needed to use the bathroom,” they told SFGN last year. So the two of them stopped at a public restroom as they headed home for the evening. As Logunov walked out of the restroom he was allegedly called a “faggot” in Spanish, punched, and then beaten unconscious. His boyfriend at the time, Chalarca, quickly intervened, but three more men allegedly jumped in and began to attack them both. “This was my first time going to [a] gay parade,” Chalarca said last year. Physically they’ve both recovered. The alleged attack was caught on camera and the four suspects have been charged with three counts of aggravated battery and a hate crime enhancement was added to the charges. Dennis Gonzalez Jr., the attorney for the four men, declined to comment about the ongoing case before the hearing. However, one of the accused, Lopez, wrote in February in a Facebook post, “False hate crime claims ain’t a joke. I know first hand!” Last year Gonzalez publicly defended his clients. “All four of my clients condemn acts of violence toward anyone whether it’s motivated by hate toward the gay community, toward nationality or anything of that nature,” he told The Washington Post. “They come out and condemn that. We don’t believe there was any type of animus toward the gay MEMBER community.” MEMBER
The four men made the news again this week when SFGN reported that they were introduced and recognized at SAVE’s annual Champions of Equality Gala in Miami on June 14. The now former executive director, Tony Lima, said on stage at the gala: “Finally, tonight we are joined by four young men wrongfully accused of a hate crime in Miami Beach last year. Juan, Adonis, Pablo, and Luis, who are joined by the wonderful gay parents of one of the boys … SAVE supports you in your fight for justice and we appreciate you being here with us tonight.” Once those comments were reported by SFGN and subsequently followed up on by multiple media outlets, a firestorm of controversy ensued with Lima being fired five days later on Monday. The state attorney’s office pushed back against Lima’s assertions. “The defendants in the case are not wrongly accused. We are aggressively pursuing the prosecution of the case,” said Terry Gonzalez-Chaveza, a spokesperson for the office. “We believe we have sufficient evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt the charges against them: Aggravated Battery with Prejudice/Weapon or Bodily Harm, Aggravated Battery, Assault with Prejudice/or on Religious Institution Grounds, and Assault. If that were not the case, the charges would have been dropped in the past.”

new trial date has been set for the four men accused of attacking a gay couple last year after the closing festivities of Miami Beach Pride. On the morning of Wednesday, July 3 the circuit court held a status conference in Miami on the matter. The case was continued until September, giving each party more time to conduct discovery and prepare their respective cases. The new dates are Sept. 5 for a status conference, at which time both parties will update the court on their progress in bringing the case to a resolution. Should there be no plea agreement, the court set Sept. 16 as the trial date. The four defendants — Adonis Diaz, Juan Carlos Lopez, Luis Alonso Piovet, and Pablo Reinaldo Romo-Figueroa — all in their early 20s, have pled not guilty. The alleged attack took place when Rene Chalarca, 33, and Dmitry Logunov, 33, were leaving a public bathroom in Lummus Park in Miami Beach on April 8, 2018. “We were walking and holding hands and

State Board of Elections followed suit. “I think that government forms should reflect the diversity of the people that the government is serving and representing, and this is one way of reflecting that,” said Del. Julie Palakovich Carr, a Montgomery County Democrat, according to the Los Angeles Times. The state’s election board voted unanimously to offer the third option.
New research from global public opinion data company, YouGov, found that 18 to 24 year olds are eight times more likely to identify as bisexual than the same age group was in 2015. In 2015, only 2 percent of people identified as bisexual, but when polled in 2019, 16 percent were bisexual, according to The Telegraph. And 18 to 24 year olds are half as likely to be gay than they were in 2015.
“These 18-24 year olds feel less pressure either to hide who they are, or to declare themselves totally one way or totally the other. Bisexual people and those who are gender-fluid - often get pressured from both sides to be ‘one or the other’, which is unfair and frankly biphobic,” Steve Wardlaw, chairman and co-founder of diversity insurance company Emerald Life told The Telegraph.

Gay lawyer running for Tunisian president
Malaysians tell minister to resign over gay sex tape
Mounir Baatour, an openly gay lawyer, announced on June 25 that he would be running for Tunisian president. Baatour is the first openly gay man running for president in the mostly Muslim North African country, according to The Jerusalem Post. Tunisian authorities are looking to use Sharia law to shut out the LGBT community, and the country can punish sodomy with up to three years in prison. “We are proud of the absolute equality of all Tunisians no matter what their religion, color, gender, language [or] sexual identity. Tunisia needs a democratic agenda that can include the different identities, cultures, beliefs and languages of this country,” Baatour wrote on Facebook, according to The Jerusalem Post.

Malaysia’s Economic Affairs Minister Mohamed Azmin Ali was accused of being in a leaked gay sex tape, and 200 people protested in the capital, calling for him to resign. Gay sex is illegal in Malaysia, and even though the minister maintains the video is fake, the protestors said the video “embarrased the nation,” according to Gay Star News. Malaysia’s main opposition party leader Lokman Noor Adam led the protest, and has prompted police to investigate the video. “I made a police report to ask them to investigate who spread the video. I also asked the police to investigate who the actors were in the video. Why? Because it is a crime,” Adam said, according to Free Malaysia Today. “We do not want

Heathrow Airport places pride ads near Brunei airline
First gay woman joins Australian House of Representatives
Heathrow Airport in London placed pride ads near the Royal Brunei Airlines check-in counter, as a protest against Brunei’s death penalty for gay sex, according to Newsweek. The Sultan of Brunei owns Royal Brunei, and decided to implement Sharia law, which led to worldwide backlash involving celebrity-led boycotts of Brunei-owned businesses. The Sultan later said the nation will not impose the death penalty. “There are 80 million international travelers coming through here, very often to countries where it’s illegal—or even punishable by the death penalty— to be gay. We need to stand up for our values,” John Holland-Kaye, CEO of Heathrow Airport said, according to Newsweek.

Angie Bell, a businesswoman, author, and musician, became the first openly gay woman to join the House of Representatives in Australia as part of the Liberal party. Bell, 51, understands the weight of her rise to the House, but says she wants to be remembered for more, according to SBS News. Bell says she was the first in her family to attend college on scholarship, breaking out of her low socioeconomic background. “I think it’s important that as many minority groups as possible are represented in the House of Reps. It is the House of Representatives. I think it should be representative of the community in Australia,” Bell told SBS. “It’s very humbling that I was the person chosen to represent the community.”

Queer Liberation March retraces route of
world’s first Pride march Lou Chibbaro Jr. Washington Blade
T
he Queer Liberation March, the second of two marches in New York City on Sunday that commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, drew more than 45,000 marchers according to one of its lead organizers. Longtime lesbian activist Ann Northrop, who is among the leaders of the Reclaim Pride Coalition, which organized the queer Liberation March as an alternative to the official New York City Pride March, said organizers believe the Queer march was highly successful and are considering making it an annual Pride event. The march followed the same route that the world’s first ever LGBT Pride march took in June 1970. It was organized by activists who were inspired by the now famous Stonewall riots that erupted in New York’s Greenwich Village in response to a police raid on the Stonewall Inn gay bar on June 28, 1969. That first march was named the Christopher Street Day Liberation March after the street where the Stonewall Inn is located and where the rioting began and continued for several days and was credited with launching the modern LGBT rights movement. Northrop and others involved with the Reclaim Pride Coalition said they wanted the Queer Liberation March to retrace the route of the 1970 march, which travelled from the site of the Stonewall Inn to Central Park, where a rally was held, using 6th Avenue to reach the park. Organizers of Sunday’s Queer Liberation March and its own rally held in Central Park noted they chose not to allow floats, including the large corporate sponsored floats that participated in the official New York City Pride March, saying such displays were not in keeping with the atmosphere of protest and rebellion associated with Stonewall. “This exceeds our wildest expectations,” Northrop told the Blade at the rally. “This was spectacular, and we’re thrilled that everybody took the leap of faith with us to come out, because this was a whole new thing,” she said. “And we just organized it from the ground up. And we had no idea how many would put themselves on the line and show up. And they did,” Northrop said. “They did with full hearts and they did with total creativity.”

Northrop said the city’s parks department required that the rally take place in the Great Lawn, which is located one mile from where the march entered Central Park at 6th Avenue, making the total length of the march four miles. She said organizers will consider shortening the march if organizers decide to hold the Queer Liberation March again next year and in subsequent years. “Everyone’s talking about it,” she said in discussing whether another queer march should take place. “Now that we’ve seen this become a reality and people can believe it’s possible I hope then we would just grow bigger and bigger every year and that the corporate takeover of Pride would gradually phase out.” Washington Blade courtesy of the National LGBTQ Media Association.

under the spotlight after Rapinoe blasted President Trump and said she would not visit the White House if the U.S. Women’s National Team won the World Cup. Trump responded by ranting about Rapinoe on Twitter, telling her to “win first before she talks” and “finish the job.” The president then extended a White House invitation “win or lose” to the U.S. national team. Trump was also upset with Rapinoe because she knelt during the U.S. national anthem in support of Colin Kaepernick’s silent protest against police brutality. All this presidential drama was just too much for Bird, who penned a 2,900-
word article for the Players’ Tribune titled, “So the President F*cking Hates My Girlfriend.” “I mean, some of it is kind of funny..... but like in a REALLY? REALLY? THIS GUY??? kind of way,” Bird, a star on the Seattle Storm, wrote. “It would be ridiculous to the point of laughter, if it wasn’t so gross.” They’ve been in the spotlight before Bird said that, while she was inclined to laugh at the ridiculousness of it all, the online hate she and Rapinoe have gotten from strangers has been unsettling. Bird, who won three WNBA titles and
four Olympic gold medals, said Trump’s criticism would not get to Rapinoe. “You just cannot shake that girl,” she wrote. “She’s going to do her thing, at her own damn speed, to her own damn rhythm, and she’s going to apologize to exactly NO ONE for it.” This isn’t the first time that this sports power couple has made headlines. Haus of QUOTA Celebrates First Anniversary Deon C. Jefferson

alm Beach County closed out Pride Month with the one-year anniversary of Lake Worth Beach’s newest organization, Haus of QUOTA. Founded a year ago, HOQ is a collective organization of artists and performers that aim to unite the queer community in Palm Beach County with engaging events. “QUOTA” is an acronym for “Queerest Of Them All,” because the organization aims to stand out from traditional queer-friendly groups. “I still can’t believe it’s been one year already,” said Kristie Gould, stage manager for HOQ. “All we wanted was for our community to have a safe space to party. So celebrating one year feels good. It’s amazing to see our hard work pay off.” To celebrate its anniversary, HOQ hosted its monthly LGBT open mic night last weekend. Held at the Book Cellar in Lake Worth Beach, the event produced a packed house full of members of the community. Participants shared love stories, performed comedy acts about addiction, serenaded Broadway tunes, and recited poetry — then were treated to birthday cake in recognition of the group’s anniversary. “Miss Mocha [HOQ’s ‘mother’] and Big

SZA [HOQ’s head of hospitality] hosted a small drag show in their living room last June, then as more and more people started showing up to the events, they moved the party to the back yard,” said HOQ’s public relations head from Lake Worth Beach Emma Sue Harris. “QUOTA, over the last few months, has grown into a small living room, now we partner with local venues for our monthly parties.” In addition to the open mic night, HOQ recently held its “Queerest of the Ball!” party at The Box Gallery in West Palm Beach, hosted by Syphora Styff and Davianna. Over 20 performers showed up to exhibit the many themes of the night, including “Flower Power,” “50 Shades of Gay,” “Technicolor: The Gay TV Show,” and the crowd favorite, “The Age of Aqueerius.” “I was honored to have QUOTA at The
Box Gallery,” said gallery owner Rolando Chang Barrero. “It was one of the most amazing experiences. It was a house full of vibrant and loving, creative individuals where all social constructs of gender, sexuality, race, and class were erased at least for the night. A true celebration of self empowerment like no other I have witnessed!” All in a year, HOQ registered as a nonprofit organization, marched in this year’s Palm Beach Pride parade, and performed at events like Compass’ Youth Equality Prom and the annual chili cook-off at Penny’s at the Duke. And the organization has even slated an upcoming appearance on the local “Hola Palm Beach Talk Show.” Its members also established monthly book clubs and open mic nights they plan on continuing long past their oneyear mark.

ompass and Palm Beach County Victim Services have teamed up to raise awareness of LGBT-related sexual assault and domestic violence. The two organizations officially partnered earlier this year to promote each others’ services. Their most recent project is a billboard and bus stop campaign stamped with a simple message: “Sexual assault can happen to anyone.” Although Palm Beach County Victim Services treats people of all genders and orientations, Compass is helping them incorporate more LGBT-inclusive messaging. “LGBT [sexual assault/domestic violence claims] can often be disregarded because of their status, because they’re not heterosexual,” said Lucas O’Ryan, Compass’ transgender youth coordinator. “People are already intimidated to report those things — and when you’re part of a marginalized community, it makes it even harder.” Along with the new digital billboard and posters across Lake Worth, Compass has also trained the Palm Beach County Victim “People are already intimidated to report those things — and when you’re part of a marginalized community, it makes it even harder.” - Lucas O’Ryan,
Compass’ transgender youth coordinator
Services staff on cultural competency and LGBT terminology. According to the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), LGBT people face higher rates of sexual violence than heterosexual people do. In the U.S., 47 percent of transgender people are sexually assaulted at some point — and the percentage increases if they’re a person of color, the HRC found in a survey. Another survey from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found other instances of how LGBT sexual assault rates differ: •

•
22 percent of bisexual women have been raped by an intimate partner, compared to 9 percent of heterosexual women 40 percent of gay men and 47 percent of bisexual men have experienced sexual violence other than rape, compared to 21 percent of heterosexual men 44 percent of lesbians and 61 percent of bisexual women experience rape, physical violence, or stalking by an intimate partner, compared to 35 percent of heterosexual women
“With this LGBT-friendly messaging, they would hopefully know that they’re included,” O’Ryan said. SFGN reached out to Palm Beach County Victim Services, but has not received a response as of publication time.

O
K, so maybe he did not. Maybe this was the wrong headline to post, but give me some leeway. On a cloudy afternoon in July, in the summer of 2019, let history record that a lot of gay men were getting very wet on the Fort Lauderdale beach. And none of them were wearing very many clothes. What they were doing was having a very big pool party with plastic swans and Corona beer, generously poured by the Alibi Bar, one of their sponsors. Except the pool was the Atlantic Ocean, and the party was held on the very gay Sebastian Street Beach in Fort Lauderdale. The Flock Fest Float-a-Thon has flourished favorably. Even Richard Gray was there, though I am not sure if he was preparing for his mini marathon the next day, or representing the Convention and Visitor’s Bureau. Terry Di Carlo and his husband Bill Huelsman went from being Queens of the NY Stonewall Parade one week ago to just being queens on the Fort Lauderdale Beach the next; from wearing sequins in a march to tank tops on the ocean. Mayor Dean Trantalis was there too, but I am sure just to show off a new bathing suit probably given to him by an Israeli ambassador in Tel Aviv in exchange for a good room at the W. Don’t know, Dean is like Mayor Pete Buttigieg, and does not return our calls anymore. It’s OK; Kamala Harris is going to win anyway. California Kitchens was there as well, giving out pizza and chocolate chip cookies, a weird match I guess I will have to have the SFGN food reviewer, Ric Karlin, cover in a separate issue. This Flock Fest event of men in plastic tubes riding swans and flamingoes was engineered by one Steve Crawford, and is becoming more
popular than the latest 2 for 1 at Hunters. Oh wait, I think Mark Seymour was there too, fresh from yet another victory in a dancing competition in Palm Springs. It’s just pretty hard to tap dance on the sand. One of the beneficiaries of this past weekend’s events was United Dog Rescue, a nonprofit on Commercial Boulevard in Oakland Park offering canines a home. Adopt. Adopt. Adopt. United Dog Rescue was at Flock Fest offering up cute T-shirts reading, “This t-shirt saves lives.” A couple of guys I saw shirtless should have bought some immediately, if not sooner. No, I kid you. This is our life, for good or bad, wet or dry. While it is true that the crowd was older, and looked a little like the guys who go to Happy Hour at Tropics Grille, the event was fun and festive. I mean, what’s better than a barbecue or a beach party with your friends, putting politics and the world aside? After all, this was the July 4 weekend. Even in overcast weather, it was a time to celebrate our country, our community, and our lives. While there was of course the mandatory gay VIP section, which you could pay for, it’s still on a public beach. The event is FREE, and let’s face it, sometimes, girls AND boys just want to have fun — at any age. Still, there is a story here. There was a time on the Fort Lauderdale beach when gay men and women were not allowed to enjoy themselves. Not too many years ago, police were patrolling the beach, but not to protect you. Yes, there was a time when you could actually get arrested for just verbally propositioning another man, charged with “offering for a lewd act.” There was a time on Fort Lauderdale beach when the only section safe for gay men was

within the perimeter of the Marlin Beach Hotel. There was a time when Pride Fort Lauderdale could not have a parade on the beach, let alone one bigger than any other. Our community has grown. Now we prosecute the gay bashers, not the gay men or women. It’s about time. Justice is on our side. But even though the world changes, bad things still happen to good people. Coming home from the Miami Beach Pride festival a year ago, two gay men were allegedly attacked and beaten up by four accused gay bashers. The suspects were found and arrested. The accused criminals are being prosecuted by the Dade County State Attorney’s office. The case is next set for September, and we report on the prosecution in this week’s paper on page 2. Please read the story. The truth is no, Donald Trump did not masturbate at Flock Fest, and I did not write this editorial just to celebrate this fun new beach party called Flock Fest. The truth is I wrote the catchy headline and this editorial to ask you to take a moment and appreciate the importance of an independent gay press in your community. I doubt if the Miami Herald or the Sun Sentinel sent its staff to cover Flock Fest. From Stonewall exhibits to HIV counseling
programs, the LGBT community does a lot the straight press will never cover. It can barely do its own. SFGN shines a light on our community. Sometimes, it illuminates. Unfortunately, other times, it burns. Sometimes we rave about a restaurant. Other times, we rant. Either way, SFGN is here for you, providing a forum and platform for you that no one else does. The LGBT community is blessed with a cross section of generous nonprofits working for a greater good. SAVE in Miami- Dade, since 1993, has been one of the good ones. It stands for Safeguarding American Values for Everyone. This year, at SAVE’s annual dinner, its executive director slipped up big time. With the case against the four accused gay bashers still pending in the criminal courts, he introduced the defendants to the partying and inattentive crowd as a group of “wrongfully accused” boys. It wasn’t his call to make. That’s what a jury is for. While the mainstream press ignored the story because it went over the head, it was SFGN, your gay press, which brought it to light. And that’s how you know Terry Di Carlo showed up at Flock Fest in a tank top, too. No one else would have. We are there for you, wet and wild, or high and dry.

etween June 12-21 I took my first trip to Israel in 25 years. I was fortunate to be invited to join the tour of A Wider Bridge, a North American organization working through education, advocacy, relationship-building and grant-making to create equality in Israel by expanding LGBT inclusion in Israel, and equality for Israel by cultivating constructive engagement with Israel. AWB does this by bringing LGBTA activists to Israel, both Jews and non-Jews. They also sponsor trips to the U.S. by LGBT activists from Israel, so that there is a mutual increase of understanding of the lived experience of both communities. The last time I was in Israel there was no concept of a traffic jam. There weren’t enough cars and few major roads. Most of the buildings had been built in the 1920s, and food and housing were affordable. There were no separation walls, and even Jewish visitors to the Dome of the Rock could walk up the dirt path and tour the mosque, even being permitted to climb down the circular stair and touch the actual stone. There was a small but strong underground LGBT community, mostly meeting in each other’s homes. Today Israel smells like roasted coffee beans and roasted sesame seeds. Even the enormous amount of development and new construction, new roads and fleets of cars can overwhelm this essential tam (taste, flavor) of the country. There is a wide diversity of folks on the streets, and who you will tend to see will depend on whether you are in the major cities of Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, or Haifa, where you will see the secular and modern, or traditionally religious, or a wide mix, respectfully. Tel Aviv is Israel’s most cosmopolitan city and the most welcoming for LGBT people. The annual Pride Festival drew over 200,000 celebrants, a very public announcement that LGBT people live, work and play publicly and proudly in this seaside city that has evolved into one of the major international destinations for LGBT visitors. I came away from my trip with two major impressions. The first was how LGBT Israelis refer to themselves as the “proud” community. They do this as a way of being inclusive of the wide range of gender identities and the general fluidity of sexual attraction that cannot easily be contained or represented by the latest iteration of LGBTQIA+. I experienced this kind

of pride with the wise and brave individuals who shared their life experiences with me on this trip. We were Jewish and not Jewish, Christian, secular, cis and transgender, people of color, Hispanic, white, Zionist, non-Zionist, and those who were still deciding. Every day we shared our impressions of our visits to LGBT institutions and discussions with Israeli and Palestinian leaders. We all agreed that the Pride Parade was extraordinary, that we could feel the power of the living history of the Old City and the holy places such as the Kotel and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. The other was our visit to Ramallah and the Al Amari refugee camp. It was this visit that made clear we were not in agreement on how we understood the situation between the Israelis and Palestinians. You can see from the picture of the entrance to the refugee camp that there are no bars or gates, or police. Anyone can come and go freely. Anyone who lives there is given a subsidy to cover regular living costs, including rent and utilities. Still, it is not a pleasant place, with scattered garbage and a lack of even simple adornments of flowerpots on windowsills. The ride from Jerusalem to the airport took us on Highway 60, a new road that goes through Israel and the territories. There are places where it is lined with walls, built like the other walls to stop cars and people from being shot at or rammed. Even understood as necessary, the walls are heartbreaking. I know that there is little agreement on how to solve the current crisis between the Israelis and Palestinians. I also know that Israel is and has been the intersection of the three Abrahamic religions and figures more in history than almost any other place in the world. Amazing and miraculous events are centered here in Jewish, Christian, and Moslem theology, which live in our imaginations alongside the images of daily life. If it will take a miracle to solve this problem, then this place with its history of miracles is where it will occur.

Trans Talk
An Ode to all Trans People Who have

ook at how fucking resilient we are. Look how strong. Look at all the shit we’ve gone through and we’re still here.
Every single trans person I know has been through traumatic experiences. Family rejection, healthcare discrimination, job loss, sexual assault, denial of services, substance abuse, and the list goes on. Being trans is hard. It’s not “fun” or “trendy.” It’s not a “new thing.” It’s not the latest fad. It’s repeatedly demanding people treat you like you’re human. It’s constantly explaining yourself. It’s having religion thrown in your face. It’s repeating your truth over and over when your grandmother just won’t use the right pronouns or name. It’s exhausting. Sometimes we hit our limit. And that’s when we get mad. I’m tired of seeing black trans women murdered. I’m done hearing the stories my transmasculine friends tell me in support groups about how they have to pick between medically transitioning or their job. I don’t want to hear another story about a trans friend who can’t stay with their biological family anymore because they make them feel like absolute shit but they don’t have any other place to go. Someone called me at work yesterday looking for housing for a “man who identifies as female.” So she’s a female then. Know that our resilience only goes so far. We are fighting everyday. And at some point you just get tired. Not only is it exhausting to have to face the trauma of being trans in the real world everyday, but then you come to an LGBT space, and it’s terrible there, too. I’m tired of white gay cis men leading the fight on transgender issues because trans people aren’t “articulate” enough, or “savvy” enough, or the right skin color, or don’t have the education, or they don’t dress appropriately, or they don’t know how fundraising works, or they haven’t been doing this work long enough. It is bullshit.
We are fighting everyday. And at some point you just get tired.

Our real world experiences as trans people more than qualifies us to lead the fight on trans issues. So step aside and let us lead the way. Let us tell you what we need. We know better than anybody how to help our community. So if you’re a member of the LGBT community but you aren’t trans, you don’t get a pass to ask a trans person personal and invasive questions just because we fall under the same sexual orientation and gender identity minority umbrella. And you don’t get to speak
for trans people because you have trans friends, or do trans work, or even have a trans partner. And you don’t get to tell us what we need or how we need to ask for it to get the respect and humanity we deserve. If you’re trans and reading this, I know you’re tired. I know your resilience only keeps you going for so long. I know you need a break from being you. Because I feel the same way all the time. It’s OK to get angry, it’s OK to be exhausted, it’s OK to wish you weren’t trans anymore. We didn’t get to choose this life. Yet, here we are, fighting anyway.

fter four years of toil and hundreds of minutes of soccer at the 2019 Women’s World Cup, it all came down to Megan Rapinoe. To the stoic co-captain. To the transcendent personality, the face of the U.S. women’s national team — and now, after 90 minutes in Lyon, a two-time world champion, also winner of the Golden Boot for her six goals and three assists in seven games. She also received the trophy for the best player of the tournament. After a tense hour-long scoreless struggle in Sunday’s World Cup final against Netherlands, Rapinoe stepped up to the penalty spot. Her conversion broke Dutch resistance, and ultimately clinched a second consecutive title for the U.S. It was her 50th international goal and the U.S. never relinquished the lead, (final score 2-0 US). An amazing group of women, true game changers, bold, brash, arrogant, never apologetic, they brought the cup home, brimming with a beautiful mix of character, fashion, history, politics, and gender awareness. A definite tipping point. In a country obsessed with male sports and where soccer usually ranks behind baseball, football, hockey, and basketball, women’s soccer rules the world again for an incredible fourth time. They were the best team at the World Cup, and are the best team in the world. After seven consecutive victories, they’ll remain on top of it for four more years. The symbol and icon of this team is Megan Rapinoe and her lavender hair. She can now share all her trophies with her girlfriend
Suzanne Brigit Bird, an American-Israeli professional basketball player for the Seattle Storm of the Women’s National Basketball Association. She is a three-time WNBA Finals winner, in 2004, 2010, and 2018. They will need a longer mantelpiece to fit them all. Rapinoe is not afraid of rocking the boat or ruffle feathers both on the field and off. In fact she is standing by her refusal to visit the White House if invited. The stance of the star and co-captain was criticized by some — but Rapinoe, 34, says her dissent is patriotic. “I think that I’m particularly and uniquely and very deeply American,” Rapinoe told ESPN. “If we want to talk about the ideals that we stand for, all the songs and the anthem and sort of what we were founded on, I think I’m extremely American.” Rapinoe made headlines late last month after video footage showed her saying she would not go “to the f—ing White House” if the team wins the World Cup. In her interview with ESPN, Rapinoe — an activist who has spoken out in support of LGBT rights and gender equality, against racism and more — said that she would implore “detractors” to “look hard into what I’m actually saying and the actions that I’m doing.” President Donald Trump responded with a series of tweets directed at Rapinoe. “I am a big fan of the American Team, and Women’s Soccer, but Megan should WIN first before she TALKS! Finish the job!” Well Mr. President, they finished the job in style. Well done ladies!

Why Melissa McCarthy Should
NOT play Ursula Carlos Farinas
I
n case you haven’t heard, Melissa McCarthy is in talks, or was already selected to play, Ursula in Disney’s forthcoming liveaction film “The Little Mermaid.” Whilst all my friends and most of the Disney fandom celebrated because we at least got some kind of confirmation that “The Little Mermaid” liveaction is happening, I have mixed feelings. That being said, I am absolutely thrilled that the preproduction process is finally happening! “The Little Mermaid,” much like many others (especially us in the LGBT community), is my favorite trilogy of movies. Whenever I am feeling down and in the dumps, there is nothing like some good ol’ ganja, food, and “The Little Mermaid” trilogy for me personally. (Pictured is me with the Ariel painting I made. BTW it glows in the dark. I’m telling you I have an unhealthy obsession with “The Little Mermaid.” I also have a “Little Mermaid” shrine. Don’t judge me.) Eventually, in life, I learned that “The Little Mermaid” had quite a lot of help from the LGBT community. So much so, that one of the characters was literally inspired by a drag queen — Divine. Divine is the inspiration behind the character that we come to love, Ursula. So much so that Divine herself was even in talks to bring Ursula Image via Divine, Facebook / Ursula is copyright of Disney.

to life by voicing her, before the legendary Patt Carroll. However, she unfortunately passed away shortly after the release of “Hairspray” in 1988. But if you compare footage of both Ursula and Divine, you’d see that Divine is Ursula and Ursula is Divine. There is absolutely no doubt about that. “The Little Mermaid” is actually one of Disney’s most prized and cherished films. “The Little Mermaid” actually rescued Disney from its “Bronze Age” or more commonly known as Disney’s “Dark Age.” Launching the Disney “Renaissance” era where we have films like “Aladdin,” “Beauty and The Beast’” and “The Lion King.” There goes that little Disney fact for you all who did not know. So my problem with McCarthy playing the character is that Ursula is probably one of the few characters Disney has that was inspired by LGBT culture, so she should be played by a drag queen and not a cisgender woman. McCarthy is an iconic actress and there is no shade towards her. However, if McCarthy is really an LGBT ally she needs to back down and have a serious discussion
with Disney and tell them to give the role to a drag queen with strong acting skills to play Ursula. RuPaul, Ginger Minj or Monet X Change could easily play this role. Disney has been queer baiting us recently with their films. Gay couples kissing for five frames in “Star vs. the Forces of Evil” on Disney Channel is not representation. Lefou having three frames of footage at the end of “Beauty and The Beast” dancing with a dude is not representation and in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, “Avengers: Endgame” having the first openly gay character played by Joe Russo is not representation, his character didn’t even have a name. It’s queerbaiting and annoying. Disney has a big LGBT fanbase and many LGBT employees so you’d think they would care enough and give us this type of major representation, in a major film. (By the way, yes I am aware of the first openly gay character on Disney Channel, I think that’s amazing.) Ursula was literally inspired by a drag queen and it only makes sense that in the live action film a drag queen should play Ursula.
Divine herself was even in talks to bring Ursula to life by voicing her.

Thanks to Dolly’s Dream Tank’s adoption fee is sponsored and he gets to go home with the supplies needed to settle in his new home.
The adoption fee for dogs over 6 months is $100 and felines over 6 months are $30. When you adopt from the Humane Society of Broward County the dogs and cats are spayed or neutered, microchipped, receive preliminary vaccinations, cats are feline leukemia tested, and dogs over 7 months are tested for heartworm. They also receive a flea/tick preventative, a 10-day limited health care plan from VCA Animal Hospitals, 30 days of Trupanion Pet Insurance and a bag of Purina ONE pet food. Comings and Goings Latest food updates in the area
T
o paraphrase the words of Dorothy Gale, “Restaurants come and go so quickly here.”
Naked Grape closed with a sign announcing remodeling and then a week later a “For Rent” sign went up in the window. Mind Your Manors was closed on Pride Day and has been shuttered since with a sign indicating repairs were being done — you can draw your own conclusions. The Grille on the Drive has been sold and the new owners (the same folks who bought Scandals) wasted no time adding their touch, knocking down the wall between the cabaret room and main bar and dining room. They’ve changed a few other things; eliminating lunch service and converting the Garden Room back into a bar, but thankfully, kept many of the much-loved staff (so far, at least). Adding some much-needed diversity to the dining options in Wilton Manors is Almacen de Empanadas, which as you may have guessed, specializes in empanadas. In fact Almacen means warehouse in Spanish. It’s located in the space formerly occupied by the short-lived Art Café, 2041 Wilton Dr. I can’t report on the quality of the empanadas because when I stopped by, they had run out of product. I’ll do a full-fledged review after they’ve been open a while. You’d think off-season would be a slow time for new restaurant openings, but not so. Several new places have opened their doors (or will soon) during the height of summer. Rather than slave in the kitchen or sweat over a grill, you might want to check out some of these new dining options.

steamed buns with meat or seafood filling. Lunches run about $10-$15 and include classic, stir-fry, curry and noodle dishes as well as poke bowls and dim sum platters. Lunch specials also include a free cup of miso soup or a salad, and for an extra buck, they’ll throw in a spring roll. The expanded dinner menu entrees range from $16-$20 and include ramen, duck and seafood dishes, hot pots and a wider range of appetizers. CAO, 1535 N. Federal, next door to Bangkok Bistro, is not only a clever three-letter acronym (Cuban-American original), it is also the last name of the Cao family (the founders of legendary Vicky Bakery), who owns and operates this local mini-chain of Cuban bakeries (eight locations in South Florida). The menu features classics, such as; croquettas, empanadas, traditional Cuban sandwiches, and pastelitos (pastries). It has taken over the space formerly occupied by Rubio’s. Tony Cao, whose grandparents, Antonio and Gelasia Cao, opened the first Vicky Bakery in 1972 has, with his familiy’s blessing converted all the Vickey Bakeries to CAO and he says, “We want to be the Dunkin’ Donuts of Cuban pastries.”
You’d think off-season would be a slow time for new restaurant openings, but not so.
Bangkok Bistro, 1527 N. Federal, specializes in Thai and Asian street food. In an unusual turn for an Asian restaurant, Bangkok Bistro serves breakfast (until 3 p.m. daily). Some of the dishes are Asian twists on classic breakfast fare (fried eggs with toast, eggs with bacon and Thai sausage and an omelet), while other dishes are more typical of what folks in Asia eat to start the day. There’s a Thai rice dish known as jook — a bowl of rice topped with an egg, and dim sum dishes such as; pork or beef gyoza, shrimp shu-mai, crispy chive cake and
Flan at CAO Bakery & Cafe.
Playa Bowls, 1615 N. Federal, has taken over the space formerly occupied by Starbucks, which moved to a bigger location up the street. The 65-store national chain manages to make a go of it serving up what are basically breakfast bowls. The chain was founded by a couple of surfers and still maintains that mentality. The bowls are a combination of a base, such as chia pudding, blended fruits or vegetables and toppings such as granola, peanut butter, berries, nuts and trendy “super foods” such as bee pollen, spirulina and wheat grass. Bowls range in price from $8-$12, smoothies are a few bucks less. It takes nerve to open a barbecue spot where another one bit the dust just months before. But that hasn’t stopped the folks at Fat Boyz from doing so in the space formerly occupied by Red Cow, 1025 N. Federal. Maybe the fact that they boast “Kids Eat Free” (with the purchase of an adult entrée) will draw some. It
would do just the opposite for many. There are some other openings planned for the near future, if they haven’t already done so by the time you read this. TooJay’s, which opened its location on Federal after much anticipation, and has been doing great business, is also opening another location at the new Dania Pointe Mall, just off I-95 in Hollywood. Mia Cake House and Moishe’s Montreal Deli are opening at The Shoppes at Deerfield on Powerline and Hillsboro in Deerfield Beach. Lisabet Summa, one of the only women in the country to co-own a major restaurant group, Big Time Restaurant Group (Louis Bossi, City Oyster, Rocco’s Tacos) is opening a new restaurant, named for her, on Atlantic Ave. in Delray Beach. The menu was inspired by her travels in Italy. Bokamper’s Sports Bar & Grill has a new menu, offering items including the vegan Beyond Burger, mac and cheese balls,
Hungry for more?
southwest chicken eggrolls, petite angus sirloin and churrasco steaks, turkey club sandwiches, crispy fish tacos, turkey burgers, homestyle meatloaf, and warm chocolate chip brownie sundaes. However, not all is good news. Spatch Peri Peri Chicken has gone feet up at its location at 3848 N. Federal after a run that lasted a little more than two years. The location at 468 N. Federal Highway is still doing strong business after opening a year ago. Midici Pizza formerly at 510 N Federal, and its neighbor, Mellow Mushroom at 525 N Federal have also both closed after a short run, although other locations are still operating. We’re hoping The Whole Enchilada can hold on to its little bit of ground. The rest of the block it’s on has been sold to build an IPIC (pronounced eye-pic) movie theater. The Fort Lauderdale IPIC location will be just about midway between the existing North Miami and Boca Raton locations. The new development could be a boom for the little Mexican joint.

New Directions Chamber Winds presents its summer concert, “Classical Treasures,” on Saturday, July 13 at 4 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church, 1955 E. Oakland Park Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale. The ensemble, which includes LGBT and both professional and amateur musicians, performs semiannual concerts in Wilton Manors and Oakland Park. “We are particularly eclectic in our programming,” conductor Juan Mansilla told SFGN last winter. “We seek out works that are very unique and particular, yet accessible and relatable to the audience. And then, with each of our programs, we try to create a compelling narrative, so it’s not just a string of random musical pieces.” For this performance, Mansilla has selected works by Edvard Grieg, Maurice Ravel and Antonin Dvorak. Amanda Moskowitz will be the featured soloist in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Horn Quintet in E-flat, transcribed for wind instruments.
A reception will follow the concert. The concert is free, but a $20 donation is requested at the door. For more information, go to Evensi.us. Symphony of the Americas Summerfest Symphony of the Americas presents its annual Summerfest concert series, July 12 – Aug. 9 at venues in Broward and Palm Beach Counties. Summerfest traditionally features musicians and soloists from acclaimed orchestras throughout Europe, including Orchestra Sinfonica di Roma, Opera Orchestra of Bulgaria, Mission Symphony Orchestra of Switzerland and Orchestre de la Suisse Romande performing several styles of
classical and popular music for strings, all joined in a cultural exchange by principal musicians from the Symphony of the Americas. Maestro James Brooks-Bruzzese has selected a program of works by Hubert Parry, Antonio Vivaldi, Ludwig von Beethoven, Antonin Dvorak and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The Summerfest orchestra will also premiere a commissioned composition by Italian composer-in-residence Lorenzo Turchi-Floris.
On Friday, July 19 at 7:30 p.m., the Broward Center will host the Summerfest orchestra in the Amaturo Theater. Tickets start at $20. For a full festival schedule and ticket information, go to SymphonyOfTheAmericas.org. Miami Music Festival Richard Wagner’s intense German operas are anything but “light classics,” but his soaring melodies and fancifu stories provide a welcome distraction. On Friday, July 19 at 7:30 p.m., Miami Music Festival’s Wagner Institute makes its debut in the Arsht Center’s Ziff Ballet Opera House with a full performance of Wagner’s “The Flying Dutchman.” Inspired by a troubled sea voyage, “The Flying Dutchman” is the first of Wagner’s “romantic operas.” Set off the shores of Norway, Captain Daland and his crew come across a ghost ship that is captained by the Dutchman — condemned for all eternity for blasphemy. If the Dutchman can find a faithful wife, he will be saved. Daland’s daughter Senta agrees to the arrangement, but a past suitor threatens the Dutchman’s salvation.
Tickets start at $29 at ArshtCenter.org. Miami Music Festival also includes dozens of other musical events across the city, many free. For a complete schedule and ticket information, go to MiamiMusicFestival.com.
