IDS Healthcare Foundation filed a public records lawsuit against Governor Rick Scott this week. The suit alleges Scott’s staff refused to provide copies of his public calendar and travel schedule. “AHF made multiple requests to reach the Governor and discuss his decision to limit patients’ choice of healthcare coverage to a single for-profit company,” reads a prepared statement from AHF. “In response to Scott’s refusal to comply with this open records request, AHF has filed a lawsuit.” A spokesman for Scott refuted AHF’s claims telling Orlando Weekly: “For obvious reasons, releasing details of the governor’s schedule weeks in advance could present very serious security issues. e’s a swimmer from South Florida, but guys, he’s taken, so hands off. “I’m off the market,” said Alvaro Gutierrez, Jr. in a telephone call from Miami last week. Gutierrez said he is in a healthy, new relationship – with another swimmer. “The therapy process has been amazing,” Guitierrez said. “I continue to evolve and change.” Two years ago Guitierrez discovered swimming as a means of coping with divorce. Now the 38-year-old gay man joins more than 1,000 other participants in the swimming program at the 2018 Gay Games in Paris. France’s capital city hosts the tenth edition of the Gay Games, Aug. 4-12. Gutierrez is representing the Fort Lauderdale Hammerheads. “I do it as a hobby,” Gutierrez said when asked about his skill level. “More as an

activity because I don’t really like going to the gym.” Gutierrez said he loves to travel and will be visiting Paris for the second time. He is taking a plane from Miami to Atlanta and then on to Paris. Following the games, Gutierrez said he intends to visit Northern Ireland before returning to the U.S. Gutierrez competed in the World OutGames last year in Miami. Even though the international event was cancelled, swimming was one of the few sports that still took place. The Opening Ceremonies for Gay Games 10 is planned to begin at 4 p.m. local time, Aug. 4, at Jean Bouin Stadium. The stadium, which hosts rugby matches, is in the Boulogne-Billancourt neighborhood of Paris between the flowing waters of the Seine River.

The First LGBT Memorial in the UK Goes to Britain’s ‘First Modern Lesbian’

Activists Protest ‘Medically unnecessary’ - Surgeries on Young Intersex Patients

Via Facebook Via Wikimedia

Anne Lister, a 19th-century businesswoman, traveler, and lesbian has been honored with a rainbow plaque at the Holy Communion Church in York where she symbolically married her wife in 1834. Commonly referred to now as Britain’s “first modern lesbian” and in her time as “Gentleman Jack,” Lister kept a series of diaries that recorded her daily life. But when a coded section was cracked for the second time in the 1980s after being discovered and hidden by a family member in the 1800s, her many same-sex love affairs were revealed. Lister’s history is “enormously significant because she is one of the first

6

people for whom there is documentary evidence of what she saw as a queer marriage. She also saw no conflict between her Christian faith and her sexuality. And an important part of her legacy was her gender non-conformity,” Kit Heyam, one of the activists who campaigned for the plaque, said to the Guardian. Lister’s diaries were recognized as a “pivotal document” in British history by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2011. They were also added to the Memory of the World Register, which documents heritage of “world significance,” UNESCO’s website says.

About 70 people affiliated with the advocate group Intersex Justice Project (IJP) gathered outside of a Chicago children’s hospital on July 19, protesting against “corrective” — and “medically unnecessary” — surgeries on intersex patients that are too young to consent. The surgeries can also cause nerve damage, incontinence, and sterilization, said the Human Rights Watch. They have been condemned by the World Health Organization and Physicians for Human Rights, among others. Pidgeon Pagonis, a prominent intersex activist, attended the protest and talked about their three surgeries at the Ann & Robert

H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago as a child. Although the hospital is praised for its 2016 trans-inclusive policy, Pagonis’ treatment was harmful and explained as necessary to get rid of a cancer that they did not have, they said. “With trans patients, they really defer to the patient to decide what they would like to do with their body and work with them accordingly. And that’s all we’re asking. We’re asking for children who are born with variations of sexual anatomy, for them to have the opportunity to decide what they want to do with their own bodies,” intersex activist and protest participant Sean Saifa Wall said, according to INTO.

Transgender

‘Queer Eye’ Participant Sues His Employer to Improve Transgender Healthcare

Via Twitter

Skyler Jay, a transgender man who was one of Netflix reality show “Queer Eye’s” season two subjects, has filed a lawsuit against the University System of Georgia (USG) for denying to cover his transition surgeries. Jay said that USG’s healthcare guidelines are biased against transgender employees, and is asking for the trans-related exclusions that have caused a “mental, emotional, physical, and financial” toll on him to be removed. If enacted, these changes would impact the employees of USG’s 26 universities, said Advocate.

On top of the gender-affirming surgeries’ $16,200 cost, complications that required a second surgery and possibly a third have put Jay into debt. He received $8,200 from his “direct community” to help cover the costs, and currently has a GoFundMe page open. He plans to use the money to pay off his debts and donate to LGBT charity organizations. “I have no expectations, only hope. But I whole heartily feel that it’s time for change. I never want someone like me to suffer the way I have under these exclusions ever again,” Jay said on Twitter.

Police follow tip alleging ‘sex acts’ at adult store 13 men arrested inside Pleasure Emporium

Wayne K. Roustan

Via Facebook

Sun Sentinel

Complaints about sexual activity inside an adult boutique in Hollywood have resulted in the arrests of 13 men. Police said they received an anonymous tip that people were seen performing sex acts inside the Pleasure Emporium, at 1321 S. 30th Avenue. The business sells lingerie, lotions, sex toys, DVDs and has a theater in the rear of the store for the private viewing of X-rated videos, according to police. As officers from the street crimes unit waited in unmarked patrol cars outside, two undercover detectives went inside and paid $25 for a private viewing room at about 6 p.m. Wednesday, according to the police report. Once inside the viewing area, the undercover detectives saw two men

performing sex acts alone and on each other, the report stated. They were among the 13 arrested and charged with exposure of sexual organs and/or lascivious acts, police said. Bond was set at $100 in each case, court records showed. Sun Sentinel and SFGN are media partners.

The Senate may soon confirm these Trump judicial nominees who are a threat to LGBT rights. From left, Howard Nielson, Thomas Alvin Farr, David Porter, Matthew Kacsmaryk and Mark Norris. W

ith August fast approaching, U.S. senators would customarily leave Washington for their annual break, but Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is holding them in session for votes on President Trump’s judicial nominees — many of whom would likely threaten LGBT rights if confirmed. The Washington Blade has highlighted five nominees that could come up for a vote and that the LGBT legal group Lambda Legal and other progressive groups have identified as hostile to LGBT rights. Each of these nominees could receive a vote at the same time the Senate considers the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh, whom Trump has named for a seat on the U.S. Supreme Court and whom LGBT groups oppose because he came from a list of potential picks created by

10

the anti-LGBT Heritage Foundation. Trump named many of these picks as long as a year ago, but they have languished in the Senate as a result of opposition from civil rights groups over their records and views against LGBT rights. Here are the backgrounds on the five nominees and their anti-LGBT records: Mark Norris, nominated for a seat on the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Tennessee Nominated by Trump in July 2017, Norris has served for 17 years as a member of the Tennessee Senate, where he has supported anti-LGBT legislation and shepherded it through as Senate majority leader. Among the anti-LGBT bills Norris supported

and are now law are measures prohibiting Tennessee municipalities from enacting proLGBT ordinances and enabling mental health counselors to refuse to treat LGBT patients out of religious objections. Norris as majority leader also last year moved through legislation now pending before the House that would bar the government from taking “discriminatory action” against a business based on its internal policies. The measure would bar cities from refusing to contract with companies that have no policies against anti-LGBT discrimination. After the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 2015 in favor of same-sex marriage nationwide, Norris challenged the legitimacy of the decision. In September 2016, Norris was among 53 Republican legislators who filed a motion to

intervene in a custody dispute case between two lesbian parents. The lawmakers argued the lesbian parent who wasn’t the birth mother didn’t have rights to her child because the Obergefell decision didn’t apply to family law. In the final year of the Obama administration, Norris was a critic of guidance requiring schools to allow transgender students to use the bathroom consistent with their gender identity, pledging in a statement to “make sure that nothing will be done to give this ‘guidance’ any effect.” Trump has since repealed the guidance. But Norris’ record isn’t just marked by anti-LGBT views. The lawmaker has pushed forward other initiatives criticized by civil rights groups. Among those measures are anti-Muslim legislation, English-only driver’s

NEWS national education, measures restricting abortion rights, legislation enhancing criminal penalties on undocumented immigrants and a voter ID law seen to block minorities from accessing the polls. Howard Nielson, nominated for a seat on the U.S. District Court for the District of Utah Howard Nielson made defense of California’s Proposition 8 in court — and the argument that U.S. Chief Judge Vaughn Walker’s ruling against the measure should be invalidated because the judge didn’t disclose he’s gay — a distinctive part of his legal career. Nominated by Trump in September 2017, Nielson is a partner at the D.C.-based Cooper & Kirk, PLLC and represented the defendants in Hollingsworth v. Perry, who sought to uphold the measure banning same-sex marriage in California they placed on the ballot in 2008. The U.S. Supreme Court ultimately rejected their claims on the basis they didn’t have standing in court, restoring marriage equality to California. But before that ruling, Nielson filed a motion seeking to vacate Walker’s ruling against Proposition 8 on the basis that he was in a same-sex relationship and didn’t disclose that as he adjudicated the case. “Chief Judge Walker thus had a duty to disclose not only the facts concerning his relationship, but also his marriage intentions, for the parties (and the public) were entitled to know whether his waivable conflict was actually a non-waivable conflict mandating his disqualification,” Nielson wrote. Nielson’s attempt to invalidate Walker’s ruling was rejected by U.S. District Judge James Ware, who sided with pro-gay rights groups in maintaining Walker’s sexual orientation shouldn’t invalidate his decision. In his argument in favor of Proposition 8 on its merits, Nielson suggested being gay is a choice by pointing out there is debate about how sexual orientation is defined and disputed the effect of discrimination on gay people, including increased rates of depression and suicide. Nielson has also faced criticism for being part

of the screening committee at the U.S. Justice Department during the Bush administration, which was found to have taken political affiliation into account for hiring practices. He also worked at the Office of Legal Counsel, which justified the use of torture. Nielson has also been an attorney for the National Rifle Association. David Porter, nominated for a seat on the U.S. Third Circuit Court of Appeals Nominated by Trump in 2018, Porter could be one of the first nominees McConnell brings up for a vote because circuit court nominees will likely be a high priority. Porter — a partner at the Pittsburgh-based Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney — has an antiLGBT record that has raised concerns as a result of his association with groups and politicians who’ve expressed anti-LGBT views. Porter leads the Lawyers Chapter of the Pittsburgh Federalist Society, a conservative legal group that argues for strict interpretation of the U.S. Constitution. In 2009, Porter cofounded the Pennsylvania Judicial Network, a group that opposed the confirmation of now U.S. Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor, with former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum, who has expressed notoriously anti-LGBT views. Also of concern to LGBT groups is Porter’s opposition to the Affordable Care Act. In a 2012 article, Porter argued if the U.S. Supreme Court were to uphold Obamacare under the Commerce Clause, it would “break the Framers’ structural design.” The process by which the Senate has advanced Porter has also raised concern. The Third Seat was open during the Obama administration, but wasn’t filled because the Senate didn’t take action after Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) refused to turn in his “blue slip” for the nominee Obama selected. The Senate has traditionally used the “blue slip” process to give deference to home state senators in the judicial nomination process. Now, during the Trump administration, the other senator from Pennsylvania, Bob Casey (D), has refused to hand in his “blue slip” for Porter. Instead of his respecting Casey’s Matthew Kacsmaryk (First Liberty Institute publicity photo)

wishes to hold on the nominees as was done with Toomey, Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) has proceeded with the Porter nomination and gave him a hearing. The committee reported Porter out favorably to the Senate floor, where he awaits a confirmation vote.

ust a sophomore in the Air Force Academy, Bradley Kim just made history as the first active football player in the military to come out as gay. He took to Instagram to confess his sexuality. Since coming out, Kim has made his Instagram account, as well as his Twitter, private. “Jeremiah 29:11 God made me this way for a reason,” Kim wrote, according to NewNowNext. “I did not think this day would ever come, but I’ve finally reached the point where I am comfortable and confident enough with myself to say that I am gay. It’s been a long road to get to this point and I definitely would not be here without the love and support of my amazing family, teammates and coaches here at the academy, and my equally amazing friends. I feel blessed to have such receptive and understanding people in my life.” Kim is a player for the Air Force Falcons, which represents the Colorado U.S. service academy for college football. Before this, Kim was a star high school football player in Washington. “I hope that I can serve as an example to those

who are allowing their fear of acceptance to change who they are,” Kim continued. “I almost gave up my dream of playing division 1 football for fear of not being accepted by everyone, but today I am happy to say that I am a cadet at the Air Force Academy playing the sport I love with amazing people standing behind me and supporting me.” Before coming out on Instagram, Kim came out to the other defensive backs on his team. They replied with a standing ovation. He previously came out to his parents, former high school teammates, teammates at the Air Force Academy, and more. “If anyone feels like they don’t have a voice or feel like they are alone, just know there are plenty of people out there like you and me, and more that are willing to talk to you about it. God bless all and thank you to everyone who has made me feel comfortable to live my most genuine life.”

Hialeah to Host a Pride Festival in October Co-founders DJ Citizen Jane and Karen Larrea tell SFGN their plans for the upcoming event Damon Scott

A

lthough “LGBT Pride Month” was in June – chosen to coincide with the anniversary of the Stonewall Inn riots late that month in 1969 – some aren’t as aware of “LGBT History Month,” which takes place in October. Both the U.S. and Canada observe October to mark gay rights and civil rights – it corresponds with National Coming Out Day on October 11 as well. Many cities hold Pride events as part of festivities during the month. Madeline Fernandez and Karen Larrea are bringing a new Pride to South Florida. They are organizing now for a first of its kind on October 7 – Hialeah Pride – to be held at Historic Hialeah Park. The two lesbians and cofounders say Hialeah Pride is “the next step for equality in South Florida that began with the march in 1977 on the streets of Coconut Grove.” SFGN asked the duo, who met each other working at events, why they chose Hialeah and what attendees can expect. Tell us a little bit about your backgrounds. Larrea: I was raised in South Florida and live in Broward. I have a background in marketing and events, such as Aqua Girl in Miami. I often book the talent, negotiate contracts and have done that for years. I was the talent director for the [Club Skirts] Dinah Shore Weekend in Palm Springs, [California]. I’ve done different events around the country working with promoters. Fernandez: I was born in Miami Beach and raised in Hialeah and moved when I was 21. My parents are still there. I’ve never said my legal name in public, but I’m DJ Citizen Jane. I’m one of the most in-demand DJs in the LGBT community and around the world. I do most of the biggest Pride events – Sydney, New York City. My home base is Miami and I’ve been DJing since the 1990s. You have a direct connection with Hialeah then. Fernandez: It’s always been a passion of mine to do something for the LGBT community there, because Hialeah, being a conservative community, when I first came out, I didn’t feel like it was a safe place to come out as a lesbian. I know there’s a huge LGBT community in Hialeah and I want

to break a barrier there. It’s something I’ve been thinking about for many years. How will Hialeah Pride be different, besides its location? Fernandez: I believe it’s needed because Miami has its beaches, everyone has a thing. We will be very inclusive. There will be no segregation as far as – there’s a women’s tent, transgender [people] are over there – we will be an allin-one human family all together. Larrea: That’s what we feel is right for our Pride. There is nothing wrong with the others. Fernandez: Yeah, there’s nothing bad to say about other Prides. We just want to do this a little bit different and be great and special as one. We will have artists and talent, trans, gay men, lesbians, queer, all the letters on the main stage. You’ve said Hialeah Pride is the next step for equality in South Florida. What do you mean? Larrea: Equality is across the board. All the letters for us are equal and all the letters matter. In our community some of the letters can seem more important than others. We are including our straight allies as well. Fernandez: Nothing like this has been done in the past.

We believe this is breaking ground and it’s going to make history. The city is fully onboard and the mayor is super excited – he thinks it’s great. Hialeah Park thinks it’s amazing and is onboard and ecstatic. Larrea: Everyone that we have said this to, including other presidents of the Pride boards, have wondered why it hasn’t happened before. We are opening lines and educating people. Businesses are super excited and completely onboard. Anything else you’d like our readers to know? Larrea: As part of the event we will be sponsoring scholarships for LGBTQ youth within Hialeah schools. Youth and community is a huge mission of ours. And it’s all about making history. It’s two women who have founded this Pride. We love our boys and our committee has bi, trans, women, gay men – what are they lacking, what do they want? And our straight allies. It’s about being all-inclusive. Fernandez: From traveling I’ve done so many Prides where it’s very open and where it’s not as open. At smaller Prides they are so much more appreciative of the support. Florida really isn’t that open: there is still a lot of room to grow. At first, it sought money to provide HIV testing and treatment, but the request expanded as she realized that much more needed to change in Guyana. “We need policy changes. We need to sensitize institutions that we get services from,” she said. “So we can change our country.” This is the goal of the fund: to support civil society organizations worldwide in changing mindsets and proving that change can happen -- showing governments that it is possible. “It’s the best way to do it, the way we’re doing it, and then for the governments to get on board,” John told CNN on Tuesday. “We set out templates. ... Governments see they work and come on board with us. “I don’t think there’s been a country that we’ve worked in that it hasn’t worked,” he said. The fund has helped LGBT people avoid death threats in Uganda, stop abuse in refugee camps in Malawi, change attitudes among the police in multiple countries and help evicted church clergy find sanctuary. But there are many more people to help, and today, HIV experts fear that the numbers may only go up.

A global shift to the right “Our concern at the moment is that there is a shift towards the right,” said Shaun Mellors, director of knowledge and influence at the International HIV/AIDS Alliance, who coordinates the Elton John Foundation’s rapid response grants. “It’s all bubbling up, and it’s all increasing at the moment in a really scary way.” South African-born Mellors, 53, is openly gay and living with HIV. He fears that the rise in more conservative mentalities will further increase homophobic mindsets, giving them a louder voice, pushing LGBT people underground and away from HIV services -both treatment and prevention. According to UNAIDS, new HIV infections among gay men and other men who have sex with men are rising. The region where “HIV rates are highest among men who have sex with men is sub-Saharan Africa, the second highest is the Caribbean, and these are both regions with high social intolerance for same-sex behavior,” added Chris Beyrer, the Desmond Tutu Professor of Public Health and Human Rights at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. “It’s impossible to say there is direct causality, but there certainly is a very strong correlation,” he said. about losing custody of their children. There was no opportunity to obtain a representative national sample.” The researchers acknowledge the limitations, though, calling in their latest paper for their results to be replicated in a larger population with racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic diversity and across the LGBT spectrum. Evidence from dozens of other studies, however, including ones from the NLLFS team using data from nationally representative, population-based samples, has supported the broad NLLFS findings that children of lesbian parents do just as well as their peers. While the latest NLLFS paper says its results will be useful for medical professionals consulted on the mental health of young adults with sexual minority parents, the implications go further. Gartrell explained, “Our findings show there is no justification for restricting child custody, child placement, or access to reproductive technologies based on the parent’s sexual orientation.” That takes on renewed importance today, when 10 states now allow publicly funded adoption and foster care agencies to refuse services to LGBT parents and children

(among others) if providing them conflicts with the agency’s religious beliefs—and a bill in Congress would allow the same nationwide. “It would be wonderful to be in a place where we didn’t need to continue to address the assumptions that were made in the 1970s that unfortunately have reared up again very vividly in the last couple of years,” Gartrell observed. Beyond politics, the NLLFS results also teach us about the particular aspects of lesbian families and offer lessons for all. Even when the children were only 10, for example, Gartrell noted “how important it was to them for all people to be accepted for who they are and for differences to be appreciated. The kind of education that goes into creating that kind of perspective in a child is really quite phenomenal,” Gartrell said. She credits the parents’ own experiences of discrimination and “wanting to make their children’s lives better based on their understanding of it.” “So much conflict in this world is based on a fear of difference,” she added. “Appreciation of difference is a great need that we have in our country and our world. I see these kids as having been given that gift from their parents.”

Dreger said. “If they put a shovel in the ground it’s going to be a problem because it’s a violation of the covenant.” He said the proposed Carrfour building is also slated for construction atop one of the main drains for storm water runoff. He said there is already a drainage problem on the property, which is frequently immersed in pools of standing water after heavy rains. “The Pride Center should have certainly

We can sever our ties with them and we don’t have to have a relationship with them anymore,” Dreger added. WMG

No White After Labor Day WMG Some elected officials have no respect for the city’s rules

2520 N. Dixie Highway • Wilton Manors, FL 33305 Phone: 954-530-4970 Fax: 954-530-7943

By Sal Torre Most of us grew up with definite do’s and don’ts. Don’t wear white after Labor Day, no eating oysters in months that don’t contain an “R” in the spelling, no swimming for 30 minutes after eating, brown shoes should always have a brown belt and, of course, your socks should match your shoes. One unwritten rule here in local politics is that candidates not on the primary ballot in late August but on the November ballot, should wait until after Labor Day to start posting campaign signs. In the meantime, focus instead on packing up your white summer garments for next season and ordering your first dozen oysters since last April. Candidates on the November ballot do not need to add to election sign clutter of those on the primary ballot. It’s just too confusing for us lay folk to figure out who is on the ballot for which election. If you are on the November ballot, just wait a few weeks to clutter our roadways, our intersections, and anywhere else you can place a campaign sign until we get past the August primary election and the Labor Day holiday which heralds the end of summer and the beginning of the fall campaign season. Furthermore, this is not just about unwritten social norms that dictate proper behavior and decorum, it’s more importantly part of our city’s Code of Ordinances. One would think our elected officials should know and understand that code. So, how is it then that campaign signs for Wilton Manors elections are starting to crop up around town this past week, well before the legal date of August 9, before the August primary election, before Labor Day weekend, demonstrating a total lack of proper etiquette, not to mention compliance with our city code? So, while our elected officials question and vote on matters pertaining to residents and businesses following our Code of Ordinances, they somehow think those same codes and regulations do not apply to them. Perhaps we should just not make such a fuss and wait to hear some lame excuse like those given by other leaders in our community. When one such leader was caught not following city code, Florida statutes, regulations governing playgrounds and illegal business activity, the response the community received was, “Oh, I wasn’t aware of such a law. Once I was made aware of it, I took the appropriate action.” Really? Oh, I have been your elected official here in Wilton Manors, but wasn’t aware of our city’s code that regulates campaign signs. Not a very comforting campaign slogan. There was another saying I heard growing up: “Actions speak louder than words.” We should pay close attention to the actions taken by those running for office here in Wilton Manors. Look back over the years and judge them on their actions, not just their words spoken a few months before Election Day. Rumors around town suggest that the Russians are meddling in our elections, probably due to Island City residents needing to point a finger somewhere since most have a hard time believing that trusted elected officials might be deceptive, misleading, or capable of disregarding our laws. I haven’t noticed any suspicious Russian operatives cruising around Hunters this past Friday, or any new business in town such as Vladimir’s Campaign Sign Company, or gangs of

authoritarian Slavic bullies strong-arming property owners to post campaign signs on their properties. I usually drive down to the Russian food markets in Hollywood to get a glimpse of such types from the motherland while standing in line to buy caviar and smoked fish. However, perhaps the rumors are true. If you told me any of this before Donald Trump got elected, I would have thoroughly enjoyed commenting on such foolishness as a sign of insanity. Unfortunately, people can be deceptive. Some look to bend the rules, and some think they are above the laws that govern the rest of society. Residents of Wilton Manors must be vigilant. Be aware of the actions of those running for elected office and hold those who believe they are above the law accountable on Election Day. Primary elections are on August 28. We have choices to make for judgeships in Broward County, who will run for governor for some State Representative races, for Congress, and other elected offices come the November election. What we don’t have on the August 28 ballot are choices for who will serve on the City Commission here in Wilton Manors. Our municipal elections are not until November, so please wait until after the Primary and after Labor Day to position your campaign signs around our Island City. While you are doing this, please remember our city code, governing regulations and to lead by example on how best to make life just better here. WMG

More Second Quarter Insights By James Oaksun Last time, I ended the column with these words: “I’m not going to say it’s raining. But I see quite a few dark clouds around.” A rather sharp decline in year-over-year sales was the driver of that statement. This past week we had two articles in CNBC. com about this phenomenon – one general and the other referring to southern California as a bellwether. Both articles stated that overall sales were falling, and that inventories – particularly at lower price points – were declining, as well. So rather than look at prices this time, I decided I would look at recent inventory trends to see whether similar things were happening here. To see whether there was a valuation component to it, I looked at inventory in total Wilton Manors (all three neighborhoods) as well as in North Andrews Gardens, probably the most desirable entry/mid market neighborhood east of I-95 (and also popular as an Island City alternative). The results are shown in the chart here. I think you will find them enlightening. First, inventory

has been generally falling in both areas over the last several years (with a few blips here and there). At present, WilMa inventory (relative to anticipated sales) is at its lowest point since late 2013. Inventory in North Andrews Gardens is at its lowest point in six years. Also note that inventory in North Andrews Gardens has tracked somewhat below Wilton’s for several years now. This is something I noted in last year’s Yearbook. In general, inventory as of last September increased by one month for every $100,000 of valuation (starting from a base level). When I complete the 2018 Yearbook in October, I will see if that relationship still holds. I am particularly interested in inventory levels in the next-higher neighborhoods from Wilton (Victoria Park, Coral Ridge dry lots, possibly some waterfront areas in Pompano). For now, I concur with CNBC and can say that the combination of falling sales, lower inventory and flattening prices merits closer analysis. WMG

It allows us to continue a lot of the projects we started, including some of the recreational amenities,” Resnick said. The proposed budget includes a $17.6 general fund budget, which includes funds for police, fire and street services. Also included are average annual wage increases of between three and four percent for employees and additional funds to provide for hiring incentives for the Police Department, Resnick noted. City activist Paul Rolli, who chaired Wilton

I don’t think we can continue increase like that,” Rolli said. “I think we could have done more planning ahead.” He said the city needs more affordable housing for young workers, and worried that existing home prices and taxes are much too high for young people to afford. “We are really at a turning point,” he said. “I think we could be more fiscally responsible and be more reliant on technology and reduce the reliance on staffing,” Rolli said. Transgender Student Wins Florida Legal Victory

irst, some breaking news from Ponta Verde, Florida, wherever that may be. A federal judge, Timothy Corrigan, came down on the right side of history yesterday. He ruled in favor of a 17-year-old transgender plaintiff, Drew Adams, who had been denied access to the boys’ bathroom at Allen D. Nease High School in Ponte Vedra, Florida. The school board argued it was concerned for the privacy and safety of both trans and non-trans students, but the judge ultimately dismissed those arguments. National nonprofit Lambda Legal teamed with Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman’s Miami law office to take on the case pro bono, which is God’s way of saying “for free,” an English phrase many American lawyers do not understand. So thank you

Manors ‘Egging’ Makes National News Three gay men were egged outside of the Gym Bar in Wilton Manors last Monday, and the story has caught the attention not only of local media outlets but the national gay press, including the Washington Blade. You don’t expect that kind of crap here, and you certainly should not take it. Maybe we all need to carry eggs. After all, the only way to stop a jerk and bad guy with eggs is to be a good guy with eggs. Brian Carter and his two friends were standing outside of Gym Bar when a driver in a black BMW M3 drove by saying, “Do you want to be gay?” “I mostly just heard the yelling and was pelted right away,” Carter told Local 10. “It was a pretty heavy hit right here, but it splattered so much and it hit a couple other people.” “They were definitely shaming us for being something that we feel like we were born with. I feel no shame for who I am,” Carter continued. Apparently, egg yolks were also found on the sidewalk outside of Out of the Closet

to the law office, and Jennifer Altman, the attorney who handled it. “The evidence is that Drew Adams poses no threat to the privacy or safety of any of his fellow students,” Corrigan wrote in a 70-page opinion issued July 26. ”Rather, Drew Adams is just like every other student at Nease High School, a teenager coming of age in a complicated, uncertain and changing world. When it comes to his use of the bathroom, the law requires that he be treated like any other boy.” Nice to find in the Age of Trump a decision of merit. A senior attorney at the Pillsbury law firm, Omar Gonzalez-Pagan told the Daily Business Review, “the school’s policy of barring students from accessing whichever restroom suits their gender identity degrades, humiliates and serves as a scarlet letter. ”

thrift shop, which is affiliated with the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, and outside of the Wilton Manors police station. Carter posted a picture of himself covered in egg yolk on Facebook but says he wasn’t scared. Instead, he says he feels bad for the perpetrator. “It didn’t hurt. I didn’t go home and cry. I went home and went to bed,” Carter said. “I kind of laughed it off, but I feel bad for the person that threw it. Why would he feel like he needed to do that?” Gym Bar owner Rick Schmultzer told Local 10 he thought the person responsible is “cowardly. Gym Bar took a light-hearted approach to the incident by having a promotion on egg salad sandwiches. Yes, you can laugh off the idiots, but be alert. An eggshell in the eye can cause serious damage, and then it would not be so laughable. The real question is, who is contributing to a national attitude that it is OK to be homophobic? Might start by looking at the tenant living at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington, D.C.

Former Secretary of Navy Lambasts Trump on Transgender Policy In an unrelated transgender news piece, I want to thank Ray Maybus for ripping into President Trump about his directive last year banning transgender persons from serving in the military. CNN.com picked up his comments last week, and they are piercing and appropriate. “This notion that all of this work’s been done and these people felt safe as transgender, felt safe coming out, joining the military, and then suddenly the rug gets jerked out from under -- it’s not the way to treat patriots, it’s not the way to build a great military force either,” Mabus said on “The Axe Files,” a podcast from the University of Chicago Institute of Politics and CNN. Kicking people out of the military for being transgender, Maybus reasoned, made no sense: “How much weaker does that make us? How much worse a force does that make us. We were asking people to lie about who they were, what they were about. And it’s just, from every standpoint,

it’s wrong and it’s dumb militarily,” he said. I got to meet Secretary Maybus when I was invited out to San Francisco two summers ago for the christening of the USS Harvey Milk. He has spoken out for diversity in the military, and the courts have so far been backing LGBTQ initiatives, but there is a shaky road ahead, folks. Trump is making more and more appointments to the federal courts of individuals who are faith based and totally unsympathetic to issues that matter to us and our friends. The future rulings can lead to reversals and setbacks of our rights for decades. Keep that in mind and remember to vote locally in order to change the world globally. We have a primary here in Florida at the end of August, and a small group of dedicated voters can impact local elections. Turn out. Remember, there are good people like Judge Robert Lee facing a primary challenge for the first time in 20 years. Get out there and make your voice heard.

Convictions Publisher's Editorial Twitter Slurs Strike Out Baseball Players MLB Orders ‘Diversity Training’

It’s been a rough few weeks for Major League Baseball’s Diversity Program, but it should keep our friend Billy Bean active for the next few months. Minutes after throwing a near no hitter against the Los Angeles Dodgers last week, 25-year-old Atlanta Braves pitcher Sean Newcomb was greeted by Twitter with posts he had published when he was 18 years old, demeaning “fags.” His would-be celebratory moment was destroyed by words from his youthful past. Ironically, a week before, the same thing happened to Milwaukee Brewers all-star Josh Hader, who has been one of the premiere relievers in the majors this season. After his

selection to the national all-star game in DC, Twitter emerged with his homophobic posts from a decade ago, when he was a much younger man. Both players have since apologized for their youthful indiscretions, and the baseball lords will send them and their teammates to the diversity training programs they have set in place. So look at it this way. We know that jocks are macho and live in a world of their own where the meek are mashed by the mighty. But hey, baseball and society is saying no more, me too, and that bullying has to go away. We are moving to a day when this behavior won’t be tolerated. More than that, you won’t even see it anymore. We will have arrived when the day comes those taunts never exist. But then human nature being what it is…..

But hey, baseball and society is saying no more, me too, and that bullying has to go away.

A response to ‘Clarence Collins Still in Jail’

MANNY SIMONE, NEWS ANCHOR

Dear Editor: Thank you for writing an updated story on Clarence Collins as incomplete as it was. Many of us who know Clarence are concerned that he has been through at least three Public Defenders in four months. That’s unconscionable to us, but unfortunately the way the system is set up. As soon as we establish a relationship with one PD, which doesn’t always allow free flow of information due to client privilege, we must start all over in identifying the new PD and establishing a new relationship; hence, “spinning our wheels.” I must take issue with Mr. Kent’s assertion that, “the money should have already been used to get him out of jail.” While I, personally, have been working hard to obtain Clarence’s release, I was advised by his Public Defender to hold off on bailing him out. Doing so would force a timetable for his release. Without a proper legal residence, established in advance, Clarence would be forced to live someplace like the homeless encampment under and overpass. That is unacceptable to the people who care for Clarence. Although jail is not an ideal situation for anyone, it beats the alternative society has forced on people like Clarence (living in unsafe, indignant places like an overpass). There are just so many legal residences for the large number of Registered Sex Offenders. As soon as we find one with an opening we will proceed with bailing Clarence out.

Hustlers in South Florida Graham Brunk

T

here is evidence that “hustlers” have existed for centuries. Scrolls from the “Edo period” of ancient Japan describe the idea of a young male providing sexual services to older adult men for payment. Then the term used was “Kagema,” not to be confused with “cruising” or “gay-for-pay.” The term “hustler” as we know it probably comes from William H. Butts in his 1947 article in the Journal of Clinical Psychopathology aptly titled “Boy Prostitutes of the Metropolis.” He described it simply as male prostitution but typically the prostitute would be a young male targeting an older male, calling them “tricks.” Services were not always sex. They could be companionship, nude modeling or dancing, body massage, or some other acceptable fee-for-service arrangement. Historically Miami Beach, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach all had known areas where hustlers would loiter and look for work. In Miami Beach it was the 21st Street Beach. In Fort Lauderdale it was the beach area around A1A, Cortez St, Birch Road, and Las Olas near the Marlin Beach Hotel. And, in West Palm Beach it was along Dixie Hwy around the West Palm/Lake Worth boundary (known as the spillway) and around West Palm’s 25th Street near Broadway around where popular gay bar Man’s Land was and the then very gay centric Sea Grape Motel. The bar at the Colony Hotel in Palm Beach was also a good spot for a young guy looking for an older wealthy “trick.” In the early 1960s it was still a shock to the South Florida community that there may be so many gay men living amongst them. The Miami News ran a story at the time describing the issue....gay men would lure young teenage boy’s attention with money and then that boy would tell his friends where they could make quick cash. These boys were then “recruited” and in turn would now “recruit” more…at least that was the theory the media often came up with. There are not any concrete records detailing how much or how often this kind of cycle might have really happened. One today might think that of the stories reporters often uncovered where they reveal the act of “recruiting” back in the 1960s was actually in fact many young guys coming to terms with their own sexuality but shielding it through this activity. Still despite that, hustlers by definition did still exist. Young good looking guys (straight and gay) knew their desirability and certainly would capitalize on it when the opportunity arose. Alive Magazine interviewed a few of them in the late 1970s when hustling in South Florida was at its height. There was Jerry, the tall athletic bisexual. He would make his rounds to various Miami

Beach gay bars at night looking for “tricks” but had a traditional girlfriend by day. Then there was Hank, the short muscular type. He claimed to be strictly straight and took a more traditional approach to hustling by walking up and down Ocean Drive looking for the right guy with a big wallet. He claimed the money was good and all the sex action was on their part and that he did not actively participate since he was not attracted to men. A former marine, he claimed he was lazy and never did well in school and didn’t think he wanted to get stuck in a work grind so hustling was the only other thing he knew and it paid his bills. The last guy interviewed was Peter, the tall boy-next-door 19 year old. He too would cruise the gay bar scene. Not all his clients were older wealthy men as the media often portrayed. He claimed that nearly half of his clientele were men his age and they’d shell out lots of money if they were really attracted to him. Peter himself was a self described gay but what makes his case unique was that he wasn’t the stereotypical hustler you read about in the newspaper. He was a clean cut Florida Atlantic University student. He only hustled from time to time and during season he was a waiter at a Boca Raton restaurant. Because South Florida can be very seasonal he often struggled with waiting tables in the summer and felt he had no choice but to hustle and often made more money doing so. The biggest concern these three guys had was being attacked or robbed. A new concern began creeping into the hustler community in 1981. All three counties experienced their first HIV outbreaks that year but it wouldn’t be until 1985 that gay men were frequently becoming victim to the disease. With so many knowing so little about how the disease spread, the act of hustling slowing drifted into history. Many straight guys were unwilling to risk their own welfare for the sake of making quick cash and many

In the early 1960s it was still a shock to the South Florida community that there may be so many gay men living amongst them.

32

gay men themselves were becoming more cautious when it came to anonymous sex and less likely to hook up with a stranger. Now since HIV has become more controlled and treatable hustling has reemerged but the Internet has drastically changed how business is conducted. Most recently Craigslist, Rent Boy and Backpage were just a few of the ways modern hustlers look for a trick often under the disguise of escorting. Craigslist has since dropped its personals section and the government has shut down Backpage. Until the next big thing arises, hustlers will just have to rely on Grindr, where their efforts may not always be welcome or just find tricks the old fashion way: cruising the local gay bar.

lifestyle food Maui Ahi Poke

California Roll Poke

Do the Hokey Poke Rick Karlin

And Turn Yourself Around

P

oke is the current dish sweeping the nation. It originated in Hawaii where every family has a favorite poke recipe. Basically, poke is a dish to use leftover bits of fish. Small pieces of fish and vegetables are marinated and sometimes served over a bed of rice; sort of a cross between deconstructed sushi and the Polynesian equivalent of ceviche. If you prefer to serve your poke as an appetizer, rice crackers make a nice accompaniment. Poke dishes are healthy, easy to prepare and delicious. If you’re wary of eating raw fish, simply marinade your seafood for a longer period (refrigerated, of course) and it will be pickled and have the taste and consistency of cooked fish. A note about the recipes; all fish should be sushi grade - which means it has been handled and butchered in a way that makes it safe to eat raw. While most recipes call for ahi, any firm-fleshed fish, such as salmon, is appropriate. For those concerned about eating raw fish, use cooked, chilled shrimp or chunks of firm tofu. The directions for all the recipes are basically the same; unless otherwise noted, mix all ingredients in a non-reactive bowl (meaning glass, ceramic or plastic) and cover and chill for about one hour before serving, salt to taste. Recipes may be prepared up to six hours in advance, if you want to serve ceviche style (meaning pickled). Keep the dish chilled while serving and use within eight hours. Basic Tuna Poke 1 lb. raw sushi grade ahi tuna, cut into ½ inch cubes 3 tbs. reduced-sodium soy sauce 1 tbs. toasted sesame oil 1 tsp. Asian chili oil 2 tbs. ponzu sauce 1 garlic clove, minced 1 green onion, sliced diagonally 2 tbs. roughly chopped cilantro leaves 1 teaspoon toasted sesame seeds ½ avocado sliced, for garnish

Sriracha mayonnaise 1/2 cup mayonnaise 2-3 tbs. Sriracha hot sauce (to taste) 2 tbs. rice vinegar

1 lb. sushi-grade ahi tuna, cut in ¼ inch cubes 1 tbsp. soy sauce 1/2 tsp sesame oil (or to taste) 2 scallions, finely sliced (about 1/4 cup) 1/4 medium Maui or Vidalia onion, minced 1 jalapeno or Shishido pepper, seeded and minced Sriracha mayonnaise (see recipe above) Pinch of Hawaiian salt or other coarse salt 1 cup diced avocado microgreens, or watercress toasted sesame seeds scallions, finely sliced tobiko or masago DIRECTIONS • Combine first six ingredients in a bowl, chill for about 30 minutes. • Combine the Sriracha mayonnaise and 1 tbsp tobiko or masago, whisking briefly until combined. • When tuna is chilled, add the avocado and spicy mayonnaise mixture. • Toss until coated, place in four chilled martini glasses. • Top with microgreens, sesame seeds, scallions, and tobiko or masago. • Garnish with wonton or lotus root chips or slices of cucumber. • Chill until ready to serve.

The summer concert season is definitely in full swing. Tonight, catch Kesha and Macklemore starring in, appropriately, “The Adventures of Kesha and Macklemore” tour, beginning at 7 p.m. at the American Airlines Arena, 601 Biscayne Blvd. in Miami. The singers will offer their own unique mash-up of electropop and rap and, believe it or not, tickets are available as low as $8.90 each at Ticketmaster.com.

You might as well get a room in Miami this weekend because Janet Jackson—”Ms. Jackson” to you if you’re nasty—will take the stage tonight at 8 p.m. at the American Airlines Arena on the “State of the World” tour. In addition to her signature dance anthems and ballads, Jackson will perform songs from her eleventh album, “Unbreakable.” Tickets start at $24 (and they’re not too bad) at Ticketmaster.com.

The South Florida Theatre League’s Summer Theatre Fest continues tonight at the Colony Theatre, 1040 Lincoln Rd. in Miami Beach, with a performance of “Eyes That Don’t See” (“Corazon Que No Siente”) by Michael Leon. Each Monday, participating local theater companies present free staged readings of new works, offering a rare glimpse at the creative process. More information at SouthFloridaTheatre.org.

The a cappella singing sensation Pentatonix appear live tonight at 8 p.m. at the Coral Sky Amphitheatre at the South Florida Fairgrounds in West Palm Beach. The Grammy Award-winning, Texas-based quintet will perform selections from their latest album, “PTX Presents: Top Pop, Vol. 1,” along with many of their biggest hits. (We love the “Evolution” mixes.) Queerly Digital LGBT cinema on DVD/Blu-Ray, a monthly column

David-Elijah Nahmod

Hooked: New film shows plight of homeless LGBT youth elcome to Queerly Digital, a monthly column for cinema lovers from across the LGBT spectrum. All titles are available on DVD, Blu-Ray, or both. This column will as the months progress, be sure to include titles which honor all LGBT experiences.

W

N

ewly out on DVD, Max Emerson’s “Hooked” is a powerful drama about a homeless New York street hustler. The film’s world premiere, at Newfest, New York’s LGBT film festival, was a benefit for The Ali Forney Center, a homeless shelter and advocacy group for LGBT kids in New York City. Director Emerson promises that 50 percent of the film’s profits will be donated to notfor-profit affiliated organizations, including the Forney Center and GLAAD. Jack (Conor Donnally) is living in a New York City youth hostel with his boyfriend Tom (Sean Ormond). Jack, who has a penchant for getting into trouble due to his borderline personality disorder, hopes to build a better life for himself and Tom--he earns a living by turning tricks. In the film’s opening scene Jack is punched by a coked-up client. Tom, meanwhile, is being subjected to sexual harassment at the youth hostel. Jack soon meets Ken (Terrance Murphy), a well-to-do closet case who lives with his wife and baby son in Connecticut. Ken is struggling against his “urges” and seeks counsel from a priest. Even though they have no reason to trust each other, Jack agrees to accompany Ken on a trip to Miami. While there, he finds out about the wife that Ken had lied about. An enraged Jack, who thought that Ken might be someone he could trust, steals Ken’s gun and storms out--onto the streets of Miami where he ends up meeting some very seedy characters who put his life at risk. Desperate to get back to New York and to Tom, Jack accepts an offer to jack-off for a porn producer, who also hooks him up with a violent client. Things go from bad to worse. Emerson does a good job of illustrating the horrors that homeless LGBT youth face every day. Scenes where Jack is beaten are powerful and disturbing, as are the sequences in which Tom is sexually harassed. It’s not the life that either of them chose. In one heartbreaking

scene Jack leaves his estranged mom a voicemail--she had thrown him out of the house. As title cards at the end of the film note, LGBT youth are eight times more likely to end up homeless, twice as likely to be sexually abused, develop severe drug addiction, or commit suicide. Hooked underscores these issues. “I miss the days when you made everything OK,” Jack tearfully tells his mom. The cast does good work. Conor Donnally is particularly convincing as Jack, who tries to cover up his unhappiness underneath a veneer of sarcasm. Terrance Murphy is equally good as Ken, a handsome, middle aged man who genuinely comes to care for Jack and wants to help him. Ken is torn between his feelings for Jack and his love for his family--his marriage ends when his wife finds out what’s going on. Ken’s wife is no villain. She’s a nice woman who wants her husband to be exclusive to their wedding vows. When she realizes that he cannot do this, she leaves. But it’s Jack and Tom who form the heart of Hooked--they struggle to survive under conditions that are not of their own making. The two actors have wonderful chemistry together as they plan for the future they dream of, make love, and worry about each other. Tom is particularly concerned for Jack, who cannot seem to avoid trouble and often makes things worse with his own actions. Hooked is a film that needs to be seen. Many who judge street kids, who think that these kids “want” to be on the street, might reconsider such opinions after seeing the film, which, without preaching, urges us to care for our LGBT youth. Even today, with acceptance for the LGBT community at an all time high, there are still thousands and thousands of parents who refuse to accept their kids’ sexual and/or gender identity. What happens to Jack and Tom could happen to anyone.

The two actors have wonderful chemistry together as they plan for the future they dream of, make love, and worry about each other.

A&E theater Charles Baran stars as the title character in the world premiere production of “Aunt Jack” at Empire Stage. Photo Credit: Empire Stage.

‘Aunt Jack’ Offers Unfiltered Look at Modern Families J.W. Arnold

T

he overly complicated family depicted in S.P. Monahan’s world premiere play at Empire Stage, “Aunt Jack,” will never be confused for the Nelsons, Cleavers or even the quintessential “Modern Family,” the Pritchetts. The patriarch of the Sable-Church clan is George Sable (Harry Redlich), a fiery septuagenarian professor and gay activist, who is partnered for decades to Jack Church (Charles Baran), an overly dramatic drag queen whose career has seen better days. In an act of LGBT defiance two decades earlier, George and lesbian galpal Phyllis Judson (Merry Jo Cortada) produced an offspring, Norman (Bobby Eddy), now in his twenties and who runs away to San Francisco after a nasty breakup with his boyfriend Ian (Daniel Barrett). Shit hits the fan and George suffers a fatal heart attack after Norman returns unannounced months later to introduce his new love interest, Andy. Much to the surviving Jack, “Phyl” and Ian’s chagrin, Andy is—spoiler alert—a girl (Shannon Nicole Booth). The outraged trio proceeds to do everything in their power to break up the couple, who adhere to an “evolved” approach to sexual orientation. Monahan’s convoluted plot is clearly inspired by the 1978 French film and 1983 Broadway musical “La Cage aux Folles” with all the campiest sensibilities of the playwright’s mentor, playwright and drag performer Charles Busch, thrown in for good measure. Director Michael Bush keeps the action moving, milking every ridiculous moment, especially in the fast-paced first act as plot points roll out one after the other. There’s a lot of material there and, in the second act, the writing begins to trip over itself as Monahan rushes to tidily resolve the deep-seeded conflicts while the specter of George looms over all. Monahan’s writing is best as Norman and

Andy discuss their fluid pansexual emotional and carnal proclivities, insights the writer, a non-binary gender identifying Millennial, can only offer. Jack and Phyllis are products of a generation that grappled almost exclusively with lesbian, gay and bisexual identities and the tension is readily apparent as they begin to reconcile how their gay son can still have sex with men and women. Remember, for their generation, bisexuality was often perjured as the road stop to inevitable homosexuality. Queer pansexuality could simply be beyond comprehension to these gay fuddy duds. Under Bush’s direction, Redlich, Cortada, Eddy, Barrett and Booth all offer earnest, solid performances, although Cortada never fully convinces the audience that she’s either a gruff, card-carrying dyke or even a lipstick lesbian. (Stereotypes are central to the comedy in this play.) Like Monahan, Baran channels Busch’s style of drag performance, perhaps carrying the shtick just a little too far. All could dial the volume down a notch or two without losing any dramatic effect. “Aunt Jack” is a farce, but Empire Stage is an intimate theater with a max of 20 feet between actor and the very back corner. After nearly two hours of being screamed at incessantly, all I could think about was getting out the door, no matter the merits of the play and production. “Aunt Jack” is certainly still a work in progress—with plenty of promise. Monahan successfully challenges the traditional notions of sexual orientation and identity that even many liberal LGBT residents of Fort Lauderdale still cling to. As for audiences who were expecting something akin to a beloved ‘50s sitcom, there’s a website where they can find those “Make America Great Again” ballcaps.

The world premiere of S.P. Monahan’s “Aunt Jack” runs through Aug. 12 at Empire Stage, 1140 N. Flagler Dr. in Fort Lauderdale. Tickets are $35 at EmpireStage.com. 08.1.2018 •

A&E theater “The Gay Naked Play,” a comedy about a down-andout theater company, opens producer Ronnie Larsen’s 2018-19 season. Photo Credit: Ronnie Larsen Presents.

‘gay naked play’ exposes Summer/Fall Theater Lineup J.W. Arnold

D

avid Bell’s “The Gay Naked Play” will be the first production of a four-show season announced this week by local producer Ronnie Larsen. The comedy, opening on Wednesday, Aug. 8 at the Foundry in Wilton Manors after successful runs in New York City and London, is the saga of a struggling theater company in Pompano Beach. The company’s dramatic repertoire only attracts a handful of theatergoers on a good night and something must change if they are to survive. A wily commercial producer arrives on the scene with a novel solution to their artistic and financial woes—incorporate nude actors into their serious shows. “I only can only reveal that chaos ensues after that fateful decision,” said Larsen, writer of the Off Broadway hit “Making Porn.” “Think ‘Noises Off’ meets ‘Naked Boys Singing’. It’s just nuts.” Next, Larsen will produce his first original musical, “Now & Then,” the story of a couple that spans four decades. Larsen wrote the book and enlisted the skills of local composer Dennis Manning for the score. Larsen said casting this show, which runs Sept. 6 – 30, could prove to be his biggest challenge over a 25-year career: “We introduce the same couple—portrayed by three sets of actors—at different stages of their lives. Not only do they need to be convincing and appear to be the same characters, but one must also sing and play the guitar.” Manning, also a talented singer and guitarist, will portray one of the mature roles,

but Larsen put out a casting call in New York to find just the right cast. Larsen also warned that, for the first time, one of his plays will not portray explicit sexual situations or incorporate nudity. “I guess the audience is going to see a more sensitive side of me,” he said with a chuckle. The third show in the series will be Larsen’s new play, “3 Card Stud,” Nov. 8 – Dec. 2, which he describes as a tale of “three queens in search of an ace.” Openly gay Shelly and his openly gay son Michael share an apartment in Wilton Manors in the comedy. Life is very peaceful until they both fall for the same guy and things get complicated. The play was workshopped at a live reading earlier this summer and received enthusiastic responses from the audience. “This play is a joyful reminder that you’re never too old or too young to fall in love,” said Larsen, who also promised a return to the “buff” performances that have helped build his South Florida following. The Off Broadway hit “Afterglow,” will conclude the series, Feb. 14 – March 10 on the Abyss Theatre mainstage. S. Asher Gelman’s drama was extended several times in New York City and Larsen was among the first producers across the country to land the performance rights. “Afterglow is a complex play about monogamy and the risks involved with an open marriage,” explained Larsen. “It’s a very sexy play, of course, but it also manages to spark a sophisticated conversation about love, lust and commitment…and did I mention there’s a shower on stage?”

All performances are at the Abyss Stage or Foundry Studio, 2304 N. Dixie Hwy. in Wilton Manors. Individual tickets for “The Gay Naked Play” and “Now & Then” are currently on sale. Tickets for “3 Card Stud” go on sale Aug. 20 and “Afterglow” on Sept. 3. Tickets are $35 each and a subscription package for all four shows is also available for $120 each at RonnieLarsen.com. 08.1.2018 •
