In a survey of more than a dozen polls, Real Clear Politics projects former Vice President Joe Biden as leading the pack. Real Clear Politics, a Chicago-based aggregator, places Buttigieg at No. 5 with 6.2 percent of support from Democratic voters. Over the holiday weekend as Buttigieg marched in his city’s Memorial Day parade, Fred Karger, the last gay man to campaign for president, called on the Human Rights Campaign to endorse Mayor Buttigieg. “Hey @ChadHGriffin @HRC thought you were going to endorse surging @PeteButtigieg for #POTUS2020 He announced four weeks ago! What are you waiting for Christmas? He needs your help now!” Karger tweeted May 27. In 2012 Karger campaigned for the Republican Party nomination as an openly gay man. Utah Sen. Mitt Romney ultimately won the nomination that cycle. The Human Rights Campaign, of which Chad Griffin presides, claims to be the nation’s largest LGBT civil rights organization. ori Lightfoot made history on Monday when she was inaugurated as mayor of Chicago, making her the first openly gay, black woman to hold the title. Lightfoot, who was joined by her wife Amy Eshleman and 11-year-old daughter Vivian, delivered her inaugural speech to a crowd at Wintrust Arena. “For years, they’ve said Chicago ain’t ready for reform. Well, get ready, because reform is here,” Lightfoot said. “I campaigned on change. You voted for change. And I plan to deliver change to our government.” Lightfoot also vowed to cut down on the corruption in Chicago. “When public officials cut shady backroom deals, they get rich and the rest of us get the bill. When some people get their property taxes cut in exchange for campaign cash, they get the money and … we get the bill,” she said. “These practices have gone on here for decades. … Stopping it isn’t just in the city’s interest. It’s in the City Council’s own

interest,” Lightfoot said. Lightfoot was joined on stage by outgoing Mayor Rahm Emanuel, U.S. Sens. Richard J. Durbin and Tammy Duckworth, Rep. Jesús “Chuy” Garcia, Gov. J.B. Pritzker and former Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley.

Herb Baumeister, a bisexual man, strangled at least 25 men he met in gay bars in the late 80s. Now, you can buy some of the land where he buried his victims’ remains in Westfield, Indiana. Noah Herron, who purchased a plot of land just north of Baumeister’s home, wants to sell three lots and build a home for his family there, according to the Indianapolis Star. He’s bringing his project in front of a public hearing in June, and he’s well aware of the murders.

He said the beauty of the land is too good to pass up. "We asked neighbors around there if they've ever seen ghosts, and they said no. So we're good," Herron said, according to The Star. "I wanted to make a joke at the council meeting and say that we hope we don't find any bones while we're building, but I decided to keep it professional." Baumeister fled to Canada and committed suicide after police began investigating the property in 1996.

More than 60 intersex rights organizations around the world released a letter expressing their “regret” that the World Health Organization called intersex traits “disorders of sex development.” The International Classification of Diseases by the WHO also advocates for unnecessary genital surgeries on intersex individuals, according to the letter. “When performed on individuals without their personal informed consent, human rights defenders and institutions have found these interventions to be

harmful practices and violations of rights to bodily integrity, non-discrimination, equality before the law, privacy, and freedom from torture, ill-treatment, and experimentation,” the groups wrote in the letter. The intersex rights organizations have called on the WHO to reform the code to ensure it doesn’t facilitate the human rights violations and to end medically unnecessary surgeries intended to change a patient’s sex without their informed consent.

Kenya reconfirms laws criminalizing gay sex

India’s first openly gay athlete wants same-sex marriage legalized

Kenya’s high court decided on Friday to uphold laws under the penal code that criminalize gay sex, saying they do not discriminate against the LGBT community. LGBT rights groups filed a petition in 2016 to amend two sections of the penal code: Article 162 which punishes "carnal knowledge ... against the order of nature" with up to 14 years in prison, and Article 165 which penalizes "indecent practices between males" with the possibility of five years in prison, according to NPR. The judges weren’t convinced these laws targeted LGBT people. "Rights cannot be trampled upon in the name of social disapproval. The Court of Appeal should revisit this ruling urgently," Neela Ghoshal, a senior LGBT rights researcher at Human Rights Watch

said, according to NPR. Activists are planning on appealing the court’s decision.

Dutee Chand, 23, is a professional sprinter and India’s first openly gay athlete. Days after coming out to her country, she said she’ll fight for the right to marry her partner, according to Reuters. India scrapped the ban on gay sex last year, but same-sex marriage is still illegal, and Reuters reports that homophobia is still a major problem. “They should know that everyone just wants to live happily,” Chand told Reuters. “People oppose many things in the name of culture and religion ... [but] India is a democratic country and many things change frequently … Any rule which deprives someone of happiness is wrong.” Chand said she didn’t come out on her own accord, but because her sister

Brazil to expand LGBT protections following increased attacks

Rally held in support of gay marriage in Northern Ireland

After self-proclaimed proud homophobe Jair Bolsonaro was elected as Brazilian president, reports of crimes against LGBT people have tripled. On Thursday, Brazil’s highest court took steps to protect LGBT individuals from discrimination, according to the Washington Post. A majority of the court voted to find it unconstitutional to leave sexuality and gender out of Brazil’s antidiscrimination laws. “It is a decisive win for the LGBT community,” Flavio Grossi, a criminal defense lawyer who represents LGBT clients said, according to The Post. “LGBT people are scared. I have seen an increase in clients reporting instances of physical aggression, hate crimes and racism.” Once the sixth person on the

11-member court voted in favor of the protections, the vote was suspended until June 5, when the rest of the court is expected to issue the ruling.

Thousands marched through the city of Belfast last Saturday, demanding same-sex marriage be recognized. Northern Ireland is the only region in the U.K. where gay marriage is not yet legal. Though most people in the region are in favor of gay marriage, attempts to legalize it were blocked by the Democratic Unionist Party, according to Reuters. Sara Canning, the partner of slain journalist and LGBT rights activist Lyra McKee, led the march following her partner’s murder in April. "We pay our taxes, we are governed by the same laws, why should we not be afforded the same rights in marriage," Canning said, according to Reuters. Canning was wearing a T-shirt that said “Love Equality.”

Protestors called on the British Parliament to bypass the Democratic Unionist Party and introduce legislation legalizing gay marriage.

Compass Hosts Prom for LGBT Youth Deon C. Jefferson

The Youth Equality Prom at Compass. Photo via Compass Center, Facebook.

T

o celebrate the fast-approaching end to the school year, Compass hosted its seventh annual Youth Equality Prom. This year's theme was “Galactic Gala.” Prom is one of the most sought-after events for the youth of Compass. “The whole reason we started the prom was because we found out that one of the youth in the program was not allowed to go to prom in a tuxedo or with her same-sex partner,” Amanda Canete, Compass’ youth service director,” said. “It’s amazing how much our prom has grown.” Over 100 high school students from all over Palm Beach County showed up ready to dance the night away, decked out in everything from 3-piece glam-rock tuxedos, classic floor-length ball gowns, light-up skirts, and other space-themed accessories. “I understand that people want to be their true authentic selves; sometimes it could be dangerous, that’s why Compass is so important,” said Elias Anderson, a trans male and recent graduate of A.W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts. “People can come and use Compass as an outlet … people can also come to prom and not worry about fitting in.” Compass hosted many events throughout the year to sponsor the prom, so participants were not charged admission —

“People can come and use Compass as an outlet … people can also come to prom and not worry about fitting in.” - Elias Anderson

and it’s been that way for the past seven years. Some of those fundraising efforts took place at Penny’s at the Duke’s annual chili cook-off, Cocktails for Compass, and the Great Give of Palm Beach and Martin Counties. Plans have already started for the theme and mood for next year. Participants experienced the galactic theme with props like inflatable aliens, flashing lights, a gigantic space shuttle, and more. Outside organizations pitched in resources for the night — members of Haus of QUOTA donated several props to the prom, food and refreshments were provided by Whole Foods, and the DJ was sponsored by TD Bank. Compass recruited local talent to entertain the young crowd — including performers like the Elite Drag Kings, drag queen Velvet Lenore, and members of Haus of QUOTA. This was many people’s first appearance at the Youth Equality Prom — as it was for Pearls Anne Heels, a Haus of QUOTA member.

“I didn’t really attend my prom because I wasn’t really into those type of activities, I didn’t feel like I needed to be a part of it,” they said. “It felt great performing … in my drag persona. If I can say anything to someone that is struggling with being their true authentic stuff at prom, I’d say just go! Show up and show out!” And for the people who weren’t new to the event, the night was something that families and youth were looking forward to. “I think this event is fantastic — I came with my daughter last year. I'm glad that this event is happening, but I’m sorry that it has to happen,” said Pete Stewart, a health education specialist for the Palm Beach County school district. “I hope that our schools are welcoming, and according to their policy, they should be,” Stewart said. “ … I think everybody should be welcomed at their prom, they should wear what they want, go with who they want to go with, and take pictures with whoever they want to take pictures with.”

Compass Youth Group is available for teens ages 12 to 18. For more information on how to donate or join, visit https://compassglcc.com.

always think of my childhood when reflecting on Memorial Day and the three-day weekend it’s become. I was the only one in my immediate family born in the North. We often would go “down home” for Decoration Day. Some of my southernborn blood relatives were not joking when they disdainfully called me a “Yankee.” This American holiday originally honored the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military during the Civil War or the War Between The States (as my relatives would say) – a war that cost more American lives than any other conflict in history. The holiday was later expanded after World War I to honor all U.S. military dead. Meanwhile, some southern states still celebrate and formally recognize a Confederate Memorial Day. Can’t we come together – at least in death? The on-going and deep divisions in our country over race, sexual identity and orientation, abortion, and health care – to name just a few – can produce an unhealthy

cynicism. I feel it myself, but I refuse to give in. My faith won’t yield to despair; because ours is a loving, liberating, and life-giving God. Ours is a God of love, who is love itself, and who became love incarnate for us – all of us. We are created out of love, in love, for love. And it is through love that the world will change for the better. Our Presiding Bishop Michael Curry has famously said, “If it's not about love, then it’s not about God.” We are to love as we are loved. That’s a tall order – to love as Christ loves us. It means we walk with everyone without judgment, striving for peace and harmony, always respecting human dignity. Maybe this is the best way to honor the sacrifice of those who died in uniform. I certainly believe it’s the way to avoid – or, at least, minimize – more deaths. This Memorial Day let’s reject glorification of war, guns, and violence. Let’s instead work and pray for a world in which enemies are made friends through the love we receive from a God who looks upon each and everyone of us as God’s beloved. Happy Memorial Day!

‘The Best Little Boy in the World’ Runs for President

Jesse Monteagudo

I

n 1973, the writer Andrew Tobias published his autobiography, “The Best Little Boy in the World,” under the pen name of John Reid. Tobias was not the first or last gay man who tried to compensate for his sexual orientation by striving to be the best in all his endeavors. Pete Buttigieg, the openly gay mayor of South Bend, Indiana, is another good example of “the best little boy in the world.” In spite of his last name, pronounced “Boot-Edge-Edge,” Mayor Buttigieg has an impressive resume, chronicled in his recently published book “The Shortest Way Home: One Mayor’s Challenge and a Model for America’s Future.” He was a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy Reserve, serving in Afghanistan; a Rhodes scholar at the University of Oxford; a business analyst for a global management consulting firm; and, since 2011, mayor of South Bend, Indiana. As Troy Mallis put it, “Buttigieg is attractive, charismatic, witty, down-toearth and smart as a whip - perfect husband

material.” (But he’s already married.) He is multilingual in a country where most people, including the president, can barely speak one language. All that Buttigieg has left to do is run for president, and as a Democrat. When Mayor Buttigieg announced his candidacy, most pundits put him down as a flash in the pan, soon to be replaced by more “serious” candidates. But Buttigieg has proven to be quite resilient. Public opinion polls have placed the mayor in third place, just behind the old warhorses, Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders. Even Donald Trump, who likes to insult anyone who dares to oppose him, took notice when he called Mayor Buttigieg “Alfred E. Neuman,” after MAD magazine’s cover boy. (There is some resemblance.) On his web page, PeteForAmerica.com, Buttigieg declares that “It’s time for a new generation of American leadership” after decades of misgovernment

by baby boomers like Trump, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton. Though he is only 37, the youngest serious candidate for president — 20-year old Elijah Manley does not count — Buttigieg reminds us that he “has more years of government experience than the president, more years of executive government experience than the vice president, and more military experience than anybody to walk into the Oval Office since President George H. W. Bush.” But even Pete Buttigieg has his faults, which his Democratic opponents were quick to point out. Buttigieg is a butch, white, cisgender male, which should not be held against him but which is reflected by his limited views and by the lack of diversity at his campaign rallies (which are almost, but not quite, as white as the makeup of the Trump rallies). Buttigieg realizes his shortcomings and is trying hard to reach out to AfricanAmericans and other minorities. Mayor

Buttigieg has also been criticized for being long on generalizations and short on specifics, unlike policy wonks like Elizabeth Warren. Finally, there is the fact that Buttigieg is gay, which should not be a detriment but which still is in a largely homophobic country. In any case, voters who hate Buttigieg because he is gay are voting for Trump regardless of his sexual orientation. Like most “best little boys in the world," Buttigieg is happily married. His husband is Chasten Glezman, who changed his last name to Buttigieg and who is famous for his social media accounts. The couple own two rescue dogs, Truman and Buddy, and they plan to have a child someday. Though Buttigieg is in his eighth and final year as mayor of South Bend, Indiana, he has a bright future ahead of him, even if he is not elected president. I look forward to greater achievements rom Buttigieg, “the best little boy in the world.”

he main headline “Loyal Lovers Live Longer” on the cover of The May 8, 2019 Issue of SFGN obscures the importance of a recent HIV study. The study did not show that “loyal lovers lived longer.” It showed that Undetectable equals Untransmissible (U=U). When antiretrovirals suppress HIV, current health is maintained, and transmission becomes impossible. The study said nothing about “loyalty,” or monogamy. The problem lies in the main headline not in the story. The SFGN article referred to a Lancet article about a two-phased study. The first phase, PARTNER 1 enrolled gay male and het couples. All couples had mixedHIV statuses. The second phase, PARTNER 2, only enrolled gay male couples. PARTNER 1 study had too few gay male couples to provide precise estimates of risk. The PARTNER 2 had the goal “to provide precise estimates of transmission risk” in mixed-status gay couples. That Lancet article concluded “that the risk of HIV transmission through anal sex when HIV viral load is suppressed is effectively zero.” It said nothing about partner loyalty or monogamy. In this eight-year study of 782 mixed-status gay male couples, 15 HIV-negative partners did acquire HIV. Researchers compared strains of HIV between the partners. They found no evidence of HIV transmission within the relationship. They inferred sexual contact outside the relationship. The article had no data about whether the couple had an open or closed relationship. If they had an open relationship, “loyalty” becomes an irrelevant concept. More importantly, 288 (37%) of all HIV negative men in the study reported condomless anal sex outside of the relationship. That would mean that 273 men (94.8%) had anal sex outside their relationship without acquiring HIV. Only 15 men (5.2%) acquired HIV outside their relationship. The study proved nothing about the side issues of “loyalty” or monogamy. This study provided more strong support for the Undetectable = Untransmissible (U=U) movement. The larger headline stressed a side issue that the study did not address. If anyone would like to read the full Lancet study, they can visit http://bit. ly/2wef6sp

Trans Talk

My Meta Experience A closer look at surgery

Atticus Ranck

I

n May 2018, I had a hysterectomy and a metoidioplasty. It was one 6.5 hour surgery with three different surgeons. Dr. Kristene Whitmore came in and took out the cervix and uterus, then another doctor came in and removed both fallopian tubes, and finally Dr. Kathy Rumer performed my metoidioplasty, commonly referred to as meta. For those who don’t know, meta is a lower surgery option for people assigned female at birth. Meta is the process of releasing the clitoris from surrounding tissue which increases the length and exposure of the clitoris, which has grown through the use of testosterone. If I had chosen to do just that, it would be known as a simple meta. However, I also chose to have my urethra rerouted through my clitoris. My surgeon took tissue from inside my cheek to help elongate my urethra and then rerouted it through my clitoris. This has allowed me to stand to urinate. If I wanted, I could have also had a vaginectomy which removes all or part of the vagina. I also could have chosen to have scrotal implants to create testicles. The process to get the surgery approved was not easy. At the LGBT Community Center where I work, we have health insurance that is supposed to cover gender affirmation surgeries. I called my health insurance and asked what they required for this surgery. They told me I needed a letter from two different therapists, one of which has to have a Ph.D. and the other from the therapist who originally diagnosed me with having gender dysphoria and suggested hormone replacement therapy (HRT). I also needed a letter from the doctor who is prescribing me my HRT, in addition to the information from the surgeons who would be performing the surgeries. I luckily kept records of all my letters and had the original letter from the therapist who prescribed me HRT, but I didn’t have a letter from a Ph.D.-level therapist. I knew a therapist with a Ph.D. because of my connections through work so she was willing to just meet with me one time to write the letter and only

billed me my copay. I’m privileged in this way because many trans people don’t know trans-competent therapists, and if they can find them, they often want multiple sessions before they’ll write the letter. If they find one, their insurance may not cover it and they can't afford to pay them out of pocket or they may have to travel long distances to see them. I sent in all the paperwork and a few weeks later, I get a denial letter from my insurance company in the mail stating that they won’t cover the surgery because the therapist who originally wrote me my letter didn’t have a master’s degree at the time she wrote the letter. This was not true. I was also privileged in that I still was in contact with this therapist, so I called her, and got her to send me her resume as well as the resume

of her qualifying supervisor. I wrote a letter appealing their denial and sent it in with the resumes. A few weeks later, I was approved for surgery. Following the surgery, I received the Explanation of Benefits in the mail from my insurance company. Besides copays, I didn’t have to pay anything out of pocket. There’s no other way I could have afforded it because it cost $241,000. Dealing with therapists, surgeons, and insurance companies isn’t easy. There’s a lot of bureaucracy to deal with. Nevertheless, even with a post-surgical complication I’m finally at the tail-end of dealing with, I would still do it all over again. Hopefully, these surgeries become better and more affordable for all the trans guys out there still waiting and hoping for their day.

The Ar t of Health: A Unique Approach to Healthcare in South Florida For a lot of people, going to the doctor usually happens only when something is “wrong” and typically involves a long wait just to be hurried through a quick appointment. It’s common for people to leave the doctor’s office with a prescription (or referral to another doctor) and a chip on their shoulder. At Osteopathic Medical Arts Center (OMAC) of South Florida, however, the healing process begins the moment you walk through the doors. A state-of-the-art facility and a welcoming staff elicit a sense of comfort and calm so that patients can feel relaxed when they are with their treating doctor. “Everything is connected to health,” says Dr. Gardere, founder of OMAC and doctor of osteopathic medicine (D.O.). He knows that a relaxed nervous system is fundamental to restoring health and bringing the body, mind and spirit back into balance.

Dr. Gardere founded OMAC with the view that a person’s health and well-being is greater than the sum of their parts. Unlike most medical doctors (M.D.), practitioners at OMAC spend a significant amount of time in the initial consultation with a patient, to get to know them and their physical, mental and emotional health. “It’s like how a painter would never look only at a single tree to paint an entire landscape,” says Dr. Gardere. “You need to study the whole picture to be able to see how all elements flow in harmony with one another.” Osteopathic medicine was founded in the late 19th century by Dr. Andrew Taylor Still, an American physician who believed sincerely in the body’s innate ability to heal itself. Rather than focusing only on addressing individual symptoms or ailments in isolation, the practice of Osteopathic Medicine seeks to optimize how the whole system of the body functions—from

muscles and bones to the organs and systems. With the distinction of being a neuromusculoskeletal specialist, Dr. Gardere’s expertise lies in manually restoring function in the body by applying gentle manipulations with his hands. Rather than focusing only on the affected parts of the body, neuromuscular manipulations are intended to restore whole body wellness and balance. Practitioners at OMAC are not just focused on achieving health where it was once lost, but on keeping people healthy in the long term.

study and treat the body to restore function and reduce pain.

Many patients who come to Dr. Gardere find themselves in severe chronic pain. They have seen doctors, chiropractors, orthopedic surgeons, and even neurosurgeons, in the hopes of finding relief. More often than not, they are prescribed pain-killers and sent home. At OMAC, patients that suffer from these conditions will find practioners who

For Dr. Gardere and the leaders in the field who came before him, osteopathic medicine is about much more than just fixing a problem. It’s about restoring total health and wellness, and that starts by seeing the whole person and how they move through life. “By restoring function, you restore life,” he says.

“By restoring function, you restore life.” Dr. Serge Gardere

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (May 9, 2019) – Men Having Babies (MHB) is a non-profit organization, led by parents and surrogates, that has helped thousands of gay men worldwide become biological parents since 2012. The Florida conference (menhavingbabies.org/florida) is one of eight annual conferences held by MHB worldwide, with other conferences taking place in New York, San Francisco, Brussels, Chicago, Taipei, Toronto and Tel Aviv. Responding to popular demand, for the first time the 2019 conference will offer prospective single fathers a unique opportunity to hear from gay fathers who’ve gone through the surrogacy journey without a partner, and meet like-minded prospective fathers. “Even more than previous years, this event draws people from far beyond Florida,” said Ron Poole-Dayan, Executive Director of Men Having Babies. “More than half of those who have already registered are gay men from 13 states, Latin America, and even Europe.” “The internet is flooded with people trying to push surrogacy information, but it was hard to know what is credible, or where to start,” said Poole-Dayan. “The twoday events, which are held across the United States, Europe, Canada and Asia, offer an immersive experience, a combination of a ‘boot camp’ and a community event which cannot be done online,” he said. The conference includes a panel discussion comprised of gay surrogacy dads and the surrogates who helped them in their journeys. Two workshops will be offered on planning the surrogacy journey, based upon the accumulated knowledge of hundreds of gay men who have already gone through the process. Other sessions will cover the latest studies about gestational surrogacy, and insurance, budgeting, legal, medical and psychological aspects of surrogacy. “Our conferences are not meant to persuade to become parents ... they are meant for people who already want to become parents (and) to make the process more accessible
