“Everything just fell into place, it almost feels like divine intervention,” he said. Why Brightline (which is being re-branded as Virgin Trains USA)? Ward is a huge fan of all things transportation, especially Brightline, which he has been riding since service started in January 2018. One summer day, he was standing outside The Pride Center considering a wedding on a yacht when a Brightline train zipped past him and Ward saw it as a sign. “I was stopped in my tracks,” he said. About 40 of their closest friends and family from Brazil to Sarasota were in attendance. Pastor Leslie Rutland-Tipton of the LGBT Christian Church presided over the ceremony, partly to ensure Paul and Jules would start their lives together on the right track.

aul Ward and Jules Bandiera got married fast —at 79 mph aboard a Brightline train. And they became the first couple to wed on the high-speed passenger train. The nuptials took place about 2 p.m. Saturday, between Fort Lauderdaleand West Palm Beach. There was a quick photo session and celebration at the West Palm Beach station before they hopped the train back to Fort Lauderdale The setting was chosen because they have high speed and travel in common. Ward is a retired ship captain, pilot and transportation buff. Bandiera is a former flight attendant with Gol Airlines in Brazil. He took a 6-month furlough to learn English in Fort Lauderdale. Ward now works as a facilities and information technology manager at The Pride Center at Equality Park in Wilton Manors. For over two years they bumped into each other at various events around town. Ward was shy about approaching Bandiera, assuming that he was off the market. Bandiera was interested but assumed Ward was straight. Bandiera hadn’t dated anyone in 13 years, and Ward nine years. Ward told a mutual friend that he was interested in Bandiera but was too shy to ask him out. “I’m 6-foot-2, 244 pounds but I’m not bold,” said Ward. The friend was standing with Bandiera one day and decided to phone Ward and put him on the spot. The mutual friend handed the phone to Bandiera and the two finally connected. Their first date was Oct. 30 where they spent three hours getting to know each other. “There was this wonderful energy that was palpable when he held hands,” Ward said. Their growing relationship had to split time between South Florida and Brazil, until Bandiera moved to Fort Lauderdale. He took a buyout offer in March when Delta Airlines bought Gol Airlines. Ward proposed on June 30 during sunset at Fort Lauderdale beach.

August Report from HIV Planning Bodies Sean McShee
SUMMER SALE STAY 3 CONSECUTIVE NIGHTS, GET THE 4TH FREE! CERTAIN RESTRICTIONS APPLY MAY 28 – OCT 9, 2019
This article discusses two meetings. First, it reports on the meeting of the HIV Planning Council (HIVPC). Second, it reports on the meeting of the South Florida AIDS Network (SFAN). It then reports on the federal budgetary process. The Broward HIV Planning Council (HIVPC) oversees the Ryan White Care (RWC) Program of Broward (RWCBroward). The South Florida AIDS Network (SFAN) advises the RWC program of the Florida Department of Health in Broward (RWC-FL DOH Broward). The HIVPC met on July 25
the amount of the RWC award to decrease. Still Jones said this decrease is a good trend.
The Broward HIV Planning Council allocates RWC funds for each type of service. In this meeting, the HIVPC allocated funds and prioritized service types for Fiscal Year (FY) 2020. RWC-Broward will write a grant to the federal RWC program requesting these amounts. Fighting Stigma Through Fashion Andrew Ruffner reported on the “Fighting Stigma thru Fashion” show. Its goal was to attract people between the ages of 18 and 39, not currently linked to HIV services. Previous events had attracted mostly people over 51. Eighty-seven people attended. Of the 72 attendees who disclosed their age, 71% were between the ages of 18 and 39. Most attendees were not affiliated with an HIV agency. Leonard Jones, RWC-Broward, announced that a pilot program for online dual recertification for RWC-Broward and RWC-Fl DOH Broward will begin soon. Broward is the only county in Florida attempting online dual recertification. If successful, this program would be a model for all Florida. The pilot program will involve the random selection of about 50 clients per week. It will last for about three months. Participation is voluntary. Only clients needing recertification will be eligible to participate. Jones reported that Broward’s new HIV cases had declined. A reduction in HIV cases means a smaller target population. Ironically, this reduction in new HIV cases may cause
SFAN met on August 2 Serena Cook of RWC-FL DOH Broward reported on that program. Cook said that she was still working on obtaining sexual orientation and gender identity demographics. Clayton Weiss, HIV Patient Care Manager, phoned in his report from Tallahassee. He reported that the CVS specialty pharmacy should be open by August 19. Specialty pharmacies target people with complex pharmaceutical or adherence needs. Weiss also reported that $4.7 million is available for HOPWA (Housing Opportunities for People with AIDS) for six Florida cities. Those cities are Jacksonville, Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Orlando, Tampa, and West Palm Beach. These funds must be used for short term housing needs. West Palm Beach’s short term housing HOPWA program does not meet that requirement. As a result, the other five other cities will receive the $4.7 million.

Washington legislative update In early August, the National Alliance of State and Territorial AIDS Directors (NASTAD) reported that the Senate passed a bill setting budget caps. That bill also ended mandated sequestration cuts. With budget caps set, the Senate can begin work on the 2020 appropriations bill. The House has already passed an appropriations bill.
ANNOUNCEMENTS Next HIVPC meeting: Thursday, September 26, 2019 at 9:30 a.m. at Broward Government Center, Room GC-430, 115 S. Andrews Ave.

Log Cabin executive director resigns over
Trump endorsement Chris Johnson
Washington Blade
T
he executive director of the Log Cabin Republicans has resigned following a controversial decision by the organization’s board to endorse President Trump.
Jerri Ann Henry, who was the first woman to lead the LGBT Republican group, formally submitted her resignation Friday and left Monday after discussions with board members characterized as “harsh,” sources familiar with Log Cabin told the Blade. The resignation follows intense criticism of Log Cabin, which announced its support for Trump earlier this month without its members having met with him or having received any explicit commitments in exchange. Sources said Henry’s discontent with Trump and dissatisfaction with Log Cabin’s approach to defending its Trump endorsement in the media were key among her reasons for stepping down. Charles Moran, a Log Cabin spokesperson, confirmed Henry “did tender her resignation,” saying that occurred Monday. “The final date of her employment is undetermined at this time,” Moran added. “The board’s executive committee will proceed with an orderly transition to ensure nothing falls through the cracks.” Moran declined to comment on the circumstances of her departure, saying he “wasn’t on the phone call she had with our board chairman” and “can’t speak to the tenor or tone of the conversation.” “We thank her for her service to our organization and wish her well in the next chapter of her career,” Moran added. Henry’s name was not signed to the op-ed in the Washington Post endorsing Trump, which was signed by Log Cabin board chair Robert Kabel and vice chair Jill Homan. The op-ed was largely based on the Trump administration’s stated global initiative to decriminalize homosexuality and an HIV/ AIDS plan — both of which have yet to yield any results. Sources say disagreements about the direction of Log Cabin — with some wanting to pursue pro-LGBT policy goals, while others wanted to support Trump — led to a decision to prohibit Henry from speaking publicly for the group. Henry, the latest to leave Log Cabin after the Trump endorsement, joins former board member Jennifer Horn, who has been public about her resignation, saying she couldn’t look her children in the eye and belong to an organization that supported Trump. Casey Pick, who once worked as programs director for Log Cabin, has repudiated the organization in a Facebook post. Additionally, Robert Turner II, who once led Log Cabin’s D.C. chapter, announced he’d leave Log Cabin in a Facebook message. Walsh Takes on Trump Former Congressman calls president “nuts,” “erratic” and “incompetent”
John McDonald
T
here were drop outs and a new entry this week in the presidential campaign. Joe Walsh, a one-time tea party congressman, announced intentions to seek the Republican party’s nomination. Walsh served Illinois’ eighth congressional district during President Obama’s administration. The 57-year-old talk radio host called President Trump a child that is unfit for office. Walsh also used words such as “nuts,” “erratic” and “incompetent” to describe Trump. On the other side, Washington Governor Jay Inslee and Massachusetts Representative Seth Moulton dropped out of the race for the Democratic nomination. Neither man had qualified for next month’s DNC debate in Houston. Ten Democrats have qualified for the Houston debates. They are: Former Vice President Joe Biden, U.S. Senators Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, Kamala Harris, Amy Klobuchar and Cory Booker, former Texas representative Beto O’Rourke, South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg, venture capitalist Andrew Yang and former Housing & Urban Development secretary Julian Castro. “I think this is a moral moment in America,” Booker, 50, told supporters in Portland, Oregon Sunday night. “This is a moment of moral clarity. This election is not about a referendum on one guy in one office, this election is a referendum on us. On who we are and who we must be to each other.” Meanwhile at the White House, Trump said he was “very honored” to receive the endorsement of the Log Cabin Republicans. In existence since 1977, Log Cabin Republicans are a conservative LGBT political organization. “I’ve done really well with that community,” Trump said last week before leaving for the G7 Summit in France. “Some of my biggest supporters are of that community and I talk to them a lot about it. I think I’ve done very well with that community.” Trump’s comments were in response to a question by Washington Blade reporter Chris Johnson, who asked if the president was “OK” with his administration taking steps to make it easier to discriminate against LGBT people in the workplace. Trump pivoted to his Log Cabin endorsement and brought up the name of Peter Thiel, the

gay billionaire entrepreneur and co-founder of PayPal, as proof the community is “with me all the way and they like the job I’m doing.” Booker, 50, is a pro-LGBT candidate and New Jersey’s junior senator. He said forget about Trump. “Donald Trump wants this election to be all about him,” Booker said. “We make this mistake as Democrats if we make this election about what we are against instead of what we are for.” During Sunday evening’s visit to the Riveter, an event venue constructed by women, Booker said Trump is a distraction. He said instead of focusing on outrageous tweets or hype such as buying Greenland, Democrats should be worried about cuts to programs like Planned Parenthood and food stamps. “Beating Donald Trump is the floor, it is not the ceiling,” Booker told supporters. “It gets us out of the valley but does not get us to the mountain top,” Booker said. Booker said he is looking forward to the debates, but minor differences on health care policy will not turn an election in Democrats’ favor. “This election is going to turn on the gut, and the heart and the spirit and the soul of this nation,” Booker said. ABC News is moderating the debates, Sept. 12-13.

Back in 1977, my high school English Lit teacher handed me a new copy of the “Song of Solo-mon” to read and report on. My young mind was quickly taken on an eye-opening journey from my young white male existence to the world of such rich and troubling complexity of a young black female. I remember naively asking my teacher to explain why a black woman needed to oil her skin with olive oil. I remember her smiling as she described the meaning of the scene in the book. I am sure the smile was also from the joy of successfully educating a young student with the power of words and reading. Reading about other people’s fears, hopes, troubles, wishes and dreams made me understand that those around me who I saw as different were really just as screwed up as I was. Thank you, Miss Lynch, for being a great high school teacher and thank you, Toni Morrison, for such wonderful words that still challenge us to become better human beings. Teaching young minds and reminding old ones as well, to imagine, to learn, and to dream be-yond their immediate world to a place of amazing possibilities will always make life just better here. WMG

The first ‘Vibe’ took place Wednesday, Aug. 14, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. ‘Vibe’ events will have the same feel as the monthly art walks on the Drive. “This is musical entertainment for individuals that are strolling on the drive that are eating on the drive or the just of visiting art galleries.” said Shawn Palacious of the Wilton Manors Entertainment Group. “We wanted to make this opportunity available and that is what five on the drive is about. The artists for the inaugural were J.D. Danner and Sista Marybeth. “These are really brilliant musicians,” Palacious said. “They have special artists

By the WMG Staff The Wilton Manors Gazette launched a Facebook group a year ago to keep readers up to date with the latest happenings and news in the city and to distinguish itself from its parent company, South Florida Gay News. “What started out as a supplement to SFGN has really taken on a life of its own. Because of that we felt the Gazette needed a voice of its own, separate and apart from SFGN,” SFGN Publisher Norm Kent said. “We realize there is a community here in Wilton Manors that does not necessarily want all of SFGN’s news from around South Florida and the world, so the Gazette will focus on just hyper local news.” By targeting just the Wilton Manors community SFGN’s staff will be able to highlight even more relevant news, stories and events geared towards locals. More importantly the Facebook group gives those who live in and care about Wilton Manors a voice in their community. WMG

If Not WilMa, Then Where?
Real Estate
By James Oaksun With the median sale price of single family homes in Our Fair Island City now crossing the $500,000 barrier, this column will compare pricing in competing nearby neighborhoods. In addition, since many people have been totally priced out of the Wilton market due to the escalation in pricing, I thought it might be helpful to compare more affordable options to being within Wilton’s boundaries. My statistical analysis from a few columns back showed we could break WilMa into two parts, due to their different pricing characteristics. The first part would be West Wilton (meaning west of Andrews) plus the area in Center Wilton north of 26th Street. The other area (obviously) would be East Wilton (east of the train tracks) plus the area of Center Wilton that’s south of 26th. I demonstrated that, holding everything else constant, pricing in the latter section was roughly $100,000 higher. Of course, amenities such as house and lot square footage, presence of a pool and whether the home was on waterfront,

would also contribute to additional value variation. Take a look at the table included here to see the disparity in these two segments. Because we are dealing with smaller lists of eligible properties, I report the numbers on a six-month basis ending at the end of June, in this and the preceding two calendar years. We see a median sale price in the West/ Center North sector at $407,000, with pricing in the East/ Center South sector at an eye-popping $566,500. And that’s median – meaning half the sales were above that price, and half below. Now move down in the table to see median price history in the most directly-competitive areas (price-wise) to WilMa. The East/South Center sector leads the pack, and has over the comparable periods in the last two years, as well. West/ Center North sandwiches the WilMa competitors at the other end. You should note the brisk price increases in the Oakland Park Corals neighborhood (meaning the area bounded by the train tracks, Commercial, Federal, and Oakland Park Boulevard. Perhaps the commercial development along and nearby “Main Street Oakland Park” is assisting valuations – and might indicate a lesson for other areas in the County. Now, understanding that many buyers cannot afford the $400,000 plus price tag in Wilton and competing neighborhoods, I’ve included the more value-based options that we Realtors typically suggest when buyers have sticker shock in Wilton.

Note the wide variation in price changes over the one-year and two-year comparative timeframes. That’s why when people ask me (as they often do) what’s going with pricing, I always ask them to be more specific. Real estate here in East Broward is hyper-local, and different neighborhoods have different sale and pricing characteristics. Can we determine how much of the pricing variance in these neighborhoods is due to things like home and lot size, pool etc., and how much due to location? Stay tuned. I’m glad you asked. There are so many exciting things going on in your Island City! The budget process is in the home stretch, and the city commission will be approving the 2019-2020 Wilton Manors budget and millage rate on Monday, Sept. 23. Keeping promises and delivering on both a campaign commitment when I ran for mayor and a forward-thinking focus for our future, my goal for our city’s budget includes two things. First, the city commission has unanimously voted that the millage tax rate will NOT be raised. Second, the budget needs to direct available resources toward the careful redevelopment of our aging commercial inventory. An important and strategic way to maintain the city’s level of services while keeping tax rates low is to expand the ad valorem base. We will continue to ramp up our economic development efforts. The road map for this path is the Wilton Manors Economic Development Strategic Plan (available online here) and begins with the revitalization of Wilton Drive. With the roadway work almost complete, phase two of that project should be underway shortly and will include installation of an irrigation system and finally, trees! Next up will be the finalization of the Train Station Area Master Plan. Once that Concept Plan has been approved by the city commission, we will turn our attention to considering changes in density ONLY in specific transit oriented and commercial corridors while maintaining my commitment to protect our single family home neighborhoods. This process will be completed through the Urban Form and Density Study,
currently underway and expected to be complete in late October or early November. On a parallel path, we are moving toward consideration of the optimal and best use of the City Hall property. I strongly believe that the city commission needs a well-crafted plan for this signature space, and the Treasure Coat Planning Council is working to help us cultivate just that. In this way, should we decide we want to seek a recreation of the space, we will do so by providing developers with our own vision, created through outreach and consensus. The same philosophy will be applied in the coming year to the Andrews Avenue/Oakland Park Boulevard transit oriented corridor. While this area is a little behind the other two projects in terms of process, I am committed to progress in the coming year. Every one of these projects offer multiple opportunities for public input, and we need yours. Please attend the workshops and hearings, and let us know your thoughts then or thereafter. Doing so will definitely make for a better end result and will also help the city commission reach consensus on key decisions. Well planned growth, focused economic expansion, and continued operational excellence of your city are the keys to success in the coming year (and beyond) and are priorities I am proud to champion on your behalf.

himsa Teabout is a guardian ad litem, a court-appointed person to look after neglected or abused minors, to a young girl confused about her identity. Teabout was also confused. She didn’t know what to make of her young girl wondering whether or not she wanted to use male pronouns. To educate herself and be a supportive guardian, Teabout attended the Compass LGBT center of the Palm Beaches’ fifth annual Women’s Wellness Conference. There, she attended a session on transgender mental health and said she left knowing more than she did when she went in. “[I learned] she’s not alone, and the confusion is normal,” Teabout said about the session. “What she’s feeling is normal.” Dozens of other men and women like Teabout showed up two weeks ago to the conference to learn about health issues affecting lesbian, bisexual and transgender (LBT) women. Palm Beach County Victim Services, social workers, mental health counselors, nurses and doctors all touched on aspects of women’s health that go overlooked. Compass Health Services Coordinator Lysette Perez organized the event alongside a board of community leaders. Perez expressed her frustration with traditional health conferences targeted toward providers — not consumers — during her opening remarks.
“This is the only conference I’ve been to that teaches consumers how to be well and reduce their own risks.” - Lysette Perez
Compass Health Services Coordinator
“When they have health [events], it’s usually focused on stress relief techniques, like pedicures and drinking wine,” she said. “This is the only conference I’ve been to that teaches consumers how to be well and reduce their own risks.” Among one of the most crowded sessions was “Heart Disease in Women,” led by registered nurse Jennifer LaChapelle. She informed the audience that symptoms of heart disease are much more subtle in women than in men. Unlike dramatizations in movies and television, women don’t experience paralyzing chest pain — they instead get less severe symptoms like nausea, shortness of breath and back pain. “Women take care of everyone else, but we don’t take care of ourselves … this information needs to be out there,” LaChapelle said. According to the academic healthcare nonprofit Cedars-Sinai, most cardiovascular disease research is largely conducted with male subjects, so women are assumed to have the same symptoms. Heart disease the leading cause of death for both men and women, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Reproductive, relationship and mental health were also talked about at length. Teabout’s session, Transgender Mental Health with social worker Lynn Allen, had to be kicked out of their space to make room for the next session because the audience was locked in discussion. “It’s not an easy world to live in, and it’s
toughest on transgenders,” said Allen, who specializes in working with transgender youth, adults and their families. Chiropractor Victoria Cunnea shared her and her wife’s fertility journey in her “Fertility: Puberty to Parenthood” session. The couple has successfully had two kids — one who’s 2 months old and another who’s 4 years old. But while Cunnea researched different methods for her and her wife to have a baby, she realized there was no one-stop place to do research — which incentivized her to teach the session at the conference. “It took a lot of digging and looking at blog after blog,” she said about the research process. “I wanted to put all of it together with each component there.” Palm Beach County Victim Services also took an in-depth look at the prevalence of intimate LBT partner violence. Lesbian and bisexual women face higher rates of sexual harassment than gay and bisexual men. The former faces almost twice the amount of rape, physical violence or stalking, according to the Human Rights Campaign. Compass offered free HIV testing and CVS provided free flu shots throughout the day. Perez called the event a success, and said she sees the event getting bigger on an annual basis. This was “the most engaged group of attendees” the event has ever had, she said. “I’m a big believer in [the idea] nothing for us, without us, is about us.” Perez said. “There are things we need to keep on learning.”

t’s not about numbers. Really, it’s not. But sometimes numbers are the thing that jumps out and grabs your attention, especially when the numbers reflect wonderful Sunday church attendance in the middle of summer! What a joyful sight to look out from the pulpit when preaching recently only to see a church filled with people…and in the summer no less…only to recognize some time later the reality that: it’s not about the numbers! Why not? In virtually all other areas wherein “success” is measured, it can be measured by numbers. How many subscriptions does a newspaper have? How many attendees does the local sports team record? How many diners does a new restaurant serve? And so on and so on. Numbers in the
church, however, tell us something different. Numbers in the church tell us not how successful the church has been, but how successful God has been. For it is God who calls, gathers and enlightens us. It is God who draws us to gather and knits us together as community. And this then is the church—a community that has been brought together and gathered into one— the only number that matters! Christ Lutheran Church is just such a community. While we come from different backgrounds, experiences, and orientations, we gather as one community—brought together by the cross of Christ Jesus and gathered around our Lord’s Word and Sacraments. This is the “success” that binds us together—the call of Christ to gather.

Third Time’s The Charm? Spencer’s Corner Bar opens up
Rick Karlin
Spencer’s Corner Bar
Spencer’s Corner Bar. Photos via Facebook.
2390 Wilton Dr., Wilton Manors 954-368-2558 spencerscornerbar.com
After a couple other dining establishments’ failed attempts at this location (Sea & Olive and Thirteen), it seems that Spencer’s has come up with the winning combination. At least it seemed so the night I stopped in for a mid-week meal. A large group commanded the indoor dining space, taking up the majority of the tables, still we were lucky enough to snag the last table and were seated immediately. Later arrivals chose to dine at the bar or on the beautiful outside patio (which, I’m certain, will become more popular once temps drop). Even with a large group of 12-15 occupying their time, we were still greeted promptly and warmly by Chris, the manager/bartender, and our charming waiter with a cute Ukrainian accent. Spencer’s menu leans mostly towards sandwiches and apps, although there are a few entrees listed on the menu. While the rest of the food is fairly priced the entrees are all priced a good five bucks more than they should be ($18 for meatloaf and $25 for a pork chop, really?). Sandwiches are a better bet as they are not only reasonably priced but offer generous servings. The Reuben tops the list. Lean corned beef is the star of this dish with the Swiss cheese achieving just the right amount of gooeyness and just enough Russian dressing to augment, yet not overpower, the sandwich. The chicken salad sandwich is at least three inches high and features tender chucks of breast meat just held together by the herbed mayo mixture. Strategically placed slices of cucumber
add crunch and keep the bread from becoming soggy. All sandwiches come with a choice of excellent onion rings, crunchy fries, potato or macaroni salad or coleslaw. Other sandwich choices include a turkey club, roast beef or burgers. At lunch the sandwich section expands a bit to include; a shrimp po’boy, chicken breast and cheesesteak. Notably missing from the menu is anything for vegetarians. Hey guys, it’s not too hard to offer a veggie burger, Gordon Foods has a great black bean burger all ready for the grill. We started our experience off with corn fritters, which proved to be the only disappointment of the meal. Not only were they dense, but two of mine only had one kernel of corn in them. They were beautifully presented with a red pepper coulis and wilted arugula. We split a large Caesar salad and, while I wouldn’t say it was the best Caesar I’ve had (it was overdressed and could have used some fresh Parmesan), it did feature a tasty dressing and toasty croutons. Other app and starter options include; chicken wings with your choice of a half-dozen or so sauces, hummus, potato cakes, chili, soup of the day, wedge or garden salads and a mezze platter featuring charred shrimp, eggplant melitzanosalata, herbed flatbread and assorted dips and spreads. There are also a couple of dinner salads. You can add grilled chicken (for $9!) to any salad, as well as salmon (plus $12) or shrimp (plus $13). We were too full to even think about dessert, so we ordered the Creamsicle

street spaces, surrounding the place, but it’s also easier to get in and out of Spencer’s parking spaces that align Wilton Drive. Also, keep in mind that there are two parking lots, each a block away, one to the north (behind Galanga) and the other a bit south and east. With the improved parking situation, charming staff and tasty food Spencer’s may prove the old adage, third time’s the charm.

Review: World Premiere of ‘Pray Away the Gay’ at Broward Center J.W. Arnold
D
rag review producers Murray Hodgson and Peter Hendrickson have ventured into the world of theater with the premiere production of “Pray the Gay Away,” playing through Sept. 8 at the Broward Center. The comedy is based on experiences of Zachary and Michael Zakar, ArabAmerican identical twins and Instagram personalities who grew up in the Midwest and chronicled the process of coming out in an autobiographical book of the same title. Their mother was a staunch Catholic who responded to their sexual epiphany by attempting to “Pray Away the Gay.” What “Pray Away the Gay” is not: If you’re looking for deep insights into how the Zakar twins came to grips with their homosexuality (as twins or not) or dealt with their mother’s homophobia, you’re not going to find either in this show. The latter was signaled by the casting of a male actor as “Mom.” If there are any young gay people out there struggling with their sexual orientation or coping with conservative religious dogma, they probably won’t find answers in the Amaturo Theater. But, for the mostly older men in the audience who came out decades ago, the sophomoric jokes about blowjobs, boners, butt sex and bottoms are humorous reminders of those wild-eyes encounters many young gay men seek after coming out. What “Pray Away the Gay” is: Thanks to writer Bobby Brower and director Eric Swanson, the show is a fast-paced, laugh-aminute, campy romp that has audiences in stitches from opening to closing curtains. The show sometime seems out of place in a performing arts center (and more appropriate for Empire Stage or Wilton Theater Factory), but, simply put, it works if you’re looking for a little raunchy escape from current events. The Zakars and Cory Shorter, Jeffrey James Fox and Zachary James Morgan (in multiple roles) make the most of the material with well-timed delivery, but it is Vince Kelley as “Mom” who shines brightest in nearly every scene. Kelley (who is NOT a drag queen, but a female impersonator) clearly is in a class by himself, offering an over-thetop performance that is funny, smart and sophisticated at the same time. While the show may feel like an extended

“Saturday Night Live” skit—and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that— “Pray Away the Gay” benefits from strong production values. Justin Hawley’s clever set design never seems cheap (in that “SNL” way) and is surprisingly utilitarian, quickly transforming from the twins’ bedroom to a church confessional, their high school bathroom and even a “gayme” show set (like we’ve never seen that one before). Effective lighting design by Daniel Morency, video animations by Fernando Castillo and high energy sound design from Herb Harris Jr. and Project 1 Music Group support the production. The verdict: Overall, “Pray Away the Gay” is a very funny, well-produced diversion easily worth the price of admission, but it could be so much more. It would be worth the effort for the creative team and the Zakar twins to search a little deeper for the teachable moment their compelling story deserves.
Peter and Murray Present the Zakar twins in “Pray the Gay Away” through Sunday, Sept. 8 at the Broward Center in Fort Lauderdale. Tickets start at $37.40 at BrowardCenter.org.

t’s window-shopping for pleasure at another level. Reports suggest travelers to Amsterdam can admire, and possibly, purchase the talents of young gay men. When contacted, the one blogger, via mail responded he was merely posting information sent to him. The culture of Amsterdam can be hard to understand from afar. It is difficult to imagine this bold form of prostitution exists. Further examination via the internet turns up more clues. Placing barely clothed men in windows is, allegedly, the idea of HUNQZ, an escort dating platform and My Red Light, an Amsterdam brothel. In a joint statement, the organizations envision a “future that sees sex workers being treated equally to other independent entrepreneurs.” My Red Light, a non-profit, operates out of four buildings with 14 windows for sex workers to advertise. men and women, and is transgender inclusive. “Because of the stigma attached to sex work, access to business services is often limited to sex workers and sex businesses. However, because sex work is a legal profession in the Netherlands, sex workers should have the same rights and thus same level of access to business services, as other entrepreneurs. That is what we are working hard to achieve,” reads a statement on My Red Light’s website. Meanwhile, Pride Amsterdam recently concluded. This year’s theme was “Remembering the Past. Create the Future.”
