hico Cromartie is running for the City Council in St. Pete. But in his bid to win he’s also running against the LGBT community. Cromartie, 47, is very public in his anti-gay stances and sentiment posting his vitriol on Facebook. He’s said homosexuality is a choice, he doesn’t honor the Pride flag, and won’t bow to the LGBT agenda. “I hear you south St. Pete! Finally we have a leader who’s not afraid to say, ‘Too (sic) hell with gay pride & their flag,” reads a post from June 23. Cromartie told the Tampa Bay Times: “It makes me more popular as a leader. Because people understand I’m going to lead based on American principles. Not because they choose to be a homosexual.” The primary is Aug. 27, and the top two candidates will move on to the Nov. 5 general election. The race is non-partisan. Four people are running for the seat including incumbent Lisa Wheeler-Bowman. “Equality Florida joins the bipartisan chorus of St. Petersburg-area leaders calling

for Chico Cromartie to drop out of the St. Petersburg City Council District 7 race. His blatantly homophobic remarks show he’s not fit to represent one of the most welcoming cities in the state,” said Joe Saunders, Senior Policy Director. “LGBTQ residents shouldn’t have to put up with this sort of discrimination from their leaders, period.” Even the local GOP has taken a stand against Cromartie. “I wholeheartedly condemn Mr. Cromartie’s rhetoric,” Todd Jennings, the chair of the Republican Party of Pinellas County, told Florida Politics. “It is not emblematic of my values or the values of the Republican Party. The Republican Party believes in being the party of opportunity, and providing all
Americans, regardless of race, gender or sexual orientation, with the opportunity to live the American dream and fulfill the pursuit of happiness, no matter what form that may take.” Cromartie, who is black, told TBT the LGTB community in St. Petersburg is benefiting at the expense of the black community and taxpayers. He also criticized the council, which has three openly gay members. “The idea that the homosexuals should be considered to receive taxpayer dollars, based on the fact that they choose to be a homosexual, to me is not fair to the other citizens who choose not to be homosexual,” he said. “And if I’m elected, I’m going to dismantle all those policies.”

But Bialystok’s pride marchers were outnumbered, four to one, by thousands of counter-protesters, according to local police. Nationalist football “ultra” fans, members of far-right groups and others packed the parade route and nearby parks. “Get out of this city,” yelled a group of men trying to break through the 700-strong line of riot police protecting the marchers. “This is MY city,” orange-haired parade steward Precel, 19, shouted back, warning marchers to watch out for rocks thrown by the counter-protesters. Dozens of LGBTQ marchers were physically assaulted before, during and after the parade, according to the Warsaw-based advocacy group Campaign Against Homophobia (KPH), the organizers of the parade, and witnesses CNN spoke to. Ant Ambroziak, a journalist from Warsaw,
told CNN he was spat at and assaulted as he live-streamed the protest for work. “I have a friend who was assaulted before the march. He was punched in the face because he [was wearing] lipstick” he said. Another marcher was spat on and hit in the back, “all in front of my mother’s eyes, who started to cry and tremble,” Paulina Brzoza, 28, told CNN. “They were hunting us down,” said Precel, who is gender non-conforming and prefers they/them pronouns, adding that they had been spat at and chased by a group of men. Michal Bilewicz, who researches the social psychology of groups at the University of Warsaw, said Poland’s socio-political environment had demonized diversity and otherness. “What happened Saturday is a consequence of political language and discourse which targets gay people,” he told CNN. or millennia, people of all faiths have worshipped their God with music: The Book of Psalms is not only a collection of poetry, but also Hebrew songs of praise. Pope Gregory was inspired to notate plaintive chants that would echo in immense Gothic cathedrals for centuries. Johann Sebastian Bach, George Frederick Handel, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and other classical masters contributed scores of glorious masses, cantatas and oratorios. Today, it’s not uncommon to hear folk, gospel, jazz and pop music in sanctuaries around the world. At Christ Lutheran Church on Oakland Park Blvd., our congregation celebrates the rich and diverse liturgy of the church each and every week. Our services include the classic hymns of the Protestant tradition with a sung liturgy and open communion. The experience is diverse and varied, incorporating the great hymns of Martin Luther, John and Charles Wesley and Ralph Vaughan Williams; contemporary and traditional mass settings; and special music by our volunteer choir and handbells. Enthusiastic congregational singing and choral anthems are accompanied on the church’s 13-rank Zimmer pipe organ, a beautifully constructed and voiced instrument that fills the bright sanctuary

with soaring melodies and rich harmonies, and a Yamaha baby grand piano. Christ Lutheran Church offers a traditional worship experience that is at once familiar to people who grew up in the church before the latest trends of praise bands and projector screens on the walls. And, as a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, Christ Lutheran Church is a reconciling congregation that welcomes our LGBTQ brothers and sisters and their families and friends. We recognize that many LGBTQ people of faith have had complicated, even painful experiences with “religion” and “the church,” but our congregation believes every person is a child of God deserving of His grace. If you appreciate music and liturgical worship, Christ Lutheran Church would love to become your new church home. Our members invite you to join us each Sunday morning at 10 a.m. and, if you especially enjoy making music, there are many opportunities, as well. The choir rehearses before services each Sunday morning at 9 a.m. and singers of all levels and abilities are encouraged. Our handbell ringers practice periodically and soloists and instrumentalists are featured at special services and holidays. Together, let’s make that joyful noise to the Lord.
Christ Lutheran Church is located at 1955 Oakland Park Blvd. in Oakland Park. Services are held at 10 a.m. on Sundays. For more information, go to ChristLutheranFL.org or Facebook.com.

I am also pro-independent scientific research. And I am aware of how often in our country today because of the influence of Big Pharma, independent research through such sources as the Centers for Disease Control, National Institutes of Health so forth, is diminished. I also am never happy with the suppression of independent consultation In the United States.” Regarding the AIDS vaccine, Williamson
said she “knows that it exists.” Just last week, the National Institutes for Health announced the start of trials in the United States and abroad for a potential HIV vaccine. Kessler defended Williamson as a supporter of medicine, saying “there’s been things said that she’s against medicine, which is completely utterly wrong.” “I remember Marianne giving men money and taking them to UCLA for the AZT study and giving them money for prescriptions,” Kessler said. “There’s no part of Marianne that was anti-medicine.” Despite Williamson’s record of working for LGBT people, many LGBT voters have been drawn to other candidates, including gay South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg (whose success to date Williamson called “wonderful.”) One gay Democratic advocate with familiarity of LGBT donors in Los Angeles, who spoke on condition of anonymity for greater candor, said eyes have been on other candidates who appear better poised to win in the general election. “I know that there are a number of folks here who look very kindly on all of the work that she did in the community in the past — but most are now focused on more serious candidates who stand a real chance at beating our current threat: Donald Trump,” the advocate said.

ack in May, SFGN’s special “Furever Friends” issue about pets touched many people. Many animal lovers don’t want their special bond with a fourlegged family member to end, even at death. It’s possible to spend eternity with your pet, if you choose. The Sunshine Cathedral has created a columbarium on campus that is open to the public, as well as church members. A columbarium is a building where you intern cremated remains. A columbarium is composed of small wall spaces, called niches. Each niche is about the size of an urn. “Pets are very important to us,” said Keith Muller, Vice Chair, Sunshine Cathedral Foundation. “Most public cemeteries will not allow animal remains to be placed alongside human remains. But a church can do that. And we thought our community would like
to have their pets cremated and placed inside the columbarium, separately or with them.” Sunshine Cathedral has a handful of members who have done that. There are 140 niches in the columbarium. More than half are sold, and a few pet lovers have already purchased spaces for their pet urns. “Pets are members of the family,” Muller said. “They are very dear, especially in our membership. I wish that when we had this option when our Maltese passed on.
For more information on the pet internment at the Sunshine Cathedral columbarium, please visit https://sunshinecathedral.org/?page_id=8389 or speak to a minister at the church for details on how to purchase.

he Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office (PBSO) is the latest of several Florida counties to start a LGBT liaison program. Sheriff Ric Brashaw launched the program in early July with three officers with the goal of strengthening the relationship between the LGBT community and PBSO. The liaison program is now up to five officers, said PBSO public information officer Therese Barbera. “The program is still a work in progress for us … We hope to be sitting down with Compass [the LGBT community center of the Palm Beaches] in Lake Worth in the next few weeks to ascertain what they would like to see in the liaison deputies,” Barbera said. Other counties and cities that have recently initiated similar programs since include Orange County, Miami Beach, Jacksonville, and Fort Lauderdale. PBSO has also reached out to other local LGBT organizations already, including Palm Beach County Human Rights Council (PBCHRC). President Rand Hoch said he and Bradshaw talked about the program’s goals and future. “We were thrilled when we found out [PBSO was gaining LGBT liaisons],” Hoch said. “For people in our community to

be able to pick up the phone and see someone inside the sheriff’s office that cares, that’s huge.” The five liaisons are Lt. Beth Krivda, detectives Roham Raschty and LaShawnna Edwards, and deputy sheriffs Michelle Bonan and Megan Valerzo. They all volunteer for the position while staying on top of their prior responsibilities. According to the PBSO website, some of the LGBT liaisons’ duties include: • Meet with and provide a forum for business owners, community groups, and individuals of the LGBT community, and present information on relevant law enforcement issues • Assist and advise, as needed, with the sheriff’s office leadership on cases involving the LGBT community or LGBT issues • Collaborate with community leaders, businesses, and residents to design and implement public safety projects and programs to increase and improve the safety of
the LGBT community Barbera added that the liaison team will also soon participate in its first LGBT fundraiser. The team is biking in The SMART Ride, a 165-mile bicycle ride from Miami to Key West on Nov. 15 and 16. The proceeds from the race will go toward Compass and other HIV/AIDS prevention organizations. Hoch said he was “very optimistic” about PBSO’s new program. He applauded Bradshaw for the move and added, “He wants his department to look like the community.” The remaining steps PBSO is taking will be to write a formal policy and procedure on interacting with the LGBT community — “both within our ranks and outside,” Barbera said. “If somebody’s pulled over, rightfully or by mistake, if a deputy doesn’t treat them with respect because they’re LGBT, that compounds the issue at hand,” Hoch said. “Now, they have someone to talk about it — they have someone who is empathetic and sympathetic.”

he City of Wilton Manors is embarking on an exciting path of reinvention and visioning for the future. The Island City, nestled in between the Cities of Oakland Park and Fort Lauderdale has always taken great pride in its individuality and protected its desire to remain a small urban village despite South Florida’s trend toward more intense development. Times are changing, and like other innovative municipalities around the world, Wilton Manors is figuring out how to ensure the future sustainability of its community, identity, and way of life while opening doors to dynamic development and investment. “We understand that as City Leaders we must take bold steps to cultivate the City we want to be and not just wait for the development community to determine our future”, says Mayor Justin Flippen. Over the last few years, the City has been evaluating its land use policies and is in the final phases of proposing significant updates to improve the urban form along the major commercial and transportation corridors throughout the City. By the end of 2019, the City will consider changes along Wilton Drive, Andrews Avenue, and NE 26th Street that will add additional density to support transit oriented development. Land-use changes come with higher design standards to ensure that the new urban form does not feel out of scale with existing neighborhood characteristics that have become the standard in Wilton Manors. These land use changes will be completed in conjunction with significant investments currently underway along Wilton Drive, which will work to provide a more walkable downtown and will allow for outdoor cafes, public gathering spaces, a redesign of Jaycee
Park, and improved landscaping and street furnishings. “The City of Wilton Manors will be making significant investments in the public realm over the next five years”, says City Manager Leigh Ann Henderson. The City’s staff is currently working on their long-term utilities and public services plan to support the City’s vision for increased development. “We are a small city, and therefore we plan our investments carefully and take a conservative approach to development. Our vision for the future must be supported by a solid public service infrastructure”, says City Manager Henderson. Another exciting effort currently underway are the City Hall Visioning Public Workshops, the first of which was held in May. The City is working with the Treasure Coast Regional Planning Council to establish a Master Plan for the potential redevelopment of the City Hall and its surrounding property. The Community will have an opportunity to share their thoughts about what kind of new uses they would like to see on this site, as the City considers engaging a developer to reimagine the most central and pivotal location along Wilton Drive. Current community suggestions include a Hotel, residential, upgraded recreational facilities, cultural gathering spaces, additional parking, and commercial space. Wilton Manors is a small city with big vision, which means that it is ripe for economic expansion, investment, long term success, and prosperity. Community engagement and business partnerships are key to this development and will result in success for residents, businesses and the City overall.
Interested in development or investment opportunities in the City of Wilton Manors, contact, Pamela Landi, Assistant City Manager, 954-390-2103.

N
o, I have not hired a publicist. No, I am not paying a thousand dollars for a market wire press release. But yes, I am announcing today, in the midst of this hot Florida summer, that I am going back on talk radio. I am going on the Health and Wealth Network, WWNNradio.com. Kind of funny, though. Not sure I am either. I am making that announcement right here, right now, in this column, on the pages of SFGN. That should be a good start, as we get ready in our tenth year, to publish our 500th issue. SFGN is distributed and disseminated to over 350 locations in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. We estimate that we have 25-30,000 readers weekly. Aside from the newspaper, our magazine, The Mirror, is now delivered bi-monthly. Each product delivers content and creativity, and a commitment to conscientious journalism. That’s why we are still here. But it’s a free paper, so I have to thank our sales team as well. The reason we have made it is because the businesses that generously advertise get bang for their buck. Our LGBT community is loyal to our sponsors. My radio show expands the SFGN product line. It adds to our very special LGBT universe a solid and spontaneous on air presence, saying with the spoken word what we know in our hearts- that our lives count, and our voices will be heard. The advantage of the 21st century is that you can also listen to a radio show podcast anytime you want. You can hear the rebroadcasts in the evenings, or you can live stream in your office WWNNradio.com. It starts on Labor Day. I am not going to tell you that the show is the elixir for all the world’s ills. I won’t cure malaria by being on the air two hours a day,
but I can sure expose a city commissioner who is trying to raise your taxes, or step on your rights. Talk radio is still the universal public square. You get into a car, and you turn on the radio. Now you can also listen on an iPhone or do something called live streaming on a computer. I hope that is not illegal. If it is, I will take the case for free. For some, talk is music to their ears. It can be harmony or cacophony. When you are sitting in traffic trying to make that light, and the guy in front of you is stopped dead, oblivious to the traffic, texting a friend about his dinner plans, you want to scream. Talk radio lets you. We all wait on the phone 30 minutes to tell Comcast our Internet is down. Then, just as you are ready to speak, they hang up on you. So might I. Welcome to life. Thirty years ago, when I started this gig, I was practicing law full time. Now I am winding down a bit, with my partner, Russell Cormican, picking up the slack. One thing remains the same, though. We are still advocates. Our community still needs a voice. We come together as a society not to restrict the rights of any, but to secure the rights of all. Diversity is the strength of America. White supremacy is not. That should be hiding in the past. Unfortunately, from the Oval Office to the chambers of the United States Senate, toxic messengers want to roll back our nation’s progress. We can’t let that happen. Look at Poland. But it’s just a show, a radio show. If we can direct you to the best restaurant to get a good burger, give you a good hearty, laugh, or simply tell a story you can share with others, we will be doing a public service as well. It’s afternoon drive, and we start next month. Listen in, live and local, uncensored and unafraid.
I won’t cure malaria by being on the air two hours a day, but I can sure expose a city commissioner who is trying to raise your taxes, or step on your rights.

ears ago, a producer approached Tonynominated director and playwright Michael Leeds about developing a musical based on the life of Hollywood heartthrob (and closeted gay man) Rock Hudson. While that project never took off, Leeds found himself fascinated not so much with the handsome Hudson, but with Henry Willson, the homely, gay and larger-than-life agent who groomed him—and many other young actors—into stars. A decade later, Leeds’ play about Willson, Hudson and his bevy of boys, “Starmaker,” is receiving its world premiere at Island City Stage. “Willson sort reminded me of Mama Rose from ‘Gypsy,’” said Leeds during a quick interview between rehearsals, “the ultimate stage mother. He was this combination of agent extraordinaire and Roy Cohn, the first Hollywood manager before they called them managers. Willson found these young men, gave them new names, told them what to wear, introduced them to Hollywood. He created paragons of masculinity, heterosexuality. It was this gay man’s joke on the world.” In between projects, Leeds returned to the play, rewriting and tweaking the dialogue along the way. It was given a staged reading at Lynn University’s Jan McArt New Play Reading Series and more changes were incorporated. Audiences will immediately notice the presence of a Greek chorus. “Henry was so bigger than life, I wanted that Greek chorus—people who would play different roles, but speak to us about Henry— correcting him when he was talking to us,
serving as his conscious.” That Greek chorus includes some of his most successful proteges: Tab Hunter (who also would later come out as gay), Troy Donahue, Rory Calhoun and Lana Turner. The only character who doesn’t speak to the audience, Leeds noted, was Hudson. In his role as director, Leeds faced an unusual challenge preparing actors who x were too young to remember these stars from Hollywood’s golden era. “They did their research, but there’s also some universality to the theme of following your dreams, which each of them did. It’s a story about the need to be true to yourself, both Henry and Rock. Hollywood called them ‘Beauty and the Beast’, but both were living out a lie and there was a cost,” the playwright explained. More than 50 years later, Hollywood leading men are still afraid to come out and risk their careers, Leeds pointed out. Back then, FBI director J. Edgar Hoover (himself a closeted gay man) was investigating homosexuals and even proposed quarantining gays and lesbians. Today, LGBT people are facing renewed bigotry and discrimination, shrouded in hateful tweets and calls to make the country great again. “It was a very, very threatening time and it’s easy to understand what it was like for Rock then and actors today,” Leeds added. “As hard as it is to believe, these themes still resonate today. What wouldn’t you do to be a star? If you could be Julia Roberts, if you could be Brad Pitt, what wouldn’t you do to have money and fame? When you start to think about that, the goal post moves.”
Island City Stage presents the world premiere of Michael Leeds’ “Starmaker,” Aug. 8 – Sept. 8 at Wilton Theater Factory, 2304 N. Dixie Hwy. in Wilton Manors. Tickets are $38 at IslandCityStage.org.
