youth shelter, arresting 19 LGBT people and charging them with “a negligent act likely to spread infection of disease.” Also, the lawmakers seek the inclusion of LGBT people in both short- and long-term response and recovery programs in addition to calling on partner countries to adopt the same approach. “Restrictions aimed at preventing the spread of COVID-19 have placed a large burden on those in the informal economy, cutting off income streams and preventing them from obtaining food or secure shelter,” the letter says. “As a result, the pandemic has heightened the vulnerability of LGBTQI and other marginalized populations to poverty, food insecurity and homelessness.” As an example, the letter cites governments such as Panama and Colombia are using gender to determine when people are allowed to leave their homes for essential services. As reported by the Blade, critics say those policies in Latin American

bicameral group of congressional lawmakers led by Rep. Dina Titus (D-Nev.) and Sen. Edward Markey (D-Mass.) are calling on the Trump administration to ensure international efforts to assist with the COVID-19 pandemic overseas include relief for LGBTQ people. In a letter dated May 7 obtained exclusively by the Washington Blade, the 47 members of Congress — all Democrats — make the case the U.S. response to the coronavirus overseas “will be seen as a test of our country’s commitment to the protection of human rights and American values of fairness and equality.” The lawmakers urge the State Department and U.S. Agency for International Development to protect LGBTQ human rights overseas during the coronavirus crisis in three ways: First, the letter calls on the Trump administration to “intervene at senior levels with governments that are using the COVID-19 crisis to persecute or discriminate against LGBTQI and other marginalized communities.” As an example, the letter cites Ugandan authorities in March raiding a homeless

countries have resulted in arbitrary arrests and harassment of trans and gender nonconforming people. Finally, the lawmakers call for access to health services the United States provides overseas, such as “treatment for HIV and other COVID-exacerbating conditions, as well as other necessary healthcare services, including sexual and reproductive health.” “LGBTQI people and other vulnerable populations face stigma and discrimination in obtaining healthcare services, especially in countries where same-sex sexual conduct or non-normative gender expression is criminalized,” the letter says. “This hinders access to lifesaving healthcare services and puts their lives at even greater risk during this pandemic.” The State Department declined to comment on the letter, citing a general practice of no comment on congressional correspondence. USAID didn’t immediately respond to a request to comment.

he Alibi, in collaboration with SFGN, will host a hot dog giveaway on Saturday from 2 p.m. until the dogs run out. “Come get a meal,” Johnny Pak, owner of Alibi said. Pak has been cooking meals once a week for his staff for the last three weeks. “So many people have been struggling because not everyone has been getting unemployment,” Pak said. This is the first week they’re opening it up to the public. While much of Florida has entered Phase 1 of reopening, Pak said he probably won’t open the Alibi until Phase 3 when bars are allowed to reopen. “We’re more of a bar/slash restaurant,”
he said. “We still do more in alcohol.” He made the decision to keep the restaurant closed during the pandemic and not serve takeout or delivery to keep his staff safe from the virus.

ight now, it’s an apartment building under construction. Soon, it will be surrounded by art, and color, and inspiring images. The Pride Center at Equality Park is working with ArtServe and others in seeking proposals from artists for the design of The Murals at Equality Park. It’s a 2,900 square foot public art installation project. It’s the latest phase for the Residences at Equality Park, a Wilton Manors affordable housing project catering to LGBT seniors is moving forward. It will be an inspiring opportunity for the chosen artist and some exciting promotion opportunities for the finalists. The Pride Center is looking for a clean, vibrant design that celebrates inclusivity and diversity — and integrates elements representative of the South Florida LGBT community. The mural as public art should reflect Broward’s commitment as a welcoming and inclusive community, complement the character of the building and inspire social interaction. “We want artists to feel emboldened by the
bustling, life-enhancing, pro-health, diverse work of the many organizations on this campus,” the group said in a statement. “We want them to use this inspiration to fuel their creativity. We seek a powerful, transformative, meaningful, bold design. We will commission a series of 3-6 art pieces from the chosen artist.” Candidates must be professional artists or designers as validated by a resume, eligible to work in the U.S., and over the age of 18. Broward resident artists are strongly encouraged to apply. The selected artist will be paid a stipend of $5,000 to execute the designing of The Murals. The budget must include artist’s designing fee and presentation expenses. Artists’ proposals/ portfolio submissions are due Monday, June 15.

onfirmed cases of COVID-19 in Wilton Manors as of Monday rose 30% to 110 since a week ago. Last week that number stood at 85. In Oakland Park confirmed cases rose to 87 from 77 last week. “We are concerned about the increasing numbers in Wilton Manors and are working closely with Broward County officials and other local Mayors regarding health, safety and a coordinated reopening effort,” said Wilton Manors City Commissioner Paul Rolli. “It is the responsibility of every person to take personal responsibility to protect ourselves and others in all circumstances.” Many of those new cases might be from the Manor Pines Convalescent Center, an assisted living facility in the city, which now has 49 current cases among residents and 29 cases among staff. Last week those combined numbers stood at 59. These numbers though, according to the state’s report, are not cumulative and were last updated May 8. Sixteen residents from the facility have died of COVID-19, the most of any nursing facility in South Florida. “This situation involving Manor Pines is heartbreaking and we express our sympathies to the families of those who have passed,” Rolli said. According to the Florida Department of Health as of Monday, 5,858 people have tested positive in Broward County, up from 5,312 a week ago. A week ago Florida entered Phase 1 of its reopening, but that did not include MiamiDade, Broward or Palm Beach counties. On Monday Palm Beach County entered Phase 1 as well, while on Friday Governor Ron DeSantis said he’d like to move Broward and Miami-Dade into Phase 1 on May 18. “Even if the governor and county allow businesses to re-open, the bottom line is residents should do what they think is necessary to not catch the virus or spread it to others,” Wilton Manors City Commissioner Gary Resnick said. “Particularly elderly persons and persons with any health issues should be staying home, and avoiding contact as much as possible. Just because the state and county open businesses does not mean going there is safe. And if the state or county makes a bad decision, there’s no do-over for those that get sick or die. Governments cannot protect you.” Resnick noted that DeSantis extended the Emergency Order another 60 days, allowing Wilton Manors and other local governments to continue to hold virtual meetings. Carson said there is an item on the agenda for Tuesday’s virtual commission meeting to purchase $20,000 worth of cleaning supplies and hand sanitizer in preparation of the city’s reopening. She believes these supplies will last four to six months. “Business owners should make similar investments for the future,” Carson said. Some parks in the city reopened a week ago including Hagen Park, Mickel Park and all boat ramps, which are now open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Guidelines for visiting the parks are as follows: – All visitors must practice six-feet social distancing and wear a face covering when social distancing is not possible – Tennis courts may be used for singles play only – Limited restroom facilities and water fountains will be open
“The measured opening of some parks in the City [...] is an appropriate response, given that Florida, Broward County, and Wilton Manors continue to see cases climb and more people are dying from this virus,” Resnick previously said. Carson is encouraging those that have the ability to donate money to give to this GoFundMe page, set up to assist the employees of Wilton Manors businesses. So far it has raised $7,001. “The COVID 19 pandemic puts us all in challenging circumstances and to get through it we are all going to have to work together like never before,” Rolli said. In Fort Lauderdale there have been 1,364 (1,240) cases. (The numbers in parenthesis are from last week.) Meanwhile there are 40,596 (36,078) confirmed cases in Florida, more than 1.37 million (1.2 million) in the U.S., and globally more than 4.21 million (3.5 million). So far there have been 1,721 (1,379) deaths in Florida, 80,000 (69,000) in the U.S. and globally more than 284,000 (250,000). Looking at the four individual zip codes that include some portion of Wilton Manors 33305 has 91(69) cases; 33306 has 8; 33334 has 90 (84), and 33311, which includes a large part of Fort Lauderdale has 336 (319). All of the zip codes include portions of neighboring cities.

VATICAN GIVES MONEY TO TRANSGENDER SEX WORKERS IN ITALY

T
he Vatican has given money to a group of transgender sex workers in Italy who are struggling to survive during the coronavirus pandemic. Gay.it, an Italian LGBT newspaper, reported the trans sex workers in Torvaianica, a coastal city that is outside of Rome, approached a parish priest last month and asked him to help them buy food. Reuters reported the nationwide lockdown the Italian government imposed on March 9 to curb the pandemic in the country has depleted the parish’s resources. The priest therefore sent the trans sex workers’ request to Cardinal Konrad Krajewski, who oversees the Vatican’s charities. Krajewski sent an undisclosed amount of money to the parish. “I don’t understand why this is getting so much attention,” Krajewski told Reuters on April 30 during a telephone interview. “This is ordinary work for the church, it’s normal. This is how the church is a field hospital.” Gay.it said roughly 20 trans sex workers — mostly from Latin America — benefitted from the donation. The Italian LGBTQ newspaper also reported many of them thanked Pope Francis in audio messages they sent to Krajewski. “In this case, the Pope made a human action,” Tiziana Fisichella, coordinator of

Milan Pride, told the Washington Blade on Tuesday in a WhatsApp message. “He looked beyond social stigma and took care of people forgotten by society.” The Vatican’s tone towards LGBT-specific issues has moderated since Francis became pope in 2013. Church teachings on them, however, have not changed. Activists have repeatedly criticized Francis over his comments against “gender ideology.” Media reports this week also indicate former Pope Benedict XVI in an authorized biography reiterated his opposition to marriage rights for same-sex couples. Fisichella told the Blade the Vatican’s donation to the trans sex workers in Italy “alone cannot repair the social damage of their statements.” “We know how influential the statements of the church are,” she added. “Catholic judgment is a strong deterrent to obtaining equal rights. Sure, it’s not the only problem, but a big part [of it.]”

GAY MEN CAN NOW DONATE BLOOD IN BRAZIL Andrew Dier
M
en who have sex with men are now able to donate blood without any waiting period in Brazil. This came in a 7-4 decision in the country’s Federal Supreme Court to overturn a decades-old ban on May 8. Previously, men who have sex with men were required to wait one full year following their last homosexual encounter to be able to donate blood, a restriction that had been imposed during the AIDS crisis of the 1980s. The verdict is the culmination of a long process: it was brought to the court in 2016. Gilmar Mendes, a member of the court who advocated for the change, celebrated the decision saying, that it “has the potential to save lives, especially at a time when blood donations have dwindled and hospitals face a critical shortage as people stay home
and heartbeats stop due to the coronavirus pandemic.” With over 11,000 confirmed deaths so far, Brazil is considered a hotspot for the virus in South America. Its president Jair Bolsonaro has come under criticism for his response to coronavirus, and has been quoted as referring to it as “the flu.” Several countries have revisited their blood donation guidelines in recent months due to the coronavirus emergency. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) set out new guidelines in April shortening the waiting period after male-male sexual contact from 12 to three months. Denmark, Hungary and Northern Ireland have also eased their blood donation restrictions for gay and bisexual men.
THE VERDICT IS THE CULMINATION OF A LONG PROCESS: IT WAS BROUGHT TO THE COURT IN 2016.

GERMANY TO BAN CONVERSION THERAPY FOR MINORS Photo via PxFuel.
Michael K. Lavers Washington Blade
L
awmakers in Germany on Thursday approved a bill that will ban so-called conversion therapy for minors in the country. Health Minister Jens Spahn, who is openly gay, introduced the measure last fall. Chancellor Angela Merkel supports the bill. The Lesbian and Gay Federation in a statement stated it supports to ban the widely discredited practice. The German LGBT advocacy group nevertheless said the bill should have been expanded to ban conversion therapy for anyone under 26. “The German Bundestag took an incredibly important step today — by banning ‘conversion therapy’ it sent a powerful message that LGBTIQ people are not in need of change or cure,” said OutRight Action International Executive Director Jessica Stern in a press release. “At the same time, demand for “conversion therapy” will only decrease if acceptance of LGBTIQ people grows. I urge authorities in Germany
to bolster the legal ban on ‘conversion therapy’ with measures designed to promote understanding and inclusion of LGBTIQ people, thus tackling the root causes of these harmful, inhuman practices.” The OutRight Action International press release notes Brazil, Ecuador, Malta and Taiwan are the other countries that have banned conversion therapy. Canadian lawmakers in March introduced a bill that would ban conversion therapy in their country. Maryland and D.C. are among the U.S. jurisdictions that also prohibit the practice.

LGBT ACTIVIST TO HOST ART AUCTION FOR LOCAL ARTISTS DURING SHUTDOWN Deon C. Jefferson

THE PANDEMIC CONTINUES TO DRASTICALLY AFFECT THE WORLD. MANY HAVE BEEN AFFECTED LOCALLY. UNEMPLOYMENT IS THE HIGHEST IT’S BEEN SINCE THE GREAT DEPRESSION, AND “SOCIAL DISTANCING” HAS BECOME SOMEWHAT OF THE NEW NORM. The Box Gallery owner Rolando Chang Barrero along with artist Camilla Webster have joined forces to produce the first ever Art Altruist Auction with the Hindman Auctions. On May 29 this auction will support artists in Palm Beach County through Art Synergy Aid. Newly formed in April, the Art Altruist group consists of Palm Beach art leaders like Kate Waterhouse, Guy Clark, Valeray Francisco Camilla Webster. These artists all have national recognition and have been globally acclaimed. “Watching every gallery, studio and museum close in Palm Beach due to the coronavirus pandemic I realized there was an urgency to create virtual sales platforms like the altruistic art auction for Art Synergy Aid,” Webster said. “Our board has excellent relationships with auction houses, galleries, art fairs and artists. So we could move at a record pace with industry support. We’re also all deeply creative ourselves so we can pivot and build.” Art Synergy is inviting artists from Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie and Broward Counties to apply original art. Artists looking to participate will be required to submit an application to the jury and apply via Juried Art Services. All monies raised shall be divided 50/50, meaning 50 percent goes towards Art Synergy Aid Fund for emergency needs of the artist and the other goes straight to the artist. Fifty percent of the proceeds from the auction being held at Hindman will go to the fund as well. Any artist needing the emergency grant can apply until the funds have been exhausted. and check points. Art Synergy is a unique countywide movement of artist, businesses, and civic leaders dedicated to unifying and promoting the diverse culture of Palm Beach County’s and South Florida’s vibrant and booming arts community. Art Synergy was established in 2013. For decades artists have proven that art can change perspective, whether it is political or thought provoking. Art Altruist auction will continue the long tradition of bringing art to the forefront in tragic times. The Box gallery in West Palm Beach is one of the major galleries affected by the shutdown. “Extraordinary times call for extraordinary measures and extraordinary love,” said Rolando Chang Barrero, Art Synergy President. “The overwhelming commitment to Art Synergy Aid Auction and The Art Altruist Auction at Hindman Auctions is an example of our extraordinary love for the creative’s in our community. Having been personally rescued from financial ruin by the community at the onset of the COVID-19 crisis, I am resolute in serving my community.” As a direct result of the pandemic and the impact it will have on Palm Beach County’s arts and culture and the exhibition cancelations, museum and gallery closures, Art Altruists have produced a viable and sustainable project that can readily be adopted nation-wide. Their goal is to support the artists in all media by providing primary or additional source of income to meet their financial needs and keep them working throughout this crisis. There will two be auctions, one locally on May 22, and then the national auction with Hindman Auction will be on May 29.

was set up by “Obama’s FBI.” At the time, the president had no power over Mueller’s inquiry. But that was then and this is now. Today, Mueller and his team are no longer in business. Along comes William Barr, and today Trump has a tool to carry out his treason. No longer checked by Robert Mueller, Barr last week asked the court that was getting ready to sentence General Flynn to dismiss all the charges against him instead. It is corruption of the highest order. On the same day that the number of American deaths from the coronavirus topped 65,000, Trump declared for the umpteenth time that the Mueller investigation was a “hoax,” and that Flynn, who had even lied to the Vice President, was a “hero.” The world is upside down at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. The case will be going before Judge Emmet G. Sullivan relatively soon. There are two possible outcomes, but neither will stop Michael Flynn from going free. If Judge Sullivan grants the Justice Department’s motion by Attorney General Barr, the prosecution will be dropped, and
Flynn will walk away from everything, “exonerated” legally. On the other hand, Judge Sullivan has the discretion to refuse to let Flynn withdraw his plea. If he does that, and sets a sentencing date for Flynn, or orders him to jail, the jurist has a chance to be an American profile in courage. If Judge Sullivan does deny Barr’s illegitimate request to drop the charges, President Trump will be forced to pardon him instead. Flynn will then simply be another crook walking barefoot on Trump’s broken highway of lies. For the sake of the American justice system, and what is left of it after three years with Trump in the White House, let’s hope Judge Sullivan stands his ground. If Flynn is to go free, force the president to pardon the liar. Let him appeal the ruling, sadly to a coterie of incompetent judges who Trump has poisoned the judiciary with, these past few years. We will live with that forever. Winning. I am so tired of all the winning. November 3 can’t come soon enough.

Money Makes the World Go Around… By Sal Torre

There is a growing crescendo of voices calling for the opening of businesses and the end to COVID-related restrictions. As I ponder all that is being voiced, a jingle from the musical Cabaret keeps playing in the back of my mind. “A mark, a yen, a buck or a pound is all that makes the world go around, money money money…” Understandably, we all need to be very concerned about our country’s economy. Being out of work in an ongoing recession will be a lot worse than having spent the last few weeks home from work. Yet the failure of good leadership at the national level leaves many of us very confused, scared, unsure and wondering if you can ingest Lysol or bleach. Insanity has become the new norm. Workers in Florida cannot collect the unemployment payments owed to them for more than six weeks, and yet we hear wealthy out-of-touch business leaders complaining that workers would rather stay on the dole than return to work. Unfortunately, the reality is that many are standing in food distribution lines, frustrated at not getting needed unemployment funds from the state. “If you happen to be rich, you can ring-ting-a-ling for a maid, money money money money money, you can take it on the chin, to recover on your 14-carat yacht, money makes the world go around, the world go around...” Hopefully, the South Florida economy can start chugging along the track of recovery at a faster and faster pace in the weeks and months ahead. People want to get back to work, want to see their children in school, want to have a job, security, health care and the means to provide for their families. However, exposing workers to a virus that could kill them or a family member does nothing for our recovery. Money does make the world go around, and local leaders, small business owners and many workers understand the need to get our economy back on track. We must do this with the best information, scientific

data, accessible testing, and assistance from our federal and state governments. Local municipalities and counties need to function with a balanced budget. Shortfalls in revenues for our Island City are projected to be over $500,000 for this fiscal year. That is a huge blow for a small city like ours. Thankfully, our budget operates mainly on revenue from property taxes. We might not see much of a decline in our property values before the tax rolls are closed in June, however, if we enter a harsh recession moving into next year, those declining property values will be waiting for us next budget cycle. Life will not just spring back to the way things were before COVID-19 shut our economy down back in March. We will not see a packed Friday night at Hunter’s anytime soon. Celebrations like Stonewall Festival have been cancelled, Wilton Drive is still mostly shut down, and people are not working. Optimistically, we will begin to re-open cautiously, people will start to return to work, our federal government will approve

additional stimulus funding and COVID-19 infection rates will continue to decrease. In case you think we have nothing else to worry about here in our Island City, don’t forget that our Hurricane Season begins next month. State and local officials need to be very concerned as Hurricane Season progresses over the next few months. Speaking of money, many municipalities in South Florida have not yet been reimbursed by FEMA for monies owed from last season. As all this news swirls inside my mind, I take comfort that our city has great leadership, not just with our elected officials, but with our City Manager, new Finance Director, and an unbelievably dedicated city staff. As tough decisions will need to be made concerning budgetary issues, our dedicated city staff deserve and need our support. So, let’s hope our city can begin to re-open cautiously, that our small business owners can get back up and running, that employees can once again begin to get a paycheck, and that we can avoid a major recession that will cause further damage to many lives here in our Island City. Yes money, along with caring for our neighbors, protecting our city staff, practicing healthy personal hygiene, social distancing, and additional support from our federal government will make life just better here. Doug Blevins To Run for Wilton Manors City Commission By Jason Parsley Doug Blevins, a long-time community activist and realtor, has announced his candidacy for the City Commission of Wilton Manors. This isn’t Blevins’ first time seeking office. He ran for Mayor of Wilton Manors in 2014 against Gary Resnick. Blevins lost. Blevins’ resume includes being president of the South Middle River Civic Association in Fort Lauderdale. “Doug took a fledgling neighborhood by enlisting old and new residents to help fight crime, drug dealers, blight and neglect,” reads a press release announcing his candidacy. “He was awarded Volunteer of the Year for District II in Fort Lauderdale.” Blevins has also served on several city boards and committees in Wilton Manors including the Board of Adjustment, the Budget Review Advisory Committee, Citizen’s Emergency Response Team the new City Hall Task Force, The Wilton Drive Task Force and currently serves on both the Wilton Drive Task Force and the Charter Review Board.

Additionally he’s served three terms as president of Wilton Manors Main Street, and as chairman of the Wilton Drive Improvement District, which was instrumental in the narrowing of Wilton Drive. In the press release Blevins notes the city will face many challenges once the coronavirus crisis has passed. He believes he’s the man for the job. “After COVID-19, the city must think outside the box,” Blevins said in the release. “I am ready for that responsibility and challenge.” WMG

CARE RESOURCE PROVIDES T E L E H E A LT H M E D I C A L A N D B E H AV I O R A L H E A LT H S E R V I C E S REMAINING COMMITTED TO QUALITY AND ACCESSIBLE CARE DURING COVID-19 In these challenging times, our emotional and physical health is compromised by the risk of COVID-19. In the face of this pandemic, Care Resource is even further committed to providing access to quality and comprehensive healthcare. We consistently strive to keep our patients’ holistic health in balance. In order to serve our patients while protecting them from COVID-19 by adhering to the practice of social distancing, we have expanded our telehealth medical and behavioral health services. Telehealth services are being covered by most commercial insurance carriers, including Medicaid and Medicare. Some insurance plans, such as Aetna and UnitedHealthcare, will cover telehealth services at no cost. Uninsured patients will be charged for the service on a sliding-scale basis. Those enrolled in the Ryan White program will also be able to benefit from telehealth services. In order to initiate a telehealth session, patients must call the health center and specifically request a telehealth appointment. Next, patients must download the Zoom application on a mobile device, or visit www.zoom.us in order to connect with a provider via video conference. Care Resource’s Behavioral Health Services Department will also offer all counseling services via telehealth. Our licensed behavioral health specialists are available to discuss the heightened levels of anxiety that our community is experiencing during this time and to offer coping mechanisms. Virtual support and social groups will replace in-person meetings. Emergency counseling services will be provided at all locations in Broward and Miami, but clients are encouraged to call prior to going in for services. For those patients in our Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) program, medical appointments will be scheduled as usual. If individuals are exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19, they should contact their provider prior to coming to their appointment in order for alternative arrangements to be made on a case-by-case basis.
ABOUT CARE RESOURCE: Care Resource is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization and a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) with four locations in Midtown Miami, Little Havana, Miami Beach, and Fort Lauderdale. The health center provides comprehensive health and support services to address the full health care needs of South Florida’s pediatric, adolescent and adult populations. 14

I
always find it remarkable when Biblical traditions are reflected in current events, as I mentioned in my previous article. Right now we are in the second half of the Omer period, a unit of time first designated in Leviticus 23:9-21. It began on the second night of Passover and concludes with the joyous holiday of Shavuot that begins on May 28. Originally an agricultural observance that involved bringing sheaves of barley to the Temple in Jerusalem, Shavuot has evolved into the celebration of the giving of the Ten Commandments on Mt. Sinai. Each day of the Omer is an invitation to “count our days, that we may attain a heart of wisdom,” (Psalm 90:12). Our tradition compels us to imagine ourselves in our history; that it was we who lived to escape slavery, then survived the plagues and the terrible deadly rush out of Egypt. It was we who leapt into the Red Sea ahead of Pharaoh’s army, and reached the other side drenched and exhausted, but alive. It was we who held back from the Golden Calf and made it through the resulting plague. And it was we who sat and learned in the wilderness about God’s commandments on how to live a holy life. It turned out that living a holy life was not so easy. We were required to tend to the needs of the Temple and community, feed, clothe, and house those who lacked these necessities; we were to be fair in our weights and measures, protect the environment, and do no harm to each other. We were all equal under the law, even the stranger who dwelled among us. We were urged to be kind, forgiving, compassionate, and simultaneously to leave off from revenge, spite, and malice. It is not an accident that the holiday foods associated with Shavuot are all dairy; it is said that nothing should be killed on the day of Revelation. The 49 days of the Omer are a special time, within what has this year turned out to be also a special time. Despite its origin as an agricultural celebration, the Omer developed a mourning aspect after the reported death of 24,000 students of Akiva, due to the disrespect with which they treated one another. The mourning restrictions are maintained for 33 days until Lag B’Omer (the 33rd day of the Omer); the day is celebrated as the one on which Rabbi Shimon ben Yohai recited the secrets of the Zohar, the book of Jewish mysticism. This mystical treasure has shown us that there is more to the counting of

Church of Our Savior, MCC 2011 s. Federal Hwy., Boynton Beach, FL 561-733-4000 www,churchofoursaviormcc.org the Omer than we first thought. The Zohar teaches that there are 10 aspects to God’s Unity. Three of these aspects, Binah, Chochmah, and Keter represent the Divine Consciousness. The following seven involve God’s emotions: Chesed (kindness), Gevurah (judgement), Tiferet (beauty), Netzach (victory), Hod (splendor), Yesod (foundation), and Malchut (sovereignty). During the seven weeks of the Omer, each aspect is assigned its own week during which it is examined in conjunction with the other aspects. Each day we are asked to consider, for example, chesed within chesed, the next day gevurah within chesed, the next day tiferet within chesed, and so on. It happens that we are in the week of netzach (victory, endurance, perpetuity). It seems to me that we generally spent much more time with gevurah (judgement) than any other aspect. We tend to ask whether someone deserves our chesed (kindness), as opposed to how can we engage chesed with this person. We see it in governmental support programs, whether someone deserves a check or housing or food. We see how some folks are deep into gevurah saying that their rights are being trampled when asked to wear a mask, or accept social distancing, or purchase limited quantities of foodstuffs. Sadly we see overweening examples of rampant gevurah such as “In a car accident? — you were driving too fast! Can’t pay your rent? — you should have a better job! Tired after a long day at work? — you should be thankful you have a job! Having trouble logging onto the unemployment site? — Loser!” All this does is to respond to someone’s pain with judgement. Whatever this response does for the speaker, it does not help the person in pain at all. And this is why we need to be reminded to be holy. We need reminders to act with kindness, grace, forgiveness, and even a touch of humility. May we all count the days of the Omer so that we may attain a heart of wisdom, grace, kindness, and forgiveness.

A&E FESTIVAL
VIRTUAL PRIDE RAISES FUNDS FOR LOCALS AFFECTED BY COVID COVID-19 J.W. Arnold
A
coalition of five regional Pride organizations raised more than $16,000 last weekend with a virtual Pride festival broadcast over social media and attracting 74,000 views. The festival was pulled together in less than four weeks by Miami Beach Pride, Gay 8 festival in Miami, Pride Fort Lauderdale, Wilton Manors Stonewall Pride and Palm Beach Pride, collaborating as the South Florida Pride Collective. “It came together very quickly,” said Miami Beach Pride executive director Rich Walczak, who proposed the joint effort. “There were hiccups along the way, definitely a learning curve, but, ultimately, it was successful.” More than 90 singers and entertainers, drag performers and DJs were featured over two days and 26 hours, May 9 - 10. The line-up included “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” host and “RuPaul’s Drag Race” judge Carson Kressley, “Pose” star Dominique Jackson, German recording artist Cascada, LGBT favorites Steve Grand and Melanie C, and a number of popular South Florida artists, including cabaret singers Jennifer McClain and Nicole Henry. Among the drag artists featured were Latrice Royale, Miss Coco Peru (performing with the South Florida Pride Wind Ensemble), TP Lords and emcees Kitty Meow, Tiffany Fantasia, Velvet Lenore and Melissa St. John. The program also reflected the cultural diversity of South Florida with a number of Latin artists, including Albita, Lucy Grau, Cachita Lopez and David Hernandez. iHeart Radio personalities Enrique Santos and GiGi Diaz were among the guest hosts for the broadcast. “…the goals were for every organization

to recruit the same talent they would use in their festival. By doing so, the virtual Pride would organically reflect our communities,” explained Damian Pardo, co-founder of Gay 8 festival, one of the largest Latin LGBT events in the country. Pardo also noted booking and scheduling the free performances from so many artists was one of the biggest hurdles for organizers. The program, produced by Palm Beach County-based Jager Technologies, wasn’t without the surprises that come with live production. Mid-afternoon on Saturday, a false fire alarm at Compass interrupted the broadcast, followed by the dispatch of a fire engine and several firefighters that sent the emcees swooning for several minutes. The team also had to deal with glitches from the Facebook Live platform that interrupted streaming several times
“THE GOALS WERE FOR EVERY ORGANIZATION TO RECRUIT THE SAME TALENT THEY WOULD USE IN THEIR FESTIVAL. BY DOING SO, THE VIRTUAL PRIDE WOULD ORGANICALLY REFLECT OUR COMMUNITIES.”
throughout the weekend. According to Jagers, Twitch, a gaming platform that is increasingly being utilized for virtual events, proved to be most reliable. The videos are still available for view on Facebook.com/ PrideCollectives. The festival was sponsored by Jack Daniels, AIDS Healthcare Foundation, Comcast, Our Fund Foundation, Haus Lounge and the Miami Dolphins. South Florida-based Spirit Airlines provided two pairs of tickets to be raffled to donors. SFGN, Hotspots, OutClique, Edge Media Network and Channel Q were media partners. “We’re very grateful to our sponsors for their support of this new and different kind of Pride festival,” commented Miik Martorell, president of Pride Fort Lauderdale. “We also thank the hundreds of viewers who generously donated throughout the broadcast.” All donations collected online or via text message are earmarked to programs and organizations that benefit local residents affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The funds were collected and are being distributed by Wilton Manors-based Our
Fund Foundation. Beneficiaries range from Compass LGBT Community Center programs in Palm Beach County and Survivors Pathways, a Miamibased nonprofit serving residents with food insecurity, to individual grants for workers in the devastated hospitality and tourism industries in Miami and Wilton Manors. Pride Fort Lauderdale will use funds to assemble and distribute boxes of food staples and personal hygiene supplies on Friday, May 22. Julie Seaver, CEO of Compass, summed up the feelings of organizers: “Our (Palm Beach Pride) theme this year was ‘Unity in the Community’ and, having the five Prides together, it just doesn’t get any better than that...we couldn’t have imagined what that togetherness would feel like. Now, all of us are connected in a way we couldn’t have imagined before.” The entire festival will be rebroadcast this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, May 16-17 and donations for COVID-19 relief will continue to be collected. Today’s editorial will be brief. On Tuesday morning, Dr. Fauci was asked by Senator Elizabeth Warren if a vaccine for the coronavirus became available, whether it should be free to everyone. Dr. Fauci avoided answering the question directly, stating that he was simply a scientist, not there to make public policy. The good doctor, who has sworn to a Hippocratic oath to heal the sick, did not have to answer the way he did. He was trying to be politically correct. This is a time instead to be morally outraged and individually courageous. The correct answer for any physician, or any American, should have simply been, “Of course.” Building a bridge that only goes half way across the river does no pedestrian or driver any good. At any cost to the state, as surely as every child gets a polio vaccine, so too should every person entering or living in the U.S. be given the vaccine for the coronavirus, should one ever become available. The virus has proven to be not only lethal, but easily transmissible and very contagious. It has spread globally and become the worst pandemic in a century. Of course, then, at
any cost, any vaccine should be universally accessible, and not just nationally so. Even in CHI-NA, Mr. Trump. Looking at the White House, maybe there too. Sarcasm aside, science and reason dictate ever so obviously that the more who are vaccinated, the less who will get sick. In a world where you can wake up in Michigan at dawn and be in Mykonos in time for its sunset, we should strive for a healthier and safer planet, governed by conscience and life, not boundaries or borders. Correspondingly, the more who are tested, and made aware they are positive, the more cautions they can take so their contagion will not spread to others. The more who traced as having interacted with someone who tested positive, the more prophylactic steps they too can take to diminish the spread of a potentially lethal disease. This is not rocket science. It is common sense, and for our country to survive going forward, we better start selling it cheap on eBay. You sure won’t find a market for it at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C. The Tweetmaster-in-Chief is a delusional mess.
