CORRECTION Last week, in the story "Fans Want to #GiveCaptainAmericaABoyfriend," SFGN mistakenly reported that actor Grant Gustin is openly gay. However, Gustin is straight. It is worth noting that Gustin has been recognized for his advocacy for LGBT rights.

BSO Searching for Hit-And-Run Driver Who killed Pedestrian Michael d’Oliveira
J
ust two days before his fortieth birthday, Raymond King was killed by a hit-and-run driver. The incident occurred sometimes before 3 a.m. on June 10 near the intersection of Northeast 6 Avenue and Northeast 27 Street in Wilton Manors. The Broward Sheriff’s Office and the Wilton Manors Police Department are still searching for the driver or anyone who has information leading to an arrest. Video of King, taken at the corner of Wilton Drive and Northeast 6 Avenue before he was killed, shows him walking along Wilton Drive just before 2 a.m. In the video, King appears to be headed in the direction of where he was killed. According to BSO, King laid hurt and bleeding in the intersection when he was run over by an unidentified vehicle. Police do not yet know how he was injured. A large pool of blood in the middle of the street suggests that King was in the road when he was hit. It’s estimated that the driver of the car that hit him was traveling at 30 miles per hour when King was
hit. The impact threw King about 37 feet onto the side of the road. In an online obituary, friends and former coworkers expressed their sorrow at King’s death. “There will never be the perfect words to convey the sense of loss we all feel over this horrific tragedy. I find, and I know you do too, a kind of peace in knowing our wonderful Ray is with your mom and dad now, smiling and having a grand ol' time! I love you all . . . Diana,” wrote Diana Beckler. “So sorry to hear of this. I met Raymond a few years ago when I first moved to Florida. Such a great guy with so much life to give taken too soon. Rest in peace my friend,” Kent Strunk wrote.
Anyone with information is asked to contact BSO Det. Michael Wiley at 954-321-4841. Tips can be given anonymously to Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS or online at BrowardCrimeStoppers.org. Crime Stoppers is offering up to $3,000 for information that leads to an arrest.

Comments from SFGN’s

Alex Thomas –
Ten years ago this wouldn't have been news, or reported as a hate crime. Eventually the people who behave this way will fade away, or sit in cells trying to figure out how they're going to pay their civil suit penalties. We will win.
Tim Robblee –
Isn't there also something about reasonable expectation of privacy even in outdoor settings?
Robb Kvašňák –
This new crime was indeed a crime. But the idea that cruising in the park is a crime is just plain wrong. Let me explain: suppose a woman and a man enter Colohatchee Park holding hands and at one point they are so overcome with love for each other that they embrace in a passionate kiss. Would that be a crime? So, then suppose that I walk into the park with my husband and we do the same thing. Is that then a crime? Or if two people who don't know each other suddenly embrace and French kiss. Is that then a crime? Some how society's whole notion of crime is illogical - especially in the wake of a mass shooting, which doubtlessly IS a crime. But physical love as a crime?
FEDS: No Evidence Pulse Gunman Used Gay HookUp Apps; Watched Gay Porn Or Had Boyfriend Ian Slick – Liars!
Elthon Wolffemann DeCastillo – ha! the media bamboozled the audiences.
Steve Johnson – no surprise. rumors always run rampant after any of these mass shootings.

Patrick – The Muslims want to sent you to hell, the Catholic Church wants to save you from hell. I cant condem you as a person but I’m damn allowed to despise your gross, sick and immoral lifestyle. Get over yourself and stop inflicting your perverted pagan lifestyle on everyone else. Unfortunately you will burn in the fires of hell if you do not repent.
Mercury613 –
Yes, Christians are so much better than Muslims; they just dehumanize and shame LGBT people into suicide so that they can avoid bad PR and save money on bullets. BTW thanks for proving t0he author's point so beautifully.
Richard King –
If it took the Catholic church 700 years to forgive their own religious members (Knights Templar), then I think LGBT shouldn't hold their breath.
South Florida Politicians Demand Gun Reform Law Kenneth Latsch –
Yes but what of those constant gun shows at the War Memorial Aud?
Vincent Zeteliano –
#FireDebbie for using the victims of Orlando to pander votes.
Richard King –
Shouldn't it be "religious freedom" reform, since religions breed hatred & all....or does that seem to practical? I mean, if you take away guns, then hateful people will just use knives & explosive devices, right?

Pam Bondi's Grand Standing Over Pulse Tragedy Outrages Gays Daniel Nistal –
I am gay and all in favor of gay marriage but I don't see the connection between her fighting gay marriage and her helping the families of those that were shot. She is not a gay supporter today or was before. Are we saying she is trying to portrait that she likes us now?
David Lafond –
Psychopaths don't accept personal responsibility.
Joanie Bigham –
She is Despicable! The whole Bigot train all raced to Orlando showing ZERO respect for the Victims, their families and all of us who are the LGBTQ family just to be "seen "on CNN. An all time low, I didn’t think was possible. Scott, Muir, Rubio and Bondi need to GO! Call their offices and let them hear from us that this is UNACCEPTABLE! #ProudPFLAGHRCEqualityFlaMOM #DontMessWithMOM
Kenneth Kirk Westlake –
I couldn't agree more with what was said in this letter. She chose to make herself a victim when nobody else thought that except for a specific "news" channel ... I truly believe she was horrified by what happened but she in no way expressed remorse for her previous comments and actions toward the LGBTQ Community ... Anderson Cooper did an amazing job holding her accountable and for being a hypocrite about this issue ... We need to work together to get her voted out of office the next time she is up for election.
William Falce –
Actions speak louder than words Pam Bondi. Make us believe you and do something remarkable to protect LGBT Floridians from discrimination.
Jerry Foster –
What gets me about this woman is the fact she is so wishy washy. If it makes her look good, she'll fall right into the line up. But on her throne as Attorney General, she balked at the notion of gay marriage with her constant road blocks. 'Your ability to slither around questions Bondi won't save you here. Anderson is one of the big dogs of media girlfriend.'

Rubio Reverses Course John McDonald
M
Heads for tough re-election campaign
arco Rubio, once championed as the future of Florida’s Republican Party, appears to be headed for a tough re-election fight to keep a job some believe he never fulfilled – or even wanted. Rubio, 45, Florida’s junior U.S. Senator in Washington, announced his intentions Wednesday afternoon to seek re-election. His decision has many political analysts shaking their heads. “It’s a total ego trip,” said a Capitol Hill staffer, speaking by telephone with SFGN on the condition of anonymity. Just last year Rubio had all but abandoned his Senate seat to campaign for the Republican Party’s nomination to the U.S. Presidency. However, he was beaten badly in the primaries by New York businessman Donald J. Trump and outflanked on the right by U.S. Senator Ted Cruz of Texas. On Wednesday, Rubio announced he would campaign to keep his Senate seat. “I changed my mind,” Rubio told CNN. “I never said I was perfect and I had every answer. When you are not perfect and don’t have every answer there will come times when you change your mind.” Rubio’s reversal prompted two would-be rivals – Florida Lt. Gov. Carlos Lopez-Cantera and U.S. Congressman Ron DeSantis (R-Jacksonville) – to leave the race. Two other Republican candidates – Orlando defense contractor Todd Wilcox and millionaire land speculator Carlos Beruff – figure to be Rubio’s chief challengers in the GOP primary election (Aug.30). Andy Eddy, a member of the Broward Log Cabin Republicans Club, said only Wilcox had spoken to the LGBT inclusive group. “He’s (Wilcox) reaching out more than the other candidates,” Eddy said.
6
• 6.29.2016
Eddy said he was “surprised” by Rubio’s change of course, but admitted to not being close to his office. “He’s never been to any of our (Log Cabin Broward) meetings,” Eddy said. Meanwhile, Democrats wasted no time in blasting Rubio’s decision. “Marco Rubio abandoned his constituents, and now he’s treating them like a consolation prize,” said U.S. Congressman Patrick E. Murphy (D-Jupiter), in a news release. “Unlike Marco Rubio, I love working hard every single day for the people of Florida.” Murphy is competing with fellow Congressman Alan Grayson (D-Orlando) for the Democratic nomination. Rubio was elected in 2010 during the Tea Party wave that swept Republicans into power. What Rubio has done with that power is the question. “From missing the most votes of any Florida Senator in nearly 50 years, to seeking to ban abortion even in cases of rape or incest, to repeatedly voting against closing the terrorist gun loophole, Rubio is proving he is only out for himself.” Pompano Beach voter Eileen Pangione agreed. “I would never vote for him (Rubio) under any circumstance,” Pangione said. “He’s done nothing. He’s never there to vote.” When Rubio does cast his vote on bills he seldom breaks with the pro-gun lobby. In January of 2016, Rubio told The Hill news organization that President Barack Obama would “confiscate every gun in America” and “get rid of the Second Amendment.” In the same interview Rubio was quoted as saying, “ISIS and terrorists do not get their guns from a gun show.”
“He does not want to take guns out of the hands of terrorists,” said a Capitol Hill staffer, speaking to SFGN on the condition of anonymity. In a news release, Wilcox seems less concerned with firearm regulations and more interested in a sweeping revolution. “It’s not just time for a new generation of leaders, it’s time for new leadership altogether,” said Wilcox, a U.S. Army combat veteran and Special Forces commander. “If we expect to change the direction of our country, Florida’s next U.S. Senator cannot come from the same political class who are already running Washington, D.C. We need leadership with real-world experience, whose sole priority is restoring America’s prominence, not getting re-elected or running for the next political office.” During his doomed quest for the Republican Party’s Presidential nomination, Rubio won the Minnesota Caucus, but nothing else. He lost every county in Florida to Trump with the exception of his home county of Miami-Dade. His battle with Trump turned nasty in the end with Trump labeling him “Little Marco” and Rubio calling the New York businessman a “con artist.” Regardless of their bitter primary Rubio has tepidly endorsed Trump but has also admitted that he doesn’t trust the businessman with the nuclear codes and said just last week that the idea of Trump winning the White House was "worrisome." Update: Wilcox has since dropped out of the race and endorsed Rubio.

LGBT Night Brings "Good Vibes" in West Palm Deon C. Jefferson
I
n the words of LGBT icon Big Frieda, "I came here to slay!" This was the mindset of those that attended the first LGBT Night at Sketch Lounge in West Palm Beach last Wednesday sponsored by Compass, the LGBT center in Lake Worth. The event included raffles from some of the best vendors and businesses in the Palm Bach area including Mellow Mushroom, Lynora's, Trendsetters Barbershop, Brother Jimmy’s BBQ, and Hullabaloo. A $10 suggested donation was the price of admittance that partygoers were happy to pay. Doors opened at around 9:30 p.m., and guests were treated like celebrities as they struck their fiercest poses, in addition to being greeted by Palm Beach royalty Velvet Lenore and Rihanna Petrone. Sketch was fully decked out with rainbow balloons, dozens of gay flags, and one of the most exquisite ice sculptures the Palm Beaches has ever seen. "This is a great event to be a part of," mentioned Moe who is a regular bartender at Pawn Shop. “I’m happy to be here because it will help out the tragedy that happened in Orlando." DJ Joshua Adam made sure to keep the party going with music from some of our communities most beloved queens like Britney Spears, Ariana Grande, Lady Gaga, and Beyoncé. At one point the DJ "Show me Love" by Robin C. that made the crowd go crazy, as well as brought a boatload of 90's nostalgia. Drinks and cocktails were served by
shirtless bartenders who wore preppy bowties, with some in suspenders. "I think this event is amazing," said Julie Seaver Chief Financial Officer at Compass. "David and Sketch Lounge reached out to Compass the first week in June wanting to do something for the LGBT community. They wanted to raise money and keep it local, then the massacre in Orlando happened. It changed everybody’s lives, this is our New Orleans fire moment, and it’s our Stonewall moment, especially for this generation. Anytime one of our straight allied bars or businesses wants to host a fundraiser for the LGBT community, it makes us all feel stronger." Sketch made sure to keep the momentum going by opening the drag show with a special performance by Nicole Sapphire. She performed songs from superstar Pink including "Don't Let Me Get Me" and "Get The Party Started." The audience really got excited when she transitioned to "Raise You Glass," not to mention she did a full on cartwheel in six-inch heels. Host for the evening Velvet Lenore also brought her A-game as she effortlessly performed "Work" by Rihanna. Lenore brought the party to their feet as she gyrated, twerked, and did the splits in the flyest silver platform. The night was hailed as a success and everybody appeared to have had a good time. "I don't care who you are, whether you are gay, straight, or bisexual, we are here to have a good time and to come together for a good cause," Lenore proclaimed.
Sketch, 221 N. Clematis St., West Palm Beach, will be hosting a weekly LGBT night on Wednesdays. 8

South Florida’s Women In Network Dori Zinn
F
Bringing LBT women together through networking and community service
or Lynn Glover, being part of South Florida’s Women In Network was a natural fit. “I enjoy networking with and giving back to my community,” Glover, the Treasurer for WIN, said. “I am a natural networker. I love staying active with my peeps.” Glover has been on the Board of Directors for more than a decade and joined through other community volunteer work. “I was volunteering at a Habitat for Humanity build and the topic of getting involved with the WIN Board came up,” she said. “Naturally, I volunteered to get involved.” For almost three decades, Women In Network has served as one of the leading networking groups for the LBT community in South Florida. It’s one of the oldest organizations for lesbians in the state. For Glover, WIN is multi-faceted. “For me, being a part of WIN means I have the chance to socialize and give back to my community,” she said. “I am driven by connection and making a difference. I have also cultivated many meaningful business relationships.” Glover isn’t the only one. Jane Kreinberg, the Vice President and Programming Chair for WIN, was interested in joining the community when she moved here in 2009. “When I moved to South Florida, I wanted to get involved with the women's community, and WIN was the obvious choice,” Kreinberg said. “I wanted to help and be more involved in an organization that gave so much to me.” WIN hosts or co-hosts many different events and programs monthly. On the first Wednesdays of every month, the group holds WIN First Wednesdays at various spots across South Florida. For June, WIN held a “mix & mingle” at Mojo in Fort Lauderdale where attendees could network and socialize while noshing on halfpriced appetizers and drinks. In July, the group is partnering with the Human Rights Campaign
for the “What’s Your Elephant” art exhibit at 1310 Gallery in Fort Lauderdale. Kreinberg said that while the locations vary, it’s almost always free to attend for all. Aside from First Wednesdays events, WIN has theater nights, beach parties, and art openings. Since 2009, WIN has had a softball team. Board member Elaine Gennaro says the team plays two seasons a year. “We play Spring and Fall, with a $35 players fee,” Gennaro said. “It’s a women’s league, and any woman that has played softball can join.” The team, WINgrlz, plays in the Sports Foundation of South Florida Women’s Slow Pitch Softball League. Games are played at Mills Pond Park in Fort Lauderdale. Aside from the networking events and sports teams, WIN also gives back a tremendous amount to the community. WIN has held an annual charity golf tournament where tens of thousands of dollars has gone to many different organizations. For the last three tournaments, the TransKids Purple Rainbow Foundation were the recipients. The organization received nearly $30,000 from WIN members and supporters throughout South Florida. WIN has donated thousands of dollars to groups like TKPRF, PACE Center for Girls, Poverello, Women in Distress, Broward County Schools, and other organizations through charity work like the golf tournament, but also back-to-school drives, toy drives, and even a couponing program. Treasurer Lynn Glover said not all events are specific team-building events, but all events do have the same goal. “All of our events are meant to bring women together so that we can have a strong support system in our community and beyond,” she said. “I have many friends in WIN, both personally and professionally. They are my ‘sisters’ and I know that I can count on them for love and support.”

Know Your HIV Status National HIV Testing Day
Denise Royal
J
une 27 was National HIV Testing Day. The annual event was started as an awareness and educational day. Around 1.2 million people in the U.S. live with HIV, and one in eight people don't know they have it. Nearly 45,000 people find out they have HIV every year. In Florida, there are about 175,000 people living with HIV/AIDS. About 16 percent of people infected with the virus are unaware of their status. National HIV Testing Day is extremely important says Lorenzo Robertson, Emerging Interventions Manager at The Pride Center at Equality Park. “Getting tested is an act of bravery,” he said. “It demonstrates you desire to know what’s going on with you and your body. Knowing your status not only helps you, but also illuminates your power to protect those that you love.” Miami-Dade and Broward Counties topped the list of new HIV infections in the U.S. in 2014 per 100,000 residents, according to state and federal data. There are 27,035 people living with HIV/AIDS in Miami-Dade County, while there are 17,632 people living with HIV/AIDS in Broward County. This understates the importance of getting tested and knowing your status. According to the Florida Department of Health, Florida continues to lead the nation in the number of HIV tests conducted at over 1,500 publicly funded and registered sites. During 2013, the Counseling, Testing and Linkage (CTL) data team recorded over 428,000 HIV screening tests with about 60 percent of these tests conducted at sites using rapid test technologies. There’s no doubt about it – getting tested makes a difference. The CDC recommends that everyone between the ages of 13 and 64 be tested for HIV at least once as part of their routine health care. Testing for HIV is a powerful tool when it comes to prevention. It is proven that when a person knows his/her HIV status, they will apply prevention measures with their partners and
will enter into medical care and tend to remain in care. With early diagnosis, individuals can be placed in treatment and care resulting in better health outcomes. Traditional testing — an oral swab or a blood draw test — can be done, which takes about two weeks for results, or a rapid HIV test can be used, officials say. The rapid HIV test, which requires no more than a finger-stick blood specimen, delivers reliable results in 20 minutes. Reactive rapid tests must be confirmed with a confirmatory test. “New treatments are bringing hope and enhancing the quality of life for those infected with HIV/AIDS,” said Lorenzo Lowe, Director of HIV Prevention at Compass, the LGBT Community Center of the Palm Beaches. “However, these considerable advances can only help us if we know our HIV status.” Here’s a list of places get tested, including those with rapid testing: http://bit.ly/292EfvH. In Miami, Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson (FL-24) and other elected officials took confidential HIV tests to encourage the public to do so as well. A complete list of testing sites for Miami-Dade County can be found at: http://bit.ly/292QFVZ. In Palm Beach County, HIV cases have jumped from 144 to 299 between 2005 and 2014. Local organizations are joining the Florida Department of Health in Palm Beach County by expanding HIV Test Day that traditionally occurred June 27, into a week of activities talking about HIV, testing for HIV and treating HIV. "The interest in preventing and treating HIV generated by HIV Test Day has always been our chance to inform everyone about the importance of knowing your status," said Rob Scott, HIV/ AIDS Educator with Florida Health, Palm Beach County, in a released statement. "This year we are hoping even more people will get tested. A person knowing their status goes a long way in preventing the spread of this disease." A list of testing sites in Palm Beach County can be found here. http://bit.ly/292Ed74.

large field of gay candidates qualified to run for elected office last week in the State of Florida. David Richardson (D-Miami Beach) led the way, seeking re-election to his House seat in district 113. Richardson, a certified public accountant, is the Democrats’ floor leader in Tallahassee. He faces one challenger, Rey Valdes of Coral Gables, in the Aug. 30 primary election. Republican Jonathan H. Parker of Miami Beach awaits the winner in November’s general election. Meanwhile, in Orlando, Carlos Guillermo Smith took the Democratic Party’s nomination in district 49. Guillermo Smith, a gay Latino feminist, faces a no party affiliated candidate in the general election. Closer to home, Wilton Manors attorney Ken Keechl qualified for the state house seat in district 93. Keechl, a former Broward County Mayor, faces Florida Atlantic University student Doug Oberman, 22, in the Democratic primary election. The winner moves on to battle sitting representative George Moraitis (R-Fort Lauderdale), a decorated Naval seaman, in the general election. Keechl contends Moraitis is a “homophobe.”
The coastal district stretches from Boca Raton to Hollywood. In district 92, Paulette V. Armstead is campaigning against four other Democrats. This district covers Deerfield Beach, Pompano Beach, Oakland Park and northern Fort Lauderdale. Armstead, a lesbian, holds the distinction of being the first black female hired by the St. Petersburg Police Department. This is her first campaign for public office. On the Senate side, in a battle of the gays, two gay men – former Miami Beach Commissioner Michael Góngora and ex-North Miami Beach Mayor Kevin Burns -- qualified for the open seat in district 38. See page 15 for more on that race.

Stonewall Inn will be the First LGBT National Monument (CNN) President Barack Obama announced Friday he was designating the area around the Stonewall Inn in New York City as the country’s first monument to LGBT rights. “I believe our parks should reflect the full story of our country – the richness and diversity and uniquely American spirit that has always defined us, that we are stronger together. That out of many, we are one,” Obama said. The White House said the monument would encompass Christopher Park, the Stonewall Inn and the surrounding streets and sidewalks that were the sites of the 1969 Stonewall uprising. A police raid of the Stonewall Inn on June 28, 1969 in which patrons fought back lead to the first march for gay and lesbian rights in July 1969. The protestors are often

credited as a flashpoint for LGBT rights in the United States, and June has become pride month in many cities around the world, recognized through parades and picnics. “The Stonewall uprising, led primarily by people of color and people of transgender experience, was a watershed moment in our nation’s history, sparking what many call the beginning of modern-day LGBT rights movements,” said Wendy Stark, executive director of the Callen-Lorde Community Health Center, which primarily serves Ney York City’s LGBT Community. “The recognition of Stonewall as a national monument is an important step in recognizing our vibrant past and spotlighting the unique contributions LGBT Americans make to the rich fabric of our nation,” Stark told CNN.

In honor of London Pride, the candy company Skittles has ushered a temporary redesign of their colorful candy, making both the packaging and candy black and white, according to the Creative Review. “So this is kinda awkward, but we’re just gonna go ahead and address the rainbow-coloured elephant in the room,” Skittles released in a video. “You have the rainbow… we have the rainbow… and usually that’s just hunky-dory. But this Pride, only one rainbow deserves to be the centre of attention – yours. And we’re not going to be the one to steal your rainbow thunder, no siree. That’s why this weekend, we’re giving up our rainbow. But don’t worry, we’ll still be there to celebrate every colorful minute with you, we’ll just be completely starkers while doing it. Have a great day, Pride. From Skittles.” The colorless candy will also be joined by a black and white float in the Pride in London Parade on Saturday. Advertisements will also be present, touting the hashtag #onerainbow for it’s Facebook and Twitter campaign.

Shooting Range Offers Free Gun Texas Classes for LGBT People In Wake Of Orlando
A Houston shooting range offered free gun classes to the LGBT community in the wake of the Orlando shooting this month, according to NewNowNext. Jeff Sanford, owner of the Shiloh Shooting Range, where the classes were offered, said the turnout was higher than expected, and the unprecedented signups set a new record for his business. “Everybody has been so excited about being able to come out and do this. And it’s been a great learning experience for not only

my community but for their community as well,” Sanford said. “They’re learning about their rights and learning about the License to Carry Class and they’re absolutely thrilled to take it.” According to Sanford, 60 of the 62 people who signed up for the first free class showed up, and over 300 more called in response to the offer. “These are people who beforehand thought that they couldn’t find themselves walking into a gun store,” he added in an interview with Red State. “They’re not necessarily what we’ve been told and we’re not necessarily what they’ve been told,” Sanford said.

K HIV Charities Make History in Campaign for PrEP at Pride in London
The biggest HIV, health and LGBT sexual health charities united and marched together for the first time in their campaign to bring PrEP to the UK, according to GayStarNews. These LGBT health advocates have decided to make the best of the situation brought on by the divisive Brexit vote. NHS England refused to fund PrEP in an unexpected decision, and these advocates hope to change that at this year’s Pride in London. “I’ve been moved and inspired to see the community come together on this special day for the LGBT community in the fight for PrEP,” Ian Green, Chief Executive of Terrence Higgins Trust said. “Gay men are still disproportionately affected by HIV, so the impact on the LGBT community, if PrEP was made available to high-risk groups, could be extraordinary.” Green continued, “In the face of buck passing from NHS England and the lack of leadership from the government, our unity is more important than ever. We are stronger and louder together, and we mustn’t let HIV prevention be swept under the rug.” Dr. Greg Ussher, CEO of METRO Charity said that Pride in London is the perfect opportunity to demand access as a community to PrEP.

A certain population of the Captain America fan base have started the Twitter campaign #GiveCaptainAmericaABoyfried, begging Marvel to officiate Captain America as bisexual and set him up with his partner in crime, Bucky Barnes. According to LGBTQ Nation, Sebastian Stan, the actor who plays Bucky Barnes, is all for a canonically bi Captain America. “Look, man, I think it’s great,” he said. “Movies are for people to relate to in whatever they want. No one here is ever going to point a finger and say what’s right and wrong. For me, it’s like, Awww. awmakers Renew Push to Make June 26 ‘Equality Day’
Sunday will mark the one-year anniversary of the Obergefell v. Hodges overturning state bans on same-sex marriage and extending marriage equality nationwide. According to the Washington Blade, lawmakers are renewing a push to establish that date to honor the milestone decision. The date is also the three-year anniversary of the 2013 Windsor v. United States to combat the anti-gay Defense of Marriage Act, as well as the Perry v. Hollingsworth ruling that restored marriage equality to California after Proposition 8. Rep. Suzan DelBene, D-Wash., is leading the effort in Congress to honor the date in remembrance of those decisions. She introduced a resolution in December to designate that date as Equality Day. “I think this is a day where we formally honor LGBT equality just as we do right now with Pride and continue to talk about the great strides that have been made, the work that remains to be done, but really a day of celebration of equality,” DelBene said. The resolution originally had 93 cosponsors, and that number has grown to 145 – all Democrats – due to a swell of nearly 40 lawmakers in the last month. “America should celebrate the progress we

have made to pass on to the next generation a country that is more equal, not less equal,” Sen. Tammy Baldwin, D-Wis., the only out lesbian in Congress said in a statement. “But we cannot mistake our progress for victory. We have more work to do in the march for fairness, freedom and full equality for the LGBT community. I believe America is ready to take the next steps forward and together we will break down barriers so that every American has an equal opportunity to dream the same dreams, chase the same ambitions and have the same shot at success.” 6.29.2016 •

BA, WNBA, Become First Pro Leagues to March in New York City’s Pride Parade
Adam Silver, NBA commissioner marched in New York City’s Pride Parade on Sunday. The NBA and WNBA were also represented with a float in the parade, celebrating the LGBT community, according to ESPN. Silver and the deputy commissioner Mark Tatum wore shirts that read “#OrlandoUnited” in order to show support for the victims of the Pulse nightclub shooting that happened earlier this month. Lisa Borders, WNBA president, also marched in the parade and tweeted about the historic nature of the NBA and WNBA’s involvement. “NBA/WNBA – FIRST professional league to march & have a float in a PRIDE Parade, NYC!!” Borders said in a Tweet. Former NBA player Jason Collins, who came out as gay when he was an active player in 2013, as well as former WNBA player Sue Wicks, who came out as lesbian in 2002 when she played for the Liberty, were some of the representatives of the leagues aboard the float. upreme Court Upholds Abortion Rights for Women in Texas
On Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down two restrictions on abortion enacted by the State of Texas in 2013 that would have shut down three quarters of the clinics in the nation’s second-largest state. The 5-3 decision in Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt, upholding the constitutional rights of Texas women, will allow the remaining clinics in the state to keep their doors open and clear a path for other clinics to open or reopen to meet the needs of those who need abortion care across the state. The decision preserves safe and affordable health care for women in Texas, and was applauded by President Obama, along with the National Center for Lesbian Rights, whose policy director, Julianna S. Gonen, issued the following statement, applauding the court for protecting the LGBT community: “As it did one year ago in our landmark case that brought marriage equality to the nation, the Supreme Court affirmed the constitutional protections that secure some of the most personal decisions one can make—decisions around family
formation. Whether choosing a life partner or determining whether to continue or end a pregnancy, the liberties enshrined in the Fourteenth Amendment are fundamental and cannot be legislated away by politicians."

Gongora Throws Hat In Florida Senate Race John McDonald
M
ichael Gongora is stepping up a level. Gongora, an attorney and former Miami Beach Commissioner, announced last week he is campaigning for a seat in the Florida Senate. SFGN spoke with Gongora by telephone from his law offices in Miami Beach on Friday. He sounded confident for the challenge that awaits. “I have the experience and reputation of responsibility to represent the district in Tallahassee,” Gongora said. Gongora paid the $1,781.82 qualifying fee to the Department of State in order to appear on August’s primary ballot. He is running against six other Democrats for the party’s nomination. In a new release, Gongora states he will “work even harder and be more effective than as a private citizen or community leader.” Gongora, a gay man, was a member of SFGN’s first Out 50 issue in 2014 – a year after finishing a strong second to Philip Levine in the Miami Beach mayoral election. “Michael Gongora for many years has been a champion for all of South Florida’s diverse communities,” said Jonathan Welsh, a Miami Beach resident and head of Marketing and Development at Care Resource. “He embraces diversity, works hard and has paid his dues. If one just looks at his record, the proof is in the pudding.” Gongora, 45, whose grandfather
emigrated from Cuba, serves as a legal advisor for Unity Coalition, a Hispanic LGBT non-profit. Press releases announcing his campaign were e-mailed in English and Spanish. “He’s a well-rounded person,” said Unity Coalition President Herb Sosa. “Our community and the people of this district will be well served by Michael in Tallahassee.” Senate district 38, a Miami-Dade district, became a competitive scramble when Senator Gwen Margolis, 81, Florida’s longest serving sitting legislator, decided to not seek re-election. Joining Gongora in the field of seven Democrats for the open senate seat is current Florida Representative Daphne Campbell, 59, a social conservative who has been dogged in the past over corruption charges and health care fraud. “She’s a horrible person,” said Tim Ross, a member of the Dolphin Democrats, an LGBT club in Broward County. “She’s homophobic, anti-choice and corrupt.” Campbell, Ross said, co-sponsored last year’s infamous “bathroom bill” which prevented transgender people from using the restroom of their choice. A registered nurse and native of Haiti, Campbell describes herself as a “Christian Democrat.” Also running for the seat are former North Miami Beach Mayor Kevin Burns, teacher Don Feste, businessman Anis Blemur, Doral resident Bruce Kaplan and former prosecutor Jason Pizzo.

Marriage Equality – One Year Later Marriage ruling plaintiff from Ohio dedicated to activism
Associated Press
(AP) — Three years ago Sunday, Jim Obergefell asked his longtime partner to marry him, beginning a whirlwind of events that led to his name being at the top of the U.S. Supreme Court case that resulted exactly two years later in legalization of same-sex marriage across America. He and terminally ill John Arthur were married aboard a medically equipped plane on a tarmac in Maryland, where they flew because of Ohio's constitutional ban on same-sex marriage. Their situation, which raised questions about what would happen legally upon Arthur's death back in Ohio, drew the attention of veteran Cincinnati civil rights attorney Al Gerhardstein and put their case on the path to the nation's highest court. Obergefell is crisscrossing the country promoting a new book about the legal battle and other plaintiffs and people closely involved in it, written with journalist Debbie
Cenziper and titled "Love Wins." Despite the book's title, clashes over the ruling and LGBT rights continue. Some states are debating legislation critics say would legalize discrimination, and 11 states are suing President Barack Obama's administration over its directive to let transgender students use public school bathrooms and locker rooms to match their gender identities. A pending Ohio bill, dubbed the Pastor Protection Act, would let churches and pastors refuse to perform same-sex marriages. Bill supporter Rep. Nino Vitale, R-Urbana, wrote after last year's Supreme Court ruling: "Subverting the laws of nature is not wise." Over coffee awhile back in Cincinnati for book-signings, Obergefell, 49, a Sandusky, Ohio, native who is moving to Washington D.C., talked about the state of the rights movement and his own plans.

Some excerpts: What are your thoughts as you think about the ruling anniversary? One is just loving the joy I see across the country when people stop me to show me photos, tell me stories, show me the wedding rings, talk about how after having been together for 30 years, they finally can call each other "husband and husband" or "wife and wife." They hug me, they cry, they shake my hand. I feel like I'm part of thousands of marriages, and that's such a wonderful gift. So I've seen joy, and I also see the backlash. We all expected backlash ... but what has happened is just far more vicious than any of us dreamt of. It's just becoming increasingly clear how much education still has to happen.
▶▶▶ What's your reaction to the shootings this month that killed 49 people in Orlando (in a gay nightclub)? It makes us feel afraid and concerned, but it also makes us proud to be part of a community that is resilient. ... We've been through a lot. We've been through the HIV-AIDS crisis. We've been through centuries of hatred directed our way. We have moved forward, and we've learned that the way we do this is by being a community that fights for each other, by having allies on our side and helping people understand us. But we're angry that so many politicians won't event utter LGBTQ when they talk about this atrocity. This is a hate crime, pure and simple, and for people to ignore that ... it's harmful and hurtful.

You moved a book-signing from the local county library after its board refused to pay for a transgender employee's transition surgery. What is the state of the transgender movement a year after marriage ruling? In the past year, my understanding, my attitudes, my knowledge, my experience, has changed dramatically, and for the better. I look at it this way: John's and my fight and the fight of every single person in that lawsuit is about equality, about everyone being allowed to participate in society equally. And that's what has to happen. And there was no question in my mind that I could not hold an event and talk about love and equality and fairness in a building when I know my transgender siblings are not being treated that way. You and John (who died in October 2013) have said you were "accidental activists," but now you are active in speaking out in appearances, interviews, on social media. Do you plan to continue that? It wasn't until we found ourselves in a set of circumstances we never planned, we never imagined; once that happened, I guess the inner activist in me was awakened. At this point, I can't imagine not being involved in some effort, some fight. It's about where we are in a society, it's about fighting for something bigger than I am, so absolutely, that's my life going forward.

According to the Huffington Post, the Miss America Pageant has made a bold and exciting move by crowning the first openly gay contestant in the franchise’s 95-year history. Erin O’Flaherty, 23, was crowned Miss Missouri on Saturday and is the first openly gay woman to hold the title according to Ann Jolly, chairman of the board of the Miss Missouri Scholarship Organization. “My coming out was very public, which is hard because you want it to be very private,” O’Flaherty said. “The public

access to that is very challenging because I wanted to protect my relationship and who I am, and come to terms with myself before the rest of the world got a chance to.” O’Flaherty also believes she will be the first openly gay contestant in this fall’s Miss America pageant, which takes place Sept. 11 in Atlantic City, New Jersey. “I’m hoping that I can strike a really nice balance of staying true to the values of Miss Missouri and also being able to exercise my personal views,” she said.
A new study suggests that many bisexual men are afraid to reveal their sexual orientation to female partners, relatives and friends, according to CBS news. Researchers at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health report that the fear of stigma and potential damage to their relationships keeps many bisexual men in the closet. “Our results clearly identify the need for public education campaigns to dispel myths about bisexual men – that bisexual men are not gay, do not have HIV, and
are not necessarily non-monogamous,” Eric Schrimshaw, associate professor of sociomedical sciences said in a school news release. The researchers interviewed 203 bisexual men, 18 and older, in New York City. Participants consistently reported believing they would face stigma for having sex with men. They also reported fear of negative emotional reactions, harm to relationships ot wives or girlfriends, and previous negative reactions to disclosure when coming out.

Pentagon Will Lift Military Ban On Trans Service Members On July 1
According to NewNowNext, the Pentagon will announce the repeal of the ban on transgender service members on July 1, removing the last remaining vestiges of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. The ban’s end was announced last June and was expected to take effect on May 27, 2016. However, sources inside the Department of Defense claimed it to be a complicated process, and the deadline was extended. “Top personnel officials plan to meet as
early as Monday to finalize details of the plan, and Deputy Defense Secretary Bob Work could sign off on it by Wednesday, according to a Defense official familiar with the timetable but who spoke on condition of anonymity because officials were not authorized to speak publicly about it,” USA Today relayed in a statement. “Final approval would come from Defense Secretary Ash Cater, and the announcement will be on the eve of the Fourth of July weekend.”

June South Florida AIDS Network Report Sean McShee The South Florida AIDS Network (SFAN) functions as the networking and advisory body for the Florida-Department of Health, Ryan White Care (FL-DOH RWC) grant in Broward County. Its monthly meetings are open to the public.
T
he Florida State Minority AIDS Coordinator, Ron Henderson, began the meeting. He spoke about the high risk for HIV infection among Blacks and Latinos. This is especially true among women. In Broward, 82.5 percent of all women living with HIV are Black. With this high risk, increased HIV testing and linkage to HIV treatment among Blacks and Latinos have become critical to controlling the epidemic. Henderson reported that Blacks had low levels of awareness of Pre Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) and Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP). Henderson then discussed plans to improve HIV services for Blacks and Latinos. Florida has hired Ricardo Jackson of Palm Springs as the Statewide Black Men’s Sexual Health Coordinator. Plans to improve Latino services emphasize learning. Health planners will rely on Latino focus groups throughout Florida to improve the state’s HIV plan. A Latino Technical Consultation will occur in Orlando to obtain feedback from this community. Henderson linked the high risk of Blacks and Latinos with structural barriers. The segregated health care system used to exclude Blacks while public health workers failed to treat Blacks for syphilis in the Tuskegee experiment. Experiences like those built distrust. Current barriers include HIV stigma, lack of access to health care, and personal history of past racial hostility from medical staff. Immigrant Asians, Blacks, and Latinos may face language and documentation barriers. Yvette Gonzales reported on the PROACT program that works to improve linkage to HIV care. The staff of the PROACT program includes an Adherence Nurse, linkage coordinators, and
HIV disease intervention specialists (DIS). The Adherence Nurse works with clients to help them take their HIV meds as directed. For example, a client, needing glasses, was unable to read the prescription label. That nurse obtained glasses for the client. The linkage coordinators work to link people with HIV care. The HIV DIS workers contact people living with HIV who have dropped out of care. Trudy Love of Black Treatment Advocates raised questions about aggressive Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) workers. STD workers would come looking for people at their homes when Love’s clinic was already providing them with STD treatment. Love felt that this aggressive outreach was unnecessary and excessive. Love’s clients felt that this aggressive outreach stigmatized them further. Several people at the meeting expressed agreement with Love. Gomez, however, lacks control over STD workers. As this could become an important problem, people from the Health Department wanted to resolve this issue. The STD workers’ manager will attend an upcoming SFAN meeting. Justin Bell of Fl-DOH-Broward RWC presented a table showing the documents that the Health Department requires for certification. Bell then reported on new intake processes for Broward Addiction and Recovery Center (BARC), the RWC residential substance abuse program. If an agency feels that BARC had unjustly denied its client admission, they should contact the FL-DOHBroward RWC. According to Bell, BARC served 34 RWC clients between June 3, 2015 and June 3, 2016. These 34 clients included one lesbian, 16 gay or bi men, and zero transgender clients.
Announcements Next SFAN Meeting: Friday, July 8 at 10 a.m., at the Holy Cross Healthplex, 1000 NE 56th Street, Ft. Lauderdale. Newcomers are encouraged to attend. The United States Conference on AIDS (USCA) will occur in September in Hollywood, Fl. If you would like to volunteer, please visit https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/USCA16. A survey for people living with HIV is now available https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/BCHIV2016. Care Resource (954-567-7141) has hormone therapy vouchers available for transgender clients.

the beginning of the AIDS epidemic, the ban, scientists insist, no longer makes sense. Last year, the FDA updated its policy to allow MSM men and transgender women to donate blood following one year of celibacy. In their letter to Commissioner Califf, members of Congress called the deferral policy “unsound.” “The FDA questionnaire should reflect risk-based behaviors as opposed to sexual orientation,” the letter states. The blood ban issue came to light following
the atrocities at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando where 49 people were killed and another 53 wounded in what is being called the largest mass shooting in U.S. history. With blood in demand, many healthy gay and bisexual men felt helpless to come to the aid of their community. “It is beyond time to lift this discriminatory ban,” said Murphy. Added Grayson, “After a tragedy, giving blood is a form of showing solidarity, even citizenship.”

Orlando's Somber Memories impact St Pete's Pride
Norm Kent

hen the first line of marchers in your pride parade walk silently while holding placards bearing the name of nearly 50 of your slain brothers and sisters... well, it's a sober reminder of the world we live in. It was followed by rows and rows of participants waving to the crowd with one hand and holding small lit white candles in the other. Orlando would be remembered, the wounded acknowledged, the lives lost commemorated. This majestic parade, however, typically months in the making, has been, year after year, the largest in the state. The pride parade in St. Petersburg, Florida is like no other. There are over 4,500 participants, and as many as 200,000 celebrants. The first reaction you have to the mass of humanity lining downtown Central Avenue is how can this really be happening in freaking Florida? Weren't we the state that banned gay adoption? Don't we have scores of police agencies from the West Palm Beach sheriff to Tallahassee cops still trying to entrap and bust gay men for lewd acts? Don't we have an attorney general who fought with her last ounce of energy to thwart marriage equality? Wasn't it the present governor who

couldn't use the phrase 'gays and lesbians' when describing the massacre of Latino LGBT people in Orlando? But guess what? Dorothy is not in Kansas anymore. What I have seen these past four weeks in South Florida, Orlando, Tampa and St. Pete is an awesome and historic display of LGBT solidarity. Stonewall was one small bar in one big city, but the tragedy on Disney's door has opened a floodgate of unprecedented unity. From Mallory Square in Key West to the state house in Neanderthal Tallahassee, the LGBT community of the Sunshine State will be heard from, proudly and loudly, with friends, many friends, on our side. It's telling that a score of corporations had floats in the St. Pete Parade, and not just Macy's. There was a cross-section of so many, from the Tampa Bay Rays to Bright House Networks, from Wells Fargo to GEICO to AT&T. But not just big businesses. Even local straight bars had floats in the big gay parade, over 150 of them. "Look, half our staff is gay," one participant told me, "and we all are a community. After Orlando, everyone wanted to be there to show their support." Even locals were there, Rocky Bowell showcasing Pride Fort Lauderdale with a modest booth, and Peter Clark driving the Hotspots! van through the crowd. As the parade moved along, the crowd
became more celebratory. But there was little joy for law enforcement. They were on call, en masse, and on alert. The area was under surveillance from three skywatch towers, extra trailers of cameras borrowed from Tampa Police Department, an undercover officer operation and help from the FBI, Homeland Security, Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The aura of Orlando was everywhere, from the 3,000 'We Are Orlando' t-shirts donated by the Tampa Bay Rays to the signs and banners blasted out on float after float. Still, this was a defiant celebration of life, a gathering saying we will not be denied. Nor can we be. Life will return to normal as June ends and July 4th falls upon us. We will gather on beaches and watch the fireworks, listen to the Navy bands and the National anthem. The massacre in Orlando will fade a little bit each day, as the headlines drift to fires in California and floods in West Virginia. We will be lost in the frenzy. The truth is we can't ever afford to forget what happened in Orlando. We were slaughtered and massacred and murdered for being gay and lesbian. We can't let that happen and go silently into our tomorrows. Each and every day you have a chance to be a voice for our rights, be that voice. Speak up, stand out, and make all our lives matter.
For the past two weeks, SFGN has increased its print run, printing and disseminating thousands of extra copies of our memorial editions to both Orlando and St. Pete, two amazing LGBT communities connected by the I-4 corridor. Personally, I am humbled and grateful for the thanks and appreciation we have received from the leaders of these communities, who have so generously praised our efforts. Were we only able to so every week, I would. We are all in this together, and our staff has worked ever so hard these past few weeks to do their part, creating a newspaper with compelling stories, original content and commemorative ads. It's time to recognize them and their hard work too, with back to back weekly issues of 88 and 72 pages. Whether you realize it or not, you are reading the largest gay weekly paper in the U.S. We are a free paper. We have only reached this plateau because of your support. SFGN may not do floats in parades or throw big mixers in bars, but each and every week I hope we deliver a product that you can be proud of; a newspaper with a conscience and convictions, that you can proudly call your LGBT community newspaper. Have a great 4th of July, remembering when the sky sparkles in the dark night, the lights are illuminating the lives of 49 of your brothers and sisters in Orlando.

This hate-filled event had brought out hours of Sunday, June 12. I'll admit, I was numb compassion, strength and unity. - gay and straight - telling them "I'm glad you're here." It wasn't until drag host Darcel Stevens took to the stage out of costume to lead - what would be the first of many vigils, that I realized I wasn't the only one filled with questions. "It could have been any of us. Any of us," Stevens said. "Why not us? Why are we here?" I don't consider myself an advocate - or special. Yes, I'm a gay man but I'm also just a human, living my life, continually striving to be a good person. I didn't know what I had to offer, so I did the only thing I felt I could do...Listen. I spent the days preceding just listening to people in our community; listening to their stories, their heartache. It was through that, I found out there is a reason I'm here. I was talking to a friend, whom I had met only a few weeks prior. Out of nowhere, he said, "You saved my life, you know?" "Whatever." I said, laughing, thinking maybe he was just being melodramatic. He went on to say that he was on his way to Pulse that fateful Saturday night, when he received a text from me, asking him to come meet me at Parliament House. "I wanted to hang out with you, so I diverted from my normal Saturday night plans," he stated, welling up. I began to sob. Something as seemingly insignificant as sending a text had changed one person's timeline. It was then, I finally began to allow myself to say, "Yes, this did affect me, too." I lost these people, too. I've marched with these people. I've cheered for these people, watched them perform. I've supported them, cried with them, danced along side them. I've celebrated being part of the LGBT community with them.
Later that week, I found out that the killer was actually at Parliament House Saturday night but security had escorted him out for "suspicious behavior." Needless to say, I wavered from sadness, shock, anger, and anxiety, realizing how close to home this event really did hit. I found myself not wanting to leave my house, getting physically ill, and having night terrors. I decided to see one of the many grief counselors available, where I learned that I was, indeed, traumatized by the events. I learned that it's OK to allow myself to disconnect from all the news and social media posts we're being inundated with to take care of myself, so that I can be here for others. And I need to remember to breathe. I don't think I will fully understand why this happened but I take some solace in envisioning our loved ones at one hell of a party somewhere. Just picture it. Among the crowd is Lucille Ball, Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Bea Arthur, Rue McClanahan, Estelle Getty, Marilyn Monroe, Rock Hudson, and Andy Warhol. Judy Garland, David Bowie, Prince, Freddie Mercury, Janis Joplin, Amy Winehouse, Selena, and Whitney Houston are putting on extravagant performances. The music never ends and there is never a cover. Like many who have become before us and fought, we will rise. We will be visible. We will live. As we continue to heal, we need to continue to love. The good that has come - and continues to come - from one person's hate is staggering. As we've seen, the worldwide love of epic proportions we have received in the wake of tragedy just proves that love will always conquer hate.

as Arkansas, Florida, Indiana, Nebraska, Wisconsin, and Utah, have had to continue fighting, even after marriage equality, for the right to put both parents on their children’s birth certificates. I am proud of them and of the LGBTQ legal organizations who championed their cases. The thing that has made me most proud of the LGBTQ community (parents or not) in recent months, however, is that we have risen in support of our transgender members, who are bearing the brunt of current anti-LGBTQ sentiment. Individuals across the spectrum are speaking out— and we have created enough goodwill and understanding that our allies remain beside us even after marriage equality. Companies like Target have made a point of saying trans customers can use the bathroom facilities of their identified gender, even in states with trans-phobic legislation, like North Carolina. The federal Justice Department has affirmed its support of transgender students and their right to bathroom access. This fight is not yet over, but we can be proud that we’re fighting it. There are non-political signs of progress, too. The number of LGBTQ-inclusive children’s books continues to grow, for example. Notable new picture books this year include J. J. Austrian’s “Worm Loves Worm,”
about a relationship beyond gender; and a revised, 40th anniversary edition of Norma Simon’s classic “All Kinds of Families,” which now includes same-sex parents among its diverse cast. For tweens, there is Dana Alison Levy’s “The Family Fletcher Takes Rock Island,” a sequel to her 2014 book about a family of four kids and two dads; and Robin Stevenson’s “Pride: Celebrating Diversity and Community,” which blends a history of the event with a broader look at the struggle for LGBTQ equality. And on-screen inclusion for kids continues to creep forward, with a pair of lesbian moms featured in the Cartoon Network’s “Clarence” and a likely twomom family shown briefly in Disney/Pixar’s upcoming “Finding Dory.” We have a lot to celebrate, then: triumphs big and small, personal and societal. Inequalities still abound, though—both for LGBTQ people and for other marginalized groups in our country and around the world. We have made tremendous gains in the past year, but we have also seen backlash. Now we must take our feelings of pride and use them as momentum towards action. Celebrate what we have done, but also think about where we are going, as individuals, families, a community, and a world. Happy Pride, all.

P
rudential has released results from its 2016 LGBT Financial Experience Survey, the first since last years Supreme Court decision legalizing same sex marriage in all states. This newest survey identifies changes since the original survey completed in 2012, before same sex marriages became available nationally. Interestingly, same sex couples doubled in the fouryear span. Half of the respondents acknowledged that same sex marriage has made their finances easier, a number that was only 13 percent in 2012. The 2016 survey includes LGBT respondents from all fifty states; the LGBT population is distributed evenly across the nation with there being no greater likelihood of a higher LBGT population neither in states with more inclusive policies, nor in urban areas with larger populations. We are everywhere. In 2012, 9 percent lived with parents, today 18 percent do. In four years the LGBT community has changed a great deal. Our marriage rate is up from just 8 to 30 percent, more than tripling. Our right to marriage and its attendant benefits has changed the way we manage our finances with our new ability to file joint tax returns, take advantage of pre tax spousal health insurance and transfer assets on death. In 2012 there were 15 percent of LGBT persons with children, and now 39 percent are parents. Getting married is often a first step to a family and more lesbians have children under 18 than gay men, 23 vs. just 7 percent. However, of Gen Ys 11 percent already have children and nearly half plan on a family in the future. Children are a big fiscal responsibility and more LGBT are taking that step. Respondents to the Prudential study are Millennial heavy with fewer Boomers than the general population. Though Prudential gives no explanation for the disparity skewing the average age of LBGT by five years less than the general population, those of us who lived through the 1980’s know the LGBT community lost most of a generation in the HIV epidemic.
In the 2012 survey LGBT people were more concerned about equality over economics and in 2016 flipped that becoming more concerned about state and national financial direction and less concerned about LGBT rights issues. We, like the general population, are concerned about equity market volatility and stubbornly low interest rates, a major hidden tax on savers. Times are changing and we feel differently about how we are doing financially. More of us feel as though we have financial freedom, 15 vs. 2 percent four years ago, yet in 2016 41 percent are struggling vs. 31 percent in 2016. Respondents having a hard time are Millennials and Gen Xs, and the hardship is linked to their work. Double the LGBT Millennials have experienced unemployment than the general population. Like the general population around four in ten say job loss and inflation weights heavily on them and their planning, though LGBT are even more concerned about debt, a dearth of employment opportunities and wage inequity, Wages are stable over the four years, though those earning $15,000 or less have grown from 12 to 23 percent. Debt has remained stable, about $10,000 non real estate debt per person. Across all generations participating in the study there is a great deal of anxiety. LGBT persons feel nervous, uncertain and even depressed about their financial future and the anxiety is linked to savings rates, retirement planning and at a base level, employment and wages. Those who have stable jobs, savings, and a plan for retirement feel more secure about their financial future; access to financial knowledge financial planning and professionals, as always, is important to financial success. Marriage equality has made our financial lives more predictable, though most LGBT people continue to experience a stagnant economy, a tough job market and lack of financial knowledge.

You are Welcome Here D
o you remember that moment in President Obama’s State of the Union address on January 20th, 2015 when he said, “...That’s why we defend free speech and advocate for political prisoners, and condemn the persecution of women, or religious minorities, or people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. We do these things not only because they're right, but because they make us safer."?
Although there are still some people that are fighting desperately to see the opposite happen, inclusiveness is clearly the way to go.

History was made that day and many of us got to experience that feeling. A pretty amazing feeling to be more accurate. It was the first time that a sitting POTUS mentioned, scratch that, included LGBT community in a State Of The Union address. Six months later, the Supreme Court ended the debate on marriage equality. Once again LGBT community were included. Although there are still some people that are fighting desperately to see the opposite happen, inclusiveness is clearly the way to go. This is precisely why the theme was chosen as a big part of the reinvention of the GLBX Council of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce, in early 2016 a new, refreshed logo was unveiled with the tagline, “The All Inclusive Council”. In the spirit of sharing our excitement for where the GLBX is headed as the allinclusive council, we thought this would be a good time to answer some questions that we get on a regular basis. Isn’t GLBX just a leads group? Although the GLBX started out as a leads group several years ago, it is much more than that now. The leads group is still a valuable component of the council but there are other benefits from membership. In addition to
monthly after-hours mixers - a great way to network, there are regular luncheons, joint events with other councils, volunteer opportunities with other organizations impacting the community, and being a GLBX Council member gives members access to over 1,300 Fort Lauderdale companies.
Is this the gay chamber? No. The GLBX is a council of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce. A council is a subset group within the main chamber that has reached a high number of members, strong participation and is influential in the community.
Do I have to be an LGBT business to be a member? No. The “X” in GLBX can mean whatever you identify as. The only requirement that must be met is that you have to be a member of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce to become a GLBX Council member. Come to a GLBX event to experience just how welcoming the environment is to everyone.
How can I get more involved in GLBX? Start by attending an event like one of the after-hours or a luncheon. If your industry is not already represented, you can become an active member of the leads group. Beyond that members have the opportunity to join GLBX committees which include: ▶ Community Outreach ▶ Events ▶ Communication/PR ▶ Equality Taskforce ▶ Artopia
Visit www.FTLchamber.com to find our events online and to register.
You can follow the GLBX on Facebook Facebook.com/fortlauderdaleglbx/ or you can contact the GLBX Council Chair, Karen Prescod at Karen@prescodlifeandhealth.com to obtain more information on how to become a member.

Business Connect Introducing the GFLGLCC’s Exclusive Referral Program
I
n an effort to continue to enhance the value provided to its members, the GFLGLCC - Greater Fort Lauderdale Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce rolled out some new benefits on June 1. One key item is the exclusive “Business Connect” program -- designed to facilitate strategic connections between members who share common interests and objectives. To date, the GFLGLCC’s efforts related to connecting members has largely been focused on utilizing the website and events such as monthly mixers and quarterly luncheons. While these provide a “passive platform” through which members can meet and connect, the new Business Connect program takes a more direct “hands-on” approach. Eligible members interested in participating in the program will first personally meet with the President/CEO of the Chamber or one of its Board Members to identify their business goals and objectives, their ideal client type and their industry focus. That, along with other key drivers will then be analyzed in the context of the GFLGLCC member base to determine the strategic relationships that makes the most business sense. From there, personal introductions are made between members. To demonstrate exactly how the program will work, consider this fictional example: an eligible member who provides a line of all natural, organic toiletries is interested in expanding business. During the initial planning meeting, it is decided that the best opportunities to grow their business through the Chamber are via hotels and resorts in the area. With 30 plus hotel and resort members at the Chamber, the focus shifts towards identifying those that could mutually benefit from an introduction. It is concluded that an email will be
sent to all 30 plus hotel and resort members from the Chamber on behalf of the member, followed up with phone calls to a short list of 10 that have the most promise. How do we arrive at this short list? By considering things like the ability of local management to make purchasing decisions for in-room amenities or gift shop inventories, any “intelligence” related to change that’s happening or anticipated that could result in a requirement for new product options, etc. Once the 10 have been identified, the goal is to ultimately facilitate an in-person introduction with as many of them as possible. This might occur at one of the monthly mixers, at a quarterly luncheon, at some other local event or at a brief meeting scheduled specifically for the purpose of a meet and greet. The example doesn’t end there! Through the analysis, let’s say that there are also two hotel management and consulting company members identified. By facilitating an introduction to those two members, additional opportunities may open up via their networks! As is demonstrated by the specificity of that fictional example, all program details will be custom tailored to each individual member that goes through the program. Great care will be taken to make meaningful introductions that have the potential to benefit both sides. For this reason, the specific number of introductions and approach to facilitating the connections will vary from member to member. The new program, which is still in the pilot phase, will be offered to its Corporate level members and above as part of their standard membership benefits. For more information and to join the GFLGLCC, please visit GoGayFortLauderdale.com/ or contact the GFLGLCC at 954-523-3500.
The GFLGLCC is the exclusive Broward County affiliate of the NGLCC - National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce. Their mission is to promote business and economic opportunities for the LGBT and LGBT-friendly community; be an advocate and resource for all member businesses that promote equality and to promote tourism with a unified approach by working with appropriate and related organizations.

iOS 10: The Best of the Latest iPhone Update Size queens rejoice; their “biggest” update yet! Chris Ayala
A
pple has released its newest operating system for the iPhone simply called iOS 10. It’s being touted as the best iOS release ever! Which means the first 9 times they touted that were lies. On June 13, the Cupertino company presented all the newest features on stage with a slightly-cheesy “Top 10 Countdown.” 10. Transcribe Voicemail No longer will you have to listen to voicemails, because the new iOS will transcribe them into a simple text format you can read and delete. I just can’t wait to see how it will transcribe the voicemails from drunk friends that I can barely understand. 9. Upgraded Siri Let’s face it, we’ve had an easier experience conversing with people in a foreign country than speaking with Siri. “Siri, where can I shop for a new bathtub?….Giving directions to the nearest bathhouse.” With iOS 10, the computer voice assistant should be smarter and more innovative. 8. Deleting Default Apps Since the first iPhone, we’ve had to look at that annoying Stocks app when most of us either don’t care or don’t own stocks. We will now be allowed to delete most of these apps that come pre-installed on your phone. Besides Stocks, over 20 other apps can be removed such as Calendar, FaceTime, Maps, Music, Podcasts, and Reminders. 7. Those Adorable Emojis Attendees of the Apple presentation gave an applause at the news of bigger emojis. Why don’t I get an applause from guys when I get bigger? Anyways. Besides more choices for emojis, there will be suggestions in your text of when to use an emoji. So maybe Grandma will stop sending the “laughing/crying” emoji during sad news.
Using phrases such as Redesigned, Rich, Quick Interaction, and Expanded was not only vague but reminded me of the description for the new Fleshlight. So I’m not going to confuse you with these indistinct updates. I weeded through the boring updates like the News App and HomeKit to bring you a top 10 list of the new features to look forward to. 6. Apple Music Lyrics are finally being added to your favorite music! Did you know Justin Timberlake says “Just put your hand on the glass” in Mirrors? I always thought he said “Just put your hand on my ass.” 5. Markup Photos Add text or draw all over your pictures without permission from a parent. 4. GIFs/Pictures/Videos in iMessaging A search feature has been implemented that offers you the ability to add funny GIFs, pictures, or videos. Or you could send what most of us intend to send…porn. 3. Phone Call Screening Whoever thought when Gwen Stefani sang about screening her phone calls, that our phones would be able to do it for us? Now, your iPhone will show if an unknown phone call could be from a solicitor. 2. Dude, Where’s My Car? Siri will now remember where your car is and give you directions (if your car is equipped with bluetooth). If only I could find my keys now… 1. Sleep Reminders Not getting enough sleep? I know this sounds like the beginning of a mattress commercial, but it’s not! Tell your Alarm app how many hours of sleep you need every night and what time you have to wake up. Then the new iOS will send reminders when it’s time to go to bed. Much easier than deal with a nagging husband.
Chris Ayala studied screenwriting and worked in television in Los Angeles before pursing his dream of writing novels. He currently resides in Fort Lauderdale where he’s published two series: the fantasy saga “The Last Days” and the gay concentration camp novella “Confinement.” 6.29.2016 •

s much as I don’t want to, I finally have to spill the beans about how much I enjoy going to Temple. I’m not at all religious (unless you count my devotion to food). I’m talking about Temple Street Eatery.
It’s not like one of my favorite places is a secret, in fact it’s very popular. My hesitation in sharing it with you is that it might become too popular and become a victim of its own success. However, since it is an off-shoot of the popular Christina Wan’s (it is co-owned by Wan’s nephew, Alex Kuk), I’m going to trust they can handle a little more publicity. Temple Street Eatery bills itself as a neighborhood dumpling and noodle bar, which isn’t quite correct, since much of the menu expands beyond noodles and dumplings. They can call it whatever they want as far as I’m concerned, as long as they keep turning out the same terrific pan-Asian fare they have since they opened a little more than a year ago. The concept could be more accurately described as casual Asian fast food. It dishes out classic Asian dishes with global influences. One example of that focus is my favorite dish on the menu; edamame falafel. Ground edamame beans replace chickpeas in the classic recipe. Fried to order and available as an appetizer, side dish or as a sandwich (served in a pita), these crunchy balls of

Other appetizer options include fried wonton “tacos” stuffed with shrimp and guacamole, garnished with gochujang cream, pineapple salsa and a variety of dumplings filled with a choice of ground chicken, pork, vegetables or minced shrimp. Available steamed or pan-fried and served with a choice of sauces. If you can’t decide which dumpling you want, opt for the Buddha Mix, a sample of one of each. As with other sections of the menu, daily specials often augment the menu offerings. If the mini-beef arepas are a special be certain to take advantage of adding them to your order. Rich, shredded beef tops smashed corn meal patties. Yum! Entrees come in the form of rice, noodle or soup bowls. My favorite rice bowl is bibimbop, with marinated beef sautéed with onions, carrots and scallions served atop a generous portion of rice (a choice of brown or white) and topped with a fried egg. If you’re opting for the bún rice noodle bowl,
you’ll be treated to a cold dish featuring two kinds of rice noodles topped with a choice of lemongrass chicken, tofu or pork (sub shrimp for a couple of bucks more) with pickled vegetables, marinated bean sprouts, lettuce, mint, cilantro and cucumbers in a nuoc cham vinaigrette. Soup options include miso with a choice of ramen or soba noodles, pork belly, scallions, bean sprouts and a seasoned hard-boiled egg or the wonton, which features nearly a dozen dumplings, ramen noodles and bok choy floating in an incredibly rich chicken broth. Any of the bowl dishes will serve as a filling meal and all average around $10. If you prefer sandwiches, you can go for a bulgolgi cheesesteak; featuring the same shredded beef as on the traditional dish, topped with sautéed onions and provolone cheese or the Katsu Burger; a panko-crusted patty that is at least two inches thick. While it’s not a true example of the traditional Vietnamese sandwich, Temple Street’s banh mi is damn good, with lemongrass chicken or pork, pickled daikon, jalapeño, cucumber and cilantro aioli (ask for some fresh cilantro as well). Salads are available in entrée and side potions ($8/$5). The Buddha is a good bet for a vegan with mixed greens, carrot, cucumber, cherry tomato, red onion, radish, pickled vegetables and peanut dressing. Meat-eaters can add chicken, pork or shrimp for a few dollars more. For something heartier, check out the Southeast chicken salad, which pairs shredded chicken, jalapeño, cabbage, mint, cilantro, radish, red onion and fried shallots.
With the exception of the edamame falafel, I’ve been underwhelmed by the side dishes. The Asian slaw is forgettable and the lemongrass fries tastes like plain old fries (and at $5 is pricey for the small portion). In addition to fountain drinks, Temple Street also offers a pretty good selection of sake, wine and craft beer, with budget-friendly happy hour prices from 5-7 p.m. At Temple Street you order at the counter and they bring the food to you. My one pet peeve about the place is that when you pay by credit card, they flip the screen around and the cashier watches as you select your tip option. Since you haven’t been served your food, how do you know what to tip? Or should you even need to tip? I don’t tip at McDonald’s and the only difference in the service at Temple Street is that someone delivers the food to my table instead of handing me my tray. Does that really deserve a tip? I can’t close out this column without commenting on one of Temple Streets’ main assets; people watching. The place in constantly filled with very attractive people, both behind the counter and populating the tables. A friend of mine says he always has the feeling that he’s sitting in the break room at a porn shoot! No doubt that will also be the case for Kitchen Four Twenty, opening next door to Temple Street Eatery. It is also owned by Christina Wan and when the new spot opens (if it hasn’t by the time you read this), it will offer focusing on modern American classics, serving breakfast and lunch in a diner-like setting.

Author Jim Colucci’s “Golden Girls Forever” is the definitive volume about the television series that remains popular with LGBT audiences.
'Golden Girls Forever' Thank You for Being a Book
J.W. Arnold We’ve all encountered “that” guy, the queen who can quote every line verbatim from every episode of “The Golden Girls.” I once dated one of those guys for about 10 months, just long enough to gain an annoying appreciation for the sitcom about four mature roommates that aired from 1985-92. Today, I’m engaged to another guy who always manages to find the reruns, whether they’re playing on the Lifetime, Logo, Hallmark or OWN networks. He’s a guy who, a few years ago when Lifetime tried to drop the series, began a vigorous email campaign to network executives. On any given day at any given hour, an episode is probably playing on one of our televisions. It’s hard to image a gay guy who can’t recall at least one of the wisecracks from strongwilled Dorothy (Bea Arthur), spacey Rose from St. Olaf (Betty White), lusty Southern Belle Blache (Rue McClanahan) or the wise cracking matriarch Sophia (Estelle Getty). That’s why author Jim Colucci’s new book, “Golden Girls Forever: An Unauthorized Look Beyond the Lanai,” is more of a guilty pleasure than the cheesecake the foursome regularly devoured on the screen. Colucci volume is less of a juicy tell all than an encyclopedic guide to the series, featuring more than 250 interviews with cast and crew with short synopses and analyses of all 180 episodes. Many of the revelations are anything but: It’s fairly common knowledge that Getty was younger than Arthur, who played her daughter. And Betty White, who had earlier portrayed the saucy Sue Ann Niven in “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” was originally cast as Blanche. Colucci answers many of the questions that have nagged fans—especially LGBT ones—
since the last episode originally aired nearly 25 years ago, like what happened to Coco, the gay houseboy in the pilot. Actor Michael Levin (who also happened to be straight) was such a hit with the studio audience during the taping of the pilot, producers became concerned his character might overshadow the other girls. Getty’s sharp tongued Sophia also presented a surprise to producers. Originally slated to be a recurring guest character, Sophia was quickly written into the series permanently. Some other fun facts to bore your friends who aren’t “Golden Girls” super fans: The show almost was titled, “Miami Nice,” a joke started at a network executives event playing off the popularity of “Miami Vice.” Even though the role was written for her, Arthur wasn’t enthusiastic about the series. McClanahan eventually talked her former “Maude” co-star into taking the role of Dorothy. The network wasn’t enthusasitic about Arthur, either. Execs were concerned that after playing a controversial, pro-abortion character in “Maude,” viewers would blur the distinction. The show’s iconic theme song, “Thank You for Being a Friend,” originally written and performed by Andrew Gold in 1978, was the second choice to open the show. It was re-recorded in a very short studio session by Cynthia Fee who amassed a small fortune in royalties for about two takes worth of work. Getty liked to shop at rummage sales, where she found Sophia’s signature boxy purse, and McClanahan included a clause in her contract allowing her to keep Blanche’s wardrobe after filming. These are just a few of the tidbits in Colucci’s 338-page book.
“Golden Girls Forever: An Unauthorized Look Beyond the Lanai” by Jim Colucci is published by HarperCollins and available from major book retailers. 40

Top 5 Openly Gay and Allied Christian Musicians Brittany Ferrendi
C
oming out of the closet in the Christian music world is no easy task. Being gay is a considered a sin to many religious people, so the backlash could be harsh whether coming out to family or the entire Christian music world. That’s what “Everyday Sunday” singer Trey Pearson faced this month after he wrote his coming out letter. And that’s what closeted Christian music artists long before him had to face after deciding to be open with their sexuality. But despite the fear they may face, some of these artists had the courage to speak up in support of the LGBT community, whether by coming out or becoming an open advocate. Here are the top five religious singers and musicians that took the rainbow plunge.
reply to his fans from all ends of the spectrum. “You're refuting yourself. You are headed nowhere fast friend. Consider and repent,” one twitter user told the singer. Fortunately for Haseltine, not all fans spoke out against his opinion – in fact, he received a lot of support. “I have received so many great messages from gay Christians,” he wrote. “You have encouraged me.” Vicky Beeching
Singer and songwriter Knapp revealed her sexuality in an interview with Christianity Today back in April 2010. She has since spoke out openly about her experiences coming out in the Christian music world. “It never occurred to me that I was in something that should be labeled as a ‘struggle,’” Knapp said during the Christianity Today interview. “The struggle I’ve had has been with the church, acknowledging me as a human being, trying to live the spiritual life that I've been called to, in whatever ramshackled, broken, frustrated way that I've always approached my faith.” Knapp started her career in 1994, selling over a million records between 1998 and 2002. But when she came out eight years later, many fans shunned her. Christian music stations stopped playing her music and bookstores took her albums off the shelves, according to Forbes. These days Knapp is no longer in the Christian music scene.
In 2014, Christian rock star Vicky Beeching disclosed her sexuality in an interview with The Independent. Beeching realized she was attracted to the same sex at a young age. When she was 16, she went to a Christian youth camp that attempted to exorcize her homosexuality. “I remember lots of people placing their hands on my shoulders and back and front, praying in tongues really loudly and then shouting things: 'We command Satan to let you go! Cast these devils out of you! We speak to you demon of homosexuality: let her go!,'" she told The Independent. The stress of hiding her sexuality affected her body. She was diagnosed with linear scleroderma morphea, an autoimmune disease that turns soft tissue into scarring and can cause epilepsy, blackouts or death. It was triggered by the deep trauma of trying to bury her attraction to the same sex, she said in the interview. During 18 months of chemotherapy, Beeching promised herself that she would come out by age 35. "What Jesus taught was a radical message of welcome and inclusion and love. I feel certain God loves me just the way I am, and I have a huge sense of calling to communicate that to young people.
Dan Haseltine
Marsha Stevens
The lead singer of 90’s Christian band Jars of Clay caused a small uproar on Twitter in 2014 for writing a series of tweets in support of gay marriage. “Not meaning to stir things up BUT... Is there a nonspeculative or non 'slippery slope' reason why gays shouldn't marry? I don't hear one,” Dan Haseltine wrote in one of his tweets. In the following few days, Haseltine continued to tweet and
Way back in the 80’s, before recent LGBT social movements came into play, Marsha Stevens came out of the closet. She faced similar issues as Knapp – Christian label Maranatha Music dropped her following her announcement, according to Forbes. “I was completely taken aback by the reaction,” Stevens said. “I spent about five years saying ‘I don’t need Jesus,’ but I absolutely do. I couldn’t make myself not be a Christian.”

Publishers dropped many of her concert bookings and her albums were removed from retail outlets. A few years following her coming out, she joined the LGBT-friendly Metropolitan Community Church as an active member. Since then, she has written songs for their general conferences for the past two decades. Ray Boltz Fort Lauderdale’s own Ray Boltz came out to his family in 2004. “Their reaction was incredible. They affirmed me and told me they loved me,” Boltz told SFGN in a 2010 interview. ““It was not easy coming out, but it was good. I had grown up in the Bible Belt, and when I was 19, I went to a Christian music concert that changed my life, and yes, I had some gay sexual experience as a teenager and I thought it was sinful but…for the next 30 years I had this great family and career and after 30 years I said to myself ‘This just isn’t working.’ I had been in counseling and on anti-depressants and then I finally came out to them.” Two years later, the artist, who sold 4.5 million records, made his sexuality public. “I was very well known in the Christian music world when I came out. I had some people tell me to buy a gun and shoot myself. Other people demanded that I return the music awards I had received. Some people mailed my CDs back to me. They never bothered to understand that I wasn’t going out and picking up hustlers during all those years. Some people hunted me down here and knocked on the door to give me a piece of their mind.” In 2015, SFGN followed up with Boltz for an update of his life. At the time of publication, the Christian music artist lived with his partner of eight years, Franco Sperduti. “I often get messages from people who thank me for coming out and say it gave them the courage to face the same reality,” he said. “Often they ask me for advice about how to handle the process of coming out to a spouse and children in the context of religion and faith. I never give advice about that. Everyone has to work that out for themselves. I only know that what I chose to do has brought me much happiness. I never would have imagined having eight grandchildren who love me and Franco!”

eed to get sweaty?
Work out in a full gym complete with machine weights, free weights, treadmills and more? Want to get sweatier? Rent a locker or a private room, or chill in one of the sex lounge areas equipped with full-length TV screens playing porn to get you in the mood to rub one out or "sling" it with someone you vibe with. Time for a cool off? Jump in "head"
first into our pool or rinse off in our new outdoor shower. Want to "steam" it back up again? Step into our sauna. Within seconds you will feel moist as heat engulfs your entire body from head to toe. Or maybe you are just looking for camaraderie? The Club offers a main TV lounge with big comfy seating, as well as Saturday and Sunday poolside lunches. Club Fort Lauderdale. It's the American sauna, plus more.

Now celebrating 34 years of operation, Club Fort Lauderdale offers the alternative to the gay hookup app. At the Club, there's no pressure of planned meet-ups. Do what you want, with whom you want, however long you want. Why bother with the exchange of pics on the apps? According to a survey by Grab Him, 71 percent of gay men find long-term love on hook-up apps. Get off the app, and check out the goods of your potential match live and in person. "We believe ourselves to be a big part of the gay community. We offer a welcoming, clothingoptional environment, 365 days a year, 7 days a week, 24 hours a day," said Kevin Bartnett, manager. Worried about not finding someone your own age? Forget about it. The age demographic ranges from 18 to 100, depending on the time of day, according to management. Check out the Club Fort Lauderdale website for pricing, specials and events, such as Res-Erection, a naked blackout event, on the first Saturday of every month at 10 p.m.
