Scientists: Revolutionary War general was most likely intersex

Ariana Grande’s new song called “Monopoly” features lyrics implying she likes both men and women, and when fans started to question her sexuality, Grande took to Twitter and said that that she prefers not to label herself as bisexual, according to Newsweek. She has also been accused by some fans of “queerbaiting,” or hinting at being queer to attract an

LGBT audience. This is why they asked her to clarify whether she was bisexual. “I haven’t before and still don’t feel the need to now which is okay,” Grande tweeted, according to Newsweek. “Monopoly” features bisexual artist Daniella Monet singing the same lyric as Grande: “I like women and men.”

Revolutionary War general Casimir Pulaski’s remains were discovered and tested, but scientists were confused when the DNA came back indicating Pulaski didn’t have male or female binary genitals. Researchers suggest that although Pulaski lived and identified as a man, he was likely born intersex, according to the New York Times. The discovery has prompted activists to use Pulaski as an example of what can happen when

intersex lives and bodies aren’t tampered with at birth. “What’s happening today is so wrong,” Kimberly Zieselman, executive director of interACT, said. “You are erasing people like this person who went on, untouched, to be a war hero.” The findings were detailed in a documentary called, “The General Was Female?” which aired on the Smithsonian Channel on April 8.

Attack on transgender woman caught on video in Paris

Footage of the attack in Paris. Photo via SOS Homophobie.

A 31-year-old transgender woman named Julia was attacked in Paris by several men while trying to get on the metro, and it was caught on video. The video has sparked some activists to speak against the transphobic attitudes in Paris, according to the New York Times. Julia referenced these attitudes, saying this wasn’t the first time she was discriminated against for being transgender, but it was the

first time she was a victim of physical assault. “One of them looked at me and said, ‘You’re a man,’” she said, according to the Times. “He did not want to allow me to pass.” Julia didn’t want to speak out against the attackers at first, but after receiving support on social media, she says it has helped her to raise awareness for transgender issues in France.

Rights groups ask Pope Francis to help decriminalize gay sex

Brunei passes anti-gay laws, activists petition Australia to ban its airline

At a meeting in the Vatican last Friday, rights groups asked for the Pope’s help in decriminalizing homosexuality. About 50 people met with Pope Francis’ secretary of state, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, to discuss the human rights violations they found in the Caribbean, according to CNN. Parolin said he would pass the information along to the Pope. The representatives called on the Church to “work for the decriminalization of homosexuality and for the abolition of all forms of punishment for consented intimate sexual acts between adults,” and for all states “to declare illegal the application of the so-called conversion ‘cure’ therapies,” CNN reported. In the past, the Catholic Church

has upheld that people would not be discriminated against based on their sexuality.

After recent Brunei laws were set in place, making homosexuality punishable by death, there has been a public outcry to boycott Brunei-owned companies, including its national airline. Brunei is a nation found on the island Borneo in southeast Asia. Activists are petitioning the Australian government to ban Royal Brunei Airlines from landing in Australia, as this could bring harm to the LGBT community, according to SBS News. If someone in Brunei is found to be gay, they could be stoned to death. “The last thing you expect to happen if you board a flight from Australia - as a law-abiding citizen - is to run the real risk of falling victim to a shocking law that could potentially see you jailed,

or even executed,” the petition reads, according to SBS. The petition has so far been signed by 13,000 people.

Chinese company may sell Grindr over personal data issues

Cayman Islands to appeal ruling legalizing same-sex marriage

Beijing Kunlun Tech Co., Ltd., the owners of Grindr, discussed with the U.S. government whether they should sell the popular gay dating app. This comes after the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), a panel that recognizes security risks, notified the owners of their concerns about potential data issues with the app, according to Reuters. Grindr holds personal information such as addresses, messages, and even users’ HIV status. “We are in talks with CFIUS at the moment. We have not reached any agreement with CFIUS as of the day of the announcement. We will disclose any future development,” Kunlun said in a brief filing with the Chinese Securities Regulatory Commission.

Kunlun took over Grindr in 2016, and is considering an auction process, thought they haven’t made a decision yet.

The Cayman Islands recently legalized gay marriage, but the government has called to appeal this ruling, leading rights groups to protest. And they aren’t the only ones who are unhappy. The British government is displeased with the decision to appeal the ruling as well, according to Cayman 27 News. Colours Cayman, an LGBT rights group, staged a demonstration following the decision. “No matter what push back we get we will keep fighting for our rights, keep fighting for our visibility and representation, everything else that everyone else enjoys and takes advantage off or maybe takes for granted,” said Billie Bryan, president of Colours Cayman, according to Cayman 27 News.

The Cayman legislators are still debating on the motion to appeal.

HUD Won’t Issue LGBT Guidance

Because ‘You Would Dislike’ It Chris Johnson

ore than two years after the Trump administration withdrew federal guidance on rules barring anti-LGBT discrimination in homeless shelters, Secretary of Housing & Urban Development Ben Carson said Wednesday his department won’t reissue the documents because LGBT rights supporters “would probably dislike” what it says.

Carson made the remarks Wednesday Carson’s assertion that the underlying rule before the House Appropriations “obliterated” the guidance. you with considerably more freedom.” The underlying rule was based on language under federal law barring discrimination on the basis of “sex.” The Obama administration interpreted that language to apply cases of sexual-orientation and anti-transgender discrimination. But the legal view of the Trump administration is that laws banning discrimination on the basis of “sex” should be more narrowly construed and not apply to cases of anti-LGBT discrimination. As such, any guidance from Carson at HUD would likely reflect that view — and inspire objections from LGBT rights supporters who would say the guidance doesn’t fully cover transgender people. Flustered, Quigley asked Carson to confirm to issuing no guidance would actually provide greater protections for LGBT homeless people. “I’m suggesting that you might not like the sub-regulatory guidance that was put up,” Carson replied. Quigley insisted on knowing why, adding, “I’m a glutton for punishment, sir.”

“Because you probably wouldn’t agree with it,” Carson said. Quigley retorted: “Because it goes along with allowing people to discriminate against LGBTQ youth?” “The rules that are there allow people to have a non-discriminatory atmosphere and that’s what we are trying to achieve,” Carson said. That didn’t jive with Quigley, who again asked if HUD wants a non-discriminatory atmosphere, why not create guidance establishing that. “The rules already say that,” Carson replied. Quigley, recognizing the two were “go[ing] around and around,” made a final attempt to ask about the guidance. “If you have a rule that tells you what to do, you don’t need more guidance on that,” Quigley said. Quigley was clearly unhappy with the exchange after it concluded. “We are all now more stupid than we were when we came in the room today,” Quigley said.

Chicago Elects First Out Lesbian, Black Mayor Chris Johnson

T

he run-off election Tuesday night in Chicago resulted in a historic victory for Lori Lightfoot, who became the first out lesbian and black woman elected mayor of the city. The Associated Press called the race for Lightfoot, who was running against Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, at 8 p.m. local time. According to early results, Lightfoot claimed 74.2 percent of the vote compared to the 25.8 percent won by Preckwinkle. Lightfoot’s victory will make Chicago the largest city in the United States with an openly gay mayor. Previously, that distinction was held by Houston, where Annise Parker served as mayor from 2010 to 2016. Parker, who’s now executive director of the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund, was on the ground in Chicago and commended Lightfoot in a statement. “A Black lesbian taking power in the nation’s third-largest city is a historic moment for so many communities that are too often ignored in American politics,” Parker said. “Chicago’s enormous influence on the national dialogue provides a platform for Lori to promote more inclusive solutions

to the challenges facing our cities and nation – and to be a credible messenger as well. Lori will certainly remain focused on the issues facing Chicago. But as the highest-ranking LGBTQ person ever elected mayor of an American city – a title she takes from me – she is also now a key leader in the movement to build LGBTQ political power nationwide.” Also commending Lightfoot was Democratic National Committee Chair Tom Perez, who said her victory extends the treads of milestone victories after the 2018 election. “As the first openly LGBTQ woman of color to be elected mayor in any of America’s 100 largest cities and the first black woman to serve as mayor of Chicago, Lightfoot is an inspiration to thousands of LGBTQ people of color who have a new role model in elected office,” Perez said. Two other lesbian candidates — Satya Rhodes-Conway in Madison, Wisconsin, and Jolie Justus in Kansas City — were running for the offices of mayor elsewhere in the country. Both won their races. Justus will now face Quinton Lucas in the June general election. Rhodes-Conway ousted longtime Mayor Paul Soglin in another landslide to become Madison’s first openly gay mayor.

Lightfoot’s victory will make Chicago the largest city in the United States with an openly gay mayor.

Sea Plane Shirts Makes Crash Landing in Old Town John Porter

GIFT CERTIFICATES AVAILABLE

chuyler Brown, the founder and innovator of “Sea Plane Shirts” is touching down with a splash in Old Town with the third retail installment of the fun and inclusive shirt line Brown has been curating from his six person studio in Philadelphia since 2011. Following retail success in LGBT hot beds Palm Springs and Provincetown, Schuyler is now bringing his line of shirts to iconic Duval Street in downtown Key West. Shenanigans abound in this vibrant shop with a weekly ‘Shirtshow Party’ that’s part retail shop, part lounge; featuring an eclectic mix of music, local producers and plenty of mannequins donned in fun shirts with funky names like “Canary Coalmine and Whirly Wild World” donned on pant less mannequins. A true tongue-in-cheek approach to unique and outrageous attire, founder Brown leans into the eccentric patterns and

colors his brand is becoming known for. Beyond the bright colors and outrageous patterns, ‘Sea Plane Shirts’ is an innovative brand that used technology to build a brand with a small team who focused on smart sourcing to create designs that are as affordable as they are engaging. Every design is made from small lots of quality materials which are curated using Schuyler’s discerning eye for originality. The founders’ journey to shirt success has been anything but ordinary. The grandson of a North Carolina textile manufacturer, Brown collected an MBA from UC Berkley and worked in Paris, New York and San Francisco before launching Sea Plane Shirts in 2011. Schuyler carries his commitment to inclusion and equality saying, “When you see our shirts, you know intuitively ours is an inclusive message.” It is this dedication to inclusiveness which drives the brands growth and engages its customers.

Miami Beach Pride

Surprises and Delights Attendees Tucker Berardi

“T

here’s just a burst of color,” Christopher Loader, a London native visiting Miami said at the conclusion of this year’s Miami Beach Pride parade. “Everyone is super, super happy, it’s a big wedding and everyone is getting married.” There was plenty of love throughout the week’s Pride festivities — and certainly plenty of color. Pride weekend in Miami Beach was jam packed with cultural events, concerts, shows and plenty of parties. “I’ve never been here before, it’s a lot more fun than the other Prides I’ve been to, it’s a lot more lively, more diverse, I’m definitely coming again,” said Pride festival attendee Kimberly Guice, a medical student visiting Miami before moving to Texas. Founded 10 years ago in 2009, the first festival and parade drew 15,000 spectators. Last year over 145,000 people were in attendance, and the festivities have grown to a global event with A-list celebrities such as last year’s Grand Marshal Gus Kenworthy, Betty Who, Bebe Rexha, Adam Lambert, Ross Mathews, Mario Lopez and more. Judy and Dennis Shepard, parents of Matthew Shepard and founders of the Matthew Shepard foundation were

this year’s ally grand marshals. It’s been 20 years since the murder of their son at the University of Wyoming. The foundation works to erase hate crimes and foster understanding, compassion and acceptance of the LGBT community. “We are thrilled and honored to be a part of Miami Beach Pride,” Jason Marsden, executive director of the Matthew Shepard Foundation said. “We hope that by representing our foundation and reminding people of Matt, we can encourage both those affected by hate crimes and law enforcement to step up, connect, and do a better job for [the] LGBTQ+ community of Miami Beach.” This year’s advocate grand marshal was Detective Juan F. Sanchez, an openly gay police officer and member of the Miami Beach Police Department since November 1987. In 2010 Sanchez was appointed to serve as the department’s LGBT liaison — a position he held until his retirement last month. “I’ve been involved with Miami Beach Pride from year one, and it’s been incredible to see what it’s grown into,” Sanchez said. “The first year I was involved, I started by providing security for the event and never once did I think I would be a marshal for the parade. It’s very humbling and a huge honor.”

The grand marshals marched alongside more than 70 parade groups, 35 floats and over 3,000 participants. Local groups like Gay Vista Social Club and Equality Florida marched in the pride and corporations like T-Mobile and Starbucks showcased large floats and showered the crowd with branded rainbow swag. “My favorite part about Pride is the fact that you can be yourself,” said Jeff Perla, influencer behind The Travelin Bum Instagram said. “I feel like it’s a time where everybody can let loose and enjoy each other’s company and I think a lot of people don’t like to go to bars or clubs, but Pride brings the whole community together once a year and that’s really nice to see.” On Pride grounds, two stages were bridged by rows of tents where Pride-goers could shop, learn, take pictures, get tested and buy drinks. This year’s festival had two VIP tents, one near either stage where a rotation of DJs, drag performances, competitions and talks kept the party going on both ends of the festival. “I came to Pride because I want to see people in their natural skins, I wanted to see what they were like when people weren’t just pressuring them to fit the norms,” Maria Sanchez, a Miami native said. “This is my first time to any Pride, but it won’t be the last.”

The “Our Champions” theme honors eight key, influential advocates and activists in the nearly four-decade fight against HIV and AIDS and/or in AHF’s own history. The activists are honored side by side with their own colorful animated portrait. “AHF’s hope is to catch the eyes of parade-goers, reminding them of the brave human beings who helped change our world,” stated Michael Weinstein, the president of AHF. The activists include Arthur Ashe, Archbishop Carl Bean, Chris Brownlie, Princess Diana, Larry Kramer, Connie Norman, Elizabeth Taylor and Miami’s own Pedro Zamora. Zamora, who appeared on MTV’s “Real World: San Francisco,” was one of the first openly gay men with AIDS in popular media. He made TV history by exchanging vows with another man on national TV. O

n March 28 Maltz Jupiter Theatre raised the curtain on its final production of the season with a block buster production of “West Side Story.” “There’s not an empty seat in the house,” said Producing Artistic Director/Chief Executive Andrew Kato when addressing the audience before the show began. “And it looks like we might sell out the remainder of the run.” The production runs through April 14. Tickets start at $60. For tickets and showtimes call 561-575-2223 or visit JupiterTheatre.org. Sitting there mesmerized by what was taking place on stage I could almost feel the subway rumble under my feet and catch a whiff of that inimitable New York City street-level aroma. That’s how close for me the Maltz is to Broadway quality and this production of the award-winning classic, “West Side Story,” pushes them over the top. It is nonstop superlatives from start to finish. Director Marcos Santana with choreographer Al Blackstone and music director Andrew David Sotomayor pulled together a cast of 28 triple threat (singer/dancer/actor) performers, with breathtaking choreography and eyepopping staging, lighting, costumes and direction, not to mention incredible singing

“The musical has been taking the world by storm for decades, and for good reason; its story and music remain more powerful and poignant than ever.” - Andrew Kato

and a 12-piece orchestra supporting it all. Readers may recall the leadership trio’s work from last season’s criticallyacclaimed production of “Disney Newsies The Musical.” Also, Santana choreographed the Theatre’s hit production of “Kiss Me, Kate” in 2016. The musical’s classic score includes American musical theater classics including “Tonight,” “Something’s Coming,” “America,” “I Feel Pretty” “Somewhere” and, of course, “Maria.” “West Side Story opened in 1957 with book by Arthur Laurents, music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. The Musical was influenced by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and follows the story of Tony (Jim Schubin) and Maria (Evy Ortiz) two young lovers - she Puerto Rican and he American. They are caught between warring street gangs, the American Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks. They fight to find a place for themselves in a violent world, only to discover that even love can end in tragedy.” “West Side Story has long been considered one of the greatest love stories of all time, and we are proud to be bringing

this phenomenal musical to life on the Maltz Jupiter Theatre’s stage,” Kato said. “The musical has been taking the world by storm for decades, and for good reason; its story and music remain more powerful and poignant than ever.” In his column in Footlights, Kato talks about the Maltz production being a reimagining through the eyes of Santana, Blackstone and Sotomayor. An interview with Santana describes his use of a prelude and postlude to imagine Maria’s life after Tony. Take a few minutes to read the interview before the show begins to understand what he means. With so much happening on the stage it’s hard to keep up. That said, there were a few things that resonated a little more for me than others. Schubin and Ortiz singing “Tonight” was exquisite. Their voices played off each other like layers of silk in a breeze. Elisa Galindez (Rosalia) brought tears to my eyes with her rendition of “Somewhere” and Michelle Alves (Anita) commanded my attention whenever she was on stage although I had to look away during the “Taunting Scene.”

Maltz Jupiter Theatre is located at 1001 Indiantown Road – due east from I-95.

Gay Polo Tournament

news

P

alm Beach County celebrated another successful LGBT event last weekend with the 10th annual Land Rover International Gay Polo Tournament, hosted by the Gay Polo League (GPL). The lavish event took place in Wellington April 4-7 at the Land Rover Palm Beach International Polo Club, America’s only high goal polo venue. The tournament was named LGBTQ Sporting Event of the Year by Connect Sports in 2017. This year’s performance featured six teams battling it out on the field, some from Palm Beach County and some from out of state. The GPL is the only LGBT polo league in the world. GPL has created an international network of LGBT polo players and enthusiasts in 13 countries. Known for its diversity, the league embraces a cross section of ages, abilities, professions, and riding experience. “Our platform is using our tournaments and our events to give back to LGBT charities that we partner with or, that we feel are doing something important for the LGBT community,” said GPL president and founder Chip McKenney, who also played on the Goshen Hill team. GPL hosted events and activities the entire weekend, like Wigstock, a cocktail party that benefitted an LGBT elder advocacy group called SAGE. In the past, proceeds have gone to Compass Community Center, among other organizations.

“The GPL is an awesome, supportive group for the LGBT community and allies alike — we cater to everybody and we have a fabulous time,” said Goshen Hill player Peter Secor. “I fly down a couple of times during the winter to play at Palm City Polo Club in Boynton Beach.” The tailgate competition before the tournament on Saturday was a highlight for many attendees. CJR Fine Arts’ tent presented a mini gallery that featured several original pieces, and Little Moir’s food truck from Jupiter boasted their creative Wizard of Oz display made in partnership with Land Rover. Their display featured a painted yellow brick road and Dorothy also made special appearance, along with a mini Toto. Celebrity Cruises, the organization that sponsored the tailgate competition, shocked polo fans as they ushered them into their air-conditioned tent. “If you’re going to do a tent, you’ve got to do it right,” said Yolanda Sheppard of Celebrity Cruises. This year’s tailgate was filled with

different colorful themes, like flamingos, butterflies, and the ocean. “Last year was my first time coming,” stated West Palm-native and tailgater Weldon Mumford. “We did a floral theme last year; this year we wanted to pay homage to Wakanda, so we wore African attire.” Commemorating 10 years was an important milestone for GPL. It was made possible by several sponsors including Land Rover, Discover the Palm Beaches, Palm Beach County Sports Commission, and McKenney Media. Cherry Knoll Farms sponsored the VIP tent which featured table side service throughout the day with a full open bar, a gourmet lunch buffet catered by the International Polo Club Palm Beach, and more. “It has been a real pleasure to watch this event grow over the years,” McKenney said. “What particularly interests me is that the event is maturing into a more elegant event. People come to this event happy and they leave happier. To me that’s a signal that we are doing our job.”

Compass Community Center is introducing Dining Out For Life (DOFL) to Palm Beach County this year, so you can do just that on April 30. DOFL has conducted its events in more than 50 cities around the world and has raised over $4 million for HIV services each year. This is Compass’ first year participating in the event, which creates an easy way for people to make a positive impact for those living in their own community who are affected by HIV/AIDS, especially since South Florida continues to have the highest rate of new HIV diagnoses in the country. Compass joins hundreds of other organizations across the nation that have partnered with Dining Out For Life to make an impact in their local communities. DOFL events make it simple to help. All you have to do is dine at a participating restaurant like you always do, and that’s it; the restaurants donate to Compass at the end of the day. “You can make a meal meaningful by dining out for life,” said Julie Seaver, Compass’ executive director. “We are so grateful for our restaurants stepping up and donating generously to make a difference in the lives of people living with HIV.” This year, participating restaurants include Don Ramon Restaurante Cubano & Social Club, Kapow Noodles and Cocktails (Clematis Street), DADA in Delray Beach, Hullabaloo WPB, Howley’s WPB and Java Juice Bar and Café @Studio 205 in Lake Worth.

FAITH & PRIDE spirituality we must talk with our enemies,

Not Our Friends Rabbi Noah Kitty

Congregation Etz Chaim

I

am writing this piece from Washington, DC, at the annual AIPAC Policy Affairs conference. AIPAC stands for American-Israel Policy Affairs Committee, and exists to maintain the positive relationship between the US and Israel. Since it was founded in 1963 AIPAC has been committed to bipartisan cooperation between Republicans and Democrats, which can be seen in the many Democrats and Republicans who share the stage with each other. In fact, tomorrow Nancy Pelosi will share the stage with Mitch McConnell, and I fully expect that the world will continue spinning on its axis. In recent years many in progressive political communities have accused AIPAC of being a mouthpiece for repressive policies in Israel, and have extended what could have been a difference in a political opinion to all Jews everywhere. Jews have been attacked at the Dyke March, the Slut Walk, the Women’s March, Black Lives Matter, and Creating Change. Literally, physically attacked for publicly wearing a Jewish star. I believe much of the rise of this antisemitic behavior has to do with the simultaneous rise of vicious and malicious sectarian attitudes that is pushing us to takes sides in an increasingly complex world. It works like this: someone proposes an issue, whether for or against abortion, or LGBT rights, or restoring voting rights to former felons, or making marijuana legal. They then set up this issue as a litmus test to decide if you are a moral or immoral person based on this single issue. It does not matter if you otherwise volunteer at a shelter, or a library, or created a program to increase literacy skills for children. If you do not agree with them, you are relegated to the status of a repressor, removed from the class of people they consider humane, and can be treated with impunity. As was pointed out by all the speakers at the conference, we have lost respect for each

other as human beings with the right to have differing opinions. We have determined that whoever disagrees with us is not simply wrong, but is immoral and evil and should be exterminated. In the current way of the world this attitude is held equally by those on the farther ends of the Left and the Right. Those of us working for a secure, civil, and responsive society based on fairness and equally do so in order to improve our world. This cannot happen when we continually call each other out for real or imagined wrongs, by denying their very humanity, or by putting people into classes of worthy or unworthy. This is not the way of peace. I’ve heard it said that in order to create peace we need to talk with our enemies, not our friends. In fact, not everyone you make your enemy is really your enemy. It is possible that they agree with your principle, be it increasing literacy or decreasing poverty or homelessness, but disagree with your method of addressing it. You’ll only know that if you talk to them, as another worthy human being who is also trying to improve the world. Back in the 1970’s a good friend of mine started a program she called, “Take a Lesbian to Lunch.” She believed then, as I do now, that peace and understanding arise when we relate to another person as a human being, rather as a political entity. In this scenario, “The Republican” becomes Pat, and “The Liberal” becomes Taylor, both just another person trying to make their own way in the world with whom you may actually share many interests. In the end you may still not like them, but the tenor of your conversation about them will hopefully be mediated by the points of agreement you do have together, resulting in the lessening of the vicious vituperative attacks upon each other. So if you think you might learn something by having lunch with a lesbian Zionist Rabbi, give me a call. Maybe we can increase the peace over a nice bowl of soup.

Laughter Gets Us Through It All Brian McNaught

Ray, Brian McNaught’s partner. Photo credit: Brian McNaught.

R

ay has a wonderful laugh. He’s the guy you’re glad is in the theater audience watching a funny play or film. It’s hysterical when he’s on the plane with ear phones listening to a movie. His laugh creates big smiles and chuckles for several rows. For fortythree years, his laughter has lifted my heart, and for fortythree years, it’s been a primary objective of mine, no matter what the circumstances, to make him laugh. Although, we’ve learned, that making someone laugh who has just had a hernia operation is not necessarily a kindness. I love to make Ray laugh. I can be pretty funny, and outrageous, and he loves my sense of humor. So, every day, from the moment we kiss “good morning,” to the moment we kiss “good night,” if a situation arises that strikes me as funny, I share it with Ray, sometimes with a quip, sometimes with the voices of different characters, sometimes dancing in front of the television, but, most often teasing him in front of others. He looks forward to it. The dogs have done their part too, Jeremy, Brit, and Lincoln. The Labradoodle knows he’s funny when he runs around the house with my oh-so-sexy underwear in his mouth, tail wagging, as he waits to be chased. Everyone smiles when Lincoln rides around with me in the passenger seat of the old, red Mercedes convertible. Laughter is great medicine for the body and the soul. It releases endorphins that actually help fight disease. Some groups of people find it easy to see the humor in life. The Irish and Jews can be non-stop hysterical. If you’re in the hospital, and they ask you your faith, say “Jewish.” The rabbi will make you laugh. It heartens me of late to watch my husband begin to laugh on his own more easily, and more often. For many years, his mood has been heavier, less joyful, because of financial stress. We’re rich by all measures, but our financial stability has been teetering since we loaned money to friends. Even that drama is something we can laugh about, but the joke takes a long set up. Ray’s lightened mood is the direct result of us, for the first time, working as a team to become more financially stable. That has included selling one home, and putting the other on the market. We’ve also sold most of our art and high end antiques. When the Fort Lauderdale house sells, we’ll move into one smaller, and more suited to our age and needs. But please don’t feel badly. We’re actually happy, and excited about it. And, I’ve saved enough lifelong “treasures” that we won’t feel wanting. Financial security has been my soulmate’s primary household focus. He has kept the finances as his sole domain. His goal in our marriage is to have me be happy. I have the same goal as him, having me be happy.

It heartens me of late to watch my husband begin to laugh on his own more easily, and more often.

30

4 .10.2019

Kidding. My goal is having Ray be happy, but we each go about it differently. Anything I say in passing becomes his immediate objective to buy, and make real. Despite my constant assurance that I am happy, and need nothing, he nevertheless zeroes in on things he thinks will make me feel special and loved. For the past ten years, he has carried the weight of financial insecurity on his own back in shame, and in disappointment in himself. What changed for him was the realization that I was stepping in to make the decisions he knew needed to be made. A burden shared is a burden halved. My primary objective in our marriage is to know that the love of my life will die with no regrets, a man fully fulfilled, and free from worry. With the time that has been made available with no work-related traveling, I’m focusing more and more attention on our final years together. I want Ray away from the desk where he has balanced credit card debt, paid bills, and worried about whether we’d have enough money to make it to the end. We will. Now, it’s time to reconnect, play, and be light hearted.

Given the constant severe pain my spouse is in, as a result of back problems, and too much surgery, it’s a marvel to me that he smiles and laughs as much as he does. Every time he looks at me, he smiles. And what a smile he has. It lights the room, and my soul. All of us, regardless of our circumstances, need to smile and laugh more often. Even if we force ourselves to smile, it lifts our mood, and changes our focus. Our spouses want us to laugh, as do the people checking us out of the doctor’s office or grocery store. Laughter is a common denominator that eliminates consciousness of class or power. Have you ever laughed with a sick friend, or one who has just buried a loved one? They’re grateful for the release from their prison of dread. They’re exhausted by their pain and sorrow, and want to feel normal again, if even for just a brief moment. The same is true with those we love the most. They want to laugh, to smile, to feel light and joyful. If you feel that you have no sense of humor, rent a funny movie, watch “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” and make friends with people who make you laugh. I may get a business card made up that says, “If You’re Cryin,’ Call Brian,”which should never get mixed in with my end-of-life spiritual doula cards, “If You’re Dyin’, Call Brian.”

Brian McNaught has been a leading educator on LGBTQ issues globally since 1974. He has made his many books and DVDs available for free at Brian-McNaught.com. The New York Times named him “The Godfather of gay diversity training.”

from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Choose to dine in the light and airy dining room, or al fresco, on the beachfront terrace. Seafood figures prominently on the menu, with raw options ranging from freshly shucked oysters, ceviche or Little Neck clams. Shared options include The Surfboard-seared scallops, Key West shrimp, mussels, clams and oysters accompanied by herb garlic butter and charred scallion or creamy Blue Crab & Artichoke Dip with grilled sourdough. Eggs can be enjoyed a variety of ways: from huevos rancheros to charcoal baked eggs or a selection of Benedicts – served with avocado, smoked salmon, or prosciutto, with an indulgent option to add a lump crab fondue. Seafood toasts begin with avocado toast with heirloom tomatoes and arugula and can be topped with a choice of Maine lobster, blue lump crab, smoked salmon or shrimp. Double Burgers and steaks are available for the meat and potatoes fan.

Pelican Landing

2301 SE 17th St., Fort Lauderdale 954-524-3444 Pelican-Landing.com Just because there are some new brunch options, that doesn’t mean we have to abandon some tried and true favorites. You can’t beat the setting of Pelican Landing, located in the Marina of Pier 66. The a la carte menu is precise and focused. Check out the restaurant’s signature dish, SOFLO Chilaquiles, featuring fried plantains, salsa verde, queso fresco and scrambled eggs served with chipotle crema. Many of the other dishes on the menu share the Latin American vibe, including huevos rancheros, ropa vieja (brilliantly paired with poached eggs), a flaky buttermilk biscuit with thin layers of scrambled egg on the jalapeño biscuit egg sandwich accompanied by a refreshing salad topped with fresh mango, and crunch mini-crab cakes with perfectly prepared sweet potato fries.

lifestyle food More fried goodness comes courtesy of the crunchy conch fritters. For the gringos there is more traditional fare; shrimp with poached eggs, vanilla brioche French toast and steak and eggs. Those emphasizing a healthy diet will appreciate the quinoa and black bean hash (served with scrambled egg whites and avocado), and the coconut-chia seed pudding parfait. Treat yourself to freshly-made cronuts (doughnuts made with croissant dough) for dessert. It should be noted that Pelican Landing is not handicapped accessible, but an upcoming renovation will move the dining area to the main level, which will rectify that situation.

Shooters Waterfront 3033 NE 32nd Ave., Fort Lauderdale 954-566-2855 ShootersWaterFront.com

Brunch is all about options and at Shooters you can choose from a la carte offerings or head to the buffet. There’s none of that, “everyone at the table has to choose the same” nonsense. If you just want a salad and your friends want to pig out that’s fine with the restaurant’s management. The menu features dishes such as crab cake eggs Benedict, challah bread French toast, and the Power House (an egg white omelet with spinach, feta, tomato, cheddar, and pico de gallo). The all-you-can-eat $40 brunch buffet strains

the imagination as much as the waistline. It includes a carving station, custom omelet station, waffles, sushi, bagels, pastries and salads. Enjoy a bottomless mimosa or bloody Mary for $20. Shooters offers brunch Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and there is free yoga every Saturday at 8:30 a.m. before brunch.

Pelican Grand Beach Resort. 2000 N. Ocean Blvd., Fort Lauderdale 954-556-7667 PelicanBeach.com

A buffet and the chance to eat with your toes in the sand? Yes, please! At Pelican Grand’s Ocean 2000 the restaurant’s veranda opens straight onto the beach, so brunch is like a picnic without all that pesky sand in your food. Served Sundays from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., the extravagant buffet is $60 per person. It’s a bit steep, but one look at seafood tower and you’ll know you’re getting your money’s worth. There are also meat carving stations, made-to-order waffles and omelets, build-your-own pasta bowls and a dessert table. The first Sunday of each month the dessert table looks like something out of Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory. The meal includes a choice of traditional or pineapple and cranberry mimosa, bloody Mary, or a Kir Royale.

OUTshine Film Festival Turns 21 in Miami Beach J.W. Arnold

O

UTshine Film Festival, the largest LGBT festival in the Southeast, celebrates its 21st anniversary this year in Miami with an expanded 11-day schedule, April 18 – 28, featuring more than 85 indie, foreign and short films. Executive Director Victor Gimenez said, “This year’s lineup is especially exciting, as we have a large percentage of women filmmakers participating, as well as films from a wider range of countries and continents, including Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, and the U.K.” The festival kicks off on Thursday, April 18 with “Tell it to the Bees,” starring Academy Award winner Anna Paquin, at the Black Archives Historic Lyric Theater Cultural Arts Complex in Overtown. Afterwards, the opening night party will feature culinary demonstrations by local celebrity chefs. In addition to the films, talkback sessions with filmmakers and popular afterparties, OUTshine will host a “Let’s Stop HIV Together” event on Saturday, April 27, featuring short documentary films from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Alex McFry, a Florida State University student — both sharing the personal stories of people from all walks of life living with HIV. The event will also be co-produced by two local organizations, Latinos Salud and University of Miami Health System. “Where Justice Ends,” a documentary by South Florida filmmaker George Zuber, will receive its world premiere on Saturday, April 27 at 2:30 p.m. Zuber’s film chronicles the intersection

of two important and timely social justice issues: the U.S. criminal justice system and the treatment of the transgender community in America. One in six transgender persons is likely to be incarcerated at some point in their lives, including nearly half of black transgender people. “Where Justice Ends” examines how high unemployment, family rejection and homelessness contribute to these staggering rates of incarceration and how the cycle can be halted. “During the course of completing my prior film, ‘Just Gender,’ I heard, again and again, bits and pieces of stories describing the experiences of transgender people at all stages when they encountered the police, the courts and prison,” explained Zuber. “Neither those stories nor the frequent news reports prepared me for the actual conditions experienced by transgender people. This film offers a glimpse into those conditions and gives a voice to the individuals who experienced that treatment.” WWE wrestler Fred Rosser, who competed as Darren Young, will be presented with the festival’s Vanguard Award and a key to the city at the closing party on Sunday, April 28. Rosser, who used to live in Miami Beach, founded the #BlockTheHate social media campaign. “Being the first openly gay wrestler [in WWE], I’ve been able to encourage and inspire wrestling fans all over the world to chase their dreams. I’ve been able to show other LGBTQ athletes that they have a duty to instill confidence in the youth and to lead by example,” Rosser said.

The OUTshine Film Festival runs April 18 – 28 with most screenings at the Regal Cinemas South Beach, 1120 Lincoln Rd. in Miami Beach. A complete schedule and tickets can be found at OUTshineFilm.com. Watch SFGN next week for mini-reviews of several festival films.

‘Hell’s Belles’ Promises a Devilishly Funny Show J.W. Arnold

T

hree women, 20 roles and one smooth-talking devil all add up to one helluva good time in “Hell’s Belles,” the musical opening this weekend at Empire Stage in Fort Lauderdale. History’s most infamous women carry a tune…or an axe…or a grudge…in Hell’s “theater district,” where a show-bizloving devil emcees a never-ending revue featuring famous and infamous women from history. Janis Joplin celebrates sex, drugs, booze and rock ‘n roll before an epic showdown between Bette Davis and Joan Crawford. Then Princess Diana makes a surprise visit from Heaven, where she’s incredibly bored hanging out with Mother Theresa. “It’s all basically a satire on the social issues surrounding these women,” explained producer Eileen Weiss. “I mean, who decides whether they go to heaven and hell? Some of them are having the

time of their life while others desperately want to leave. It’s all about women’s rights and also gay and lesbian rights.” “Hell’s Belles,” with book and lyrics by Bryan D. Leys and music by Steve Liebman, was initially presented as a benefit performance at New York City’s Lesbian and Gay Community Services Center more than a decade ago. Weiss and her sister Sharon acquired the show in 2008 and produced additional runs at the Duplex, Wings Theatre, West End Theatre and Midtown Theatre. The Off-Broadway production ran at the Elektra Theatre in 2014. “Our goal was always to do regional productions or tour. The writer, Bryan, updates the script to fit the locale and the current political location—ironically, Donald Trump was always in the show. There always was a reference, it wasn’t added just for this production…and every time the material gets tighter. It’s very,

very funny,” she said. Liebman died a couple of years ago, Weiss reported, although the score for the show remains one of his most performed. For the South Florida premiere, Weiss tapped director Kevin Dean and music director Paul Tine for the 85-minute, one act production. For the first time, one of the belles will be played by a man, Trevor Peringer, who appeared as Ginger in the Empire Stage Production of “Gilligan’s Fire Island” three years ago. In addition to Peringer, who will be returning to Fort Lauderdale from San Diego, the other cast members include local actors Larry Buzzeo and Sharyn Peoples, and newcomer Lauren Tuma.

The cast of “Hell’s Belles,” opening this weekend at Empire Stage, includes (left to right): Sharyn Peoples, Trevor Peringer, Larry Buzzeo and Lauren Tuma. Photo credit: Tweiss Productions.

“Hell’s Belles” will be performed April 11 – May 5 at Empire Stage, 1140 N. Flagler Dr. in Fort Lauderdale. Tickets are $35 at EmpireStage.com.

Christianity And Queerness Meet In The

elcome to Queerly Digital, a regular column about LGBT cinema

“The Gospel Of Eureka,” a new documentary by Michael Palmieri and Donal Mosher, is the perfect antidote to the divisiveness being inflamed by the current administration. The film paints a lovely portrait of Eureka Springs, Arkansas, a Bible Belt town which is home to a thriving LGBT community, many of whom are devout Christians. Short and sweet, the film is narrated by transgender cabaret chanteuse Mx. Justin Vivian Bond. Looming over Eureka Springs, the first municipality in Arkansas to issue same sex marriage licenses, is Christ Of The Ozarks, the largest Jesus statue in North America. The town also hosts an annual Passion Play which attracts huge crowds each year. Only a stone’s throw away from the statue is a gay bar owned by a married gay couple who refer to their watering hole as “the hillbilly studio 54.” The bar features drag shows that are a little bit different than what viewers might expect: outrageously dressed queens lip sync to songs that have religious themes. (“You can’t pray the gay away, no matter what your preacher says.”) The residents of Eureka Springs are not what you’d normally find in the Bible Belt. Viewers will meet a devout trans woman who sees no disconnect between her faith and her transitioning. “God has no problem with me,” she says. “I see faith as a reason for who I am.” Other town residents include a gay pastor whose supportive straight son owns a Christian T-shirt shop, and a straight dad who teaches his children about tolerance. But not everyone in Eureka Springs is happy with the town’s diversity. As queers and supporters campaign for the passage of Non-Discrimination Ordinance 2223, which would offer legal protections to the town’s

LGBT population, one man expresses his extreme displeasure. “This town is getting too permissive,” he says. “And I don’t like it.” A big part of the film focuses on the elaborate Passion Play, which tells, in largerthan-life style, the story of Jesus Christ. Scenes of the Passion Play are juxtaposed with footage shot inside the gay bar, where people drink, dance, and applaud the drag performers. The filmmakers do not comment on the goings on in Eureka Springs, they merely present what is, reminding viewers that the town wasn’t always the peaceful and accepting hamlet that it now is. The Christ Of The Ozarks statue had been commissioned in 1966 by Gerald L. K. Smith, an extremist, anti-Semitic preacher whose rhetoric has since been rejected by the town. Eureka Springs now fully embraces its commitment to equality and fairness: NonDiscrimination Ordinance 2223 passes by a wide margin. So how did this Bible Belt community become so accepting and so diverse? That’s never explained, and no explanation is necessary. What the people of Eureka Springs eloquently illustrate is what the world could be like, if only we would let it be so. “The Gospel Of Eureka” is now available on DVD. 4.10.2019 •
