. “This land use change is literally a gift from the city to you for your property values. The triangle area in Wilton Manors was zoned residential, one home, and when we talked about a change there with the zoning everyone was afraid of what it would do to their property values,” Green said. “You know what? It did change their property values. They went up by 25 to 50 percent within two years. Anytime you make something that’s higher in density or the possibility or the potential of it, again, it is a gift.” The city’s Planning and Zoning Board in July 2018 recommended the TOC be approved, saying the changes would help improve the

For the last few months, I’ve been sharing with you the details of the Wilton Manors Strategic Plan. The third priority area of the plan is strategic growth and redevelopment in the Island City. This is an exciting time for Wilton Manors. We are poised on the cusp of transitioning from a traditional single family community to a truly urban village. In order to do so, we must be very careful to preserve the quality of life in those single family home neighborhoods while increasing density on the primary corridors. The devil is in the details on this one, and some might say that the transformation has been too long in coming. Our development standards, unified land development regulations, comprehensive plan, and city code reflect past values (some of which are frankly outdated), and all of these rules which govern how properties get built need to be evaluated and updated. It is rare for a municipality to update all at once, but our city staff has been engaged in this process for about a year and a half and is well on the way to having a finished product. These rules include changing standards to reflect the need to account for sea level rise and energy efficiency in our building code, prepare for increased capacity in our infrastructure (like water and sewer), and encourage building on primary corridors and transit routes. The Andrews Avenue/Oakland Park Boulevard Transit Oriented Corridor is an example of these changes. We have also developed an

affordable housing plan and will be implementing a first time homebuyer assistance program later this year. It’s a small program, since we are a smaller city, but I am committed to doing our part to ensure that Wilton Manors is a community where all are welcome. The essence of this priority area of growth and redevelopment is in the development and execution of an Economic Development Plan. The city now has such a plan, and is in the beginning phases of implementation of the plan. Key initiatives include identifying potential feasibility and locations for a hotel, bringing in new Class A office space, completing a master site plan for a commuter rail station, as well as a master site plan for the city hall property. This goal also includes the creation of additional parking and promoting the city as a tourism destination. Stay tuned for exciting things to come! Next month, we will complete our look back at the City’s Strategic Plan accomplishments with the fourth and final priority area: Innovating and Adapting for the Future. In your service,

The Wilton Manors Art & Entertainment Expo Adds Something New to Saturdays By Natalya Jones Art Basel is over, but that doesn’t mean you have to wait until next year to pretend to be cultured or post “creative” selfies to Instagram. The Wilton Manors Art & Entertainment Expo will be taking place later this month, perfect for those who have a New Year’s resolution to get out of the house and actually be social. About 13 or more artists will be present including Andrew Mecham (Medium is Water Color). The best part? Admission is free. “There are a lot of great artists that have great pieces of art that fits any decor,” said Jeffrey Sterling, Marketing Coordinator of Wilton Manors Entertainment Group. “There are also artists that make jewelry for men and women. Not only that, but it’s a great way to get out and meet others in the community.” Added Sterling, “Wilton Drive has a multitude of restaurants, food shops, small businesses and bars that are able to appeal to a broad section of people that helps enhance the event.” Not to fret if this event interferes with your

The Wilton Manors Public Library was inaugurated in the 1960s. In 1970, local residents created the Friends of the Library of Wilton Manors. Its mission statement supports the continued growth of the library and its resources. To follow the history of the FLWM is to learn of a group of devotees that have continued to help a centerpiece of Wilton Manors. The American Library Association (ALA) recently held its 13th annual “National Friends of Library Week.” The event is meant to commemorate the impact of similar organizations nationwide. These groups partner with local libraries and enhance their specific chapter’s offerings. With contributions made by FLWM, the Wilton Manors library was the first to obtain public access computers in all of Broward County. They continue to support the library’s access to technology, and they maintain the computers they purchased. When the library moved to a new building in 2003, they provided $120,000 dollars in new furnishings. Their more lighthearted projects include a patron subscription to the popular family database, ancestry.com. Benjamin Little, treasurer of the group, is very proud of the group’s contribution to the children’s section. Several years ago, the group installed acoustic paneling to cut down noise in this area of the

library. The treasurer does mention that the children’s story hour on Monday mornings is one to “restore faith in humanity.” The Friends of the Library also tries to organize a quarterly lecture for adults, described as “topical, interesting, and not political.” In October of 2018 they hosted Alyn Darnay, an acclaimed film director/producer. This was a well received event, free and open to the public. Their current promotion is for their next event “The Sea and Me – Prevent a CO2 Calamity,” taking place on Jan. 31, and put together by the Youth Environmental Alliance. The event is at 7 p.m. with Happy Hour at 6:30 p.m , and promises to be a fun event for those interested. They hope to see many members of the community. The FLWM has a history of lobbying the City and external groups for grants. These grants make crucial programs possible. They also remain informed of City budget and planning meetings. On several occasions, Broward County intended a takeover of the library, and they kept constituents informed of the proposed changes. The Wilton Manors Library continues to be an independent institution. Currently, the FLWM is looking for volunteers to tutor younger children, as well as participants for their monthly book tent sales.

Chamber Chat By the Wilton Manors Business Association

In December, the Wilton Manors Business Association held a holiday concert in Richardson Park, Holiday Spectacular in the Park. It was our first annual concert and we plan on doing it again this year. Proceeds from the concert, along with a donation from WMBA allowed us to donate $1,000 each to our beneficiaries, Wilton Manors Elementary School, and The City of Wilton Manors, Department of Leisure Services, for their youth programs. We presented the checks on Tuesday, Jan. 8 at the City Commissioner’s Meeting. Accepting on behalf of Wilton Manors Elementary School were Principal Melissa Holtz, and Magnet Program Coordinator Lori Goldsmith. Accepting on behalf of the City of Wilton Manors was Director of Leisure Services Patrick Cann. WMG

You can become a member of the FLWM by making a donation to their website: FriendsOfTheWiltonManorsLibrary.org/membership.php and questions about joining these events should be directed towards info@ friendsofthewiltonmanorslibrary.org.

A Look Back at Some of the Most Read Gazette Stories of 2018 Walmart, public sex, lesbian bars and more By Nicholas Adkins

File photos.

As we begin 2019, SFGN takes a look back at the most read stories from the Wilton Manors Gazette. Park Walmart in 1. Oakland Final Stages of Approval After news hit that a Walmart would be replacing the Kmart lot on 670 E Oakland Park Blvd, some residents in Oakland Park and Wilton Manors were for the new Walmart and some were against. “The city would have a challenge in defending an action brought in approving the plat. It would be a challenge to defend relative to a ministerial act,” City Attorney D.J. Doody said, advising commissioners that it would be hard for the city to prevail if Walmart had sued before Oakland Park approved the project. The planned Walmart in Oakland Park has now been approved by Broward County and Oakland Park. Now, all that’s left is a review of the plans. There have not been any further updates.

Lesbian Bar Closes Down in Wilton Manors

A little over a year after opening, G Spot Bar was the latest Wilton Drive business to close its doors this past February. Lisette Gomez, coowner of G Spot, Wilton Manors’ only lesbian bar, announced the closing on social media on Feb. 16, with G Spot officially closing Feb. 18. “I would like to thank everyone who supported us from day one and never stopped supporting us. I appreciate you! Unfortunately, it was not enough. This was not my choice and it doesn’t come easy. I worked hard to build a place for the ladies to call their own, investing my retirement because I believed there would be support. My partners trusted me when I said the ladies would support us and that was not always the case,” Gomez wrote. She went on to write that G Spot lost revenue because it was forced to close multiple weeks because of Hurricane Irma, and another incident involving fried air conditioning units. While there is no longer an official place

for the ladies in Wilton Manors, Rumors has won several times for “Best Bar for Lesbians” in South Florida Gay News’ annual contest. Also new to the drive is Club Listen located at 2440 Wilton Drive. While the bar is new the location has been home to several LGBT bars including Chardees, Progress Bar and New Moon, an iconic lesbian bar that closed years ago. Club Listen is a music-themed bar and has featured performers “The Synergy Twins” and singers Dina Martin, Deni Kent, Mickey Havens and Suzy Howard, according to the club’s Facebook page. “Overall the intention is to create a musical environment and I understand they have booked some rather good local entertainers to perform,” a Yelp reviewer writes. It appears the bar has already attracted a strong lesbian following.

in the Park: Colohatchee 3. Sex Still a Hot Spot Colohatchee Park has been used as a sex rendezvous for over a decade, and even appears on a gay cruising website, CruisingGays.com, as a place with “All kinds of guys from twinks to older gents to musclemen looking for a quick blow job.” “Please read and believe the sign posted at the park entrance [...] “Due to environmental and criminal violations, this park will be under video surveillance.” If you play with fire, you’re bound to be burned,” a comment for the park on CruisingGays as far back as 2009 states. It currently holds a 1 star out of 5 rating. Corbin Boyd, who recently ran unsuccessfully against current Wilton Manors Mayor Justin Flippen, made a statement in regards to the park on his campaign website. “Colohatchee Park – don’t take your kids there: The bathrooms are closed due to the sexual activity in this park which has been going on for decades. We spend millions on police and park rangers yet we still have this problem. Our city’s only off leash park where

dogs can run is closed two days a week. Dogs need to be walked every day – the park needs to be open every day,” a dedicated page on the website reads.

Owner Threatens 4. Nightclub Lawsuit Against Wilton Manors The owner of Le Boy Bar in Fort Lauderdale, Sean David, has followed through on his threat to sue the City of Wilton Manors for interfering with the opening of his gay bar, Ballz, in January of 2017. There have so far been no court updates, but the Wilton Manors community has had mixed opinions on the club and the case. “Johnsons is a male dancer / stripper bar. Wilton Manors was concerned because he had private rooms in his old place in FTL (yes they were getting paid for sexual activity in there). Ballz was a stupid name, tacky design and stupid concept that ruined a beloved [sports] bar location - THAT is why it failed,” one Wilton Manors local speculated. “Good for him,” another commented, “If

Hooters can operate in the tourist district on A1A, then so can Ballz in Wilton Manors. This is clearly a case of homophobia and discrimination.”

Now on Wilton Manors 5. Vote Wayfinding Sign Concepts After months of discussions and a vote by the public, commissioners approved a design for the wayfinding sign program. At their May 8 meeting, commissioners voted on concept 1B, which was also the one most favored by the public. According to the public Wilton Manors Economic Development Task Force minutes on Sep. 12 of this past year, Director Roberta Moore stated the Axia firm is currently finalizing all the designs and locations for the wayfinding project. Moore stated the project will be done in phases due to the budget. She also stated she will soon in the future provide the EDTF with the Capital Improvement Plan to show the five year breakdown. WMG

one are the days of “Blue Laws” which mandated commercial establishments be closed on Sundays because people were to be in church. Now people are free to shop and play or just sleep in on Sunday mornings rather than go to church. Why choose to go to church anyway? Going to church in the past for some was anything but a positive and affirming experience. In the eyes of many, churches are bastions of judgmentalism. My response: Don’t go to such places! But please don’t paint all churches with a broad brush denying yourself the opportunity to encounter and grow with God; because there are houses of worship that “get it,” that understand God is one who came out of love, for love, and in love, as Emmanuel (meaning God-With-Us). The question “Why go to church?” is fatally flawed and outdated. The days when people went to church to passively watch a minister “enact or do church” without uncomfortable and unwanted challenges to one’s biased beliefs are thankfully gone as well. Those were seldom spiritually vibrant worship experiences. Instead, a healthy and holy community – one that can nurture, feed, and support you – is one where people

go to be, and to learn to be, Church. It’s a community which takes seriously that in Holy Communion we receive what we are to become – Christ’s loving presence in and for the world. You are uniquely you! We are greater when we – in all our diversity – are one as God is one; so come as you are – as one loved by God – to perfect our love. This is the way we thrive – individually, as a community, and ultimately as a species. Here is also the way to find joy – real joy – in life. As you know, it’s in community that we find the profound joy of acceptance. Furthermore, it’s in community that we shed judgmentalism. By being Church we focus on reconciliation and togetherness. We eschew divisiveness and all the harsh, uncharitable emotions that come with denigrating some to puff up the supposedly elect few. Being Church radically says we are all worthy – not by earning it but rather by who we are and whose we are – all children of the one living God, whose light shines in every human being. I invite you to Christ’s church at St. Nicholas. This is who we are. This is who you are. Come, See, and Share Our Peace. Thrive in a life of love of self and others.

Keeping Them Together Brian McNaught

hen we found the silhouettes of the two guys and a dog, we knew nothing of Auguste Edouart. Ray and I were at an auction on the north shore of Boston, and Jeremy, the Irish Setter, was at home. We both spotted the pair, and decided to join the bidding for each one, individually. We got both. That was many years ago. We paid a lot, but it turned out they were worth at least what we paid, and they haven’t been apart since then. They’ve traveled to many states, and many homes, and the silhouetted dog came to represent different breeds, but they have always been within easy eye contact. It’s harder to keep a loving relationship together than it is a pair of rare pieces of art. A week ago, I learned of the divorce of two men whose beautiful, family and friends wedding I officiated on the beach of the Pines on Fire Island. The marriage was featured in The New York Times Sunday newspaper, in the Announcements that many gay men I know comb weekly. As you might imagine, I was shocked, saddened, and concerned for them. As it turned out, the sadness I experienced was for myself, as I had lost a significant piece of my romantic love mobile, which was now out of balance. The men in question are much younger than me, but they’ve been married for some time. Their email announcement assured the recipients that they continued to love the other, but after much soul searching, discussion, and therapy, they had decided together that life called them in different directions. These are mature, emotionally healthy guys who wanted their family and friends to be assured there was no “bad guy” in this decision. I responded in part, “If you two beautiful souls are happy with your decision to divorce, I applaud the courage you brought forth to struggle together for reconciliation, and then acceptance that you are being called to grow in different ways. There is no failure here. True love of another can’t be

measured in years. The love that remains between you is taking a different form. “Let gratitude for the life you’ve shared guide you as you deal with the messiness of separations. Things and money are meaningless. The question you will ask yourselves in the future won’t be, ‘Did I get everything due me?’ but rather, ‘Am I proud of the way I behaved?’” “You guys can’t truly separate from one another. Your bodies can. Your souls can’t. They are intertwined for eternity, just as mine is with you. We change each other. We learn from each other. We imprint ourselves in the souls of everyone we encounter. After the many years you shared life’s experiences, trust that you will forever be a manifestation of that dance.” In our 43 years together, Ray and I have imagined separating many times, but it was always the result of a hurtful moment, not a true feeling that we shouldn’t be together, or that life would be better without the other. We’ve had our moments when we each imagined what furnishings we’d take to decorate our new places, but those fantasies passed within a day or two, or a week, when we both came to realize that the fight was about nothing that couldn’t be addressed with loving, open communication. Sometimes our disenchantment from the other was the result of not being centered, of being tired, overwhelmed, jealous, hungry, confused, hurt, scared, unappreciated, etc. Every loving couple has these moments, and some of these “moments” may require interventions and outside counseling. But, if you prioritize your relationship, and love, if not lust, prevails, it can endure most anything. I look at my husband now, and I know he’s not the same guy I moved in with in 1976. Though younger, he looks older than me. His chronic, severe back pain has shortened both his fuse and our walks. We haven’t had sex in a long time because of the impact of his and my surgeries, and the meds we both take to deal with the pains and our prostates.

It’s harder to keep a loving relationship together than it is a pair of rare pieces of art.

But, when I look in his eyes, hold his hand, hear him laugh, watch him with children, see him care for Lincoln, and share with me his feelings, I know he is the soul with whom I still choose to dance.

Maybe when our bodies are both dead, the Auguste Edouart silhouettes of the two guys and the dog will be separated, but our souls are too intertwined for that to happen to us.

News for Foodies From Le Diner in Lauderdale to Vizcaya in Miami

Le Diner en Blanc de Fort Lauderdale

Le Diner en Blanc International. Photos via Facebook.

On June 3 last year, “Le Diner en Blanc de Paris” marked its 30th anniversary. A record 17,000 guests from Paris and around the world gathered at the Esplanade des Invalides to celebrate this historic moment. More than 130,000 foodies around the world have already embraced this unique al fresco dining experience. As stated very eloquently by the New York Times: “There are picnics and there are Picnics.” Launched in Paris in 1988 by François Pasquier and a handful of friends, it has grown into an international culinary sensation in 80 cities in 30 countries. While the technology behind the event may have changed over the years, the principles fueling this fantastic event have not: guests continue to gather at a secret location for the sole purpose of sharing a gourmet meal with good friends in one of their city’s most beautiful locations. In essence, Le Dîner en Blanc promotes friendship, elegance and gallantry. Over the course of the evening, guests experience the beauty and value of one of their city’s public spaces by participating in the unexpected. “Le Dîner en Blanc” will take over one of Fort Lauderdale’s public spaces on Feb.16 for its inaugural culinary event. To maintain its uniqueness as well as staying true to the tradition of Le Dîner en Blanc, guests must observe certain requirements and follow a few key rules: • Guests must be invited or get on the waiting list. (To sign up on the waiting list, visit fortlauderdale.dinerenblanc.com/register). • Once confirmed, each guest’s participation becomes mandatory, regardless of weather conditions. • Dress code: elegant and white only. Originality and creativity are encouraged as long as it is stylish and tasteful.

Vizcaya’s Launches Farm-to-Table Program

• Table setting: all white. • Only Champagne, wine or non-alcoholic beverages may be served. • Guests meet at assigned departure locations and are escorted by Dîner en Blanc volunteers to the secret location. • Guests must bring: A table, white chairs, white tablecloth and a picnic basket comprising of fine food and proper stemware and white dinnerware. “Fort Lauderdale has long been an iconic city known for its fine living, cultural influence, and as a popular tourist destination,” said Ken McCormack, co-host of Le Dîner en Blanc – Fort Lauderdale. “The city is primed for such a dazzling event and we are proud to host the very first edition of it and hope that it will pave the way towards establishing a long-standing tradition.” An option to pre-order food, which can be picked up at the site, will be available for those who do not wish to pack their own picnic baskets. Guests wishing to do so must reserve online through Le Dîner en Blanc website during the initial ticket registration. For full details on the rules and regulations, visit fortlauderdale.dinerenblanc.com.

Vizcaya Museum and Gardens has a historical connection to agriculture. Photo via Facebook.

Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is launching an innovative series of farmto-table programs rooted in its deep agricultural history. The focus of each program gives the participants a hands-on experience with edible plants presented in the context of the historic estate. Vizcaya’s history is steeped in the history of agriculture. Vizcaya’s original owner, James Deering, was Vice President of International Harvester, the global farm equipment manufacturing company. He built Vizcaya as his winter home in 1916. Vizcaya Village was also created at the same time to ensure the availability of produce, eggs, milk and other essentials needed to sustain the household. Pre-registration for all programs is required, with more information available at vizcayatickets.org.

Review: Island City Gets Mixed Results with ‘Midler and Manilow’ J.W. Arnold

I

f you love the music of Bette Midler and Barry Manilow, read no further and reserve your tickets today for “Bette & Barry: From Bathhouse to Broadway,” playing at Island City Stage. You won’t be disappointed with a two-hour cabaret that serves up all the biggest hits from both stars…and then some. If you are looking for an evening of musical theater, perhaps the show billed as “the concert that never was,” you may be challenged to find it in writer/director Michael Leeds’ thin script. The concept for the show arose from a suggestion from one of the Wilton Manorsbased theater’s board members to recreate the last performance Midler performed at New York City’s Continental Baths in 1971. Artistic director Andy Rogow even explored the possibility of performing the show in one of the local bathhouses, but learned women would be denied admission. Leeds came up with the idea of a fictional “reunion” between Midler and her former musical director and pianist. Here’s where things get confusing: Stars Mallory Newbro and Michael Ursua don’t really sound like Midler and Manilow and they definitely don’t look them, even in whispy ‘70s style wigs and lots of rhinestones and sequins. But, we learn in the opening minutes of the performance they’re not really supposed to be Midler and Manilow any way. “Bette & Barry” is not quite the “show within a show” but it’s never crystal clear why Newbro and Ursua are even there in the first place performing that show. Leeds works in lots of jokes—Midler’s famous tributes to bawdy Jewish comedian

Sophie Tucker, some hilarious audience participation in “Leader of the Pack,” and cleverly reworded lyrics to “Hello, Dolly!” (He has an almost encyclopedic knowledge of Broadway history.) But, hampered by the cheesy wigs, costumes and challenging concept, “Bette & Barry” seems more suited for cruise ship or theme park audiences. When it comes to the music, however, “Bette & Barry” is an unqualified success (see first paragraph). Michael Ursua is not only a talented actor, singer and pianist, he pulls extra duty as musical director. His arrangements and seamless medleys drive the show, highlighted by a goosebumpinducing, four-part a cappella arrangement of “The Rose” that closes the first act. Carbonell winner Newbro is simply a star. She shines throughout, both vocally and theatrically, milking every sentimental moment while offering plenty of wellmeasured comedic relief. Newbro is backed up by two “Harlettes,” Sabrina Lynn Gore with her smoky alto voice and newcomer Gaby Tortoledo. Some tweaks at the soundboard should improve the balance of their harmonies in “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” and other Midler ‘40s faves. The combo of Ursua, bassist Rupert Ziawinski and drummer Julie Jacobs never overpower the singers and even get to throw out some solo licks later in the show. And, thanks to the musical performances and the stylish set from Ardean Landhuis, the Wilton Theater Factory is successfully transformed into a swanky night club for two hours. For nearly the entire sold out audience, that was enough.

Island City Stage presents “Bette & Barry: From Bathhouse to Broadway” through Feb. 10 at Wilton Theater Factory, 2304 N. Dixie Hwy. in Wilton Manors. Tickets are $40 at IslandCityStage.org.

‘Broward bares it’ Returns to Support Local Nonprofits J.W. Arnold

M

ore than 100 performers will “take it off” next week in Wilton Manors to benefit two local charities. After a five-year hiatus, “Broward Bares It!” billed as a “one-night-only traipse through the world of tantalizing temptations, titillating temptresses and torrid testosterone,” will return to the Crystal Ballroom at the Venue on Thursday, Jan. 24. The show, produced by Bill Huelsman and directed by Terry DeCarlo, will feature more than 24 local acts, including drag and burlesque performers, singers, dancers and comedians, and benefit Deliver the Dream and Latinos Salud. “We are excited for the return of ‘Broward Bares It!’” DeCarlo said. “It’s an event where you have no idea what is going to happen on stage…When we started, we had no clue if it would work or not, and then it was voted Fort Lauderdale’s favorite event three years in a row. I mean, heck, that first year we had the world’s oldest showgirl—at 92—show up onstage and perform for the crowd, it was fun and hysterical.” The show, then held at the former Paradise Theater at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, sold out for four more consecutive years before Huelsman and DeCarlo moved to Orlando, where DeCarlo ran the local LGBT community center. He would go on to

play a high-profile role in that community’s response to the Pulse Nightclub shooting. “That’s part of the reason we came back,” reflected DeCarlo. “We did everything we could. We brought a community together, but we needed to get our lives back.” DeCarlo and Huelsman were eager to restart the show and other fundraising events after returning to South Florida. They recruited an all-star line-up, including the boys of Johnson’s and Le Boy, Angeliki Tasik, the Rainbow Circus, Funk & Flow Dance Studio, Kitty Meow, Dame Edna and Jennifer McClain. Many of the performers are veterans of the Hard Rock productions. “We always advertise 98 percent of what’s going to happen, but we hold back two percent as a surprise,” DeCarlo teased. “You may think it’s going to be a serious act, but then there’s some off-the-wall stuff that makes the audience wonder what the hell is going on! People literally come and have the time of their lives.” While audiences may need cold showers after the steamy surprises, when the curtain goes down, DeCarlo and Huelsman will get started on their next fundraisers. He promises to bring back his signature versions of “The Amazing Race,” drag and bed races in the coming months and all will again benefit local nonprofits.

“Broward Bares It!” will be presented on Thursday, Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. at the Venue, 2345 Wilton Dr. in Wilton Manors. Tickets start at $40 at BrowardBares.com.

Gay Porn Star Pleads Guilty to Filming Threesome Scene on London Underground Train

A

British gay adult film star has pleaded guilty to the charge of outraging public decency after filming a porn scene on a London Underground train - allegedly having a threesome in front of other passengers. “Complete on live sex at front of general public on subway train!” the description reads for the video, which can still be found online. George Mason, whose gay porn name is “Hung Young Brit,” and his boyfriend Nicholas Mullan, 24, recorded the video Feb. 19 of last year. The third man involved in the video had a pixelated face, and police have been unable to identify him. “When I think of other gay guys fetishising me, I feel empowered by that,” Mason previously said on his preferred genre to produce, the increasingly hard-to-find “chav” porn, according to BBC. “Chav” is a derogatory word in Great Britain used to demean the working class or poor people. “This is a case of outraging public decency on a London Underground train,” prosecutor Victoria Murphy outlined in court. The video shows the act taking place on the Northern Line between Leicester Square and London Waterloo. “It showed full sex, oral sex and masturbation in the presence of the travelling members of the public,” Murphy went on to say, according to The Sun. The prosecutor explained that a man, who is gay, saw the porn video online and

reported it to the police because he thought it “overstepped the mark and was morally unacceptable.” In England and Wales the charge of outraging public decency is punishable with an unlimited prison sentence or unlimited fine, under the criminal law offence, according to Pink News. Mason and Mullan are to appear again at Westminster Magistrates Court on Feb. 1 for sentencing.
