PAC, a Super PAC that represents the interests of lesbians, jumped into the race to replace retiring Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen in Florida’s 27th congressional district by endorsing frontrunner, Donna Shalala. Shalala, former Health and Human Services Secretary under former President Bill Clinton is running against openly gay David Richardson, a representative in the Florida House, for the Democratic nomination. Democrats believe the 27th district is one of their best opportunities to pick up a seat in the House. The district is 71 percent Hispanic and went for Hillary Clinton 59 percent to 39 percent in 2016. Meanwhile Richardson recently picked up the support of the Democratic Progressive Caucus of Florida. “David Richardson has been a relentless champion for working families in the Florida Legislature, and we are confident that he will continue to put their interests first when he’s elected to Congress,” DPCF President Susan Smith told Florida Politics. According to the Miami Herald Richardson has targeted Shalala attacking See our news in video Online now!

her liberal bona fides and labeling her as a “double-dealing corporate Democrat.” “What I’m doing is exposing the truth about her record,” Richardson told the Herald. “She has a duty to respond, not to me, but to the voters.” But as the Herald notes Shalala is a cofounder of the women’s political action committee, Emily’s List as well as a “Clintonite.” “This election isn’t just about electing a Democrat, it’s about electing the right Democrat,” Richardson told the Herald. “When voters see the truth they’ll understand there’s a very clear difference between me and Donna Shalala.” Not everyone believes Richardson’s aggressiveness and negativity will work though. “It’s always difficult to attack a woman running for office. Especially these days,” Katy Sorenson, a former Miami-Dade county commissioner, told the Herald. Sorenson backed Richardson before Shalala got into the race. “It’s not the advice I would have given David.” M E M B E R Richardson made history in 2012 when he became the first openly gay person MEMBER

elected to the state legislature. Meanwhile Shalala was once attacked for being a closeted lesbian, which she denied. In 1992 when Bill Clinton appointed her as HHS Secretary, a radical LGBT group, Queer Nation, attempted to out her. According to the Associated Press at the time: “Michael Petrellis, co-founder of Queer Nation, said his only evidence that Shalala is a lesbian is that several other homosexuals have made the claim. He said he wants her to say she is a lesbian to show people that a lesbian can hold such a prestigious position.” The Clinton-Gore transition team vigorously defended Shalala telling the AP the accusations were “not true and it’s irrelevant.” “Donna Shalala was chosen for her position because she is a woman of competence, experience and vision who offers the country a great deal through her service,” a Clinton spokesperson told the AP in 1992. The other candidates in the Democratic primary include Matt Haggman, Michal Hepburn, and Kristen Rosen Gonzalez. The primary takes place August 28.

Volvo Redesigns London ‘Family Parking’ Signs with LGBT Families Brittany Ferrendi

S

wedish car company Volvo and ad agency Grey London unveiled new family parking spot designs to coincide with London Pride this past weekend. The new family parking signs show nontraditional families, including two women with a baby in a stroller, a single man with two children, and an elderly person with a baby. Traditionally, the UK signs showed a heterosexual couple with a baby. “According to the Office of National Statistics, 65% of U.K. families are nontraditional,” Grey London Creative Director Joseph Ernst said in a press release. “But the family iconography we see every day still doesn’t reflect this. To launch Volvo’s ultimate family car, the new V60, we wanted to represent families of all kinds. The Volvo Family Icons are

a celebration of the broad spectrum of diverse families living in the UK today.” Volvo also aired a new commercial July 9 titled “The New Family Model” which interviewed same-sex couples. “We’re a really family-centric car brand,” said Volvo’s U.K. representative Georgina Williams via commercial. “Families have evolved into all different shapes and sizes, and we’re evolving with that with this latest iteration of the V60.”

Activists Sneak Pride into Russia Brittany Ferrendi

ix activists made Moscow a little gayer using some creativity. The 2013 propaganda ban stopped distribution of LGBT material to minors. The activists from Spain, The Netherlands, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina and Colombia joined together using soccer shirts, standing side-by-side in the color of the pride flag to protest Russia’s “homosexual propaganda” ban. “Unfortunately, 40 years later, there are still countries in which homosexuality is persecuted, sometimes even by jail sentences, and in which the rainbow flag is forbidden. Russia is one of these countries,” the activists said through their “The Hidden Flag” project page. “Because of this, we have taken advantage of the fact the country is hosting the World Cup at the same time as Pride Month, to denounce their behaviour and take the rainbow flag to the streets of Russia.” The group took multiple photos throughout the city of Moscow — even posed beside Russian police.

Poll: Around 10 Percent of Britain’s Generation Z Identify as Bisexual

Lupe Valdez could be the first out lesbian to be governor of a U.S. state if she wins in Texas. The lesbian is running in a November race against Republican incumbent Greg Abbott, according to the Advocate. Valdez had won both the primary and the runoff election to become the Democratic candidate. “Everybody’s telling me this is an uphill

battle,” said Valdez. “My response to that is, when has it not been an uphill battle for me? I’m getting darn good at uphill battles.” Valdez previously served as the sheriff of Dallas County for three consecutive terms starting in 2004. Her campaign includes a pro-public education, proenvironment and pro-immigrant agenda.

A new poll found that 16-to-24-yearolds are the most likely generation to identify as bisexual. Ipsos Mori found that Generation Z was twice as likely as Millenials to identify as bisexual, according to the Daily Mail. Women were also more likely to be bisexual than men. “In particular, this generation of young [adults] has grown up at a time when

gender as a simple binary and fixed identity has been questioned much more widely,” Ipsos Mori researcher Hannah Shrimpton said. “This is new, and will affect wider views of gender, sexuality and much broader aspects of identity.” The polling company asked over 2,250 British adults aged 15 to 75 on their thoughts about LGBT issues.

Being Transgender Considered Mental Disorder by Israeli Insurance Company

Via Facebook

An insurance company in Israel denied a mastectomy refund for a transgender man, claiming that gender dysphoria was a mental disorder. Ayalon Insurance said to the unidentified man that they do not cover treatments for “mental disorders or psychological conditions,” according to Haaretz. The man is appealing the company’s choice as discriminatory through the Human Rights

Clinic at Tel Aviv University. “My classification as transgender has nothing to do with mental disorder,” the man said to Haaretz. “This is an unfair and wrong generalization.” The World Health Organization removed gender dysphoria as a mental illness. Sex change surgeries and procedures are covered by subsidized medical services in Israel.

“Everyone involved has done a great job to organize the march in the best way possible.” Attendees were able to appreciate different forms of expression throughout the march, from the participants’ clothes to different messages on posters and slogans. “The definitive goal is to make ourselves visible as a community within Salvadoran society, demand that it guarantees our human rights through a normative framework that ensures them,” Tatiana Molina, a trans activist who is Miss Trans El Salvador, told the Blade. “We sent the message that we exist, we vote and we pay taxes just like the cisgender-heterosexual community.” Members of the capital’s LGBTI community were not the only ones who attended El Salvador Pride. “We have participated in the Pride march as a collective for several years and we do it with the intention of reminding ourselves that we are unique in the eastern part of the country where we work on LGBTI human rights issues, and that is why we invite our peers to join this effort

in defense of human rights,” said Ever Pacheco, director of Colectivo Estrellas del Golfo in La Unión, as he talked about his experience taking part in this event. “The march is not to celebrate colors. If anything, it recognizes organizations with a very small budget that have made big changes in such a short amount of time.” The LGBTI Pride celebrations in El Salvador this year have set, without a doubt, a precedent in the LGBTI community and left everyone who fights for visibility and respect for human rights feeling satisfied. “This march, with this journey, with this united and solid convocation with one voice from the federation brought 12,000 people — free, happy, proud — to a space they have been told does not belong to them,” said Andrea Ayala, executive director of Espacio de Mujeres Lesbianas Salvadoreñas por la Diversidad (ESMULES). “We all went down a street for rich people with pride and love.” This story is courtesy of the National LGBTQ Media Association.

Mexico’s President-Elect Cites LGBT Community in Victory Speech Andrés Manuel López Obrador via Facebook

Grace Perry Washington Blade

A

ndrés Manuel López Obrador on Sunday became Mexico’s first leftist president in decades, winning in a landslide victory with more than 50 percent of the

vote. López Obrador — commonly known by his initials AMLO — has a long history in politics. He was Mexico City’s mayor from 2000 to 2005, and he ran (and lost) in the two previous presidential elections. A member of the Democratic Revolution Party (PRD), López Obrador ran on an anti-corruption platform and a narrative of social change centered around eradicating poverty. His win represents a clear rejection of the status quo and political establishment and a desire for widespread change. Gaby Soberanis, president of Diversidad Guerrero in Acapulco, said she hopes the changes brought about by his election and presidency are “for good,” and that he’s able to combat the country’s systemic “violence” and “insecurity” through “alliances, programs and public policies in favor of the collective.” Current President Enrique Peña Nieto is one of the country’s most unpopular leaders in decades, with an administration characterized by scandal and inadequacy in combating crime and violence. According to the Mexican Interior Ministry, nearly 30,000 people were killed last year in the country, making it the worst year on record for homicides. Peña Nieto was a member of the centrist Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), which has ruled Mexico for most of the last century. José Antonio Meade, the PRI candidate in this year’s election, finished in third place behind López Obrador and Ricardo Anaya, a center-right politician. López Obrador has already begun breaking from previous presidents; in his Sunday victory speech, he said, “the state will represent all Mexicans…from all points of view and sexual preferences.” According to Karolyna Pollorena, an LGBT activist in Mexicali, López Obrador is the first president-elect in the country’s history to specifically mention the LGBTI community in his victory speech. She also said López Obrador will have a more diverse cabinet than previous administrations and more progressive representatives across various government sectors.

“With it [the administration] and the help of the Mexican LGBTTTI+ Coalition, we hope that this new government can help legalize marriage equality in the states where it’s lacking in Mexico.” - Karolyna Pollorena LGBT activist in Mexicali

“With it [the administration] and the help of the Mexican LGBTTTI+ Coalition, we hope that this new government can help legalize marriage equality in the states where it’s lacking in Mexico and also move forward on issues of legislation that have (stalled) in past governments,” Pollorena said. Despite his remarks in his victory speech, López Obrador did not campaign explicitly as an advocate for LGBT rights or marriage equality, and he dodged questions on the campaign trail regarding such issues. His electoral coalition also includes the Social Encounter Party (PES), which was founded by evangelical Christians and has opposed previous efforts to federally legalize same-sex marriage. Given these factors, Alex Ali Méndez Díaz — a lawyer spearheading same-sex marriage efforts in Mexico — said

LGBTI advocacy will remain principally centered in civil society. “It is up to civil society to continue working to make our voices heard and to defend ourselves against any attempt at invisibilization and/or regression,” Méndez Díaz said. Pollorena echoed Méndez Díaz’s belief that Mexican citizens are the key to progress and should be engaged and active under the new administration, saying “it is now important to invite citizens to get involved and demand that campaign promises be fulfilled when the new administration begins.”

In 2015, just over 39,000 people in the U.S. were diagnosed with HIV infection, a significant drop in new infections over the preceding decade. This decline is due to the success of public health programs that have promoted testing and early treatment of those who are newly diagnosed, but may also be due to the rollout of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). PrEP is a daily pill (brand name Truvada) approved by the FDA in 2012, containing two medicines (tenofovir DF and emtricitabine), that greatly reduces the risk of HIV infection. Despite the increased risk of HIV among transgender women, TGNB people are still not designated as a priority population for PrEP by the CDC, which prioritizes sexually active MSM, heterosexuals at substantial risk for HIV, and injection drug users. Attorneys Who Argued Gay Rights Cases Reflect on Kennedy Legacy Chris Johnson Washington Blade

U

.S. Associate Justice Anthony Kennedy is stepping down from the U.S. Supreme Court after writing four milestone cases in favor of gay rights over the course of his 30 years on the bench. The Washington Blade contacted the attorneys who argued each of those cases — Romer v. Evans in 1996, Lawrence v. Texas in 2003, U.S. v. Windsor in 2013 and Obergefell v. Hodges in 2015 — for their reflections on those decisions and LGBT rights in the aftermath of Kennedy’s retirement.

Here are their responses:

gay rights. It’s not surprising, given no precedent, that Justice Kennedy’s opinion did not follow customary equal protection analysis. Romer became the starting point for the gay rights cases that followed. Now that Kennedy has announced his retirement, to what extent is his legacy on LGBT rights in danger? Dubofsky: I’d be surprised if Romer and its progeny are overturned. (Chief Justice Roberts, then an attorney in private practice, helped me prepare for the argument). Protection for religious expression, however, may allow those who provide services for gay weddings to discriminate.

Hardwick, which upheld sodomy laws in 1986 and which undercut almost any constitutional argument that could be made in favor of LGBT civil rights under the Constitution. Finally, the way Justice Kennedy wrote the Lawrence opinion made it a springboard toward legal recognition of same-sex relationships. He made clear that our relationships have the same value and play the same role as different-sex relationships. He also established firmly that the government has no right to make moral judgments condemning individual choices about what kind of relationship or family to form. In our free society, those are choices individuals get to make. As Justice Scalia noted in his dissent in Lawrence, those two moves made it difficult to oppose claims to marriage equality. Our opponents struggled for the next 12 years to explain why same-sex couples could be excluded from marriage, once they could no longer offer up the kind of moral arguments that Lawrence forbade. Now that Kennedy has announced his

retirement, to what extent is his legacy on LGBT rights in danger? Smith: I would anticipate that the new Court will be supportive of claims like that made in Masterpiece Cakeshop for individual private exemptions from state or federal laws banning anti-gay discrimination. I would be surprised, however, if the Court were to overrule Obergefell and authorize states to refuse to marry more same-sex couples. Marriage equality is too ingrained in our national understanding of fairness and justice. But we should be watchful nonetheless. United States v. Windsor, Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act, which barred federal recognition of same-sex marriage, is unconstitutional Kennedy: “DOMA instructs all federal officials, and indeed all persons with whom same-sex couples interact, including their own children, that their marriage is less worthy than the marriages of others. The federal statute is invalid, for no legitimate purpose overcomes the purpose and effect to disparage and to injure those whom the State, by its marriage laws, sought to protect in personhood and dignity.” Attorney: Roberta Kaplan, who argued the case on behalf of New York widow Edith

NEWS national Windsor, now founding partner at Kaplan & Company LLP. Editor’s Note: The Blade submitted questions to Kaplan on the significance of the Windsor decision in the aftermath of Kennedy’s retirement, but she declined to provide responses before deadline. Obergefell v. Hodges, state laws barring same-sex couples from obtaining marriage licenses and prohibiting recognition of those marriages are unconstitutional Kennedy: “No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice, and family. In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than once they were. Study: Children of LGBT Parents Have Fewer Psych Problems Than Opposite-Sex Counterparts Brittany Ferrendi

A

recently published Italian study found that children of same-sex couples fared better psychologically compared to opposite-sex couples. “Children with same-sex parents fare well both in terms of psychological adjustment and prosocial behavior,” the study published to the Journal of Developmental & Behavioral Pediatrics reported. The study looked at 125 lesbian women who had children through donor sperm, 70 gay men who had a child through a surrogate and 195 opposite-sex couples. “Contrary to our expectations that no differences would be found in the parental dimensions between the family types, gay fathers generally reported themselves as more competent and satisfied in their couple relationship and living in the most cohesive and flexible family environment,” researchers of the study said. “Overall, it would seem that they tend to have associated better outcomes and actually

are not the ones who need additional support in terms of improving children’s outcomes; yet, they are wrongly identified as possibly being worse at parenting.” Heterosexual couples reported more difficulties than same-sex couples — yet all types of couples still fell within normal ranges. The study provided parents with a questionnaire about their ability to parent their children as well as how easy it was for them to adjust to parenthood. The study also analyzed the couples’ children psychologically and socially.

19-year-old took revenge on the famous Stonewall Inn after getting kicked out Saturday. William Gomez was hanging out with coworkers at the bar but was removed by staff. He returned at 4:25 a.m. with a baseball bat and caused nearly $7,000 worth of damage between the smashed windows and broken neon sign, according to NY Daily News. Police arrested Gomez and charged him with criminal mischief and reckless endangerment, but he was freed Saturday evening after his arraignment. He will not face hate crime charges. According to Gomez’s mother, her son told her a bouncer punched him before he was removed from the bar. “He said that a bodyguard was messing with one of his co-workers and he told him to stop,” she told NY Daily News. “He then

In 2017 he was charged with assault, in 2015 he was accused of criminal impersonation, and in 2014 he was arrested for robbery. “He’s a quiet boy,” his mother said. “He doesn’t get into trouble.” The Stonewall Inn was repaired right on time to open 2 p.m. Saturday.

So I think, in terms of judicial activism, that is something that all judges have to guard against. That is something that the Supreme Court has to guard against. And throughout our history, we have seen that some of the worst moments in the Supreme Court history have been moments of judicial activism where courts have imposed their

own policy preferences.” Rachel B. Tiven, Chief Executive Officer of Lambda Legal, said LGBT people “have good reason to fear that Judge Kavanaugh will abuse his power on the Court to protect the wealthy and the powerful while depriving LGBT Americans of our dignity, demeaning our community, and diminishing our status as equal citizens.” Many political observers are speculating that Trump was drawn to Kavanaugh in no small part because he thinks Kavanaugh would protect him when certain issues come before the Supreme Court. Kavanaugh has written, for instance, that he does not believe a U.S. president can be criminally indicted or subjected to a civil lawsuit while in office. U.S. Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ), who is on the Senate Judiciary Committee, told the Rachel Maddow Show last night that the Kavanaugh nomination is a “get out of jail free card.” 7.11.2018 •

Kava Business Faces Backlash After

Transphobic Social Media Posts Damon Scott

L

ike Donald Trump, maybe the owners of this business think all publicity is good publicity? It’s unclear yet if publicity was the motivation for a slew of posts this week on social media by Kavasutra Kava Bar, which has multiple locations including Lake Worth, Delray and Fort Lauderdale. The posts have largely been deemed sexist and transphobic and have created an avalanche of ongoing negative publicity. The business offers a variety of kava (tea) drinks. They made an initial post advertising a Monday night event that was described as a “genetic female slam.” “Tonight at 1:00 there will be a genetic female slam. If you are a chick per your DNA, well m’lady, it’s slam time,” the post, since deleted, read. A “slam” appears to be a type of kava drink served like a shot. A later Kavasutra post elaborated: “#slams tonight for chicks only. Chicks means born

with a vagina. You must have ovaries,” read part of the post. Summer Balester, of Davie, was outraged by the posts and decided to spread the word. Balester took screen shots of the postings and placed them on her Facebook page Monday. (Kavasutra had deleted some of its original postings and replies.) By Tuesday afternoon, Balester’s post had been shared across Facebook more than 2,000 times and commented on at least as much.

Photos via Instagram, Facebook

Comments included: “Ovaries make a woman? Gosh, I wish someone had told me that before I had a life saving hysterectomy! I mean, my endometriosis and ovarian cysts would have just kept getting worse. But at least I’d still be a woman!” After one commenter asked (as a reply to Kavasutra’s post) why a business would be concerned with someone’s genitals in the first place, calling it “100% unprofessional and gross,” Kavasutra had yet another response. “The point of ladies night is to get ladies in the door so the men can bang them. If there’s no vagina then they don’t qualify because they don’t benefit the business and the plan,” the post said. Not surprisingly, more outrage followed on social media and across the internet after that post. South Florida media outlets, The controversy is also ironic since their Lake Worth location participated in the Lake Worth PrideFest parade this year.

including the Sun Sentinel, picked up the story. Detractors began to write negative business reviews on Yelp and Facebook and there is now a thread on Reddit. One negative review on Facebook was posted by Eric Carbone of Fort Lauderdale. “Garbage business run by garbage people. Transphobes aren’t welcome in South Florida. Get out of our community,” the post read. Attempts to contact Kavasutra ownership or management at its Las Olas, Lakewood and Delray locations Tuesday were unsuccessful. The controversy is also ironic since their Lake Worth location participated in the Lake Worth PrideFest parade this year, even going so far as to promote the event on Instagram and Facebook. The chain also has locations in New York City and Denver. The business also made news recently after it posted “God Hates Beer” signs near the Saltwater Brewery in Delray Beach. The Miami New Times picked up that story.

I received the enclosed email, honestly, less than 15 minutes ago, and it is going to piss off my graphic designer, who’s leaving for France tomorrow, to have to lay this out at the last minute. I am sorry, but this is too important. If I got this, so might have you. And you might fall for it. Don’t. Jesse’s Journal

Aretha Franklin: The Queen of Soul Jesse Monteagudo

G

ay men have long been attracted to strong female figures, especially those in the entertainment field. From Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand to Lady Gaga and Kesha, divas have enjoyed huge gay followings; and gay drag queens continue to honor them by impersonating them. One artist who is curiously missing from most gay diva lists is Aretha Franklin, the Queen of Soul. Franklin burst upon the music scene in 1967, just as 14-year-old me began my record collection. Coming from six so-so years with Columbia Records, Aretha started out under the guidance of Atlantic Records producer Jerry Wexler. From 1967 to 1969 Franklin could do no wrong, turning out hit songs like “Respect,” “Chain of Fools,” “A Natural Woman” and “Think.” To a queer boy then reaching puberty and realizing his own difference, Aretha Franklin struck a chord with her songs of power and defiance. Along with James Brown, Franklin was the musical personification of the civil rights movement. Aretha also prefigured feminism with her nononsense approach to female-male relationships. Aretha’s musical foremothers, Billie Holiday and Dinah Washington, had man problems and died young. Though Franklin had her own trouble man - namely her no-good first husband, Ted White - she got rid of the lout just as her music was earning her universal R-E-S-P-E-C-T. In 1967 Aretha took “Respect” from Otis Redding, who wrote it as his take on marital problems, and turned it into a universal declaration of pride: for African-Americans, for women, for everyone - even for a 14-year old Cuban

gayboy in Miami. Unlike Tina Turner, whose slim build and curvy legs made her a favorite among straight boys, Aretha Franklin was never a sex symbol. On the other hand, to us gays Aretha’s zaftig figure was never an issue; it only made her more human and more appealing. Luther Vandross, who had his own weight problems, grew up admiring Queen Re, and as a result became a talented singer and composer in his own right. Franklin is no fashion plate, and female impersonators do not win pageants by trying to look like her. This did not prevent a popular seventies South Florida drag act from becoming famous as “Mr. Aretha,” a tribute from one queen to another. In 1969 Franklin’s music took a downturn, and hostile critics declared that her career over. But she recovered in time to enjoy a musical renaissance with songs like “Call Me,” “Don’t Play that Song,” “Spanish Harlem” and “Rock Steady.” Many of her hits were recorded in Miami, where Wexler retired to in 1969. These were the years when I went to college, became a U.S. citizen, and came out. Here again, Aretha Franklin provided the soundtrack of my life. Aretha and I parted company during the disco era. It was not a good time for the Queen of Soul, who made a series of wretched albums for a now-uncaring Atlantic. I only began to buy Aretha records again after 1980, the year that she signed a contract with Clive Davis’s Arista Records. For Arista, Franklin got back on track, recording hits like “Jump To It,” “Get It Right” and “Freeway of Love” and singing duets with Elton John, George

Michael and Luther Vandross: boys who, like this much-less musically talented writer, grew up listening to the Queen. Though Franklin reached her peak in the sixties, she continues to be a force in American music. She has survived weight issues, health issues, fashion disasters, her fear of flying and her dislike for other divas.

In 1987 she became the first woman to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Time magazine named her one of the 100 most influential people of the 20th century.. And she continues to provide pleasure and inspiration to millions of fans, myself included. Five decades after “Respect,” she remains the undisputed Queen of Soul.

column letters to the editor The following responses remain unedited.

Readers Respond to “Double Standards — The Pride Center should not be given preferential treatment” Dear Sal, You asked: “How is it then that the Pride Center, with outstanding code issues and an illegal commercial business operating on their campus, can continue moving ahead with their planned partnership with Carrfour and the planned lowincome, supportive housing complex for their campus?” Short answer: You don’t understand Florida Statutes, Wilton Manors Code, or really anything about these issues. But you alas have lots of “opinions” about it. First, the gym is not an illegal business in this zoning district (TOC-E). It is a permitted business in the zoning code for Wilton Manors. “P” means permitted by right. That means they have a legal right to place the business in this location. The Plat Restriction under Broward County Code relates to them paying an impact fee for transportation. The Plat Restriction has nothing to do with whether or not a business is permitted on the property or not. It is an impact fee not a license to do business. It is my understanding that this application is in process and will be approved. Once this issue is resolved, they will then pay their Business Tax Receipt (BTR). A BTR is exactly what it sounds like a BUSINESS TAX. It is not a license as you say under Florida law. Bottom line: The business is legally permitted on this property. They do not need a “license” to operate. It is already legally permitted as outlined in the Wilton Manors code. On the issue of the noise, the City did not follow its own code when measuring the sound when responding to the noise complaint. You can’t just go around citing people when someone thinks something is loud. The City’s code has a method for measuring the sound in decibels by using sound measuring devices. The Code officer did not use the devices per the code requirements and therefore did not follow the proper procedures. In fact, the one being treated unfairly is the Pride Center. Your exaggerations in this Op-Ed and others in the past are quite disturbing. The vitriol you have

against the Pride Center’s mission to help the LGBT community is telling. You use words such as “shyster,” which verges on anti-Semitism, and other loaded language like “low income,” “illegal,” and “carpet bagger.” Your opinions are divisive, unwelcoming, and will not move Wilton Manors forward as an inclusive, welcoming community to all members of the LGBT community.

– Justin

People who live next to trains tracks complaining of loud music? Seriously? This article completely ignores all the good work the Pride Center does. It ignores the good work the low-income housing at the Pride Center would bring. The legitimate Business at the Pride Center should get a license... I should add the good work that business does for its patrons. Nothing but healing and personal growth happens at the Pride Center. For SFGN to constantly beat up the people who organize this great work should be shamed of themselves. All SFGN wants is a salacious headline. Shame on SFGN!

"The most glaring, consistent and troubling failure is selective enforcement of our code."

–Michael

In my 13 years of living in the very center of this town, Code Enforcement has always been the most frustrating, opaque, and in the end, I believe, corrupt part of a city government that otherwise functions fairly well. The most glaring, consistent and troubling failure is selective enforcement of our code. Along the Drive on any given night after 11 p.m. will prove this: to nearly the last one- every business is breaking code. Try finding a Code Enforcement Officer (not WMPD) at that hour. And should you, thru some good grace, karma, or bit of luck (OTHER THAN MONEY/ACCESS TO ATTORNEYS) the word you will hear on the street, is this: no one wants to harm these businesses. Money and power are always seated at the table, no matter where or when. But I know of no place where it is more readily and brazenly apparent.

Via Facebook.

Readers React to “Should City Fund the Pride Center’s Affordable Housing Project?” As described by Robert Boo of the Pride Center to CANA members last year, the proposed low-income housing project will pay an upfront fee of around $1 million to the Pride Center. Ongoing fees would also be paid to the Pride Center in the future. Now we learn that Broward County is being asked to contribute $900,000 to the project. And Wilton Manors is being asked to donate $200,000. It is hard to characterize these contributions as investments in affordable housing when the bulk of the money will flow into the treasury of the Pride Center. A few questions: Who gets the other $100,000? Carrfour? Why isn’t the Pride Center offering to reduce its upfront development fee in an amount equal to the $200,000 it is asking the city to contribute? – Brent W. White

It still has the playground; it has a gym; and now it wants to create affordable housing for senior citizens. Can any one organization really have this breadth in the services that it provides? And does Wilton Manors really have so few socialservice agencies that one agency has to do so many things? ….. I just don’t think that it’s possible to do so many things and to do them all well. – Chris Gonza

This City has no established program with procedures for utilization of this housing fund. Broward House, with the client in-take office in Wilton Manors, could certainly utilize these funds for their housing services. If Wilton Manors wants to grant $200,00, almost 2/3 of their affordable housing fund, they should request “bids.” City must then exercise due diligence and provide professional review of each applicant for legal and financial issues. Commissioners may then evaluate and make a legal binding decision. “Shovel Ready” programs should have some sort of priority. To simple meet, discuss, and grant funds to the Pride Center right now is irresponsible. – Raymond Carrier

Three-bedroom apartments as affordable senior housing? If anything is built, shouldn’t it all be studio apartments, and as many as possible to help as many seniors as possible? – Lenny Cohen

Goodbye Tab Hunter (1931-2018)

David-Elijah Nahmod

Tab Hunter via Facebook

A

rthur Andrew Kelm, better known as Tab Hunter, has died, 86. Hunter became an iconic heartthrob in 1950s Hollywood and also enjoyed a successful career as a recording artist. Throughout his career Hunter carried a secret. He was a gay man at a time when coming out meant career suicide. He went out on studio manufactured dates with Natalie Wood, causing Hollywood insiders to quip “Natalie would, Tab wouldn’t.” Hunter came out in 2005 with the publication of his autobiography “Tab Hunter Confidential: The Making Of A Movie Star.” In interviews he stated that he wrote the well-received book after he heard that someone else was planning to write a book about him. He said that he didn’t want his story to be told by “some shmuck who doesn’t even know me.” “Tab Hunter Confidential” was turned into an acclaimed documentary in 2015. Hunter rose to prominence with his starring role in the World War II drama “Battle Cry” (1955). “Battle Cry” was one of the year’s most successful films, and Hunter, a contract player at Warner Brothers, went on to star in many more hit films, including the big screen version of the hit Broadway musical “Damn Yankees” (1958). He also co-starred with superstar Wood in a pair of films, “The Burning Hills”

and “The Girl He Left Behind” (both 1956). Hunter’s music career was as successful as his film career. In 1957 he enjoyed a number one hit with the rock and roll song “Young Love,” which sold over a million copies and was certified gold. In 1961, after failing to secure the role of Tony in the classic musical “West Side Story,” Hunter agreed to star in a weekly television series. “The Tab Hunter Show” was only a moderate success and was cancelled after one season. Throughout his career Hunter appeared in dozens of films, and even appeared on Broadway opposite theater legend Tallulah Bankhead in openly gay writer Tennessee Williams’ “The Milk Train Doesn’t Stop Here Anymore.” He remained closeted about his sexuality throughout most of his life. In 1981 Hunter agreed to appear with the outrageous drag queen Divine in gay director John Waters’ “Polyester.” Though many consider this his coming out film, Hunter continued to refuse to discuss his private life. He was reteamed with Divine in the western spoof “Lust In The Dust” (1984). On June 8 Hunter died of a blood clot which caused a heart attack. At the time of his death he had been with his partner Allan Glaser for over thirty years.

JULY 14 / 6-10pm Let loose as artists create a wild underground art extravaganza! “The hottest ticket of the summer”

TICKETS ON SALE: ARTSERVE.ORG 954-462-8190 / 1350 E. Sunrise Blvd. / Fort Lauderdale / 33304

ince 1984, the creative team at Cirque du Soleil has created more than 40 original productions. The acrobats and clowns of the Montreal-based troupe have performed in tents and arenas around the globe, on Broadway and the Las Vegas strip. The whimsical shows have drawn inspiration from ancient myths and modern fantasy and incorporated otherworldly creatures and extreme sports. The newest production, “Crystal,” opening at the BB&T Center in Sunrise on July 18, is another first, introducing the company’s daring acrobatic and aerial stunts with the beauty and athletic thrills of figure skating. One of the many performers to hit the ice is Canadian figure skater Shawn Sawyer. The 33-year-old began skating as a child and fulfilled his dream to represent his country at the 2006 Torino Olympics, finishing in the top 12. He retired from competitive skating and traveled the world with ice shows, but could never have imagined the opportunity to perform with Cirque du Soliel. He elaborated, “I knew I would be a part of skating shows, for sure, but never in a million years could I imagine Cirque du Soleil would approach the element of ice while I was still performing,” Sawyer said in a telephone interview during quick a break in his grueling training schedule. “Now I’m learning different aspects of the acrobatic world and even acting. I’m learning a lot from this journey. I’m becoming more than a figure skater—an all-around athlete and an all-around artist. I’m learning every single day…new tricks, how to take care of my body

better, learning to share such a big stage with other performers.” Sawyer credits his success in this new “arena” to the work ethic and discipline required of competitive skaters. Even when on the road, he must maintain his skills on the ice and off. He already had a reputation as a bit of a daredevil, attempting jumps and flips that were never a part of the compulsory elements. Those abilities—along with his nature love of performing—gave him the edge when Cirque du Soleil directors began casting the show. “Crystal,” the lead character in the production, embarks on an exhilarating tale of self-discovery as she dives into a world of her own imagination. She soars through this surreal world at high speed to become what she was always destined: confident, liberated, and empowered. Sawyer portrays one of the many characters she encounters and helps to reach her elusive destination. “I can relate to that, it’s something I’ve grown up doing, finding my place in life, in society, in relationships. I like that role for myself,” Sawyer said. Sawyer, who is openly gay, is also quick to dispel the perceptions of competitive figure skating as being homophobic, saying the sport has become “much more open about talking about it, which is a good thing. It’s a real thing, it’s reality. For Olympic athletes, at that moment it doesn’t always matter. They’re just proud to be representing their countries (and) themselves. As an athlete is performing, their goal is just to do their best.”

Cirque du Soleil presents “Crystal” at the BB&T Center in Sunrise, Wednesday, July 18 through Sunday, July 29. Tickets start at $43 at CirqueDuSoleil.com/Crystal.

Disco Superstar Reflects on Career, Music

the thrill of it all north american tour plus special guest just announced

J.W. Arnold

I

t’s been nearly 40 decades since K.C. and the Sunshine Band first began topping the charts with disco hits like “Get Down Tonight,” “Shake Your Booty,” “Boogie Shoes” and “I’m Your Boogie Man.” But did you know that band founder front man Harry Wayne Casey (K.C.) got his start in nearby Hialeah, Florida and has never lived further than 10 miles from his birthplace? In 1973, the Vietnam War was still raging on and young people staged protests across the country. President Richard Nixon was under investigation after the infamous Watergate burglary. Inflation and unemployment were on the rise. People were looking for a distraction and found one in the “dance revolution” started by K.C. “I grew up in a very musical family. My cousins all sang or played instruments. My mother and her sisters used to do local radio commercials. I was kind of well-rounded. Growing up in a gospel church, there was always music in the church. When I was 13 or 14, my sister wanted a piano and I started taking a few lessons. After a while, my teacher told me I knew more than she did. It was her kind way of telling me she didn’t want to teach me anymore,” Casey recalled with a chuckle. Casey was determined to get into the music business. He worked at a local record store, opened boxes at Tone Record Distributors and hung around a local recording studio just hoping to get his big break and record a song. That break eventually came and the rest is history: four Number One records in a row, Grammy awards, People’s Choice awards

and American Music awards and featured performances at every major sporting event in the world, including the Super Bowl, World Series, NBA championships, collegiate bowl games, NASCAR championships, World Cup, Indianapolis 500 and the Kentucky Derby. Not to mention, his songs are a staple for D.J.s at nearly every wedding, confirmation and bar mitzvah party in the world. His favorite song? “That’s a hard question, they all mean something different to me,” he answered. “I’ve always had lots of favorites. Maybe ‘Get Down Tonight,’ my first number one record.” Along the way, he’s been accompanied by the Sunshine Band, a group of pickup musicians he assembled for that first recording session. Musicians have come and gone over the years, but Casey looks forward to every performance singing the upbeat songs that made K.C. and his band a household name. Casey will perform those classics along with the newer songs he’s been working on at the new Hard Rock Events Center at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood on Friday, July 20. He recognizes that today’s stars face different challenges, especially in the era of YouTube: “I’m not sure how it all really works. Sometimes I think there were more opportunities to get your music on the radio back then, but (YouTube) has given people a lot of opportunities and an outlet to express their creativity,” he said. “I’ve been very fortunate, very blessed.”

K.C. and the Sunshine Band perform live at the Hard Rock Events Center at the Hard Rock Hotel and casino in Hollywood on Friday, July 20 at 8 p.m. Tickets start at $35 at MyHRL.com.

“Think you can slow me down, HIV? Not in this lifetime.” Yuri - Miami, FL Living with HIV.

HIV

TREATMENT

WORKS

I refuse to let HIV get in the way of my busy schedule. I even have a cell phone app that reminds me to take my HIV meds. When I’m not working, I keep busy with boot camp, swimming, weight lifting, meditation, traveling and — oh yeah — karaoke. I know that the more control I have over my HIV, the less power I give to the virus. I take control by taking my HIV medication every day.

Get in care. Stay in care. Live well. cdc.gov/HIVTreatmentWorks
