years as a funeral director before announcing that she was transitioning. She informed her boss in 2013 and two weeks later was fired. Her boss believed that “coming to work dressed as a woman was not going to be acceptable.” Stephens sued, arguing that she had been terminated on the basis of her transgender status. The cases are being closely watched by LGBT rights groups, which are seeking to broaden protections. The Trump administration, on the other hand, does not believe the law currently includes those protections. “Like other Americans, LGBTQ people want to make a living and provide for their families,” Masen Davis, CEO of Freedom for All Americans, a bipartisan campaign for LGBT rights, said in a statement Monday. “A win in these cases would improve the lives of millions of LGBTQ people and their families as well as send a message about the inherent importance of all of us being able to go to work, to live our everyday lives free from discrimination, and to have the means to take care of ourselves and our loved ones.”

major question in the lower courts for the past few years,” said Steve Vladeck, CNN Supreme Court analyst and professor at the University of Texas School of Law. “Today’s grants means not only that the Supreme Court is going to settle the matter, but that its answers are likely going to come right in the middle of the 2020 election season. And although the court had taken significant steps to protect against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, that was when Anthony Kennedy was still the court’s swing vote.” These cases will become a major test for the court’s newly solidified conservative majority. All eyes will be on Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Brett Kavanaugh as they wade through the facts of three cases with divergent backgrounds. Two of the cases, Bostock v. Clayton and Altitude v. Zarda, concern sexual discrimination, and a third, R.G. and G.R v. EEOC, targets gender identity. In that case, Aimee Stephens, formerly known as Anthony Stephens, worked for six

he Supreme Court agreed Monday to consider whether a federal employment discrimination law that bans discrimination based on sex also encompasses discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identification. Lower courts have split on the issue that is of critical importance to LGBT rights supporters who are seeking broadened protections. The Trump administration has said that Title VII of the Civil Rights Act does not provide such protections. The court will hear arguments on the cases next term. The justices were asked to hear three different petitions concerning whether Title VII of the Civil Rights Act that prohibits employment discrimination based on sex also encompasses discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. “Whether Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 bars employers from discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation and/or transgender status has been looming as a

Bisexual Bruneian man condemns anti-gay penal code

California bill banning surgeries on intersex children delayed

Sen. Scott Wiener with community members. Photo via Scott Wiener.

A self-proclaimed liberal Muslim man, who is also bisexual, has condemned Brunei’s new law — the death penalty for gay sex. The man, who the Washington Blade didn’t name, said the new laws are polarizing the country even further, with strict Muslims who support them, and people who are vehemently against them, according to the Blade. And he said those who support them don’t

know the consequences of what they’re supporting. “I don’t think they are fully aware of the political, socio-cultural and economic impacts these laws may present, or event worse, I don’t think they care,” he wrote. “As they are blinded and feel they will be protected by God for being a more pious nation.” Brunei’s new penal code was set in place in early April.

A bill that would ban unnecessary genital surgeries on intersex children has been shelved because doctors think medical decisions should be decided by parents. The California bill, introduced by Sen. Scott Wiener, would’ve required the intersex child to be old enough to consent to a medically unnecessary procedure, according to the LA Times. But doctors said the bill was too broad

and was trying to legislate medical decisions. “We put out ideas to address concerns raised by medical associations, but they have refused to negotiate other than to offer amendments that delete the bill,” Wiener said, according to the LA Times. “I’m committed to this bill. This is a civil rights issue for these children.” The bill will be voted on again in January 2020.

Transgender military ban goes into effect

Photo via ACLU.org

The Pentagon’s ban on admitting transgender people to the military went into effect last Friday, according to CNN. Though the ban doesn’t affect transgender troops currently in the military, it would block people diagnosed with gender dysphoria from joining, CNN reported. “It’s a bigoted policy. It has not one shred of evidence behind it,” Ray Mabus, a former secretary of the Navy, told CNN. “In fact, all the evidence goes the other

way. It goes against the basic American notion that it should be about what you can do and not who you are. ... To do this to patriots who are willing to serve -- not only willing, but eager to serve, who have raised their hands and said send me -weakens our democracy and seriously weakens our military.” Transgender people can only serve if their biological sex is the same as when they were born, according to CBS News.

At least 10 young gay men allegedly harassed by same German stalker

Fiji Prime Minister: I will never allow gay marriage

Max, a 20-year-old gay German student, has been harassed by the same man for three years. Max, whose last name was left out to protect the ongoing case, said the man was responsible for sending death threats, tormenting him on social media, and outing him to friends and family members, according to Buzzfeed News. And the District Attorney’s Office believes Max is one of at least 10 young gay men who have been harassed by the same stalker. “I am still angry that he outed me to my dad,” he said, according to Buzzfeed News. “I never had the chance to tell him about it myself.” The perpetrator was identified and arrested by police in 2016 after making a bomb threat. It still isn’t clear when

Max’s stalker will stand trial, the municipal court spokesperson told Buzzfeed.

Frank Bainimarama, prime minister of Fiji, said same-sex marriage is “rubbish,” in 2016. Then, last Sunday, Bainimarama said at a press conference that as long as he’s in office, he’ll never legalize gay sex because it’s against his Christian values, according to Pink News. He then apologized to the audience that the topic was even brought up. LGBT organizations in Fiji have condemned his statement. “The LGBTQI community is already marginalised within our society and these comments made by someone in authority, such as the Prime Minister, are extremely dangerous and only exacerbate the existing discrimination against members of the LGBTQI community,” Fiji NGO Coalition on

Human Rights chair Nalini Singh said, according to Pink News. Same-sex couples and parents currently have no protections under Fiji law, according to Pink News.

Luxembourg’s prime minister encourages Mexico to advance gay rights

Brunei says death penalty is meant for ‘prevention’ of gay sex

Xavier Bettel, Luxembourg’s gay prime minister, praised Mexico City for its human rights progress, but called on the rest of Mexico to advance women’s and LGBT rights. Bettel, one of the only openly gay world leaders, addressed the Mexican Senate, and rights groups are saying they’ve never heard such a pro-LGBT speech there, calling it historic, according to Reuters. But Bettel called on the rest of Mexico to catch up to its capital. “I know that Mexico - and I don’t say this just to please you Mr. President - is more advanced than other countries on all these issues,” Bettel told senators, according to Reuters. “[But] Mexico City doesn’t represent the whole country, of course. And there is still a lot of work to be done.”

Less than half of Mexico’s 32 states have legalized gay marriage, Reuters reported.

Brunei set new laws in place earlier this month, making gay sex punishable by death by stoning. After the United Nations called the laws “cruel and inhuman,” Brunei issued a response. According to BBC, Brunei’s minister of foreign affairs said in a statement that the laws are “focused more on prevention than punishment.” To be punished by death, at least two Muslim men would have to witness the sex act. This would make punishment rare, according to the statement. The criminalization of “adultery and sodomy is to safeguard the sanctity of family lineage and marriage of individual Muslims, particularly women,” the statement said. The statement also said Brunei does not criminalize a person based on their

sexual orientation, but right fterward, it said they will be convicted if a Muslim person commits sodomy.

Gay Ambassador Defends Pence Meanwhile, Buttigieg Heckled In Iowa

John McDonald

A

s former Vice President Joe Biden continues to weigh a 2020 run, the rest of the field is off to the races. President Donald Trump leads all candidates in terms of fundraising with over $97.8 million in the bank. U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont is second with $20.7 million followed by former Maryland Congressman John Delaney ($18.2 million), U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts ($16.4 million), U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris of California ($13.2 million), U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York ($12.6 million), former Texas Congressman Beto O’Rourke ($9.3 million), U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota ($8.8 million), U.S. Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey ($7.9 million) and South Bend, Indiana Mayor and gay candidate Pete Buttigieg rounds out the top 10 with $7.1 million. Buttigieg has stayed in the headlines for a tussle with Pence over Christianity. Richard Grenell, U.S. ambassador to Germany, inserted himself into the discussion, tweeting: “My friend was attacked. I’m defending my friend from a terrible & erroneous charge of homophobia. And I’m gay.” Grenell referenced a tweet from 2015 in which Pence claimed he would no longer eat at a restaurant where he witnessed the owner refusing to serve a gay couple. “The hate hoax being perpetrated on my friend @VP Mike Pence is sadly tied to a political fundraising strategy. Mayor Pete was silent for years – I’m outraged by his phony outrage,” Grenell tweeted April 18. Meanwhile, Buttigieg was heckled last week at campaign stops in Iowa. LGBTQ Nation reports Operation Rescue, a religious group, has been following the Buttigieg campaign and delivering anti-gay messages. “The good news is the condition of my soul is in the hands of God, but the Iowa caucuses are up to you,” Buttigieg reportedly told supporters in Des Moines. Doug Ambort, a retired arts administrator, hosted a “watch party” for Buttigieg’s official campaign announcement on April 14 in Portland, Oregon. Twenty-four people squeezed into Ambort’s tiny studio apartment on Portland’s upper west side. “I realized there is a candidate with a broad and deep set of leadership skills and experience,” said Ambort, who had previously organized on behalf of Sanders

Pete Buttigieg. Photo via Facebook.

and held a leadership role in the Monterey, California Democratic Party. Buttigieg, Ambort said, is a “man uniquely qualified to tackle existential problems facing humanity.” When asked if America was ready for a gay president, Ambort, a straight man, said sexual orientation does not matter. “This isn’t about identity politics anymore,” Ambort said, adding “I’ve seen a lot of candidates and this guy has the chops.” Elsewhere, fallout over the partial release of the Mueller report continues in Washington. Bill Weld, a Republican seeking his party’s presidential nomination, said he was “horrified” over the special counsel’s report. U.S. Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) said he was “sickened” by Trump’s behavior.

LGBT Field Notes: Florida Rep. Shevrin Jones is staying busy in Tallahassee. Jones led a bipartisan effort to pass needle exchange in the House. He released the following statement on the incident in Tamarac involving Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies and teenagers: “While BSO conducts its investigation into the brutal, excessive & unnecessary force used, it’s my hope that they will move swiftly to get to the bottom of it. If citizens are expected to exercise good judgment, the same standard has to be met by those who are sworn to protect us.” Elijah Manley, a queer activist, went one step further. Manley drew comparisons to the Parkland shooting, tweeting: “A white terrorist murders 17 people at a high school in Broward County w/ an AR-15, and he’s cuffed gently and escorted humanely. A black child in Broward gets sprayed & has his skull smashed into the concrete by two officers while posing no threat. Get the point?”

Toni Armstrong Jr. —

Still Having a BLAST James Madera

W

hile successfully advancing through a career as a special education teacher for 30 years, Toni Armstrong Jr. has her sights aimed high on another objective: activism.

Armstrong Jr. founded Bi, Lesbian, and Straight Together (BLAST) Women of the Palm Beaches, a social networking group that caters to women of all demographics within the LGBT community in 2008. The mission of the group is to build up the women’s community and to exchange resources with one another. The group is constantly planning events centered around LGBT activism and pride. “We now have 3,500 members and host more than 200 events per year,” Armstrong Jr. said. “I continue to produce house concerts, speakers, films, conferences, and concert events at Compass.” Armstrong Jr. relocated to Palm Beach County from Chicago in 2006. She started to lay the groundwork for her activism while she was still in Chicago by creating her own organization. “I established a business called Empty Closet Enterprises, which was the overarching business entity under which I published a lesbian feminist magazine,” Armstrong Jr. said. That magazine that Armstrong Jr. launched features a plethora of feminist content. Upon relocating to Florida,

“I have found a community that sustains me on a daily basis.” - Susan MacDonald BLAST assistant organizer

Tony Armstrong Jr. Photo via Facebook.

Armstrong renamed the business “Empty Closet Productions” and focuses more on event planning now. Armstrong has also used her passion to explore other avenues of activism. She has funded, and helped in creating several films and documentaries. Some of the films include “Radical Harmonies,” which is about women’s music, “Bullied,” a film addressing anti-gay school violence, indie feature-length film “Hannah Free,” and “Jamie and Jessie Are Not Together.” Now, she’s the surveys editor and indexer for the Chicago Gay History Project, and the editor and publisher for a lesbian music industry newsletter. Susan MacDonald, an assistant organizer who runs BLAST mixers, is part of the Empty Closet Productions team that puts on concerts, theatrical events, and conferences. She’s come to appreciate Armstrong and the entire BLAST team, as they’ve given her a safe space she’s enthusiastic about. “As a lesbian, I moved to South Florida from NYC seven years ago with some trepidation,” MacDonald said. “Would I find a woman-identified community, a safe haven where I could enjoy the

companionship and support of women? Would I find opportunities to gather with other lesbians and women that included cultural, outdoor, and social activities?” MacDonald loves the bond she has formed with those in the BLAST community and Armstrong Jr. She said she is immensely proud to part of such an organization. “BLAST had 800 members when I joined; the membership now is over 3,500 women! I have gone to the beach, watched many movies, attended multiple lectures, enjoyed dancing and dining ... all in the company of other women. I have found a community that sustains me on a daily basis,” MacDonald said. MacDonald is hopeful that more and more lesbian women will covet the opportunities to make a difference in their respective communities, as she sees it as truly life-changing. “Historically, lesbians have been in the forefront of the feminist and other progressive movements. And, I am passionate that lesbians … continue to be recognized and acknowledged for their contributions in all spheres of community life,” MacDonald said.

R

esurrection Sunday is behind us, but Easter is not. The feast of Easter is a liturgical season of fifty days – i.e., the Great Fifty Days of Easter. Eastertide lasts through the Feast of Pentecost, which celebrates the outpouring of the Spirit on the Church. In 325, the Council of Nicaea directed that, during the Great Fifty Days of Easter, Christians should pray standing in the posture of the Resurrection and repeatedly sing “Alleluia,” which contrasts sharply with the Lenten season when alleluia is omitted. Eastertide is a time when it is especially appropriate for us to reflect on being a People of the Resurrection reconciled with God and each other in Christ. Reconciliation is at the heart of the Gospel as well as the mission of the Church. It is difficult to understand how some can rationalize their harsh judgment of others with our God, who – as Holy Scripture tells us – is a God of

love, and who in Christ gave us a New Commandment – to love as we are loved. Some of our fellow Christians are just too intense; it’s not our role to judge others. After all, there is a God and it’s not us. It’s for this reason that we at St. Nicholas try not to take ourselves too seriously. With that said, we take seriously the command to love and to serve in Christ’s name. I’m pleased to announce that in addition to serving nearly 31,000 hot, spiritlifting meals since September 2016 to the homeless and working poor through our Holy Grill mobile feeding ministry, we have expanded our signature ministry to include a mobile food bank supplying nearly 50 different feeding programs from South Miami in Dade County to North Palm Beach County. We welcome volunteers of all faiths and no faiths. All we ask is that you have a caring heart. Join us and learn what a blessing it is to be a blessing for others.

sexual satisfaction from a “real man” is something that us post-Stonewall queers would consider to be sexist and self-hating. Though I am a bottom in bed, I consider myself to be as “masculine” as any of my sex partners - who I fully expect to be selfdefined, masculine gay men. And I can only love an equal. At the same time, I realize that my opinions are a product of my time and place. Had I lived anywhere else - or at any other time - I might still be queer, but I would have manifested my sexuality differently. What we know as the gay liberation movement began in Western Europe, later spreading to the U.S., Canada and Australia, and is only now beginning to make headway in what used to be called the third world. In all of these places the movement only began after the current model of “the homosexual” - as a people and as a community - took hold. By dividing the population into rigid categories based on sex and gender, society encouraged queer people to create institutions of our own making. From these institutions came the idea of the homosexual community, and from that, the concept of a self-defined people seeking rights. In the early 1970s, we had a category called “political lesbians;” women who discovered their affinity for other women through their involvement in the women’s movement. Likewise, it is my belief that the gay movement has “allowed” many men,

“political queers” if you please, to accept and explore their own homosexuality. In other surroundings, these men might have been self-defined “real men;” married men seeking surreptitious sex in public toilets. Or they might have been effeminate “fairies” looking for “real men” who would treat them “like a woman.” Instead, we who are gay are here, they are queer, and you better get used to it. Though male and female homosexuality have existed since the beginning of our species, the social model of homosexuality has changed repeatedly over the years. When St. Paul and the authors of Leviticus condemned men who “lie with mankind as with womankind,” they were not thinking about the men who inhabit the industrialized world at the beginning of the 21st century. Muhammad did not like queers either, but some of his followers look the other way when their sons seek sexual release with other males. Sexual paradigms change over the years, and yesterday’s sodomite might find today’s brave gay world a strange place to live in. On the other hand, freeing sexuality from gender and sex roles has allowed more men to take a positive stand and to adopt a forthright gay identity. Indeed, the old gay saying, that “today’s trade is tomorrow’s competition,” is true in more ways than one.

Trans Talk

Sex Education and the Church Atticus Ranck

I

grew up going to church and, for the most part, I enjoyed it. It was the hub of my social life. My mom and dad both grew up in the same church. My mom’s dad was the youth group leader while my mom was growing up. My parents were the youth group leaders while I was growing up. My parents got married in that church and they raised my siblings and me in that church. It felt like every time the church was open we were there. We attended Sunday school and Sunday morning service, Sunday night service, and Wednesday night services, too. The church I grew up in is an independent Biblebelieving church that’s not affiliated with any specific denomination. It takes the Bible pretty literally. It doesn’t believe in same-gender marriage. Women are not allowed to be elders, deacons, or pastors. The 21st cntury has not changed its mind on these things. It believes men are the head of the household as they are the head of the church. The church I grew up in believed that women and men were equally important but they had separate roles. It maintained that the children’s ministry is as important as being the pastor, yet only one gender can be the pastor, whereas men could also serve in the children’s ministry. When I entered youth group, we were oftentimes split into gendered groups for various activities and lessons so I was always with the females. As in many youth groups, one of the subjects we focused on most often

18

was sex. In my opinion, the church is obsessed with sex - when to do it and not do it, how people are doing it, the genders of the people doing it. It’s everywhere! I thought more about sex while I was at church than almost anywhere else. During our girls-only small groups, we often read books and talked about how to abstain from sex before marriage. My church had a hard line you didn’t cross when it came to premarital sex and the view was very clear: sex is a gift from God that is only between a married man and woman. One of the analogies we were told that has stuck with me is the story of the gift. Sex is like a present. Every sexual act we engaged in before marriage put a small tear in the wrapping of the gift. If we had sex before marriage, even if the sex was with your fiancé, the entire present would be unwrapped. What did we want to gift our husbands on our wedding night? A nicely wrapped present, a present with shredded wrapping, or a present that isn’t wrapped at all? Sex education through the church was incredibly heterosexist and binary, to start. It doesn’t allow room for anybody other than heterosexual, cisgender

The church hadn’t prepared me to actually express what I needed in the bedroom or how to say no to what I didn’t like. individuals. But beyond that, it also assumes that everyone wants to have sex and wants to have it with the opposite sex. No wonder I was so confused about my own sexual orientation. I wish I would have learned more about sex in the ways I needed to know. The church hadn’t prepared me to actually express what I needed in the bedroom or how to say no to what I didn’t like. They didn’t tell me that not all sex is amazing or consensual. They didn’t prepare me to communicate with my partner, to be vulnerable, to know what I needed and then express it. The church talked a lot about how sex is a beautiful gift from God to be used in the right circumstances. But they didn’t teach me about what that gift was supposed to look like. They told me not to have sex but they didn’t teach me how to love someone.

Psychiatrist who Argued Homosexuality Isn’t a Disorder Dies Richard Green was an early straight ally Graham Brunk

P

rior to the 1970s homosexuality was labeled as a mental illness officially by the American Psychiatric Association. As we know here in Florida, the state made great efforts to curb the behavior of gays by raiding bars or hang out spots and publishing literature educating (or miseducating depending on how you look at it) the public. Most psychiatrists that studied the issue came from the angle of mental illness and never really entertained any other method to study the gay population and the real psychiatry behind it. That changed in 1972 when for the first time, Richard Green, sexologist and psychiatrist, published his findings in “The International Journal for Psychiatry” in an article aptly titled “the premise that homosexuality is a disease or a homosexual is inferior.” In that article he made a case for removing homosexuality from the mental illness classification on the grounds that people were simply born gay. He went on to state that he felt we would even find genes one day proving his argument. Green died on April 6 of esophageal cancer. He was 82 years old.

Upon writing his research Green was advised that it would ruin his career if he published it. He still did and in the following year, he presented his findings directly to the board of the American Psychiatric Association and homosexuality was officially removed from the board’s list of mental disorders. This was not the first time Green was an advocate for the gay community. In 1962, he also testified in the defense of a Nicaraguan man facing deportation due to his sexuality and won. He also testified in defense of a transgender woman who was facing termination from her job as a pilot with Eastern Airlines. In 1987, he published a book further detailing his studies of homosexuality called “The Sissy Boy Syndrome and the Development of Homosexuality,” which further publicized his theories. Green himself was actually very much a heterosexual but should absolutely be remembered as a great ally to the LGBT community who helped pave the way for gay liberation and acceptance at an important level.

Upon writing his research Green was advised that it would ruin his career if he published it.

ommunity leader and author Eric Rofes was the first person to refer to me as “a gay Mr. Rogers.” It was in the mid-1980s, at a “roast” of Rofes, prior to his departure from Boston to Los Angeles. I laughed with the others in the room, but was young enough to feel defensive, probably incorrectly imagining that he saw Mr. Rogers as effeminate, sexless, and wimpy, a man who wore tennis shoes, and cardigan sweaters knitted by his mother, and talked to preschoolers with hand puppets. I wanted to be appraised by my peers as a writer and speaker, a leader of the city’s AIDS strategy, and, maybe as a masculine, attractive man, but not for my kindness. I wasn’t effeminate, sexless, or wimpy, I thought. Why would he say that? With more thought, I understood that he didn’t think of me poorly, and I came to gratefully embrace the comparison when I heard it. Mr. Rogers was a very kind man. I’m a kind man. Kindness is a most worthy attribute. Besides, I now wear tennis shoes, cardigan sweaters, and have puppets on my hands to entertain our young grandnieces and grandnephews. As it turns out, Mr. Rogers was bisexual, telling a friend that he found women and men equally attractive. He was heterosexually married, with children, but I can imagine that if he had grown into adulthood a decade or two later, he would have been in a gay marriage. Regardless of his sexuality, Fred Rogers, a Presbyterian minister, was a very gentle, thoughtful, giving man who was dedicated than Danny Kaye, whose names doubtfully Irish Catholic who dressed and behaved well, who quickly, to enabling children to feel safe and resonate with you, unless you’re over 65. he international organization Dining Out For Life (DOFL) began in 1991 as a direct response to the HIV/AIDS crisis that was gripping the nation. Participating restaurants commit to donating a minimum of 30% of their sales on the day of the event. The funds donated go directly toward helping people who are living with HIV/AIDS. In 2018, more than 50 local HIV service organizations partnered with 3,000 participating restaurants, 3,000 volunteers, and more than 300,000 diners to raise an astonishing $4.1 million for people living with HIV/AIDS. All funds raised through a city’s DOFL event stay in that city to provide help and hope to people living with or impacted by HIV/AIDS. Broward House is in its seventh

year of participating in DOFL. All money raised stays in Broward County, supporting programs at Broward House. Want to show your support? Make plans to dine out on Thursday, April 25 for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Invite everyone you know to do the same. Compass, based in Palm Beach County, is participating in DOFL for the first time this year. The date for DOFL Palm Beach is April 30. See the sidebar for a list of participating restaurants.

Dixie Hwy. in Wilton Manors. Tickets start at $30 at RonnieLarsen.com.

OUTshine Festival Offers

Most Diverse Films Yet J.W. Arnold

T

he OUTshine LGBT Film Festival, celebrating its 21st anniversary in Miami with screenings of more than 85 features, documentaries and shorts from around the world, concludes this weekend with equally jarring and uplifting representations of contemporary LGBT lives. SFGN got a sneak peak at some of the films being screened during the festival’s final weekend: “Mom + Mom” Karole di Tommaso, director Italy/81 mins./Italian (with English subtitles) Thursday, April 25, 7 p.m. Regal Cinemas South Beach This is the story of two women who desire to have a child together. Karole and Ali still don’t know that the enthusiasm of this first attempt will be followed by many hardships, but when the desire becomes stronger than the pain and fatigue, miracles can happen. SFGN: As more and more same-sex couples contemplate becoming parents, this film offers a nicely filmed, but sobering reminder that getting pregnant (or adopting) is really the easiest part of building a family. Be careful what you wish for.

The South African entries are especially strong this year. 30

4 .24.2019

“Canary” (“Kanarie”) Christiaan Olwagen, director South Africa/120 mins./English and Afrikaans (with English subtitles) Friday, April 26, 6:45 p.m. Regal Cinemas South Beach Set in 1985 South Africa against a backdrop of apartheid, religion, and war, Canary is a charming musical drama chronicling one teen’s struggle to find his voice. After being drafted, Johan joins the Canaries (the South African Defense Force Church Choir) in an effort to avoid fighting a war he can’t support, but recognizes its role in the oppression and injustice. SFGN: The South African entries are especially strong this year. “Canary” has a lot of heart and demonstrates that music is truly a universal language that transcends race, culture and, yes, sexual orientation. “Leonard Soloway’s Broadway” Jeff Wolk, director U.S.A./98 mins./English Saturday, April 26, 12:15 p.m. Regal Cinemas South Beach This documentary captures a Broadway few have ever seen, as told through the eyes of a legendary Broadway producer you’ve probably never heard of. Leonard Soloway lived an unconventional life on his own terms and, over a 70-year span, staged over 100 shows, winning over 40 Tony Awards, 62 Tony nominations, 21 Drama Desk Awards, 29 Drama Desk nominations and three Pulitzer Prizes. SFGN: “He was gay and Jewish before anybody was gay and Jewish.” “Leonard is the person in our business who always tells the truth.” No self-respecting “theater queen” can pass on this engaging and informative documentary. Enough said.

“The Shiny Shrimps,” a comedy about a misfit French LGBT water polo team, closes the 2019 OUTshine Film Festival on Sunday. Credit: Les Improductibles.

“My Father, the Bride” (“Oishi Kazoku”) International Premiere Japan/Japanese (with English subtitles) Saturday, April 26, 5:15 p.m. Regal Cinemas South Beach Tohka returns to the island where she grew up to attend the second memorial service for her late mother. She is greeted by her father, Seiji, who is wearing her mother’s clothes and announces that he is getting married again...to a local handyman, Kazuo. SFGN: While powerful transgender “coming out” stories are commonplace in American and European films, it’s refreshing to experience this life changing event through the lens of Japan’s strict cultural stereotypes. Despite the serious subject, it’s still a lighthearted and cheeky film.

“The Shiny Shrimps” (“Les Crevettes Pailletées”) Maxime Govare and Cédric Le Gallo, directors France/90 mins./French (with English subtitles) Sunday, April 28, 6 p.m. Regal Cinemas South Beach Matthias, an Olympic swimming champion at the end of his career, makes a homophobic statement on TV. His punishment: coach the Shiny Shrimps, a very flamboyant, very bad and very LGBT water polo team. They have only one goal, to qualify for the Gay Games in Croatia. SFGN: Hands down, “The Tiny Shrimps” is the funniest film of the festival. Directors Govare and Le Gallo never allow the humor to get raunchy or ridiculous, yet the film is always peppered with the right amount of camp.

The OUTshine Film Festival runs through Sunday, April 28. Screenings are at the Regal Cinemas South Beach, 1120 Lincoln Rd. in Miami Beach. For a complete schedule and tickets, go to OUTshineFilm.com.

ou don’t have to be Dr. Phil—or Dr. Ruth, as a matter of fact—to figure out that playwright Ronnie Larsen is more than slightly obsessed with sex. His works include the Off Broadway sensation “Making Porn,” the story of a straight man who finds himself sucked into the world of gay porn; “All-Male Peep Show,” the story of sex workers in seedy 1990s Times Square; and “The Penis Talk Show,” a hilarious live comedy act in which audiences get to ask three anonymous naked guys anything about their male organs. Now, Larsen is producing a revival of one of his most popular plays, “Cocksucker: A Love Story,” which premiered in South Florida three years ago and yielded record ticket sales. Like “Peep Show,” inspired by Larsen’s experiences as a young playwright living in New York, “Cocksucker” is autobiographical. Larsen, who also directs, stars as Isaac, a gay man with an obsession for oral sex. Early on, he realizes his attraction isn’t to other gay men, but to the straight men he encounters at adult movie theaters and truck stops. When Isaac dons any frumpy frock and a wig, however, these “straight” men get caught up in the illusion and cast inhibitions aside, allowing “Truck Stop Sally” to pleasure them. Along the way, Isaac encounters opportunistic Harry, a gay filmmaker who takes a lesson from Isaac’s playbook, videotaping straight Marines who think they are auditioning for straight porn flicks.

Unfortunately, Harry is either not as skilled as Isaac or simply unlucky, when the game turns ugly and one of the Marines is courtmartialed. And then there is Joshua, a young Marine recruit from rural Mississippi, who feels an attraction to Sally and at first seems open to the idea of relationship with Sally (and Isaac). That’s the love story. Aside from “Making Porn,” which has been produced around the world, including multiple times in South Florida, Larsen has never repeated one of his plays at a local theater until now. “This is a first,” the prolific playwright explained, adding, “but my fans were practically begging for another chance to see this show. It’s amazing.” Truck Stop Sally has made guest appearances at “The Penis Talk Show” and other special events over the years and audiences always seem to relate to Larsen’s outrageous alter ego, he said. For this revival, Larsen is bringing back Ryan Knight, an Australian actor who starred in his recent production of S. Asher Gelman’s Off Broadway hit “Afterglow,” as Harry. The role of the young Marine, Joshua, will be portrayed by Artur Zolotaryov, making his Wilton Theater Factory debut. “It’s always a sentimental reunion whenever Sally enters the room,” Larsen said. “But I think Ryan and Artur are going to make this a new and very exciting experience for audiences, whether they’ve seen the play before or not.”
