Poll Reveals Almost Half of LGBT Community is Bisexual
Leah Remini Will Play Conservative Lesbian in TV Pilot
Bisexual Pride Flag
Leah Remini via Twitter
Leah Remini is going to take on the role of a right-leaning lesbian in a new Fox television pilot. The unnamed pilot would star the “King of Queens” actor, according to Entertainment Weekly. The show will be written and executively produced by Rob McElhenney and Rob Rosell of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.” Glenn Howerton, star Charlie Day
and executive producer Nick Frenkel from “Always Sunny” also have executive producer credits. The show will feature Remini raising her two children along with her partner, while her ex-husband lives in their garage. The pilot is part of an effort by Fox to garner more conservative eyes to the network.
A Buzzfeed poll has given insight into how many bisexuals make up the LGBT community. The publication reported 46 percent of LGBT people in their poll were bisexual, according to Out. That differs from the Pew Research Center’s 2013 findings, which said 43 percent of the community was bisexual. “...The poll’s starkest finding: Nearly half — 46% — of the LGBTQ population
identifies as bisexual, which then skews heavily female, younger, and tends to be more racially diverse,” Buzzfeed wrote. “People who identify their orientation as queer, asexual, or self-described make up 6% of participants.” Around 880 LGBT people were polled in this particular study. The poll also found that nearly half of LGBT people identified as Christian and a fourth of LGBT people did not have sex in the last year.

Queensland Removes Law Requiring Transgender People to Divorce
Yvette D’Ath via Facebook
An Australian state changed an old law which forced transgender people to divorce their current partner during their transition. Queensland officials chose to amend the previous law in a parliamentary meeting, according to The Guardian. People who are transitioning can now apply to change their birth certificate without divorcing their spouse.
“This is not a cost or a consequence any law of this state should impose on members of our community,” the state’s attorney-general Yvette D’Ath said. “It has been unjust and unfair and I’m proud to say this distressing choice will no longer be a requirement in Queensland.” The law change comes as Queensland reviews some of the more conservative laws from the state’s past.

Stonewall Festival a Resounding Success 40,000 revelers come out for Pride
Damon Scott
I
t was a big night for a big event: the “Wilton Manors Stonewall Pride Parade & Festival” June 16 held up and down the Wilton Drive corridor. This was the 19th annual event – one in which The Drive is transformed into a gigantic Pride celebration – stretching from end to end with exhibitors, entertainment, food, drink and Pride-goers of every stripe from across the U.S. and internationally. Jeff Sterling, the CEO of Wilton Manors Entertainment Group, said the crowd estimate was 40,000, a little higher than last year. He said that overall, from the perspective of attendees, the event went smoothly. “Change is tough,” Sterling said. “And we started charging $5 at the entrances this year. But if anyone complained, we let them in for free,” he said. The admission fee was put in place to defer the increasing costs of security and logistics for an event of its type and size, Sterling said, especially following the tragedy at the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando in 2016. Sterling said he was unaware of any major security-related incidents that took place at the event. “The medical lines were a little more active than last year from heat-related incidents,” he said. Indeed the afternoon was a hot one at times, and some marching in the parade tossed bottles of water to those in the crowd, some were shielding their faces from the sun with paper fans of the rainbow flag. Sterling’s group, which is a nonprofit partnership with the city of Wilton Manors and the Wilton Manors Development Alliance, prepared extensively with

volunteers to secure the streets, set up tents for exhibitors and make sure everyone had a great time. Businesses were hopping along the corridor, serving food and drink specials. And there was entertainment up and down “The Drive,” with DJs, performers and crowds of dancers. The parade The centerpiece and unofficial kick-off was the parade – a colorful spectacle featuring what seemed like every political candidate up for election (or not) this year in Florida, including Democratic Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz and the newly elected and openly gay mayor of Fort Lauderdale Dean Trantalis. Gubernatorial hopeful Phil Levine was glad-handing the crowd and many businesses were represented – from the local, like Ramrod, Out-of-the-Closet Thrift Stores and Crunch Fitness, to the national, like Target and Wells Fargo. Several local nonprofits were marching and on floats as well, like The Pride Center at Equality Park, the Bears of South Florida, Latinos Salud, the United Church of Christ Fort Lauderdale and the Ramat Shalom Synagogue, among many others. And like at Stonewall, there were plenty of drag queens to be seen. Queens were roaming the crowds and riding the floats in the parade, and of course, performing. The partying went on into the evening and the consensus among most festival goers was that it went off without a hitch – a big accomplishment for a city of 13,000 hosting upwards of 40,000 guests.

he World Health Organization is no longer listing transgender identities as mental illnesses. The change by the United Nations organization will prevent the transgender identity from being used as grounds for conversion therapy or other treatments, according to a press release. The change is being listed in the new online version of the International Classification of Diseases. According to CNN, the International Classification of Diseases is a standardized diagnosis tool that is used by doctors, researchers and insurance professionals to identify diseases and other conditions. “This is the result of tremendous effort by trans and gender diverse activists from around the world to insist on our humanity, and I am elated that the WHO agrees that gender identity is not a mental illness,” executive director of Transgender Europe Julia Ehrt said. Transgender identities can now be found
in the guide under the conditions related to sexual health. All mentions of the condition as a mental health issue have been removed from the mental health section. Other changes to the 11th version of the guide included the addition of video game addiction as a mental health condition.

that gay men and women do not love sports. It’s more than the dollar that counts, though. When a pro sports team markets to the gay community, they are also sending a message to every jock that ever made a locker room joke about “fags” that “Gay is OK.” That matters a lot to us. As the LGBT community has grown here in the Sunshine State, we have seen also the emergence of diverse LGBT leagues, from ice hockey to flag football teams. One of the benefactors of the Stonewall entry fee was the community’s own Gold Coast Derby Girls. The sports enthusiasm of the LGBT community has been heralded in SFGN. We have done front-page features on our gay swimming teams, bowling leagues and the international gay Olympics. For the past 20 years or longer, Fort Lauderdale has sponsored the “Hurricane Showdown,” a nationally accredited gay softball tournament every Thanksgiving. The gay community is not composed of wimps. My god, we even play Polo! Heck, my business partner for this newspaper disappeared from the offices the moment World Cup play started last week.
We got money. We love sports. We go to games. Sports teams should be reaching out to us religiously, preferably without a Bible in their hands. The bottom line is that gays play ball. The NBA and NHL know this so well, and lead the professional sports leagues in outreach to the gay community. They wisely recognize the value of our support, the discretionary dollars we have to spend, and the enthusiasm we can generate for their local franchises. Some day, Lewis Brinson will be a star. We want to be there when he is. It takes time to build from the ground up. The gay community understands those challenges. Derek Jeter, we can make that happen here. Just hire me to announce a few games for the next few years. Actually, better than me announcing Marlins games, it would be nicer if Major League Baseball expanded its diversity initiative to create a national Gay Pride Night in every ballpark on the same, single night. That would be a marketing home run for the LGBTQ community. I won’t even require every team to wear a rainbow uniform, but what a national festival of colors that would be!

Off The Wall
Asocial Media
Pier Angelo
A
round the world, Facebook and other social networking platforms are facing backlash over their failures to safeguard privacy, combat disinformation and curtail the digital reach of hate groups. At least a dozen designated terror groups have a presence on FB, as shown by a review conducted by Bloomberg Business Week. Among them Hezbollah, Hamas, Islamic State, al-Qaeda, and Boko Haram. They can simply be found by typing their names into FB’s search bar either in English, Spanish, or conveniently, in Arabic. Many of these groups proudly link their FB pages on their home websites. And even when FB takes down one of the sites they quickly reappear with tweaks to make them seem new. Social media has become a receptacle of hate. Everyone is against everyone else, everyone is complaining about the other group and everyone is saying the same horrible things. It is a basket of deplorables. The phrase #DeleteFacebook has flooded social media, and for the first time daily user counts are falling and the time spent on the site plummeted by 50 million hours a day. Years ago FB was a novelty. It is becoming ubiquitous and mundane for many, it has reached critical mass, and Twitter’s only claim to fame is Trump’s daily garbage spewing. Private, locked, exclusive, restricted to paying or recommended members only, alternative social media networks are popping up all over. Can they still be called “social” if they are open only to an elite? Sounds like an oxymoron but that’s what they are. Here are a few:
1. RichKids: for 1,000 Euros a month ($1,200) it is the 4. VERO: another private social network for a limited social network for those spoiled kids who love to post pictures number of chosen friends. There are also private socials for newly engaged couples and for new parents but those are limited to a very small numbers of contacts. These are the seeds of a digital revolution. Like many other fads Facebook is losing its “coolness.” Its hold and monopoly are beginning to disintegrate, Social Media is becoming extremely fragmented, and the trend is to stand out from the herd. With all this “we are more connected” technology, we will be even more apart. Asocial Media is here to stay.

Forrest Shearin Was An Unsung Hero in Palm Beach County
He will be forever known as a founding father of Compass

hen it comes to charitable organizations, the donors who give the most are frequently the most unassuming. There’s no more apt example than the one set by Forrest Shearin, who passed away just a few days short of his 91st birthday in May. He served as Compass’ Coming Out Support Group Facilitator, a program he developed because of need, and while never accepting compensation – not a dime – he helped thousands of youth and adults, giving them his full attention and his valued time. Forrest gave himself to Compass one night every week for more than 20 years. With near perfect attendance, he drove from Broward to wherever Compass was located that specific year, arriving Thursday night around 6 p.m.; well before his group was set to start. He always came in early just in case someone through the week was encouraged to meet him one-on-one before group. The group’s name reveals its aim to provide a safe atmosphere to people “coming out” who wished to address topics related to sexual orientation or gender identity by sharing and listening to experiences of peers under Forrest’s guidance and supervision. The need for such a group seems so straightforward now, almost much too simple. However, in the context of the 20 years of history through which Forrest kept the group alive, he was a pioneer-volunteer when he began a support group in [the] late 1990’s, while the AIDS epidemic was peaking in popularity as the “inevitable” fate for those who embraced their homosexuality. The idea that anyone would seek support in outing themselves to their friends, family or anyone - in the hopes of being accepted - was pretty much in its infancy.
At the time Congress was passing regressive laws to keep government recognition of same-sex relationships from ever coming to fruition, throwing virtual closets over men and women in uniform fighting for our country, and upholding laws still criminalizing sodomy disproportionately aimed to harm those bold enough to identify as gay or lesbian. And as far as gender identity, our own community wasn’t leaping to embrace gender non-conformity anytime soon – especially gay men of Forrest’s own demographic - gay, white, men over 50. So why such passion, and how did he maintain even up to his final days? As his lifetime partner told me earlier this week, “it wasn’t what Forrest did or how he did it – it’s just who he was.” To us he was the consummate contributor as he donated his time weekly, along with his expertise as a clinical psychologist, regularly paid to attend fundraising events, made annual contributions and directed his friends to do the same, always accepting “thank you” as enough for his generosity. However, with the help of his life partner and his many friends, Compass overruled his modesty and dedicated the Forrest Shearin Coming Out Room to memorialize the special place where he gave what he had and where he shared his wisdom with us all, for as long as he was able. If you’ve ever met Forrest and had the privilege to see how gently he wielded such a positive influence onto others, his partner’s modest statement speaks directly to integrity so magnanimous it was unavoidably contagious. “It’s just who he was,” is the most accurate description of how he helped so many - for those needing his wise and gentle blue eyes to help them see their path,
His teachings infused into the DNA of Compass’ character and laid the foundation that is the architecture of Compass’ mission to this day.

or for those who’d simply lost their way and could return weekly to his voice. The gift in Forrest was present in such abundance it filled every cup to the rim. He oozed authenticity, and for people dedicated to being true to themselves and others, that unique light within him imbued both the hopeful and hopeless with the will to accept oneself with such drive and determination, they’d grow to expect nothing less from anyone else. To understand just how unique Forrest’s life experience became, just consider that only a handful of people who have ever walked this planet can claim to have met such a diverse array of persons. People of all ages who spoke intimately of their life experience and of finding pride in their distinct sexual orientations or the innate gender expressions known only to them as individuals – it was Forrest they turned to, becoming more fearless on their journey. Over the course of 20 years, from age 70 to 90, he would share what he learned with Compass’ staff, volunteers and with me
during quieter moments when something moved him or he thought might move us. In turn Compass institutionalized his teachings year over year. As a result he grew far beyond the volunteer-pioneer he was when I met him my very first night. His teachings infused into the DNA of Compass’ character and laid the foundation that is the architecture of Compass’ mission to this day. On Father’s Day we celebrated his life in the same home he opened occasionally during renovations to keep his group alive and available for those in need during construction delays. Although he never had children of his own, his home was filled with those of us who respected him and saw him for what he was for Compass and the community. He was not a father biologically, but he will universally be revered as a Founding Father to the Compass family. I’ve said every community needs a Compass, but every Compass needs a Forrest too. He was and always will be a foundation because that’s “just who he was.”

He said he’d been in contact with Wilton Manors Chief of Police Paul O’Connell, who encouraged him to continue to make the complaints so there was an ongoing record of them. “My understanding is that the city is meeting with the Pride Center to find some common ground,” Dreger said. “Our patience is running thin over here … now taxpayer dollars are going to be used to defend the city of Wilton Manors on the appeal, from an illegal and unlicensed business located in the city,” he said. By Sal Torre This past week here in Wilton Manors has left me worn out and ready to get some rest. Hopefully any photos taken of me will not be too harsh, since I looked a bit ragged by the time I got home Saturday night. The festivities started on Thursday evening with the city’s Kick0ff Party at Hagen Park Community Center. The event was very well attended by local elected officials along with volunteers from our city and from the Wilton Manors Entertainment Group. Good food and drink were supplied by Beefcakes Grille, thanks to Victor Zepka and his wonderful staff. Community members Anthony Logrande and Claudia Castillo were honored for their amazing commitment to our Island City. The awards were presented by Vice Mayor Justin Flippen, who did a great job presiding over the festivities. Friday it was on to The Manor for the official Friday Night Stonewall Pride Party held in new Crystal Ballroom. Let me say that this new addition to The Manor is just fabulous. Great job Paul Hugo! The show was billed as “Our Night Out” An LGBTQ Arts Celebration. Headlined by Monet X Change of Ru Paul’s Drag Race fame, the show did not disappoint and neither did Miss Monet. Unfortunately, not being a lady of leisure, I had early wake-ups each morning, a full work schedule, and a week of dog sitting to deal with between all the festivities. By the end of my work shift on Saturday, I could have easily come up with an excuse to stay home and not march in the parade. Thankfully, I decided to haul myself out to Wilton Drive by 4 p.m. as promised for the parade line-up. Seeing the Drive packed with people is always a wonderful sight. Seeing the parade staging area so full of volunteers, parade marchers, floats and many good friends instantly put me in a reinvigorated mood. On the parade route, the mise-en-scene before us was one of colorful banners, happy faces, festive music, and a seemingly endless human corridor of rainbow-beaded revelers welcoming us further and further along as we marched down Wilton Drive. Marching behind our city’s elected officials were two U.S. Congressional members, Ted Deutch and Debbie Wasserman Shultz along with State Senator Gary Farmer. I also spotted our Broward County Commissioner, Tim Ryan, greeting revelers. Mayor Dean Trantalis of Fort Lauderdale and many officials from the City of Oakland Park joined in the festivities. Local residents Paul Rolli, candidate for Wilton Manors City Commission, and David Walker, candidate for statewide Commissioner of Agriculture and Consumer Affairs, took part along with many of their supporters from the community. Various service organizations, area businesses, and social organizations had a large presence. The dreaded afternoon thundershowers stayed away, and the parade goers moved on to enjoying a wonderful evening of celebrating Pride in our great Island City. Many thanks to the Wilton Manors Entertainment Group for their endless dedication and year-long efforts to make this wonderful event possible. Their efforts, along with those of so many others, make this event better and better each year. Unfortunately, last week we lost a fierce advocate for LGBT rights, a great chef and a fellow Culinary Institute of America alumnus, Anthony Bourdain. His roguish culinary adventures and his tellall book, Kitchen Confidential, launched him to almost cult-like reverence to many, like myself, in the culinary field. Bourdain’s suicide, along with that of designer Kate Spade, serves as a harsh

Anthony Bourdain via Facebook reminder of the destructive power of depression and other mental health issues for so many in our community. In the spirit of Pride celebrations this month, the LGBT community needs to demonstrate a strong acceptance of mental health problems in the same way we would about our sexuality or gender identity. Please seek help if you are experiencing depression, anxiety or any kind of addiction. Actively encourage others to seek help and work to promote an environment that fosters a sense of community and understanding. SunServe, Broward House, and many other local organizations are ready to assist. In closing, I leave you with Anthony Bordain’s words from a 2014 Human Rights Campaign video as part of its Americans for Marriage Equality campaign, “I’ve met many people in my life, all over the world and a common thread that people I admire whoever they are, are people wo are proud to do things with love and feel a sense of responsibility to others. What sensible person would be against that? The desire to love and to commit to another human being- these are virtues. It’s why we need nationwide marriage equality now.” Thank you, Anthony Bordain for making life more entertaining, more honest, so much more delicious, and just better for so many others. WMG

Real Estate
Buy? Or Lease? By James Oaksun Well, folks… it is Story Hour. And Daddy James (I am writing this on Father’s Day, after all), is going to deliver an impassioned “Reading.” There are certain things that keep me awake at night. (No, not those sorts of things. Not any more, anyway.) One of them is real estate valuation, and delivering the best information I can to my clients and to all of you. It goes without saying that we have had a great run of real estate prices since the market hit a trough in mid-2011. As I have written before, prices in most neighborhoods have doubled. In some locales (such as where I live), they have tripled. Now, what does all that have to do with the topic of today’s Reading? Well, often you hear members of my profession (and I think, at our best, it is a profession) discuss how it is much better to buy a home than to rent. Typically they will cite information from the National Association of Realtors in support of this assertion. My question – and one I will be considering in more depth in the next few weeks – is whether
that is always true, across all geographies, and all property types. My focus since I entered the profession has been single family homes in select neighborhoods. I will concentrate my research there. But for now, let me make some general observations – really hypotheses that my initial work seem to bear out. First, as I have said here many times before, all real estate valuation is hyper-local. Certainly presentations from NAR that may be applicable in Missouri, may not be relevant to the Florida market. Even more discretely, observations for central Florida or the Panhandle may not work here in the southeastern part of the state. Second, recent changes in the tax law (remember that big tax cut that just passed?) may well make assertions about the preference of purchase less valid. (I must say that even though I have an MBA and was also once awarded a Chartered Financial Consultant designation, I am not a tax accountant, and strongly advise people to consult an accountant for assessment of their personal situations.) With changes in the standard

deduction and limitations on certain popular deductions, previous rules of thumb may not work for everybody. The most important thing has to do with where in the pricing cycle we find ourselves. Typically the buy-versus-lease assessments I have seen assume that real estate is fairly valued and that prices will increase at some constant amount over a certain time frame. Now, I get in trouble with many people when I suggest that certain types of properties in certain areas may be overvalued. But as many remember, over-valuation has happened in our market before, and not that long ago. In a highly leveraged transaction (which would describe most real estate purchases where a buyer borrows more money than they use as a down payment), any significant

reduction in valuation could make you upside down (and not in the good way). Still, my hypothesis remains that, in certain circumstances, for most people, buying is a better bet than leasing. I believe this statement is most likely true over the intermediate and long term… but probably not in the short run. However, there are things you can do to tip the odds more in your favor. More on this topic in a future column. WMG James Oaksun, Florida’s Real Estate Geek(SM), is Broker-Owner of New Realty Concepts in Oakland Park. Gazette Hires Veteran Reporter Sallie James to Cover Wilton Manors She takes over for Michael d’Oliveria
Check out what’s happening
Around Town By Michael d’Oliveira
By Staff The Gazette has hired Sallie James, a veteran reporter, to take over for Michael d’Oliveria, who was recently hired as the new Editor in Chief of the Pelican. James has decades of experience covering municipal government. In the past she’s worked for the Sun Sentinel and Palm Beach Post. She currently freelances for multiple publications, is a blogger for the automotive industry, and a writer for Miami Jewish Health. “While we are sad to see Michael leave us, we are excited to bring Sallie on board,” said SFGN Executive Editor Jason Parsley. “Her experience covering local government is perfect for the Gazette. We’ve already discussed new ways to broaden our coverage.” James will start later this month. WMG

Gazette Launches Community Facebook Group By WMG Staff The Wilton Manors Gazette recently launched a Facebook group to keep readers up to date with the latest happenings and news in the city and to distinguish itself from its parent company, South Florida Gay News. “What started out as a supplement to SFGN has really taken on a life of its own. Because of that we felt the Gazette needed a voice of its own, separate and apart from SFGN,” said Publisher Norm Kent. “We realize there is a community here in Wilton Manors that does not necessarily want all of SFGN’s news, from around South Florida and the world, so the Gazette will focus on just hyper local news.” By targeting just the Wilton Manors community SFGN’s staff will be able to highlight even more relevant news, stories and events geared towards locals. For instance, the city recently stopped live streaming its commission meetings over concerns about a lawsuit happening elsewhere in the state.
The Gazette decided to start uploading the meetings to its YouTube page and posting a link to it in its Facebook group so readers will still be able to have easy access to the city’s meetings. In another hyper local example the Gazette recently assigned a photographer to capture the city’s annual canoe race. An event like that would not appeal to the broader SFGN audience and so the Gazette would not have assigned it. But the Facebook group gives the Gazette a place to highlight local events such as the canoe race. “We hope this Facebook group will provide a new way for readers and residents to interactive with our newspaper and their community,” Kent said. Flippen presents Harvey Milk book to library, Stonewall At the June 12 Wilton Manors Commission meeting, Vice Mayor Justin Flippen presented the Wilton Manors Library and the Stonewall Library & Archives each with a copy of “Pride: The Story of Harvey Milk” and The Rainbow Flag. Flippen said he wants the books to be read by children “to give them hope and to remind them that these colors mean that you are welcome in Wilton Manors and beyond.” Flippen also talked about the inscription Wilton Manors resident Stuart Milk, the nephew of Harvey Milk, wrote which described the pride and hope the rainbow flag gives to LGBT individuals. Award renamed for Skip Stadnik A month after his death, the Community Spirit Award has been renamed in honor of Skip Stadnik by the Community Affairs Advisory Board [CAAB]. A longtime volunteer with his now widow, Ruthanne, Stadnik died in May at age 84 and was a member of CAAB. Resident Kat Campbell celebrated the decision in a Facebook post. “What a great move. I didn’t have the pleasure to get to know Skip personally but his work and energy is everywhere in this city. Ruthanne Stadnik thank you for sharing him with our city.” According to the city, “Community Spirit Awards recognize one outstanding volunteer and one business in Wilton Manors for exemplary volunteer service.” At a city commission meeting in May, community activist and former CAAB chair, Michael Rajner, called for the award to be renamed in Stadnik’s honor. hen most people think of mediums, an iconic scene from M. Night Shyamalan’s thriller “The Sixth Sense” usually comes to mind: 11-year-old Haley Joel Osment peeks from behind the covers in his darkened bedroom and tells Bruce Willis his secret, “I see dead people.” For real-life medium, Tyler Henry Koelewyn, the star of E!’s hit show “Hollywood Medium,” the experience of communicating with souls on the other side is much more subtle than “Hollywood” would have us believe. “It’s not like ‘The Sixth Sense,’ but thought readings can still be intense. I mediate while sitting across from a person and notice any changes in my body, my emotions. It’s about being able to pick up the subtle signals and interpret them,” he said in a telephone interview. The 22-year-old has honed his abilities with practice. “As I’ve gotten older, it’s gotten easier. It was a lot more difficult to shut off, but that was because I didn’t understand what it was and how it worked. I (can) work during the day and I can relax at night and sleep,” he explained. This weekend, Henry will treat South Florida audiences to the same types of paranormal readings that he offers celebrities on his television show. During the first portion, he will focus on the profound life lessons he’s gleaned over the years bridging the worlds of the living and the dead. Then he will venture into the audience, where he will
share readings and answer questions. “I never have any control over who comes through, I’m like a mailman, I just deliver a message,” Henry said. “Even if I’m not able to connect with a particular person, I can sometimes get a sense of their energy, their health.” As he continues his national tour, he has found every audience to be different. “What I’ve loved about this work is that every single person is inherently unique, but we’re looking for the same things, clarity, closure and insight and validation for people,” Henry said. Henry, who is also openly gay, said his gift helped him to come out and to assist others who may be struggling with how their loved ones—both living and departed—might react. “Love is love. Love is a force. Those on the other side never come through angry or judgemental. In any form, they acknowledge the importance of that being,” he said. “Early on I realized I had to be true to who I was. It’s one thing be a medium, another thing to be of my (sexual) orientation. I realized the importance, I had to come out of a couple of closets, both were not that different, but they were.” In the ways of love, Henry’s gift has definitely been helpful. “I’ve been in a relationship for over a year. My abilities help me navigate this world (and find) who is meant for me. It’s helped with all of my relationships,” he concluded.
“Hollywood Medium” star Tyler Henry will appear at the Hard Rock Events Center in Hollywood on Saturday, June 23 at 8 p.m. Tickets start at $40 at MyHRL.com.

Pose cast and crew at LA Pride via Facebook
‘Pose’ is Worth Watching David-Elijah Nahmod
F
or years the transgender community has bemoaned the fact that most trans characters in film and on television are played by cisgender actors. Not so with FX’s daring and groundbreaking new series “Pose” in which MJ Rodriguez, a transgender woman, plays a leading role. Rodriguez is one of several trans women who’ve been cast on “Pose.” The series comes to television courtesy of Ryan Murphy (“Glee,” “American Horror Story,” “Feud,” “Versace.”) “Pose” may be the first time in history that transgender women’s lives are presented authentically. In addition to its trans friendly cast, the series has two trans women, Janet Mock and Our Lady J, serving as part of the show’s writing team. Lady J, who is also a producer on “Pose,” previously worked on Amazon’s Emmy winning “Transparent.” “Pose” is set in New York City in 1987. The story focuses on the juxtaposition between Manhattan’s uptown ball culture and the rise of the Trump-era luxury lifestyle. The ball culture is, for many African American and Latinx Queers, the only place where they can find community and acceptance. It’s in this world that they create “houses,” families of choice who live together and compete together at balls for trophies in a variety of drag categories, often emulating people in higher social classes than themselves. The balls can be a highly competitive and cutthroat world. As the story begins, Blanca (Rodriguez) learns that she is HIV positive. Determined to make her mark on the world while she still can, Blanca forms a new house and becomes its “mother.” The first member of this new household is Damon (Ryan Jamaal Swain), a homeless gay African American teenager who wants to be a professional dancer. The second member of the house is Angel (trans actress Indya Moore), a wise, weary prostitute who becomes involved with Stan (Evan Peters) a suburban married father who works for Donald Trump. James Van Der Beek plays Stan’s boss Matt, a slime ball and
close associate of Trump—this character has been said to be based on Trump. The first two episodes of “Pose” beautifully illustrate how close-knit the ball culture families are. Most members of ball culture houses have been rejected by their birth families--they become for each other what their birth families should have been. Blanca takes her “children” under her wing, pushing them to do more with their lives. In one powerful scene, she visits a prestigious school and convinces the Dean Of Dance to give Damon an audition. “And who are you?” asks the dean. “I’m his mother,” said Blanca. Damon is accepted into the school. In another scene, after Damon is asked out on a date, Blanca sits down and offers him some frank advice about safe sex. Blanca is a strong character, tough as nails but with a heart of gold. She resents the fact that trans women are refused service at gay bars and takes it upon herself to buck the system. Night after night she walks into a gay bar and demands to be served a drink. After being told that she’s a drag queen--Blanca insists that she’s a woman--she’s physically thrown out of the bar. She returns the next night, only to find herself in jail. Bar patrons applaud as she’s led away in handcuffs. These are but some of the many powerful moments in “Pose.” The series serves as a reminder of how transgender women and people of color have been traditionally treated by the mainstream gay community. The characters in “Pose” have been shaken, but they are not stirred. They’ve accepted the cards that life has dealt them and have held onto their dignity. Though critically lauded--Rotten Tomatoes, a review aggregation website, lists “Pose” as having a 95% approval rating--the ratings have been low. Only 700,000 people tuned in for the pilot. But it’s not too late to catch up with “Pose,” as the first three episodes remain available for viewing On Demand and at the FX website. We hope you will check out this wonderful new series. Future episodes can be seen Sunday nights on FX.

he premise of Michael McKeever’s world premiere play at Island City Stage is fairly straightforward: A middleaged man, who recently lost his longtime partner, wakes up one morning next to the hunky 28-year-old he picked up after a night of grief-fueled drinking at the local gay bar. Plenty of Millennial jokes abound as Justin (Samuel Maya) nonchalantly parades naked around the studio loft that Terry Parker, also played by McKeever, shared with his former partner and husband of 30 years, Jeffrey. But the audience quickly realizes there’s much more to the story than the booze-induced hook-up and the sexy pillow talk to follow. Terry, it turns out, put his own writing career on hold decades earlier as his artist husband began to find fame and fortune among Manhattan’s elite. With just one novel under his belt, Terry jettisoned his own aspirations to become the supportive and devoted partner. After Jeffrey is left on life support after a tragic automobile accident, Terry refused to let go for days and, after finally giving his consent, found himself in a similar state for seven months. That is, until the night he meets Justin. But, Terry’s story is as much about coping with his middle age as it is about heart wrenching grief over the loss of a loved one. How could a muscular, good-looking young stud like Justin be interested in him, he wonders. What could the attraction be and why does he keep coming back? It’s Cassie (Margot Moreland), Jeffrey’s
brassy sister and business manager, who has the answers Terry simply doesn’t want to hear. Some of the play’s most powerful moments occur as Cassie challenges Terry to just get over it and move on—both to the dalliance with “the child” and his emotional paralysis following Jeffrey’s death. Any sort of détente seems impossible. Moreland and McKeever give powerful performances, thanks to the playwright’s searing dialogue and the deft direction of Michael Leeds. Maya is noticeably inexperienced—especially in the company of these particular costars—and struggles at times with the most nuanced scenes, but always manages to deliver the critical oneliners that lend this comic drama the most laughs. And, he’s gutsy enough to show off his very best assets on stage. Also notable is the handsome set design by Ardean Landhuis. The intimate Abyss Theatre was transformed into a chic ‘80s Manhattan artist’s loft with exposed brick walls and heavy wooden beams, a smudged skylight and tiny kitchen. Like McKeever’s 2016 award-winning gay marriage drama “Daniel’s Husband,” “Mr. Parker” struck a nerve with Island City Stage’s mature, gay male audience. Many remember those days in New York, some have lost a longtime partner, and still others have found themselves in May-December romances. Expect to see similar productions at other LGBTQ-centric theaters across the country as word spreads about this hit new play.
Island City Stage presents the world premiere production of Michael McKeever’s “Mr. Parker” through July 15 at the Abyss Theatre, 2304 N. Dixie Hwy. in Wilton Manors. Tickets are $35 at IslandCityStage.org.
